West Palm VA gets homelessnessprevention grants into the community Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
The aim is straightforward enough — fewer homeless veterans. That could become a greater challenge in coming months. The West Palm Beach Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center has recently announced it’ll award three area social-service and veterans-assistance organizations $457,000 among them. Steven Tillman, homeless program section chief, said that’s just a portion of what the local VA is doing to help prevent and reduce homelessness among veterans. “That funding is just for the three providers we’re working with,” he said. “We have an array of programs we work with that are funded.” While the three organizations that are receiving funding from this grant are in Palm Beach County their services are open to all qualifying veterans whatever their current addresses are, Tillman said.
Operation 120 One of the organizations that’ll get funding from this grant is Operation 120 in Boca Raton. It specializes in helping atrisk women veterans. Renette Verhaeghe is the founder and president. The organization’s website explains that Operation 120’s mission is, “To empower homeless and at-risk female military veterans to reintegrate successfully into life after service.” Tillman said, “We’re really excited about this new collaboration.” The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs, FDVA, reports that Florida has the second largest population of women veterans in the country — about 160,000. The state has the third largest population of veterans overall with about 1.5 million.
The state’s “2020 Forward March” report states that women veterans are too often unaware they are veterans deserving benefits for their service. As a result many don’t look into VA and other veterans’ benefits and don’t seek help their service has earned them. “FDVA should promote the expansion of peer-to-peer veteran resources and the development of additional services specifically tailored to the needs of women veterans,” the “Forward March” report reads. Operation 120 is in that spirit. Tillman said among other services Operation 120 has six transitional beds for homeless women veterans. “This is an expansion of (West Palm Beach VA Medical Center’s Homeless Program) services for female veterans for perhaps the first time,” he said. “They’re brand new. We’ll work the next couple months to get them up and running.” More about Operation 120 is at www. operation120.org.
Other grantees The other grantees are more familiar to locals and local veterans. One is the Stand Down House in Lake Worth. The Stand Down House has a variety of programs including transitional housing for veterans. Information about it is at www.standown.org. The other is the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope in West Palm Beach. “The Center of Hope is right off Military Trail,” Tillman said. That’s on the same West Palm Beach road about 6.5 miles from the VA medical center that covers the Treasure Coast counties.
Treasure Coast homeless veterans Tillman said according to the 2020 Point in Time Count — done on Jan. 23
— there was already a small increase in unsheltered homelessness among veterans on the Treasure Coast before the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic which hit Florida in March. The VA uses a government definition for “homeless” that fits what most think of when they hear the word — one is unsheltered and sleeping in a vehicle or outdoors. Many homelessness-prevention advocates hold a more expansive definition that includes adults who are “couch surfing,” living with friends who have homes. Indian River County saw one more homeless veteran in the 2020 Point in Time Count than the previous year, 23 up from 22. “In St. Lucie County we had an increase of eight, from 18 to 26,” Tillman said. “Martin County we went from nine (homeless) veterans to 20.” It should be noted that the more urban Palm Beach County had a 17 percent reduction in counted homeless veterans between the 2019 and 2020 counts.
Coming wave possible What many fear is a sharp increase in homelessness in Florida after Gov. Ron DeSantis lifts an eviction moratorium that’s been in effect since April. He recently extended it to October. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also instituted a national eviction moratorium for the remainder of the year citing likelihood of dramatic increases in COVID-19 without it. That order will likely be challenged in legal filings. Both orders have limitations and nuances. “We’re looking at a pending housing crisis, an eviction crisis,” Tillman said. “We’re in a wait and see pattern.” For more about the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center’s Homeless Program visit www.westpalmbeach.va.gov/services/homeless, or call (561) 422-8223.

