VIDCON 2018
2
WELCOME Hello, and welcome to the 9th Annual VidCon.
I
’m Hank. I started VidCon with my brother in 2010, and it’s taken me this long to realize something fairly obvious about myself: I’m a ridiculous fanboy. I love loving things. And I love loving them deeply and with attention. When I find something wonderful, I don’t just want to watch it; I want to know everything. How was it made? What inspired it? Who was behind the camera? Who is that person, really?
There’s no better time to be that kind of fan. I don’t just have Nathan Zed’s videos; I have his tweets and his Instagram stories. I find out a little more about the guy behind those videos every day, and I get to watch him grow as a creator. And VidCon is a chance to love the things we love in whatever way we choose. To go deeper, or broader, or just to finally find someone else who is into all the same stuff as me. Because, ultimately, if you’re looking for the real inspiration behind great content, or the real reason creators can make a living doing what they do, it’s the fans, the community, the people who love it. I know that because I’m also a professional YouTuber, and I have been for (and this seems impossible) a decade now. I know it’s not lip service; I know why I keep making stuff. And knowing how important the audience is makes me an even more enthusiastic fan.
Hank Green
VIDCON 2018
The greatest joy of being backstage at VidCon is not seeing my favs and trying to bumble through my first ever IRL interaction with, say, Elle Mills (which I might be awkwardly having as you read this); it’s watching other people do the same. It’s seeing a creator who I see as untouchably huge melt with joy upon seeing someone they’ve been watching and respecting and loving for years and realizing that, in this place, we’re all fans.
6/20 - 6/23
I think most great creators are fans first, because that’s how you learn what you love. It’s hard to make something you love without knowing what it is. My brother once said that reading is the only true apprenticeship for writing, and I think that applies to all media. In the same way that you can read deeply, you can watch and listen deeply, too.

FAQ How do I figure out what’s going on at VidCon?
There are multiple ways to find out what’s happening around you at VidCon. You can look through our agenda in the guide you are holding now or check our website at vidcon.com/fullagenda. You can also download our app! Just search VidCon in the app store. The app is your one-stop shop to be totally in the know of what’s happening in the VidCon world. To be super duper up to date, you can also follow us on Twitter @VidCon.
What does my badge/RFID wristband give me access to?
Community pass holders have access to all content taking place on the first and second floors of the main building and the AwesomenessTV Festival Area. This includes four halls filled with panels, Q&As, expo booths, concerts, and more. If you participated in the Meet & Greet Lottery, you will also have access to the Instagram Meet & Greet Hall downstairs during your allotted sessions. Check the Community Track schedule on page 24 to see what’s what! Creator pass holders have access to the 200 level of ACC North, which includes Creator Track keynotes, lounges, workshops, panels, networking, and a reception Saturday evening. Creator pass holders also have access to everything Community badge holders have access to EXCEPT the Instagram Meet & Greet Hall. Head to page 46 to see all that’s in store for the Creator Track!
6/20 - 6/23
Industry pass holders have special access to the third floor of the convention center, which will include Industry Track keynotes, workshops, the Amazon Industry Lounge, panels, and receptions. On top of that, Industry pass holders have access to all events happening within the convention center, including the Instagram Meet & Greet Hall (but only if they participated in the Meet & Greet Lottery). See page 60 for the full Industry Track schedule.
VIDCON 2018 10
Where is the thing I’m trying to go to?
Maps of the whole convention center and surrounding areas begin on page 4. Each agenda item will have a room number or name next to it, so cross-reference that with the map and you’re good to go! If you still feel lost, ask a staff member or security guard, or visit our VidCon Info Desk in Lobby C.
Is there WiFi?
Yes, WiFi is available at the convention center. However, with 20,000+ people trying to connect at once, it may not be the best.
How do I share my experience at VidCon 2018?
Tag everything with #VidConUS. That includes your videos, facebooks, instagrams, tweets, twitches, pins, snaps, and chats.
How can I meet my favorite YouTuber?
The Meet & Greet Lottery results have been distributed. If you received Meet & Greets, they are on your RFID wristband which you will need, along with your badge, to enter the Instagram Meet & Greet Hall. However, our Featured Creators will also be participating in panels, Q&As, and other fun content throughout VidCon, so there are lots of chances for you to see them this weekend. A limited number of impromptu, first-come, first-served meet & greets will take place in Hall D. Because these are spontaneous, we can’t share who will be there when, but you may have a chance to see one of your favorites there! Download the VidCon app and follow @VidCon on Twitter for live updates on appearances in this area during the event!
Where can I score a delicious meal?
