t’s been one of those years, a year of loss, a challenging year filled with economic instability, sickness and fear. I will have to say I’ve been in all the stages of grief over the economic and social devastation brought on by the pandemic. First was denial combined with anger, was it all political? Then, it happened, my mentor and fellow publisher Vince Bozzi, publisher of Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living Magazine and his wife Emily succumbed to the virus. Vince was a delightful soul who gave me helpful advice and encouragement, he and Emily will be deeply missed. The shock of loss rippled through my soul and depression set in, the big sad. I am the quintessential optimist, looking for the good in every cloudy day, but I have come to acceptance that this new corona virus will affect us well into 2021. This pandemic has challenged us all, and devastated the small business community especially the markets and events. Because we do not know when events will be allowed to resume, the 2021 event calendar will be online only, and not featured in the printed directory this year. When events and markets re-open you can find an updated event calendar online on my blog rachaeljeanvintagefarmgirl.wordpress. com. You can subscribe to the blog, or the e-mail newsletter for regular updates, or follow Rachael Jean Vintage Farmgirl on Instagram or the Vintage Directory Facebook page. We are a resilient community that emerged out of the Great Recession, finding money making opportunities selling people’s literal garbage we now affectionately call “Junk”. Like then, we have learned to make do and find opportunities in difficult times. When the reality of the virus settled in, vintage loving crafters sprung to action sewing cloth masks and face coverings to help fight the pandemic. The only part of this plague I remotely en-
joyed was seeing all the colorful and creative handmade face coverings and masks. One of the creatives, Kara Ereaux of Karavan Reclothery, found herself depressed and jobless during the pandemic, and decided to sell the masks she was crafting for her family as a diversion. Kara loaded her cart with thrifted finds and went to work deconstructing men’s shirts. “I started with masks, but I’m making patterns for bags, skirts, boot covers, scarves etc. I have this crazy love of all things well-used, the compulsive need to create, and an immediate need to justify my existence.” States Ereaux. In response to community need, Midtown Home and Vintage Market in Coeur d’Alene, offered a wide variety of locally handmade masks from three different vendors. Vanessa Bean, owner of Paw Kids LLC, one of Midtown’s three vendors, donated over 100 masks to essential workers to help fight the invisible enemy. As spring unfolds, I see a glimmer of renewal. Like the first crocuses erupting through the snow, two new shops bravely opened their doors late 2020. The Great Northwest Vendor Mall and True Love Vintage Market opened last year, find them listed in the Spokane Valley section. We also have a new event to our area joining us this year, the well-known ‘Vintage Market Days’ event will have its debut in Coeur d’Alene July 16-18 at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. Once this unforgettable pandemic is behind us, we will surge forward with growth and creativity once again. In response to the changing marketplace, The Vintage Directory will rebrand in 2022 to The Cottage Directory to expand to all things, vintage, handmade AND Local! I look forward to a new day.
