fter months of fundraising and planning behind the scenes, the long-awaited extension to the Falcon Meadow footpath, in Bungay, has been completed – making the full length of the Meadow accessible to all. The footpath extension has been created speciﬁcally to provide access to those who are less mobile – wheelchair users, families with pushchairs and elderly people – who may be less sure of their footing. Graham Halliwell, from Falcon Meadow Community Trust, said: “Falcon Meadow exists for the community to enjoy, and as

Trustees we have a duty to ensure that everyone in the community can access it easily. There is huge pleasure in walking the full length of the Meadow, but at certain times of the year the mud used to make the Bridge Street end virtually inaccessible. We hope that this path will allow everyone, including people with restricted mobility, to enjoy the views and tranquillity that the Meadow has to oﬀer.” The Trustees would like to thank the East Suﬀolk Community Partnerships Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund for

ortwell Community Centre will host a very special fundraiser on 24 and 25 July for the Parochial Church of Homersﬁeld — and it will be a must-attend event for music lovers. Organiser Lucy Hammond said: “We have asked people to donate unwanted CDs, DVDs and vinyl records and the response has been amazing. We now have over 1,700 vinyl, 1,700 DVDs and 1,000 CDs, plus a selection of cassettes and audio books. People’s generosity is very humbling. One couple arrived and gave us 700 vinyl records!

“The world of vinyl pricing is very new to us and we have been on a steep learning curve. Our crash course has taught us that the value varies greatly depending on the pressing, its condition and whether it’s still popular. They are now all very reasonably priced, because we want people to get a good deal, and categorised so they are easy to ﬁnd. We are very much hoping there will be a good turnout for the event. Many items are 3 for a £1 and there will be lots of cake and cups of tea too.”

Art goes virtual

n exhibition organised by one of Norfolk’s most established art groups is now live. Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle, which was established in 1885, has launched a virtual exhibition to replace their annual show at the Forum, which was cancelled due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions. During the ﬁrst lockdown, the group was one of the

ﬁrst in the county to switch to online exhibitions when audiences were hungry for art, but unable to visit physical exhibition spaces. Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle are continuing their virtual oﬀering as a way of supporting new and existing members. In this second online iteration, there is a variety of art forms on show in various mediums and subject matter, with all

proceeds going straight to the artists. Hazel Pidsley, Chairman of Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle, said: “We feel strongly that artists have had their livelihood disrupted so severely due to the pandemic, and this is a way to support the creative arts and our valued members. The pair will take on the LEJOG Challenge, which is a virtual race that enables entrants to clock up the 874 miles from one end of the UK to the other (Land’s End to John O’Groats) in their own time and in their local area.

02. At the end of the woodland path turn right into Gull Lane. After 50 metres, turn left at the wooden finger post, cross the wooden planks over a ditch and walk up the path with the hedge on your left. At the end of the path turn left onto Yelverton Road. Walk past the first right of way to Aldis Farm Shop & Café. Just past the Water Tower, turn right at the finger post along a drive towards a house called The Driftway. 03. Follow this drive to the big houses and then veer right and then left to a gate. The vehicle track then becomes a footpath between hedges. When the footpath reaches the kissing gate on the left of the path, continue straight on in the same direction until you reach Wheel Road. Turn right and continue past Reeder’s Lane on the left and past the speed signs. 04. Just after the bend in the road, after ‘The New House’ and the white railings, take the public footpath on the left. Continue up this track where there is a field junction, bear right just before the wooden post and immediately turn right in the next field to walk on the well-trodden path along the field edge. 05. Near the end of the field turn right, go across two blank bridges and continue on a path straight across the field until you reach another plank bridge and a kissing gate. Go across the field to a second kissing gate and turn right down a wooded path. The modern church will be on your left.

