Dear Reader,

As we head into the lengthening of the light of spring, and people are out and about enjoying strolls with friends and family, we are seeing both familiar and new faces come into the store. We're so happy when we see everyone chatting in the aisles, sharing a laugh. It reminds us that the grace, kindness, and joy we share with each other is the true backbone of this community. What has really gotten us through some of our challenges is the gratitude we have received from our customers. When we've hosted an event, we've had attendees tell us it's been the best time they've had in months. When we've helped pick out just the right gift, folks share that it's one of the reasons they return to the store again and again. Sometimes when we're battling supply chain issues or deadly weather events or worldwide pandemics, it's easy to forget that it's each of you, as individuals, who create this beautiful mosaic with us. And we have such gratitude for the gratitude you share with us, Dear Reader.

Dirty Dan

Murder Mystery 2022

April 23 & April 24 10am -5pm

10am-1:30pm

The Case of the Crushed Clown Welcome to the second annual Dirty Dan* Mystery Weekend and The Case of the Crushed Clown! “It is with grievance beyond words that I must announce today, April 23, that we found the missing clown underneath a bale of hay on Harris Avenue,” announced Mayor Wilson. Thus begins the quest to find the murderer, their motive, and their method. Read the newspaper from front to back. You’ll also be given a map with locations where you can pick up printed clues to help you solve the mystery. All of the clue locations and the scene of the crime are within a half mile of Fairhaven Village Green. The suspect photos will be in the “Fairhaven Observer.” As you walk around the village collecting your clues, you will encounter some of the suspects (i.e. characters) described in the newspaper. You never know who might have valuable information. But can you trust them all? Hmmmm, the real “criminal” is out there and they have every reason to lead you in the wrong direction! When you think you have figured out who and how, enter your solution on the official ballot. Place your completed form in one of the designated ballot boxes. Correct ballot solutions will be placed in a drawing for Grand Prizes ranging from Weekend Getaways and Merchant Gift Certificates to Dirty Dan Mystery Memorabilia. All the other ‘incorrect ballots’ will be placed in a drawing for other prizes. Village Books and Paper Dreams is proud to be the title sponsor of this fun event.

Rena Priest, Poet Laureate We love when our local folks receive statewide attention and we couldn’t be happier for Rena Priest, our new Washington State Poet Laureate. Fairhaven Events Reimagined

Popular Fairhaven events include Winterfest, the annual Sidewalk Sale, and the Fairhaven Festival. One of our new Fairhaven favorites is the Dirty Dan Murder Mystery scavenger hunt and puzzle where amateur sleuths solve a scandalous death by reading between the lines and interviewing suspicious characters in the village. Join us again on April 23 & 24 to join in the fun (and maybe spot a Village Books owner in disguise!) See page 5 for more information.

Erin Joins Us as Manager

As you can imagine, our stores have several moving parts. How do we keep it all going? With excellent leadership, of course. We were glad to have Erin join us as a staff member and then even more excited to have her promoted to our manager position. She helps to train new staff members and has started some great initiatives — including introducing the Employee Assistance Program and Ridwell to the store. Thanks Erin!

#2

Giving Tree and Sumas Elementary Generosity

Among other challenges created by the pandemic, one of the ones that touched us was the increased need for the support of our customers via our Giving Tree program. In addition to some of our nonprofit community partners who saw increased need, our community (including one of own staff members) lost homes and were displaced by the floods in November. We were honored to partner with Sumas Elementary to help restock the library books lost in the flood via a wish list on our website and donations at our registers, including extraordinarily generous and kind donations of $100, $500, and $1,000 towards the library. We thank all of you for your continued kindness.

