JUST A THOUGHT...

Spring. The season of new beginnings and—of course—weddings! This issue is a nod to both, and, I’m thrilled to say, my first issue as Editor-at-Large for VIP Alexandria Magazine.

New beginnings.

I’m proud to have the torch passed on to me from our illustrious leader, Kellie, who is embarking on her own new beginning. It’s an exciting time for both of us—and one we walk into with respect for where we have come from and expectation for the places we will go from here. I’m eager to take all of you on this journey with me and my VIP family.

The pages of this issue are a collection of love stories—old love, new love. Even lost love. We’re featuring the breathtaking weddings of beautiful couples whose stories are still being written…These are just their beginning chapters. Sometimes life has a funny way of bringing people back together. That certainly holds true for Nadia Baksh and Ryan Steele. After meeting in undergrad at the University of Virginia in 2003, the two dated long distance post-graduation and briefly lived together in NYC. “We parted ways to pursue professional degrees and then COVID brought us back together,” says Nadia. “This time around, we just knew—and we were excited about a future together.”

After a year of dating, their future became even clearer—with a look back at their past. “Ryan planned a romantic Valentine's weekend in Charlottesville, VA,” Nadia recalls. “Charlottesville is very special to us, as that is where we met and had our first dance, as well as our first kiss. On February 13th, I was standing by the window of the condo we’d rented and it began to snow. Then I turned around to find Ryan on one knee.”

After making plans for a big, traditional wedding that seemed incomplete after the sudden passing of Ryan’s mother and Nadia’s father, the couple decided on an elopement at Nadia’s favorite

building in Washington, DC. With Ryan’s father officiating and their photographer, Katelyn Byng, serving as both witness and photographer, Ryan and Nadia met for a private ceremony at the Kennedy Center on September 25, 2022.

“We had some very memorable moments that day,” says Nadia, who wore a beautiful gown with a lace overlay and plunging V-neck. “Our first look was planned at the Capitol building, but right [at] the meet-up time, dark clouds rolled in. Fortunately, Katelyn was able to quickly pivot and moved it to Union Station. Not only did we get beautiful photos from this location, but later the clouds parted, and the sunlight was perfect for our ceremony. It was the type of sun you can only get after a storm and it's become an allegory for our love story.”

The newly-married Steeles honeymooned for a week in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, at the all-inclusive Excellence El Carmen resort.

The number three has a significance to Jaimie Metellus and Yves Lebrun, who met each other at a concert given by Haiti's former president on September 10, 2017. “Yves saw me inside and stopped me three times to tell me how beautiful I looked that night,” says Jaimie, who, like Yves, is Haitian-American. “I was with a group of friends/cousins, who he said looked like my bodyguards. He waited until we were leaving, when they all went to get the car, to ask for my number. He called me that same night and we went out three days later.”

That three days turned into a year and a half of dating. Then, Yves took things to the next level. “We went to Honduras for vacation and he found a beautiful restaurant overlooking the water and we were the only people there,” Jaimie says. “He asked the waiter to put the ring in my dessert—and I almost ate it!”

The next ring Jamie received was on September 13, 2020, as she stood with Yves in the Bellevue Conference and Event Center wearing a floral-inspired elegant off-the-shoulder lace dress with

an A-line silhouette and sheer, structured bodice featuring a slight plunge and floral booms. Surrounded by 250 guests, the couple exchanged rings and vows and were pronounced married before joining everyone for an on-site reception.

“Our wedding was literally a celebration from start until finish— an absolute party,” says Jamie. “Before the reception even started, people were on the dance floor. We had a party conga line and the servers, bartenders, vendors and all the guests danced throughout the entire venue. Our day was filled with so much joy and happiness. We were supposed to finish the wedding before midnight, but we were having such a good time that the venue let us finish at almost 2:00 AM. I don't think I ever had such a fun time at any wedding until this day!”

The newly married Lebruns honeymooned for three weeks in Turkey, visiting Istanbul, Cappadocia, Bodrum and Pamukkale, once again demonstrating the power of "three."

Landing in the “friend zone” can often mean being in a place of no return, but when Mark Englert and Hannah Molloy met in college, it took friendship to light the spark of love. “He walked me home from a sorority event one night and later asked me out, but I turned him down,” says Hannah. “We became ‘just friends.’ Then, one night the next semester, he walked me home again. When he left me at my dorm, I suddenly had this overwhelming need to run after him—and I had no idea why. When I reached him, he just smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you came.’ We kissed that night.”

