e’ll be getting the candles out at VPHQ, as we celebrate our 14th Birthday! 14 years of being a small independent business in South Norfolk and having the pleasure of promoting hundreds, probably thousands, of other local businesses, large and small, and helping them to grow.

I enjoyed pulling together the Autumn fashion page, for

also includes another 40 local businesses offering you their products and services for the first time, so make sure you read the magazine from cover to cover and support everything local.

We are about to start work on the Winter / Christmas issue (while still wearing T-shirts and shorts!) so if you have a seasonal community event that you’d like us to promote for free, just hop onto our website to submit the Untildetails.next time…

WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN ISSUE

We may be a small independent business, but the reality is that Village People is the largest circulating magazine in the whole of Norfolk and Suffolk. I’m pretty proud that from starting small and working from the end of my dining table in Tacolneston, we now produce 64,000 copies and Royal Mail deliver every single one directly though country letterboxes. If I say it myself, well done us!

Four editions of Village People provide unrivalled coverage of Norfolk and Suffolk, reaching more homes than ANY other local magazine.

Read all our magazines issuu.com/villagepeoplemag

And to celebrate you will notice that this issue has grown in pages, so we can include more of what you have been asking for…more recipes, more beauty and more of what to do in our fabulous region. Not to mention content from some big names like Marco Pierre White, Nigel Slater and many others.

Stuart Jardine, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “We are immensely proud to launch this partnership in East Suffolk. We understand the vital role we play in supporting all areas of the community and feel this membership will make a real difference to many young people’s lives.

The initiative, run by awardwinning operator Everyone Active, in partnership with East Suffolk Council, aims to reduce the barriers between children and young people participating in sport and physical activity, and will give them free access to a range of facilities, depending on their age, including gym, swim, soft play and group exercise.

Some say that the best start in life for a children’s writer is a difficult childhood. They grow into adults who write stories as a soothing balm. My best-selling title, Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep, is about waking up in the morning and finding everything in place. It’s still in print after 25 years and was written at a time of great loss. All stories start with a problem. On my writing courses I called this ’Spinning your straw into Gold’.

I recently rented a cottage with a friend on the Wiveton Hall estate, owned by Desmond MacCarthy of Normal For Norfolk TV renown. It was the first flush of spring with happy farm animals wandering about. We ate at wonderful pubs in Blakeney and Wiveton and bought great food from Picnic Fayre in Cley.

Being with friends and family. Downtime on Sundays with the newspapers. A film in the evening.

I'm pleased to say that I have recently written a new picture book text. Children's books are important because they are formative. It makes me happy to write them and to know that they add to the happiness of children all over the world.

Portraits of Tibet by Diane Barker (Birds Eye Books, Graffeg). It’s photographic portraits of the nomad people of eastern Tibet, with commentary. I feel such an identification with these people and their Buddhist philosophy and such admiration for the author, who is a nomad herself.

During the pandemic I felt children’s books were irrelevant and I lost the playfulness needed to write them. Instead I wrote Facebook posts about Norwich in lockdown. I simply had to pay attention to this profoundly historic event.

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements, while failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere. 250g button mushrooms, finely sliced

2 1/2 cups tomato juice (with an optional touch of gravy browning added for extra colour)

7 tbsp white wine

METHOD

3. If you’re using brandy, pour it in around the edge of the pan so that it runs underneath the chicken. Cook for 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Add the wine in the same way, and cook for a further 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate and reduce the acidity.

Serves 4

Either 1 small chicken, cut into 8 pieces, or 8 chicken thighs, or 8 chicken breast fillets (skin on or off)

3 tbsp tarragon, chopped

2 shallots, very finely chopped

2 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp parsley, chopped

INGREDIENTS

to the frying pan, placing them under the chicken so they cook.

4. Next, add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.

22 RECIPE

1 tbsp plain flour, for coating

1 chicken stock pot

A few sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish

1. Gently heat half the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. The oil should be hot, but not so hot that it scorches the floured chicken. Next, spread a layer of flour on a plate or a tray, and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add a golden brown colour to the cooked chicken and help thicken the sauce.

2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until golden brown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Finely chop the shallots and add

5. While the chicken is simmering, take a separate frying pan and heat the remaining olive oil. Slice the mushrooms and add to the second pan, then fry for 3-5 minutes.

3(100g)1/2tbsp brandy, optional

Marco Pierre White’s Chicken Chasseur

Roast – halve lengthways, chop into 1-inch chunks, and wash thoroughly. Then, toss them in olive oil, salt and pepper and bake at 220oc for about 20 minutes, or until tender.

Leeks and eggs are made for each other. Fold sautéed leeks into an omelette or scrambled eggs, add to a frittata for a scrumptious Italian treat, or use liberally in a quiche or tart.

How you cook leeks is important to get the most out of them. Three of the best ways are:

Grill – slice in half lengthwise, rinse and dry well, and grill both sides on medium-high until they’re well charred and tender.

over a medium heat, add the leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften, about 5 minutes.

A cracking idea!