PIROUETTING – Because We Are SO OVER Pivoting

Though we’ve all had to navigate new normals, we here at Village Books and Paper Dreams have had to scramble, shuffle, dream, curse, and will our way through the last two years. We want to make sure we’re providing you, our devoted readers, with just as many new products, literary events, and shopping experiences as before while navigating broken supply chains, a changing retail landscape, and ever-evolving health and safety guidelines. We’ve had some shining success and some regrettable losses. We’ve had to examine our buying decisions, guesstimate foot traffic, and learn new platforms. All the while, we’re trying to keep staff and customers safe and healthy. We thank everyone — staff, customers, readers, writers — for growing with us and keeping us here for our 42nd year.

SPRING

GIVING

Village Books & Paper Dreams Owner & Gift Buyer Kelly Evert Shares Some of Her Favorite ShoppingSeasonal WithFinds Kelly

“Hope springs eternal.” ~ Alexander Pope, 1732 I’m very hopeful that spring brings all of us some form of reprieve from our worries and concerns. Relish this chance to see new life in every bloom, as the sun warms us and draws us outside to enjoy nature. As we celebrate the new season, we also celebrate mothers and all they do to nurture us. A Mothers Day celebration with beautiful tableware would certainly put a smile on anyone’s face. I absolutely adore Hester & Cook, a company with a sophisicated yet whimiscal style for any table setting. Hester & Cook started in the home basement of husband-and-wife team, Robbie and Angie Hester Cook. What began as Robbie’s inspired idea of crafting a vintage doorknob into a bottle stopper soon became the company’s first product. Today they are best known for paper placemat pads and table runners. We have a collection of table paper goods that will fit with any décor, from flowers and topiary to a cheerful circus theme.

After setting the table for a spring celebration, don’t forget the food. Charcuterie boards have become popular recently and for good reason! Especially in the northwest, eating dainty provisions strewn atop a piece of wood seems like just the best idea ever! Special pieces of cheese, olives, cured meats, and olive oils (visit Drizzle next door in Fairhaven for some of these yummies) will fulfill everybody’s cravings. We have a collection of charcuterie boards of different sizes and styles to make a beautiful centerpiece. Add a bit of moss and a cute placecard as a label and voila, a perfect meal! When it comes to gift-giving during the spring, a mug, bowl, or pretty pottery with a succulent or paperwhite makes a great gift that can bloom over and over and a container that can be used again and again for years.

Shopping With Kelly!

Candles and cards are always a great gift year-round. Seedlings is an intriguing new line of paper goods and candles. The company was started by three sisters who wanted to create a line of beautiful paper products. Throughout their line, they have incorporated seed paper in packaging wherever possible. Plantable seed paper is a biodegradable eco-paper that is made with post-consumer materials and embedded with seeds. When the paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper composts away. Additionally, their candle line is hand-poured in the USA and is 100% indigenously sourced essential oil and soy wax with a special energy stone. Something we could all use! On behalf of all of us, we wish you a beautiful spring full of color, family, and fellowship. Kelly Evert Owner of an Independent Business Building Community Since 1980

New Fiction The Love of My Life

The Unsinkable Greta James

available in March, hardcover, Pamela Dorman Books

available in March, hardcover, Ballantine Books

by Jennifer E. Smith

by Rosie Walsh

Everything Emma has told her husband Leo about herself is a lie. When she suffers a serious illness, her husband copes by researching and writing about his wife’s life. But as he starts to unravel the truth, he discovers the woman he loves doesn’t really exist. When the very darkest moments of Emma’s past finally emerge, she must somehow prove to Leo that she really is the woman he always thought she was.

"I loved traveling to Alaska with the wild and tender Greta, and found her escape from her life as a literal rock star an addictive journey. Each evening, I looked forward to opening the novel and rejoining Greta's adventure, and will miss her — and her music--now that I've turned the final beautiful page." –Amanda Eyre Ward, bestselling author of The Jetsetters

Lessons in Chemistry

French Braid

by Bonnie Garmus

by Anne Tyler

available in April, hardcover, Doubleday

available in March, hardcover, Knopf

Elizabeth Zott is a scientist whose career takes a detour when she becomes the star of a beloved TV cooking show. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.

