Prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick Accessible version: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html
If you are sick with COVID-19 or think you might have COVID-19, follow the steps below to help protect other people in your home and community.
Stay home except to get medical care. • Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and are able to recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas. • Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. • Get medical care when needed. Call your doctor before you go to their office for care. But, if you have trouble breathing or other concerning symptoms, call 911 for immediate help. • Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home. • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available. If you need to be around other people or animals in or outside of the home, wear a cloth face covering. ɞ See COVID-19 and Animals if you have questions about pets: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019ncov/faq.html#COVID19animals
Monitor your symptoms. • Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and cough. Trouble breathing is a more serious symptom that means you should get medical attention. • Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department. Your local health authorities will give instructions on checking your symptoms and reporting information.
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*: • Trouble breathing • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest • New confusion or not able to be woken • Bluish lips or face *This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.
Call 911 if you have a medical emergency. If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the operator that you have or think you might have, COVID-19. If possible, put on a facemask before medical help arrives.
Call ahead before visiting your doctor. • Call ahead. Many medical visits for routine care are being postponed or done by phone or telemedicine. • If you have a medical appointment that cannot be postponed, call your doctor’s office. This will help the office protect themselves and other patients.
If you are sick, wear a cloth covering over your nose and mouth. • You should wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth if you must be around other people or animals, including pets (even at home). • You don’t need to wear the cloth face covering if you are alone. If you can’t put on a cloth face covering (because of trouble breathing for example), cover your coughs and sneezes in some other way. Try to stay at least 6 feet away from other people. This will help protect the people around you. Note: During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical grade facemasks are reserved for healthcare workers and some first responders. You may need to make a cloth face covering using a scarf or bandana.

Uber donation to help vets get to medical appointments Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
There are donations, and then there are Uber donations. This one is uber cool. “One of the things we found this year, especially with (COVID-19), is there are a great many transportation-challenged veterans,” said Lew Wilson, president of the Florida Veterans Foundation. “We called Uber to see if they could provide us some free rides for those veterans. Uber stepped forward and said, ‘Yes, we’ll do that.’”
Veterans Ride Program The upstart Veterans Ride Program — which started with an allocation of 1,000 trips — is a joint venture between the Sunshine Healthcare Network, which includes both Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers in the Veteran Voice coverage area, Uber and the foundation. “It’s for our veterans to get to and from their medical appointments,” said Wilson. The Sunshine Healthcare Network is the VA’s Veterans Integrated Service Network 8. It covers most of Florida, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and part of southern Georgia. In the Veteran Voice coverage area that includes the West Palm Beach and Lake Nona VA medical centers. The rides are for up to $25. The participating veterans are responsible for charges exceeding that amount. Additionally, part of ride-share drivers’ income is gratuities, which veterans should, but aren’t obliged to, account for. Uber also has so-called “flex pricing.” The same ride can cost different amounts
based in part on how busy a requested timeslot is. As the company explains on its website, “When there are more riders than available drivers, prices may temporarily increase until the marketplace is rebalanced.” Additionally, there are different prices depending on whether a rider needs additional room for, say, a piece of medical equipment. UberXL provides additional space over UberX. While using Uber is different in some respects to getting a traditional taxi, it’s generally the same. Due to risks of spreading the novel coronavirus Uber is requiring drivers and riders to wear face coverings. Drivers have the option to refuse customers who don’t wear masks. Riders who repeatedly refuse to wear masks may have their access to rides terminated. Additionally, the company is asking riders to not use the service if they’re feeling like they may have COVID-19. Uber is asking customers to wash their hands before and after rides, to sit in the back seats, and to open windows for ventilation.
How veterans can use the program Wilson said to get the free Uber rides to medical appointments veterans need to call their medical centers’ Social Work Services. The VA social workers make determinations and give the veterans Uber codes for the rides. He said it would be up to individual centers how to use the Veterans Ride Program in conjunction with the Veterans Choice program. Most counties have free bus services to and from their VA medical centers, which veterans can access by calling their coun-
ties’ veteran services. But those services are generally not available for appointments at community-based outpatient clinics and other satellite facilities. At press time the foundation is setting up a website with additional information. It’ll be www.veteransridefree.com. The foundation has a website at www.helpflvets.org.
Florida Veterans Foundation The Florida Legislature created the foundation during the 2008 legislative session. It’s a not-for-profit created to assist the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs. Before creation of the foundation, the state’s veterans department got calls from veterans needing help. It couldn’t offer much more than referrals and sympathy. The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, FDVA, operates the state’s six current veteran nursing homes, along with an adult living facility. It also has workers to help with filing claims and making appeals to the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. What the state veterans department couldn’t and doesn’t do was help veterans with crises such as facing eviction. When the legislature created the foundation, it did so with faith in Floridians to help and has never appropriated any money to it. That has, unfortunately, always been a challenge for the foundation for various reasons. Monetary donations haven’t met the legislature’s expectations. Wilson said the foundation’s credibility helps it approach companies such as Uber and others for various kinds of donations, including 1,000 rides for veterans.

