We still have some fun events scheduled for the fall. Our extremely popular Ryder Cup is scheduled for the weekend of October 10th. We have a New Member Scramble on Friday afternoon October 16th. The “Seve” one club tournament is Sunday October 18th in the afternoon. We close the season with two new fun events. First is the “Superintendents Revenge” Tournament on Sunday November 1st. We also are planning a “Cross Country” golf event for Saturday November 14th. Stay tuned for details on all these events! As many Members have said to me golf is one of the few things that seems normal right now. So now more than ever we could use a nice fall and a mild winter to help us bridge the gap to the 2021 golf season! All my best for great golf!!

Golf Course Update A Note From

S U P E R I N T E N D E N T
This year we have survived a pandemic, severe drought, a tropical storm and record number of rounds. While each year has its own set of unique challenges, this year has been especially difficult. The golf course has held up nicely during this extremely stressful year thanks to all the hard work and dedication from the Grounds Department. The work that we put into the course during the spring and fall is what makes the difference during the hot and stressful months of summer. Over the next few months we will begin working towards the 2021 season. The aerifications and seeding we do now will continue to strengthen our turf throughout the golf course. We still have some trees and debris from Tropical Storm Isaias that we will now have time to finish cleaning up as well.
Thanks to all the hard work and dedication from the Grounds
Starting September 14th we will begin the process of reseeding our rough. Throughout the years it has become contaminated with undesirable seed and grass varieties as well as weeds. Every year around this time we begin chemically treating the rough for weeds and reseeding them with a bluegrass and
Department
fescue mix. Once we are finished with the rough, we will begin verticutting fairways and seeding them with bentgrass. While this process is slightly disruptive and time consuming, it will continue to pay huge dividends. Having fairways that are predominately bentgrass allows us to keep fairways firmer and tighter and not have to overwater them. We will also start mowing down the native areas and start clearing them of weeds. This time of year is ideal for seed germination and the cooler temperatures also help to stunt the growth of weeds. Our aerification schedule is different than most places. I prefer to needle time the greens several times throughout the growing season and delay pulling cores until the late fall months. This allows our members a season without disturbing the putting surface. Once play

slows down at the club, we will perform a much more aggressive aerification that will allow us to amend

a greater amount of subsoils in the greens. We will also continuously aerify the greens throughout the

winter months if mother nature allows. This has been very instrumental in the overall health of the greens for the past two seasons and while this process is never fun for anyone, it must be done. 2020 was a special year. We learned a lot about the course, especially the limits that we could push it to. I would like to thank the entire staff, membership and especially Nash for helping out whenever or wherever they could and keeping us sane though the tough times.

Who knew in March what, if any, tennis season we would have! There was so much uncertainty with Covid19 as to when the courts would open and if it was safe to play. During the quarantine when many were fearful of leaving the house there was lots of puzzles completed, books read, Tiger King watched, cooking and eating (mostly eating). In early May we were among the first Clubs to open. This was a different start to the season. Courts had to be reserved online, the tennis pavilion was closed, singles play only, no congregating and lots of hand sanitizer to go around. People played and vacated. One week later the balance of the courts opened and included doubles play. The courts were busy with member play and social distancing was our new normal. There was an influx of new members THIS ISSUE as there was a need to get outdoors and exercise. Tennis was deemed one of the safest sports during this unprecedented time. We kicked off the early season with “singles box leagues” for juniors, ladies and men. Match play is an integral part of the development of all tennis players. Our summer box league allowed our members to get much needed match play. Our 5-week junior program began with over 65 kids in attendance and was such a success that it continued throughout the entire summer and our 4 week Fall Junior program is underway. Cardio Tennis was unveiled this summer. It is an engaging group fitness program featuring the heart pumping effects of tennis drills, games and skills delivering the ultimate fully body and calorie burning aerobic and anaerobic workout. Cardio Tennis started in June and ran biweekly. This program proved to be very popular amongst the membership. Both the Long Island Women’s Tennis League and The North Shore Women’s League cancelled for the first time since their inceptions. As an alternative to team interclub doubles play an intraclub league was formed with over 50 participants. Every Tuesday 24 ladies came out and competed on their level against other club members for the entire summer. The Gentleman of VCSP Tennis were introduced by Jonathan to a newly formatted Intra Club Doubles league. Participants were given a rating based on the USTA’S rating system, and players moved up or down depending on match results. Throughout the summer, over 30 men battled it out to see how close they could come to reaching the top court and how high they could advance their rating. All our club championship tournaments were played with lots of participation and competitive draws. Our mixed doubles A and B flights had a total of 27 teams which is more than in years prior. Congratulations to our winners and finalists, all who participated and the spectators who observed social distancing while enjoying the matches. September is a wonderful month for outdoor tennis and we plan to keep the har-tru courts open as long as the weather cooperates. Jonathan will be here through the month of September and we thank him for his hard work and dedication to the Club. Platform Tennis is around the corner and we are excited for the 2020-2021 season. Please join Sue Tarzian and me for a complimentary paddle clinic for those new to the game on Sunday, September 20th and Saturday, September 26th. The sessions are as follows and you must email in advance to reserve a spot. First 8 to sign up per session: 12:00pm-12:30pm, 12:30pm-1:00pm, 1:00pm-1:30pm. Email lizjaffe@villageclub.org Thanks to our Members for taking everything in stride and making this summer a memorable one! This was a summer like no other.

If you go into a match thinking you are going to lose... you probably will. Step onto the court with confidence. Think about your strengths and what you do well. Tennis is such a mental sport and if you walk on the court thinking your not that great it will effect the outcome of the match.

As we all know, 2020 has been filled with adversity. We started this year with high hopes for a very successful season at the Grille. We opened in early March for dining service and as quickly as the Grille opened, we were forced to shut down. This obstacle forced our team to re-imagine how we can bring service to our members. We promptly transformed the Grille into a curbside takeout restaurant. The response to our takeout service was incredible and the team could not have been happier to bring members a delicious meal in a safe manner.
Once the time came to reopen the Grille for regular service we accepted the challenge. Our main priority during the reopening process was to create a safe environment for dining. We were ready to open with all staff wearing mask/gloves, tables being socially distance, designated entrance/exits and members wearing masks while walking in the dining areas. Needless to say, the response from membership was unbelievable. As I spoke with many members throughout the week one theme stays true and that is how the Grille is one of the only restaurants they feel comfortable dining in. That make our team so proud as we are happy to bring a slice of normalcy back in everyone’s lives.
As we enter the fall months our team will continue to provide safe service whether you are dining at the Grille or ordering curbside to go. We are excited to end the season on a safe and positive note as we are ready to hit the ground running next year!

2020 has been a year full of challenges, creative thinking and adapting. As a team, we pushed ourselves to think of new ways to restructure to give our membership the most we could offer. The grille adapted into a takeout outlet, in which we never imagined it could be. To this day, we have a great outdoor dining oasis where our membership feels comfortable along with a steady daily takeout business. For events, we offered virtual programming that included, a comedy night, wine tasting, character story times, and family bingo. It was nice to see friendly club faces even though we may have been separated through a screen. It gave us all feelings of normalcy and community. As we enter the fall, we are excited to introduce a new fall grille menu with seasonal dishes and cocktails. We will begin to offer fall event programming to include a Kids Halloween Event, Fall and Winter Wine Dinners which you will be able to attend in person or virtually, Thanksgiving Takeout and many more. Please keep an eye out for official flyers to follow! During the next few months that lead us into the off season, we will be working hard to create a diverse event calendar to appease all membership.