SFC Alwyn “Al” Cashe
Esper recommends Seminole soldier for Medal of Honor Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
Secretary of Defense Mark Esper now backs efforts to upgrade Oviedo’s SFC Alwyn “Al” Cashe’s Silver Star to a Medal of Honor. On Aug. 24 Esper sent a letter to Rep. Stephanie Murphy, whose district includes all of Seminole County, stating— “After giving the nomination careful consideration, I agree that SFC Cashe’s actions merit award of the Medal of Honor.” For the upgrade to the Medal of Honor to happen Congress will have to waive the usual five-year rule to receive the nation’s highest recognition of valor while serving in uniform. Rep. Michael Waltz, who’s also backed getting Cashe the Medal of Honor covers Volusia County. “We’ve got a few things to do in congress which is looking good, then we’ll get it on the president’s desk for signature,” Waltz said. Texas’ Rep. Dan Crenshaw has joined Waltz and Murphy in leading the longstanding bipartisan efforts in Congress to get Cashe’s Silver Star upgraded. If they are successful,
Cashe will be the 16th Medal of Honor recipient who was born in Florida.
Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn C. Cashe In 2005 Cashe was already a veteran of the Operation Desert Storm, the Bosnian War and a prior tour in Operation Iraqi Freedom. On Oct. 17 that year, he was on patrol as a gunner in a Bradley Armored Fighting Vehicle. An IED hit the vehicle. What’s uncertain is whether the IED was pressure triggered, or remotely ignited. What’s certain is the vehicle’s fuel cell ignited and exploded. As the patrol came under enemy small-arms fire, flames and fuel burst everywhere and rushed through the Bradley. Cashe, remarkably, was for the most part unhurt and free to escape the flames and hide from enemy fire. His uniform had diesel fuel on it — he needed to get away from the flames. Still, Cashe opted instead of getting to safety alone to take the time to get and take the driver with him. That’d been heroism in itself. Cashe wasn’t done. There were
more in the vehicle — six soldiers and an interpreter. Waltz, who’s a Green Beret and colonel in the Florida National Guard, said what happened next has become storied in the Army. Cashe repeatedly rushed into the flames to save others. “His uniform literally melted to his body,” Waltz said. The Bradley behind Cashe’s engaged the enemy as he rescued the soldiers in his. His heroism wasn’t done. Although he had serious burns over 80 percent of his body, the sergeant refused medical treatment until all others were cared for first. The injured were rushed to medical care. Cashe refused attention until he knew his unit mates were getting theirs. “All they could get out of him was, ‘Take care of my men,’” Waltz said. Sadly, three later died despite Cashe’s sacrifices. The injured were transported to Brooks Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. That’s where Cashe died on Nov. 8. Cashe received the Silver Star, but at that time many called for him to receive the Medal of Honor. But, just as he is a “legend in Army circles,” Cashe is a legend
around Seminole County.
Sergeant First Class Alwyn Crendall Cashe Post Office Building While Murphy was working to get Cashe reconsidered for the Medal of Honor, she also filed a bill in January of 2018 to get the post office at 567 E. Franklin St., Oviedo, named for him. Congress passed the bill and Trump signed it on July 24 that year. There was a naming ceremony on May 11 last year. That facility is now known as the Sergeant First Class Alwyn Crendall Cashe Post Office Building. Family members including his son and daughter, Andrew and LeJada, were on hand for the naming ceremony. Andrew Cashe reportedly followed his father into the service and graduated from the Army’s One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Ga., this July. “Alwyn was Central Florida, through and through,” Murphy said at the naming ceremony. “He was born in Sanford. He was raised in

Seminole County war hero Alwyn “Al” Cashe will almost certainly received the Medal of Honor. There are longstanding bipartisan efforts in Congress to see his posthumously awarded 2005 Silver Star upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has announced his support. Now if Congress waives the fiveyear rule for Cashe, President Donald Trump can approve the upgrade and award him the Medal of Honor. Given that Gov. Ron DeSantis has
expressed strong support it’s hard to imagine Trump wouldn’t award the Central Florida native the Medal of Honor. If that happens, Cashe will become the 16th Florida native to receive the nation’s highest recognition for valor while serving in uniform. He’ll become the forth Medal of Honor recipient born in or who joined the service from the Veteran Voice coverage area. Honors to them abound.
Alwyn “Al” Cashe Rep. Stephanie Murphy, who’s now leading congressional efforts to get Cashe recog-

Colonel Deane takes readers behind the scenes of the war in Iraq in “Ramadi Declassified” like no other author on the topic. The work begins with descriptive contact with
the enemy unmatched by any other writer of the war. Colonel Deane details the history of the region as well as firsthand accounts of his many tours of duty in the military. Another aspect is the effect on the lives of the soldiers and their families by the many deployments of our service members. The only negative of “Ramadi Declassified” is that it is a bit hard to follow as it goes back and forth through the years. Regardless “Ramadi Declassified” should be a resource to all branches of the military.

