OCTOBER 1, 1977: Soccer Star Pele Plays Farewell Game
President John F. Kennedy advised American families to build bomb shelters to protect them from atomic fallout in case of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. By 1962, the world hovered on a full-scale nuclear war when the Cuban Missile Crisis erupted over the USSR’s placement of nuclear missiles in Cuba. During the 13-day crisis, some Americans prepared for war by buying canned goods and completing last-minute work on their backyard bomb shelters.
Before the 1920s, the radio was primarily used to contact ships that were out at sea. Radio communications were not very clear, so operators relied on Morse code messages. This was of great benefit to vessels in the water. During World War I, the importance of the radio became apparent and its usefulness increased significantly. In the 1920s following the war, civilians began to purchase radios for private use.

Former President Gerald Ford grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and eventually played football at the University of Michigan where he was voted most valuable player in his senior year. He also coached for Yale University while pursuing his law degree. After graduating in 1941, Ford worked as a model, which is how he met his future wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Bloomer. Ford went on to serve in World War II from 1942-1945.
During a downpour, 75,646 fans packed Giants Stadium for the farewell soccer game for Pele, considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of all time. Pele’s farewell was a media spectacle. In addition to U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and sports legend Muhammad Ali, 343 reporters, 168 photographers, 165 media personalities, and 90 film crew members attended. After embracing Pele, Ali yelled, “Don’t forget – you and I are the two greatest in the whole world!”

His staff are very kind people, they make you feel very comfortable. The procedure was amazing, and Simple, I was surprised at how simple it was. Plus, I didn’t have to have surgery! You know with a back as bad as mine, riding in a car can be very painful, every crack and bump in the road you feel. I was amazed on the way home from his office, how much better the car ride was. I am three weeks out and I am up and walking, I feel great!

Another study first reported at AAIC focused on diet and found that people who consume the highest amount of ultra-processed foods have a 28% faster decline in cognitive scores, including memory, verbal fluency, and executive function, compared to those with lower consumption. This study adds to the growing evidence that what we eat can impact our brains as we age, and many studies suggest it is best to eat a heart-healthy diet low in processed foods, and high in whole nutritional foods like vegetables and fruits.

to help reduce stress as the disease progresses is to plan ahead. “Care planning needs to be in place when you first figure out something is going on. If you wait until your loved one is already into the middle stage of the disease, it’s much more stressful,” said Jacob Guinan, Community Outreach Coordinator. “You don’t want to be building the plane as you fly it.”

When daily care and disease progression weigh heavily on family and friends, it can be difficult to look toward the future. However, several studies presented at the 2022 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) offer hope for treatments and care for people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementia.
One study, called EXERT, found exercise has the potential to slow or even halt the progression of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and earlystage disease. After 12 months, study participants with MCI in both the aerobic exercise intervention group and the stretching group showed no cognitive decline. A comparison group of other older adults with MCI from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, who experienced neither of the EXERT interventions, showed significant cognitive decline over 12 months. It is well known that exercise is good for both the body and mind, but the findings from EXERT are especially important because they suggest that regular physical activity, even modest or low exertion activity such as stretching, may protect brain cells against damage.

than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 67,000 Oklahomans. Over 129,000 Oklahomans are caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease, providing 244 million hours or roughly $3.8 million in unpaid care each year. The responsibilities of round-the-clock care take an immense toll on caregivers, but there is help available.
REDUCING CAREGIVER STRESS
Caregiver and support group leader Dave Zucconi connected with the Alzheimer’s Association when his wife was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. “Someone was always willing to help; the support is out there,” he said.
Outreach coordinators in each Alzheimer’s Association chapter can connect caregivers with resources to help manage their stress and provide support through educational programs, including learning the signs of Alzheimer’s, how to communicate with your loved one at different stages of the disease, and how to set up legal and financial plans for the future.

While it’s commonly assumed that cognitive decline is a part of aging, a group of “cognitive superagers,” individuals who are 80 years old and beyond, are defying that expectation. These superagers perform as well on memory tests as people who are decades younger. Their brains seem to resist wear and tear better than the average brain, showing less atrophy and volume loss and a higher density of a particular cell called von Economo neurons.
complex organ regulates every process in our body – from thought, memory, and emotion, to motor skills, vision, and breathing. While much has been learned about the way our brains function, and sometimes fail to function, there remains a lot we don’t know about the intricacies of the roughly three-pound bundle of tissue that resides in our skull. However, as technology continues to advance and the pace of research in neurological and behavioral science increases, new discoveries are made every year.

