INDIAN RIVER COLONY CLUB
Indian River Colony Club in Viera is a 55+ golf community on a mission. Largely comprised of military Veterans, IRCC members are known for their volunteerism and philanthropy. The ongoing practice of donating to an assortment of Veterans’ causes and charities embodies the community motto of “service to those who served.” On February 10, retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Brian Whalen presented a $5,000 check from the Indian River Colony Club Foundation to Veterans Connections to a New Life, a Central Florida-based not-for-profit organization that provides free services to Veterans. The funds donated to the 501(c)(3) organization will help ensure returning military Veterans successfully transition back to civilian life after the completion of their service. Veterans Connections to a New Life uses certified life coaches and nationally certified, peer support specialists in their Veteran outreach, specializing in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Founder of Veterans Connections to a New Life, Don Pearsall was pleased to accept the monetary assistance from Indian River Colony Club to benefit transitioning Brevard Veterans. “It’s people like the patriots at IRCC that make it possible for us to provide the help that Veterans need,” said Pearsall. “Many of our warriors are leaving the service with no direction. Our main mission is to provide unique and personalized service support to our homeless, less fortunate and at-risk Veterans who are struggling to transition back into civilian life.” Don Pearsall, a twice-wounded Vietnam combat Veteran, founded Veterans Connections to a New Life in 2014, with a mission to help Veterans transition to civilian life. Veterans with immediate needs are given financial
assistance for gas, repairs, utilities, clothing and housing, along with professional counseling and guidance to aid toward transition. Pearsall’s book, “Back from the Front” addresses post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as the primary cause of difficulty for Veterans transitioning to civilian life. The book is available for sale on ConnectionstoaNewLife.com, with all proceeds going to support the nonprofit.
Dedicated supporter The Indian River Colony Club community of nearly 800 homes is a dedicated supporter of Veterans’ causes. In 2019, they were presented with the Outstanding Military Service Award by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, for their ongoing efforts on behalf of Veterans. Viera’s very first neighborhood, Indian River Colony Club is known as “The Place Patriots Call Home.” A haven for military Veterans, the par72 private golf course community has a patriotic culture and country club amenities for active adults aged 55 and over. Residents have dedicated their lives to military service and continue their efforts in retirement, with a host of ongoing efforts for the betterment of Brevard County Veterans and the regional military community. In addition to significant contributions made by the community’s charitable foundation, the 2019 Outstanding Military Service Award cited ongoing service and generosity toward Veterans and military-related causes, including participation in and/or donations to Veteran related organizations, including the Veterans Transitional Facility, Down the Road Thrift Shop, the Veterans Administration, the Cape Canaveral Ladies, the Cape Canaveral Cemetery, the USO (United Service Organizations), Honor Flight, Patrick Air Force Base, Veterans Treatment Court, Veterans Memorial Center, Wreaths

ANALYSIS FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
It was a pleasant Friday night in April on Jacksonville Beach. State Road A1A was lively with DeSotos, Packards, Studebakers, and other brands of automobiles now the fare of classic car shows. Glenn Miller’s “Moonlight Cocktail” was surely playing on numerous radios. Folks were walking on the beach enjoying Florida’s all too short spring. Some were on the local pier dancing. America was officially at war with Germany. Had been since Congress declared it on Dec. 11, 1941. But it probably didn’t feel much like the war existed that night to the hundreds, maybe thousands, out in Jacksonville Beach. Then a column of fire erupted over the Atlantic Ocean, followed by an audible boom about four seconds later. That explosion sent an unambiguous message to the people who saw it — the Germans were here, here in Florida’s waters, bringing the war with them. Those who weren’t already out heard the explosion and hurried to see the burning ship. Some folks saw the surfaced U-123 swing around the burning Gulfamerica to further damage her hull with a deck gun. German U-boats sank at least 40 sizable ships off Florida’s 8,400 miles of coastline, along with an uncounted number of smaller vessels. At least 10 of the notable U-boat attacks were along Veteran Voice’s coverage area, Martin north to Volusia counties. But, the sinking of the Gulfamerica was almost certainly the most witnessed of them all.