Don’t let the hanger set in! There are plenty of options around the convention center, including a bunch of great food trucks in the AwesomenessTV Festival Area and the Arena Plaza, as well as some food court options within the convention center.
I’m a parent/guardian. What should I do all weekend?
If you have purchased a VidCon ticket, you can spend time in the Parents’ Lounge presented by Fatherly (located in the Registration Hall), or you can hang out with your child and go to programming to learn more about this online video thing. (If your child is under the age of 13, you must accompany them at all times.) If you don’t have a VidCon ticket, you will not be permitted inside the event, so feel free to enjoy the Parents’ Lounge!
Where is the Lost and Found?
If you have found a lost item, please bring it to the VidCon Info Desk, located in the lobby between Halls B & C. If you have lost an item, please go to the VidCon Info Desk to see if it has been returned or contact the Anaheim Convention Center Lost & Found. Their office is near Hall A and the Arena and can be contacted at (714) 765-8950.
My badge or wristband was damaged or lost. What do I do?
Damaged, broken, defaced, or lost credentials can be replaced for a $20.00 fee. If you replace a wristband, the original wristband will be deactivated and a new one will be loaded with all of your current info. To request a replacement credential, simply go back to the Registration Hall (sponsored by Craft City) on the 100 level of ACC North. You must provide a photo ID or some proof of purchase in order to get a replacement.
Where are the All Gender Bathrooms? All Gender Bathrooms may be found in the following locations: Outside of Lobbies A and C, near ACC Room 205, ACC Room 303, ACC North Room 254, and the Arena Southside.

CODE OF CONDUCT It is vital to us that VidCon be a safe place for all attendees. VidCon is a private event, and people who mistreat or disrespect other people will be removed and not allowed for the duration of the event. VidCon reserves the right to permanently ban attendees and guests who do not comply with the code of conduct, including for future events put on by VidCon LLC.
Please use good judgment and be respectful, as we’ll dislike throwing you out almost as much as you’ll dislike being thrown out. Also, please keep in mind that we are sharing the convention center campus and hotels with others, and it is our duty to be friendly neighbors. Not everyone “gets” this thing we are all into. Let’s show everyone that we are a positive and friendly group. By registering to be in attendance at VidCon, you hereby agree to the following:
ACCESS
FEATURED CREATORS
MINORS
VidCon is an all-ages event. An attendee’s age may affect whether they need a ticket and if they are permitted to attend on their own: Minors 8 & under do not need a ticket but must be accompanied by an adult (18+) who has purchased a ticket to attend VidCon. Minors between the ages of 9 and 12 must have a VidCon ticket and must be accompanied by a ticketed adult (18+) at all times.
Pranks that are emotionally or physically harmful to any people or property at VidCon, actually or potentially, are prohibited. If we hear about anyone pranking in ways that are disruptive to the well-being of our guests or attendees, disciplinary action may be taken, including being banned from future events put on by VidCon.
Minors 13 or older are not required to be accompanied by a chaperone if it’s OK with their parent/guardian. If a parent/guardian would like to accompany their child in any capacity, they need a ticket to attend VidCon.
LISTEN TO STAFF
Parents or adult supervisors of minors are responsible for the actions of minors they are supervising. Minors may be prohibited from certain areas due to the sale of alcohol.
All VidCon attendees and badge purchasers must adhere to the instructions of all VidCon employees and agents, all security employees and agents, the staff of Anaheim Convention Center, and any and all law enforcement personnel.
PROHIBITIONS
Alcohol, drugs, weapons, and items that can be mistaken as weapons are expressly prohibited, even if they are part of a costume. Masks or other headpieces that cover the entire face are not allowed. Large backpacks are not allowed, and small backpacks and other similar containers are subject to search and may be prohibited. Unlawful sale or attempted sale of badges and RFID wristbands will result in the revocation of those credentials without refund.
IMAGE RELEASE
This is the part where we go ahead and state the obvious. VidCon is an event produced by, for, and about online video enthusiasts. As such, VidCon may be recorded or reproduced by VidCon, its designees, and/or attending participants. By registering to be in attendance at VidCon, you hereby authorize VidCon, its designees, and/ or attending participants to record, transcribe, modify, reproduce, perform, display, transmit and distribute in any form and for any purpose any such recordings of VidCon. By registering for VidCon you hereby release VidCon, its designees, and/or its attending participants from any and all claims it or its employees or agents may possess, now or in the future, in connection with such activities.
LIABILITY
You assume any and all risks occurring before, during, or after VidCon. You release VidCon and the Anaheim Convention Center and their agents, licensees, assignees, and their respective affiliates and representatives from any related claims.