How we think about a healthy brain is changing. Of course, brain health can simply mean the absence of disease and injury, but it’s also about the factors that make and keep our brains healthy. This includes not only our cognition, but also our wellbeing,
social interactions, and daily routine. By understanding what behaviors support brain health, we can make better decisions throughout our life.

BRAIN HEALTH
Environment may be a factor. Enriching and challenging educational and occupational experiences seem to help brains stay sharper for longer. Social connections with family and friends appear to increase brain resilience, too, and genetics may also play a role.

The National Institute on Aging is funding research into superagers to learn what sets these people apart. The hope is to determine what factors promote sustained cognitive health that can become strategies everyone can use.
Do these superagers start out in life with larger, stronger brains? Or do their brains have stronger defenses against the assaults of aging? Understanding why superagers exist may eventually help us prevent or reverse age-related cognitive decline.
THE AGING BRAIN NEUROPLASTICITYAND
BY JULIE WENGER WATSON
Aging causes changes in every part of the body, including the brain. Although many changes in cognitive function, such as being slower to find words and recall names, are commonly associated with aging, there is growing evidence that the brain maintains the ability to change and adapt throughout life, allowing us to manage new challenges and tasks as we age. Until fairly recently, scientists believed this neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to modify connections and rewire itself, ended in early childhood. Research now shows that it continues much longer.
“What’s important is that your brain is not destined to go a certain direction. You have the ability to change and make your brain do different things.”

The brain’s ability to adapt and change even in our adult years means it continues to reorganize pathways and create new connections. This resiliency can help people recover from strokes and traumatic brain injury, enhance cognition, improve the ability to learn new things, and strengthen areas of the brain affected by age-related cognitive Engagingdecline.
question of how much exercise and what type seems to have been up for debate. Recent studies suggest that even modest amounts of exercise can positively impact your health as you age, and this is great news. No need to train for a marathon or a cross-country bike ride to make incremental improvements in your health, just start moving more. It’s that simple.
The physical benefits of exercise are important for healthy aging. Increased muscle strength helps maintain the ability to do everyday tasks, like carrying groceries and doing yard work, which ultimately leads to a better quality of life and more independence. Exercise reduces the risk of falling and fracturing bones. It also reduces the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and developing high blood pressure, colon cancer, and

“As you challenge yourself to try new things, and that can be at any age, your brain is literally making new connections and changes on a very microscopic scale,” Dr. Paulus said. “I think it’s really important that you continue to expose yourself to little challenges to keep your brain computing and learning to compute new things.”

The takeaway? You don’t have to become an endurance athlete to begin reaping the benefits of exercise. Even small increases in physical activity can improve your physical and mental health as you age. Don’t wait. Start moving.

“As our brain ages, lots of things happen. No one thing is overarching. There are many things. Inflammation, metabolism, and then connectedness, your cultural background, all of these things play a role,” Dr. Paulus said.

“Most evidence suggests that, from a structural point of view, whatever is good for the heart is also good for the brain. If you take care of your heart and your vessels, you’re also taking care of your brain,” says Salvador Guinjoan, M.D., Ph.D., Principal Investigator at LIBR.
The connection between heart health and brain health is becoming more evident. According to the American Heart Association’s 2022 update of the “Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics,” the same risk factors that contribute to making heart disease the leading cause of death worldwide also impact the rising prevalence of brain disease, including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. These findings suggest that reducing and controlling vascular disease risk factors not only improve your heart health but can also improve your brain health. The two go hand in hand.

“What’s important is that your brain is not destined to go a certain direction. You have the ability to change and to make your brain do different things that help the brain not age as it would otherwise. A lot of it is really up to the person to effect change and to have a better experience, improve your mental health, and improve how you feel. That is doable on so many different levels.”
Bingo can trace its roots to a 1530 Italian lottery but was popularized by a traveling toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe in 1929. Lowe discovered a game called “beano,” played by covering a numbered card with beans. He founded a toy and game company that changed the name to Bingo and later manufactured the dice game Yahtzee in 1956.

