VETERAN VOICE • JULY 1, 2021 • 3
There’s something you can do July is a hard month for not-for-profits and a peak for deaths by suicide and rate of non-fatal intentional selfharm injuries, followed by the 45- to 64-year-olds. The numbers suggest to me these folks are testing means to die by suicide and, horrifically, perfect them by their late 50s and early 60s. Don’t assume that family members and friends who experienced suicidal ideation in their 20s or 30s are home free now that they’re older. Check on them now and then.
Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

July’s a hard month financially on a lot of folks. Especially if you’re a notfor-profit. July and August are the two worst months for fundraising nationally and in Florida. July’s also bad month for deaths by suicide according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The longstanding assumption deaths by suicide spike in winter is wrong. They spike in the spring and early summer. About a week ago, a friend to Veteran Voice, Margaret, sent me a Facebook message about an organization that works with Veterans experiencing, or at risk for, suicidal ideation. The message explained that the organization is holding a 250 cycling mile challenge for the month of July. Those who sign up for the fundraiser post on social media about their July rides — as they aim for at least 250 miles those 31 days — giving friends opportunities to donate. Margaret knows I love my cycling. She also knows I’m an advocate for raising awareness about and funds to help prevent death by suicide among servicemembers and Veterans. Click! Since I trust Margaret, I signed up right away. Since signing up for this fundraiser Facebook has given me numerous organizations’ ads for July cycling and running challenges. Apparently, they’re the mid-summer not-for-profits’ fundraising craze this year. The new ice-bucket challenge that raised a lot of attention and money for ALS, so other causes tried variations. Before I go anywhere else, your favorite Veterans- or social-service organizations need your help more than ever. July’s always a tough month for them, and in general donations have been down and needs up due to the SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 pandemic. Please look up their websites, or drop by their local offices, and ask what fundraisers are going on that you can help with. If you do a cycling, running or walking fundraiser in July, take care to hydrate and sunscreen. We are in Florida.
Death by suicide I’ll bet you have at least one loss by suicide story. It’s hard to get through modern life without losing friends and family members to what’s the 10th leading cause of death, according to the CDC. I’ve had three losses to suicides right off the top of my head, and I hate that. I bet if I thought about it, I’ve had even more acquaintances who died by suicide, but really don’t care to do that exercise.
Death by suicide among Veterans
Photo by Patrick McCallister Contributing writer Patrick McCallister sports his Veteran Voice cycling jersey while riding in July to raise awareness about and funds to help combat death by suicide among Veterans.
There are now almost 130 deaths by suicide a day in the United States. In 2018, the latest year for reported data for the U.S., 46,510 people died by suicide. The latest available numbers for Florida are from 2019. The Florida Department of Health says in that year there were 3,426 deaths by suicide in the Sunshine State. There were another 12,514 hospitalizations due to self-inflicted injures by people seeking to die by suicide. The department’s website notes — “Other Americans with higher than average rates of suicide are Veterans, people who live in rural areas, and workers in certain industries and occupations, like mining and construction.” Catch that? “Veterans.” Also noteworthy is the age group with the highest count and rate for deaths by suicide in Florida in 2019 are those 55 to 64 years old. There were 722 deaths by suicide in that age group in the state in 2019. The second highest count is 45 to 54 year olds — 607. The second highest age group for rate of death by suicide is those 75 and older. Those 25 to 44 have the highest count
The “2020 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report” from the Department of Veteran Affairs states that in 2018 nearly 6,450 Veterans died by suicide. That’s about 17.5 a day. Yes, that’s considerably lower than the famous 22 a day, which was taken from VA reporting in the early 2000s. In addition to successes in lowering the number of deaths by suicide among servicemembers and Veterans, the Department of Defense and VA changed some reporting to separate servicemembers in and Veterans of the National Guard and Reserves who were never federally activated or called up for extended service. This was due to differences in services available to that group. Still, “22” has come to be recognized as a symbol for death by suicide among servicemembers and Veterans, so displaying it to raise awareness seems wholly appropriate.
Some helpful numbers Florida Veterans, along with their family, friends and advocates have a few resources to seek immediate help. One is the Florida Veterans’ Care Coordination Program at 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838). That is a statewide 211-type number answered by Florida Veterans. In addition to being equipped to help Veterans find mental-health support, it can assist with referrals to help with emergency financial needs. Veterans experiencing any mental-health crisis can also call the Department of Veteran Affairs’ Veterans Crisis Line at (800) 273-8255, extension 1. Veterans can also contact the crisis line by texting 838255, or by visiting www.VeteransCrisisLine.net. Friends and family members can also call the Veterans Crisis Line if they’re concerned about a Veteran. If a Veteran — or anyone — seems to be immediate danger of harming her- or himself, call 911 and stay with the person. Be prepared to give first responders succinct information about the person’s mental-health history, current stressors, and any behavioral patterns that can seem threatening when they’re not.