The Drumbeat Shortly after the United States declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on the U.S. and launched Operation
Image courtesy of the State Library and Archives of Florida Jacksonville resident Phil May sent Gen. Albert Blanding a telegram urging him to recommend a shoreline blackout following the well-witnessed and dramatic 1942 sinking of the Gulfamerica off Florida’s coast. May apparently mixed events, and stated “two American ships” in a telegram clearly referencing the Gulfamerica attack. It’s not surprising May mixed events, because German U-boats were scoring numerous successful attacks close to U.S. shores in the first half of 1942.
Drumbeat, a U-boat war on American naval assets and shipping along the Atlantic coast. By all accounts, the submarine offensive was, at first, shockingly successful. The Florida Division of Historical Resources’ “Florida World War II Heritage Trail” states that the Germans sank about 400 ships in seven months. Others put the count much higher. For example, a National Geographic’s Drain the Oceans episode put the count at more than 600. Part of that discrepancy is based on how Operation Drumbeat sinkings are counted. In some cases ships sank due to its disruptions rather than torpedoes. Historian Scott Grant told FirstCoast.TV those attacks resulted in the deaths of about 3,100 in Merchant Marine service in 1942. In exchange, the Germans lost 22 U-boats. Only one was sank off Florida’s coasts. That was U-157. The Coast Guard’s Thetis sank her with depth charges southwest of Key West. Florida waters were favorite hunting grounds for the
U-boats. According to National Geographic, at the time most of the world’s oil was coming out of and was being shipped through and from the oil rich Gulf and surrounding areas. A lot of the oil tankers were hanging a left at the Straits of Florida and heading north along the Atlantic Coast. Civilian and military authorities were slow to implement steps to reduce the losses. The U-boats had a lot of lit coastline to spot ships at night for weeks of the offensive. There was probably some paralyzing disbelief among civilian and military leaders at first. But, authorities had a conundrum, too, of course. They wanted to keep news of German U-boats prowling the waters under the proverbial surface. If folks panicked over the Germans being that close to American shores, there could be a lot of additional economic and social mayhem multiplying the damage the U-boats did. Indeed, despite innumerable witnesses to the attack on the Gulfamerica, it was barely mentioned in newspapers thanks to government and self-censorship at the time.
Korvettenkapitän (Corvette Captain) Reinhard Hardegen was on his second Drumbeat patrol with the German Kriegsmarine IXB U-boat when he encountered the Gulfamerica. The U-123 had a successful first Drumbeat patrol. The crew sank six ships, which spent the torpedo supplies. The port engine was acting up, too, so Hardegen headed home to get repairs and resupply. On the way, the Norwegian whaler Kosmos II spotted U-123 and attempted to ram her. Hardegen narrowly outran the attack. Hardegen spotted a British freighter and Norwegian tanker after that narrow miss. Out of torpedoes, the crew of the U-123 used the deck gun to sink them. Hardegen might sound like a heartless war machine wearing flesh, but he actually showed compassion where he could. For example, after getting killing shots in on the Pan Norway he ordered a nearby Greek freighter to rescue survivors. He even waited around to make sure the freighter got everybody out of the water. Before even getting back to Germany, Hardegen was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross and got a hero’s welcome at the port. Hardegen and U-123 headed out for the second Drumbeat patrol on March 2, 1942. On March 22, the U-123 sank the Muskogee. Two days later it sank the British tanker Empire Steel. On March 26 Hardegen made a big mistake. He attacked the USS Atik, a so-called Q-ship, a war vessel made to appear like a merchant ship to sucker U-boats to their deaths. U-123 won the unexpected fight, but was damaged in the bargain. U-123 attacked a few ships off Florida’s coast in early April. One night it sank two tank-

Letter to the EDITOR
House A Vet has busy Easter season, ‘springs’ into April, future, with major activities To the Editor: Hope all had a Happy Easter! We’re already into the month of April and it’s busy as usual. First, a huge thank-you to the Knights of Columbus and Saint Bernadette’s Church. The two-day food drive showered us with more than 2,000 lbs of pantry items and $500 in cash donations! Thank you to our volunteers that came in to help sort all the donations so they could promptly be prepared for distribution. On April 17th from 12-4 p.m., House A Vet will be manning the bar at Treasure Coast Harley Davidson in Stuart to benefit an injured rider. Chris is an all-around awesome human being, and we hope you will come out to support him and his family at this event. We are so grateful to have a professional hairdresser once again this month providing FREE Veteran haircuts on Wednesday, April 21st. This is a first-come, first-served service beginning at noon, and sign-up takes place the day of at the pantry. On April 22nd, Treasure Coast Harley Davidson will have their monthly bike night from 6 to 9 p.m. They have been such a generous partner with House A Vet, and we are lucky to be manning the bar at the event as well as being the recipient of the tips and a portion of the proceeds! LUNCH & LEARN: TD Bank will be here on April 28 working to help Veterans improve their financial situations. Information on the prior events is available in the office, and we’re happy to share with any Veterans interested in improving their financial health.
