WELCOME Hey, Let’s start out by recognizing that I am irrationally excited about video on the internet. I recognize that Shakespeare is great and that Gutenberg’s moveable type printing press revolutionized the world. I know objectively that most people still consume most of their video content on televisions (as hard as this is to believe). And I’m aware that we are all floating on a mote of dust in an infinite universe, so what does it all mean anyway? But I think online video is the most important thing that has ever happened. Of course, it isn’t, but I don’t care. The first time I watched a large-scale YouTube collab, I knew I was watching history in the making. I go to visit my friends shooting their sketch videos, and I see every prop as something that should be in a museum. I know enough about the evolution of media to see that things are changing fast, and it’s only just beginning. That, of course, results in some pains. It’s hard to know what economic models creators can depend on, and sometimes the shining light of possibility blinds us to what is OK (and not OK) to do to get views. But VidCon exists not just so we can celebrate this remarkable creative culture, but also so that we can face problems like that head-on. But deep down, this online video is uncomplicated. It is, maybe, the most uncomplicated content has ever been. If someone can make something and someone else wants to watch it, it can find life. And what we have always strived to do at this event is make it clear who creates the value in this industry. It isn’t the platforms where the content is hosted; it isn’t the advertisers who help turn value into dollars; and it isn’t even the creators who make the content. It’s us, all of us — the people who love it. Whether we’re watching ads, buying merch, sharing with friends, subscribing to YouTube Red, or funding through Patreon, the value starts with the real life humans who are in this building. As a creator, it can be easy to forget that the numbers on my videos are real humans. And I think the industry all too commonly sees views as a commodity rather than humanity. So I’d like to thank you for bringing yourself and your knowledge and your interest to VidCon, but more than that, thank you for bringing it to the content and the creators you care about, because without you, none of this would exist. Hank Green

FAQ How do I figure out what’s going on at VidCon?
There are multiple ways to find out what’s happening around you at VidCon. You can look through our agenda in the guide you are holding now or check our website at vidcon.com/full-agenda. Or you can download our app! Just search VidCon in the app store. The app is your one-stop shop to be totally in the know of what’s happening in the VidCon world. To be super duper up to date, you can also follow us on Twitter @VidCon.
What does my badge give me access to?
Community Badge holders have access to all content taking place on the main floor of the convention center and the Awesomeness Festival Area. This includes four halls filled with panels, Q&As, live gaming, expo booths, concerts, and more. Check the Community Track schedule on page 24 to see what’s what! Creator Badge holders have access to the second floor of the convention center, which includes Creator Track keynotes, lounges, workshops, panels and receptions. Creator badge holders also have access to everything Community badge holders have access to EXCEPT the go90 Meet & Greet Hall. Head to page 46 to see all that’s in store for the Creator Track! Industry Badge holders have access to the third floor of the convention center, which will include Industry Track keynotes, workshops, lounges, panels and receptions. On top of that, Industry badge holders have access to all events happening within the convention center including the go90 Meet & Greet Hall (but only if they participated in the Meet & Greet Lottery). See page 60 for the full Industry Track schedule.
Where is the thing I’m trying to go to?
You’ll find a map of the whole convention center and surrounding areas on page 4. Each agenda item will have a room number or name next to it, so cross-reference that with the map and you’re good to go!
8
Is there WiFi?
Yes, WiFi will be available at the convention center. However, with 20,000+ people trying to connect at once, it may not be the best. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do to make it better, but we’re sure you will figure out something that will work.
How do I share my experience at VidCon 2017? Tag everything with #VidConUS. That includes your videos, facebooks, instagrams, tweets, twitches, pins, tumbls, snaps, and chats.
How can I meet my favorite YouTuber?
The Meet & Greet Lottery has already been drawn, and there isn’t a way to get into meet & greet lines without the proper wristband credentials. Remember, our Featured Creators will also be participating in content throughout VidCon, such as panels, Q&As, and other fun stuff. So don’t be sad if you didn’t draw your favorite creator in the Meet & Greet Lottery. Chances are you will still get to see them!