“I spent a lot of time running around exploring Tulsa when I came back; it was like a new world to me as Tulsa is just an amazing place. I got interested in finding ways to frame that Art Deco beauty and show some of this in great detail. Tulsa’s in the top three best collections of Art Deco architecture in the U.S. This kind of intricate detail, close up, is what makes a great jigsaw puzzle in shape, color, lines.”
The board game backgammon is one of the oldest games in existence, thought to have begun around 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. The Roman Emperor Nero is said to have gambled thousands while playing an early version of the game. An artifact resembling a checkers board was found in Iraq that dated back to 3,000 B.C. Chess was born from an Indian game called chaturanga before the year 600 A.D. The chess board we know today was standardized in the mid-1800s when it enjoyed great popularity in Europe.
The earliest known jigsaw puzzles are attributed to 18th-century cartographer John Spilsbury whose creations were originally called “dissections” of kingdom maps mounted on wood to educate the children of King George III. Manufacturing techniques evolved such as treadle-operated jigsaws and the ability to produce and layer thin slices of

Games are a way to indulge in formalized play with agreed-upon rules that mingle intellect and luck to create intriguing cultural interactions. Retired estate attorney Gale Allison witnessed her mother battle Alzheimer’s disease for two decades. Gale is proactive in maintaining sharp mental acuity by starting every day with Wordle, an extremely popular free online game from the New York Times. She and half a dozen friends share and compare prowess tips in the game that gives six guesses to solve the five-letter word of the day. As letters are eliminated, letters in the correct position light up in green (or may be in orange with settings at highcontrast), while letters in the wrong place light yellow. Letters not in the word of the day turn gray to prompt choosing different letters, eventually solving in six or fewer attempts. The app tracks scores, streaks, and gives percentage stats, providing a dopamine-rich sense of completion. If it’s not challenging enough for you, the settings allow for a “difficult” version.

There are three types of nerves in the PNS: sensory, motor, and autonomic. Sensory nerves communicate information from the five senses to the brain. Motor nerves travel in the opposite direction and tell your muscles what to do.

If you are among the 14% of Oklahomans who have diabetes, you’ve probably heard of a complication from that disease called peripheral neuropathy. Otherwise, the first time you hear of the condition may be when you’re diagnosed. Peripheral neuropathy occurs when there has been damage to the nerve network outside the brain and spinal cord, according to Dr. Ayushi Chugh, a Board-Certified Neurologist with fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine working with the Banner Medical Group in Arizona.

“There is no magic pill,” Dr. Chugh said. “Prevention is the best treatment of neuropathy.” When symptoms occur, treatment begins by identifying and treating the underlying cause. Most cases of peripheral neuropathy can’t yet be cured, so the goal is to treat the symptoms and manage pain. Physicians usually use a multidisciplinary approach with lifestyle modification, nutrition, exercise, physical therapy, and medical management of pain, anxiety and Over-the-counterdepression.
symptoms
It’s estimated that 25% to 30% of Americans will be affected by peripheral neuropathy. About 30% of diagnosed cases occur in diabetics, and 26% of cases affect adults over age 65, the neurologist said.
Symptoms vary depending on which type of nerve is damaged, but people commonly report a tingling feeling or a sharp, stabbing pain. Sensory neuropathy can cause numbness, burning or freezing pain, or the feeling that you’re wearing gloves or stockings. Motor neuropathy may cause muscle spasms and cramps or leave you with difficulty turning car keys and fastening buttons. Neuropathy can also cause problems with urination and elimination, digestion, and sexual functioning if the autonomic nerves are affected.
Peripheral neuropathy endangers an older adult’s independence if it interferes with basic skills like driving, cooking, and walking. The condition impairs how the brain receives information from the body and environment which can lead to stumbling, imbalance, and falls. “Patients over 65 years who have neuropathy have a highter fall risk than those who do not,” Dr. Chugh said.
HEALTHY LIVING It is always best to seek the guidance of your physician if you
Your body’s command center is called the nervous system. Nearly every thought, movement, and process originate from the central nervous system (CNS) which includes the brain and spinal cord. Signals travel to other parts of the body through the peripheral nervous system (PNS). You can think of the PNS as a kind of highway system that the brain uses to exchange information with the skin, muscles, organs, and glands.
When the nerve cells of your PNS are damaged, communication between the nerves and your body no longer works correctly, and symptoms of neuropathy begin to surface. Although diabetes is the most common cause, some of the other risk factors of metabolic syndrome (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity) and heavy alcohol use are also important causes. Neuropathy can also be caused by trauma such as an injury; infections like shingles or West Nile virus can cause less common but nevertheless debilitating forms of neuropathy; exposure to toxins such as certain drugs or chemotherapy, and autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Neuropathy can also be hereditary and part of the natural aging process.
NEUROPATHY SYMPTOMS
Autonomic nerves control automatic functions, such as breathing, digestion, and heart rate.