Directions 01. Keeping the Church on your left, follow the shingle track towards a cottage. If the Church looks familiar outside, Drone footage of it appeared in Bridget Jones’s Baby. Veer left before the cottage, taking the track at the wooden ﬁnger post. Follow the footpath around the trees on the right into a wood. 18

06. Leave the public right of way at the church entrance and continue straight onto Upgate Road, past White House Gardens on the right to the next junction and turn right. This is also called Upgate, but becomes Hall Road after passing Burgate Lane on the right. Walk past Fallowﬁeld on the left and turn left into Long Road, then cross the road to the footpath on the left. 07. Continue past St Anne’s Road, staying on Long Road. Take the ﬁrst right turn into Spur Lane, which is beside the only house on the right. At the T-junction turn right into Pigot Lane. Take the next right into The Street at the Framingham Pigot village sign. Walk down The Street back to St Andrew’s Church on the right.

eeling hot, hot, hot! The tropical days of summer are here, warm temperatures, light breezes and humid nights, just close your eyes and imagine an exotic location far, far away… If you’re missing your distant holiday this year, you might wish to create an area in your garden full of plants which remind you of previous travels. Of course, many of the plants you remember may be tender and therefore not suitable to be grown outside here in East Anglia, but there may be hardier plants of similar appearance which will give you the impression you want without causing you the hassle of giving them winter protection. It’s not just plants that give the desired look, it’s also about the style of your creation. For a lush jungle or rainforest feel choose plants with bold and exciting foliage, such as variegated or plain fatsias, rheum (ornamental rhubarb), gunnera and bananas. Intersperse these with ‘fallen’ branches and bark chips, add hostas and large ferns, and leave climbers trailing over the ground to give a less ordered appearance. If you’re hankering after a bit of the Far East, bamboo is a must with its tall canes creating subtle sound and movement, but do

choose clump-forming varieties or grow them in containers unless you want your garden invaded by the suckers. Oriental gardens are tranquil spaces, simple in their colour range (predominantly green), often having still pools and featuring plants such as dwarf pines, maples, azaleas and hummock-forming grasses. One beautiful plant that would ﬁt this style is Sophora ‘Little Baby’, a small bush with tightly contorted stems giving the look of a bonsai tree, without the training or the price tag. For those of you with a sunny free-draining site, a Mediterranean-style garden could be created using many of our favourite plants which are ideally suited to these conditions; salvias, agapanthus, dianthus, lavenders

and a whole host of culinary herbs including rosemary, fennel and thyme. Figs and grapevines will also thrive here if you enrich the ground, but if the soil is incredibly poor and light try succulents, cacti and other spiky plants. Mulch the surface with gravel and position larger ornate stones or weathered terracotta pots and statuary amongst the planting. Naturally enough, you may like to holiday in this country, in which case why not enjoy the colourful chaos of a traditional cottage garden, or go stately with a display of great British topiary!

Giants of the art world Village People showcases art exhibitions and much more at the Sainsbury Centre, University of East Anglia Bill Brandt | Henry Moore: Closes 22 August 2021 This major exhibition traces the parallel and intersecting careers of two leading artists of the 20th century. The photographer Bill Brandt (1904–1983) and sculptor Henry Moore (1898–1986) ﬁrst crossed paths during WWII, when they created images of civilians sheltering in the London Underground during the Blitz. These photographs by Brandt and drawings by Moore today rank among their most iconic works, and bring together almost 200 pieces including signiﬁcant sculpture, iconic photographs and drawings, little-known photo collages and rare original colour transparencies. Bill Brandt | Henry Moore reveals the interdisciplinary range of these two artists, exploring how they both responded creatively to the British landscape and communities during the turbulent times in which they lived.

Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years: 19 September 2021 – 30 January 2022 The Sainsbury Centre presents a new exhibition that surveys for the first time Grayson Perry’s earliest forays into the art world, re-introducing the explosive and creative works made during his formative years between 1982 and 1994. His ground-breaking pots of this period have been reunited for the first time following a hugely successful appeal to the public in 2018 by Perry and The Holburne Museum in Bath, where this exhibition first opened in January 2020. Grayson says: “This show has been such a joy to put together and to see these early works again, many of which I have not seen since the 80s. It is as near as I will ever get to meeting myself as a young man, an angrier, priapic me with huge energy but a much smaller wardrobe.”