Where can I score a delicious meal?
Don’t let the hanger set in! There are plenty of options around the convention center, including a bunch of great food trucks in the Awesomeness Festival Area as well as some food court options within the convention center.
Who are the folks in the different colored VidCon t-shirts?
Those are our VidCon staff, security, and volunteers. They’re here to help the event go as smoothly as possible! Please be kind to them and listen attentively when they tell you to do something.
I’m a parent/guardian. What should I do all weekend?
If you have purchased a VidCon ticket, you can spend time in the Parents’ Lounge in Hall D or hang out with your child and go to content to learn more about this whole Online Video thing. (If your child is under the age of 13, you must accompany them at all times.) If you don’t have a VidCon badge, you will not be permitted inside the event.
Where is the Lost and Found?
If you have found a lost item, please bring it to the Info Desk, located in the lobby between Halls B & C. If you have lost an item, please go to the Info Desk to see if it has been returned or contact the Anaheim Convention Center’s Lost & Found. They can be reached by phone at (714) 7658950.
My wristband was damaged or lost. What do I do?
Damaged, broken, defaced, or lost wristbands will not be honored or replaced! The wristbands are designed to withstand whatever damage you can manage to throw at them and will last through the weekend without a doubt. If you lose them or they are damaged, you will not be able to attend your meet & greets. This is no joke!
But, wait, what if I lost my badge?
If you lose your badge, it will not be replaced! Without your badge you will not have access to the convention center! Don’t lose your badge! This is your final warning!
It is vital to us that VidCon be a safe place for all attendees. VidCon is a private event, and people who mistreat or disrespect other people will be removed and not allowed re-entry for the duration of the event. VidCon reserves the right to permanently ban attendees and guests who do not comply with the code of conduct, including for future events put on by VidCon LLC. Please use good judgment and be respectful, as we’ll dislike throwing you out almost as much as you’ll dislike being thrown out.
ACCESS
Purchasing a VidCon pass does not guarantee that you will meet a particular Featured Creator, and if you are only coming to VidCon to meet one particular person, you should consider not purchasing a ticket. We do not clear rooms between events. All activities have limited capacity, so even though your badge is required to access all activities, it does not guarantee you access to any particular activity. It is physically impossible for Featured Creators to meet every attendee. All meet & greets are of a limited nature, and your badge does not guarantee autographs or photos in the go90 Meet & Greet Hall.
FEATURED CREATORS
The Featured Creators who participate in VidCon are excited to see attendees, but please be respectful. They need to be safe and ensure all attendees are safe while moving around the event, so do not run at or crowd around creators in public walkways, near escalators, or around doorways. Creators also need to take a break at their hotel, so attempting to follow them to their rooms, riding the hotel elevators, waiting in the hotel lobby, or any other similar behavior is prohibited.
HARASSMENT
Disorderly conduct includes (but is not limited to) any behavior that is illegal, unsafe, disruptive, discriminatory or causes excessive discomfort to our attendees or guests. If someone doesn’t want to talk to you, don’t keep talking to them. If you do not have permission to touch someone, do not touch them. VidCon loves surprising and interesting unplanned activities, but sometimes things you think are cool might make other people extremely uncomfortable or be very dangerous. Pranks often make for some great videos, but it makes us really sad when they are emotionally or physically hurtful, so don’t do that. If we hear about anyone pranking in ways that are disruptive to the well-being of our guests or attendees, there’s a pretty strong chance it will get the prankster kicked out. Also, please keep in mind that we are sharing these facilities with others, and it is our duty to be friendly neighbors. Not everyone “gets” this thing we are all into. Let’s show everyone that we are a positive and friendly group.
