When the American Revolution was fought in Britain a mission to disrupt British shipping. Things were going OK with that. A week later, Jones brought up an idea with the crew to invade England. Jones had just the place for such an assault in mind — Whitehaven. That happened to be the port where the Scotsman started his sailing career when he was 13. What could go wrong? It’d only been about 700 years since anyone had successfully invaded the British homeland.
Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
One of the greatest battles of the Revolutionary War happened nowhere near the upstart United States. It was a glorious battle that happened on the northwest coast of England itself. Brave American sailors established a beachhead in a courageous amphibious assault that’d bring the British Empire to its knees. OK, it was one ship out raiding a port town with half the crew drinking instead of fighting. But, it really was the day America took the war to British soil.
Jones’ bold play
U.S.S. Ranger The whole affair started on April 10, 1778. The U.S.S. Ranger was under the command of John Paul Jones, a man as famous for his cantankerousness and inability to get along with authority or subordinates alike as he is for his naval genius. Or, at least his naval bravery. OK, Jones’s “bravery” was probably foolhardiness that got lucky a lot. During the war there were

American ships heading to and from France and some skirmishes with British war and merchant ships as a result. Jones was in France with the Ranger getting supplies
and probably meeting with his friend Benjamin Franklin among other things. Jones took the Ranger out from Brest, France, and headed toward the Irish Sea on
Whether Jones was guided by genius or foolhardiness, Whitehaven was a promising prize. Hundreds of merchant ships were anchored close together in its bay with relatively soft guard split between two fortifications. A single fire could conceivably spread fast and take out a lot of Britain’s merchant fleet in one fell swoop. That’d be a whole lot easier than picking off ships one by one on the high seas. On the night of April 22, Jones loaded up 30 crewmen

Lest we forget
Bataan Death March began on April 9, and left lasting legacy Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
After the April 9, 1942, U.S. surrender of the Bataan Peninsula on the main Philippine island of Luzon to the Japanese during World War II (1939-45), the approximately 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to make an arduous 65-mile march to prison camps. The marchers made the trek in intense heat and were subjected to harsh treatment by Japanese guards. Thousands died in what became known as the Bataan Death March.
Background The day after Japan bombed the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, the Japanese invasion of the Philippines began. Within a month, the Japanese had captured Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and the American and Filipino defenders of Luzon (the island on which Manila is located) were forced to retreat to the Bataan Peninsula. For the next three months, the combined U.S.-Filipino army held

out despite a lack of naval and air support. Finally, on April 9, with his forces crippled by starvation and disease, U.S. Gen. Edward King Jr. surrendered his approximately 75,000 troops at Bataan.
The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of more than 7,100 islands. The surrendered Filipinos and Americans soon were rounded up by the Japanese and forced to march some 65
miles from Mariveles, on the southern end of the Bataan Peninsula, to San Fernando. The men were divided into groups of approximately 100, and the march typically took each group around five days to complete. The exact figures are unknown, but it is believed that thousands of troops died because of the brutality of their captors, who starved and beat the marchers, and bayoneted those too weak to walk. Survivors were taken by rail from San Fernando to prisoner-of-war camps, where thousands more died from disease, mistreatment and starvation. America avenged its defeat in the Philippines with the invasion of the island of Leyte in October 1944. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who in 1942 had famously promised to return to the Philippines, made good on his word. In February 1945, U.S.-Filipino forces recaptured the Bataan Peninsula, and Manila was liberated in early March. After the war, an American military tribunal tried Lt. Gen. Homma Masaharu, commander of the Japanese invasion forces in the Philippines. He was held responsible for the death march, a war crime, and was executed by firing squad on April 3, 1946.