There’s more to explore at the Sainsbury Centre Why not take a leisurely walk around the Sculpture Park at the Sainsbury Centre, which sits in 350 acres of parkland with a lake? The number of works on display is growing all the time, and this year Leiko Ikemura's Usagi Kannon sculpture (2012/19) will be installed. Inside the Sainsbury Centre itself, you can see the remarkable Sainsbury Art Collection for free, and park free too. There is a beautiful new café and terrace, where you can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view with coﬀee and cake. f you were asked to choose a wild flower that represents the Claylands of Suﬀolk and South Norfolk, what would you select? Perhaps ox eye daisies or the magenta spikes of green winged orchids? Maybe it would be the joy of spring primroses along ditches, or cowslips growing on ﬁeld edges in early summer. Each of these would be a good candidate, but for me it would be the creamy yellow sulphur clover. In bright sun in June or July, sulphur clover lives up to its name, with vivid flowers that are larger than the common white and red clovers. As the seeds ripen, the flowers fade to brownish orange and, once you know what you are looking for, the leaves can be spotted for most of the year. Just like other clovers, they are ‘trifoliate’, meaning the leaves are split into three parts, but unlike other British clovers, they are grey-green and downy to the touch. Like many other plants, sulphur clover tells a story of soil and geology and human history. It likes to grow on the chalky boulder-clays of the Claylands,

where long ago glaciers dumped ground-up debris in low hills, although it’s also found on a few outcrops of chalk soils in North Norfolk. Wherever it grows, it is, like the orchids and cowslips, a clue to the location of old meadows and commons that were once cut for hay or grazed by farm animals. In the past century, many grasslands have been converted to arable ﬁelds or lost to development. Even those that remain can be aﬀected by cutting at the wrong time of year, by

spraying with herbicides and shading when scrub grows. Sulphur clover is now listed as a nationally scarce plant, with South Norfolk and Suffolk considered by conservationists its stronghold in England. In South Norfolk, sulphur clover is mostly found on a series of Roadside Nature Reserves, cared for by Norfolk County Council. However, even these are vulnerable to spray drift from nearby fields, compaction by vehicles and fertiliser run-off. Over a decade ago, Henry

Other wild flowers spread through the hay include pinkflowered spiny restharrow, yellow rattle and the aniseed-scented pepper saxifrage. vernight, a young nursery nurse was hailed a heroine after sustaining horriﬁc injuries from a machete-wielding attacker. Lisa Potts, just 21, was shielding her pupils during a teddy bears’ picnic on a summer’s day in July 25 years ago; it changed her life forever. After three operations and physiotherapy and years of healing from the emotional scars, Lisa took a counselling course and launched a children’s charity in the deprived West Midlands suburb of Wolverhampton, where the attack took place. Lisa has shared her story at Norfolk venues, including Hope Community Church Wymondham, telling how she has rubbed shoulders with celebrities, visited a Romanian orphanage and become an author and speaker. She has won a host of awards, including the George Medal for bravery and an honorary fellowship from the University of Wolverhampton, for her work with children and families. Her involvement with campaigns and events includes overseas education and posttraumatic stress disorders and she shares her inspiring story at conferences for women, teachers, police and counselling organisations, as well as church events. “Things happen in people’s lives and you can move