CODE OF CONDUCT IMAGE RELEASE
This is the part where we go ahead and state the obvious… VidCon is an event produced by, for, and about online video enthusiasts. As such, VidCon may be recorded or reproduced by VidCon, its designees, and/or attending participants. By registering to be in attendance at VidCon, you hereby authorize VidCon, its designees, and/or attending participants to record, transcribe, modify, reproduce, perform, display, transmit and distribute in any form and for any purpose any such recordings of VidCon. By registering for VidCon you hereby release VidCon, its designees, and/or its attending participants from any and all claims it or its employees or agents may possess, now or in the future, in connection with such activities.
MINORS
All minors under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Parents or adult supervisors of minors are responsible for the actions of minors they are supervising. Minors may be prohibited from certain areas due to the sale of alcohol at certain locations.
LIABILITY
You assume any and all risks occurring before, during, or after VidCon. You release VidCon and the Anaheim Convention Center and their agents, licensees, assignees, and their respective affiliates and representatives from any related claims.
VIDCON TERMS OF USE
All VidCon attendees and guests are required to adhere to this Code of Conduct. The VidCon badge, which is required for admittance to all VidCon activities, is a revocable license. VidCon or its designees may, without refund, revoke this license for noncompliance with these terms or for disorderly conduct.
LISTEN TO STAFF
All VidCon attendees and badge purchasers must adhere to the instructions of all VidCon employees and agents, all security employees and agents, the staff of the Anaheim Convention Center, and any and all law enforcement personnel.
PROHIBITIONS
Alcohol, drugs, weapons, and items that can be mistaken as weapons are expressly prohibited, even if they are part of a costume. Backpacks and other similar containers are subject to search and may be prohibited. Unlawful sale or attempted sale of badges will result in the revocation of that badge without refund.

DOs & DON’Ts DO have a great time! There are literally actually hundreds (or thousands?) of things to do this year at VidCon, and we want you to experience as many of them as possible! Explore the convention center and Awesomeness Festival area! We have lots of brand new nighttime programming this year, too! DON’T freak out. Well... feel free to freak out, but do it in a way that doesn’t freak other people out. By which we mean: be considerate! We are people of the internet, and people of the internet are oftentimes a shy, easily overwhelmed bunch. Please take this into consideration and show common courtesy to other attendees and Featured Creators by being respectful of personal space and others’ feelings. Walk, don’t run. Be sensible and safe in your enthusiasm! DO come prepared. Make a gameplan for what you want to see and do at VidCon. Our mobile app lets you customize and save your personal schedule, so be sure to download it and take some time to pick out those can’t-miss panels and activities. Or thoroughly peruse the guide you’ve got in your hands this very instant! Also: wear comfortable shoes. Put on some sunscreen. Bring snacks. And... DON’T forget to eat! Or sleep! Take care of yourself. We know that VidCon is jam-packed with fun times and a dozen awesome things are always happening forever, but food and slumber are very much required for you to continue to properly function as a human being (and to have the best time possible). There are a ton of
10
options for food in and around the convention center. Plan breaks into your schedule for meals and rest. Get some shut eye. And most importantly — HYDRATE, FEEL GREAT. DO make friends. We’re here because we REALLY love the same things. So take this weird and unique opportunity to meet new people — you’ve already got a lot in common with them. New friends make waiting in line THE BEST TIME EVER! DON’T miss out on the many neat, secret-ish activities VidCon has to offer. VidCon Quest, the VidCon app’s Scavenger Hunt, photo booths, a caricature artist, a roaming dance troupe, community art walls… who knows what else? DO remember that YouTubers are human. Like normal, regular, humany people with humany fears and insecurities. So treat them with respect. Be cool! And considerate! VidCon can easily be an overwhelming time for anyone, Featured Creators included. If you see someone you’re a fan of out and about in the convention center or elsewhere, be polite in your interactions. If they look like they’re in a hurry or on a mission, maybe right then is not the best time to talk. Common sense and courtesy are king! DON’T do anything that would force us to have to kick you out. We really do not want to do that. Be smart and have a good time. Think about how your actions impact others. If you do something not so smart, we will be sad. Things that are not very smart include: harassing other
people, damaging or destroying property, stalking, trespassing, anything illegal, and so on. Also: pranks often make for some great videos, but when they are emotionally or physically hurtful/damaging, that is not okay. If we hear about anyone pranking in ways that are disruptive to the well-being of our guests or attendees, there’s a pretty strong chance it will get the prankster booted out of VidCon. DO let us know if you see any not-smart things happening. We want VidCon to be a safe space for everyone. If you witness someone doing something that’s not safe, please tell us. There are volunteers and staff everywhere who want to help, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you see anything worrying or dangerous. You can also call our 24-hour emergency hotline at (657) 203-9695. DON’T feed the trolls. There may be protesters outside the convention center. Do not engage! Engaging makes them more protest-y! Ignoring them is the way to go -- what they want is a reaction, so do not give them cause, reason, or opportunity to debate. DO dole out the high fives! Thumbs up all around! Thank a volunteer. Compliment a stranger. Be rad. Positivity ftw. And lastly... DON’T forget to be awesome!

