Prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick Accessible version: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html
If you are sick with COVID-19 or think you might have COVID-19, follow the steps below to help protect other people in your home and community.
Stay home except to get medical care. • Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and are able to recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas. • Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. • Get medical care when needed. Call your doctor before you go to their office for care. But, if you have trouble breathing or other concerning symptoms, call 911 for immediate help. • Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home. • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available. If you need to be around other people or animals in or outside of the home, wear a cloth face covering. ɞ See COVID-19 and Animals if you have questions about pets: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019ncov/faq.html#COVID19animals
Monitor your symptoms. • Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and cough. Trouble breathing is a more serious symptom that means you should get medical attention. • Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department. Your local health authorities will give instructions on checking your symptoms and reporting information.
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*: • Trouble breathing • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest • New confusion or not able to be woken • Bluish lips or face *This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.
Call 911 if you have a medical emergency. If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the operator that you have or think you might have, COVID-19. If possible, put on a facemask before medical help arrives.
Call ahead before visiting your doctor. • Call ahead. Many medical visits for routine care are being postponed or done by phone or telemedicine. • If you have a medical appointment that cannot be postponed, call your doctor’s office. This will help the office protect themselves and other patients.
If you are sick, wear a cloth covering over your nose and mouth. • You should wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth if you must be around other people or animals, including pets (even at home). • You don’t need to wear the cloth face covering if you are alone. If you can’t put on a cloth face covering (because of trouble breathing for example), cover your coughs and sneezes in some other way. Try to stay at least 6 feet away from other people. This will help protect the people around you. Note: During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical grade facemasks are reserved for healthcare workers and some first responders. You may need to make a cloth face covering using a scarf or bandana.

The Sacking of Lawrence Town was 1st flashpoint leading to ‘Bloody Kansas’ and Civil War Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
It wasn’t really a “sacking” in the sense we usually think of the word — the Visigoths in Rome, for example, or the Mongol Hordes, leveling everything in their path. On this day in history, May 21, 1856, a small skirmish in Kansas Territory ignited the simmering cauldron of the Civil War. The aim at the outset in Lawrence was fairly modest — to destroy the Free State Hotel and the printing presses of the town’s two newspapers, and disarm the anti-slavery citizens by a group of Southern sympathizers. Hardly a “sacking,” but journalists of that day did, and today’s Source: Wikimedia Commons still do, enjoy the most colorful language they could get away with, and the title This photo of “Captain” William Clarke Quantrill was stuck. taken by an unknown photographer shortly before Kansas Territory was in its infancy, Quantrill’s death in 1865 at the age of 28. only having been established in 1854 (and originally encompassing parts of hard place. what are other states today). England states, were opposed to slavery. There was not much they could do except pound on pulpits, though — slavery was the engine that drove the American agricultural juggernaut, especially cotton, which Britain needed to feed its textile mills, and sugarcane, used in a variety of ways (not the least of which was rum for the Navy). The Missouri Compromise of 1820 admitted Maine as a free state, and designated Missouri a slave state, maintaining the balance of power in Congress. In Kansas and Nebraska territories were given the choice of whether to become free or slave. Violence between the two factions began almost immediately.
Bushwhackers vs. jayhawkers The conflict was especially bloody along the Kansas–Missouri border, where Missouri Border Ruffians (“bushwhackers” and Kansas Free-Staters “jayhawkers”) formed bands of partisan rangers to raid and pillage opposition strongholds, earning it the name “Bleeding Kansas.” Only 56 people were killed during the Bleeding Kansas era, which was contained by 1859. This was astonishing, considering that bands on either side of the ideological divide numbered from 20 or so to well in the hundreds, and hundreds of thousands of dollars (millions in 2020) worth of property was destroyed. Kansas’ popular vote eventually chose against slavery, and the territory became

