Prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick Accessible version: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html

If you are sick with COVID-19 or think you might have COVID-19, follow the steps below to help protect other people in your home and community.

Stay home except to get medical care. • Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and are able to recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas. • Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. • Get medical care when needed. Call your doctor before you go to their office for care. But, if you have trouble breathing or other concerning symptoms, call 911 for immediate help. • Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.

Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home. • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available. If you need to be around other people or animals in or outside of the home, wear a cloth face covering. ɞ See COVID-19 and Animals if you have questions about pets: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019ncov/faq.html#COVID19animals

Monitor your symptoms. • Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and cough. Trouble breathing is a more serious symptom that means you should get medical attention. • Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department. Your local health authorities will give instructions on checking your symptoms and reporting information.

If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*: • Trouble breathing • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest • New confusion or not able to be woken • Bluish lips or face *This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.

Call 911 if you have a medical emergency. If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the operator that you have or think you might have, COVID-19. If possible, put on a facemask before medical help arrives.

Call ahead before visiting your doctor. • Call ahead. Many medical visits for routine care are being postponed or done by phone or telemedicine. • If you have a medical appointment that cannot be postponed, call your doctor’s office. This will help the office protect themselves and other patients.

If you are sick, wear a cloth covering over your nose and mouth. • You should wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth if you must be around other people or animals, including pets (even at home). • You don’t need to wear the cloth face covering if you are alone. If you can’t put on a cloth face covering (because of trouble breathing for example), cover your coughs and sneezes in some other way. Try to stay at least 6 feet away from other people. This will help protect the people around you. Note: During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical grade facemasks are reserved for healthcare workers and some first responders. You may need to make a cloth face covering using a scarf or bandana.

Florida gives up the fight daughter, Mary, by the way, married into the Brevard family, the namesakes for Brevard County.

“The department considers it necessary that at least two moderate sized guns he placed at New Smyrna, to protect the landing in the event of our steamers being chased by the enemy’s gunboats. . . . The cargoes of the steamers are so valuable and vitally important, that no precaution should be omitted.” General Robert E. Lee, Jan. 1862. Everything changed for Florida in May, 1865. The American Civil War had raged for about four years, but it was clearly ending with Union victory and what consequences would come with that. The war effectively ended when Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his about 28,000 troops on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. But the shooting didn’t end entirely. There were hangers-on. Florida was among them. It was the penultimate state to give up the fight. Only Texas held out longer. A lot of the state’s soldiers were part of Lee’s surrender. In the shuffle of war before then, the bulk of Floridians in gray ended up serving under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. He

surrendered in Durham, N.C., on April 26, 1865. Florida officially gave up the secession fight on May 13, 1865. That Thursday, federal troops rolled into Tallahassee. Lt. Col. George Washington Scott met them and surrendered the handful of Confederate soldiers left in Florida to the Union’s Gen. Edward McCook. By then an estimated 5,000 Floridians died in the Civil War. Most for the Confederacy, but about 10 to 15 percent of Floridians who were in the

war went to the Union. An unknown number of young men avoided service at all by various means including hiding out in woodlands, marshlands and other inaccessible places.

Yeah, Florida was in the Civil War It’s almost easy to forget that Florida was a part of the Civil War. There was no Gettysburg in the Sunshine State. No Sherman’s March to the Sea. Nevertheless, Florida and the Indian River Lagoon from modern-day Martin to Volusia counties were important to the Confederacy and played a larger part of the Civil War than it might seem. Florida was one of the first three states to secede from the Union. Right after the 1860 presidential election, before the inauguration of winner Abraham Lincoln, Gov. Madison Perry called for the “Convention of the People of Florida” to discuss secession. Delegates met in January of 1861. On Jan. 10 they voted 62-7 for immediate secession. Reportedly the most passionate opponent to immediate secession was Indian Wars veteran Richard Call. He wasn’t opposed to secession so much as he favored finding a way to do it without starting a war he rightly foresaw killing thousands of Florida boys. His