Full of heartbreak and hilarity, French Braid is classic Anne Tyler: a stirring, uncannily insightful novel of tremendous warmth and humor that illuminates the kindnesses and cruelties of our daily lives, the impossibility of breaking free from those who love us, and how close — yet how unknowable — every family is to itself.

To Paradise

by Hanya Yanagihara

Memphis

available now, hardcover, Doubleday

by Tara M. Stringfellow

To Paradise is a fin de siècle novel of marvelous literary effect, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love — partners, lovers, children, friends, family and even our fellow citizens — and the pain that ensues when we cannot.

available in April, hardcover, The Dial Press

Shop 24/7 at villagebooks.com The Sign for Home by Blair Fell

available in April, hardcover, Atria

Memphis spans three generations of North women while jumping back and forth between their timelines throughout the 1900s and early 2000s. They work throughout their lives to break the cycles of trauma and abuse as Black women in America, by finding strength in themselves and each other. Stringfellow pulls from her own family's history to create wonderful stories for each character with rich imagery that kept me coming back for more. –Kiana

Romance

Arlo Dilly is young, handsome and eager to meet the right girl. He also happens to be DeafBlind, a Jehovah’s Witness, and under the strict guardianship of his controlling uncle. His chances of finding someone to love seem slim to none. And yet, it happened once before: many years ago, at a boarding school for the Deaf, Arlo met the love of his life. But tragedy struck, and their love was lost forever. Or so Arlo thought. Arlo convinces a small band of misfit friends to set off on a journey to learn the truth. After all, who better to bring on this quest than his gay interpreter and wildly inappropriate Belgian best friend?

New Fiction The Final Case by David Guterson

available now, hardcover, Knopf

In his first novel in a decade, Guterson profoundly explores the complexities of relationships between parents and children, the tension between conflicting beliefs, and the struggle to live a meaningful life in this homage to his father. He also demonstrates that the merits of fiction reside in the truths the author conveys rather than the facts. As with all of his novels, I came away feeling wiser and more empathetic. –Paul

Recitatif : A Story by Toni Morrison

available now, hardcover, Knopf

A beautiful, arresting story about race and the relationships that shape us through life by the legendary Nobel Prize winner — for the first time in a beautifully produced stand-alone edition, with an introduction by Zadie Smith. “A puzzle of a story, then—a game…. When [Morrison] called Recitatif an ‘experiment’ she meant it. The subject of the experiment is the reader.” —Zadie Smith

Maria, Maria

by Marie Benedict

Rosalind Franklin knows if she just takes one more X-ray picture — one more after thousands — she can unlock the building blocks of life. Never again will she have to listen to her colleagues complain about her, especially Maurice Wilkins who'd rather conspire about genetics with James Watson and Francis Crick than work alongside her. Then it finally happens — the double helix structure of DNA reveals itself to her with perfect clarity. But what happens next, Rosalind could have never predicted.

Spring 2022

by Marytza K. Rubio available in April, hardcover, Liveright Publishing

This short story fiction novel tells the story of Marias, maybe even all Marias, as the authors states. It follows three women as they move through the world, taking challenges day by day. Rubio showcases a powerful feminine voice while beautifully folding in Mexican-American magic and culture. You really won't be able to put the book down it's so enticing to read! –Ronnie

New Fiction When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill

available in May, hardcover, Doubleday

Well, here it is. Easily my favorite book of 2022 thus far, Kelly Barnhill’s first work of adult fiction hits all the right notes for me. She had me at the Great Mass Dragoning of 1955 where over 600,000 women spontaneously turned into dragons, scorched their oppressive homes and workplaces and flew into the sky never to be heard from again. What The Fireflies Knew by Kai Harris

Through KB’s disillusionment and subsequent discovery of her own power, What the Fireflies Knew poignantly reveals that heartbreaking but necessary component of growing up — the realization that loved ones can be flawed.