OP-ED State veteran nursing homes faring well in coronapidemic Op-ed column by Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
OK, there’s good news and there’s not-as-bad-as-could-be news that’s so relieving in context we take it as good news. This is the latter. “We have lost, as in passed away, seven residents,” Steve Murray, spokesman for the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs said. The day Murray and I spoke the Florida Department of Health was reporting 808 deaths among residents at long-term care facilities. Of those, less than 1 percent were at state veterans nursing homes. In context, there are just about 700 nursing homes in Florida with around 71,000 residents at any time.
Florida Department of Veteran Affairs The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs, FDVA, which is separate from the federal Department of Veteran Affairs, has on any given day about 800 elderly and infirmed veterans in its care across six nursing homes and an assisted living facility. When the novel coronavirus shoved its way into American life in March, my thoughts turned to those facilities. I feared news that may come out of them. I talked to Murray about the in-construction Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Port St. Lucie. He right away asked me if I wanted a statewide COVID-19 update. “Not really,” I mumbled, knowing full well he was going to give it to me anyhow. “The only one we’ve had issues with over the last couple months has been our skilled nursing facility in Broward,”
Patrick McCallister
criticism. I’ve had to do that in my career to a few people myself. I understand why Murray seemed to be bracing for pointed questions. I’ve seen the stories other news outlets have done about those deaths at Nininger. The reporters, or their line editors, are obviously unfamiliar with veterans’ issues. For example, one headline from a Florida newspaper reads: “7 military veterans at VA nursing home in Broward die of coronavirus.” No, no, no, no, and again no. A state veterans nursing home is not a “VA nursing home.” The VA has nursing homes. It has some in Florida. But, the VA doesn’t run the Nininger state veterans home, so the headline is just factually wrong. Might seem like a small thing, but it illustrates what Murray is up against — reporters who don’t know the difference between the VA and FDVA, so probably don’t know much else about veterans and veterans affairs. Those news outlets haven’t been dealing with the state veterans nursing homes on a regular basis like Veteran Voice. They’re probably not looking at what I am. The state
had about 800 or so frail, elderly patients in its care from Pembroke Pines to St. Augustine to Land O’ Lakes to Panama City when the novel coronavirus hit the state. The opportunity for loss was great. The preventative measures have been successful. “We’ve been working hard to keep COVID-19 out of our facilities,” Murray said. Mission accomplished, sir, mission accomplished.
Takeaway for Veteran Voice readers Many of Veteran Voice’s readers are in the southern end of our coverage area, Martin and St. Lucie counties. I’m not in the television market there, but guess y’all have seen some of the news coming out of the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State Veterans’ Nursing Home. It’s sad. Seven veterans dead of COVID-19 is seven more than anyone thinks acceptable. But in the big picture, Floridians can and should be proud of our state veterans department’s excellent response to the coronavirus.
he said. That’s not a shocker. The health department reported the same day so far close to 100 long-term care patients have died of coronavirus in Broward County, the second most for any county. Miami-Dade beats it with twice as many deaths. The two together represent more than a third of long-term care patients who’ve died of COVID-19 in the state. But in that environment, the state workers at the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State RALPH NATHAN OKO Veterans’ Nursing Home in HOST/PARTNER Pembroke Pines have lost only seven of some of the frailest veterans in Florida. VA partnering with Carry The Load to honor fallen heroes 2020 National Relay shifts to virtual event VAntage Point Blog
DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS
VA’s National Cemetery Administration is partnering again with the non-profit Carry The Load for a Memorial Day campaign. Carry the Load provides active ways for Americans to honor and remember the sacrifices made by our nation’s fallen heroes. This year marks the ninth annual Memorial Day campaign. It is the second year for VA cemeteries joining to help promote Carry The Load’s signature event. The National Relay is a 15,000-mile trek across the country culminating with a Memorial Day ceremony in Dallas, Texas.
First Virtual National Relay This year, the National Relay, with 30 stops in national cemeteries, is a virtual relay. Participants can register for the virtual relay at carrytheload.org/register. By registering, participants can form virtual teams and build community partnerships. National cemeteries and Carry The Load will recognize fallen Veterans by featuring a “Veteran of the Day” on social media.
Memorial Drive, Facebook Live and National Moment of Remembrance Memorial Day typically has a traditional ceremony. This year, Carry The Load will host the 2020 Dallas Memorial Drive from 9 a.m. to noon Central Time May 25. From noon to 3 p.m. central (11 a.m.-2 p.m. EST), Carry The Load has a Facebook Live sharing event, “Lessons from the Front.” Patriots are en-