The mighty 54th Black regiment kicked it in Civil War, changing American history Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
President Abraham Lincoln was not too keen on allowing black Americans to fight in the Civil War. He may or may not have been racist, though most of his countrymen were. It was more a question of politics. In 1863, on Jan. 1, the dawn of the new year, Lincoln was quite aware that his possible re-election was looming. If he chose wrongly on the black troop question, he risked everything, and he knew it. He worried that loyal border states would withdraw their support for the Union. Still, he signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which, besides declaring slaves free, allowed for former slaves to serve in the Union Army. Famous abolitionist, former slave, civil rights pioneer, writer and orator Frederick Douglass was quoted as saying: “Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letters, U.S.; let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder and bullets in his pocket, and there is
no power on earth which can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship.” Douglass put his money where his mouth was. Two of his sons went on to fight in the war, and a third became a troop recruiter.
African Americans join the fight Black Americans were already in place to jump into the war. According to history.com: “The Second Confiscation and Militia Act of July 17, 1862, was the first step toward the enlistment of African Americans in the Union Army. It did not explicitly invite blacks to join the fight, but it did authorize the president ‘to employ as many persons of African descent as he may deem necessary and proper for the suppression of this rebellion… in such manner as he may judge best for the public welfare.’” By the time the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Colored Regiment deployed on this day in history, May 28, 1863, at Fort Wagner, S.C., it was clear that slavery’s end had come.

Rocky start Massachusetts was populated by abolitionists, so it was a natural state to form a black unit. In those early days, white officers led them. Ninety percent of all officers in the United States Colored
Troops (USCT) were white. Col. Robert Gould Shaw, an idealistic son of an abolitionist family, headed the 54th. Shaw was a veteran of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry and saw action in the 1862 Shenan-

VETERANS’ ART IN THE CORONAVIRUS WORLD:
Teaching interrupted
Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Editor’s note: Veteran Voice is doing this limited series, “Veterans’ Art in the Coronavirus World,” with help from the online South Florida arts publication The Rickie Report. Warriors have given the world some of its most compelling art about our shared experiences. World War I era British army officer Paul Nash’s surreal “Spring in the Trenches” tells 100 stories in one image. Art writer Rickie Leiter kindly asked her readers if a military veteran who makes all or part of her or his living would talk to Veteran Voice for a story. Almost 10 came forward to tell us their stories about being artists as the world, nation and state are going through the COVID-19 crisis. Veteran Voice will talk to all of them and publish the stories in coming weeks. The Rickie Report is at www.therickiereport.com. Subscriptions to its e-letter are free and a good way to keep up when the art shows and galleries are opened again. There’s a whole side to arts we never see in galleries, museums, or outdoor shows, but we wouldn’t have any of those without it. Teaching. When Veteran Voice went looking for artists whose occupations or avocations were interrupted by COVID-19’s new social-distancing realities, we never thought about arts instruction. This week, two veterans who are in the arts brought up how the novel coronavirus has affected the instructional side of their practices. Veteran Voice did notice a subtle similarity in their stories. Neither of these two artists got encouragement when they expressed interest in their arts. Both turned to teaching and encouraging others after successful arts careers. Both miss teaching.