Four years later, they were still growing strong. And then one day, what Hannah thought was an ordinary fishing trip on the Potomac became anything but. Mark took her to a willow tree on the Potomac with a view of the monuments, and then it happened... “I went to set my purse on a rock and he would not let go of my

hand,” Hannah recalls. “I looked back, and he was getting down on one knee.”

On May 20, 2022, the couple again had a special moment when they stood together at Rose Hill Manor for an outdoor ceremony with 130 of their friends and family. Wearing a simple A-line gown with bishop sleeves, Hannah exchanged vows with Mark and became Mrs. Englert. After being pronounced married, they joined their guests for a reception in the ballroom at Rose Hill Manor. After dining, dancing and Mark’s surprise of “being iced” during the garter toss, as well as a few special moments captured by Andrea Cable Photography, the couple was sent off to start their honeymoon at the all-inclusive Excellence Resort in Oyster Bay, Jamaica. Now back at home, they look forward to a future together filled with friendship and love.

Despite seven years of their mothers’ best efforts to fix them up, Kelly Donovan and Kyle Gutowski never actually met until chance threw them together in 2018 in Marrakesh. Sort of. “The first time we met was at a fundraiser called ‘Mystery in Marrakesh,’ where we nearly ran into each other while setting up!” Kelly explains. “Soon after, we went out on a first date, then a second ‘first date’ four months later when I moved back from Australia.”

After moving in together and adopting their dog Brizzy, the next step of their relationship came on a trip to the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina. “It’s one of my favorite places to visit,” says Kelly, whose family lives in the area. “We arrived for a tour and Kyle convinced me to take a picture together overlooking the estate and then got down on one knee and proposed. We had a tour of the Biltmore house booked for that morning, so quickly after Kyle proposed, we had to run to the house and start an audio tour for the

next hour and a half where we couldn’t speak to each other!”

Speaking some very important words on October 1, 2022, Kyle and Kelly stood before 180 of their friends and family in the ballroom at Airlie in Warrenton, VA, as they took their vows. Wearing a one-of-a-kind Ava Lauren champagne-colored A-line fitted gown embellished with beaded leaves and buttons running down the nude mesh back to the train, Kelly became Mrs. Gutowski. The newlyweds later joined their guests for a reception in the pavilion at Airlie. “It’s such an amazing space!” Kelly notes.

After playing bartender and dancing through an arch of hands, Kelly and one of her bridesmaids took over the dancefloor to perform a dance to “Mambo No. 5.” They also had a funny photo session with Kelly’s grandparents. Finally, the couple were sent off to a minimoon at the Iris Inn in the Shenandoah before going on a much longer trip to France.

Florida boy Ryan Orr may have been on vacation in DC when he swiped right and met Valerie Otto on Tinder in the summer of 2016, but theirs proved to be more than just a holiday romance. “We instantly connected and from there, our relationship grew,” says Valerie.

The two eventually moved to Texas, where Ryan took things to the next level. “He proposed under the suspension bridge next to the Brazos River in Waco,” Valerie recalls of the memorable day in 2021. “My mom and aunt and his mom were in town that weekend and having them there made it that much more special. We had people cheering from the bridge as he proposed and his mom filmed the whole thing. We both cried like babies!”

Tears abounded once again on April 30, 2022, when Valerie dressed in a light blush and cream-colored ballgown adorned with beaded floral lace appliques with golden embroidered branches in the faintest shade of pink and a lace-up corset back to walk down the aisle at Gunston Hall. “The ceremony took place in the newly-renovated garden of the mansion and we were the first couple to get married there that spring,” Valerie says. “It was beyond perfect!”

After being pronounced married, the newlyweds joined their 52 guests for an intimate, outdoor reception in the courtyard at Gunston Hall, gathering under the romantic ambiance of twinkle lights, candles and stars. “Of course, our friends incorporated ‘It was love at first swipe…’ into their speeches,” Valerie notes, going on to describe some other memorable points of the day. “Ryan’s best man quoted ’90s wrestling during his best man speech that had everyone laughing and confused, Ryan and I did our signature handshake upon entering the reception, my bridesmaid lost her shoe coming down the aisle and we both were so over being [the] center of attention that we avoided the cake cutting portion of our reception!”

The couple honeymooned on a seven-day Norwegian Cruise to Mexico, Belize and Honduras.

Look up from the cellphone in your hand and you’ll find that everyone else is taking selfies or photos of what they’re doing, who they’re with, what they’re eating or what they're drinking. In restaurants and bars, in gyms, in parks, anywhere that people are, so are the high-res pics. The advent of the camera function—not to mention subsequently improved filters and capabilities—makes even the most ordinary person a “photographer.” But once upon a time, photos were not so common—nor was photography itself so accessible.

