BythetimeyoureadthistheDiamondRallywillhavebeenandgone.Thisevent wouldnothavehappenedwithoutthededicatedmembersofourbranchincluding theteamofpeoplethatcametotheworkingbeetogivetheclubroomsagood cleanup.Withapproximatelyfiftysixentriesthesedaysthisisagoodturnoutbut ifyoucomparetotenyearsagowewouldhavethatnumberforourPostrallywith peopletravellingfromWellingtontoNewPlymouthfortheevent.Itisgreattosee theamountofmembersfromourownbranchentering,therewillbeafullreport andlotsofphotosinthenextTourer.
Onthe5thofOctoberIwentdowntoLevintogiveatalkonmyIrishmantripand asalwaystheyhadagreatturnoutfortheirclubnightaround50peoplebutthe scarypartistheaverageageoftheattendancewasagoodtenyearsolderthanour averageofournormalattendees.

IattendedasBranchDelegateatthisyear’smeetingbackinAugust.With1800 memberslivingwithinthegreaterAucklandarea,itwashopedthatmanywould taketheopportunitytoattend.Alas,thiswasnotthecaseandtherewerenomore thanacoupleofdozengeneralmembersattheAGM.TheBranchDelegatesoutnumberedthemandnotallbranchessentarepresentative.Itappearsapathyis aliveandwell.Howevertherewasworktobedoneandherearesomeofthemore poignanttopics.

Thereisconcernoverthegrowingcostsfor25/35/50yearMembershipAwards andaDiscussionPaperhasgonetoeverybranchwithadecisiondeferreduntil theMarchExecutiveMeeting. OurSWAPMeetfornextyearwillhavetobeonSaturday30thSeptemberasthe waythecalendarhasfallen,CanterburywillholdtheirSWAPMeetonthefirst weekendofOctober.
RodBrayshawwasamemberofourbranchformanyyears,andhasbeentheClub’s Registrarforthelast27years.Highlyregarded,bothinNewZealandandOverseasas ourRepresentativeontheF.I.V.A.Itwaswithmuchsadnessthathehashadtostep downfromthepostduetoillhealth(adebilitatingstroke).Asuitablepresentation wasmadetohimwithastandingovationandmanyadampeyeintheroom.We,as members,oweahugegratitudetoRod,especiallyforhisworkingettingtheVIC systemimplementedandrecognisedbytheGovernment.
Therearenewlawsbeingimplementedforincorporatedsocieties.TheNationalOffice willforwardapaperonthisforallbranchestoactionwithregardtocomplyingwiththe newActanditsimplicationstoouroperation.
Ihadn’tbeentoanAGMsinceIorganisedthe1998eventinHastingswhileamember oftheHawkesBayBranch.Stillalotoffamiliarfacesnearly25yearson.TheClub appearstobeingoodheartandfinanciallysoundwithsomededicatedandtalented peopleatthehelm.

Hashimotocompletedafterthree strugglingyearsin1914hisfirstcar,called the DATcar. ThenameDATcarwasderivedfromthe lastnamesofthemajorinvestorsof Hashimoto: Den, Aoyamaand Takeuchi.
1914 DAT car ThecompanybecameinitiallyknownasDatsun,whichbecamelaterNissan.Until the30sDatsunwasnotabletoproducecarsinlargenumbers.Becauseofthis,most carsinJapanwereimported.Onlythe richestwereabletoaffordtheirowncar.

1917 MitsubishiModelA Envisionedasaluxuryvehicleforhighechelongovernmentofficialsandtopexecutives, theModelAhadtobereliable,comfortable,andashowcaseofJapanese craftsmanship.
BasedontheFiatTipo3,itwasafour-doorseven-seatsedanusingatowncarbody stylepoweredbyafront-mounted26kW(35hp)2.8-litrestraight-4enginedrivingthe rearwheels,andwascapableofspeedsupto60milesperhour(97km/h).22were builtatthecompany'sKobeshipyard,includingprototypes,between1917and1921. Becauseitwasexpensivetoproduce(itwasbuiltentirelybyhand,withtheinterior rearcompartmentfurnishedwithlacqueredwhitecypress)itcouldnotcompetewith cheaperAmericanandEuropeancompetition,andMitsubishihaltedproductionafter fouryears.ConcentratinginsteadonitssuccessfulFusocommercialvehicles,the ModelAwouldbethecompany'slastpassengercaruntiltheMitsubishi500of1960.

Commissionedformilitaryusebythe Japanesegovernmentin1934,itwasthefirst Japanese-builtsedantohavefull-timefourwheeldrive. Fourworkingprototypeswere built,andaversionwasindevelopmentusing Mitsubishi's6.7litre,70PS(51kW;69hp) powerplant,Japan'sfirstdirectinjection dieselengine.
However,theentirePX33projectwascancelledin1937afterthegovernmentdecided toprioritizeMitsubishi'smanufacturingcapabilitiesoncommercialdevelopmentof trucksandbuses.In1937,anotherJapanesecompanyTokyuKuroganeKogyobegan productionofasmallerfour-wheeldrivecarcalledtheKuroganeType95.