There are two types of meet & greets at VidCon. Please check the signage & listen to staff instructions to help speed the process along.
MEET & GREET HALL
Professional Photographs: You’ll be given a card with a website and an ID code after your photo is taken. You can then go to that website, enter your code, and it will take you straight to your photos! Sorry, no selfies at this type of session! Some creators may allow autographs - please listen to security staff for further instructions. Selfies and autographs: Pretty self-explanatory! Please respect a limit of up to one selfie and/or one item signed.
Creators want to meet and talk to the people who love their content, and the people who love their content want to meet them. At the same time, we want you to enjoy all that VidCon has to offer, rather than spend too much time waiting in line! All meet & greets have been ticketed ahead of time through a randomized lottery that took place in May. The lottery has already been drawn, and there isn’t a way to get into the go90 Meet & Greet Hall if you don’t have the appropriate wristband. You received a wristband at registration for each session you were selected for in the lottery. Damaged or defaced wristbands will not be honored, and lost wristbands will not be replaced. They’re specifically designed to withstand showers and parties and all kinds of stuff, so if you lose it or it is damaged, you’re out of luck. You will not get into your meet & greet session if you don’t have it. You can line up for each session ONE HOUR BEFORE the scheduled start time through ONE HALF HOUR AFTER the scheduled start time. If you show up earlier, security will tell you to go explore the amazing Expo Hall and come back later. Once inside the hall, match the number on your wristband to the meet & greet booth numbers hanging above each line and voila! Don’t forget to say hello to the person next to you in the queue zone - chances are you have a lot in common! Please note: some creators are doing several sessions during VidCon, but you will only be allowed at the specifically scheduled time on your wristband. BAG CHECK INFORMATION For everyone’s safety, attendees will pass through metal detectors upon entry to the go90 Meet & Greet Hall. THURSDAY | 10:25 AM - 10:45 AM Research Debut: Viewing Sessions: What They Mean to Creators and Advertisers Industry Keynote Stage
Introduced By: Ivana Kirkbride (Chief Content Officer, Go 90 Verizon) Robert Davis (Ogilvy)
When it comes to digital-first video, the focus is shifting from looking at “sessions” rather than “views” — particularly since users tend to graze and binge. Thus, instead of thinking of the online video world as short video experiences (with ads attached), we need to consider a user’s entire viewing session in which many pieces of content and ads are consumed. Ogilvy Research conducted a broad study during the spring of 2017 to learn more about what happens during a viewing session. What leads users to longer sessions? What makes them stop? Where are ads most impactful in a session? Where are ads a negative presence? How does subscription users’ behavior (think YouTube RED) change vs. ad supported users? Ogilvy is debuting the results of this groundbreaking survey for the first time right here at VidCon. Don’t miss this important session!

This session draws on lessons from brands like Hillshire Snacking, Schick, Skintimate and Stoli, detailing how they achieved TV-like reach and engagement with a mobile-only s trategy. Learn the secrets of how creative content optimization, mobile-specific word selection, and cost-effective placement strategies can dramatically increase both impressions and engagement rates.