As it was introduced to the world, photography was time-consuming and expensive, so much so that it wasn’t something anyone could do whenever the mood struck. Consequently, it was generally reserved for special occasions, and usually only for the wealthy. Many people never even had their photo taken other than one occasion: their wedding.

But even that took time to catch on. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had their photograph taken when they married in the early 1800s. It is believed that this was,

At the time, photography was a new practice and a novel one, at that. Unlike what we now know photographs to be, photos then were printed on small metal sheets called daguerreotype that required heavy cameras and dangerous chemicals to produce. As inventions improved the process, the fact remained that it was still tedious and prohibitively expensive. And so, wedding photos became an important way to mark an important event.

As it changed over the years, wedding photography became an entity unto itself, ever-changing to

adjust to trends as well as new technology. It has come far from the first days of staid posing and stiff, often unsmiling expressions camera. Unlike modern times, early wedding photography wasn’t an in-the-moment, asit’s-happening type of thing. It was neither candid nor intimate. Instead, it happened in a studio. Couples wore their best clothes and went in either before or after their wedding to have photos taken formally. It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that brides and grooms began wearing their wedding attire for their picture, sometimes taking an additional photo with their wedding party. Because of the technical limitations of the cameras, backgrounds were often painted in by hand

with a brush. Then, as camera technology became more portable and easier to handle, photographers finally began to capture weddings on-site.

The arrival of colorized photos did not happen until the mid-1900s, developed. Prior to this, pictures were taken in black and white, as color photography had the tendency to fade and shift, so picture quality was compromised. When the German company Agfa developed a new type of color film in 1936, other companies used this technology in their films. It grew from there.

As the world plunged into WWII, the use of portable camera development—both on the battlefront and the homefront. Cameras now came complete with film and a flash, making it far simpler to take pictures outside the studio. When the war ended and soldiers came home, their return brought about an exponential rise in weddings, essentially kickstarting the wedding photography industry. Interestingly, it was largely due to the ex-military photographers who saw wedding photography as a lucrative job opportunity that wedding photography experienced such a drastic shift. As the industry grew, smaller, portable cameras made it possible to take numerous pictures instead of just one and capture greater detail.

PHOTOS CONNECT PEOPLE THROUGH TIME IN WAYS NOTHING ELSE CAN.

During the mid-century, wedding photography became more accessible to the general public rather than being limited to those with means, but it still remained somewhat limited due to the high cost of film. As a result, despite the fact that wedding photography had moved from formal studio portraits to on-site photography, “casual” and “candid” photos were still staged. All of that changed, however, when film became less expensive in the 1970s. Unleashed by the lowered cost of their craft, photographers became more skilled at experimenting and developing a personal style of photography.

As photography progressed, so did the styles and techniques used. Eventually, various styles also became introduced to wedding photography, giving couples almost limitless ways in capturing their weddings forever.

Traditional. Think Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. These are posed shots. The traditional approach focuses solely on the creation of the perfect, posed moment. Photographers take extra time to capture specific moments in just the right way. To do this, they must also play a more prominent role throughout the course of the day. As they work, the photographer directs the couple on what to do and where to do it to achieve certain shots. The traditional style is best suited to couples who have a clear-cut list of specific shots in mind, such as the wedding ceremony, the ring exchange, the cake cutting and any other special moments they wish to preserve as a memory.

Much like the name implies, this style more documentary-style approach to capture the details of the wedding as well as candid shots—thus achieving a full accounting of the day. Unlike in traditional photography, the photographer becomes basically invisible while taking pictures of the ceremony and reception. Professional photographers are naturally observant and curious, making them notice many of the small details people often miss as well as the little moments that come to be so important. Couples who want to forget about the photographer’s presence appreciate the photojournalism method.

This approach combines various aspects of traditional and photojournalism photography to both allow for creativity and ensure that none of the classic, iconic shots of the wedding are missed. The photographer takes many of the typical posed shots, yet makes the details a priority as well. Digital photography and editing software also allow the wedding

In the same way an artist paints, fine art wedding photography focuses greatly on creativity as well as the photographer's use of lighting and composition. Each photo is captured with the intent of creating a piece of artwork from it, either for the wedding album or for a large-scale photo print to be used as wall art in the home. The photographer uses various shooting and post-production retouching methods to achieve artistic and impressive, frameable photos.