couraged to pause at 2 p.m. EST for a one-minute “National Moment of Remembrance.” This moment is to honor those who died in service to the nation. Although this year’s events will look different, the mission to honor fallen heroes remains the same. For more details on the 2020 Carry The Load National Relay, visit their website at carrytheload.org. “In this time of uncertainty, our mission and our purpose has not changed,” said Stephen Holley, president and CEO of Carry The Load and Navy SEAL Veteran. “Since 2011, Carry The Load has provided an outlet for financial and emotional support to our nation’s heroes. With our current situation, the entire world has become
painfully aware of the courage and sacrifice of those on the front lines.”
VA’s participation VA National Cemeteries across the nation are partnering with Carry The Load for a virtual relay this Memorial Day to honor the fallen. “The National Cemetery Administration greatly values our close partnership with Carry The Load, and Memorial Day provides an important opportunity to work together to pay tribute to the fallen and their families,” Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Randy Reeves said. “Our organizations’ missions are closely aligned, as we make sure that ‘No Veteran Ever Dies.’ This year’s online Memorial Day event will allow
people to participate without traveling long distances. So, we actually have an opportunity to reach more people in more places than we would otherwise.” VA operates 142 national cemeteries and 33 soldiers’ lots and monument sites in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam. For Veterans not buried in a VA national cemetery, VA provides headstones, markers or medallions to commemorate their service. Information on VA burial benefits is available from local VA national cemetery offices, online at www.va.gov/burials-memorials/, or by calling VA regional offices toll-free at 800-827-1000. ‘We’re getting Americans back in space on American rockets’ NASA’s SpaceX Demo 2 mission will return human spaceflight from U.S. soil with astronauts Col. Robert Behnken and Col. Douglas Hurley on an American rocket and spacecraft for the first time since 2011.
Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Look up in the sky. No, really, look up in the sky on Wednesday, May 27, right around 4:30 p.m. Anyone looking toward Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center will get to see astronauts Col. Robert Behnken and Col. Douglas Hurley heading toward the International Space Station. “We’re getting Americans back in space on American rockets,” said Rep. Bill Posey, whose congressional district includes the center. This will be the first time Americans have piloted an American rocket into space since 2011, the end of the space shuttle program.
The launch Behnken and Hurley will board a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket. If the launch window is good, the ground around Brevard County will rumble as the rocket roars to life on Wednesday. The rocket will leave the ground and shoot past 18,000 mph in a matter of minutes as the rocket, spacecraft and crew tear through the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere into the thermosphere, home to the ISS about 200 to 250 miles above Earth at any time. On Thursday morning, local time, the astronauts will navigate the Crew Dragon closer and closer to the space station as both race at an orbital speed of 17,100 mph. At 11:29 a.m., the spacecraft will dock in the unforgiving microgravity environment. What kind of people are up that task?
The astronauts Behnken is a colonel in the Air Force whose first assignment was at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. He headed to the Air Force Test Pilot School — Edwards Air Force Base, California — where he eventu-

ally served as the lead Flight Test Engineer for the F-22 Raptor. In 2000 Behnken was selected for NASA’s astronaut training. He flew on STS-123 in 2008, then on STS-130 in 2010. Between those flights, he’s logged more than 700 hours in space, 37 doing spacewalks. A fun fact — the SpaceX Demo 2 flight will be Behnken’s first daylight launch. His space shuttle flights were nighttime launches. Hurley retired as a colonel from the Marine Corps. He, too, made the grade for astronaut training in 2000. Hurley did his aviation indoctrination at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, in the late ‘80s then headed to Texas for flight training. He did his F/A-18 Hornet training at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California. Hurley piloted the space shuttle twice. He was on STS127 in 2009. Then he piloted the Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-135, the program’s final flight. In all Hurley’s logged just short of 700 hours in space.
The mission This dynamic space-veteran duo will swell the International Space Station’s population
from three to five for the next several months. Behnken and Hurley will perform various duties and experiments for about three months. Another Crew Dragon is slated to head to space for Crew-1 by the end of summer, if conditions permit. When it goes up, Behnken and Hurley will head home. SpaceX inked a deal with NASA in 2014 to fly six operational missions. The company has also given the upstart Space Force access to its operations for a detailed look at how the company does its launches. Space Force will do its first launch — the AEHF-6, a national security satellite — next March.
Congressmen introduce bill To help keep America competitive for space business, Reps. Charlie Crist and Posey — a Democrat and Republican — recently introduced the American Space Commerce Act. The bill has been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee. If passed by Congress and signed by the president, the bill would allow commercial space ventures to write off equipment and infrastructure investment deprecia-
tion immediately. “We had 100 percent of the world’s commercial launches,” Posey said. But, he said starting in the 1990s as other countries started getting into the orbital launch business, the U.S. has lost a lot of ground. He said unfair space program subsidies in other countries have helped erode America’s edge in space launches. He’s excited the U.S. is doing the inaugural hybrid crewed launch. It’s a chance to reclaim the U.S. lead in space. “This is first major milestone in what people refer to as ‘new space,’” Posey said. “It’s not a complete government program. We have a contractor involved. This brings close the realization that anybody who wants to is going to be able to go into space.”
Watching history in the making NASA is not opening its public viewing areas for the Demo 2 launch, because of social distancing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. NASA TV will start launch coverage on May 27 at 12:15 p.m. It’ll be available online at www. nasa.gov/commercialcrew.