At its best, programmatic advertising enables advertisers to buy media more efficiently — helping them to craft more sophisticated and targeted campaigns at the best possible prices. But when ads are placed across more than two million websites, videos, and apps in the Google Display Network, there’s always a risk that an ad will show up before or next to hateful, offensive, and derogatory content. Recently, a number of big advertisers dropped out of YouTube and the Google Display Network when their ads started running next to content that didn’t align with their values. This is relevant to every single ad tech company that buys inventory at scale that very, very targeted at low costs. All of this has triggered a conversation in the advertising industry around hard questions like, “How do we start valuing context and quality?” and “How do we ensure brand safety in a programmatic world?”

INDUSTRY TRACK FRIDAY | 4:00 PM - 4:45 PM Technology Tsunami! How VR, Digital Distribution, Virtual Actors, and Collaborative Tools Are Transforming Hollywood Industry Keynote Stage Moderator: Ashu Garg (General Partner - Foundation Capital) Doug Knopper (CEO - Freewheel) Steve Raymond (CEO - 8i) Mihir Shah (Co-Founder and CEO - Immersv)
The digital revolution has had a radically transformative impact on the entertainment industry. The value of traditional celebrities has been declining over the past decade and may fall precipitously with Generation Z, for whom the biggest celebrities are YouTubers, not movie stars. The distribution model has also been upended with power shifting to players like Netflix. Will this lead to an irrevocable restructuring of the business of movies and TV — one which cuts out middlemen like traditional studios? Lastly, with the rise of VR/AR, will human actors make way for virtual ones? The consequence of these trends is that, in a decade, the Hollywood of old may well look more like the Silicon Valley venture capital model.

However, brand clients often find it hard to get precise KPIs of their campaign beyond superficial impressions, and when they do, can be disappointed by its poor reach and targeting. A data-driven approach to both selection of the influencer, and then to paid amplification of the organic reach of the video, yields spectacular and measurable improvements for brand content operations.

YEAR IN REVIEW
The past year in online video has been one of consolidation, new launches, and a fascinating blurring of the lines between traditional and digital.
On the consolidation side, sometimes it seems like the four horsemen of the streampocalypse just keep getting bigger and bigger. Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple consolidated their hold on digital media, while a second tier of industry leaders – led by Netflix and Hulu, but including AT&T, Verizon and Comcast – made big changes to grow and build relevance. But even as these megaliths expanded their footprint, new upstarts grabbed viewers, attention, and fans. Snapchat and musical. ly lead that pack, which also includes VICE, BuzzFeed, Jungle Creations, and many more. Virtual Reality dropped from the overhyped heights to fall back to earth as headset sales couldn’t match the lofty projections. Despite the slump, though, VR remains the next great medium, and the formats, platforms, and shows being built today will be among the new media elite in five years. Augmented Reality took VR’s place as the most overhyped new development – I’ll most likely be writing about its crash in my “looking back” for VidCon 2018 or 2019.
There’s a place for live, but in the end, it must be engaging and narrative-based, and it needs a beginning, middle and end – just like any other successful show. You can do live and reach a small audience because, let’s face it, some people will watch anything. To build a business, however, you need a big audience, which means planning, production, and pacing. Finally, this was the year where online video and television became increasingly arcane terms. It’s all just moving pictures on glowing rectangles these days, and where it comes from, who distributes it, how long it runs, and how it’s consumed matters less and less. YouTube – with Red and an algorithmic focus on watch-time and frequency – feels more like TV. What’s the difference between “F is for Family” (on Netflix) and “The Simpsons” or “Family Guy” (on FOX)? Is a show on go90 any different than one on Hulu, Amazon, or A&E? And with YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and musical.ly commissioning shows from cable and broadcast networks, the lines got even blurrier. Even sports got weird, as ESPN shed subscribers like a rattlesnake in a sulphur bath while parent company Disney snapped up a third of Major League Baseball’s MLB Advanced Media streaming division.