Some studies have researched medical marijuana as a tincture or cream, to help sleep, mood, and daily functioning in refractory nerve pain, but until there is more evidence, these therapies should be used with great caution by older adults, according to Dr. Chugh. For an older population, the risks of medical marijuana include dizziness, headache, psychiatric disturbances, and poor memory, she cautioned. She advised weighing the risks and benefits prior to use, if at all, under investigational trials or with experienced specialists only. Research is underway on the use of ketamine, an anesthetic that can be applied topically, and trials for nerve growth factors.

As with many chronic conditions, living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to ward off diseases that can cause neuropathy. While not everything is within our control, it is important to work with the things you can control. For example, if you have diabetes, it is vital to work with your doctor to keep your condition well-managed.

Physical and occupational therapy, acupuncture, exercise, and the use of electrical nerve-stimulating devices may also be prescribed. Dr. Chugh says patients can benefit from education on foot care, appropriate footwear, a daily foot inspection, and avoiding walking barefoot. Surgery may be appropriate for pinched nerves and nerve decompression, the doctor said, but all treatments have to be weighed against potential risks.

Although I do not ordinarily like fictional history, I have been a fan of Karen Joy Fowler since I read her first novel, “Sarah Canary,” in 1991. Her newest work of historical fiction is “Booth.” Wow. Just, wow.
Fowler has taken the true bones of the Booth family story and embellished it brilliantly with imagined detail. The book is long listed for the prestigious Man Booker Prize, and rightly so.
Bunkering With Books TWO AMERICAN FAMILIES
32 LIFE’s Vintage Newsmagazine | October 2022 www.LIFEseniorservices.org
This is the story of the 19th century family of Shakespearean actors headed by the famous Junius Booth, who played Richard III 579 times and was so vain that when he sees his own reflection in a mirror proclaims: “His dark eyes catch the lantern light and shine like a cat’s in the dark.” His beautiful, not-quite wife was stashed away secretly in a cabin in a dense forest outside of Baltimore and 10 children are born. Four died in infancy or childhood and the remaining family was hollowed by Thegrief.broken

The book has two compelling story lines. One is that of a 1970s frantic family embarrassed by mental illness, and the second story is the medical search for cause and treatment. Schizophrenia was long considered the fault of bad mothering (cold, perfectionist, anxious, over-controlling), and too often pharmaceutical treatment failed. Is schizophrenia a stand-alone disease or a symptom like a fever? If the cause is a genetic flaw, might prevention be available in a prenatal nutrient

“Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family” is a nonfiction book by awardwinning journalist Robert Kolker, a story too unbelievable to be anything but real life. Don and Mimi Galvin, the book jacket states, “seemed to be living the American dream.” After World War II,

through the family’s story, lightly at first, is an up-and-coming politician named Lincoln and the subject of slavery boiling toward Civil War. In the Booth family, only Johnny favors the Southern cause.
Don’s Air Force posting as an intelligence officer took them to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the Roman Catholic couple had 12 children, 10 boys and two girls.
The children were athletic and musical; the father studied at night for a Ph.D.; and the mother was a highly organized, stay-at-home mom who volunteered with an opera arts group and cooked all the family meals, including a pie, cake “or at least Jell-O with whipped cream” for every dinner. Incredibly, six of the boys, one after another, were diagnosed with schizophrenia.
These books about two American families are so powerful, I didn’t read them so much as consume them greedily, gulping down the stories while wanting to savor the words. They are different from one another, but each is riveting in style, substance, and story.
Fowler said she was inspired to write the book after one of America’s recent mass shootings. “I wondered about the families of the shooters –how would such a family deal with their own culpability, all the “if-onlys?’” she asks. “What happens to love when the person you love is a

