Irishman John Barry fought the Revolution’s last naval battle off Cape Canaveral Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
The last naval battle of the War of Independence was off the coast of Cape Canaveral on March 10, 1783. There’s even a memorial to it at Port Canaveral’s Jetty Park. The British on the HMS Sibyl didn’t stand a chance. They were up against a fightin’ Irishman — Capt. John Barry on the Alliance. Yes, that’s the same as Commodore John Barry who’s one of three men dubbed “The Father of the American Navy.” And yes, the surrender at Yorktown was in October of 1781, and that effectively ended the ground war with some exceptions. But, the Second Treaty of Paris that’d officially end the war with Britain recognizing American independence wouldn’t be finalized until September of 1783.
Long military tradition The native-born and diaspora Irish have a long tradition of serving in the U.S. military. Usually what comes to mind are the courageous exploits of the Civil War era Irish Brigade — six Irish regiments, including the 116th Pennsylvania, 28th and 29th Massachusetts, and 63rd, 69th and 88th New York infantries. The best remembered of them is the New York 69th Infantry that Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee reportedly dubbed “The Fighting 69th.” But the native- and American-born Irish tradition of service in uniform goes back to the Revolutionary War that became the War of Independence on July 2, 1776, when the Continental Congress adopted the Lee Resolution, the Resolution for Independence. The Ancient Order of Hibernians holds that it’s identified 174 Irish on the Continental side at the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Further, the international Irish Catholic organization that started in the United States says nearly 700 Irish were at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The AOH Florida website — www. aohflorida.org — reads: “On April 2, 1784, Luke Gardiner, afterward Lord Mountjoy, told the English Parliament, ‘America was lost by Irish emigrants … I am assured from the best authority, the major part of the American Army was composed of Irish and that the Irish language was as commonly spoken in the American ranks as English, I am also informed it was their valor

The Ancient Order of Hibernians holds that it’s identified 174 Irish on the Continental side at the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Native- and American-born Irish have served with distinction in the military ever since. Tom Sperduto took this Coast Guard photo. Photo courtesy of the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service that determined the contest …’” At the time many Irish spoke only Gaelic. Many refused to speak English, which they saw as the language of their colonizing oppressors going back to King Henry VII. There were some differences between who the Irish in the Revolutionary War and the Irish in the Civil War were. That gets into the Orange and Green, Protestants and Catholics. A larger percentage of the 18th century Irish in America were Protestants than their 19th century counterparts. Barry, however, was Green. He was a Catholic who’d suffered under cruel British policies and practices in Ireland that sent generations of Irish to America, especially during the Great Hunger in the middle 1800s.
John Barry Barry was born on March 25, 1745, in Tacumshane, County Wexford, Ireland. That village is near the southeastern coast of the Emerald Isle. Details about his early life has reliability gaps, but there’s every reason to believe a British landowner unjustly evicted his family from their farm. The family moved to Rosslare, County Wexford. Barry started working with extended family on fishing skiffs. By the time Barry was 17, he crops up in Philadelphia working on trade vessels, perhaps even as a first mate at that young age. He almost certainly didn’t look his age. Reports hold that Barry was 6 foot 4 inches tall. That’s unusually tall for those times. In 1762 Philadelphia, that’d made him a
veritable giant. By the time Barry was in Pennsylvania, the world was changing. The Seven Years’ War and its North American theater, the French and Indian War, was winding down. That left Britain straddled with a lot of debt to pay, so the British Parliament and King George III sought to raise tax revenue and reduce military expenses without cutting troop strength. Among those efforts were the Sugar Act and Currency Act in 1764, followed by the Quartering Act of 1765. Then came the Stamp Act of 1765. That act was intended to raise the revenue to pay for stationing British troops in the colonies ostensibly to ward off a French threat. The evidence is the colonists never widely accepted the “French threat” London claimed existed. But, the American colonies had no representatives in Parliament to make that case. The complexities of the issues were handily reduced to a familiar phrase that could fit on a modern bumper sticker or Twitter tweet. “No taxation without representation.” Barry, the giant Irishman already given reasons aplenty to hate the British, was living and working in the city where Benjamin Franklin’s fiery Pennsylvania Gazette published.