VIDCON TERMS OF USE
All VidCon attendees and guests are required to adhere to this Code of Conduct. The VidCon badge, which is required for admittance to all VidCon activities, is a revocable license. VidCon or its designees may, without refund, revoke this license for noncompliance with these terms or for disorderly conduct.
ANAHEIM CONVENTION CENTER TERMS OF USE
Attendees of VidCon agree to observe and comply with any and all policies, rules, and regulations of the Anaheim Convention Center. VidCon or its designees may, without refund, revoke this license or refuse admission for failure to observe and comply with any and all policies, rules, and regulations of the Anaheim Convention Center. Attendees of VidCon agree to observe and comply with all laws, statutes, ordinances, rules and regulations of the Government of the United States, State of California, County of Orange, and the City of Anaheim. VidCon reserves the right to change or modify any policy or rule at any time and without notice.
VIDCON 2018
The Featured Creators who participate in VidCon are excited to see attendees, but please be respectful. They need to be safe and ensure all attendees are safe while moving around the event, so do not run at or crowd around Creators in public walkways, near escalators, or around doorways. Creators also need to take a break at their hotel, so attempting to follow them to their rooms, riding the hotel elevators, waiting in the hotel lobby, or any other similar behavior is prohibited. Purchasing a VidCon pass does not guarantee that you will meet a particular Featured Creator.
Disorderly conduct includes (but isn’t limited to) any behavior that is illegal, unsafe, disruptive, discriminatory or causes excessive discomfort to our attendees or guests. If someone doesn’t want to talk to you, don’t keep talking to them. If you do not have permission to touch someone, do not touch them. Please view our Anti-Harassment Policy for more information.
6/20 - 6/23
VidCon badges and RFID wristbands are required for attendance to all official VidCon events. Badges must be worn around the neck and visible at all times. Badges and RFID wristbands are non-transferable. We do not clear rooms between events. All activities have limited capacity as set by the Fire Marshal, so even though your badge and wristband are required to access all activities, it does not guarantee you access to any activity if it has reached its capacity. All Meet & Greets are of a limited nature, and your VidCon badge and wristband do not guarantee autographs or photos in the Meet & Greet Hall.

DOs & DON’Ts
DO have a great time! There are literally actually hundreds (or thousands?) of things to do this year at VidCon, and we want you to experience as many of them as possible! Get out there and laugh and hug and learn and celebrate as much as you want.
DON’T freak out. Well...feel free to freak out, but do it in a way that doesn’t freak
other people out. By which we mean: be considerate! We are people of the internet, and people of the internet are oftentimes a shy, easily overwhelmed bunch. Please take this into consideration and show common courtesy to other attendees and Featured Creators by being respectful of personal space and others’ feelings. Walk, don’t run. Be sensible and safe in your enthusiasm!
DO come prepared. Make a game plan for what you want to see and do at VidCon. Our mobile app lets you customize and save your personal schedule, so be sure to download it and take some time to pick out those can’t-miss panels and activities. Also: wear comfortable shoes. Put on some sunscreen. Bring snacks, drink water, and...
DON’T forget to eat! Or sleep! Take care of yourself. We know that VidCon is
jam-packed with fun times and a dozen awesome things are always happening, but food and slumber are very much required for you to continue to properly function as a human being. So plan breaks into your schedule for meals and rest. And most importantly — HYDRATE, FEEL GREAT.
DO make friends! We’re here because we REALLY love the same things. So take this weird and unique opportunity to meet new people — you’ve already got a lot in common with them. New friends make waiting in line THE BEST TIME EVER!
DON’T do anything that would force us to have to kick you out, like violating the
Code of Conduct or the Anti-Harassment Policy. Also: pranks often make for some great videos, but when they are emotionally or physically harmful/damaging, that is not okay. If we hear about anyone pranking in ways that are disruptive to the well-being of our guests or attendees, there’s a pretty strong chance it will get the prankster booted out of VidCon.
6/20 - 6/23
DO let us know if you see any unsafe or sketchy things happening. We
want VidCon to be a comfortable space for everyone, so if you witness someone doing something that’s not safe, please tell us. There are security, staff, and police officers around who want to help, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you see anything worrying or dangerous. You can also call our 24-hour emergency hotline at (657) 203-9695.
DON’T feed the trolls. There may be protesters outside the convention
VIDCON 2018 14
center. Do not engage! Engaging makes them more protest-y! Ignoring them is the way to go -- what they want is a reaction, so do not give them cause, reason, or opportunity to debate. Security will also be monitoring them to make sure they don’t cross the line.”