Somewhat pushed down into the undercurrents of today’s cultural awareness is the kerfuffle surrounding the British Royal Family versus Prince Harry, son of Prince Charles, heir to the throne, and grandson of Her Majesty The Queen. If you’ve been preoccupied with Covid and all of its hardships, you could be forgiven if you missed the notorious Oprah Winfrey interview with Harry and his wife, the former actress Meghan Markle, in which they lobbed a series of grenades at the Royal Family accusing them of, among other things, racism. In the scheme of things American-wise, not much to do with us, and certainly not now, when the pandemic has meant we must focus on the important things that affect us. In the scheme of things Royal-wise, it’s another story, a huge one. I’d like to focus on one aspect of the whole saga that should definitely interest those of us who are military, former military, military family or patriotic supporters. That is, I’d like to take a closer look at Prince Harry’s own military background. Though British, Soldiers are Soldiers. He should be eval-
uated the same as Soldiers around the world, including here.
Some background Harry’s reputation as “troubled” goes back at least to his “party prince” days, with well-documented drug use and drinking to excess. “For many years he was known as the fun-loving brother, a walking-talking-drinking threat to stately protocol. If you were looking for one of the Queen’s grandchildren to be photographed playing naked billiards with a woman in Las Vegas or wearing a swastika armband at a fancy-dress party, then Harry was your man.” www.theguardian.com/ uk-news/2019/oct/26/harrythe-troubled-prince
Army service It was thought that the Army would furnish a good direction forward to straighten Harry out, and it worked, to a certain degree. There were reports of friendship and admiration from Capt. Henry Wales’ subordinate troops, and approving writeups from his superiors. Admiration from the public at large followed, especially when Harry deployed secretly to Afghanistan. Before that, it was to be Iraq, in 2007. Harry was
Not Amused to be left out of things. “[Senior British Army officer] Lord Dannatt said: “I think he came up with the famous line: ‘I haven’t dragged my sorry *** through Sandhurst [Military Academy] for a year not to be allowed to go on operations.’ “He explained why the decision was taken: “Unfortunately, the media speculated so incessantly and so accurately, and by about the time we had to take a final decision of whether we should deploy him or not they had worked out where he’d be, what his unit would be doing, what sort of vehicle he’d be driving and what he’d be wearing.” In Afghanistan, “[t]he most obvious indicator of the uncomfortable fact of his VIP status is that Harry reportedly has armed guards accompanying him at all times inside Camp Bastion, the heavily fortified fortress city of 28,000 army troops in Helmand province.” www.thedailybeast. com/armed-guards-for-harryin-afghanistan There are alleged unflattering accounts of Harry playing video games all day and the like by fellow Soldiers on Facebook and Twitter, which obviously cannot be substantiated. It is true, however, that he only earned co-pilotship on Apache helicopters, and very few flying hours at that. Unfortunately, much of the reality of Harry’s service is
shrouded in the mists of royal and military secrecy.
Thumbing his nose Shortly before Harry married Meghan Markle, in December 2017 he was named by his grandfather to succeed in the honorary title Captain-General of the Royal Marines, a post Prince Philip had held since 1953 and took extremely seriously, hardly ever missing an event. This is one of the most prestigious titles in the entire royal portfolio. Prince Philip reportedly told Harry, “Don’t muck it up.” Harry and Meghan Markle were married in May 2018 (not three days earlier, as alleged on the Oprah Winfrey interview, among many other since debunked assertions). In 1989, the IRA bombed the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal, Kent, England. Eleven band members were killed, and 21 injured. A full year ahead of the commemorative concert to be held in their honor, the Captain-General was issued an invitation to preside, to which Prince Philip would have automatically agreed. Harry issued a decline a bare six weeks ahead of the concert. He wound up attending the premiere of “The Lion King” in London, with his wife,