got his start onboard the USS Enterprise. He’s proud of that. “It was decades ago aboard the USS Enterprise when I picked up my first camera & shot that 1st photo,” he says on his Facebook banner. There’s a funny story about how he got into selling photographs. His first photo sell was of an exotic dancer bending over to pick up cash she dropped, and a dozen or so men reaching for her derriere. He took that opportunity photo on a camera he won on a bet. “In a card game,” Jawitz said. “It was a cheapo Carl Zeiss.”
“That was what got me into (photography) — a gamble.” When Jawitz started his photography, he had no instruction. A quirky accident got him put on light duty, so he spent a lot of his days taking pictures on the Enterprise until he was finally discharged from service. He headed back to New York, thought about what he wanted to do with his life and settled on photography. He decided to use education benefits on photography school. By the way, Jawitz has no patience for people deriding government-backed educational
programs. But when he talked to someone behind a government desk about using his education benefits for studying photography, he didn’t get encouragement. “‘It’s a dead industry,’” Jawitz said the man told him. “That was his exact words.” It’d be the first of many times over five decades Jawitz heard how photography was dying as he kept doing well at it. He scraped together $100 he needed to cover his share of the photo school costs. “That $100 got me over 50 years in an industry that theoretically should have been dead in 1965 according to the government,” said Jawitz. He made his mark in New York and moved back and forth to Port St. Lucie since 2015. Jawitz has been doing some shows, but really, the big thing for him now is teaching classes. Indeed, he had classes lined up for the Catskill Mountains area this summer. Then COVID-19 showed up and kicked all that into oblivion. “It’s a strange time for me,” Jawitz said. “I’m winding down my career.” But a friend turned Jawitz on to Zoom Video Communications, which has gotten a lot of press and use since the novel coronavirus forced governments, businesses, organizations and individuals to practice a new normal — social distancing. “He’s teaching classes on Zoom,” Jawitz said. “I’m going to start looking into that.” He added, “I will get back to business.” In the meantime, Jawitz is displaying his work at www. facebook.com/Lou.jawitz.

GOLD STAR DREAMS
Army widow, mother of 7, seeks to tangibly honor fallen husband’s memory, vision Jim Garamone
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
Each year on Memorial Day, Americans have struggled with how best to honor those who have given the last full measure of devotion to their nation. Perhaps the best way to do that is to honor the dreams those people had, Jennie Taylor, a Gold Star wife, said during an interview from her home in North Ogden, Utah. Taylor is the widow of Army Maj. Brent Taylor, who was killed in Afghanistan by a member of the Afghan security forces in 2018. The National Guard officer was on his fourth year-long tour when he was cut down. Jennie is raising seven children, ages 2 through 14, complicated now by quarantine. “I’m only half-joking when I say I’m one small step away
from really crazy,” she said. From changing diapers to schlepping the older kids around, Taylor’s life is full of events, but she still finds time to honor the dreams her husband had.
‘Hizzoner’ answers call to duty Brent Taylor was the mayor of North Ogden when he was called up for deployment. Many people told him that he had done enough, and that he should decline the orders. That was not in line with his beliefs, Jennie said. Each time he left for deployment or extended Guard training “it was gut-wrenching” to the family, she added, but “he wasn’t comfortable just staying home and taking it for granted.” To let those dreams just fall by the wayside felt crushing
and ... just not an acceptable option.”
Fundraiser lands in lap After his death, Jennie read the major’s journal. One entry as he was flying to Afghanistan for his first deployment encapsulates his drive. “It’s a one-page handwritten entry,” she said. “He says, ‘I cannot stay if my country is at war. I am honor-bound to serve.’ And then he says ‘I would go even if I knew I would die.’” From that came the idea for the Major Brent Taylor Foundation. “Some of his professors and fellow students at the University of Utah had started a scholarship fund,” Jennie said. “He was a Ph.D. candidate. And he had done pretty much everything except his dissertation and final exams. So I went and met with the
university after someone else had begun the funds. And by the time the conversation ended, I had committed to giving the university $100,000. Then I drove away from university and thought, ‘What in the world have I done?’”
Friends help dig in While the major had studied at the University of Utah, he and Jennie met when they were both students at Brigham Young University, so she contacted that college. “The next thing you know, I’m on the phone with Brigham Young University committing to a scholarship there. [The] endowment amount they wanted was $60,000,” she said. “By the end of that day, I’d committed $160,000,