Think about all the high gloss fashion magazines you’ve ever thumbed through. There’s something striking about the methods used to achieve that shot which grabs your attention on the page. A bit avant garde, fashion photography is more of a niche genre for weddings, as it is quite technical and requires a photographer who has a background or training in fashion photography. This style of photography is based on the techniques used in editorial photographs and advertisements in high-end bridal magazines, which have started to see use in real weddings. Wedding albums with this type of photography naturally have an editorial feel.

DARK AND MOODY. While it may sound like something that would be dichotomous to the happy occasion of a wedding, the dark, moody look has become popular in modern wedding photography. The look and feel of the photos evoke senses of romance and intimacy, much in the way a dimly-lit room seems more intimate. This style is particularly suited to engagement shoots too. Unlike most outdoor photo sessions, those who prefer this style of photography find ideal use in storm clouds and overcast skies. These shots are usually photographed with natural light as the sun sets to create a backdrop of deep, dark shadows.

On Saturday, March 4, over 350 supporters of the American Heart Association joined the 2023 Heart of Greater Washington Chair, Vishal Tulsian of SAIC for the Heart Ball. Hosted at the Salamander Washington DC, guests bid, dined and dance in honor of their connection to the mission of the American Heart Association as a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. The Heart Ball is the culmination of the year-round campaign, which this year will raise $1M to advance mission-critical work to save and improve lives.

“The Heart Ball is a celebration of the year-long Heart of Greater Washington campaign led by Vishal Tulsian and SAIC,” said American Heart Association, Greater Washington Region Executive Director, Soula Antoniou. “We’re so thankful for the tireless dedication of our volunteer leaders, like Vishal, and all of our sponsors and guests who drive our mission forward for a world where all people can, not only, survive but thrive!”

Each year, VIP Alexandria Magazine selects 12 local men to be featured in the annual ‘Gentlemen’s Issue’ as Alexandria’s Most Interesting Men of the Year.

Nominations are accepted and honorees are selected by a committee that consists of past Most Interesting Men and Most Inspiring Women honorees.

When Karen Blanchard was born, she came into the life of a military brat—the constant moves, the unique places, the understanding of the military machine. The daughter of an Army intelligence officer, Karen spent her childhood traveling the world. She was educated in French overseas schools for most of her life: first in Cambodia during the height of the Vietnam War and later in Lebanon during its pre-civil war' golden age.' Her travels around the world continued after marrying an Army intelligence officer, Bill Waddell, whom she accompanied on various overseas assignments. Karen eventually pursued her own path in public service as a diplomat in the US Foreign Service—a bold and brave decision in an era when women, especially military spouses, were expected to remain housewives and play hostess at home.

In her own assignments to embassies around the world, Karen made a name for herself as the embodiment of the classic traditions of the Foreign Service, venturing beyond embassy gates to immerse herself in the local culture. In each of her postings, she leveraged her genteel charm and cultural fluency to represent the best of America. Karen and Bill were later posted in China in the 1990s during a time of rapid cultural, political, and economic changes. Bill's tragic and sudden death in 1999 while in China left Karen shattered and nearly interrupted her career as a diplomat. But it was at her next assignment in South Korea that she would meet someone who became her

next partner in the grand adventure of her life—and a companion in love.

Robert "Bob" Blanchard, once an aspiring academic, had a career in the defense industry that saw him traveling the world for far-flung business projects, including considerable time living in Italy, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. Serendipitously, Bob and Karen would meet in South Korea through a mutual friend, which led to a few casual dates and occasional run-ins at embassy receptions in Seoul. When Bob began to encounter challenges in getting to his office from his apartment because of the new security procedures that were suddenly put into place after the events of 9/11, Karen offered him a guest bedroom in her home within the embassy compound—an offer which led to the deepening of their friendship and a shift in the nature of their relationship.

"And the rest, as they say, is history," Bob says with a wry smile.

Three months later, right before a romantic candlelit dinner for two in front of the fireplace, Bob suddenly went down on one knee and presented her with a ring. "I wanted to do the whole romantic thing."

Happily, Karen said yes.

The couple married before moving to Chicago for a few years, where Karen worked in a passport office while Bob engaged in his own business ventures. The couple later traveled to the Middle East when Karen accepted postings at embassies in Tunisia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Syria. Karen distinguished herself once again, and she was asked to accept special and sensitive assignments in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan at the height of the War on the Terror.