Don’t forget each Wednesday of the month is a free hot lunch served right here in our pantry in Stuart from noon to 2 p.m., and a VA representative is here to help in real time with any issues you may be having. It’s onthe-spot assistance in navigating the system, and we are so thankful to be able to offer this priceless service on a regular basis. The lunch-and-learn events require advance registration as space is limited. Simply send us an email or give us a call and let us know you’re coming. We are continuing to gather basic school supplies so Veterans’ children and grandchildren return to school next year with what they need according to the local school lists. Once the details are ready from Martin and St. Lucie Schools, we will provide that information to you. If you know of a Veteran who could benefit from this assistance, please be sure to pass this along. We have backpacks in the office ready to fill! Looking ahead to May — We will be pulling the winning raffle ticket for the Pro Street Custom bike on May 22nd at Treasure Coast Harley Davidson. The event is taking place from noon to 5 p.m. If you know of any vendor that wishes to participate, please share this email address or have them contact me in the office. Tickets for the bike will be sold up to and on that day until 1,500 are sold. We are excited to announce that our first ever Freedom Festival will take place on Saturday, July 3rd, in Jensen Beach. Headlined by the Glenn Baker Band, with a #1 single on the independant country music list, Glenn is a true patriot and talented artist (as well as a Veteran himself)! If you are available to volunteer for any of the events, including bingo or the food pantry, please let us know. Whether it’s an hour or the day, every minute you can help out is appreciated! Let me close by saying THANK YOU! It’s evident every day that you are out there sharing information about House A Vet and what
they do. Wearing your hats and T-shirts, forwarding literature and just talking about what you’ve seen, done or had brought in new volunteers and partners to help continue the mission. NONE of this is possible without you, and everything goes back into helping our local Veterans. Thank you and God Bless America! Kevin Donahue Director House A Vet Office (772) 678-8149 www.HouseAVet.org
Grant, training highlights of DFL during month of March To the Editor: Dogs For Life, Vero Beach, was blessed by Head Heart & Hands, which continued their support of DFL by awarding us with a 2021 grant. Support like this allows us to continue our mission of training service dogs for Veterans. Additionally, we had a great time at Einstein Bagels during our public access training. Our service dog teams were fantastic. As part of the training for Veterans and their service dogs, being able to go out and about in public is extremely important. As a reminder, we rely on donations to help our mission of matching Veterans with service dogs, and training them, free of charge to the Veterans, whether it be for physical, PTSD or other needs. If you’re interested in helping, please visit dogsforlivevb.org for more information. Thank you, DOGS FOR LIFE

The real “Taps”
Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
At his website, www.Tapsbugler.com, Villaneuva has the real story of “Taps”. Turns out that like so many tunes, calls and songs of the Civil War, “Taps” was a variation of an existing bugle call, which was itself a variation of another bugle call. In July 1862, Gen. Daniel Butterfield and brigade bugler Oliver Norton crafted the new extinguish-lights bugle call. Butterfield felt the Army’s official end-of-day bugle call, which was apparently a variation of a French bugle call, was too stiff and formal. While the two men later gave slightly different accounts of how “Taps” was composed, the new end-of-day bugle call caught on quickly with Union and Confederate buglers. Union and Confederate camps were often close enough that fifers, buglers and drummers could hear one another. Villaneuva said that “Taps” has been an official bugle call at military funerals since 1891, but likely was used for that purpose long before then.
