Eighty-three World War II veterans took a trip of a lifetime April 16 aboard their Southeast Florida Honor Flight to visit monuments at Washington,

D.C. Their day began early — it was necessary to be at Palm Beach International Airport between 5:30 and 6 a.m. to check in — and ended late, around 9 p.m. In between was a whirlwind of activity, all meant to honor the heroes of World War II and to thank them for helping to save freedom. ment to the visits to the war memorials, it becomes almost overwhelming. And it becomes personal, as well. “I’m just continually amazed by the stories these veterans tell,” said Janet Hoose, vice chair of Southeast Florida Honor Flight. “They talk with their guardians, and many are telling their (war) stories for the first time. Not even their families know.”

Port St. Lucie’s Knights of Columbus, St. Francis of Assisi Assembly, is taking ‘em out to the ballgame. On Friday, May 13, the West Palm Beach Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center will bus about a half dozen veterans at its community living center to see the Mets take on the Fort Myers Miracle.

“This is an annual thing,” Vincent Errico, co-chairman of the event, said. “I believe this is the eighth or ninth.” The Knights purchased 3,000 tickets from the St. Lucie Mets, which it is in turn selling to other lodges. Last year, the organization raised about $2,000 that it presented to West Palm’s Recreational Therapy department. More than that, they veterans get treated