“Three Days in Moscow” takes readers behind the scenes of the Ronald Regan Presidency primarily dealing with the summits with the Soviet Union. We for the first time see the two leaders who confront each other through numerous meetings in the United States and in Soviet Union. For the first time readers have a ringside seat to the speech Regan made at the Berlin Wall and possible consequences as well as little known facts of the Regan Presidency. “We Had To Be Brave” chronicles an aspect of the Holocaust, few of us have ever known about, until now. Hopkinson meticulously details Kindertransport, a movement established that saved the lives of ten thousand Jewish children trapped in Germany and Austria, in the years of 1938-1939, providing them a way to escape the Nazi regime to other countries including Great Brittan and United States. It was also thru many of their parents who were committed to saving their children any way they could. Most of the parents lost their lives in the death camps but some were reunited with their offspring after the end of the war. The first hand accounts shed new attention to the atrocities committed throughout Europe by the Nazis to eliminate one group of people based on one man’s insane desires. Though “We Had To Be Brave” depicts one of humanities darkest hour, it shows another more positive side of civilization’s kindness of individuals forsaking everything to save others. “We Had To Be Brave” is not just for young people, but all ages, that, should be included in all courses about the Holocaust, as well as Judaic studies to dispel the Nay Sayers who believe the atrocity never

Many readers may ask why am I reviewing a kid’s book in a publication for Veterans. Simplest answer is that “Saved By A Book” has several story arcs that anyone of any age can relate to. Five-year-old Kiki for some time has been looking forward to her first day of kindergarten that she thinks as, a new adventure in her life. The anticipated day becomes a painful experience as something changes for Kiki. Her teacher tries to assist her but Kiki just wants to go home until something else changes her perspective once again. How many of us were Kiki on the first day of school? Now for the other aspect that ties it in with this publication. During my basic training at Fort Dix New Jersey, other recruits could be classified as Kiki. We anticipated our tour as something exciting but once there many wanted to go home. Some went AWOL or others tried like Corporal Max Klinger of MASH to get out of their obligation. Others found something that changed them around to continue their basic training and tours of duty. Exactly like Kiki who realized it was not as bad as it had seemed.” For anyone who loves to read there are several other aspects, a person never outgrows that make “Saved By A Book” so adorably enjoyable. “Saved By A Book” speaks to many of us in different ways to learn to face a problem by finding a comfort zone to get through it.

his Bradley Fighting Vehicle was struck by an IED, which ruptured the vehicle’s fuel cell. Although soaked in diesel fuel and under enemy fire, Cashe saved six comrades from the burning vehicle. In the process he was burned over 75 percent of his body. He died from the injuries at Brooke Army Medical Center, Texas, on Nov. 8, 2005.
Ardie R. Copas The next state veterans nursing home that’ll open is named for Fort Pierce native Ardie R. Copas. That’s the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home that’ll soon open in Port St. Lucie near 10700 S.W. Tradition Parkway. Copas died on May 12, 1970, while serving as a machinegunner in the Army’s Company C, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division during combat near Ph Romeas Hek, Cambodia. A large force attacked the unit suddenly that morning. Copas’ armored car was hit seriously injuring four. Although also injured, Copas remounted the burning vehicle to suppress belligerents as others evacuated wounded comrades to safety. Copas died in the battle. Copas is one of the Valor 24 Medal of Honor recipients. In 2002 Congress mandated a review of records to discover if there were Jewish, Hispanic and black service members wrongfully passed over for the Medal of Honor due to possible discrimination. After a laborious, decade-long search, Pentagon researchers found 24 that they strongly believed would have received the Medal of Honor much sooner under other circumstances. Copas posthumously received the Medal of Honor in 2014. He is interred at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce.
Emory L. Bennett
Probably the most wellknown among the three current Medal of Honor recipients from the Veteran Voice coverage area is Emory L. Bennett. Folks in Brevard County are familiar with the Emory L. Bennett Causeway, State Road
528, that spans the Banana River. There’s also a monument to Bennett at Riverfront Park at 401 River Edge Blvd. in Cocoa Village. Bennett was born in New Smyrna Beach, so Volusia County has also honored him. The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs’ first state veterans nursing home — built in Daytona Beach — was named after him. That’s at 1920 Mason Ave. One of Volusia County’s largest parks is the Pfc. Emory L. Bennet Veterans Park at 1365 Veterans Memorial Parkway in Orange City. On June 24, 1951, Bennett’s unit was near Sobangsan, Korea. At about 2 a.m. the enemy launched an overwhelming human wave attack. The Medal of Honor citation states that Bennett left his foxhole to rush through fire and shoot at belligerents. No one has a count, but reports say he’d killed several. The battle slowed, and Bennett’s company regrouped. But the enemy sent another overwhelming attack. Commanders ordered a withdrawal. Bennett volunteered to stay back to give cover fire, a decision that could only end with his death. Bennett’s self-sacrifice gave others a chance to withdraw to safety. His body arrived home on November 23, 1951. He is interred at Pinecrest Cemetery in Cocoa. Bennett was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1952.
Robert J. Miller
Miller was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Illinois. He relocated to Seminole County after graduating high school in 2002. He joined the Army in 2003 and served in Company A, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group. On Jan. 25, 2008, Miller was leading Afghan National Security Forces during a reconnaissance patrol in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. The team came under insurgent fire. A close airstrike was presumed to have eliminated the enemy, but the insurgents resumed their heavy fire on the team, making medical evacuations impossible. Miller got between the team and insurgents to give suppressive fire. The enemy were barely 20 meters away. Miller

