Spectacular by Nature ™

Five reasons Vancouver is the place to be WE’RE WEST COAST Vancouver may be a sophisticated, metropolitan area, but the locals are friendly and laid-back, and love the beaches and mountains as much as the city scene – and visitors get the best of both worlds. WE’RE THE WORLD’S CITY Walking down the street, you’ll hear a dozen different languages and a multitude of accents. You can also indulge in just about any type of ethnic food you desire – Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Greek, Indian, you name it! The same can be said for our worldwide offerings of dance, theatre and the arts. WE’RE IN THE PERFECT SPOT At the foot of the dazzling Coast Mountains and surrounded by glimmering waterways, Vancouver is one of the world’s most fortunately situated cities. You’ll be struck by the natural beauty visible even from the downtown core. WE’RE GREAT IN THE KITCHEN The fish is fresh, the inspiration is international and the style is West Coast. In 2014, Condé Nast Traveler’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards ranked Vancouver one of the world’s best food cities. Even the bartenders in town use fresh, local ingredients to make the most inventive cocktails around. WE’RE ADVENTUROUS Whether taking floatplanes deep into the wilderness, hiking the nearby mountains, skiing, kayaking or fly-fishing, Vancouverites make the most of the spectacular natural beauty here – and you’ll be just as enamoured with the endless outdoor opportunities that surround Vancouver.

Granville Island

Granville Island is a must for culinary adventurers keen to sample the city’s artisan products and multicultural influences. The Island’s flagship is the bustling Granville Island Public Market – where exotic produce and gourmet ingredients are sold alongside global dishes and local specialties. Take a guided tasting tour of the market’s labyrinth of shops and stands with Vancouver Foodie Tours’ Granville Island Market Tour, or wander the massive space on your own and pick up fixings for an al fresco picnic – the docks are always lively with visitors enjoying delicious food while buskers lend a festive feel. Outside the market, you can drop in for a tasting of local brews at Dockside Restaurant, catch a show starring the Vancouver TheatreSports League or browse shop-packed Railspur Alley. Then take the scenic route to your next destination – Aquabus and False Creek Ferries water taxis provide transport across False Creek to and from Granville Island.

Located in the downtown Harbour Centre, the Vancouver Lookout, at a height of 130 metres (430 feet), is the perfect place to survey the city. Or, take a virtual aerial tour: Vancouver’s newest big attraction, FlyOver Canada, will have you soaring from coast to coast in an immersive experience for all five senses!

Hit the slopes You’ll find plenty of runs for a variety of skiing abilities and riding at Cypress and Grouse mountains, both less than half an hour’s drive from the city centre. You can also strap on some snowshoes for a wintry hike, or treat the kids to an afternoon of snow tubing. Whatever activity you choose, you can play all day amid gorgeous alpine terrain, then be back in the city in time for a late-afternoon or early-evening cocktail. Or, venture farther afield to Whistler Blackcomb, host mountain resort of the 2010 Olympic Games, just two hours away on the scenic Sea-to-Sky Highway.

SEAWALL CIRCUIT

Make your way across the swaying Capilano Suspension Bridge that stretches 137 metres (450 feet) across the canyon and the Capilano River 70 metres (230 feet) below. Explore the Cliffwalk, a series of suspended walkways jutting out from the granite cliff face above Capilano River.

ON TWO WHEELS

Urban paths and forest trails have been drawing cycling enthusiasts to Vancouver for years. Options include pedalling leisurely through Stanley Park or the University of British Columbia campus, or navigating rugged trails on the North Shore. Rent a bike to go on your own or sign up for a guided adventure with companies such as Cycle City Tours, Bayshore Bicycles & Rollerblade Rentals, English Bay Bike Rentals, Spokes Bicycle Rentals, Ezee Riders or Cycle BC Rentals and Tours.

COFFEE CULTURE Vancouverites love a good cuppa joe! Savour a mug of your favourite brew at one of the hundreds of coffee shops sprinkled throughout the city – local hotspots like Caffè Artigiano and Milano Coffee are great places for another Vancouver pastime: people watching.

Other memorable Vancouver gardens include VanDusen Botanical Garden, the sunken gardens at Queen Elizabeth Park, the UBC Botanical Garden & Greenheart Canopy Walkway and the Nitobe Memorial Garden, a traditional Japanese tea and stroll garden.

Birds of a feather

Both the dedicated birdwatcher and amateur naturalist will be amazed by the wide variety of birdlife, wintering shorebirds and waterfowl found within Metro Vancouver and the surrounding area. Lost Lagoon, in Stanley Park, is a conveniently located place for birdwatching. Several adventure companies offer guided birdwatching experiences, including a bald-eagle-viewing float trip at Brackendale, one of the world’s top spots for viewing these magnificent birds.