Capt. John Barry From 1765 forward the Trueborn Sons of Liberty and others escalated the revolutionary fervor in the American colonies with ideological discourse and
publishing, and physical action. That led to British backlash. The Boston Massacre of 1770 segued to the Boston Tea Party of 1773. The British answered the Tea Party with the Intolerable Acts. The American colonists replied with the committees of correspondence, the Suffolk Resolves, and finally the First Continental Congress of 1774. It was all a leadup to the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775 that claimed 174 identified Irishmen present on the American side. That, in turn, led to the Second Continental Congress, which was meeting in Barry’s adopted hometown of Philadelphia, passing the Declaration on the Causes and Necessity of Taking up Arms, along with creating the Continental Army and later the Continental Navy. The Naval History and Heritage Command’s biography of Barry at www.history.navy.mil reads: “At the breaking out of the hostilities between England and the American colonies he offered his services to the Continental Congress. His ship, Black Prince, was purchased by the colonial government and was renamed Alfred. Later, on 3 December 1775, with John Paul Jones as a lieutenant, Alfred first hoisted the American (Grand Union) flag in Philadelphia. “Captain Barry was given command of Lexington on 7 December 1775. Lexington sailed 31 March 1776. On 7 April 1776, off the Virginia Capes, she fell in with Edward, tender to the British man-of-war Liverpool,

Let's honor Rear Adm. Alene B. Duerk Column by Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
patrick@veteranvoiceweekly.com
I’d love for Florida to have the Alene B. Duerk State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Orlando. That’s, almost certainly, not going to happen. State Veterans nursing homes are named after deceased Medal of Honor recipients the Congressional Medal of Honor Society credits to the Sunshine State. Although, I’ve discovered, there’s an exception to the usual rules: the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans’ Nursing Home. It’s a well-deserved exception. I think most would agree there’s a strong case for considering another exception for Rear Adm. Alene Duerk. She was the first woman to serve as an admiral in the Navy. She was also a Seminole County resident and local medical leader until her death in 2018. Duerk is interred at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery — section 10, site 777 — in Brevard County.
Rear Adm. Alene Duerk Duerk was born, of all places, in Defiance, Ohio, in 1920. Yeah, Defiance. It just fits her. She graduated from nursing school in 1941 and was commissioned as an ensign in the Naval Reserves’ Nurse Corps at the start of ‘43. By 1945 she was serving aboard the USS Benevolence, which was with the Third Fleet in the Pacific, heading toward Japan.
She separated from the service after World War II, but was recalled in 1951. She stayed in the service for 24 years after that. In 1972, Duerk made rear admiral. That topped off a trail of accomplishments. Duerk was the File photo courtesy of the first Nurse Department of Defense Corps officer assigned Rear Adm. Alene Duerk became as Special the first woman with that rank in Assistant to the Assistant the Navy. She lived in Seminole County until her death in 2018. Secretary of Duerk is interred at Cape Canaveral Defense for National Cemetery. Health and Environment, among other credits. She was reportedly a major influence for Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo “Bud” Zumwalt to issue one of his famed Z-grams to open more of the Navy to women. Duerk retired in 1975 after a career of, by all
reports, fighting for her Navy nurses as hard as she fought for her country. Whether Duerk liked it not, too, she became an inspiration and spokeswoman for all women in or considering joining the military. After she retired from the Navy, Duerk seemed to seek a place to hide away from her fame. Like a lot of folks at the time, Duerk made her way to Central Florida to reinvent herself. Unsurprisingly, she became the director of the Visiting Nurses Association, which was later named the Visiting Nurses Foundation, and continued making a splash. An institution she’d had plenty of contact with was the University of Central Florida College of Nursing. With help from the community, the school started the Admiral Alene Duerk Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2006. In 2013 the university unveiled a bronze statue of Duerk at its nursing school. The Navy nurse never married or had children, but she had daughters and sons all around the world. Reports say that she received a constant stream of letters from women, medical professionals, servicemembers and others she’d inspired.