Florida was, most likely, the least populated state in the Confederacy. When the state was admitted into the Confederacy — April of 1861 — there were only about 155,000 people living here. More than 60,000 were slaves. About 14,000 served in support of the Confederate military operations. Gov. John Milton, who took office in 1861 after secession, repeatedly complained to others in the Confederacy that the state had no more young men to spare for military service — those that remained in the state were critical for agriculture. Mostly Florida supplied the Confederacy with food, salt and smuggled military goods. Even with a Union naval blockade around the state, Florida was pretty hard to seal off from the sort of international trade usually done at night. The Indian River was important to those acquisition and supply operations. Gen. Robert E. Lee specifically mentioned it in orders to secure New Smyrna. “The cargoes of the steamers are so valuable and vitally important, that no precaution should be omitted,” he wrote. There was a wharf — old even in the 1860s — in New Smyrna. That wharf was important to the Confederacy since port cities such as Jacksonville were effectively shut down or captured by the Union Navy and Marine Corps.

The Confederate victory at New Smyrna New Smyrna also had the Sheldon family, which owned and operated a large boarding house. That hotel was, by all accounts, comfortable accommodations for Confederate troops, sailors and workers running the wharf.

VETERANS’ ART IN THE CORONAVIRUS WORLD:

“Lock Down 20/20”

Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Editor’s note: Veteran Voice is doing this limited series, “Veterans’ Art in the Coronavirus World,” with help from the online South Florida arts publication The Rickie Report. Warriors have given the world some of its most compelling art about our shared experiences. World War I era British army officer Paul Nash’s surreal “Spring in the Trenches” tells 100 stories in one image. Art writer Rickie Leiter kindly asked her readers if a military veteran who makes all or part of her or his living would talk to Veteran Voice for a story. Almost 10 came forward to tell us their stories about being artists as the world, nation and state are going through the COVID-19 crisis. Veteran Voice will talk to all of them and publish the stories in coming weeks. The Rickie Report is at www. therickiereport.com. Subscriptions to its e-letter are free and a good way to keep up when the art shows and galleries are opened again. Fort Pierce Navy veteran Charles Blake takes daily walks to keep the muscles working and blood pumping. He was passing by the beach the other day and saw something darkly inspiring — orange plastic fencing and signs covered a beach entrance to keep people from going onto it. Of course, everybody knows the beach closure he saw had to do with COVID-19. Blake pulled out his phone, took a picture, and didn’t post it on social media. Nah. He’s an artist. “I just finished a painting based on the coronavirus,” Blake said. When he saw the temporary fencing and signs along with garbage cans strategically placed to keep people off the beach — “I said, ‘Whoa, that’s a painting,’” Blake explained. He continued, “I show the garbage can. What do you think is going into the garbage can? Corona beers.” Back to Blake in a moment.

“Last year was a big year for me,” Markowitz said. “I did four commissions through the summer. It was the biggest year for me.” He sells hand-done original paintings of his existing paintings. He calls them “giclée,” although that is a term commonly used to describe inkjet reproductions of paintings. HOST/PARTNER “I don’t sell original art,” explained Markowitz. “I don’t sell my original art because I’m so emotionally connected to it.”

When people want to buy his paintings, Markowitz recreates them by hand. That way what the patrons get are original, too. “Basically because you can never recreate an original that’s identical,” he said. Markowitz added, “You’re seeing the image in front of you that you created on a blank canvass, and your mind sees things it didn’t originally consider. You

GROUND CONTROL TO CAPT. TOM British WWII vet, 100, smashes fundraising records for National Health Service, teaching lessons to us all Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Sometimes, in times of great trouble, an otherwise ordinary person steps out quietly with a small goal and ends up rocking the world. Such a person is British World War II veteran Capt. Tom Moore, a Yorkshireman, who turned 100 April 30. His goal? Beginning April 6, he vowed to raise 1,000 pounds ($1,250 in dollars at the current exchange rate) for the British National Health Service’s fight against the coronavirus. He would do this by taking laps around his garden (yard) with the help of his walker and cane. He wanted to complete 100 laps by his birthday. In less than a week, the 1,000 pounds was raised, and the goal increased to 5,000 pounds. Then 500,000, as the donations began to pour in. By the 16th, the laps were finished, and 13 million pounds had been raised through social media. Then the quest hit the mainstream media. The final tally? More than 32 million pounds by the time he turned 100. Numerous awards and recognition. An Army guard of honor saluting him as he crossed the finish line. A personal letter from the Queen, and a rank promotion. More than 150,000 cards from around the world. Capt. Tom was officially a celebrity.