Congressman Waltz doesn’t shy from coronavirus “war” analogies ting increasingly hit by waves of suspected and diagnosed coronavirus cases. “These hospitals are the Omaha Beach of this war,” he said on the House floor.
Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Rep. Michael Waltz is also Lt. Col. Michael Waltz. He’s a Ranger School graduate, a combat-decorated Green Beret, and a serving member of the Florida National Guard. Waltz has seen war in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa. Waltz has verbally added the United States and entire globe to the combat zones he’s been in. “I have a military background, 24 years, and I’m in the National Guard,” he told participants in the telephone town hall meeting on Wednesday, April 1. “I was out in uniform yesterday helping at a coronavirus site.”
Waltz shoots straight with his constituents
Waltz broaches Omaha Beach to urge stay-at-home
The Republican congressman was noholds-barred with his constituents about coronavirus’ clear and present threat. “It is deadlier than the flu,” he asserted. Waltz was equally straight about the coronavirus consequences beyond infections and deaths. “The economic impact has, frankly, been devastating,” he said. At press time new jobless claims for the week ending March 28 have hit 6.6 million. Speaking a day before the Labor Department released that eye-popping number, Waltz covered some of the coronavirus’ earlier hit on Florida. “We went from 6,200 (new jobless claims) to 74,000 in the span of a week,” he said. At that time the national number of filings had hit 3.3 million. Before then the largest week of new joblessness claims was in 1982 — almost 700,000 in one week. Waltz urged constituents to focus on the human costs of infections over economic losses and do the best things they can to stop the spread of coronavirus — stay at home as much as possible, wash their hands frequently, and consistently practice social distancing. “I think the word or phrase of the day is ‘personal responsibility,’” he said. “Please abide by the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines.”
This was the second coronavirus town hall Waltz has done since COVID-19 went from being a foreign news story about China and other places to a major domestic crisis with the smallest estimated expected casualties counted in six digits. That turn was around the second week of March depending on people’s perspectives — folks naturally respond to looming crises at different paces. The first of the congressman’s coronavirus telephone town halls was on March 20. In the more recent town hall, Waltz urged participants to think of the present crisis similarly to how America responded Rep. Michael Waltz to World War II with everyone eager to do their parts. Economic Security Act, CARES. Baseballer Lt. Robinson made history on the Halifax Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Major League Baseball recognizes April 15 as Jackie Robinson Day. Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson, of course, is the legendary baseballer who first walked onto the field to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers on that day in 1947. With those steps, Robinson changed baseball and America. Yes, because he was black. Less well known is that Robinson was an Army veteran. He also got plenty of sand on his shoes stomping around the Veteran Voice coverage area and made some history here, too.
Robinson heads to the Army Robinson’s first draft wasn’t into major league baseball. The astonishingly multi-talented athlete’s first draft was into the Army. Biographies, it should be noted, vary on whether Robinson enlisted or was drafted. The Department of Veteran Affairs says he was drafted, but the official Jackie Robinson website declares he enlisted. In 1942 Robinson headed to Fort Riley, Kan., where he met and befriended the famous boxer Joseph “Joe” Louis. Louis helped Robinson — who’d attended the University of California, Los Angeles — get into Officer Candidate School. Robinson, as with everything he did, excelled and got his 2nd Lt. bars at the beginning of 1943. After that he headed to the 761st Tank Battalion, the “Black Panthers,” at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1944, a bit more than a decade before Rosa Parks ignited the Montgomery bus boycott, Robinson refused to move to the back of a military bus. For

Robison played for the Montreal Royals against its parent team, the Brooklyn Dodgers at City Island Ballpark, which was later renamed to honor Robinson. That game was, depending on how one counts baseball games, the first time a black baseballer played in a major-league game in the 20th century. It was in 1946.
that he was court-martialed. His unit headed to Europe without him, but Robinson beat the court-martial to keep his honorable discharge. Not surprisingly, while awaiting his discharge Lt. Robinson spent time at Camp Breckinridge, Ky., as an athletic coach.
Robinson heads to baseball Before joining the Army, Robinson was in a variety of scholastic sports — he was the first student at UCLA to letter in
four sports, baseball, football, basketball and track. After dropping out of UCLA just shy of graduation for financial reasons, he played football for the semi-pro Honolulu Bears. He’d also head back to California to play for the Pacific Coast Football League. After serving in the Army, Robinson returned to Los Angeles to play football for the Bulldogs. He then coached at Samuel Huston College in Austin, Texas. The Kansas City Monarchs, a franchise in the Negro leagues, drew him away. Robinson set his sights on
the majors. Turned out the Dodgers had set its sights on getting a black player, the first in major-league baseball since Moses Fleetwood Walker in the 1880s. Wesley “”Branch” Rickey, club president and general manager of the Dodgers, spotted Robinson and offered him a chance to prove his mettle in the Montreal Royals, a Dodgers affiliate team. For Rickey’s plan to integrate the Dodgers to work, the first black player would have to be an extraordinary man who could be patient with racist