on with the encouragement of an inspiring story. It took years of grit and resolve to overcome emotional trauma, a fractured skull and lacerations which nearly severed my arm. I also needed to relearn how to tie my shoelaces and fasten buttons. “After gruelling surgery, I faced my six-foot-two assailant in court. It was frightening; I was one of the first to give evidence for an hour during cross-examination, but I had a sense of peace as I looked at him. I had forgiven him, otherwise I would be unable to tell my story.” During those harrowing times, Lisa found courage and forgiveness from her strong faith. “There were many sleepless nights, but God was my comfort and guide, even though I felt I was on a rollercoaster for five years of my life while I was followed by the press.” Lisa launched Believe to Achieve (B2A) in 2001, to bring hope, purpose and potential to youngsters aged seven to 11. The charity, where she is now a trustee and co-chairman, works with five to 25-year-olds to enhance personal development, education experience and future aspirations. It includes provision for holiday, lunchtime and after-school activities and internet/social media awareness workshops, as well as offering counselling services and parental and peer support.

LOCAL HISTORY

Memories of Shimpling Local historian, Dennis Cross from Diss, shares with us his fascinating collection of old postcards, focusing on a diﬀerent village in every issue. This time, we take a walk down memory lane in Shimpling. A house on Hall Lane, formerly owned by Mrs Lockwood, being repainted — around 1950.

This 1963 postcard was taken on the Eagle Field and shows Dan Dye, last of the small local farmers, with a load of straw bales being sorted by a 13-year-old Dennis Cross - who helped on the farm.

A 1915 view of the Hall Lane crossroads looking toward Dickleburgh. The vintage car on the right is in front of the old village dog pound and the road to the church and Hall Farm. The 19th century double cottage on the left was pulled down in the 1970s, and the hornbeam tree there marks the corner of the former Hall Green.

Taken outside the blacksmith’s shop in 1910, this picture shows Robert Ling attending to a horse shoe for a local farmer. His son Herbert took over the family business, retiring in 1964. No trace of the building remains; only the ash tree on the left marks the spot. 35

LOCA AL HISTORY

This 19 960 postcard show two cottages called Bridles, formerly Beldams. It was built in the 1650s and the steep pitch of the roof, now pantiles, was designed for thatch. At that time, the house overlooked 20 acres of common land.

Taken outside St George’s Church in 1910, the building is a small flint and freestone structure with a chapel, nave, north porch and west-facing Norman tower, with a round base containing four bells. The people shown have been decorating the church for Sunday service. The rector was Jeﬀrey Watson Willard. St George’s was completelyy restored in 1987 and retains all its charm.

The Norfolk Postcard Club meets regularly in Trowse in Norwich and new members are very welcome. Meetings have currently been suspended. Dennis is also the author of several local history books that can be purchased by contacting him direct.

Grandmother knows best! Caroline Topping looks at how to store food without single use plastic

t has become more and more of an issue for me to mitigate my purchase of items wrapped in packaging with the thought that somewhere, if I return my packaging, somebody is recycling it. I have therefore decided that I will try wherever possible to refuse packaging. This leads on to a whole new dilemma and one I believe our grandmothers knew the answer to, but with our faster pace of life and higher dependence upon convenience, it has been forgotten! So how do you store food without single use plastic? When I look in my fridge and cupboards I see fruit, veg, bread and cheese either laying there free of packaging, but deteriorating quickly, or in some form of ‘protection'! I try to purchase my shopping from independents and free of packaging, taking my little nets and 'bags for life' and asking the shop to load my bags with mushrooms, grapes and other goodies, and then I cycle home with them safely in my pannier bags and basket. But once I get them home, the quandary arises… how do I store my food to give it the longest lifespan?

I typed my dilemma into Google and found 'Eco With Em'! What a hero she is, oﬀering some great tips and real solutions. Here they are: Leafy vegetables, cut the ends oﬀ the stems then store in glasses of water in the fridge, or on your counter/ window sill. Onions and potatoes, store in a basket in a dark space. Wrap your lettuce as individual leaves in a tea towel and place in the fridge. Wrap bread in a cloth (or pillow case) and store in a wooden bread bin. Put leftovers in the clean jars you have been storing for these occasions, or cover with a plate and refrigerate. Stand celery and float carrots in water. Wrap beans and peas in a damp cloth. Store whole items like stoned fruit, bananas and tomatoes in the freezer. Use bees wax wraps for cheese.