Upstart Veterans of Indian River County takes a swing at homelessness “I served seven years as the vice president of the Veterans Council,” said Paulisin. Over that time Paulisin has worked closely with the Vietnam Veterans of Indian River County, an organization he’s enthusiastic about and working with. Paulisin said younger Veterans — the Gen-Xers, millennials and now Gen-Yers — need to form organizations to carry on the works in progress. “We’re looking at the Desert Storm and forward to join and continue the work the previous generations paved for us,” he explained.

There’s a new crew in town looking to help reduce homelessness among Veterans. The upstart Veterans of Indian River County co-hosted and benefited from the annual Mary Snyder Golf Tournament on June 19. “This was my actual sixth (time co-organizing) for the golf tournament,” said Curtis Paulisin, president of the nascent Veterans-assistance organization. “For the Veterans of Indian River County this is the first one we’ll get funds out of (it).”
Veterans of Indian River County
Mary Snyder Golf Tournament At press time Paulisin estimates the golf tournament raised about $60,000 — some of that in kind — before expenses. “Last year, we made approximately $21,000, $22,000,” he said. “We blew that away this year.” There was also a 30 percent increase in golfers. “We had 260 golfers this year,” said Paulisin. “The community’s been great to us. They know the money stays here in Indian River, doesn’t leave Indian River.”
Curtis Paulisin Paulisin is an Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm Veteran. He’s been working at forming Veterans of Indian River County for a few years. He’s no stranger to the Veter-

in as the commander.” That landed him on the Veterans Council of Indian River County.
Veterans of Indian River County is working with the Vietnam Veterans of Indian River County and Every Dream has a Price to support housing for Veterans at risk of or experiencing homelessness. It has additional missions. “Our main objective is to help any Veterans coming into Indian River transition to civilian life,” said Paulisin. He explained there are too often lags between servicemembers discharging and the Department of Veteran Affairs getting earned benefits to them. “We’re trying to fill that gap between Veterans transitioning to civilian life and the year it takes the VA to get going,” Paulisin explained. Veterans of Indian River County is looking for members, volunteers, and donations. To learn more, visit www.ircVeterans.org.

where he told a startled Disney executive that she “did voiceovers.” It’s not a stretch to say the military community was shocked and dismayed to the core. www.breitbart.com/ europe/2020/01/13/militarylosing-respect-for-prince-harry-disgusted-at-disrespect-toqueen/ Much has been made of Harry’s Invictus Games campaign for wounded or ill troops (an idea he borrowed from our own U.S. Warrior Games, which is rarely mentioned). Wikipedia.com states that Harry “founded” the Games. In reality, he only inspired them and served as figurehead. The real brains behind the event was his former secretary, Edward Lane Fox. Harry enjoyed “larking about with
the lads” at the Games, and in truth was a great host, as he can be quite charismatic and charming, and was. It seemed a perfect fit. It was the royal attempt to rehabilitate Harry’s image, and it seemed to work. The next Games are scheduled in the Netherlands in 2022. The effectiveness of Harry as host is in doubt, however, especially after the Queen stripped him of his Captain-Generalship and other honorary military titles. Harry’s and his wife’s behavior after being told the titles go when your senior royal duties go has not been exemplary. Thankfully, we in the U.S. left the pomp and circumstance of royal protocol behind in 1776. But we can all relate to someone turning their back on a military role that meant so much to so many. It appears that not even the Army has any influence on Harry anymore.