‘Herdenking op Amerikaans ereveld Margraten’ ‘Memorial at the American Field of Honor Margraten’ Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
The 75th Memorial Day since World War II might have passed too quietly for us, thanks to COVID-19, but not for the Dutch. Despite social distancing. His Royal Highness King Willem Alexander reverently stood at the American Field of Honor Margraten as taps — our honor for war dead — sounded. He stood reverently as the Dutch air force flew the Missing Man Formation overhead to honor the nearly 8,300 American service members laid to rest there. He stood silently among the graves intently listening as someone told him the story of two who died in World War II — two Americans laid to rest at the Amerikaanse Begraafplaats Margraten. The two soldiers were brothers in law. Their families requested they be laid side by side in the Netherlands, a country we helped liberate from Nazi Germany in World War II. I know this, because it was all on Nederlandse Omroep Stichting, their national television, live, then rebroadcasted and — according to a Dutch friend of mine — covered on their nightly news. The Dutch rightly acknowledged our Memorial Day as they do every year to thank America for our sacrifices made to help liberate it in 1945. The Dutch mark their Liberation Day on May 5 annually, too.
“Herdenking op Amerikaans ereveld Margraten” I mentioned our Memorial Day to a Dutch friend and how sad I was it’d be largely quiet this year, because of the pandemic. She said there was going to be a program about our Memorial Day on the Netherlands’ national television. She sent me the link to the NOS’s YouTube channel archive of it, too. The English translation of the program, she was kind enough to give me, is “Memorial at the American Field of

Honor Margraten.” Before the memorial service attended by King Willem Alexander, the national broadcaster NOS talked — in a language I couldn’t understand, but the tones made that unnecessary — about the importance of the American Battle Monuments Commission’s cemetery and memorial at Margraten, Netherlands. Every single grave, I learned, is adopted by a Dutch family. Those families care for the graves for generations, and, at least in many cases, stay in touch with the American families of the fallen soldiers. In a prerecorded segment of “Herdenking op Amerikaans ereveld Margraten,” Dutch citizen Hans Schillings walked solemnly through the cemetery to the grave of Texan Jose Medrano. We learn through the narrative that Schillings family adopted Medrano’s grave long ago. He grew up visiting and caring for the grave with his parents. Schillings talked,
by video chat, with Medrano’s sister, Octavia Alvarez. She recounted the day news of his death came. “And we saw this fella on a bicycle, and so we opened the telegram,” she tells Schillings. “I still can hear my mother shouting. ‘Jose, Jose, they killed Pepe, they’ve killed Pepe’ in Spanish,” she said. After translating her mother’s cry of grief into Spanish, Alvarez added, “It was very heartbreaking, you know.” The Dutch man is visibly moved hearing about Medrano’s family’s worst day. “Thank you for sharing that story with us,” he tells Alvarez. “I didn’t know the reaction when the telegram arrived.”
American visits his friend In another prerecorded segment, World War II veteran Dick Klein visits his friend, Jacob Wingard. An obvious member of the Dutch military
escorts Klein into the Amerikaanse Begraafplaats Margraten to his friend’s final resting place. Klein talked about his friend as a man everybody liked — Wingard was just one of those likable guys. He was killed on Sept. 18, 1944. Klein recalled the moment his friend was shot in the chest. “That’s the last word’s he said. ‘I’m dead, I’m dead,’” Klein tells the NOS film crew, and thus the Dutch people. “I caught him and laid him on the floor and that was the end.”
Americans and Dutch gather to honor our dead The Memorial Day Service followed a familiar flow to Americans. Notable speakers including Gen. Tod Wolters, U.S. European Command and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, emphasizing the

which I didn’t have.” Jennie and many friends chipped in and began fundraising. The BYU endowment has been met. They are still $25,000 short at the University of Utah. “There are a lot of people inspired by the legacy this man left behind,” she said. “There’s a lot of dreams and goals this man had that most of us were pretty confident he would realize. He had that kind of work ethic and dedication.” “To let those dreams just fall by the wayside felt crushing and kind of like just not an acceptable option,” she said. “The scholarships are a start — they form a base on which to build,” she said. “I know it’s not Brent’s legacy. Brent did not invent patriotism. Brent did not invent service-oriented leadership,” she added. “He was mayor of our city when he was killed. And he stood on the shoulders of giants that I
know for a fact inspired him.”
Army secretary gets new aide Jennie was appointed as a civilian aide to Army Secretary Ryan D. McCarthy in January. She will be looking at the casualty notification process and is also participating in the survivor advisory working group. She also wants to do her part to bring the U.S. military and the greater American public together. This is her dream, she said, and each death can shatter the dreams. “There are a million dreams — mothers and fathers who had dreams for their son or daughter, wives and husbands who had shared dreams, sons and daughters who had dreams with their fathers or mothers, friends, relatives and more,” Jennie said. “That’s really how I felt and still feel today. I know … there’s new dreams ahead, and I’m grateful for all I have, but I will tell you, there are a million dreams.”

VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA CHAPTER 566
I’d like to share a bit about a project that I’ve been working on, starting with my spending time on the website Find a Grave: https://www.findagrave.com/ My personal profile page is found here: https://www.findagrave.com/user/profile I have been doing data entry into the website for many years. Going to visit a cemetery, taking photos and documenting the information on the gravestone and looking to see if that person has a memorial created on the ceme-
tery’s Find A Grave page. If there is no listing, then I create one for the person interred, using the information listed on the gravestone. When I do find a listing, I try to check it for accuracy, comparing information on the stone to the information on the memorial page. If the memorial has no photo, I add the one that I took. If there is no information as in a biography, I attempt to learn something about that person via an obituary that can sometimes be located at https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/tcpalm/. One thing I have learned while
doing this is that many times gravestones can get buried under leaves, dirt, debris or whatever man and nature provides. This tends to happen primarily with those stones that are laid flat in the ground, and a very high percentage of these include veterans’ plaques. I have found so many that have perhaps just a corner peeking out from under debris. When I find one of these, it’s time to go to work. The photos I am sharing show an example of one of the many “lost” veteran grave plaques. The first is before cleaning, and the second one is after it. The third
photo shows a plaque.
Gravesite plaques Another issue is when a veteran has both a regular gravestone and a separate Veteran’s Plaque. In this case, the stone was fine, but upon walking around I noticed that there was his plaque, at the base of his gravesite, where many plaques are placed, but this one was buried. Had I not been looking, no one would have known that this

wanted to be when he grew up. “I said, ‘I want to be an artist,’” Forster said. “He told me I couldn’t, because I wasn’t staying in the lines.” Forster came of age in the late 1960s and knew he could volunteer for the service, or likely get drafted. “I enlisted in the Navy to avoid the Marine Corps and Army,” he said. “I’ve got these blue eyes and it doesn’t go with the green uniform.” Forster got into electronics and retired in 2007. “I devoted myself after that to working full-time as an artist,” he said. He’s entered shows, and walked away with prizes pretty much every time. That’s not what Forster seemed interested in talking about. “I teach,” he said. “That came to an end with the

person was, in fact a veteran and would not have been recognized as such when events such as the placing of Memorial Day flags, or in the winter when they place the wreaths for Wreaths Across America. Or merely the act of speaking the veteran’s name so that he will never be forgotten, as so many of our veterans have been. I’ve been known to have some very nice chats with the veterans there as I work. All that is involved in finding our Veterans is walking in a cemetery. Any cemetery where veterans may be buried. We have many cemeteries here on the Treasure Coast that have veterans interred. And, many more than one might think, have gravestones and/or plaques that are nearly, or forever lost.
You can join in and help Anyone can work on this project. Bring a bucket with some basic brushes (nothing harsher than what you would use on your car), perhaps a couple of garden tools, and some very mild dilut-
coronavirus.” There are a couple places in Stuart where Forster used to teach painting. Like all great masters, he’s got a following who show up at classes wherever he teaches. “I’ve got seven students who are pretty dedicated,” he said. “We stay in touch (during the COVID-19 pandemic). I’m still teaching them a little bit, but not as intense as it had been.” Because now he’s looking at photos of creations. Not the same as looking at a painting in person. Forster is also displaying his work on Facebook. His page is www.facebook.com/ tom.forster.7798. He does think the world might be in for a creative treat after museums, galleries and art shows reopen. “All those that are painting, drawing or creating things, they’re putting a lot of time into creating,” he said. But, he later added, “This thing could go on for years and years. We’re all taking guesses when it might end.”
ed biodegradable detergent, like Simple Green all-purpose cleaner with lots of water to remove dirt and grime, and thoroughly rinse any detergent from the stone. One of those one- or two-gallon garden sprayers with clean water is great for that. If you are going to a cemetery, pack lots of water. It’s hot out there, and you will need to stay hydrated. The water available at most cemeteries is not potable. Be sure you have your charged cell phone with you, and let someone know where you will be going. Accidents have been known to happen. A trip and fall can happen easily. Always check in with whomever the cemetery caretaker is. Some are amenable to cleaning the stones, others are not. Photography for Find a Grave purposes is a great reason to be out there, recording history. In this time of social distancing, this is a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air, get a bit of exercise, and chat with our veterans. I’m thinking that they appreciate having someone stop by and say “Hello.” (The Michael Bradley Chapter 566 of the Vietnam Veterans of America is based in Port St. Lucie.)

