A bagpiper from the Army’s 7th Special Forces Group, headquartered at Florida’s Eglin Air Force Base, plays at a ceremony last October recognizing the sacrifices of Special Forces Soldiers. There were Irish-born service members from the War of Independence forward, but it was the Civil War that solidified their place in America and the military. Bagpipers have been part of Ireland’s military traditions since at least the 16th century. The 1581 print “Image of Irelande” depicts a bagpiper rallying troops in the middle of a battle.