Sirens blared and children clapped as the Kaiserslautern Military Community’s first responders drove through the family housing area at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, during a “Heroes Through Housing” event. Members of the 86th, 569th and 435th Security Forces Squadrons, 86th Medical Group, 435th Civil Engineer Group, NATO Military Police and Army NATO International Military Police were applauded for their work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic during the May 7 event. “It was amazing to see people excited and the young children waving,” Air Force Staff Sgt. Christopher Torres, a police services assistant with the 86th Security Forces Squadron, said. “[Children] were happy to be there, calling their brothers and sisters over to run down the street and get a view.” While first responders usually make contact with the public in a time of crisis, events such as these help build support and ease COVID-19 tension, he said. “The whole purpose was to show the public that the first

responder community is in this together with them,” he said. “We’re still [social] distancing, but we’re also still here to keep the peace and protect the public during COVID-19.” Organizers hoped to boost the morale of the community and give back for their support. “We can’t have a huge fair handing out hot dogs and hamburgers, but it’s just something to show the community, ‘Hey, we’re still thinking about you,’” Montgomery added.
Keeping distancing in focus While events are important for community morale, Air Force Lt. Col. Jeremy Sheppard, the commander of the 86th Security Force Squadron, noted it’s also important to remember that things aren’t back to normal yet. “Our big concern was obviously making so much of a draw in housing that we would inadvertently have a mass gathering,” Sheppard said. “We were happy to see that
families took the precautions to keep themselves and their family members safe.” The event has been in production for two weeks. Sheppard said he saw celebrations for first responders in the United States and wanted to do the same on Ramstein. Frequent communication between first responder agencies was the key getting the event organized quickly, he said. (Air Force Airman 1st Class Taylor Slater is assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing.)

At press time, the Department of Veteran Affairs has confirmed at least about 9,000 cases of COVID-19 among veterans, up by about 1,000 cases in the nine days since Veteran Voice last reported the VA’s numbers. There’ve been at least about 975 known deaths of veterans by COVID-19. The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs, which is separate from the federal VA, reports seven COVID-19 deaths at the Alexander Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines. There have been no other deaths at the other five state veterans nursing homes. The Veterans Health Administration counts about 1,700 cases of the novel coronavirus as “active,” and about 7,350 as “convalescent.” At least 30 VA medical workers — some of whom are also veterans — have also died of COVID-19, including at least one at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. That’s up from 24 in the nine days since Veteran Voice last reported. The department has recently created an online tracker for journalists and interested parties to follow developments of the novel coronavirus among veterans. As of May 4, the VA started including deaths of veterans as reported by non-VA healthcare facili-
ties and other institutions such as John Hopkins University, Center for Systems Science and Engineering. The numbers will increase at least slightly by publication time.
Orlando and West Palm Beach Orlando’s Lake Nona VA Medical Center has had 92 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among its veterans, workers and those fit into a category of “all other.” The center’s catchment area includes three counties in Veteran Voice’s catchment area: Volusia, Seminole and Brevard. The Orlando VAMC has reported no deaths among its staff. Two veterans have died. At press time the Orlando medical center had 16 active cases — 10 veterans and six “all other.” It had 74 convalescent cases. Of those, 61 were veterans and 12 were employees. It had one listed as “all other.” The West Palm Beach VA Medical Center has had 51 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among its veterans and workers. The VA reports no cases among “all other.” The center’s catchment area includes three counties in Veteran Voice’s coverage area: Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin. The West Palm Beach VAMC has reported six deaths. At least one was a worker.