Small World

by Jonathan Evison available now, hardcover, Dutton

Local author Jonathan Evison brings us another new book to start the year off. This is a multi-layered historical novel where he expertly weaves many characters throughout time. I was instantly taken by all characters and how their family sagas were intertwined and how one choice can make a major shift for generations. Evison's pure heart and observation of humans and how they interact and react is truly magical. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed reading this, and I'm so proud of Johnny. –Kelly E.

Runcie takes us on a historical novel journey to the early 1700's as we enter the world of Bach and his family. A deeply moving story that puts a voice to this musical genius. –Kelly E.

Kaikeyi

by Vaishnavi Patel available in April, hardcover, Redhook

Royal Kaikeyi is raised on myths and tales: how gods obtained immortality, how they vanquish evil, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. Desperate for some measure of independence, she turns to the texts she once read with her mother and discovers a magic that is hers alone. But as the evil from her childhood stories threatens the cosmic order, the path she has forged clashes with the destiny the gods have chosen for her family.

One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle

available in March, hardcover, Atria Books

The writing Serle uses is so vivid and descriptive I felt like I was on the Amalfi Coast sunning myself, instead of under a blanket on a cold winter day. The magical elements give the story a fantasy vibe without being too unbelievable. While death can often be a heavy subject, Katy's journey through the loss of her mother is quite beautiful. It sounds like a cliché, but throughout this novel, I was sweetly reminded that in death one can discover a lot of life. –Kiana

Dictionary of Lost Words

available in March, paperback, Vintage

available in April, paperback, Ballantine Books

I loved this strange and quiet tale about an Artificial Friend (AF) named Klara. Purchased as a companion for an ailing teen named Josie, Klara is certain that she can heal Josie with the help of the sun. Told entirely from Klara’s perspective, this is Ishiguro at his best, complete with his characteristic sense of longing and humanity. Read this and you too will fall in love with Klara. –Claire

I love the history of the Oxford English Dictionary, and devoured non-fiction books on the subject, like Simon Winchester's Meaning of Everything and Professor and the Madman. Now in paperback, Pip Williams' fictional story of a young girl growing up in the shadow of the famous Scriptorium explores the role of women in the creation of the OED. Young Esme loves words, collects them, and grows into her role as an assistant to Dr. Murray, raised in equal and different measures by her Da, Aunt Ditte, Lizzy, and Dr. Murray. A lovely read. –Erin

Are you a Francophile who loves whimsical tales that take place in fictional French towns with notes of magical realism and history? I am. Unabashedly so, and I loved this book. Mireville is a town of serinette makers, a contraption that mimics birdsong, and the Blanchard family has been making them for generations. But young Henri Blanchard aspires to lace-making (quelle horreur!) and also believes he can bring the dead back to life. This is a delightful debut. –Claire

The pair try to overcome their pasts and ensure their futures by engaging in capitalism in one of its purest forms: drug dealing. Both highly suspenseful and existential, The Committed is a blistering portrayal of commitment and betrayal that will cement Viet Thanh Nguyen’s position in the firmament of American letters.

The Lonely Stories: 22 Celebrated Writers on the Joys & Struggles of Being Alone

Burning Questions : Essays and Occasional Pieces, 2004-2021

edited by Natalie Eve Garrett

available in April, hardcover, Catapult Publishing

by Margaret Atwood

As many of us have felt this new loneliness in the past few years, maybe we can start to feel less alone in those feelings. Amazing authors have come together to bring us The Lonely Stories, short essays about feelings unseen, alone, and in want of something more. Worth a read this year! –Ronnie

available in March, hardcover, Doubleday

In over 50 pieces, Margaret Atwood aims her prodigious intellect and impish humor at the world, and reports back to us on what she finds. The roller-coaster period covered in the collection brought an end to the end of history, a financial crash, the rise of Trump, and a pandemic.