VETERAN VOICE • FEBRUARY 24, 2022 • 5 Ormond Strong started in 2015 when the local National Guard unit, the 1st Battalion 265th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, was deployed for a year in Afghanistan. Ormond Strong founder Debbie Kruck Forrester and others daily walked over the bridge showing support of the unit and their families. The participants continued the tradition of walking on Grenada Bridge carrying patriotic flags, and became a not for profit to “Support our local Soldiers in honor of our Veterans.” Ormond Strong and the Vietnam Veterans of America Daytona Beach chapter, 1048, will host the fifth annual J.J. J.M. Martin Military & First Responder Family Appreciation Day Feb. 24 Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Ormond Strong’s fifth annual J.J. Martin Military & First Responder Family Appreciation Day is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 26, at The Casements, 25 Riverside Drive, Ormond Beach. That’s a new location. “This event has been held at the Volusia Mall for the last four years,” said Bob Adkins, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Daytona Beach Chapter 1048, which is co-hosting the event.
Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall Adkins is the master of ceremonies this year. The event will be from noon to 4 p.m. at the Casements’ Rockefeller Gardens. The event is open to the public to show support for attending servicemembers, Veterans, first responders, and their spouses and children. The Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall will be there courtesy of the Patriot Guard Riders. “The Patriot Guard will be
escorting the wall down (Grenada Boulevard) through Ormond Beach,” Adkins said. “They will leave the (Rivergate Village) shopping center at (South Nova Road) and Grenada at 8 a.m.” Grenada is State Road 40. Nova is State Road 5A. The wall’s route will be 2.3 miles going over the Grenada Bridge, which has sidewalks for well-wishers to watch the wall pass. “There will be an Ormond Beach Police escort also,” said Adkins.
Ormond Strong Ormond Strong is a not for profit started in 2015 to “Support our local Soldiers in honor of our Veterans.” Their most visible function is walking over the Grenada Bridge carrying patriotic flags. That project began when the local National Guard unit, the 1st Battalion 265th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, was deployed for a year in Afghanistan. Ormond Strong founder Debbie Kruck Forrester and others daily walked over the bridge showing support of the unit and their families.
Hero Mobile “We’re going to have other things
such as the National Veteran Resources,” said Adkins. “The Hero Mobile will be there.” Michele Ladd started the National Veterans Resources to help Veterans with post-traumatic stress, addiction and risk for suicide. In 2017 Ladd’s husband, Randy Schue, and she started taking a 42-foot RV to Veterans events as a part of Operation 22 to ZERO. They call the RV the Hero Mobile. Of course, 22 is a common symbol for death by suicide among Veterans. It’s based on a previous, and widely reported, Department of Veterans Affairs daily count of Veterans who died by suicide. The rate of known deaths by suicide among Veterans has fallen, but 22 remains an important symbol. “We will have the Mt. Dora Pipes and Drums at this event,” Adkins said. “They will open this event with the (VVA 1048) color guard.” There’ll be food trucks, face painting, vendors and much more.
J.J. Martin J.J. Martin is a former president of the VVA 1048. He died in 2016. In Vietnam Martin served on the Standardization and
Evaluation team of the Special Air Warfare Center, and was a logistic support technician for the historic Son Tay Raid to rescue American POWs. After separating from the Air Force, Martin had a varied career, but notably served as the recreation director for the Stewart-Marchman Center for 15 years. That’s a famous drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Volusia County.
The Casements The Casements is a home built in 1913 that industrialist John D. Rockefeller purchased in 1918 for a winter home. Rockefeller stayed at the home until his death in 1937. He reportedly was active in the community and liked to be called “Neighbor John.” The home fell into disrepair after that, but was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The City of Ormond Beach bought the property in 1974 and started restoration with the help of grants. Ormond Strong is at www. facebook.com/ormondstrong. VVA 1048 is at www.vva1048. com. There are 30 VVA chapters in Florida. Daytona is the second largest by members.

Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz is shown in the conning tower of USS Nautilus during a short cruise inJune 1957, San Francisco Bay. U.S. Navy Photo/ Wikimedia Commons
THE SAILORS’ SAILOR On this day in 1885, Chester Nimitz, icon of World War II, was born Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
He came from seafaring stock, going back as far as the Revolutionary War, but he first wanted to be a Soldier, rather than a Sailor. But at only 15, Chester Nimitz entered the Naval Academy at Annapolis, destined to become one of the most famous Sailors of all time.