GO TEAM GO! Canada’s lasting devotion to all things hockey has supported the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Vancouver Canucks since the ’70s. Vancouverites are fiercely loyal to their home team, which has twice come this close to winning the coveted Stanley Cup. Though it’s always fun to cosy up at a sports bar during hockey season and rub shoulders with diehard fans, nothing beats the excitement of watching the game live at Rogers Arena. After experiencing a sea of cheering fans wearing the team colours of white and blue, fist-pumping arena music, and a brand-new

food and beverage program dishing up exotic fare and ice-cold beer, you’ll be the newest fans to join the fold.

Green to the core

VA N CO U V ER E X P ER I EN CE S

Instagrammers take note: Vancouver is internationally lauded for its natural beauty, postcard-worthy mountains and sprawling green space. In fact, the city already ranks among the greenest in the world – the City of Vancouver has pledged that by 2020 Vancouver will be the greenest – and is a front-runner in green building (LEED), planning and technology. Bask in the lush surroundings by enjoying a heartpumping run or cycle around the 22-kilometre (13.5-mile) Stanley Park seawall, relaxing on one of the many stretches of sand, park-hopping (the city has more than 200) or taking to the water for an invigorating bout of kayaking.

Namaste!

Vancouver is a haven for yogis with more than 40 yoga studios scattered across the city and tranquil pockets of outdoor space perfect for downward dogging. Health and wellness are integral to the city’s chilled-out vibe, and you can join in as locals find their Zen – whether it be taking a yoga or Pilates class,

Hollywood North You’ll undoubtedly recognize Vancouver’s cityscape from blockbuster productions like Fifty Shades of Grey and the Twilight series as well as small-screen hits like Once Upon a Time. Chalk it up to our versatility or a climate conducive to year-round filming – either way, Vancouver is a hit with producers and movie stars, many of whom are frequently

sighted cycling, dining and hanging out undisturbed in true West Coast style. Or try your hand at one of the world’s fastestgrowing sports: standup paddleboarding. Paddle your way around the city on a guided tour of Vancouver’s skyline or enjoy a pastel sunset from your watery viewpoint with Ecomarine Paddlesport Centres.

Sand, surf and sun Did you know that Vancouver’s sandy beaches, dotting the edge of Burrard Inlet, earned the city a spot among National Geographic magazine’s “Top 10 Beach Cities”? On the downtown peninsula, English Bay is the most popular spot, offering the perfect vantage point to catch a Vancouver sunset. Second Beach, along the edge of Stanley Park, is a

Flightseeing Take in coastal Vancouver’s most breathtaking sights on a scenic flightseeing adventure by floatplane with Harbour Air, Whistler Air or Westcoast Air – British Columbia boasts the largest floatplane network in the world. For many, the thrill of a floatplane ride is a novelty in itself as they experience their first watery takeoff and landing. Another option is to hop on a helicopter with Helijet or SKY Helicopters for a private, airborne tour of the surrounding mountains, the scenic coastline and downtown Vancouver.

Hike to new heights

Lush rainforests, sparkling waterways and dramatic mountain ranges are the calling card of Vancouver’s natural splendour – all ripe for exploring on foot and just minutes from downtown. For a real workout, try the Grouse Grind, a 2.9-kilometre (1.8-mile) trail straight up to the top of Grouse Mountain – make it to the top for some serious bragging rights. Adventures on the water

VA N CO U V ER E X P ER I EN CE S

For the best views of Vancouver, head out on the water. Sightseeing by boat aboard a Harbour Cruises or Prince of Whales Sea Vancouver tour is a delightful way to experience the city – by day or night. But if you’re more interested in natural sights than manmade ones, consider a thrilling and scenic eco-tour Sea Safari with Sewell’s Marina to spot harbour seals, eagles and

other marine wildlife. You can even get up close and personal at the favourite playgrounds of local sealife on a dive or snorkelling trip with Sea Dragon Dive Charters. Or, for more of a cultural experience by boat, join Takaya Tours, hosted by guides from the Coast Salish Nation, as they sing traditional songs, share legends and point out ancient village sites.

FIRST NATIONS CULTURE Vancouver offers ample opportunity to experience the unique cultures of Canada’s First Nations. Traditional performances and carving can be seen daily at Capilano

Vancouver is world-famous for having some of the most diverse and authentic culinary choices in Canada. Whether you have a hankering for spicy Cajun jambalaya, crispy Greek calamari or comforting Vietnamese pho, you can satisfy your hunger here. Japanese food is ubiquitous, from hole-in-the-wall sushi joints to upscale Japanese barbecues. And with one of the largest Chinatown districts in North America, it’s no wonder that dim sum is another staple of Vancouver dining. Vancouver’s location also puts it in prime position to reap the fruits of the sea, and you haven’t truly sampled West Coast cuisine until you’ve treated your taste buds to mussels, oysters, cedar-plank salmon, Dungeness crab or any other West Coast specialty.