U.S., Peru expand space data-sharing partnership U.S. Space Command took another step in expanding its international space data sharing network; this time with the nation of Peru. Maj. Gen. Javier Tuesta Marquez, National Commission on Aerospace Research and Development (CONIDA), Republic of Peru, and Rear Adm. Marcus A. Hitchcock, USSPACECOM Director of Strategy, Plans and Policy, co-signed the Memorandum of Understanding
between the two entities. CONIDA is the lead agency for all space activities for the nation of Peru and the headquarters of the Peruvian Space Agency. Founded in 1974, the commission is now housed under the Peruvian Ministry of Defense. “With this agreement Peru seeks to strengthen its space capabilities and contribute to global space safety,” Tuesta Marquez said.

doah Valley and Antietam campaigns. After being selected by Massachusetts Gov. John Andrew to organize and lead the 54th, Shaw carefully selected the most physically fit soldiers and white officers with established antislavery views. Tragedy ensued. On July 18, 1863, the 54th stormed Fort Wagner, which guarded the Port of Charleston, S.C. It was the first time in the Civil War that black troops led an infantry attack. Unfortunately, the 600 men of the 54th were outgunned and outnumbered — 1,700 Confederate soldiers had waited inside the fort, ready for battle. Almost half of the charging Union soldiers, including Col. Shaw, were killed. But the story was not yet completely told.
Going down in history According to Wikipedia.com (sources verified): “Although Union forces were not able to take and hold the fort (despite taking a portion of the ramparts in the initial assault), the 54th was widely acclaimed for its valor during the battle, and the event helped encourage the further enlistment and mobilization of African-American troops, a key development that President Abraham Lincoln noted as helping to secure the final victory. “Decades later, Sergeant William Harvey Carney was awarded the Medal of Honor for grabbing the U.S. flag as the

The user’s smartphone can provide Global Positioning System information, potentially up to 20-nautical miles offshore if a mariner has recently or actively connected to a cellular tower. No application download is needed. The Coast Guard can send a text message to the mariner’s cell phone requesting permission to access the GPS location information; all the mariner needs to do is enable location information in their smartphone settings and click the link provided in the text message. You can stop sharing your location at any time, although it is recommended to do so only after being safe and not in distress.

Since the Civil War, everyone knows that the contributions of Americans of all descriptions have been part of every victory — in fact, there would be no victory without them. Black Americans did not have it easy during the Civil War, to make an understatement. It is a shameful episode in our history, worth exploring. Our country’s long march toward true color-blindness is continuing. But the fact remains — black Americans burned to defend their country just the same as everyone else — the more so because they saw their lives being spent securing a better future for their children. Same as all of us. Something most people are not aware of is that African American soldiers — the Buffalo Soldiers — went on, after the Civil War, to help quell the Indian massacres of settlers of the West. They were renowned as horsemen and trackers, developing a unique understanding of their quarry. They also became civil engineers, mapping and grading routes to the West still used to this day. So skilled were they in horsemanship, the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., hired none but Buffalo Soldiers to train their cadets until the end of official horse cavalry in 1945. African Americans are not so much African as Americans. Love of country has no color. Time we all recognized that.

importance of remembering those who lost their lives to preserve human dignity, freedom and democracy. Pete Hoekstra, the Dutch American serving as our ambassador to the Netherlands, was one of the speakers. “Thank you,” he told the Dutch on their national television. “Thank you for being here. It means so much to us as Americans that you would honor us with your presence here today to remember our countryman.”
He added that the Dutch are lovingly there to care for our fallen service members interred in their country when there are no television cameras, no dignitaries to make speeches. “Though adopting these graves, these final resting places, (the American war dead) will always be loved,” Hoekstra said. Anna “Ank” Bijleveld, the Dutch minister of defense, made clear her remarks were not just for those present, but for her country’s posterity. In English she addressed her words to “the boys and girls at home” watching the service on television, because the Netherlands is having to social distance just like we are. She
lamented that American and Allied World War II veterans couldn’t risk travel on this important anniversary with the novel coronavirus afoot. “We would rather be together celebrating with our liberators,” she said. Bijleveld added, “We see them as our own brothers, sisters, sons and daughters.” And — “We will never forget these American men and women. The silence they leave behind speaks volumes.” Memorial Day passed without proper remembrances? Nah, it didn’t. The Dutch saw to it Memorial Day was done right. Memorial Day was on Monday, May 25.