Colorful roots Chester William Nimitz was born in a hotel in Fredericksburg, Texas, built by his grandfather, Charles Nimitz, a retired sea captain. The captain had equipped his hotel with a ship’s bridge and a pilot house from which he could scan the hills and prairies. Young Chester’s father died five months before he was born. In his young years, while staying on occasions with his
grandfather, the future admiral heard many tall tales about the sea. But he dreamed of being a Soldier, not a Sailor, and while in high school tried for an appointment to West Point. When none was available, he took a competitive examination for Annapolis, and was accepted when he was only 15 years old. He left high school to enter the Naval Academy and was not awarded his high school diploma until many years later, when he had retired from active Navy duty. (He probably was the only person ever to graduate from high school in the uniform of a fleet admiral.) At the Naval Academy, Nimitz excelled in mathematics and physical exercise. After the two years’ sea duty required by law, he became an ensign. Even then his career might have taken a different course, but for his determination to make good. He said later that he was not overly enthusiastic at his first experience with the sea. “I got frightfully seasick, and must confess to some chilling of enthusiasm for the sea,” he said. (Wikipedia.org, sourced)
In 1912, then-Lieutenant Nimitz was awarded the Navy’s Silver Life Saving Medal for saving a shipmate from drowning. He wore this medal throughout the remainder of his career, along with the five Distinguished Service Medal awards for wartime exploits.
Huge responsibility Nimitz worked his way through the ranks, serving with distinction during World War I. He pioneered the practice of replenishing ships’ stores and fuel at sea, enabling the Navy to operate at great distances from base. Between the wars, he commanded several ships, and in August 1926, went to the University of California, Berkeley, where he established one of the first Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps units and successfully pushed for the program’s expansion. Nimitz lost part of one finger in an accident during a diesel engine demonstration, saving the rest of it only when the machine jammed against his Annapolis ring. By the time World War II came, he was a rear admiral,
to be promoted to admiral and ordered to take command of the Pacific Fleet, just under a month after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nimitz was in charge of assembling the Pacific force of 2 million men and 1,000 ships that drove the Japanese back to their homeland. When he took over the Pacific Fleet on Dec. 31, 1941, many of its ships lay at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, sunk by the Japanese. Very deliberately — by most accounts Nimitz always proceeded with care — he directed the deployment of such carriers and cruises as were left, to hold the line until that moment maybe two years away, when new battleships could be ready. While waiting for United States yards to turn out the ships he needed, Nimitz built up his combat teams. These were commanded by Admirals William F. Halsey, Mare A. Mitschner, Richmond K. Turner, Raymond A. Spruance, and Thomas C. Kincaid. He flew to Australia to call on General of the Army Douglas MacArthur,

BARRY from page 3
and, after a desperate fight of one hour and twenty minutes, Edward was captured and brought into Philadelphia as a prize. Barry continued in command of Lexington until 18 October 1776, during which time he captured several private armed vessels.” A daily Bible reader, Barry turned out to be adept at war, too. The Navy’s history command reports Barry became the captain of the Effinghan, the Raleigh, the privateer Delaware, and finally the Alliance. Under Barry’s command, the Alliance captured the Alert, the Mars, and the Minerva. That was in one trip taking a special commissioner to France. Barry and the Alliance went on to capture the H.B.M.S. Atlanta and Trepassy. The Navy’s historians give up trying to keep count in his biography after that and just say, “He continued in command of Alliance and captured numerous prizes in 1782.” The British knew they had a problem in Barry, so they came up with a way to solve it. The British reportedly offered him money and a frigate command if he’d turncoat. He reportedly declined saying he wouldn’t desert the upstart United States — the name Congress adopted on Sept. 9, 1776 — for all the British treasury and command of its entire fleet. The Navy’s history and heritage command confirms Barry’s battle with the Sibyl — the command uses the spelling Sybylle — is the “last naval engagement of the Revolutionary War.”
The battle On March 10, 1783, the Alliance and Duc De Lauzun were sailing north from Cuba with Spanish silver dollars to pay Con-
tinental servicemembers. A fleet of three British ships spotted them. They were the Alarm, the Tobago, and, of course, the Sibyl, which gets a variety of spellings in accounts. The commander of the Sibyl, James Vashon, reportedly had intelligence that the Duc De Lauzun was disarmed to be able to carry the silver dollars. Barry and the Alliance were guarding it. The Alliance crew spotted the Sibyl making a run at the Duc De Lauzun and intercepted. The memorial plaque at Port Canaveral explains what happened next. “Then in a daring strategy Captain John Barry aboard the Alliance reversed his course, and while under fire, waited until the HMS Sybil was close. When the British ship was alongside he returned fire to the broadside with greater number of cannons. The battle lasted less than an hour, when the HMS Sybil, outgunned and badly damaged, broke off from the battle and fled.” While the naval encounter wasn’t pivotal to winning the War of Independence, it did ensure that those who helped fight it got paid. Who knows how that moment going differently could have adversely affected the success of the upstart United States, which was at a moment of explosive uncertainty and flux.
