Committee Chatter for Topical Torque

Hello Folks

Our 58th Annual Manga Moana Rally was a great success despite the low number of entries. The rally started at the Plymouth International Hotel car park and took entrants on a route that had two timed sections with the timing starting away from the start point and clearly showed where the timing sections started from. The 75-mile route was over all tar sealed roads in the eastern and northern areas including the Tarata saddle and the Otaraoa road tunnel, the Bertrand Road Swing bridge and hills and valleys of Lepperton with excellent scenery. The Clubrooms were used for the lunch stop and finish of the Rally. The prize giving Dinner was held at the Plymouth Hotel on the Saturday night. Many Thanks to the staff at the Plymouth for an excellent meal and the set up for our presentations. Congratulations to member's Robert and Heather Tudor who were the overall winners of the 58th Maunga Moana winning The Castle Cup,The Findlay Cup, The Kirkby Trophy,The Bowman/Bogunda Trophy and the Colleen Moore Cup. A full list of placings is elsewhere in this newsletter.

We have now water blasted the entrance to the clubrooms and have painted the pillars and posts white and added reflecting tape to make it more identifiable especially at night when turning into the clubrooms. We have also removed and cleared all the agapanthus from the gate entry.

We welcome the following new members to our club. Patrick Frost who owns a 1963 Vanguard and Jill Emery who has a 1982 Corvette and Brian Goldsworthy who owns a 1988 Honda Motorcycle. We hope you enjoy our club. Our AGM will be held on May 18th so please start thinking of the committee positions as we have been running with three positions that did not fill this year. It’s your Club and it needs you to step up and help run the club with new blood and new ideas.

I'm looking at organising a meet up of Taranaki Triumph car owners, anyone interested can contact me on my mobile

BRANCH NEWS

NATIONAL EXECUTIVE MEETING

CHRISTCHURCH, MARCH 4TH 5TH 2023

A few points of interest taken from the minutes of the meeting, compiled by Rob T

Next International Rally. Bids have been received from Nelson, Hawkes’ Bay, and Waikato.

Membership Statistics.

Currently 19.5% of the membership are under 59, 25.9% are over 60, 38.2% are over 70. 14.9% are over 80, and 1.04% are over 90. Total membership 8537 as at 23 Feb.2023.

Management Committee.

President Diane Quarrie advised the meeting of the 7 Management Committee positions to become vacant in August next. Those who are standing down are Diane herself; North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie; South Island Club Captain Alon Mayhew; Executive Member Tony Bartlett; and Speed Steward Tony Haycook. The position of Hon. Sec/Treasurer is already vacant and is proving to be a position difficult to fill. Committee member, George Kear, has been nominated for the position of President, this would mean a committee position becomes vacant.

National Office.

Committee member Murray Trounson briefed the meeting on procedure and process updates at National Office. The New Membership Application portal is now working well and will be followed by other changes to procedures as we become more attuned to the digital age. The efficiency of the two staff, Linda and Karen, manning the National Office was noted, they are taking on some of the Hon. Sec/Treasurer responsibilities in the absence of a National Sec/Treasurer. [As your current Branch Sec/Treasure, my experience when needing to make contact with either of the two ladies has been 101%]

NZTA and FOMC.

12-month WOF. Very slow progress is being made on this subject. [We may get a better idea of the progress this possible change in regulation is making with Harry Duynhoven, as President of the FOMC, speaking at our April N & N.]

Incorporated Societies Act 2022.

Workshops at the AGM discussed Governance and Board Structure. As I understand, the Governance Structure of the VCC of NZ does not meet the requirements of the new Act. The structure of the executive has had various options proposed, the responses of the positive feedback received will be compiled and forwarded to Branches. A partial rewrite of the National Constitution will be necessary, which will be followed by any ‘tweaking’ to our Branch Constitution. The Branch will be required to renew its registration under the 2022 Act., though there is a very generous timeline to do this.

Hello Folks, well April looks to be a bit quieter, than March on the local scene with last month’s Maunga Moana Rally the main event on the Branch Calendar. Next month is our A G M so please give some thought to going on committee and giving some of our long serving members a break. Nomination forms for committee positions are at the back of this newsletter.

At this month’s committee meeting we discussed reactivating some Branch runs that had been neglected of late, for example the Brick and Breakfast runs. If any member would like to step up and organise either of these, they can be assured that any committee member can provide the information they might require to do this. Also discussed was the holding of Daffodil Day this year. Due to adverse weather generally in August, an alternative event, to be held in summer, was suggested, a Vintage event at the Wind Wand being one possibility.

This year in June, our usual End of Rego run to the Stratford Mountain House will be on Sunday the 25th, more info on this will be upcoming in future newsletters.