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Life is moving along as usual in northeast Central Florida when the familiar, haunting notes sound. G, G, C / G, C, E / G, C, E / G, C, E / G, C, E—. Hearers stop, look up and see a lone trumpeter at a cemetery or a local monument and quickly piece together why he’s playing the most familiar 24 notes in military bugle calls on that day. Others don’t until they talk to him. “I do keep an eye on the calendar for special days like Dec. 7,” said Larry Heinz. “I usually go out and perform at four or five different places that day.” Of course, Dec. 7 is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Heinz is a member of TAPS FOR VETERANS, an organization of volunteer musicians who perform “Taps” at Veterans’ funerals and other events.
Pandemic doesn’t stop honors The SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 world of the last year has had fewer funerals and memorial services than usual, and not all significant anniversaries are marked with gatherings. March 29 had come and gone for decades with little notation and few memorials. That’s changing. National Vietnam War Veterans Day has been on the federal calendar for four years. Heinz doesn’t wait for people to call him and request “Taps”. On those days that should get some remembrance he’ll just travel to cemeteries and local monuments to play “Taps” for whomever is there, even if it’s just him and the interred women and men he’s honoring. “My father was in World War II,” Heinz said. “A first-class gunner’s mate. By doing this, it brings me closer to him.”
The mythological “Taps” “Taps”’ haunting beauty has a mystique that evokes melancholy images which easily spin themselves into fantastic tales. One of the most circulated tales about “Taps” involves a Civil War Union captain, one Robert Ellicombe. After a fierce day of pitched battle, Capt. Ellicombe heard a wounded Soldier moaning alone in the blackness of night. The captain risked his life that inky evening to retrieve the injured man who was trapped on a narrow piece of torn land separating the battle-hardened Union and Confederate armies. When the

captain neared campfires he realized that he was saving a Confederate soldier — a Confederate soldier who turned out to be his son. The lad had been studying music in the South when the Civil War broke out. Unbeknownst to the captain, the younger Ellicombe volunteered for the Confederate Army. Sadly, the young man died that night, but the heartbroken father found a short bit of music in his son’s pocket. The captain had the uncompleted melody played at his son’s burial the next day. Thus was “Taps” born. Well, like all great stories some fact checking is in order. Back in 2013 Veteran Voice talked to Jari Villaneuva, a member of the Buglers Hall of Fame who’s widely regarded as the foremost expert on military bugle calls. Villaneuva told Veteran Voice the Capt. Robert Ellicombe account is a wonderful, inspiring story, but is all bunk. He’s made a can’t-miss offer to anyone who produced evidence Capt. Ellicombe and his son existed. “I was offering a $2,000, gold-plated bugle,” he said. “All I need is the unit the guy was in and where he’s buried.”
Larry Heinz Heinz is a born musician. “I’ve always been attracted to music,” he said. “Ever since they gave me a plastic recorder. I’d even go on the steps and I’d make up music (on the recorder). I don’t think the teachers knew what I was playing, but I did.” By the mid-1960s Heinz was in high school playing trumpet. After school, he kept playing in various community musical groups and organizations. For example, he’s been in the DeLand Little Symphony and the Daytona Beach Concert Band. When the coronavirus shut down rehearsals and concerts Heinz thought to get involved with volunteer “Taps” performing. He’s done some on request, and others he does “it at the spur of the moment. “Some people are surprised,” he said. “Sometimes you’ll look up and see a Veteran across the cemetery saluting me.” Sometimes widows and widowers, too. Both grieving spouses and those who served and their approach Heinz with their stories. “I’m like a healing person,” Heinz said. “I let them talk. I feel it does them good.” To request a performance of “Taps”, contact Heinz at (386) 717-4506, or email lheinz1950@gmail.com. TAPS FOR VETERANS is online at www.TapsforVeterans.org.