Essays The Unwritten Book: An Investigation by Samantha Hunt

available in April, hardcover, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

A linked essay collection that blurs the lines of genre, the first non-fiction from the award-winning author of The Dark Dark and Mr. Splitfoot. There are several different threads in the book, but the most important has to do with The Manuscript — an unfinished semi-autobiographical novel written by her father that she found in his desk drawer days after he died. He worked for Reader's Digest but she never knew he was working on this book — and she discovers him through this manuscript, shows it to us with her commentary in the margins so we get to watch her read it. It's a book about reading, books, and wonder. It's incredibly weird but also incredibly warm.

Read Dangerously : The Subversive Power of Literature in Troubled Times by Azar Nafisi

available in March, hardcover, Dey Street Books

The New York Times bestselling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran returns with a guide to the power of literature in turbulent times, arming readers with a resistance reading list, ranging from James Baldwin to Zora Neale Hurston to Margaret Atwood. Virtual event in the works — watch villagebooks.com for info!

Reference Imaginary Languages : Myths, Utopias, Fantasies, Illusions, and Linguistic Fictions by Marina Yaguello

Index, A History of the : A Bookish Adventure from Medieval Manuscripts to the Digital Age by Dennis Duncan

available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton

Some of my favorite non-fiction is what I call “accessible nerdery” and this is a perfect example. History? Yes. Literary? Yes. From the beginnings of what we think of as books to how we sort and find information when it is literally at our fingertips, this story highlights an oft-forgotten part of writing. –Sarah

available in April, hardcover, The MIT Press

Recent years have seen something of a boom in invented languages, whether artificial languages meant to facilitate international communication or imagined languages constructed as part of science fiction worlds. In Imaginary Languages (an updated and expanded version of the earlier Les Fous du Langage, published in English as Lunatic Lovers of Language), Yaguello shows that the invention of language is above all a passionate, dizzying labor of love.

Writing Body Work : The Radical Power of Personal Narrative by Melissa Febos

available in March, paperback, Catapult Publishing

A feminist exploration of writing and reading. Melissa Febos has created a guide on how to be more personal when we write stories by making it personal herself. This book is for anyone who has struggled with their creative outlets and wants to dive deeper into writing their personal narratives. –Ronnie

Poems of Connection and Joy

by Ocean Vuong

edited by James Crews

available in April, hardcover, Penguin Random House

available in March, paperback, Storey Publishing

Following his anthology How to Love the World, Crews' new collection offers more than 100 deeply felt and relatable poems from a diverse range of voices including well-known writers Julia Alvarez, Marie Howe, Ellen Bass, Naomi Shihab Nye, Alberto Ríos, Ross Gay, and Ada Limón, as well as new and emerging voices. The collection includes prompts for journaling and exploration of selected poems, a book group guide, and stunning cover art by award-winning artist Dinara Mirtalipova.

That Was Now, This is Then : Poems

I am, once again, thoroughly impressed by Vuong's use of language. His second collection of poems, aptly titled, explores the complex interplay between time and relationships and memory. Where do we stand among it all? How can we stand? It's a messy place to be, but Vuong reaches toward it with rapt attention and gentleness. It's a beautiful, beautiful amalgamation of poems that are worth spending precious time with and returning to. –Madison

Customs : Poems

by Vijay Seshadri

by Solmaz Sharif

available now, paperback, Graywolf Press

Now in paperback, Vijay Seshadri’s brilliant follow-up to his Pulitzer Prize– winning 3 Sections. No one blends ironic intelligence, emotional frankness, radical awareness, and intricate humor the way Vijay Seshadri does. His fourth collection takes on the paradoxes of time and space, destabilizing highly tuned lyrics and elegies with sharp and exquisite turns in poems steeped in the complexities of being a self in the world, and being a human among other humans. In these poems, Seshadri’s speaker becomes the subject, the reader becomes the writer, and the multiplying refracted narratives yield an “anguish so pure it almost / feels like joy.” That Was Now, This Is Then affirms Seshadri’s place as one of America’s greatest living poets.