This month, on Tuesday 11, some of our members managed to get along to the Historic Speedway meeting in Fitzroy. We were addressed by a rep from Waka Kotahi, Caleb Perry, who spoke about the ongoing Mount Messenger Bypass project. This will be one of the biggest highway improvement projects in Taranaki for some time. It is planned to happen over the next four years and will involve the construction of approximately, 6.1 km of roadway, two bridges, 235 metres of tunnel under the mountain and the moving of about one million tonnes of fill.

If you have driven north recently, you will have seen the aerial cableway that is already in use. This will be used to move up to 20 tonne pieces of machinery onto the worksite and enable the removal of fill from the worksite.

To protect the native wildlife and environment there will be up to 250 km of traps and bait stations laid out to remove predators from the bush surrounds and supported by D O C, hunters will be used to remove wild pigs and goats from the area. There are over one hundred significant native trees to be removed, each of these will be replaced with 200 seedlings, and there will be 120,000 plants used to enhance the roadside environment.

The workforce to carry out this project will create about 74 new jobs, worth about 4 million dollars in salaries.

An information centre has been set up at the site and the public are welcome to visit this , located in the big shed near the road side, where you will be able to see the latest progress and ask any questions you may have.

Veteran/Vintage North Island Tour - 13-20 March 2023

Jim & Beryl Watson and Ron & Margaret Ingram, Taranaki Members, joined with other members from around the country, namely Upper Hutt, Gore, Waihi, Auckland, Lower Hutt, Warkworth & Tauranga to take part in this tour.

A BBQ dinner was held on Sunday 12th at the home of the organizers Phil & Coral Kidd at Upper Hutt so as to meet participants.

We began with nine vehicles but over the first few days two had to withdraw with mechanical problems leaving six cars, a Bedford truck and fourteen members. Tour began Monday – we were staying at Petone so headed to SH2 to go over the Rimutakas. It was steep and winding and down came the rain. Turned right on the outskirts of Featherston onto Western Lakes Road. Dry River Road was winding & gravel. Martinborough

was our lunch stop at a Café. On the way again Oxford, Hinekura Road, Longbush, Millars, Kokotau, passed through Carterton and to our destination Masterton for two nights.

Tuesday morning, we visited Francis Pointon’s museum – collection of cars, motor bikes, memorabilia and mannequins modelling Vintage wear. From there travelled to Riversdale Beach which was our lunch stop. Leaving there onto Homewood Road to Kaiwhata which was very steep and winding - many left & right turns and back to our accommodation.

From Masterton we were on Route 52 – road winding and gravel – never seemed to end –through Bideford and reached Pongoroa for our picnic lunch. Long stretch on Waihi Valley Road – to Towai Road through forestry and drove through the Limeworks onto Waitahara Road to Dannevirke our overnight stay.

Thursday – south onto SH2 – a short stop at Woodville – some had morning tea – Onto the Saddle Road very steep but a great view of the Wind Farm. Hunterville was lunch stop. It was then onto the Turakina Valley Road. A stop was madeM,at the Tangiwai Memorial to view the site. To Ohakune for our night’s stay.

Friday was raining. A stop at Horopito to visit Smash Palace was planned but very few went in. Called at National ParkM but Café closed so a decision was made to travel direct to Turangi for an early lunch and then onto Taumaranui meaning we missed out on going through the Pureora Forest with its many potholes which would have been full of water.

Saturday was a free day – four went on the rail carts – others drove to the lookout – some checked their vehicles – filling with petrol, oil etc. Dinner at the RSA was enjoyed by all.

Sunday we all left in convey – Right & left turn before we re-joined SH4 south of Owhango. We passed the famous Raurimu Spiral also the Makatoetoe Viaduct and the Obelisk marking the final spike in the North Island Main Trunk Line in 1908. Stopped at Raetihi – bought a huge scone – that was our lunch. Onto Seddon taking us through to Historic Pipiriki on the banks of the Wanganui River. Then to SH4 to Wanganui to overnight stay and last of tour.

Each night we enjoyed a Happy Hour at Phil & Coral’s unit – were handed out instructions for the next day and whoever had the Big Stirrer Spoon decided who was the next victim so one was always alert. We had a Red Double Decker bus arrive that took us all for a drive around Wanganui and stopped at the St. John’sClub for our final dinner together and then delivered us back to our Motel.

Thank you, Phil & Coral, for arranging the bus ride and the time organizing the tour. Well done.

Special thanks to all members and non-members who helped as check Marshalls at our rally. Thank You to Rob Thomson for his important work as Rally Secretary. And thank you to Peter Croot who was the timing Marshall and for the very professional way the results were presented.

The check Marshalls helped by recording the times and numbers of the entrants as they passed by without stopping. Thanks To Albie Gordge for clearing the Checks and gathering the check signs etc.

The lunch was held at the clubrooms with Rhonda and Wade Mcfarlane organising a BBQ lunch and tea and coffee. Thank you, Rhonda and Wade. Many Thanks to the 34 members and visitor members that entered this year’s event.