CAKE RECIPE

Mocha Walnut Cake Traybakes are a great way to create plentiful portions of cake with minimum fuss. Cut it into generous cake bars for 14, or into squares for smaller tasty treats! Serves 14

Keep the cake in an airtight tin in the fridge (because of the mascarpone) and eat within four days

INGREDIENTS Cake: 70g good quality cocoa powder (we use Green & Black’s) 1 heaped teaspoon instant coffee 1 rounded teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 200ml boiling water 4 large eggs 375g soft brown sugar 180ml rapeseed oil 200g self-raising ﬂour 60g walnuts, chopped (optional) Frosting: 275g unsalted butter, very soft 200g mascarpone, room temperature 275g icing sugar 3 heaped teaspoons instant coffee, dissolved in 20ml of boiling water Decoration (optional): 30g dark chocolate (min. 50% cocoa solids) 14 (or 28) walnut halves (optional)

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC (160ºC fan). Grease a 30cm x 23cm rectangular baking tin (at least 4cm deep). Whisk the cocoa, coﬀee and bicarb in the 200ml boiling water until combined, then set aside. In a large bowl,

beat together the eggs, sugar and oil until well combined – about 3 minutes. Add the cocoa mixture and stir until incorporated. 2. Fold in the self-raising flour, and then the walnuts, if using. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 30 to 40 minutes until risen and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven, run a knife around the edge and leave to cool in the tin. 3. To make chocolate bark (optional), melt the chocolate in a microwave/over boiling water, then pour onto a cold flat surface – a granite counter is ideal. Spread to about 3mm thick and leave to set. Once hard, draw a knife blade held in both hands across the chocolate, so that pieces roll or lift up. 4. For the frosting, beat together the butter and mascarpone until

light and fluffy. Add the icing sugar in three batches, then whisk for about five minutes on high speed. Pour in the coffee mix and whisk through. Turn the cake out, trim the edges if you want perfectly regular slices, then spread on the frosting. Decorate with walnut halves and chocolate bark, if using.

Back To The Garden, great food

e are two friends who live in Forncett St Mary and St Peter and we love to explore, have adventures and enjoy special days out. Our very high standards include ‘The Sausage Roll Test!’ – must be firm in the hand and HOT. And fizz – must be COLD. Our first review takes us to the North Norfolk Coast, starting with a walk in the pretty village of Heydon (NR11 6AD). Here you will find a lovely tea shop, a very good pub and a few small shops. But we just walked to the big house and enjoyed the beautiful surrounding countryside. Back to the car and on to ‘Back to the Garden’ in Letheringsett

(NR25 7JJ), lots on oﬀer, but no sausage rolls!! However, we did enjoy a lunch of Halloumi Fingers and a delicious salad. We sat in the garden where there are plenty of tables, and there’s also lots of room undercover and inside. A very good menu and cakes galore, plus some XXL Scones. The produce market and butchery are well worth a visit. Next – a quick stop oﬀ to say hello to ‘Normal for Norfolks’ Desmond, at Wiveton (NR25 7TE), and then on to Blakeney (NR25 7NE), where we joined the North Norfolk Coastal path for a walk and an ice cream. Fabulous views across the waterways and the marshes; the walk to the ‘point’ will never disappoint and seals can be viewed all year round. Plus, it’s a great place to familiarise yourself with the local godwits and even a shank or two.