Wartime service Moore enlisted in the 8th Battalion, Duke of Wellington Regiment, an infantry unit, at the beginning of the war, stationed in Cornwall. He was selected for officer training in 1940, and attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit before being commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in June of 1941. In October of that year, his unit was merged into the Royal Armoured Corps, and

Photo submitted by Great Western Railway/Wikimedia Commons Great Britain’s Great Western Railway released the following announcement: ‘We are delighted to reveal that the new Intercity Express Train 800025 has been named Captain Tom Moore this morning (April 29) for his remarkable fundraising achievements during #COVID19. This follows a huge amount of requests from staff and members of the public for him to be recognised.’

he was assigned to the 146th Regiment, deployed in India. While there, his regiment participated in the Battle of Ramree Island. (In 2004, the Duke of Wellington Regiment was merged with the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and the Green Howards, all Yorkshire-based regiments in the King’s Division, to form the Yorkshire Regiment. Men from this regiment comprised Capt. Tom’s honor guard.) After stints in Burma and Sumatra after the Japanese surrender, he was promoted to captain. He retired from service after a tour as an instructor at the Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Dorset. His father having been a builder, Capt. Tom apprenticed as a concrete specialist

after the war, and worked with a manufacturing firm as manager for many years.

Family comes better late than never It seemed Capt. Tom was fated to be a lifelong bachelor. But he met and married his late wife, Pamela, at the age of 50. They had two daughters, Lucy and Hannah (Ingram-Moore, with whom he lives). Pamela died in 2006. He has lived with Hannah, her husband, and two grandchildren, in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, since 2008. He also has two other grandchildren. His great-nephew is a pediatric junior doctor at East Surrey Hospital.

Capt. Tom is immensely proud of his family. And watching them together on TV, it’s perfectly obvious they think the world of him. They cheered him every step of the way around that garden.

Recognition overwhelming Capt. Tom never, in his wildest dreams, expected the outpouring of honors for his effort. “Just wanted to do my bit for our brave health workers,” he said. But then came the induction as honorary member of the England Cricket Team, complete with official cap. It is a

improve it based on what you had done and seen and experienced the first time.” Markowitz gives customers a photographic record of how their artworks took shape from start to finish, too. “I show my work a lot on the Treasure Coast,” he said. “I’m an active member of the Port St. Lucie Arts League.” Those art exhibits are now shut down, although after press time some of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ temporary restrictions on businesses and social activities will become moderately more permissive than they were in April. That doesn’t mean art-show organizers are going to rush to resume exhibitions and events. “I don’t rely on my art as a regular income,” Markowitz said. But, he does think of art income as “beer and vodka money.” “I share my art, because I want people to see it,” he added. For now people see his artwork on Facebook — FRMarkowitz Studio. Markowitz is looking forward to meeting fellow artists and art aficionados after the COVID-19 scare passes and exhibits are back. “I miss out on the ability to share my gift,” he said.

Charles Blake Like Markowitz, Blake doesn’t count on his art for income, but the dollars he makes from it are nice. More importantly, like Markowitz, Blake enjoys sharing his art, and that’s next to impossible in the coronavirus reality. “I’ve painted all my life,” he said. “As a boy, my father was a painter and sculptor.” He grew up in a time when newspapers had writing and art contests. Blake entered them. He won sometimes. “My dad always left lots of paper, magic marker and pencils around so I could (draw),” he said. He has — or had until COVID-19 started shutting down the art world in March — worked at various venues.

