I
t’s been said that you can fix pretty much anything with either duct tape or bailing twine. That certainly rings true for myself and my newest acquisition, a 1964 Oasis trailer I recently adopted and named “Helen Wheels”. I would not call Helen a “glamper” not by a long shot....she sports fine patina which I am not sure I plan to paint over, I like my toys a bit rugged and worn. Her screen door is patched together with duct tape and a bullet hole in her skin is decorated with a painted flower which I feel only ads character. My husband affixed a “full serve” service station sign to her door to cover what appears to be signs of an attack of a rather large animal. He likes to add a bit of a male flavor to our project and installed the sign with a wink and a smile. My favorite touches are the decoupage wallpaper inside I made Helen Wheels Interior
of cut out vintage magazine ads from the 1940’s and the hand sewn window treatments repurposed from vintage pillowcases and linens. The best part of her has got to be her smell...it’s a dusty worn grandma’s attic smell that is so distinct to her, that taking in her odor takes me back to horse camp or showing at the fair, like the smell of an old cabin from your childhood, her scent is that of memories..... Yes Helen has character, and I like to keep her colorful history and scars intact, oh the stories she tells. My daughter and I have added to her stories, hauling her to horse camps and the Spokane Interstate Fair. Helen has been featured in MaryJanesFarm magazine and always draws attention with her unique character and vintage decor. I hope you enjoy the Glamping feature in this year’s Vintage Directory by guest columnist Megan Butters Rae of MaryJanesFarm magazine, and find inspiration for your own glamper, vintage decorating and treasure hunting. Happy Junking!

Glamping
with Megan Rae
M
y mother’s mother was glamping far before we decided to start calling it that. The women of her generation were not shrinking violets, and my grandmother was no exception. They were wildflowers, ready to hit the road and live off the land. But at the same time, they saw no reason not to “rough it” in style. They fussed over and gussied up their campsites, giving rise to the glamping concept. I love my mom’s stories of my grandmother at camp. With her picnic table adorned in a freshly laundered and ironed tablecloth and a bouquet of hand-picked flora, she would stoke the fire, sauté veggies brought from her gardens back home, and grill the catch of the day from the water hole around the bend. Fast forward 50 years, and we’re still drawn to that floral vase we found while antiquing or those vintage salt and pepper shakers that match the camper perfectly. It should come as no surprise—it’s in our genetics to prettify our little plots, whether at home or at the campsite. It’s been done all along. Now it just has a definition. Glamping, defined: It’s the juxtaposition of grit and glam, rugged and reined in, burlap and lace. We’ve ditched the notion that camping is daunting, just as we’ve jettisoned the misconception that going “out there” means you have to give up creature comforts like a billowy-soft bed, stamped linens, and bubble baths. Proud of our natural pa-
8
nache, we dare to decorate our gypsy world of trailers and tents in our favorite happy colors. We dust off our prom dresses and hang them right next to our lanterns, loving the way the light dances through the lace. What’s more, we eat chocolate with abandon in the open air, trading traditional adventuring terms like “harsh” and “tough” for our own renditions of comfort, playfulness, and style. Of course, glamping also means we get to own our own campers if we’re so inclined. We’re capable of backing them up or changing a flat tire as easily as we change a nail polish color! As I said, glamping is in my genes, making its way from my grandmother to my mother, and on to me. But, back before choosing a color palette for a camper was her thing, my mother, MaryJane Butters, worked for the U.S. Forest Service for many years. She’d spent her childhood camping in the Utah outback, so when it came time to venture out of Dodge, she headed straight for the mountains. She was ready, equipped with all of the knowhow she needed to get by, so she sought out a solo stint in a lookout tower watching for fires. Afterward, she worked as a wilderness ranger, which meant moving into a wall tent year-round, 27 miles in from the nearest dirt road. Her stories of winters in those days are wild; her tent would be walled in by five feet of snow each year, insulating her through bitterly