As the sun begins its farewell, we need to be thinking about the journey home. But not before we drive further along the coast road, through all the pretty villages, to Brancaster (PE31 8BY). Here you will find the White Horse pub, famous for its fantastic seafood and a very fine wine list, plus fresh and simple lunches and dinners. Booking definitely advised. Great views across the marshes and waterways, sit inside, on the terrace, or, like us, in the garden to watch the sunset. We didn’t have the food, or the sunset, but it would have been remiss of us not to toast a perfect day with a glass of cold-ish fizz. Oh dear! Time to go home…as the sun disappeared behind Scolt Head Island Reserve – a wonderful view from the pub terrace – we left the beauty of the North to return to our equally lovely South. 43

Dare to Doodle Art writer Kristy Campbell explores the beneﬁts of doodling, and one artist's take on this mindful creative form

ational Doodle Day is celebrated annually in September, where artists come together to doodle and raise funds to support individuals living with epilepsy, through an online auction. Doodles are known to be simple compositions of abstract lines, p

shapes, sometimes outlining characters or words. They often come about casually while a person is busying themselves with another task. It has been noted that doodling can be a tremendously valuable tool for recalling hazy memories, problem solving, g helping p g concentration and

relieving stress. It is a fantastically accessible way of capturing and communicating ideas for all ages. I caught up with accomplished local artist and maker, Emma Jones (whose work is shown here) to discuss her creative journey and the role of doodling within her work. Jones is a master’s graduate of Museums, Galleries and Contemporary Culture from the University of Westminster, currently pursuing an essential post in arts education. In our interview she guides us through her early experiences with drawing, how these have informed the meticulousness of her striking sketches, and reflects on some of her proudest achievements with this modest yet specialised art. “From a very young age I remember wanting to draw and make. I would ask for things like Sellotape and paper for Christmas instead of toys, and I remember often staying in to draw while my siblings went out to play. I would doodle on everything, in most of my English classes in High School I would spend time drawing the backs of people’s heads (my very own life drawing class).” Like Jones, many of us have doodled while taking a phone call, or tried our hand at realising a crafty vision. She tells us more about the innovative ways doodling features in her everyday. “Quite a lot of the time I will draw words out in my notebook, as it helps me to retain the information better. I often ﬁnd a drawn shopping 47

list is much easierr to remember than a written one. Or if I need to explain something, drawing it will mean I can explain it much easier than verbally explaining it.” After hearing Jones’ experiences, I asked for her advice on what drawing utensils we should source to start developing our concepts like she has. “I always like a biro, I really like graph paper, as I’m quite methodical, so I have a lot of graph paper notebooks. Always good to have a good stash of coloured pencils and drawing pencils too, the odd bit of watercolour is also lovely!” When she isn’t busy creating deviceful artwork from familiar everyday thoughts and materials, Jones is committed to advancing her artist practice from a very

organised drafting organ ble placed beside tab a wonderful selection of artist books, arranged by colour. “I’ve really enjoyed producing a series of letters with animals or birds that h accompany them. It has really challenged me to draw things like fur and feathers. Doodling is a great tool for creating new artwork. I often think drawing is a bit like exercise, you have to warm up, and practice to be good. “For me, it’s also a great way to visualise what something will look like! If I have an idea in my head, I have to do a small sketch or version of it to make sure I’ll like it once it’s ﬁnished. I also think a bit of mindless doodling creates new compositions or ways of placing things that I can then input into

my practice, so in this way is really helpful for creating new work.” Be sure to take a look at the selection of doodles available in the national auction this year, and perhaps explore what can be made of the designs stemming from your own casual mark-making – you might be amazed at how your handiwork can grow! ith restrictions gradually easing, and vaccination rates climbing, relaxation really has a chance to set in. How succulent every meet-up and invitation feels, how juicy the visit to cafe or restaurant, with (at last) slightly more attention paid to conversation than the door handles we have touched and our proximity to fellow customers! Landmark days are returning by stealth, and a schedule for The St Margaret’s Annual Flower and Produce Show was optimistically tucked inside our regular village magazine. With so many categories, there is something for everyone, from the stolid home produce to the unusually themed flower arrangements. Serried rows of culinary triumphs await judgement as to their perfection — flavour, texture and appearance taking equal share as tough criteria. In the children’s section ‘A Picture of Your Family’ and ‘An Animal Made from A Vegetable’ vie for attention, occasionally merging as far as recognisable features are concerned. Imaginative handicrafts and impressively atmospheric photographs warrant patient scrutiny, while ‘Handmade Toys - Any Medium’ demand a closer look. The main attractions are, of course, the very serious vegetable entries, from potatoes, (coloured as well as white), through garlic, carrots and cucumber to tomatoes. Every item is ‘ﬁrst day at school scrubbed’ and presented