She was later asked to accept a temporary assignment in Saudi Arabia, where the State Department was struggling the staff the embassy. After having worked there in the 1990s as a defense contractor during the Gulf War and experiencing how strictly fasting was enforced during Ramadan, Bob was understandably reluctant to move back to Saudi Arabia. Hoping to entice Bob to the move, Karen suggested they summer in the south of France at a friend's house. As someone familiar with the slow process of government paperwork, Bob figured that by the time their posting to Saudi Arabia had cleared in Washington, they would already be well on their way to France.

Uncharacteristically expedient, the State Department sent Bob and Karen on their way in a week. What was meant to be a temporary assignment stretched into a two-year tour, during which time Karen became the first American woman in Saudi Arabia to obtain a driver's license. The couple would play a central role in managing the delicate and sensitive issues during a time when policy shifts and political controversies in Washington were challenging the US-Saudi alliance, making their work all the more crucial. Bob and Karen were as dynamic a duo in their careers as they were in their lives.

After proudly retiring from public service in 2018, they made a home together in Old Town Alexandria, where the couple's charming personalities and unique stories earned them a much-loved place as social pillars of the local community. Their lively and leisurely long dinner parties became the stuff of legends, while their loyal patronage at the best haunts of Old Town made them beloved fixtures at Fontaine Bistro and Brut Wine Bar. They were active members of the D.C. chapter of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, an invite-only international wine and food society based in Paris, where they played an outsized role in bringing in new members. They were also known as mentors to the many young and intellectually curious people they came across—all of whom benefitted from their wealth of knowledge and their many cosmopolitan experiences.

Saldy, Bob and Karen’s adventures came to an end on February 23, 2023, when Karen lost her battle with cancer.

That loss was felt throughout Old Town as well as across the world— but most especially by her children, grandchildren...

...and the husband who embarked on so many journeys with her and loved her so deeply.

Life is but a stopping place. A pause in what’s to be. A resting place along the road, to sweet Eternity.

PROGRAMS THAT EMPOWER, STRENGTHEN AND CONNECT

Being the child of a member of the military isn’t easy when you consider frequent moves, making new friends and having at least one parent gone on deployments for months at a time.

April is the month of the military child, a time to recognize the unique circumstances of children whose parent(s) serve in the US armed forces. Blue Star Families (BSF), a 501(c)-3 non-profit organization, works to empower families to thrive as the parents serve. The group is committed to strengthening military families by connecting them with neighbors to create vibrant communities of mutual support.

“Blue Star Families is a huge advocate for children in helping them adapt to hard situations and build resiliency,” says Heather Walrath, a military spouse whose family has participated in numerous BSF events. “They offer many programs that are sponsored by local businesses that do two things: provide resources for the kids, but also help the community understand and support the challenges of military families.”

Walrath touted uplifting BSF events like book giveaways, stress management sessions for kids, story times, outdoor adventures and tours. “All of these activities help connect military families to each other and their communities."

Other members agree that BSF fortifies military families. One way to do this is through hosting events during Blue Star Welcome Week. This week-long period, during which time military children transition to their new homes, is a pivotal time for community engagement. BSF also hosts Blue Star Summers to support military children by providing activities during the summer school break.

“One of my favorite benefits they provide for military children is Blue Star Museums, where they collaborate with other organizations to provide free admission for military families to museums across the country,” says BSF member, Lesley Rose.

BSF was founded by military spouses in 2009 to empower families to thrive as they serve. The organization is committed to strengthening military families by connecting them with their neighbors – individuals and organizations – to create vibrant communities of mutual support. The founders believed we're all stronger when we take care of one another.

“We like to do things that help people make military life enjoyable and so they enjoy the areas where they are stationed and get to know the people they’re being stationed with,” says Julie Riggs, acting executive director for the BSF National Capital Region.

BSF’s groundbreaking research is raising the nation's awareness of the unique challenges of military family life. The organization helps military families overcome isolation and alienation of frequent moves, deployments and reduced support from the government. Their innovative programs are solving specific challenges for military families, including fighting economic insecurity with resources that foster spouse career development, creating family strength with rich family programming and providing critical peer support for caregivers, whose numbers are only increasing.

“Our mission over the next five years, 10 years, is to have a chapter in every state and that way, we can have a presence — boots on the ground — in communities serving our military families,” says Riggs.

With more than 230,000 members in the BSF network in chapters and communities globally, the group touches more than 1.5 million military families each year. Connecting military families is one of their specialties. In the National Capital Region chapter, there are more than 15,000 members.