ers. But, they were in shallow water, so were refloated and repaired.
SS Gulfamerica attack The SS Gulfamerica was a new ship on its maiden voyage from Port Arthur, Texas, to New York City carrying 90,000 barrels of furnace oil. The 48-member crew was going it without escort for the 445-foot ship. Around 10 p.m. on April 10 the Gulfamerica was nearing Jacksonville Beach about five miles offshore. All those folks out enjoying the Florida spring were making quite a bit of light. At about 10:20 p.m. U-123 spotted the Gulfamerica against those lights and torpedoed her. The underwater missile struck the #7 tank on the starboard side. The Gulfamerica did a full stop and the crew started evacuating. On the shore people gathered in shared horror at what they were seeing. Some with boats rushed to them to start
rescues. The Coast Guard got to the Gulfamerica in quick order, so the Good Samaritans were up-close witnesses to the calamity. Hardegen did a remarkable thing. He gave the Navy a chance at him. He ordered his crew to surface and take the time to go around to the port side of the Gulfamerica as Floridians watched. He wanted to ventilate the Gulfamerica with the 105mm deck gun aimed away from the people he saw on the shore. The destroyer USS Dahlgren was rushing for U-123. The deck gun shots disoriented the evacuating crew causing, among other things, a lifeboat capsizing. While five died in the explosion and blast, another 14 drowned in the pandemonium. Military airplanes were soon overhead looking for U-123. Patrol boats not involved in the rescues were racing toward her, too. U-123 did a fast dive to evade pursuers, and hit bottom. Only about 20 meters of water separated her from the American Navy — not enough to give her much cover. U-123 made a run. The U-boat had too many eyes on her to slip out of the melee un-
seen. The Dahlgren had U-123. The Dahlgren dropped underwater bombs that injured the already damaged U-123. Hardegen believed his crew and he were good as captured or dead. He ordered secret machinery and code charts destroyed and prepared to abandon ship to the Navy’s waiting arms. But, the Dahlgren stopped the attack for uncertain reasons and moved off. The startled crew of U-123 thanked their lucky stars, made emergency repairs, and resumed the stealthy attacks. On April 13, 1942, Hardegen and his crew sank the Leslie off Cape Canaveral. Not long after that U-123, damaged and out of ammo, headed home after surviving two brushes with the U.S. Navy and scoring a highly witnessed attack that backfired by turning up the American response against Operation Drumbeat.
Hardegen returns to Jacksonville Hardegen was probably feeling his luck was running out, so he went to shore duty after the second patrol. He had also, by then, started
sensing that the Nazis’ luck was going to run out. Hardegen met Adolf Hitler at least twice. Once to receive his Iron Cross, and later as a dinner guest. The second time Hardegen criticized Hitler to his face over focusing on land war and leaving the Kriegsmarine short on resources. For example, Germany had only one aircraft carrier — the Graf Zeppelin — and it pretty much sat out World War II. Hardegen added his to the many military voices urging Hitler to work toward negotiated settlements with the Allies. Jacksonville never forgot the remarkable night when locals witnessed World War II from a Florida beach. Folks in the city invited Hardegen to return as a guest in 1990. Hardegen, humbled by the forgiving hospitality, repeatedly told friends and the press that the city and its people were kind and generous to him. More about the German U-boat offensive off Florida’s shores is in the Florida Heritage Trails publication “World War II Heritage Trail.” It’s available free online at www. dos.myflorida.com/historical/ preservation/heritage-trails.

Marines, Norwegians team up for Arctic exercises
The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit April 7 (local time) through international waters in accordance with international law. The ship’s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific waterway. The United States military will continue to fly, sail, and operate anywhere international law allows.