Although it was still light out when we arrived at the drive-in entrance, we kids were already in our pajamas because Mom had a plan – get us kids to the drive-in early and let us wear ourselves out on the playground so we would fall
asleep quickly after the movie started. Then she and Dad could enjoy the movie undisturbed and put us directly to bed after arriving home. Unaware of her plan then, I recognize it now, having raised a child.
As these sweet memories swirl in my head, I wonder: Was life as simple for my parents?
the station wagon. Mom added ice cubes to colored metal cups. I wiped my forehead with my sweaty arm as I pleaded for cream soda. A harried sigh escaped her lips as she brushed the hair off my face and handed me a cup.
I stood in front of the candy display pinching my bottom lip together with my thumb and forefinger, hmm, Butterfinger and a Cherry Mash. My excitement was palpable as I made my Outside, selection.Daddy
The speakers dangled from the front windows, which had been rolled down halfway to accommodate them. The fragrance of fresh buttered popcorn oozed through the windows on a current of warm evening air along with the sounds of other moviegoers. The speakers emitted the crackly, scratchy sound that accompanied music that signaled the beginning of the cartoons.
loaded the goodies in our old station wagon with extra care because the oxidized paint rubbed off on all who brushed up against it.
Today, as I reminisce about childhood delights – savoring the experiences – I pause, contemplating the contrast between then and now. My family shaped me. I wish every child could experience what I had. I wish for them love, innocence, and a sense of safety. I wish for them a wholesome place to learn lessons about empathy, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. I wish for them a sense of family and belonging. And I wish for them experiences like the simple magic of Dollar Night.
the sky darkened, and the voices of my brothers reverberated across the playground as they hollered “Joyce, come on!” I told my new friends goodbye and trudged back to
Eventually,process.
After watching Mr. Magoo and Yogi the Bear, my eyelids sagged, my breathing became slow and rhythmic, and as the first strains of music for the movie blasted, I slumped in the front seat between my parents. Gently, Daddy scooped me up and placed me on a pallet in the back, beside my sleeping brothers.
“Dollar Night Movie Magic,” written by Joyce Hanewinkel, won second place in the 2022 Writers’ Symposium writing contest sponsored by LIFE’s Senior Centers and the Oklahoma Arts Council.
The merry-go-round turned sluggishly. I charged toward it, quickly getting into sync with its rotation, and grabbed one of the bars. Hanging on for all I was worth, my legs pumped, driving it faster. Amid shrieks of laughter from other panting, red-faced children, I launched myself onto the platform. A blur of cars and scenery spun around me in a kaleidoscope of colors, stimulating my senses until the platform slowed. Amidst giggles and pandemonium, I and my cohorts jumped down and repeated the
I held Daddy’s hand as I skipped into the Safeway grocery store feeling like a princess – having his undivided attention. Mom waited in the car with the boys. A frugal man, with a stay-athome wife and three children, Dad had explained to us that it was more economical – okay, cheaper – to buy snacks from Safeway than to purchase them from the concession stand. We were not concerned in the least about that because he bought large bottles of Cragmont pop, and we got our choice of, not one, but two candy bars.
Dollar Night at the Cinema 66 DriveIn movie theater in Oklahoma City in the summer of 1962 was a thrilling event for my family. I was six, and my brothers, Andy and Scotty, were a few years older. The temperature was near 90 degrees. The air lay hot and sticky on my skin. Perspiration beaded on my upper lip and around my temples where the fine hairs curled and frizzed. I gleefully climbed into the car for a trip to the grocery store for snacks.
The excitement reached critical mass as we drove through the gates. The rows of bermed parking spaces, with speakers perched precariously on poles – and more importantly the playground – came into view. I was hyped up on a sugar buzz. Swings, a slide, and a merry-go-round beckoned. My brothers and I peered eagerly out the windows as Dad parked. Not waiting for Daddy to open the tailgate, I scrambled over the backseat, beating my brothers out the passenger door. Several other children were down front already – new friendship prospects. Carefree and giddy, I felt safe knowing my protective brothers kept watch.