with utmost intent upon a white, paper plate. Herbs and hens’ eggs bridge the gap as we arrive at the plant section: foliage, flowering and succulent, are all equally engaging, before we meet the sweetly perfumed roses and sweet peas. Unlike the floral arrangements, these participants are assessed upon their physicality, the ‘Miss Worlds’ of their species, slender of stem and near perfect in every petal! Innocent brownies and fluﬀy scones tease the onlooker with their pillowy perfection. Crumbly blonde shortbread and shiny sausage rolls, delicious, immaculate…but not to be touched! Wouldn’t just considering entering such home creations immediately foster burnt edges,

snapped stems and wobbly seams?! For the atmosphere is serious. The background chatter may be gentle but, make no mistake, the competition is fierce. Such green and pleasant annual combat carries weight. Although the prize money is endearingly modest, the importance attached to every class is considerable. Village rivals joust with their courgettes, beans and carrots, vie over vases and compete over crusts, for cups can be won and engraved for posterity, tangible testaments to craftsmanship and skill. And there is true delight in the interaction, the shared experience, technically inside, with a bracing breeze swooping off the fields through open windows and doors. 55

Petal Power! Laura Myatt, from Falcon Meadow Community Trust, looks at how flowers can help us beat stress

fascinating scientific study has found that looking at flowers helps us to recover from psychological stress – and where better to test this theory than our own wildflower haven, Falcon Meadow?! Most people would instinctively say that flowers make them feel better – who doesn’t feel their spirits lifted when the first snowdrop peeps through, or cow parsley lines the verges? A recent study reported in the Journal of Environmental Psychology has taken this notion one step further, and found compelling evidence that the act of viewing a flower has fast and powerful psychological effects. So how did they work that out? Participants in the study were shown two sets of images while their blood pressure, stress levels and brain activity were monitored. The first set of images were highly negative (violence, injuries etc); and the second were termed ‘recovery’ images – a daisy, an abstract flower image, a small cross on a blank background, a blue sky and an office chair…although perhaps this one should have been in the first set! Not surprisingly, after seeing negative images, people’s blood pressure and stress levels increased significantly; and activity within the amygdalahippocampus (an area of the brain associated with negative emotions) also went up. But in

stark contrast, the response to the ‘recovery’ images was very clear. The flower image produced the fastest and most pronounced recovery in blood pressure, which often reached lower levels than before. It also produced the biggest reduction in the stress hormone cortisol. Plus, activity within the amygdalahippocampus decreased the most when viewing the flower image. And it didn’t even take long to produce results – improvements were noticeable within three seconds! So, perhaps you didn’t need a scientist to prove it, but just in case you did…it’s oﬃcial, looking at flowers will make you feel good! And we’d suggest that wildflowers in a stunning location will make you feel even better. So please take advantage of the charm and variety of the wildflowers on Falcon Meadow this summer when they are at their ﬁnest. The meadow is yours,

ow many of you have trained your dog to respond to hand signals as well as voice commands? Not many, I bet, and even fewer bother with a whistle. When you set about forging a bond with your dog, it makes great sense to use as many means of communication as possible.