New Air Force test could save millions on tires The ability of an aircraft’s tires to endure a landing at high speeds is critical to an Air Force pilot returning to land following an operational flight. However, predicting aircraft tire wear is a complex, time-intensive phenomenon, highly dependent on multiple variables. At the Air Force Test Center’s Landing Gear Test Facility located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, engineers have developed a new, one-of-a-kind test capability that can identify, characterize and classify tire wear under realistic operational conditions – saving thousands per tire over the life cycle. Missionized Tire Wear Testing, an effort augmented by AFMC Squadron Innovation Funds, leverages specialized lasers and digital scanning technologies with a 168-inch internal drum dynamometer

From militias to regiments — and outlaws Kansas only had a little over 20,000 militiamen — no Army — the bulk of which were dispatched to the war. About 2,000 remained to police the new state. Kansans would go on to distinguish themselves as soldiers in the Union, but in the beginning, it was a daunting job for the boys left at home. Missourians had a formidable weapon in the person of William Clarke Quantrill, a former schoolteacher and Southern sympathizer from Ohio. He would become the leader of a guerrilla army known as Quantrill’s Raiders. Notable members included Jesse James and Cole Younger, who would go on to wreak their own kind of havoc against trains and banks after the war. By war’s end, the Raiders had killed hundreds of people on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri border — including nearly 200 at, yes, Lawrence.

Quantrill, by most accounts an exceptionally cruel man who tortured animals as a child, taught his men that no holds were to be barred. Women and children were fair game, and torture and mutilation were prized qualities. Quantrill was eventually killed by Union troops in 1865 during an ambush — his horse was skittish, which allowed time for a sharpshooter to pick him off. Only 28 years old, he and his Raiders almost alone had kept fighting the war more than a month after the Appomattox surrender.
Perfect storm The provocatively named Free State Hotel in Lawrence was duly razed, as were the printing presses and one house on that May 21. Only one person was killed, a member of the Southern gang who died when a piece of timber from the hotel struck him in the head. No one thought at the time that a punch in the nose like the “sacking” of the town would develop into such a massive conflict — but in hindsight, all the elements were in place. Slave state versus free, the burning desire to settle new and fertile land versus established neighbors angry at the “interlopers” — oil finally met water, and did not mix until many generations later.

And now, a peek inside the old copper box, along with its historic relics, are available virtually, as ANC hosts it’s first-ever online exhibit starting this week (visit www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/ Memorial-Amphitheater-100). “As Arlington National Cemetery remains closed to visitors, the online exhibit will allow the public to explore these hallowed grounds,” said Karen

At press time the West Palm medical center had nine active cases — all veterans. It had 36 convalescent cases. Of those, 33 were veterans and three employees.
Florida and the nation Florida’s six medical centers reported having a combined 354 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among their veterans, workers and “all other.” The VA reported the state had 64 active cases — 53 being veterans. It had 290 convalescent cases. Of those, 243 were veterans, 42 VA employees and five listed as “all other.” There have been 20 reported deaths. At least two were VA workers. At the same time the VA is reporting Florida had 23,419 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 950 deaths. This indicates there’s a large delay in the VA’s reporting, because on the same day the Florida Department of Health, Division of Disease Control and Health Protection

Brands, an American historian, will be available free-of-charge, as a downloadable file. The box was tucked inside a marble cornerstone 105 years ago when construction on the amphitheater began. It was carefully removed April 9, and sorted through by a team of conservators, facilities maintenance staff, and historians at the cemetery. Inside the copper box were blueprints of the amphitheater, a U.S. coin and postage stamp circulating in 1915, an autographed photo of President Woodrow Wilson, a map of Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s design for Washington, D.C., a U.S. flag, and copies of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and a Bible.
is reporting 43,210 cases in Florida — about 1,200 being non-residents — with 7,749 hospitalizations and 1,875 deaths. On the same day, the state’s health department is reporting about 1.4 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus nationally and almost 86,000 deaths. There are about 331 million Americans — about 20 million veterans among them. About 9 million veterans are enrolled in the VA’s healthcare system with around 6 million getting some services at VA medical centers annually. The state has about 22 million residents and 1.5 million veterans, a third of whom are Vietnam-era, which is an age group particularly vulnerable to debilitating and potentially fatal complications due to COVID-19.
Other VA facilities The Bay Pines VA medical center has had 38 cumulative cases of COVID-19 with two deaths. Gainesville has had 39 cases and one death. The Miami VA medical center has had the most cases of the six in the state: 126 cases and six deaths. Tampa — 28 with three deaths.