ThefirstLanchesterwasremarkableinthatlikethe firstBenz,itwasdesignedfromthegroundupasa motorcar,notasanadaptationofthehorse carriage,andinthatitwasahomogenous mechanicalentity,owingnothingtothepracticeof thestationaryengineanditspowertransmission.In thelatterrespect,theLanchesterwasunique:the powerunitandbelttransmissionoftheBenzwere

Aboveandbelow:191440hpLanchester handfulweremade,thiscarwasalandmark becauseitwasthefirstLanchestertohaveits engineintheconventionalposition,covered byabonnet.(ItwastheonlyLanchesterto becalledasportscar,andhaveasidevalve engine).FromitwasdevelopedtheForty, whichwasatfirstthesolemodeloffered.Its six-cylinder,6.2-litreenginewasmadeinunit withits3-speedepicyclicgearbox,andhadan overheadcam.Thesprings,half-ellipticat thefrontandcantileverattherear,wereunderslung.Wormdrivewasretained.This wasaveryfast,veryexpensivecarintheRolls-Royceclass,it'smakersfeltboundto widentheirnet.Latein1923thereappearedtheTwenty-One,whichwasascaleddown,simplified,modernisedForty.Its6-cylinderenginewasof3.1litres,ithada4speedsliding-piniongearbox,andfrontwheelbrakeswerestandard.In1926thebore wasenlarged,toprovide3.3litres.Inthisformthecarwassometimesknownasthe Twenty-Three.Alongsideit,theForty(withfrontwheelbrakesfrom1925)continued until1929.ItwasreplacedinthatyearbytheThirty,whichwasanup-to-datedesign withastraight-8engineof4½litres,stillwithoverheadcamandanormal4-speed gearbox.LiketheForty,itwasamassiveandmagnificentcaridealforhighspeed cruising.TheTwenty-Threewasdroppedin1931,whentheB.S.A.groupof companies,inwhichDaimleralreadyprovidedalineofluxurycars,tookover,although theThirtywasstillcataloguedin1932.Fromnowon,thenameofLanchesterapplied toalineofmuchcheaper,smallercars,beginningwiththe15/18hp.Thishada2½ litre,pushrodoverheadvalve,6-cylinderenginedesignedbyGeorgeLanchester, hydraulicbrakes,andtheDaimlerfluidflywheel.Itwasagoodcarinitsclass,butlike

FourweresuppliedtoKingGeorgeVI. Thefirstpost-warLanchesterwasa 4-cylindertenof1.3litresonpre-1939 lines,butlikeallLanchesterstocomeit wasreplacedfor1952byanewFourteen, witha2litre,4-cylinderengineand
1933-1936Lanchester-onlytenwereevermade fluidflywheel.Thiscarwasbasicallya DaimlerConquestwithtwofewer cylindersandwasthelastLanchesterto qualifyasaseriousproductioncar.In 1953-1954,atleastoneDauphinwas made.Thiswasatrueluxurycar, consistingofa6-cylinderDaimlerengine inaFourteenchassis,surroundedbya luxuriouscoachbuiltbodybyHooper; pricewasanunrealistic£4,010.Finally, later1954,Lanchesterprovideda
1951TenSportsbodysaloon completelynewandoriginaldesign,which wasalsotheirlast-theSprite. Theenginewasanoverheadvalve 4-cylinderunitof1.6litres,thebrakes werehydraulic,buttheSprite incorporatedunitaryconstructionofbody andchassisandfullyautomaticHobbs transmissioninsteadofthefluidflywheel. TheSpritewasneverputintoproduction, andtheoncegreatandalwaysrespected nameofLanchesterdied.

Aftera35ishyearabsencefifteenmotorcyclesfromagoodcrosssectionofthe North-Islandgatheredattheclubroomsforan11amstart.Withaniceride headingfirsttoGroveRoadthenthroughColytontotheedgeofFeildingheadingto MakinoRoad,upMcKaysLinetoBeaconsfieldthenbackacrosstoKimboltonRoad, thenzigzaggingourwayuptoKimboltonavoidingthegravelbackroadsandas straightasitcanbethroughtotheApitipubforagreatlunch.
AfterlunchwasthecompetitivesectionatimedloopnorthoutofApitiuparound thetopthenbackdownthroughRangiwahiapastCrosshillsGardensthenleftinto theApitiRoadwiththeendofthetimedsectionbackoutsidethepub. MynavigatorforthedaywasmySouthAfricanneighbourRobinwhowas thoroughlyenjoyinghisscenictripintheChev.Afterthetimedsectionwewent northforafewmilesthenintoPohanginaValleyeastroad-sadlythisisallsealed now,butgreatformotorbikes,aftergettingontoValleyroadandcheckingthe odometerontheChevwehadcovered135miles,doaquickpetroltop-uponthe sideoftheroad(Icouldseethebottomofthetank)wecarriedonbackthrough Hiwinuitotheclubroomsforashortpricegiving.Totopoffafantasticdaymostof uswenttoMurray’sBarinFeildingforacoupleofdrinksanddinner.