Many of us will have experienced trying to converse with someone who doesn't share our particular language. We use our hands, often acting out that which we do not have the vocabulary for. So why not take the same approach with our dogs? Imagine this; if we are desperate to ask a burning request of our pet, wouldn’t

Adding hand signals to your training commands clarifies and emphasises your instruction and proves a valuable addition to your canine tool box if distance or windy weather prevents your voice from carrying. When your dog cannot hear your voice, he will still look for your signals. Put it this way – if he can’t hear you, and you haven’t factored in any other communication system, he won’t be looking for anything from you! While you are on the job, use a whistle. Another weather buster and a great attention grabber! You can soon polish up a sequence: whistle to gain attention, followed by signal and voice to forge a strong join-up, thus keeping the focus firmly

‘Down’ – indicate just that with downward sweep of the arm ‘Sit’ – upwards from the forearm with a flat palm. Then add your whistle. Multiple peeps as you call your dog in. One long blast for sit at a distance, and I use one short peep for sit and two for down, but you can develop your own system.

i Helen, many of my clients are facing this challenge and it can be hard to find clothes that make you feel good. But I’m a firm believer that your shape, not size, matters most, and wearing the right clothes to balance your body proportions can take inches off you! The ideal body shape is the hourglass, denoted by shoulders and hips in line with a defined waist. Many of us do not fit into this category, we have wider hips creating a pear shape, or broad shoulders creating a top heavy shape. Some of us might be rounder in the middle, but whatever we are we can create illusions to balance the body to create a slimmer, more stylish you.

Here are a few quick ﬁx tricks! n Pay attention to your neckline. Wide, scoop, slash or boat necks tend to extend the shoulders outwards, while ‘V' necks draw the eye inwards. If you are top heavy, choose the latter to narrow shoulders and create more balance with your lower torso. If you feel hip challenged, opt for the wider necklines that add the illusion of extending shoulders to balance with those hips.

Shaped and lightly tailored clothes are an eﬀective way to increase the illusion of a waist. Jackets, tops or sweaters which have been cut to draw in at the waist are your best friend. There can be a tendency to hide in looser clothing, but try to avoid straight or baggy lines which can add pounds. n

n Always leave your lightly tailored jackets undone so there is a column of another colour showing underneath, as this will lengthen and

narrow the torso. Check the hem length of your jacket or top, too, and ensure it ﬁnishes above or below the widest point of your hips. Finishing it there can add pounds! Lastly, extend those legs by choosing high rise, straighter styles. My favourites are Amazing Woman with tummy control, or Freddy Curvy jeans, which lift and hold in everything! Wear a similar colour footwear to your chosen bottoms to add inches to your legs, creating a longer, slimmer you! n

ew people find life assurance, critical illness plans and income protection attractive! Unlike a mortgage, investment or pension, there’s nothing aspirational about these household expenses that help to safeguard you and your family financially against a serious illness or death. It’s all too easy to bury your head in the sand and think it will never happen to you, that you can’t afford it, or that your employer will look after you. There are two distinctive types of life assurance and both pay out lump sums on your death – ‘term insurance', which provides cover over a pre-determined period, and ‘whole of life’, which continues until you die. When choosing, it’s important to consider who you’re providing life assurance for, and why, how much is needed and for how long. Check also whether your employer provides a death in service benefit that reduces the need for extra cover. If you want to provide security for your family in the event of your death with a term insurance contract, it may be worth considering ‘family income benefit’ as an alternative. This pays out a regular income until the end of a specified period, rather than a lump sum, and may cost less than you think. Critical illness cover (CIC) pays out a lump sum if you contract any of a specified range of 40 to 50 illnesses and conditions, but these can vary considerably, making it hard to compare like with like. CIC can be sold as an extension to life assurance,

A survey by the Financial Conduct Authority in October 2017 revealed that just under onethird of the UK adult population has ‘low financial resilience to the risk of death, critical illness or long-term sickness'. Cover becomes cheaper, for example, if you are prepared to extend the period of time before the replacement income kicks in. Short-term income protection contracts that pay out for between two and four years offer another relatively affordable solution.
