The fight for Florida in the War of Independence STORY ON PAGE 7
“Por España y por el rey, Gálvez en America” by Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau portrays Count Bernardo de Gálvez at the siege of Pensacola in 1781. In 1779 Spain signed a treaty with France, the Treaty of Aranjuez, and declared war on Britain. That brought Spain into the War of Independence, and Florida one step closer to becoming a state. The artist placed his painting on Wikimedia Commons for public use. The title translates to, “For Spain and for King, Gálvez in America.” Image courtesy of artist Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau on Wikimedia Commons