”
DO dole out the high fives! Thumbs up all around! Thank a staff member or guard. Compliment a stranger. Be rad. Positivity ftw. And lastly...
DON’T FORGET TO BE AWESOME!
VIDCON US ANTI-HARASSMENT POLICY Statement of Policy:
VidCon is dedicated to providing a harassment-free event experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity, age, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Use of lewd or discriminatory language and imagery is never appropriate at VidCon. Repeat offenders may be subject to further disciplinary action, such as being banned from participating in any future events.
Did you pre-order merch for VidCon 2018?
6/20 - 6/23 VIDCON 2018
Then stop by the VidCon Merch Redemption booth in Hall A to pick up your VidCon t-shirts and posters! You can pick these up any time the Expo Hall is open, so you have all weekend to get your stuff. Don’t forget, though, because if you forget to pick it up, we won’t be able to ship it to you. To redeem your preordered merch, all you have to do is scan your RFID Wristband at the booth. Didn’t pre-order merch? That’s OK! You can still buy VidCon swag at the DFTBA booth, also located in Hall A.

MEET & GREETS CREATORS WANT TO MEET AND TALK TO THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEIR CONTENT, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEIR CONTENT WANT TO MEET THEM. AT THE SAME TIME, WE WANT YOU TO ENJOY ALL THAT VIDCON HAS TO OFFER, RATHER THAN SPEND TOO MUCH TIME WAITING IN LINE!
6/20 - 6/23 VIDCON 2018 16
All meet & greets have been ticketed ahead of time through a randomized lottery that took place in May. The lottery has already been drawn, and there isn’t a way to get into the Instagram Meet & Greet Hall if you don’t have the appropriate credentials in your RFID wristband.
You can line up in Hall D for each session ONE HOUR BEFORE the scheduled start time through ONE HALF HOUR AFTER the scheduled start time. If you show up earlier, security will tell you to go explore the amazing Expo Halls and come back later. If you show up late...well, don’t show up late.
When you picked up your badge at registration, you received your RFID wristband, which holds all of the meet & greets that you were selected for in the lottery. Damaged or defaced wristbands will not be honored; they may be replaced for a $20.00 fee. They’re specifically designed to withstand showers and parties and all kinds of stuff, so keep them on! You will not get into your meet & greet session if you don’t have it.
Once inside the hall, there will be signs to remind you who will be in each area. Head to the correct queue number and your wristband will be scanned to make sure you are in the right place. Once you are scanned in and confirmed, you are good to go! Don’t forget to say hello to the person next to you in the queue zone — chances are you have a lot in common! Please note: Some creators are doing several sessions during VidCon, but you will only be allowed at the specifically scheduled time given to you with your lottery results.
There are two types of meet & greets at VidCon. Please check the signage & listen to staff instructions to help speed the process along. Professional Photographs: You’ll be given a card with a website and an ID code after your photo is taken. You can then go to that website, enter your code, and it will take you straight to your photos! Sorry, no selfies at this type of session! Some creators may allow autographs - please listen to security staff for further instructions. Don’t worry if you’re not seeing your photos right away. Pictures can take up to 24 hours to appear on the website. Selfies and Autographs: Pretty self-explanatory! Please respect a limit of up to one selfie and/or one item signed.
For everyone’s safety, attendees will pass through metal detectors upon entry to the Instagram Meet & Greet Hall. Small backpacks are permitted in the hall but will be subject to search. Alcohol, drugs, weapons, and items that can be mistaken as weapons are expressly prohibited, as per our Code of Conduct. If you bring a gift for a Featured Creator, please leave it unwrapped and visible, and please do not bring gifts of food unless they’re factory sealed. Use your best judgment regarding what kinds of things you bring to give to a Featured Creator — most of them travel to get to VidCon and won’t be able to take, for example, a six-foot-tall teddy bear back with them!

The discussion starts with why viewers use a particular digital platform, then talks about what makes some videos more inherently clickable than others, what type of cues signal viewers to stay engaged with a piece of content, and ultimately psychological factors that drive them to take additional steps, from liking a video to following a creator to an off-platform landing page. YEAR IN REVIEW
O
nline video in 2018 really does make strange bedfellows. I am writing this just after returning from “Newfront Week” in New York City, where top online video networks and platforms talked to press and advertisers about how wonderful they are, and all the cool things they plan to do over the next year.
