akuchiol. What...never heard of it? Well you soon will. It’s all over the skincare industry like a rash, or something to get rid of a rash, and making big waves as a competitor to our favourite friend, retinol. Retinol has been considered the gold standard in anti-aging skincare for literally decades. It’s the go-to product for dermatologists, skincare therapists and formulators when they want to make a significant and visible difference to their clients’ skin. But retinol can, particularly when used incorrectly, result in peeling, redness and is a cause of photo-sensitivity. Bakuchiol, however, does a very similar job to retinol but without these unpleasant side effects. Let’s call this new cosmetic ingredient an ally, rather than a competitor. In addition, Bakuchiol is much more stable than retinol, which means it keeps its potency and effectiveness for a longer
period of time. Retinol degrades quickly in the presence of air and sunlight, which is why you’ll find good sources of retinol are always packaged in airtight, dark containers. Proper packaging is also part of the cost. Bakuchiol doesn’t react quite so much to atmospheric exposure, but it does degrade, eventually, over time. But why are they so similar? Bakuchiol is a plant-derived phytochemical which shares the same gene expression (the process by which specific genes are activated to produce a required protein) as retinol. This means theyy both have the ability to regulate the production of collagen and elastin; the essential elements of thicker, bouncy youthful skin. So, like human relatives, they share common properties.
Bakuchiol’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, among others, make it an even more perfect partner for retinol fans. As well as your night-time vitamin A application, pop on Bakuchiol oil or cream in the morning for a double whammy of active ingredients. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect the results from these impressive ingredients and you’re good to go with a great regime for all skin types.