This year’s Virtual Military Spouse Symposium — scheduled for April 27-29 — is geared for male and female spouses to learn about career development and well-being, whether they’re students or veteran careerists, Military OneSource’s director for military community support programs said. Lee Kelley said the symposiums, which began five years ago with a focus on education and careers, have always been interspersed with issues surrounding well-being that speak to the holistic needs of military spouses. A worldwide endeavor, Kelley said 3,500 spouses from 15 nations attended last year. It’s for military spouses at any stage of their military life, she added.
U.S. Marines and Sailors with Marine Rotational Force-Europe 21.1 enhanced their warfighting ability above the Arctic Circle during exercise Arctic Littoral Strike in Northern Norway from March 11-31. Exercise Arctic Littoral Strike enabled elements from MRF-E 21.1 to experiment with emerging defense concepts and to confront the challenges of anti-access, area-denial capabilities posed by a notional peer adversary. The Camp Lejeune-based Marines and Sailors of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment conducted experimentation of the future force by supporting simulated sea-denial operations in arctic littoral terrain.
First-ever Space Test Fundamentals class graduates The U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School graduated the first-ever Space Test Fundamentals class April 6 at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. Fifteen enlisted, officer, civilian Airmen and Guardians represent the first class dedicated to testing within the newly contested domain of Space. Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, the U.S. Space Force chief of space operations, was on-hand to give the graduation address. “You were handpicked from a pool of over 160 applicants, not only to attend this inaugural Space Test course, but also to help us build this course and define its future as the initial Space Test cadre,” said Raymond. “You were the “Beta testers” of the course itself, simultaneously studying hard and developing the future of our space test education and training program.” The course enables the USSF to enhance its test and evaluation mission and multiply its ability to deliver combat-ready space forces.
Military sexual assault focus of new independent review In February, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III announced the establishment of an independent review commission on sexual assault. According to the IRC’s charter, the commission will focus on evaluating military policies, programs and processes related to sexual assault. It will also review and assess the best practices from industry, academia and other organizations. Finally, the IRC will generate recommended policy changes and proposals to improve prevention efforts in the services. That commission, chaired by Lynn Rosenthal, has 90-days to conduct its work before reporting back to Austin and the president. It has just recently entered the third week of its efforts.

Passing of Prince Philip marks loss of a strong tie to Special Relationship His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Buckingham Palace, 1992.
Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Most people know that Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died April 9 at the age of 99, was an officer in the Royal Navy during World War II. He gave up his office to marry her, and give his life to service to the Crown of Great Britain. And he was a best friend to us, the “colonies,” who beat the British to make our own country. In his alltoo-short military career, the Duke of Edinburgh had opportunities to work with the U.S. to help win World War II. According to an article for Sky News (news.sky.com), the Navy was the place for Prince Philip to be, from a very young age: “Philip Mountbatten’s first encounter with the Royal Navy was as an 18-month-old prince. “When his uncle King Constantine I was overthrown in an anti-royalist coup, Philip was put in a makeshift cot made out of an orange crate, and evacuated from Greece on HMS Calypso. “Sixteen-and-a-half years later, in 1939, he joined the Navy as a cadet just before the outbreak of the Second World War.” He was the top graduate at Dartmouth Naval College, when he graduated at age 18.
February 1941. During this time, among other engagements, he was involved in the Battle of Crete, and was mentioned in dispatches for his service during the battle of Cape Matapan, in which he controlled the battleship’s searchlights. He was also awarded the Greek War Cross. In June 1942, he was appointed to the destroyer HMS Wallace, which was involved in convoy escort tasks on the east coast of Britain, as well as the Allied invasion of Sicily.