The centerpiece of YouTube’s “Brandcast” presentation? Trevor Noah, TV star and host of the Daily Show on Comedy Central – which is owned by Viacom. Meanwhile, at Viacom’s presentation (if you didn’t hear, the big media company bought VidCon earlier this year), Viacom Digital Studios chief Kelly Day deep-sixed an opening video featuring Noah, opting instead for one rich in online video stars including Liza Koshy and JoJo Siwa. Back in the early days of VidCon, online video was dismissed as the unfashionable little cousin of television. But more and more, YouTube wants to be TV, while television companies are embracing the ethos of online video in their digital and traditional programming. And popular online video stars have made the transition to success in traditional media, including books, television, and on-stage performances, while one of the biggest new stars on YouTube is popular movie star Will Smith! Everywhere you look, the lines are blurring. But as quickly as they blur, they also come into stark relief. The past year has seen a dramatic upswell of new places to build online video success, and these platforms are as different from TV and YouTube as they are from each other.
6/20 - 6/23
Take LinkedIn, for instance. The popular professional social network rolled out video nearly a year ago, and we’ve seen a host of new creators embrace the platform and find success. Pinterest is rapidly moving to embrace creator-driven video, and while Twitch has moved into traditional media, its game-streaming bread and butter is as opaque to the over 30 set as Ze Frank was to traditional TV execs in 2006.
VIDCON 2018
So yes, TV is looking more like traditional online video, while traditional online video is starting to feel more like TV. But with so many new platforms building so many new formats and ways to create community and success, it still feels like the beginning of a wonderful video-rich future.
70
And all these new platforms create so many new opportunities for talented creators to create and thrive. At this year’s VidCon, we’re not only the most inclusive and safest space for every person, we’re also the most diverse celebration of all video content, platforms, and creators. This year, the top creators on LinkedIn will rub elbows and share insights with the biggest game streamers, Facebook’s biggest live video stars, the top YouTubers, and the most followed creators on Instagram, Snapchat, Musical.ly, and more. Oh yeah, and we’ll have a few bona-fide TV stars, as well, who have crossed the blurry lines into success in online video too. Thanks for coming to VidCon. I know this year will be the best ever, and I also know that we couldn’t do it without you. Each and every one of you are the reason we work so hard all year to bring you this wonderful festival, conference, and summit, all rolled up into one. No matter what platform, what genre, or what community you belong to, we’re so excited you’re here. Have a great time! Jim Louderback, General Manager, VidCon

THANK YOU
T
his is my fourth VidCon US, and this is what I still can’t figure out about this event:
How do you guys pick who to watch and love at a given moment? How do you decide what to see or do or eat? How often am I supposed to change my shoes to make sure my feet are usable the next day? And where do I purchase a time-turner? But this is my fourth VidCon US, and this is what I know for sure about this event: It’s a beast, but it is a worthy beast, and I’m proud and excited to tackle it every day all year. Working alongside the absolutely incredible events team at VidCon is an extraordinary honor, and I owe them my confidence and almost certainly my sanity. Special thanks to Colin for giving me a clear, sturdy path to follow, to Michael, Jim, and Hank, for inspiring us to go bigger and brighter each year, and to Amy, for being my second brain and second heart when one of each is not enough. To Monica, Wendi, Celine, Travis, Valerie, Rodney, Adrienne, Natalie, Nick, Silvia, Fiona, Chrystina, Alison, Duncan, Ashe, Gerardo, Rita, and Marie Ann: you all rule so hard.
Most importantly, I know that it is valuable and meaningful to the humans who bring their online lives into an IRL space with us for the week. New friendships are forged, old ones are reignited, and palpable joy is felt and heard over the entire event. People are seen — really seen — for the first time at VidCon, and the value of these communities absolutely cannot be understated. So thank you to the fans, who give us a reason to make this thing every year. Thank you to the young people who write down “YouTuber” when someone asks what they want to be when they grow up, and thank you to the parents of these young people for believing in your children. Thank you to the Facebook mods, to the Patreon patrons, to the commenters and likers of videos. You are the dynamic, essential core of our weird planet and I love you for it. Let’s do a VidCon! Julia Maes Executive Producer, VidCon US
6/20 - 6/23
VidCon is vibrant and diverse in a way no other event I’ve been to is. Thank you to the special guests who lend their expertise and energy to the panels, performances, meetups, and whatever other weird things I’ve forgotten about; this event would not exist if you didn’t all have YouTube or Instagram or Vine (RIP) accounts, and it especially would not exist if you weren’t so careful and thoughtful with your communities who come out to see you here. Thank you also to the sponsors, especially our title spon-
sor YouTube, who help provide such an amazing array of experiences for our attendees and guests, and to Brent, Natalie, Chloe, and Bri at UTA for your excellent work on the sponsorship team. And to the Anaheim Convention Center for saying yes to our increasingly wild requests year after year.