Sauté – chop as above, warm a glug of olive oil in a large skillet

Spread the leek love!

then, winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way off yet, but getting our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a little, well, ‘out of season’, you might say!

In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November, and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an early spring treat.

Think about kale, brussels sprouts, parsnips, and who can resist the Jerusalem artichoke? These are all easy to get into the ground, simple to maintain, and will flourish as the year goes on, ready for picking just when the temperatures begin to drop sharply in November.

The notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy. They are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up warm, with the products of our labour in front of us.

Leeks – a must on a winter plot – offer volume, flavour and spiciness right up until the soil freezes solid. Winter salads; rows of Lambs Lettuce, Land Cress and mustard, will need some protection from the elements, but once in the ground they are resilient and happy to be picked across the colder months, where they’ll regrow and keep the supply to your lunch table constant.

Horticultural inspiration, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and much-loved presenter, Alan Titchmarsh, discusses putting early preparations in place for the cold season.

You also need to start thinking about early spring vegetables –they’ll be longer in the ground but still working their magic through the winter months.

And you can never ignore hardy, tough and tasty onions (and shallots); easy to plant, brilliantly versatile, and incredibly resourceful in the soil. Onions have a very long growing season

As well as being great for wildlife, this area will provide local residents with a beautiful area to walk and picnic and the opportunity to harvest fruit from the orchard.

We have found a surprising diversity of plant species and these will be monitored over time while the meadow establishes. The hay has been recently cut by volunteers using scythes following training on our ‘Introduction to scything workshop.’ The parish has also planted a woodland and created a raised bank that has been seeded using wildflower seeds, and it will receive some ‘green hay’ as well.

Green hay refers to the process of cutting hay from a local wildlife-rich site and taking the cut hay to a new site to help create new wildlife-friendly areas. A local site is best, as it preserves the local genes and the habitat requirements of the wildflowers are likely to be met if they are sourced nearby.

for the best bits of fruit. Don’t forget that weed seeds in the lawn provide finches with extra nutrition too. So enjoy your lawn, and get your camera and binoculars ready!

With this extremelysummer'shotweather, very little lawn mowing has been done on the scorched grass, and in my garden the fruit trees are dropping apples and pears all over the place. Now we're in the cooler autumn and winter period, it's a good idea to let the lawn recover by not mowing the grass and leaving all that fallen fruit to supply winter food for your garden birds.

If you have a garden with fruit trees growing in the lawn, allowing the windfalls to stay on the grass over the winter will help the wild birds that visit your garden. Although many fallen fruit go soft and unsightly, they are a winter bonus to resident and migratory birds who will eventually eat every last scrap of the fruit, leaving the lawn clear for the first mow in the New Year.

This doesn’t cost anything, and you’ll be providing extra food during the winter, and birdwatching amusement too, as they congregate and spar

The 12th Man campaign provides Mental Health First Aid training to trades and interest groups, giving men the knowledge and confidence to talk about mental health and to use these skills to be the 12th Man at work and in their social lives.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 and Norfolk has one of the highest suicide rates in the UK. The struggles many of us faced during the pandemic brought mental health into even sharper focus, prompting the radio station and the 12th Man campaign to come together to produce a show dedicated to getting men talking about their mentalNickhealth.Little, Director and Co-founder of the 12th Man Campaign, says: "The 12th Man is a bit like a football crowd –

when a team is playing well and winning, the crowd is happy and creates a positive atmosphere. However, the team actually needs the 12th Man more when it’s struggling for form, and the 12th Man Radio Show helps people to support their friends, family and colleagues with their mental health."

First, if you've heard of fish referred to as brain food, you can thank DMAE. This substance is naturally produced in the brain, but DMAE is also present in anchovies, salmon, and sardines. DMAE in skincare, however, is used as a firming and antiwrinkle treatment. It’s a natural compound in the human body and synthetically reproduced for industry. The tensile effect of DMAE is due to the stimulation of fibroblasts; cells that produce connective tissue such as collagen.

Not exactly a name that trips off the tongue, but those of you who are keen on supplements may have come across it in your local health shop. Here’s the lowdown:

A great method of applying DMAE in clinic is using it for skin needling. This sounds dramatic, but just means the therapist uses an electronic ‘pen’ device with tiny needles to break the surface of the skin. This allows the product to penetrate and get to work immediately. The result is a smoother, firmer and plumper skin, with cumulative effects after a second treatment.

Chatting in her garden studio – shelves lined with plain vases and plates awaiting decorations and a kiln in the corner – it’s immediately clear that here is someone who absolutely loves her work. Living in the country, creating ceramics might seem a romantic idyll, but there are many frustrations and disasters along the“Becauseway.

The first thing that strikes me about Polly Fern’s exquisite ceramics is the elegance. There is charm, even humour, but everything is delicately balanced, with clarity and a seemingly effortless sense of design.

Much of her inspiration is drawn from her childhood, growing up in Norfolk, living in old houses with her cabinet-maker father and her mother, who is a

under the studio desk, to her fascination with period ceramics, and Georgian homes.