LOCAL INGREDIENTS Locally grown ingredients take centre stage in Vancouver restaurants, and rightfully so – from sun-kissed summer fruits to winter harvest root vegetables, the fertile fields around Vancouver provide sumptuously delicious produce. Canadians are already known for their love of beer, but Vancouverites are developing a reputation for their cultivated taste in craft brews, too. More than 50 local brewers are creating upwards of 200 beer varieties, from crowdpleasing pale ales to smoked-malt porters for those with a more adventurous palate. And by making small batches using local ingredients – from barley and yeast to raspberries, cherries and even honey – Vancouver microbreweries are offering up unique brews at their absolute freshest. Prefer grapes to hops? The city’s budding wine scene also offers plenty of sampleworthy vintages.

THE CITY BY FOOT Take a peek into Vancouver’s storied – and sometimes scandalous – history on a walking tour of downtown, starting from the Visitor Centre

1

26

With its five tall sails and bowsprit jutting out into Burrard Inlet, Canada Place – a convention centre and cruise ship terminal – resembles a massive sailing ship. Take a tour of Canada by foot (along the Canadian Trail illustrated promenade) or by air (with a ride on flight simulator FlyOver Canada). Then follow the promenade north toward the iconic cauldron that was lit for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and the Vancouver Convention Centre West, with its impressive six-acre “living roof.”

2

WATERFRONT STATION This Beaux Arts edifice was originally built to accommodate passengers travelling the Canadian Pacific Railway; look high up on the walls to see oil paintings depicting scenes you might encounter on a trans-Canada trip by rail. Leaving the front doors,

Jack Poole Plaza

turn left down cobblestoned Water Street, Gastown’s main thoroughfare. Most of this neighbourhood’s original construction was fuelled by Klondike gold in the boom years between the Great Fire of 1886 and the First World War.

3

STEAM CLOCK A quirky urban timepiece and iconic Vancouver photo-op, the steam clock at the corner of Water and Cambie streets gives a steamy rendition of the Westminster Chimes every 15 minutes, drawing its power from the city’s underground steam-heat system.

CHINESE CULTURAL CENTRE/ DR. SUN YAT-SEN PARK & CHINESE CLASSICAL GARDEN Head south on Carrall Street to reach the Chinese Cultural Centre. A modern building with an impressive traditional gate, the centre serves the neighbourhood’s thousands of Chinese-speaking residents. Next door is the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, which was modelled after a Ming period (1368– 1644) scholar’s retreat in the Chinese city of Suzhou. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen (1866–1925) is known as the father of modern China.

6

SAM KEE BUILDING

28

On Pender Street, just half a block east of Carrall Street, you’ll find the world’s thinnest

Sam Kee Building

office building – just shy of 1.5 metres deep (not quite five feet). In 1912, the city expropriated most of Kee’s land in order to widen Pender Street, but refused to compensate him for the tiny leftover strip. Kee’s neighbour, meanwhile, hoped to pick up the leftover sliver dirt cheap. The building was Kee’s response.

7

CATHEDRAL PLACE AND THE BILL REID GALLERY Continue northwest on Pender Street, then hang a left on Hornby Street – just past Dunsmuir Street is a veritable study in postmodernism. This

courtyard, with the formality and calm of a French garden, is tucked away behind 639 Hornby Street, a Gothic edifice with small Art Deco parts melded onto it. Inside, you’ll find the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, showcasing the work of B.C.’s most acclaimed Haida artist, Bill Reid (1920–1998), and other contemporary aboriginal artists.

was completed in 1895. It was nearly demolished in the 1930s, however, when developers offered the church big money for the land. Public outcry over the plot marked the first shift in local sentiment toward the preservation of heritage sites.

ROBSON STREET Nicknamed “Robsonstrasse” in the 1950s for the wealth of German delis and restaurants that populated it, today this stretch of sidewalk has an international, cosmopolitan feel and is better known for chic shops, high-end fashion and excellent peoplewatching. End your tour with a shopping spree or a cup of joe at one of the many local coffee shops.

ROBSON SQUARE A public plaza and landmark civic centre, Robson Square was the work of modernist architect Arthur Erickson. With the Vancouver Law Courts on one side and the Vancouver Art Gallery on the other, the square is anchored by the foundations of society – the law and the arts – while underneath the square are government offices, supporting the people.