cold months. Working for the Forest Service, it didn’t take her long to realize that, while she could build a fence with the best of them, she also loved an immaculate, perfectly-organized tool shed and didn’t mind carrying a crisp hankie (complete with embroidered edges) in her back pocket. Shortly before I was born, Mom decided it was time for modern conveniences and bought the farmstead where I grew up. As her daughter, I might mention that her idea of conveniences were not entirely conventional. Luckily for me, though, her how-to-it-ness allowed her to run water to the house and plumb the entire thing herself. I never did get a flushing toilet in my childhood (an outhouse sufficed), and we bathed in a claw-foot tub in the kitchen closet. But we did have hot running water, and every seasoned camper knows what a luxury that is! Within our little outpost, there was always a home-cooked meal atop a beautiful tablecloth. The woodstove kept us warm on winter nights while we enjoyed a good book or family board game. The rest of the seasons were spent roaming outdoors, and it wasn’t unusual for my brother and me to bring home bouquets of wildflowers for the table. Needless to say, I grew up building a strong sense of DIY and a desire to be outdoors (with a few feminine frills for good measure). Thanks to my mother and my grandmother before her, glam-
ping was destined to become a big part of who I am, and I imagine my daughters will follow suit. Glamping is a grand tradition among women of all walks of life, and it’s regaining popularity in our modern age for good reason. We really aren’t that far from what our grandmothers once knew. For so many of us, the primal need to be outdoors is as real as it was in generations past, grounding us in an increasingly chaotic world. Our urge to nest and provide are also deep-seated connections to our adventurous ancestors. It’s so satisfying to channel these impulses into our campsites, arranging everything just-so and preparing fabulously fire-roasted meals for those we love. Glamping, I think, also fulfills our need to accomplish. Pulling a camper across the plains, backing her into place just perfectly, and building a campfire like a pro are skills that remind us how very capable we are. Each summer, as I’m loading up my red and teal vintage finds into our camper, making sure all the right tablecloths and doilies are clean and ready to go, I often think of my mom’s efforts to raise us ready for the world—the wild world, that is. It makes me wonder if another soul-nourishing component of glamping is the sense that I can get it right. Mom sure did. The simplicity of the task allows for perfection, or something close to it. For one weekend of glamping, I don’t have to think of the laundry that needs to be
done, so I can fully enjoy my perfect set of tablecloths. I don’t have much to sweep, I don’t need to mop, and I can’t vacuum, so I can take the time to hang the lights I want for the perfect campsite ambiance. And I really don’t have much else to do other than create a campfire meal, so I can get that right, too. I mean, let’s be real, food always tastes incredible eaten outdoors, so whatever I cook while glamping seems perfect. Then, there’s time to just be, to enjoy family and friends, to share the experience with your children (no homework!), and to relax quietly by yourself—things we never seem to have enough time for in our busy lives. If you’re an avid glamper and have been at it for some time, you’re nodding right now. You know. So, happy trails! I wish you glorious journeys, lovely linens, and the perfect salt and pepper shakers. If you haven’t glamped yet, I bet you’re daydreaming about what you might do with that set of dainty antique teacups you found last week, or the splashy color you could paint that old wicker chair that’s been sitting out in the rain, or how good it would feel to make that first pot of tea on a campfire you built yourself. True? Well then, I believe you’re ready to give it a try. Glamping is calling your name. You don’t have to have a camper, so don’t let that stop you. For many years, we pitched a tent, and those were terrific times. Your pretty tablecloth can
still grace a portable camp table, and a welcome mat for your tent entrance is nothing short of wonderful. If it’s warm enough, you don’t even need the tent. A starry sky makes the most divine backdrop for a summer glamping trip. Down the road, if you set your heart on the perfect color scheme for a camper, you can find a fixer-upper and doll her up (now that’s a sense of accomplishment, let me tell you). At last, you’ll feel free to paint the kitchen cabinets fuchsia. Tuck those antique teacups inside, and create a special corner for that wicker chair. Just remember that you’re encouraged and supported by all us girls who are in love with glamping. You can always find a gaggle of us gabbing on the Farmgirl Connection (MaryJanesFarm.org/snitz). If ever you have a question or an idea that needs some sculpting, pop on by and let ’er fly. Cheers to the journey! No matter where you go, it’ll be positively glamporous, guaranteed! MaryJane Butters is the author of Glamping with MaryJane and editor-in-chief of MaryJanesFarm magazine. Both Megan and MaryJane have spent countless hours glamping and antiquing together.