Among others, Blake has been on exhibit at the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery, Fort Pierce. “I was showing at the Pelican Yacht Club in Fort Pierce,” Blake said. “They closed and I was showing my work from October, November to about three weeks ago. Skylab launches new era in solar research Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

It’s easy to imagine that the Space Race ended on July 20, 1969, when Neil Alden Armstrong and Edwin Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. stepped out of Lunar Module Eagle onto the moon. The fevered competition between the former Soviet Union and United States to outdo one another in space exploration started in full cry with the 1957 launch of Sputnik 1. The Soviets were also the first to put a man into space: Soviet Air Forces Col. Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961. Indeed, the Soviets beat America to pretty much every important space milestone. Except reaching the moon with a crewed spacecraft — Apollo 8 in December of 1968. America would also claim the prize of being the first, and only, country to get a crewed vessel on the moon. The Soviets seemed oddly unperturbed when Armstrong took a small step for a man. They’d already given up on the moon and were turning their attention to a scientifically and militarily more important goal — space stations. Yeah, they’d beat us to that, too, with Salyut 1 in April, 1971. But, two years later America answered with Skylab. America’s inaugural step into space stations launched from the Kennedy Space Station on May 14, 1973.

magnetic field lines.

Skylab’s job

The 1967 Solar Storm

From May of 1973 to February of 1974 three crews manned Skylab for a total of 24 weeks. They had a lot of duties, but one of the most important was solar observations. The astronauts didn’t disappoint science. They gave the world an unprecedented look at our local star including pristine images of solar flares that helped answer a lot of questions about the sun’s magnetic fields. One of the primary beneficiaries to the solar observations Skylab crews made was the military. One of the greatest civil and military threats facing the technology-dependent United States is coronal mass ejections — gigantic explosions on the sun’s surface that make all of the world’s nuclear arsenals look like cap guns. The explosions, called CMEs, can reduce the U.S. military to World War I operative capacity in a heartbeat just in time for continental or global pandemonium as all power grids and electronics fail. What’s more, a CME could do the same thing to every other tech-enhanced military on the planet all at once. Or it could leave the U.S. and Canada, or the Americas, in the lurch while the rest of the world is fine. It all depends on how and when the sun decides to pop its twisting, hyper-charged

The military realized how important understanding the sun is to modern militaries in May of 1967. The Summer of Love was about to begin. Nobody realized we could have had the Summer of War instead. Tensions were high between the United States and Soviet Union. Of course, there was the Vietnam War. North Korea had become the latest Communist country to indirectly enter the war by sending a fighter squadron and anti-aircraft artillery regiments to defend Hanoi. Deaths of American service members were dramatically increasing. Early in ‘67, the U.S. had its largest ground operation yet in Vietnam: Operation Cedar Falls. The anti-war movement was having its largest demonstrations yet in the spring of ‘67. Some in the military believed the demonstrations were worrisome evidence of Soviet orchestration within the U.S. But, there was more. The world was poising for what we’d call the Six-Day War in the Middle East. That had U.S. and U.S.S.R. on edge as leaders at each superpower worried about what the other would do if shooting started. Adding to that, the Soviet Union and China were on edge with each other, too. The Sino-Soviet Split was piqued by the Red

Photo courtesy of NASA The Skylab 4 Command took the last picture from space of America’s first space station. Among Skylab’s missions was cutting-edge solar observations. A coronal mass ejection in 1967 knocked out American arctic surveillance, which could have escalated into nuclear war. Skylab’s observations advanced solar science greatly.

Guards attacking the Soviet embassy in Beijing in early 1967. For all the troubled spots on Earth, that started pushing us toward another world war was 93 million miles away. In the middle of May, solar researchers who didn’t yet have the benefit of Skylab’s observations to make better predictions, noticed a growing clump of sunspots, strong magnetic field lines filled with supercharged plasma on the sun’s surface. When those magnetic field lines burst, the plasma is shot into space. Earth is a small target far as things in space go, but sometimes has the misfortune of crossing the bullseye at exactly the wrong time. On May 23, 1967, those magnetic lines burst big. So big anyone foolish enough to look directly at the sun would have seen them. It’s pretty certain no one at the Air Force’s Ballistic Missile Early Warning System sites was looking at the sun. Three of the sites simultaneously went radar dark in Alaska, Greenland and the United Kingdom. For some military commanders, that could only mean one thing — radar jamming. That alone constituted Soviet aggression teetering on an act of war. But it harbingered a far more ominous threat — Soviet aircraft or missiles were heading over the North Pole. The military acted decisively and prepared for a counterstrike. Nucle-

