On the Cover Rosary High School Announces 2014 Graduates Rosary High School held a Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2014 on May 20 at St. John Neumann Church in St. Charles, Illinois. The Mass was celebrated by Father David Peck and Deacon Paul Iwanski. Diplomas were presented to the 82 graduates by Rosary Principal Sister Ann Brummel, O.P., Assistant Principal Michelle Salerno, and Class of 2014 Valedictorian Rebecca Fritz. Music was provided by Rosary’s orchestra and chorus, directed by Ms. Megan Drahos. The graduation speaker was Siobhan Midgley. “Together we’ve gone from Rebecca Fritz wide-eyed young girls, unsure Valedictorian and untrained, to confident young women with our heads full of knowledge and ideas, goals and dreams,” Midgley said. “Coming to Rosary has taught me this: When God blesses you, it isn’t for you. It’s so you can bless someone else. We’ve been blessed with the strength, silliness, and selflessness of each other’s company for the last four years, and now it is time to give those blessings to others,” she continued. In conclusion, Midgley said: “I leave you tonight, not with a quote from Wikipedia or some deep, profound advice, but rather, the sage words of Aibileen Clark from The Help: ‘Wherever you go, whatever you do, whoever you become, always remember that you is kind, you is smart, and you is important!’ Siobhan Midgley Graduation Speaker

Siobhan is the daughter of Frederick and Landa Midgley of Aurora. She will attend the University of Illinois at Chicago Honors College in Chicago. To read her full speech, visit www. rosaryhs.com.

Parents Auxiliary Scholarships Presented at Mother-Daughter Brunch

Five Rosary graduates were awarded scholarships from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley: Amy Cole, the H. Marshall Glenn Scholarship; Paige DeWane, the Howard E. Charles, Jr. Scholarship; Julia Hoyda, the Louis Vago Scholarship; Devon James, the Ruth H. and B. R. Skaggs Scholarship; and Taylor Vandenberg, the Mr. and Mrs. William P. Hilgen Scholarship.

The Parents’ Auxiliary is proud and pleased to present three $500 scholarships annually to RHS students. These scholarships are presented each spring at the Mother-Daughter Brunch.

Since 1949, the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley has awarded more than $9.5 million in scholarships. The Community Foundation 2014 Scholarship Program offers scholarships to students who will attend an accredited institution of higher education on a full-time basis during the 2014-2015 academic year. To apply for the scholarships, students write an anonymous essay about a significant and special community service activity. They share the details of their participation in this activity, and the impact and impression it has made upon the community served, as well as the impact it has had on them personally.

Our annual scholarships are awarded to one current Junior returning to Rosary for her Senior year and to two Seniors as they continue their education at the college of their choice. This year we presented the two senior scholarships to Ali Krantz and Julia Hoyda. Our Junior award (for her RHS senior year) went to Catherine Hayes.

Foundation funds are used to provide grants to non-profit organizations and scholarships to area students. The foundation serves the greater Aurora area, the tri-cities and Kendall County in the state of Illinois. For more information, visit www. communityfoundationfrv.org.

Student Spotlight Jenig Wins Creative Writing Class Children’s Book Author Award The final project of Mrs. Laura Ruddy’s Creative Writing class is a children’s book that the students had worked on for the semester. From the topic, outline, first and second drafts, to the final composition, one can see the hard work and the attention to detail these students gave! Each year, one young author is selected by the English Department to receive the“Creative Writing Children’s Book” award. The 2014 recipient is Ryane Jenig with her submission of The Best Ever. Ryane not only wrote the book, but she illustrated her story as well. “Ryane is a very gifted young lady,” says Mrs. Ruddy. “Her ability to connect with a younger audience and be able to relate her own experiences to this audience demonstrates master use of her writing abilities! Ryane’s book went through many editing sessions to transform her simple topic of sibling rivalry into an imagery-filled story that children found entertaining and relatable.” Part of Ryane’s award was to read her story to the first, second, and third grade classrooms at Annunciation BVM School. Students, staff, families and school clubs donated bricks and filled the rendering of the home in our school’s prayer space. We raised about $8750, including a $1500 matching gift from the Aurora Rotary Club. We completed the project with funds to spare and will consider how those funds can be used to improve life in the Haitian village.