The Fairfield Grange Circa 2006, inset Serena Thompson and Family in Fairfield Circa 2005
T
ired of reading about antiques and vintage shows that only existed in other parts of the country and dreaming of creating something special here on the west coast, stay at home mother of four Serena Thompson dreamed of an event where antiques and vintage would be offered along with handmade items merchandised with down home charm. She wanted it to be more than an event that just happened, she wanted it to be special, remembered, and anticipated, as a recurring event. In October 2002, her dreams came to fruition and the first tiny sale was held in her friend’s barn on a prairie outside of Spokane. She named it “The Spirit of the Farm Sale”. Serena and her friends worked for days filling the barn with their finds and decorating the stalls with greenery and wild blossoms. The women hung old signs on the walls and quilts all along the fence line. They set up elaborate checkout stations made of
old dough tables and used vintage pickling crocks to hold the merchandise bags. The creative women baked handmade mini pies, coffee cake, and cookies for an extra special homemade touch. As morning approached, bluegrass music happily played in the background while hundreds of shoppers lined up for the first event of its kind. When the gates opened, crowds rushed up the gravel drive, scooping quilts from the fence line as hundreds raced to the barn grabbing armloads of goods in a frenzy. It was a response unlike anything the modest promoters imagined, and the friends knew they had accomplished what they hoped for. The public loved the sale as much as the organizers loved putting it together. After the initial sale, Serena changed the name to The Farm Chicks and moved to a bigger location at The Five Mile Prairie Grange where two shows were held, followed by the city of Fairfield where the event took

over both city parks and the grange and continued to grow into a full blown juried vendor show of a much grander scale. Eventually after six shows in Fairfield, The Farm Chicks settled into the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center where it is held the first full weekend in June each year. One of the friends, Elaine Thompson, who participated in the first sale, is still a part of the show. Serena still dedicates her passion to creating an event that is unforgettably special, staying true to its country roots. Although it is now one of the biggest shows in the country, shoppers notice the special themes she creates for the show each year (this year’s theme is “Home Sweet Home”), the quality of each of the Curators she hand selects, and the all-around happiness in the air. Serena is celebrating 15 years of The Farm Chicks this year and she loves it just as much today as she did when it made its debut..
Serena Thompson is the founder and producer of The Farm Chicks, an author, and contributing editor of Country Living Magazine. You can follow along with her daily life on her Facebook and Instagram pages (The Farm Chicks) and her website www.thefarmchicks.com. The Farm Chicks is held annually at the Spokane County Fairgrounds the first full weekend of June.

What’s New In Vintage
by Rachael Jean
After working overtime as Executive Director of a non-profit, Gina Mauro Campbell realized that if she was going to continue to work so many hours, she’d rather work for herself. When the perfect space became available on North Monroe, she jumped on the opportunity. Gina’s creative partner, Jamie Flanery, is a long-time vintage picker and builder who shares Gina’s passion for repurposing items that are worn out and transforming them into something functional, giving them new life. When the two discovered they shared a common love of vintage, they decided to team up and open 1889 Salvage Co in September 2016. The store also includes a few vendors which add an eclectic mix of different styles and genres to the shop. 1889 Salvage Co offers affordable custom designs for customers in need of a unique piece. In addition, Gina offers vintage styling for events and will rent pieces for events, photography shoots, etc. If someone doesn’t find what they are looking for at 1889 Salvage Co, the owners are happy to be on the lookout for that piece and call them if it is found.
