he Spokane region is bustling with creativity, rooted in traditional values, yet open to fresh trends imported by the growing and changing human landscape. The gem we call the Inland Northwest has been discovered, a destination for residents looking for a new location to call home. In addition to spurring a great migration, the pandemic has put a magnifying glass on modern society’s shortcomings. The industrial machine has fractured, not a single sector is left unaffected. Impacted local small businesses that managed to stay afloat after being ordered to shut down for the better part of 2020 found themselves starting over. This starting over fresh allows a business or family to reset, although frustrating, it is a good thing. A mother re-prioritizes her family after a pandemic lay off and kindles a creative spark for a home based business, a business running on auto pilot must reinvent themselves with a fresh outlook. The pandemic gave us all a pause for self-exam4

ination. Many were offered new opportunities to incubate a business idea at home while laid off or otherwise displaced due to the pandemic. The Vintage Directory and its major advertisers were greatly affected by pandemic restrictions and event shut -downs, many show promoters were permanently shuttered. As publisher, I have taken this slow down as and opportunity to reset, re-design and re-brand. The Vintage Directory is now the Cottage Directory and has expanded to cover more than just vintage, but all local, handmade and cottage businesses in the greater Spokane area. A publication by a micro business with a staff of one, for all small retail, food and experience businesses. During this pandemic induced pause, I was able to discover my true purpose for publishing and reflect on why I will continue despite such a hard hit. I will admit I almost gave up, but I did get support from my loyal advertisers and even some new advertisers
you see in this issue and decided to keep trudging ahead. I discovered my purpose for doing what I do. I am inspired by the makers and artists in the region who create beauty to share with the public, while earning a living and caring for their families. The “Proverbs 31” women who hustle on the side while staying home with their children, the young people with entrepreneurial creative spirits, the laid off employees who used the pandemic to launch a new home based business idea they had been dreaming of but lacked the time. I believe in small, micro businesses are healthy for the community. When a company gets too big (or the government, nonprofit, church) it loses its soul. Everything

becomes a system, scaling becomes the goal, efficiency becomes priority over relationships. We do need balance, the only way to fight corporate resource consolidation and the negative effects of the pandemic is to shop small, support small, and be small. From your local small farmer raising meat in a sustainable and humane manner to local artisans handcrafting furniture, clothing or home decor, to those who hunt amongst the discarded to repurpose or resell. I am so excited for the local small businesses that are flourishing and growing, eliminating the rat race and working in their workshops selling locally made items in their own “factory” pouring their souls into what they do. This is what “made in the USA” is about, not sweatshops abroad, and box stores loaded with imported cheaply made mass market goods, but workshops in our hometowns employing locals. Artisans who handcraft unique conversation pieces for local consumers. Jill Little, owner of True Love Home+ in the
Spokane Valley has been a part of the cottage crafting and repurposing community since 2012. She explains the appeal of the local business community in her life. “I love the relationships formed with my customers and others within the made local community, and the opportunity to create beauty in my life and in the life of others.” states Little. Jill’s 16 year old son Zakkary has followed his mother’s creative and enterprising spirit. Zakkary designs and crafts handmade botanical decor to be hung on rear view mirrors. These pieces have been very popular in his mother’s shop. This is the vibe of the new publication “Cottage Directory” a magazine for local makers and finders to connect with consumers who prefer to keep it local and “cottage”. A guide for people to find items to curate their lives with unique beauty created or found locally. I chose the descriptive title based on the nostalgia and charm a cottage style home evokes, the aesthetic of the cottagecore vibe
made popular on social media , combined with the idea of “cottage industry” which is a small-scale, decentralized manufacturing business often operated out of a home rather than a purpose-built facility. All of the advertisers support these home based industries by offering vendor spaces in their shops or shows. I will not take ad dollars from businesses that do not carry anything sourced locally. My vision for the Cottage Directory is a once a year guide to hyper local, small batch, sustainable products, handmade, repurposed and found goods, and hopefully local farm to table dining opportunities and food brands. Cheers to new adventures and I look forward to working with the local handmade community!