Young Athletes is an innovative sports play program for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities and their peers, designed to introduce them to the world of sports prior to Special Olympics eligibility at age 8. These activities help the children improve physically, cognitively and socially, and provides an appreciation of fitness and sport for the entire family.

Development The Benefits of Hiring a Rosary Graduate “Personnel is everything in the success of an organization,” says attorney Edward P. Graham of Naperville. “I have hired many people through the years, but I am particularly impressed by the young women in our office who came from Rosary.” Mr. Graham’s daughter Mary (’12) is a marketing assistant at the Law Offices of Edward P. Graham, Ltd. in Naperville. She works 20-25 hours per week as she continues her education. Two of Mary’s classmates also work for the firm: Junelly Gonzalez (’12) has some paralegal responsibilities and is interested in becoming a lawyer, and Michelle Hannah (’12) is an administrative assistant. “Rosary gave them the preparation and fundamental skills that translate to a business environment,” Graham said. “These young women carry themselves in a professional fashion, from their business attire to their positive demeanor, and their motivation to achieve and excel.

Attorney Edward P. Graham, Mary Graham (‘12), Michelle Hannah (‘12) and Junelly Gonzalez (‘12)

“They are well-prepared in the level of writing and communication needed in the legal world. Their attitude is centered on their work, and they appreciate the opportunities available to them,” he said. “A law office requires pristine documents,” Graham said. “Junelly has an exceptionally strong background in English and is a very good proofreader.” Michelle began with the law firm in December of 2013. “Her trajectory has been strong,” Graham said. “We moved her to being the front person for the office. She is the first person our current and potential clients see. She also handles accounting matters and has been an unofficial IT person, helping us to figure out some software issues.”

Personnel is everything in the success of an organization.

“Like Mary and Junelly, she is dedicated to her work. She has integrity and an amazing ability to learn and to execute what we need,” he said. “A Rosary graduate is distinguishable from others,” Graham said. “If someone hires a Rosary graduate, they are going to get a young woman who has been formed in the tradition of excellence

18

in the classroom. They will have a value system fully consistent with what a future employer might want.” Graham also recognizes the difference the single gender environment provides Rosary students. “It has an impact on how these young ladies see themselves. They know how to carry themselves as a woman in 2014.” Graham has two daughters who are Rosary graduates: Mary (’12) and Anna (‘10). Anna is a student at Ball State. “As the parent of two Rosary daughters, I can say that my girls received a very strong education that will allow them to succeed in college and in their careers if they choose, or as they raise children. It is just as important that those values are passed on to the next generation.” “I would encourage anyone looking to hire for their business to consider a Rosary graduate. They have that profile that employers can see right away—they are focused, they are reliable, they have a strong moral compass, and they are prepared to contribute on their first day.” Connect with Rosary High School on LinkedIn at RosaryHighSchool (Aurora, IL) and Rosary High School Alumnae Association in Aurora, IL. Development Rosary Celebrates Grandparents Day April 3 Inspirational, wise, compassionate, chocolate-giver, fun, makes me laugh, superhero.....these are a few of the phrases written by Rosary girls to describe their grandparents for Rosary’s annual Grandparents Day on April 3. The day began with a welcome by senior class president Rebecca Fritz, and music from the beginning and advanced choruses and Ensemble. Prayer was led by Adrienne Winkel, Christina Carbonara, Mallory Rettenmeier, and Dominican Preacher Elayne Young. Speaking on the wisdom of grandparents were Campus Minister Sandy Iwanski, Brittany McCullough, Lizzi Sayasane, Bridget Crantz, Morgan Martinez, Gen Talbot and Rachel Groth. Deacon Paul Iwanski led the Grandparent Blessing, and Principal Sister Ann Brummel, OP, addressed the group.

After the ceremony, granddaughters took their grandparents on a tour of the school, introduced them to their teachers, and captured the memory of the day with a family portrait. To all Rosary grandparents… we celebrate you and we thank you because we experience your spirit, your wisdom and your love through your granddaughters every day!