from page 7 sport he’s loved all his life. And then came the letter from the Queen, and his promotion to honorary colonel in the Royal Army. Capt. Tom was given the prestigious Freedom of Britain Award. On April 29, the Great Western Railway named a train the Captain Tom Moore. A police dog puppy was named after him. Post boxes were painted blue with his name on them and thanks from the NHS. These are just a few. Did I mention he holds the world record for individual fundraising in a charity walk, and the oldest person to record a number-one single on the British charts, (released for charity)? (“You’ll Never Walk Alone,” with singer Michael Ball) The big one was a special fly-past over his house of a World War II Hurricane and a Spitfire. The old gentleman pumped his fist in the air as they thundered past.

So many good lessons No matter what country we live in, we’re all scared and worried these days, now that the coronavirus has turned the world upside down. This modest, yet lively, veteran refused to give in. Age and its infirmities didn’t stop him. He has reminded us that while hope and determination live, so do we all. After his hit record was released, Capt. Tom was quoted in The Daily Sun newspaper as saying, “Hold your head up high, and don’t be afraid of the dark.” When we’re feeling down, let’s take a lap around the garden with Capt. Tom. Because he still hasn’t stopped. “I’ll keep walking as long as they need me,” he said.

ar-equipped aircraft were readied for response. Fortunately, some solar forecasting already existed, and there were cooler heads at the Air Force Air Weather Service and North American Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD. The solar-activity forecasters realized the radar jamming wasn’t Soviet tech and got word through the command tree as fast as possible. The military stood down. The radar disruptions lasted for several days and probably affected the Soviet equipment as much as ours. There’re some debates about how frightening the ’67 event was. Some online who claim they were there say the event was startling, but fairly routine as scares went. Others online who claim they were there say some commanders responded headlong toward striking the Soviet Union with nukes

GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

I’m not likely ever to forget the look on that dear man’s face. Such pride. Such happiness. “I lived when these planes flew in anger, and I’ve lived to see them fly in peace,” he said.

Nine astronauts occupied Skylab for its too-short life. A fourth crew mission was cancelled, and no others were planned. Skylab spent more than five years dutifully circling the planet waiting for us to return. In July of 1979, Skylab finally ended its mission by re-entering the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean. It returned home in a spectacular fireball. Some debris even reached Australia. The U.S. never put up its own space station again. By then, the Soviet Union and United States were turning from the Space Race to cooperation and inviting other nations to join in. Because of those efforts, the International Space Station has been continuously occupied by people from multiple countries since 2000.

Weekly Briefs Children decorate medals to honor Florida National Guard

Award-winning firefighters gear for 2020 season to aid Marines

Memorial Healthcare Systems Memorial Foundation partnered with We Finish Together in Pembroke Pines to supply donated medals to children so they could decorate them for Florida National Guard Soldiers and local partners at a COVID-19 testing site. “It’s touching to receive something like this from children who recognize what we are doing here,” said Spc. Nicholas Y. Owen, an infantryman with the 53rd IBCT. “We loved it and receiving the medals encourages us to continue with the mission with dedication and perseverance.” The test site was the first in South Florida and has collected over 18,000 samples to date. The Florida National Guard has more than 2,900 members on duty in support of Florida’s COVID-19 response. Soldiers and Airmen have administered more than 80,000 sample collections at nine CBTS. The Guard is also helping screen passengers arriving at seven Florida airports.