Tucked around the corner in a circa 1907 restored building in the historic North Monroe vintage shopping District in Spokane, is one of the district’s newest shops, Shiloh Vintage Home. Owner Mary Requejo has operated vintage/antique businesses in both Virginia and California, and decided that she wanted to restore and paint furniture again here in Spokane. She started selling her projects on Craigslist and then in May, 2014, became a vendor in Paint in my Hair. Mary transitioned into her own storefront in October 2016. Still holding a full time job elsewhere, her store hours are limited to oneday sales a few times a month. Mary plans to have regular business hours beginning early spring 2017. Mary’s husband Al, is her silent partner and muscle; helping with the more mundane parts of creating and running a business. Mary specializes in designing signature pieces; items that will be a conversation piece in the room. Although she has a love for painted furniture, she is also drawn to industrial and mid century pieces. Mary focuses on curating “one-of-a-kind”, quality items that will complement a variety of different decorating styles. 1889 Salvage Co is located at 2209 N She enjoys catering to men as well by Monroe Street Spokane, WA, Open providing interesting and unique déMon-Fri 10-6, Sat 11-5. cor with a more masculine appeal. In the spring of 2015, Paul Badeaux acquired a shop on Monroe street in Spokane and in February of 2016, Dick Acker joined Paul and became an equal partner in the business. The partners spent the next eight months remodeling and upgrading to the store while acquiring inventory items for when it opened. They decided to re-brand the store with a new image and named it Marilyn’s On Monroe to mirror the upscale image the owners envisioned for their new store. Although the background of each partner is quite diverse and not what one would expect for an antique dealer, together they bring over 90 years of life and business experience to the table as well as years of collecting. Paul had been successful contractor, owning his own construction business - Cajun Construction. For the past 24 years Dick has been the director and founder of People For Christ Ministry which is a non profit outreach music ministry which promotes Christian concerts and events. Rather than go into full retirement and fish the rest of their lives, both Paul and Dick wanted to continue to work and perhaps start a new business. The men work together to bring us one of the newest upscale antique, vintage and collectibles shops on Monroe. Both have been intensely involved in all aspects of this new business and have found some
real treasures of the past few years. The slogan for the new store is “The best for less”. The partners strive to maintain an inventory of high end and unique antiques and specialty items for sale at significantly lower prices so that all who aspire to collect such treasures can afford to do so. Marilyn’s on Monroe is located at 3111 N Monroe Street, Spokane, WA Open Wed-Sat 10-5 and Sundays 1-5. Angi Decker began making jewelry and “vintage-looking” accessories 24 years ago. She was living in Southern California at the time and while shopping in a high end department store a buyer pulled her aside and asked where she had purchased what she was wearing. Angi explained that she had made all the accessories herself. The buyer instantly inquired about a buy and placed a large order with her. Angi has been supplying the store along with six other chain stores ever since. Although she was thrilled to be paid well doing something she loves, she always enjoyed renting spaces in local shops to get direct feedback from shoppers in her community. After much encouragement from friends and a final nudge from her husband, David, in early 2016 they decided to open Re-Charmed In Post Falls. Angi’s inspiration for the shop was as a gathering place to encourage and
inspire others to express themselves with their home or office decor. She enjoys giving personal attention to her clients, encouraging them to “explore creative dressing” through her line of clothing called ‘Free Spirit’ accented with whimsical accessories designed in her custom jewelry bar. Re-Charmed features one of a kind vintage and handmade merchandise, and is filled with ideas to inspire. The shop also offers a Gathering Loft for baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, bunko nights, bible studies, book clubs, ladies night out and organized classes. Re-Charmed is located at 1003 N Spokane Street, Post Falls, ID and is open Mon-Sat 10-5. As long as she can remember, Cheryl-Lynn Lundmark felt most comfortable in nostalgic spaces with a nod to the past. Once she moved to Spokane in 1991, she met a friend who shared her passion for hunting that “perfect” treasure and the competition began. Looking for a way to share the items she’s cherished for over 30 years, last December, Cheryl-Lynn opened 509Vintage in a charming 1948 cottage storefront off Dishman Mica Road in the Spokane Valley next to the Trellis Marketplace. Cheryl-Lynn uses her past experience as a merchandiser and stylist to pair unusual and unique items into vignettes that inspire creativity. Each of her treasures has a story, a history, a previous life. “It’s fun to imagine who, when and how everything was used” states Cheryl-Lynn. 509Vintage is located at 4042 S Bowdish Road, Spokane Valley, WA, open Tues-Sat 11-5 Bill Black is a retired Marine Corps ‘mustang’ that served in WWll, Korea & Vietnam. He and Jody, his wife of 50 years, established The Heirloom Hunter antiques in the late 1970’s. This successful enterprise was spotlighted in many Antiques Malls from California to Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Nevada.