Masquerade

by Carolyn Wright available now, paperback, Lost Horse Press

Seed Wheel

by Kathryn Hunt available now, paperback, Lost Horse Press

FH: 360.671.2626 • LY: 360.526.2133 • villagebooks.com

available in March, paperback, Graywolf Press

The devastating second poetry collection by the author of Look, a finalist for the National Book Award. In Customs, Solmaz Sharif examines what it means to exist in the nowhere of the arrivals terminal, a continual series of checkpoints, officers, searches, and questionings that become a relentless experience of America. With resignation and austerity, these poems trace a pointed indoctrination to the customs of the nation-state and the English language, and the realities they impose upon the imagination, the paces they put us through. While Sharif critiques the culture of performed social skills and poetry itself — its foreclosures, affects, successes — she begins to write her way out to the other side of acceptability and toward freedom.

Historical Drinking Beer : A Global Journey Through the Past and Present

by John Arthur

available now, hardcover, Oxford

Beer’s invention 13,000 years ago was one of the fundamental motivations for the domestication of grains around the world. In early cultures, the control over the technological knowledge and resources to produce beer contributed to social hierarchies. Beer even likely provided the capital to motivate laborers to construct the ancient pyramids and other large-scale public works. Archaeologist Arthur focuses on past and present non-industrial beers, highlighting their significance in peoples' lives through four themes: innovating new technologies, ensuring health and well-being, building economic and political statuses, and imbuing life with ritual and religious connections.

Recently widowed himself, he reminded her that they had shared a few dates years before, set up by Nora. After several weeks of exchanging emails, he flew east to see her. Four months later she was diagnosed with AML, a fierce leukemia. In Left on Tenth, Ephron navigates the lows of enduring cutting-edge treatment and the highs of a second chance at love. Saving Yellowstone : Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America

by Megan Kate Nelson

available now, hardcover, Scribner

Millions visit Yellowstone National Park but few know its complex historical context. In late July 1871, the geologistexplorer Ferdinand Hayden led a team of scientists through a narrow canyon into Yellowstone Basin. The discoveries led to the Yellowstone Act in 1872, which created the first national park in the world. Saving Yellowstone follows Hayden and two other protagonists in pursuit of their own agendas: Sitting Bull, a Lakota leader who asserted his peoples’ claim to their homelands, and financier Jay Cooke, who wanted to secure his national reputation by building the Northern Pacific Railroad through the Great Northwest. These men staked their claims to Yellowstone at a critical moment in Reconstruction.

Seven Games : A Human History by Oliver Roeder

available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton

Roeder introduces thrilling competitors, such as evangelical minister Marion Tinsley, who across 40years lost only three games of checkers; Shusai, the Master, the last Go champion of imperial Japan, defending tradition against “modern rationalism”; and an IBM engineer who created a backgammon program so capable at self-learning that NASA used it on the space shuttle. He delves into the history and lore of each game: backgammon boards in ancient Egypt, the Indian origins of chess, how certain shells from a particular beach in Japan make the finest white Go stones. Beyond the cultural and personal stories, Roeder explores why games, seemingly trivial pastimes, speak so deeply to the human soul.

In this, provocative, timely, and painstakingly researched book, the award-winning author of Think Black tells the story of how Black labor helped to create and sustain the wealth of the white one percent throughout American history. Today, activists have taken the struggle for racial equity and justice to the streets. Of Blood and Sweat goes back through time to excavate the roots of this struggle, from pre-colonial Africa through post-Civil War America. As Ford reveals, in tracing the history of almost any major American institution of power and wealth you’ll find it was created by Black Americans, or created to control them — invaluable insight into our understanding of Black history and the story of America.

Kid A Mnesia : A Book of Radiohead Artwork

by Thom Yorke, Stanley Donwood available now, hardcover, Canongate

While the records Kid A and Amnesiac were rehearsed, recorded, and produced, Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood made hundreds of images. These ranged from obsessive, insomniac scrawls in pen to six-foot-square painted canvases, from scissors-and-glue collages to immense digital landscapes. They utilized every medium they could find, from sticks and knives to the emerging digital technologies. The work chronicles their obsessions at the time: minotaurs, genocide, maps, globalisation, monsters, pylons, dams, volcanoes, locusts, lightning, helicopters, Hiroshima, show homes and ring roads. What emerges is a deeply strange portrait of the years at the commencement of this century, a time that seems an age ago yet so much remains the same.