The Corporal Larry E. Smedley Medal of Honor Highway
killed at least 10 insurgents, wounded many more, but was injured while maneuvering to a more advantageous position. He died at 24, but saved 15 nationals and seven fellow Green Berets. The staff sergeant is buried at All Faiths Memorial Park in Casselberry. Although he relocated to, joined the military from, and is interred in Florida, Illinois awarded Miller the Order of Lincoln, the state’s highest honor, in 2010. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor in 2010.
The Florida Legislature renamed the portion of Interstate 4 that runs between Orlando in Orange County and Altamonte Springs in Seminole the Corporal Larry E. Smedley Medal of Honor Highway. The naming was done in 2005. Although he was born in Virginia, Larry Eugene Smedley moved to Orlando sometime in his elementary school years. He attended Howard Junior High, which is now a middle school, and Colonial High School. He left school early to sign up for the Marine Corps in 1966. He received the Medal of Honor for actions taken to protect his unit in December of 1967.

CASHE from page 5
Oviedo. He went to Oviedo High School. And he was laid to rest at a cemetery in Sanford. He represents what is best about this community and about this country.” Murphy’s predecessor, the former Rep. John Mica, also worked to get Cashe considered for the Medal of Honor. He, too, was successful in getting a Seminole County landmark named for Cashe.
Sergeant 1st Class Alwyn C. Cashe U.S. Army Reserve Center The Sergeant 1st Class Alwyn C. Cashe U.S. Army Reserve Center is at 3566 Skyway Drive in Sanford. That naming was done in 2014. Mica was on hand at the naming ceremony to unveil the plaque with Cashe’s mother, Ruby May Cashe. Mica worked with then Rep. Corrine Brown, a Democrat whose district included parts of Volusia just north of Cashe’s hometown, to get
him considered for the Medal of Honor. Mica lost his seat to Murphy in the 2016 election. She won reelection in 2018 when Republican Waltz won the seat just north of hers, which included the area Brown used to cover. The bipartisan efforts to get Cashe’s Silver Star continued.
Possible Florida honors If they’re successful Cashe will likely become the 24th Medal of Honor recipient honored at the Florida’s Medal of Honor Wall at the Florida Capitol Building. He’d also qualify to have a future state veterans nursing home named after him. Gov. Ron DeSantis has posted support for Cashe to receive the Medal of Honor. “Alwyn Cashe is an American hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice to save the lives of his fellow soldiers,” DeSantis wrote. “I commend @EsperDOD for this long overdue recognition and look forward to President @realDonaldTrump awarding our nation’s highest honor to this great Floridian.” Waltz looks forward to Cashe getting the honor. “I think he really exemplifies with the Medal of Honor is all about,” the congressman said.

Prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick Accessible version: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html
If you are sick with COVID-19 or think you might have COVID-19, follow the steps below to help protect other people in your home and community.
Stay home except to get medical care. • Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and are able to recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas. • Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. • Get medical care when needed. Call your doctor before you go to their office for care. But, if you have trouble breathing or other concerning symptoms, call 911 for immediate help. • Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home. • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available. If you need to be around other people or animals in or outside of the home, wear a cloth face covering. ɞ See COVID-19 and Animals if you have questions about pets: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019ncov/faq.html#COVID19animals
Monitor your symptoms. • Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and cough. Trouble breathing is a more serious symptom that means you should get medical attention. • Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department. Your local health authorities will give instructions on checking your symptoms and reporting information.
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*: • Trouble breathing • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest • New confusion or not able to be woken • Bluish lips or face *This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.
Call 911 if you have a medical emergency. If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the operator that you have or think you might have, COVID-19. If possible, put on a facemask before medical help arrives.
Call ahead before visiting your doctor. • Call ahead. Many medical visits for routine care are being postponed or done by phone or telemedicine. • If you have a medical appointment that cannot be postponed, call your doctor’s office. This will help the office protect themselves and other patients.
If you are sick, wear a cloth covering over your nose and mouth. • You should wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth if you must be around other people or animals, including pets (even at home). • You don’t need to wear the cloth face covering if you are alone. If you can’t put on a cloth face covering (because of trouble breathing for example), cover your coughs and sneezes in some other way. Try to stay at least 6 feet away from other people. This will help protect the people around you. Note: During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical grade facemasks are reserved for healthcare workers and some first responders. You may need to make a cloth face covering using a scarf or bandana.