The Camp Pendleton, Calif., Fire Department prepares for the fires each year by teaming with agencies from the surrounding communities. Mutual aid agreements with local departments allow various organizations to work together during fires, taking care of the local communities who will then help take care of Camp Pendleton. This year, firefighters with CPFD will also perform prescribed burns and cut roughly 200 acres of firebreaks. In 2016, the Camp Pendleton fire department was named the Department of Defense fire department of the year, and was responsible for more than 3,700 emergency responses. The base fire department maintains firebreaks and executes prescribed burns, as well as conducting fire inspections for the buildings on base. The department works with the installation commander and area commanders to establish programs to educate and train service members on fire safety awareness. With support from the base fire department, Marines can conduct the training

exposed with water to their backs against a hidden and barricaded superior force. But the Union commander reportedly took aim at Strain, who, by all reports, had been acting with restraint to that moment. The shooting started. Five of the Union sailors and Marines died in the initial volleys. Another three would die during the retreat. About 30 were wounded, including seven who were taken prisoner. The Union’s U.S.S. Henry Andrew was nearby and attempted to enter the fight, but it ran aground and hoisted a flag of truce. The Confederates had no casualties that day.

The coquina wharf that extended into what we now call the Indian River Lagoon was built in the 1770s. Some of it remains to this day and is an archeological site. The wharf didn’t escape Union notice. That’d lead to two recorded skirmishes in New Smyrna Beach. By the way, it wasn’t just called the Mosquito Inlet at the time. During the Civil War that waterway was also called the Hillsborough River. The first skirmish was in March, 1862 when Union officers set up an ill-advised expedition. Two of those officers took a handful of small boats with about 40 sailors and Marines into the long lagoon on a search-and-destroy mission. There was a small contingent of Confederate soldiers under the command of Cpt. M.H. Strain in New Smyrna that day. He wisely ordered his soldiers to hide. The Gray watched the Blue sail past toward Oak Hill and Titusville and made no effort to stop them. The Union sailors and Marines decided to investigate the wharf on the way back. It probably looked deserted. Right after they landed, Strain made his move. He showed himself and demanded the Union boys to lay down their arms. It’s hard to know what was in the Union commander’s mind. It’s hard to know if he had any inkling that his men were

The Union answered The Confederates continued to make use of the New Smyrna wharf for blockade running, and the Union Navy made plans to end it. In the summer of 1863 Union ships approached New Smyrna. They were loaded for bear. New Smyrna was going down. On July 23, the Union sailors lobbed three shells onto New Smyrna. They were inconsequential, so folks weren’t alarmed at the sight of Union ships in the river on Sunday, July 26. They’d soon regret that dismissiveness. The Union pounded New Smyrna into submission. Veteran Voice found no record that anybody died in the shelling that night. But by all reports there was little town left by Monday morning. Still,

they need without worrying about a fire escalating beyond the impact zone, and at the same time maintain the safety of the residents and the natural state of the installation.

1st Air Force Women’s Fly-In to go virtual Retired Air Force Gen. Lori Robinson will be one of the presenters for the first-ever Air Force Virtual Women’s Fly-In, which is scheduled to be held live on the Columbus Air Force Base, Miss., Facebook page from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. central time May 11. With a nod to female aviation pioneers as the backdrop, the event, which is open to all Airmen regardless of gender or career field, helps Airmen create networks to learn more about experiences, leadership and life. With rated diversity being a top priority for Air Force senior leaders, creating a place to discuss, connect and cultivate relationships, as well as to share struggles, successes, and resources is critical to building the force.

Union sailors and Marines came ashore and set fire to every building left standing. With that, New Smyrna was effectively done as a port for the Confederacy for the rest of the war.

Battle of Olustee Most military historians point to only one battle as a major Civil War engagement in Florida. That was the Battle of Olustee near Lake City early in 1864. The Rebs thwarted Brig. Gen. Truman Seymour’s attempt to march from Jacksonville, which the Union forces had captured in 1862, to Tallahassee. That battle with about 10,500 soldiers had a little more than 300 fatalities. Two thirds of the fatalities were Union troops. By then Floridians were largely as antagonistic toward the Confederate government as they were toward the federal government, and there were murmurings about secession from the Confederacy. Due to its small population, it’d provided more than its fair share of young men to fight — more than a third of its white males over 20. They not only suffered disproportionate fatalities, but also couldn’t get enough leave to visit home, unlike their compatriots whose homes were closer to the fighting. Along with that, Florida suffered disproportionately under the Confederate Impressment Act of 1863 and other laws that allowed the military to basically negotiate below-market prices or outright take what it needed.