When Bill culminated his career with the Retired Officers Association in 1996, he joined Jody in her antiques venture. They moved to Coeur d’ Alene in 2015. Due to advancing years and vast personal gatherings of fine antiques and collections over the years, they decided to open their own operation in Hayden, ID. Their establishment The Heirloom Hunter Collection, is located in a charming old yellow cottage across from Capones Pub & Grill on North Government Way and Hayden Ave. They proudly showcase a wide array of unique heirlooms that span centuries, and unique eras for customers of varied tastes and interests. The store features a selection of quality taxidermy, a lovely boutique of vintage designer & couture and a rare collection of 1930’s Mickey Mouse collectibles. As a special attraction, they offer Spokane’s famed Bruttles gourmet confections. The Heirloom Hunter Collection is located at 9551 N Government Way Hayden, ID, Open Wed-Sat 10-4. Jeff and Heather Caton have been buying and selling for years prior to moving to Coeur d’Alene from Oregon a few years ago. The couple’s house was bursting at the seams so they decided to open a shop. The 5,000 square foot Looking Glass Antiques in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho opened May 16th on busy 4th street next to Ace Hardware and across from Goodwill. The Store features an eclectic group of vendors and Jeff and Heather pride themselves on having unique, one of kind items in their store. The shop’s 40+ vendors and 2 dozen consignors stock not just antiques, but collectibles of all kinds, vintage items, unique hand made pieces and home decor. If they have never seen it before, they want it in their store! Looking Glass Antiques is located at 1204 N. 4th St Coeur d’Alene, ID, Open Mon-Sat 10-6, Sunday 12-5
Claudia Hon and Cathy Klontz wanted to create a store where they would want to shop. The women have always been drawn to items with history, a worn patina, or a story to tell. The partners opened Oak Street Mercantile in November 2015 inside the destination location Foster’s Crossing Antique Mall, in the quaint town of Sandpoint, ID. The owners both have a background in hosting and promoting vintage shows and are joined by 10 additional vendors who create and find beautiful items for their spaces in the shop. This unique merchant features a wide variety of vintage decor, salvaged and repurposed items, jewelry, signs, milk paint, plus vintage and new apparel. The inventory changes daily, and it all flows together to create a great and inspiring environment. Oak Street Mercantile is located at 504 Oak Street Sandpoint, ID Open Mon-Sat 10-5:30, Sun 11-4. Heather Bailey just a country girl living in the small town of Bonners Ferry, Idaho who loves collectables, upcycling and handcrafting, so much that she has spent the past 30 years of her life setting up booths at shows. In the summer of 2016 Heather opened her own shop This Old Trunk in historic downtown Bonner’s Ferry. The quaint town features shopping and eating establishments making it a tourist destination. This Old Trunk carries a bit of everything with inventory changing regularly to keep it interesting. Heather loves to see all the great finds her vendors bring into the shop. The store boasts a large selection of miniatures, collectables, crafting items, home décor, and country refinished furniture. The store is still growing and is accepting vendors looking for small town rates. This Old Trunk is located at 7219 Main Street, Bonner’s Ferry, ID Open Tues-Sat 10-5
his finds for years. In September 2016 Dan’s dreams became a reality opening his own shop Dr. D’s Treasures in the center of Spokane’s Historic Hillyard District. Dr D’s has something for everyone, toys, tools, electronics, vintage, home goods, antiques, furniture, and so much more. His goal is to have items priced to sell, his shop continuously filled with new items for his regular customers. Dr. D’s Treasures is located at 5015 N Market Street, Spokane, WA, Open Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 11-4. Kimberly Lee always dreamed of owning her own shop, and when the store which she was a vendor in decided to close up, Kimberly was given the opportunity to take over. With the blessing of her husband Chuck, and the help of her children Hannah and Kaden, Kimberly officially took over Junk’n Chic and opened as Becoming Vintage in August 2016. The shop is truly a family affair with her children working in the store from time to time. In addition to their own curated items and refinished furnishings, the shop boasts a variety of vendors who compliment each other with fun and eclectic inventory. Although the shop is merchandised like a boutique, the prices are thrift store low. Becoming Vintage specializes in up cycled and repurposed goods making items unique, one of a kind, and extremely affordable. The store also stocks chalk based paints, waxes and supplies and teaches group workshops. Becoming Vintage is located at 4801 N Market Street Spokane, WA and is open Wed-Sat 11-5, Sun 12-4.