Wartime service
Actions at sea
Prince Philip’s first ship posting was as a midshipman aboard HMS Ramillies, part of the Mediterranean fleet in 1940. He spent four months on the Ramillies, protecting convoys of the Australian Expeditionary Force in the Indian Ocean, followed by shorter postings on HMS Kent, on HMS Shropshire, and in British Ceylon. After the invasion of Greece by Italy in October 1940, he was transferred from the Indian Ocean to the battleship HMS Valiant in the Mediterranean Fleet. Prince Philip was commissioned a sub-lieutenant in
In July 1942, Prince Philip was promoted to lieutenant, one of the youngest, at 21, to attain the position of second in command. In October of that year, he participated in the Allied invasion of Sicily. At one point, his ship, the destroyer HMS Wallace, was under attack by enemy night bombers. The Prince fashioned a raft on which had been filled with smoke bombs, and the ruse successfully diverted the planes away from the Wallace. He had to work closely with Americans during the operation, and made a point long afterward to look up some of

his fellow Allied officers. In 1944, the Prince moved on to a new destroyer, HMS Whelp, where he saw service with the British Pacific Fleet in the 27th Destroyer Flotilla. He was present in Tokyo Bay when the instrument of Japanese surrender was signed. He returned to the United Kingdom on the Whelp in January 1946, and was posted as an instructor at HMS Royal Arthur, the Petty Officers’ School in Corsham, Wiltshire.
Marriage, consortship and sad farewell to Naval life According to Wikipedia.org (sourced): “In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. During the visit, the Queen and Louis Mountbatten asked his nephew Philip to escort the King’s two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, who were Philip’s third cousins through Queen Victoria, and second cousins once removed through King Christian IX of Denmark. “Elizabeth fell in love with Philip, and they began to ex-
change letters when she was 13 onward.” At first, Prince Philip was looked at kind of sideways by Elizabeth’s parents. It wasn’t as though he weren’t royal enough, but had had a nomadic, chaotic childhood, due to his mother’s mental illness struggles and being thrown out of Greece. The Princess was adamant, though, so when the Prince proposed in in the summer of 1946, Philip asked the King for his daughter’s hand in marriage, the King granted his request, provided that any formal engagement be delayed until Elizabeth’s 21st birthday the following April. By March 1947, Philip had abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles, had adopted the surname Mountbatten from his mother’s family, and had become a naturalized British subject. The engagement was announced to the public on July 10, 1947. Philip and Elizabeth were married in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey, recorded and broadcast by BBC radio to 200 million people around the world. After the honeymoon, Prince Philip, now going by his new title Duke of Edinburgh, returned to the Navy at first in a desk job at the Admiralty, and later on a staff course at the Naval Staff College, Greenwich. From 1949, he was stationed in Malta after being posted as the first lieutenant of the destroyer HMS Chequers, the lead ship of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean Fleet. Both the Duke and Princess Elizabeth remembered the days in Malta as some of the happiest in their lives. The Duke’s active Navy service expired in 1951. King George VI was in very bad health, and the young couple knew Elizabeth would ascend the throne sooner rather than later, so Philip did not extend his service. He described the decision as a “wrench,” but was always a man of duty above all else. When the King died in February 1952, the

Copas home gets administrator At long last, new Veterans’ home head on track to begin work
Lake Baldwin State Veterans’ Nursing Home.
Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
The Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home has crossed a major milestone — hiring has started. The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs has worked on opening the home — the state’s seventh Veterans’ nursing home — for almost eight years. “Lots has happened since we last spoke (in January),” said Steve Murray, communications director at the state Veterans department. “First of all, we have hired a home administrator for the facility. (April 1) is his first day.” The administrator is Steven Rule. Veteran Voice will profile him in coming editions. “It’s his first day, because on March 12, just a couple weeks ago, we received the certificate of occupancy from the (Florida) Agency for Health Care Administration.” That allowed the state Veterans department, FDVA, to start having workers go inside the facility and outfit it with beds, furniture and other equipment. What’s more, instead of writing that the home is at the western end of Southwest Tradition Parkway in Port St. Lucie, Veteran Voice can now say the home is at 13000 S.W. Tradition Parkway in Port St. Lucie. “We have posted the mailing address of the home,” Murray said. “The home is now receiving mail.” But — “We’re still on tap for an opening of the home in the second half of 2021,” Murray said. “I don’t have a specific day, or even month.” That dating is actually another extension for a proposed opening time. Earlier this year, the acting director of the state Veterans department — retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. James S. “Hammer” Hartsell — told a Florida Senate committee that he aimed to get the new Veterans home opened in the first half of 2021. In fairness, the delay is not the FDVA’s fault. The SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted everything about opening a new nursing facility from the available labor pool to supply chain problems making it harder to open a home.
Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home The Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home has been a seeming case study for Murphy’s Law. From the start it’s been bedeviled by unusual delays. The State Legislature started a site-selection process for what’d become the Copas home back in 2013. By fall of 2014 a site-selection committee had picked

Port St. Lucie for the next home. Marion County fervently protested when the committee made its recommendation. St. Lucie edged out the other county in the committee’s scoring by a hair’s width. The governor and cabinet delayed accepting the recommendation until Marion withdrew its bid for the home. St. Lucie’s fight for the home wasn’t over. The first projected groundbreaking date was the tail end of 2015 with a projected opening by the start of 2018. However, there were delays due to a design spat between the state and federal governments that threatened to derail construction of the Veterans nursing home. The federal Department of Veteran Affairs is paying 65 percent of the construction cost, so has a lot of say in the design. Local officials and Veterans strongly advocated in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., for resolving the dispute and getting the home built. The state got the greenlight from Washington in early 2017. Construction started in June of 2018, with a projected opening in the summer of 2020. Of course, then the Florida Department of Health announced the first cases of COVID-19 in the Sunshine State on March 2 last year. Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in all 67 counties on March 9. The state Veterans department closed its homes to new residents and visitors on March 11. It’s since conditionally reopened the homes to admissions and visitors. For more than a year, the department has simultaneously worked to keep residents safe from the coronavirus pandemic, get needed supplies for its current six Veterans homes, and get needed supplies to open two new homes. The second home is, for now, called the
The VA had a nursing home at Lake Baldwin when it was the Orlando VA Medical Center. The medical center moved to a full-on hospital at Lake Nona a few years back. Former congressman John Mica got legislation through the Congress in 2015 that allowed the state to take ownership of the 112-bed nursing home at the former medical center site. Before that legislation went through, all the equipment at the former nursing home was taken out, and the building served as office space and storage. The FDVA is in the middle or refitting and refurbishing it to be a state Veterans nursing home. “We have the (Agency for Health Care Administration) team coming in in April, so we can get a certificate of occupancy for that facility as well.” That home will be renamed. The state Veterans department names its Veterans nursing homes after Medal of Honor recipients who joined the military from Florida who have strong ties to the homes’ locations. The qualifying Medal of Honor recipients to name state Veterans nursing homes after is only 23 long. That will soon become 24. Oviedo’s Alwyn C. “Al” Cashe will receive a posthumous Medal of Honor from President Joe Biden. President Donald Trump finalized an upgrade of Cashe’s Silver Star to the Medal of Honor shortly before Biden’s inauguration. Eight Medal of Honor recipients are already namesakes for state Veterans facilities — seven nursing homes and an assisted living facility — so the list for Orlando is 15, and soon to be 16, long. The most likely candidates for the criteria are Casselberry’s Robert J. Miller, who died in 2008; Orlando’s Larry Eugene Smedley, who died in 1967; and Altoona’s Robert Miller McTureous Jr., who died in 1945. Altoona, in Lake County, is about halfway between Orlando and Ocala, so McTureous might be a bit of a stretch to some for having ties to the Orlando area. Cashe will be added to that list after the president awards him the Medal of Honor. He died in Iraq in 2005. Smedley is the apparent frontrunner for having the Lake Baldwin nursing home named after him. Although he was born in Virginia, Smedley moved to Orlando sometime in his elementary school years. He attended Howard Junior High, which is now a middle school, and Colonial High School. He left school early to sign up for the Marine Corps at a station not three miles from where the nursing home will be.