“When we moved to DC, it was a very different community than we had experienced in our 20 years with the military,” Walrath says. “In the National Capital Region, people are very spread out with regards to where they live and don’t have the close-knit military community that you have when you live on an installation or when you are part of a squadron. BSF provides that link to unite military families and to provide support for situations that are unique to the military lifestyle and a way for local communities to connect with military communities. Without BSF, I don’t think we would have felt as connected to others in the National Capital [Region] area.”

Through comprehensive research and program partnerships, BSF ensures that wherever American military families go, they can always feel connected, supported and empowered to thrive in every community, across the nation and around the globe.

Frequent moves and deployments make it challenging for military families to set down roots, make friends, find new employment and take care of their families. Blue Star Families helps military families overcome these challenges and thrive in their communities as they serve.

Equity and inclusion are additional priorities of the group. Riggs points out that the organization is working to increase the representation of all military families of all races, ethnicities and identities. “We want to be representing families as they appear in our actual military, which, as you know, is [a] very, very diverse population of people,” Riggs says.

BSF offers programs that enhance family life, help spouses find jobs, provide caregivers with essential peer support and connect families with their civilian neighbors to build strong communities.

“[BSF] connects military families from all branches with each other, but also with the communities in which they serve,” Walrath says. “BSF also conducts lifestyle surveys for families and is a huge

advocate for policy initiatives and legislation that improve the quality of life for military families.”

GET INVOLVED!

Many BSF volunteer opportunities exist. “I am in the process of signing up as a BSF volunteer with the goal of hosting a monthly play date at a park in Northern Virginia so local military-affiliated parents can meet up in order to hopefully make friends and support one another,” says Rose.

BSF offers incredible military family-centered opportunities like White House tours, a Thanksgiving dinner theater, river cleanup events, area tours, outdoor events, virtual classes and webinars. Participants in these activities encourage other military families to expand their community and join.

“Get involved! Many military families limit themselves to resources provided by the installation they are assigned to and don’t look outside their branch,” Walrath says.

By participating in BSF activities, military families can obtain additional resources, broaden their circle of friends and connect in special online communities to meet others who are caregivers, to assist with career-broadening and to volunteer.

EDUCATING, HONORING AND INSPIRING MOMS FOR 90 YEARS

There is nothing as strong and resilient as a mother’s love, so starting an organization to honor moms has "great idea" written all over it. Many can attest to having the Mother of the Year Award, but through the American Mothers, Inc (AMI) organization, you can make it official.

That’s the mission of American Mothers, Inc — to honor moms who make a difference in communities nationwide. The first National Mother of the Year® was named by Sara Delano Roosevelt in 1935. Recognizing an admirable mother provided inspiration to a nation in need of unconditional love, inner strength and courage. American Mothers has honored model mothers from across the country every year since.

“I can name all kinds of reasons why moms are incredible,” says Joyce Stevens, president of AMI, who was named the 2012

Nebraska Mother of the Year®. “Honoring moms is so important.”

The 2014 Montana Mother of the Year® and current 2nd Vice President of AMI, Sabrina Wisher-DeWitt said the organization honors women from many different journeys, but the common denominator is that every one of these women is a mother.

“I have learned, you don't have to have the same blood type to be a child’s mom,” Wisher-DeWitt said. “AMI stands behind our moms and together, we will continue to make a difference. It takes a village, and AMI has that village!"

It’s a built-in support network of women who understand the challenges moms face.

AMI’S BEGINNINGS

The organization’s roots are noble. In 1931, two years before she was First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt announced the formation of a nationwide program for the better observance of Mother’s Day that would help dependent mothers and needy children. Sponsored by J.C. Penney’s Golden Rule Foundation, the Golden Rule Mother’s Day Committee established a fund to promote a “Golden Rule observance of Mother’s Day.” “Of course, the Golden Rule is, do unto others as you would wish them to do unto you,” Stevens says. “Eleanor Roosevelt started it based on that.”

By 1933, committees were formed in almost every state and expressed the group’s philosophy that “the truest tribute that can be paid to [a] mother is to share with others the love that she so generously and often sacrificially lavished upon us.” The funds established were distributed to local hospitals, homes for the aged, orphanages, churches and other welfare agencies to be used where needed most.

By 1935, the American Mothers Committee of the Golden Rule Foundation gathered New York City’s notable citizens at the

Waldorf Astoria, where Sarah Delano Roosevelt, the Committee’s Honorary Chairman, presented the first American Mother of the Year® Award.

Every year since, AMI names an inspirational mother from nominees across the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico for this important honor. The group of extraordinary women, by their very nature, form a family bond.