Home is the secret to success

Finely spun figures hold delicate dogs, skilfully drawn with a flick of a brush; leaves and branches entwine around stylish houses, and flowers spill around edges to frame the scenes; rhapsodic birds sit alongside heraldic lions and fleetingTheresquirrels.isadeceptive simplicity, and an almost folk-art naïvety that combines beautifully with the sometimes sophisticated purposes of her work – ornate vases, decorative plates, richly painted lampshades. There is so much of Polly in these designs, from her adored whippets, who in real life are usually found sleeping

She ended up working in a ceramics studio, learning new skills and techniques. She then began to release small, unique collections through her on-line shop, and placed a few pieces in galleries. A stint with Homes & Antiques magazine, illustrating maps for a monthly column, provided initial income, but Polly always believed she could succeed. “I knew I could, from the first time I sold a painting.”

I ask Polly a little more about the processes involved, and she shares some sketchbooks. “It’s not just making, decorating, glazing, firing, but also planning,

gardener. Polly initially specialised in Illustration at Norwich School of Art. But after trying an evening course in ceramics it was love at first sight. “I’ve always been focussed on making as well as drawing and painting – something I find very satisfying. When you are illustrating books it can only really be seen on paper. But I wanted my work to be seen in different areas; in homes, in gardens.”

Polly now lives with her partner, Richard, in a lovely Georgian cottage on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. She sees it as a blank canvas for her work. “When I couldn’t find the right wallpaper, I thought: “I’ll just make it!” Polly then taught herself to create repeats for wallpaper and ended up selling the result on her website. She also created her own tiles for a new kitchen. “Artists always have the most interesting homes,” she laughs.

The interior of the Baptist Chapel, c1910. Gas lamps were used to light the building. Rev Abner Morling lived in the village manse on Chapel Lane. Today, it has been restored to retain the decorative carpentry, wall and pulpit.

 The beautiful White Horse pub is on the A140 to Ipswich on the crossroads to Thorndon and Thornham. This 1922 postcard shows the stables at the back of the building, now a car park. The pub was a coaching inn dating back hundreds of years and is still serving customers today. Frederick Aldous was the landlord at this time.

Be especially aware if your dog is a hunting breed. Sudden movements from the cat can easily trigger their desire to chase – something to be nipped in the bud, as once activated the impulse can be hard to subdue. Likewise staring – distract your dog away from the cat and reward for calm behaviour.

In later years, we introduced a terrier puppy to a year-old Ragdoll cat. The similarly sized pair soon became inseparable, the cat’s supine ‘whatever’ attitude allowing a ‘rough and tumble’ sibling relationship right from the outset.

The newcomer is often young, and I think their infant demeanour activates a caring and gentle attitude in the older, established animal. We added a tiny kitten to our twoDobermann household with minimal kerfuffle. I ‘gave’ the kitten to the female dog to look after, praising her greatly for the maternal attitude she exhibited right from the start, and not particularly fussing the kitten, who was happy enough to be part of proceedings anyway!

Before too long it should be possible to let the pair get closer. Keep the dog on a lead and never pick up the cat to bring it towards the dog, as panicky spitting and scratching could easily ensue. 61 CANINE BEHAVIOUR

Whether introducing a kitten to an incumbent dog, or a dog or puppy to the resident feline, thought and patience make for success. It’s important that each pet has a place of comfort and peace to retreat to, somewhere containing their bed, water, food, toys and, in the case of a cat – a litter tray. Each then has a sanctuary.Beforebringing the two animals together, it can be really useful to introduce their respective scents. This is easy, simply wipe a soft cloth over the head of the cat and then leave the cloth in the dog’s area. Repeat the exercise, stroking over the

dog so that a scented cloth can be left for the cat. You can later progress to using your hands to touch both pets, thus mixing and transferring the Introductionsscents.should be made carefully, with someone accompanying each animal. Make the intro brief and give rewards for calm behaviour. Repeat these short meetings frequently. Keep the dog on a lead and allow the cat to regard the dog from a distance. Cats like to watch and evaluate situations, favouring somewhere high up as a retreat when unsure. A platform bed is ideal for this.

Blogger and qualified ‘Dog Listener’ Julia Collins advises how we can help our cats and dogs live together in harmony.

Many of us have cats and dogs that cohabit peacefully. It can be something almost taken for granted. Perhaps humans have just cleverly followed their instincts when putting the two species together!

You will also need a 20cm tart tin with a removable base.

250g plain flour  125g butter

For the filling:

3. Wrap the pastry in kitchen parchment and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Set the oven to 190oC/gas mark 5. Slice off onethird of the dough and set aside. smooth, firm dough. You can also do this by hand, rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingertips, then stirring in the sugar and eggs and a little water and bringing the dough into a ball by hand.

500g orange marmalade

RECIPE

5. Bake for 30 minutes until the pastry is pale biscuit-coloured and the marmalade is bubbling. Let the tart cool before easing from the tin and slicing.

4. Roll out the reserved pastry into a disc roughly the size of the tart, then cut into 2cm wide strips. Brush lightly with a little beaten egg, then place the strips one at a time on to the surface of the tart in a lattice pattern.