There are many kids I know that may struggle with reading. Either they can’t get interested or maybe the book is too long and that can be intimidating, or they really just miss picture books and want more visuals! Because of these scenarios I really LOVE graphic novels! They can be easier to follow because of the illustrations and therefore help with comprehension; they can be non-fiction or fiction so they range in topics of interest; and they are shorter but still packed with lots of information and a good storyline. This collection of non-fiction comics called Science Comics is one of my favorites to recommend to kids! They talk about a new topic in each one and range from science, space, nature, animals and more! –Kendra For Ages 9-13

All of Us Villains

Why Would I Lie

available now, hardcover, Tor Teen

available in April, hardcover, Scholastic

by Adi Rule

by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn

Vivica North is perfect, or so it seems. Diligent, aiming for valedictorian, and then Everette, the perfect college to help her achieve a perfect life. Though her world isn’t unimpaired yet, Vivica has little competition, and everything is going smoothly. Until he appears. Jamison Sharpe is effortlessly flawless and now rising towards valedictorian. However, Vivica is suspicious, even as she tells herself she's being paranoid, Jamison couldn’t be lying...right? This novel was compelling, intense, and is definitely worth reading. –Nora L. age 14

All of Us Villains is a dystopia about good versus evil and supernatural powers. Every 20 years, the “blood veil” tournament falls over the town of Ilvernath, entitling the strongest children of the magic-bearing families to fight to the death (Hunger Games, anyone?). I liked the plot of this book, but often felt confused because not a lot of explaining goes on. The story alternates between characters, making it hard to choose a favorite character. A little quirky, but the read is worth it. –Brynn R. age 15

This is a book you need to give your full attention to — no multitasking while reading; you have been warned — because there is a lot going on. Be prepared for plot twists you almost saw coming, history, fantasy, and stories from the past that interrupt the main story, annoyingly — until everything fits together and makes you say, out loud, “what the heck just happened?” I could have benefited from taking notes to keep track of everything, but even so I enjoyed it. –Louisa M. age 18

Clyde Ford is the author of numerous works of fiction and non-fiction. His memoir Think Black won the Nautilus Award for Social Change and Social Justice and the Washington State Book Award in Creative Nonfiction. ROUND IT UP for the Whatcom

Million Trees Project

Join us in supporting this season’s Round It Up partner The Whatcom Million Trees Project. The mission of Whatcom Million Trees Project is to plant and protect one million trees over the next five years (2022 thru 2026) in Whatcom County. It’s an urgent response to climate and biodiversity crises that will also enhance the health and resilience of our local communities. The million-trees goal includes protecting existing mature trees, not just planting trees. After all, protecting existing mature forests gives immediate carbon capture and biodiversity benefits. Conserving mature, diverse, naturally-regenerated forests (not harvest-style timber plantations) is also crucial to addressing problems NOW. Healthy, diverse forests — particularly in key locations such as Nooksack Watershed and Lake Whatcom Watershed — are our best defense to lessening now-common local floods, water quality issues, extreme heat domes, and potential fires. Ongoing projects and focus includes: • Reforestation & habitat restoration • Old-growth & legacy forest protection • New tree buffers along roadways and industry • Infill tree-plantings in parks and key urban lands • Fruit/nut trees for greater food resiliency • Policy advocacy (State & local) for trees ...and much much more! Whatcom Million Trees Project is an all-volunteer nonprofit. Support this important organization to ensure a more hopeful and resilient future for everyone in Whatcom County!

See whatcommilliontrees.org to learn more about their work and to find out how YOU can get involved. Discover volunteer opportunities, information on business partnerships, and additional ways you can donate and help.