The advertising market, as well, has been battered and bruised. Early 2017 saw the programmatic placement of ads under attack, as the media “discovered” that some video ads were playing next to objectionable content on YouTube and in other places – and many, many brands pulled their ads from YouTube, at least temporarily. Despite the breathless bloviations from the press, this is not a new problem, as agencies have struggled with improper placement of banners, pre-rolls, and all types of advertising since the days of the first web page. Regardless, the “adpocalypse” is real, and revenue has dropped for many, many popular channels.
We’re in year two or three of a golden age of visual media – some call it peak TV. Consumption patterns continue to evolve, with binge viewing replacing destination viewing, and attention and affinity beginning to matter more than views and eyeballs. We’re inventing new digital media that promises to be more engaging, more entertaining, and more emotionally intense than anything before. It’s a great time to be a viewer, a great time to be a creator, a great time to be in business. As long, of course, as it isn’t all eaten up by those four horsemen I mentioned at the beginning.
Influencers became the latest overhyped buzzword, as many companies looked to those with real or imagined communities on social platforms to lend their voice, image, and aura to help burnish their brands. Unfortunately, too many influencer agencies blindly tried to cash in on the gold rush while too many supposed influencers artificially juiced their subscriber and follower numbers to snag their own piece of the pie. And in the end, many brands still couldn’t understand the difference between a pre-roll and a meaningful integration – leaving a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.
Jim Louderback, Editorial Director Industry Track
This time last year, live video was on everyone’s mind. Facebook was pushing it mercilessly, and it seemed like every other creator on Facebook was going live early and often. But as the year unfolded, we all ended up spending too much time watching boring live streams where nothing – or very little – ever seemed to happen. I even experimented with a live feed of paint drying, and it was significantly more engaging than 94.3% of every other Facebook Live video. I made that statistic up, but you believed it, didn’t you?

THANK YOU There are a lot of people who work all year long to pull off a three day event. As you might imagine, that can be a pretty stressful job, and the team(s) we have working on this event are, as far as I can tell, the best possible group of people one could collect. We’re so lucky to have found such great support, and I am so extremely grateful to all of the people who pour their time and skill into this event. So first, thank you to the VidCon staff, who are the people who really make this event happen. Michael, Colin, Monica, Wendi, Celine, Amy, Julia, Alison, Silvia, Duncan, Adrienne, Nick, Natalie, Travis, Valerie, Rodney, Ashe, and Rita. Just as importantly, though, are all of our special guests and performers and panelists and speakers and moderators who come together to spur the important conversations and create the magical moments that make VidCon special. Thank you all for the extremely valuable gift of your time. And, of course, a bunch of other people too. To Jim Louderback, whose expertise is invaluable to VidCon’s Industry Track. To Chrystina Woody Train for all of your help understanding the complex and wonderful world of beauty and lifestyle on YouTube. To Brent, Natalie, and Chloe at UTA for your amazing work on the VidCon sponsorship team. To YouTube for being VidCon’s title sponsor, and also the reason any of this exists at all. And to all of our sponsors for helping make VidCon such a truly fantastic experience (and helping us keep our costs down). To Gerardo who makes stages and screens beautiful by doing things that I do not understand. To Laura, Jara, and the RA Consulting team, who help keep VidCon safe and simple for us all. To Monica Vera and the Anaheim Convention Center. To the awesome facilitators and cheerleaders with Visit Anaheim. To all of the hotels in Anaheim. Running a hotel next to a convention center must be weird, because one weekend it’s dentists and the next weekend it’s… us. To all of our amazing volunteers who give us their passion and time and skill to make the event better for everyone. To all of the parents who came out with their children, despite having no idea what was going on. To all my fellow creators for making great things and great communities. To Martha and Sara for being the first two people to buy tickets for VidCon 2010, for which I am eternally grateful. To Melissa Anelli and Stephanie Dornhelm for making it happen in 2010. To Carver Wright for all of his help. To my family for understanding (or at least humoring) my obsessions. To every single person who finds value and depth in this community.