“It’s an organization that will help you connect with other moms,” Stevens says. “We all have so much to offer each other.”

AMERICAN MOTHERS OPPORTUNITIES

The group holds an annual convention where they honor the Mothers of the Year® state honorees. Moms and their guests network with other moms, hear from dynamic speakers and meet past and present Mothers of the Year®.

In addition, the organization produces a podcast called The American Mothers: Mom to Mom Podcast, which provides a forum for mothers of all ages to engage in conversations on a variety of topics. The weekly, 30-minute programs lift, educate, encourage and support mothers in their various responsibilities as they shape the rising generation.

THE GOLDEN RULE

AMI encourages a more positive and empathetic culture in America by providing charitable and communications support for programs which benefit mothers and children through the Golden Rule Grant.

The Golden Rule Grant provides an avenue where American Mothers can implement its mission and values by supporting other non-profit organizations as they provide services for the common good of mothers and children. Only nonprofit 501(c) (3) organizations involved in projects that provide health and human services and civic and community programs that impact mothers and/or children are considered to receive a Golden Rule Grant. Annually, the current State Mothers of the Year® and the National 5th Grade Essay Contest Winner recommend nonprofit organizations to be considered.

CHANGING THE WORLD THROUGH THE UNITED NATIONS

AMI is a world changer. It’s a non-governmental organization in

consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Currently, members work with the United Nations and the Commission on the Status of Women to raise awareness about issues impacting women and children worldwide. AMI also works closely with other organizations around the globe who share their mission.

American Mothers, Inc.®, Innocents at Risk and Operation Underground Railroad have forged a partnership to educate mothers and the public on ways to identify trafficking and how to take action. Through the Mother’s Eyes on the World initiative, these organizations work together to educate the public on how to identify the key signs of trafficking and protect the children of our communities.

RYAN DEOVLET

Some wines draw you in with their backstory. Others capture you with their sheer deliciousness. Ryan Deovlet’s (say Dev-let) wines are firmly in the second camp. I wasn’t looking for them, but what I found in the glass was so compelling that I simply had to work with them. That’s not to say Ryan doesn’t have a backstory worth telling, because he absolutely does. He has one of the most unique backgrounds in the wine world: a former semi-pro baseball infielder, inspired by growing coffee on Kona Island, set off to work in organic vineyards in Australia as a means to find himself. Fittingly, he took four books with him: On the Road, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Poems of Rumi, and The Prophet. Not your stereotypical jock here. Then, inspired by reading of the travails of Josh Jensen growing Pinot Noir in California, he made his way into working with such wine luminaries as Stephen Dooley, David Ramey and Paul Hobbs. By 2008, he set out on his own after talking Richard Sanford (of Sanford & Benedict Vineyard fame) into selling him enough grapes to make 100 cases of wine. No mean feat.

But, truthfully, it’s Ryan’s absence from the wine in the glass that is so apparent. His light touch as a winemaker yields a wine that transparently speaks of variety and place. Case in point, his 2019 Zotovich Vineyard Pinot Noir ($58). Zotovich Vineyard is located on the north side of the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County, CA, roughly eight miles from the ocean. It sits at approximately

350 feet of elevation. The vineyard is known for being composed primarily of Arnold loamy sand and for being one of the most wind swept in the American Viticultural Area. Wines from this site are distinctly aromatic with an almost salty, saline mineral core. Deovlet’s winemaking techniques, or lack thereof, bring all of this to the fore. He harvests early—this is also one of his first sites

keeps 30% of the grape clusters intact to add structure and spice. His fermentations take place spontaneously and the wine ages for 15 months in oak, only 25% of which is new. His choice of oak is also unique. The barrels are made by illon from oak from forests in the Jura mountains in France. He bottles the wine unfined and unfiltered. Production is miniscule—around 150 cases.

It takes courage to do nothing, to not interfere. Ryan’s courage pays off. The nose bursts with wild berry fruit, licorice, violet, mint and spice and the palate delivers flavors that transcend its medium body, a silky texture and a spicy orange peel inflected finish that lasts.

To pair, I’d suggest taking a page out of Helen Rosner’s book and roast a duck. Her brilliant New Yorker article, When in Doubt, Roast a Duck, makes a convincing and poetic argument that a roast duck is the ultimate dinner party meal. You’ll find the rich meat brings the fruit and spice of the wine to the front, creating the hoisin sauce you didn’t know you needed. The wine’s acidity sweeps away all of that luxurious fat. My only other recommendations are to scatter some small potatoes about as the bird roasts and try not to rush things along, as I did.