Commodore John Barry The Congress of the Confederation, the successor to the Continental Congress, disbanded the Continental Navy in 1785 and sold the handful of surviving ships, including the Alliance. Barry went back to sailing merchant vessels. Protection of coasts de facto went to the U.S. Revenue-Marine. But, international piracy was increasingly problematic for American ships. That led to the 3rd U.S. Congress passing the Naval Act of 1794, which President George Washington signed into law. That’s the start of the modern Navy. The
history and heritage command reports — “Upon reorganization of the Navy on 5 June 1794, Captain Barry was appointed number one on the list of captains. His commission was signed by General Washington, dated 22 February 1797. He was ordered to superintend the building of the frigate United States, and to command her when finished. He was actively engaged in the Naval War with France, 1798−1801, and captured a number of French vessels in the West Indies. By the direction of the Navy Department, he brought United States to Washington, where she was laid up. This ended Barry›s active service.” In addition to being the first commissioned Navy officer, Barry served as the first flag officer and bore the title “commodore.” After bringing the USS United States to port, Barry led the Navy until his death in September of 1803. The devout Irish Catholic is interred at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia.

St. Lucie Clerk & Comptroller presents check for more than $199K to taxpayers Michelle Cavalcanti
ST. LUCIE CLERK/COMPTROLLER’S OFFICE
Clerk & Comptroller Michelle R. Miller presented a check for $199,960.50 to St. Lucie County taxpayers at the recent Board of County Commissioners meeting. The funds, generated through a partnership that converts credit card points to cash, help to offset county expenses while streamlining payment operations. The award-winning credit card reimbursement program allows the Clerk’s office to earn cashback rewards when county vendors are paid by credit card rather than going through the process of cutting a check. Revenue from the program is given annually to the county to support general operations and minimize costs to residents and visitors.
The program not only lessens the burden on taxpayers, it also provides county vendors an option for faster payment. “As Chief Financial Officer for St. Lucie County, it is my responsibility to ensure we do not leave any taxpayer dollars on the table,” said Clerk Miller. “In addition to being efficient, this program is one more way your Clerk’s office protects taxpayer funds and provides revenue that would otherwise be unretrievable.” To ensure proper checks and balances, the Clerk is designated by the state constitution as the county’s Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for processing and auditing all county bills. For more information about the Clerk’s office, please visit www. stlucieclerk.com or call 772-4626900.

Veterans Honored in Many Ways: Special Ceremonies at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center CHAIRMAN, BREVARD VETERANS COUNCIL
For many years the Veterans Memorial Center has held a Ceremony of Remembrance for the Four Immortal Chaplains of World War II on the first Sunday afternoon in February to coincide with 3-4 February, 1943, the date of their heroism after their troop ship, the USS Dorchester, was sunk off the coast of Canada. In 2022 the VMC decided to expand it to honor even more Veterans throughout history. Here are just a few highlights: 1. 14 Women Veterans from several eras were specially honored by St Francis Reflections. 2. More than 20 Vietnam Era Veterans were pinned and presented a welcome home certificate by 8 members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. 3. 10 blood donations were given and nine other appointments were made. 4. 110 attendees toured the National Wreaths Across America national mobile Van.
DUERK from page 4
recently announced it expects to start receiving residents at the Lake Baldwin facility sometime this year. Earlier this month, it made a call for public input for naming the facility. The Lake Baldwin project is a renovation of a former federal Department of Veteran Affairs nursing facility. The federal Veterans department turned over the facility to the state after the Orlando VA Medical Center moved to Lake Nona. Former congressman John Mica got legislation through the Congress that allowed the state to take ownership of the 112-bed nursing home at the former medical center site. The facility sat vacant for a couple years before the handover and spent a couple more awaiting renovation. The refurbishments began in August, 2019.