‘WE WILL WIN’
Soldier on front lines of virus battle in NYC shares experience of briefing President Army Spc. Samuel Shepard and other members of the 9th Hospital Center, 1st Medical Brigade, pose for a photo, maintaining social distancing, while deployed to New York City to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic, April 2.
Katie Lange
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
It’s not every day you get to be part of a phone call with the president and defense secretary, but in these uncertain times, anything is possible. Army Spc. Samuel Shepard has been learning that quickly. As a medic, the 25-year-old is one of 270 soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas, deployed in New York City, the epicenter of America’s COVID-19 crisis. He and fellow soldiers assigned to the 9th Hospital Center, 1st Medical Brigade, are just some of the troops who arrived in the hard-hit city last week to support the Army Corps of Engineers, police and other first responders on the front lines of the pandemic. Shepard’s unit has pulled some 15-hour days to help build a temporary medical station at the Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center in Manhattan. DOD remains in close coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is the lead federal agency in the response, to determine how the military could support additional requests for assistance. Shepard was scouting potential field hospital sites in case they got such a request when he was told to do something he would never forget: President Donald J. Trump and Defense Secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper were holding a conference call with service members and their families, and he was asked to give an update on his unit’s mission. ‘’Seventy-two hours after we left, we were on ground, helping to build the first 1,000 beds and all the patient care and hygiene systems and the staff care and hygiene systems, which were our top priorities,’’ Shepard told the president. ‘’We are ready and willing to do whatever you ask to win this fight, and we will win. That’s just what we do.’’ Shepard said it was a pretty cool task, despite the pressure of
Courtesy photo knowing about 1,000 people were on the call. ‘’It was a great experience to get to update the president on everything that was going on,’’ he said. ‘’When I was in college, I did an internship with the meteorologist at our local TV station, so I was kind of used to talking in front of people.’’ Shepard joined the Army as a combat medic three years ago after graduating from college. He was recently selected to attend flight school to become a helicopter pilot, but he’s not sure if that will get put on hold as the coronavirus crisis continues. For now, he’s focused on the mission at hand – helping reduce pressure on the New York medical system. While the 15-hour days have slowed down a bit, Shepard knows it’s far from over yet. But he and his unit are prepared for whatever comes their way. ‘’We have all our people here, so we’re able to spread the load,’’ Shepard said. ‘’We’re building our battle rhythm as we go along.’’ More than 186,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed with the virus that has swept the globe. More than 3,600 have died from COVID-19 as of April 1.

fans while playing the highest caliber of baseball. Undoubtedly Robinson’s military training helped equip him to be that man. There were, arguably, better black players at the time. Inarguably there were numerous black players who were athletically qualified to play in the majors. But, Rickey made the call — it would be Robinson who’d integrate the Dodgers.
In 1946 Robinson arrived in Daytona Beach for spring training with the Royals. Things went horribly. The Royals’ manager wanted Robinson shipped to a different Dodger affiliated team. Didn’t matter which one. Just, not his team. Rickey refused the demand. But, Robinson couldn’t stay with his teammates. He instead stayed with Joe and Dufferin Harris, a couple with their own lists of impressive firsts for blacks in Daytona

in two boats. One boat headed toward a northern fortification. The other toward a southern one. They would do a coordinated assault on the forts and set fire to ships. Easy peasy. Jones’ boat reached its assigned fort and made short work of the soldiers there. They “spiked” the cannons, to ensure a safe escape, and realized their fire had gone out. Some of the men went to a nearby house and borrowed a light from there. The courageous fighters made their way to the Thompson, subdued the crew, and set the
ship ablaze. The raiders didn’t wait for the wind to do the trick. They grabbed burning pieces of the Thompson and threw them onto other British ships. Thus the great American victory went. Well, it actually went poorly.
The whole thing fizzled Turned out Jones’ vision of hundreds of burning merchant ships would remain in his imagination. Whitehaveners got word of the raid and rushed to save their ships. They were able to put out the Thompson’s fire, and the others never sparked. The other raiding party — the one that was supposed to capture the other fort and set
Beach and Volusia County. The Dodgers didn’t yet have a spring-training facility in Florida — Dodgerville in Vero Beach came later. That caused problems. Officials in Sanford, Jacksonville and DeLand shut down stadiums rather than have Robinson train or play on those fields. After enough proverbial arm-twisting by Rickey, Daytona Beach agreed to let Robinson play at City Island Ballpark in an exhibition game between the Royals and Dodgers. That game was on March 17, 1946.
One game didn’t end the overt racism Robinson and a growing number of black players faced in baseball and other amateur and professional sports. But Daytona Beach can rightly tout that quietly groundbreaking game played at City Island as a great civil rights moment when Lt. Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson took the field. That baseball field at 105 E. Orange Ave., Daytona Beach, on an island in the Halifax River, is now known as the Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
ships ablaze — its crew found themselves a pub, made a few sailors’ memories, and headed back to the Ranger. It’s probably a wonder they found it in their stupor. In a gallant effort to recover the raid’s losses, Jones headed to nearby Scotland, right across a bay, with an impromptu plan to kidnap the Earl of Selkirk. The earl wasn’t home. Jones took his silverware.
be invaded. That scared the (expletive) of the British and they invested heavily in coastal defenses — military investments of gold and men that didn’t contribute to fighting the Revolutionary War in the colonies. Jones went on to have more celebrated battles and victories in the Revolutionary War. So much so, his name is remembered with fanfare. Still, Jones never lost his knack for annoying people and lost one command after another. In frustration after getting relegated to an insultingly menial job, he joined the Russian navy on April 23, 1787, exactly nine years after the raid on Whitehaven, the one Revolutionary War battle fought on Britain’s homeland.
That fizzle burned bright Jones’ raid on Whitehaven might seem comical, but it was disproportionately effective militarily. Jones proved that the British navy couldn’t be everywhere even along its own coast and England could