Other recommendations: 2021 Sandhi Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir ($44), 2021 Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir ($27).

RECIPE: ROAST DUCK

Serves 2–3

Ingredients:

• 1 large duck, about 6 lbs., at room temperature

• Kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste

• 1 clove garlic, finely grated

• 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard

• 1 tsp. honey

• ¼ cup red-wine vinegar

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 4 cups torn radicchio leaves

• ½ cup roasted hazelnuts

• ½ cup sweet, mild olives, like Castelvetrano

• ¼ cup finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

• Good bread, for serving

Directions

1. Make the duck: heat the oven to 250 degrees. Using a pair of poultry shears or a sharp knife, trim excess skin and fat from the neck and back cavity of the duck. There will probably be a fair amount; trim anything that overhangs (discard the trimmings or reserve them in an airtight container in the freezer to render for duck fat later). Pat the duck dry with paper towels, then generously sprinkle kosher salt inside the cavity. Using the tines of a sharp fork or the point of a sharp paring knife, prick the duck 15-20 times on each side, piercing through the skin and into the fat, but not so far to cut into the muscle beneath.

2. Set the duck, breast-side up, on a rack set inside a roasting pan, then transfer it to the heated oven. After an hour, open the oven, make a few more pricks on the top side of the duck using your fork

or paring knife (the cooking process will have caused some of your original cuts to close), flip the duck breast-side down, then make a few more pricks on the upward face. Continue roasting for another hour, then flip the duck again. Repeat this process, flipping each hour until the bird has cooked for four hours total. Finally, remove the bird from the oven and raise the heat to 350 degrees. While the oven is coming to temperature, carefully remove any fat and juices that have accumulated in the bottom of the roasting pan. Reserve ¼ cup (the remaining fat and juices can be saved for another use). Return the duck to the oven, breast-side up, for an additional 3045 minutes, flipping halfway through. When the skin is crisp and golden, remove the duck from the oven, sprinkle it gently with salt and pepper and let it rest for 15 minutes while composing the salad.

3. Make the salad: in a small jar or bowl, whisk together the grated garlic, mustard, honey, vinegar, olive oil, ¼ cup reserved duck fat (or more olive oil, if not enough duck fat is on hand) and a pinch of salt. Taste the mix, adjusting for salt, if necessary. The dressing should be quite fiery. In a large bowl, toss the radicchio with just enough of the dressing to coat the leaves, then transfer the salad to a serving platter. Using a mortar and pestle or the bottom of a heavy skillet, roughly crush the hazelnuts. Using your hands, tear the olives in half, removing any pits (this makes a nice ragged texture, but chopping them is fine, too). Scatter the nuts and olives across the greens and drizzle on additional dressing.

4. When the duck is rested, have someone else carve it. Arrange the duck pieces atop the dressed salad, pour a few spoonfuls of the reserved drippings over the meat and finish it with a flurry of chopped parsley. Serve with good bread and many napkins.

The birds and bees are buzzing and flowers are blooming. That can only mean one thing: wedding season is upon us! With this auspicious time of year, Alexandrians begin thinking of honeymoons and perhaps even elopements. Read on to learn about on-trend destinations and some pro advice about when to start planning your dream getaway.

Pam Wittmann, owner of Evolution of Travel, explains that recent travel doesn't fit pre-COVID trends. In fact, a growing number of older couples are now going on second honeymoons or making a vacation of renewing their vows. For those under 45, destinations like Italy, the Amalfi Coast in particular, is high on the list. Portugal is also becoming a fan favorite with its dynamic wine scene and not overly-Instagrammed locations.

Directly out of COVID, everyone was itching to travel, but not necessarily to Europe or the Caribbean. Ranches in Wyoming and the Rocky Mountains, specifically Aspen resorts, saw an uptick in tourism. In Mexico, many travelers continue to the sought after town of San Jose del Cabo on the Baja California peninsula, with its sandy beaches and colonial architecture.

Pam advises that any trip outside of North America should be planned at a minimum of 90 days out and ideally, start speaking with her six to nine months in advance to be safe. “[With] less than 90 days, your options are very limited because everyone is wanting to travel, and much like what we’ve seen, service levels are not at 100 percent,” so travelers should plan accordingly.

As soon as you have any thoughts or are curious about destinations, talk to a travel advisor. It’s never too early to begin discussions about budget or style (adventurous, romantic, a combination). Also, make sure your passport is valid. Some locations now require that passports stay valid six months past your return date.