Likely names In addition to the usual rule of naming state Veterans nursing homes after deceased Medal of Honor recipients credited to Florida by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the state gives preference to those with strong ties to the homes’ areas. For example, it was all but inevitable that the state would name the Port St. Lucie facility the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’
DAV National Commander Andy Marshall gave a great keynote talk. 6. The Marine Corps League conducted a great Color Guard and Immortal Four Chaplains Ceremony. 7. Lonnie and Delinda Beach Band came through with good sound and music. 8. Veteran Connections to a New Life served some good food and almost ran out of hamburgers. 9. We had more than 20 Veteran organizations and other vendors share the day. 10. Quilts of Valor got more than a few questions and possible applicants. 11. Space Coast Daily/Friday Night Locker Room captured all the ceremonies. And much more! 5.

It was truly a memorable event honoring our Veterans at a time of year when the Four Chaplains are commemorated for their self-sacrifice and valor, without regard for creed. To learn more about this event and many others at the VMC, along with ongoing initiatives like providing scholarships, Veteran
Nursing Home. That facility will have residents by May, according to the state Veterans department. Copas was a Fort Pierce native who served and died in the Vietnam War. Veteran Voice has identified the four most likely candidates for the Orlando Veterans home to be named after. In the order of them receiving of the Medal of Honor, they’re: Robert Miller McTureous Jr.; Larry Eugene Smedley; Robert J. Miller; and Alwyn C. Cashe. My guess is the two names that’ll have the strongest local support are Smedley and Cashe. Smedley grew up in Orlando and joined the Marine Corps not far from where the Lake Baldwin facility is. He served and died in the Vietnam War. Cashe grew up in the Sanford/Oviedo area and only recently had his Silver Star upgraded to the Medal of Honor after a 16-year wait. He served and died in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Of those two, I lean toward supporting naming the Lake Baldwin facility the Alwyn C. Cashe State Veterans’ Nursing Home. That’s because the Lake Baldwin renaming is the first, and likely last, chance the state has to name one of its Veterans homes for a post9/11 Medal of Honor recipient. There are two names that can accomplish that. Cashe, of course, but also Robert J. Miller, who moved to Seminole County with his family shortly before joining the Army in 2003. He’s interred in Castleberry. He served and died in Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan.

The naming exception The Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans’ Nursing Home was opened in 2004. The 120-bed facility is in Port Charlotte. Jacobson was born and joined the service in New York. So, that’s the state the Congressional Medal of Honor Society credits the World War II Veteran to. What makes Jacobson worthy of an exception to the usual state Veterans homes naming rules is he served in the Marine Corps, then the Florida National Guard for about eight months, and transferred back to his beloved Marines. He moved to Port Charlotte in 1987 after retirement. He died a transplanted Floridian in 2000 at age 74.
Duerk deserves similar honor Duerk, I believe, deserves a waiver of usual Veterans homes’ naming rules, because by the nature of what Navy careers were available to her, she had zero chance to receive the Medal of Honor. Nevertheless, while the Benevolence was a late arriver to the Pacific during World War II, her shipmates and Duerk had no idea how long they’d be sailing in harm’s way. They and she accepted the risk of catastrophic injuries and death same as any wartime Sailor. But, Duerk was highly limited in what military
recognitions she’d qualify for had war come hard at her. The only woman to receive the Medal of Honor was Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. That was in the Civil War. Dr. Walker, by the way, was at first unable to become an Army surgeon, even though she graduated from Syracuse Medical College, because … she was a woman. Over time, Walker forced the Army to recognize her medical degree and skills and make her a surgeon. While we have a unique opportunity to name a state Veterans nursing home after a post-9/11 servicemember, we also have a unique opportunity to recognize a courageous Sailor and woman who, by any measure, went above and beyond the call of duty in keeping with the highest traditions of military service. Duerk continued the exemplary service by helping neighbors get the best medical care in her adopted Central Florida community. Surely we should ask, and the state should respond, to doing something at the Lake Baldwin home to give Rear Adm. Alene Duerk her due honor.
To nominate candidates’ names To nominate naming candidates, send a letter postmarked by March 11 to: Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Attn: Communications Director. The Capitol, Suite 2105. 400 S. Monroe St. Tallahassee, FL 32399-0001.
