IRSC Earns 2021-2022 Military Friendly® School Designation INDIAN RIVER STATE COLLEGE

Indian River State College (IRSC) has earned the 2021–2022 Military Friendly® School designation from Viqtory, a Veteran-founded workforce-development company. Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-2022 survey, with only 747 earning the designation. “We are honored by this recognition as a Military Friendly® school,” says Christine Denaro, Veterans Benefits Advisor. “IRSC has a deeply held commitment to provide our Veterans with the best experience possible as a student at our College. Judging criteria Methodology, criteria, and

weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey response set and government/ agency public data sources, within a logic-based scoring assessment. Measurements include the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student Veterans. Meet Dan and Annie Nguyen. They have an amazing story of survival, bravery and dedication. Annie was a young teenager in 1988, when she and her younger sister and brother escaped from Vietnam on an overloaded small, 42-foot boat into the great Pacific Ocean. Annie says they spent five days at sea before a freighter rescued them. The ship

brought them to a refugee camp on an island in Malaysia, where after a year they were able to come to America. Annie and her younger siblings were kept together. They were sponsored by Catholic Community Services, and placed in a foster home in Tacoma, Wash., just the three siblings together. Annie’s grandparents had fled from China many years before, and now their father arranged for them to flee to a better life in America. He had heard there was a hurricane,

and thought all the children must have died at sea. But luckily, they survived the first part of the journey, and then all the way to America. Annie went to high school and worked hard to learn English. She met Dan and married him when she was 20. They moved to Florida, where he had extended family, and then moved to Merritt Island six years ago when Dan got a job with SpaceX as a welder. The couple has four boys. Two of the boys are in the mil-

itary, Kevin, in the Navy and Brendon, a Marine. The older of the two other boys, Justin, is studying for an advanced degree, and the younger boy, Cardin, is in high school. Annie now works full-time as a manicurist, and is always smiling, even after what she survived. Her family keeps in close touch with their extended family, and though they are proud Americans, they continue with many Vietnamese traditions, especially honoring their ancestors.

A ‘visit’ on Memorial Day

It started out as a single Tweet, only likely to be read by a few people. The Tweeter, Emily Domenech, did not have a blue check by her Twitter handle. She was not famous. She was simply a patriot from a military family, who served in a civilian capacity at the Pentagon — and whose grandfather, former Army Col. John Domenech, is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Each Memorial Day, she’d make the pilgrimage to visit his gravesite to honor and commune with the man who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Emily saw last year that it was abundantly clear the usual crowds were not there at Arlington due to the pandemic. Only family members of the fallen were allowed in. “Typically, hundreds of people would be there to honor their fallen loved ones. But in 2020, even on Memorial Day, the grounds were eerily empty,” she wrote in an article for Fox News.

Caring gesture mushrooms Emily’s original idea was to take photographs of fallen servicemembers’ gravesites to furnish to loved ones who couldn’t visit, whether due to COVID or too much distance. Her Tweet said: “Does anyone have buddies buried in Arlington who they would like visited

today? Since only family members are allowed in, I would be honored to pay respects on your behalf.” She thought her offer would gather a few responses — but within minutes, responses came flooding in from all over the country. Emily was overwhelmed. She felt it was her responsibility to honor all of the requests, but she was only one person. So she contacted The Travis Manion Foundation, and got in touch with the President, Gold Star family member Ryan Manion. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Travis Manion was killed April 29, 2007, while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Anbar Province, Iraq, and was Ryan’s brother. The mission of the foundation is “to empower Veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations.” It conducts a variety of initiatives, such as its Heroes Run, Operation Legacy, Marine Corps Marathon participation and participation in local events around the country — and now there’s The Honor Project.

‘Activating to honor the heroes’ The Honor Project matches up the names of the fallen with volunteers who will visit their gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. The volunteers will post photographs on Twitter (#TheHonorProject), and, for purchase from the foundation, can emplace special Flags of Valor, crafted by combat Veterans. The project anticipates posting gravesite photos on other social media platforms as well, like Facebook and Instagram.

And it’s not just a one-time effort. “While COVID-19 restrictions drove us to create this project, it was clear from the response last year that this is a real, ongoing need. So many families just simply live too far away to visit their loved ones on Memorial Day,” Emily wrote. “So we’re asking families of our fallen military members buried in Arlington National Cemetery to allow us to honor your fallen hero’s legacy this Memorial Day by requesting a visit from a volunteer. “Our goal will be to honor 4,000 fallen heroes who’ve been laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery this Memorial Day Weekend by placing a flag and sharing their story on social media with #TheHonorProject hashtag.”

We will remember them The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, The Old Guard, places flags on every grave at Arlington each Memorial Day. It is a comfort to so many families to know that the military honors their loved ones. Rain or shine, regardless of virus restrictions, no Memorial Day passes without each fallen Veteran having his or her own flag. Now there’s a way for families and friends to have someone much like themselves, who perhaps has also lost a loved one, to share in a personal way by volunteering to visit the graves. How To Help A Person Who Is Struggling With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Stanley Popovich FOR VETERAN VOICE

Do you know someone who struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and you don’t know how to help them? It can be frustrating to watch someone you know struggle with their mental health and not be able to do anything about it. As a result, here are eight tips on how to help the person cope in these kinds of situations: 1. Learn as much as you can about PTSD: There are many books and information that will educate you on how to deal with PTSD and other mental health issues. Share this information with the person who is having a difficult time. 2. Be understanding and patient with the person who is struggling: Dealing with PTSD, depression, and anxiety can be difficult to manage. Do not make things worse by getting into arguments with someone who is suffering. Yelling will only make things worse. 3. Talk to the person instead of talking at them: It is important not to lecture the person who is struggling with PTSD. Talk to the person about their issues without being rude. Most people will listen if you approach them in a proper manner. It is also important to listen to what the other person has to say so you get an idea of where that person is coming from.

4. Find out the reasons why the person won’t get help: Some PTSD sufferers may not want to get help for various reasons. If this happens, find out the reasons why that person won’t talk to a counselor. Addressing a person’s issues and fears of getting assistance will go a long way in convincing them to get treatment. 5. Getting help is not a sign of weakness: Some people may think that getting help is a sign of weakness. In this case, remind the individual that everybody learns new things on a daily basis. Encourage the person who is strugStan Popovich gling that there is nothing wrong with learning something new in their life. 6. Find a local PTSD group: It is important to get the individual who is struggling to join a local support group so they can get advice from others who are in the same boat. Many people who are struggling with PTSD will be better able to relate to those who may have similar experiences and insights. 7. Dealing with the bad dreams: Many people dealing with PTSD may get nightmares regarding their past experiences. It is not easy

to stop the nightmares, but you can start to reduce the frequency of these dreams by talking to someone who knows how to deal with PTSD. 8. Take advantage of the help that is available around you: If possible, talk to a professional who can help you manage your PTSD. They will be able to provide you with additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current problem. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves in the long run because they will become better able to deal with their problems in the future.