Veterans reaching out to statewide support line Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Write this down — 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838). That’s the Florida Veterans Support Line and it’s more important than ever in the COVID-19 world. The statewide number is 211 for veterans from Key West to Pensacola. The calls are answered by veterans. “They have access to different resources pertaining to veterans,” said Ken Gibson, senior director of marketing and public relations at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay runs the Florida Veterans Support Line with grant funding from the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs, the federal veterans department, and others. The operators are, among other things, able to get veterans connected with local veterans for additional help. “We can connect them with a care coordinator in their part of the state who is also a veteran,” Gibson said.
Who’s calling the line since COVID-19 hit?
creased telehealth world — the Department of Veteran Affairs and others moving services out of the medical centers and clinics onto telephonic and other technology platforms. “Some people have a technology gap,” Gibson said. “They may not have the equipment needed to receive (technology-based care).” Others just got the needed tech, and that’s the new strain on their lives. “Some individuals have basically made some purchases in preparation for (telehealth services) and they’re on a fixed income and that has put stressors on normal monthly income,” Gibson explained. “It’s put their budget under stress.”
What does the Florida Veterans Support Line Expect? Gibson said there hasn’t been a noticeable increase in daily call volume to the Florida Veterans Support Line. Everybody at the crisis center expects that to change soon. “The layoffs have happened,” he said. “In some cases, you have a two-income household and both have lost their jobs.”
Another mental-health stressor that’s beginning to show in general that the crisis center expects will crop up among veterans is a feeling that their homes have been invaded by the office. “Some people are working from home now, which is good because they can continue their work and earn an income,” he said. But — “That’s caused a disruption — their sense of sanctuary is disrupted,” continued Gibson. “In some cases, this happened pretty quick, and they were not prepared for it, or necessarily wanted it. They’ve had to make some quick adjustments.” Also, a lot of veterans organizations have for now closed their posts and chapters and proverbially hung signs saying “until further notice.” “Some people are feeling detached from their support system,” said Gibson. “That translates into a loss for that person, even a grieving situation.” Gibson urged veterans to call the Florida Veterans Support Line before stressors become full-blown mental-health crisis. That number again is 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838).

Gibson said that in the first couple weeks of the COVID-19 medical emergency about 30 veterans have specifically cited it as a cause for their calls. One of the biggest needs is surprising. ralphoko@hotmail.com “People that have been getting meal delivery, that’s getting disrupted by the virus,” Gibson said. Most places that offer the free meal deliveries to senior citizens and others © call them “Meals on Wheels.” Gibson said from what the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay andTELEVISION Florida Veterans Support LineSHOWS FOR VETERANS AND RADIOS can figure a lot of the usual drivers have PHONE: 954-557-6226 suspended their volunteerism. ralphoko@hotmail.com “Part of the disruption is because the ralphoko@hotmail.com TELEPHONE: 772 794-0003 people doing the deliveries are older and taking precautions to protect themPHONE: 772 532-8749 selves,” he said. leicalarry@aol.com Other coronavirus related calls have been because of people living in an in-
