Golf Course Update It’s that time of the year when we shift our focus from mowing and start on our fall projects. Here is a list of upcoming agronomical processes the course will be undergoing. All these processes are a necessity to help the golf course recover and strengthen after a long season of wear and tear. October 28th- We will begin to renovate the 11th and 16th fairways. Each hole will be shut down during the initial renovation. Once the area is finished and ready for sod, we will open the hole and the disturbed area will be roped off and left as ground under repair. These areas are not to be entered under any circumstances. We will collect the golf balls gathered inside the roped off area and they will be placed in a container outside the proshop. We will also begin the process of verticutting our fairways. This is a helpful process that helps to tear out older mature grasses and leaves behind the younger smaller plants allowing for a more dense and uniform turf. November 4th – We will be aerifying Greens, Collars, Approaches and Tees. This is a lengthy process and will last most of the week. Instead of closing the course, we just ask that if you come to a hole where workers are present, please skip the hole or use a different tee box if they are working on the one you tee off from. This process will be much more invasive than what most of you are used to. The greens will be playable after we finish the process, but the holes will be much larger and much more sand will left on the surface. I feel we made great strides over the last year on our putting surfaces. This aerification will allow us to improve the putting surfaces even further. .

November 11th – We will begin to aerify the Fairways. This will be a long process that require us to aerify, drag the plugs to break up the soil from them, blow all the organic matter in to piles and remove all organic matter with our new vacuum. Its ok to drive across a fairway after it has been aerified and the plugs are still there. While we are aerifying, dragging and cleaning we ask that you skip the hole and move on to the next one. These machines work well but do slow at a slow pace. The aerifier moves at approximately 1 mph and having to stop every 10 minutes to allow a golf to play through slows down the process significantly. I hope to see you all out there squeezing in a few more rounds before the weather takes a turn for the worst. If you ever have any questions, feel free to stop me or send an email to golfcourse@villageclub.org 6

Racquet Sports Update Congratulations to Angela LaManna and Katie Schneider on winning The Sally Tournament held on October 10th in Scarsdale NY which benefits Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry, NY. 32 teams competed and Angela and Katie beat the #2 seed in route to the finals! Congratulations also to Sue Tarzian and her partner Kelly Brown Cobbs for placing 5th in the Lake Tournament held on October 11th in Franklin Lakes New Jersey. They lost in the Quarter Finals and won the reprieve. Columbus Day and Court 2 Columbus Day is Monday, October 14th and social play is treated as a weekend. The courts cannot be reserved before 11:30am Court 2 will be resurfaced on Tuesday, October 15th(weather permitting) and will be closed for 5 days to dry before it can be played on. Complimentary Introduction to Paddle Clinics If you are new to the game or would like to try it out please join me on Sunday, October 20th from 12-1pm. Paddle Round Robins We will be organizing social round robins in October every Sunday from 10:00-11:30am. All levels welcome. Platform Tennis Instruction Pointer Too many times we find ourselves as the receiving team down 0-30 because of missed returns. It is so important to make the return to get the point started. The three important things for a successful return of serve are: Keep your backswing short-avoid the big backswing it will throw off your timing and you will find yourself hitting late. It also allows the server to get to the net quicker. Take your feet to the ball-too many times we stand on the baseline stagnant and let the ball play us. Keep your swing smooth and take the ball at the peak of the bounce. Aiming over the center net strap will cut out unforced errors. 7
