As a global society, we’ve faced some major changes to what we see as “normal” in the past few years. 2020 changed everything, and all of that change seemed to hit us with the force of a wrecking ball in March of that year. All of a sudden, everything we took for granted became incredibly precious: time with family or friends, eating out, going to the gym—even just going to the corner store. Our incredibly “social” world became self-isolated, and we realized how much we need face-to-face interaction and togetherness. Two years after the first doors were shuttered due to a pandemic none of us saw coming, we’re reaching a new normal, one that seems able to co-exist with the existence of something that once terrified us. As with all things that we go through, we’ve learned things about ourselves and about other people, and there have been both good and bad takeaways from all of this. That’s life, and if you’re living, you’re learning. You’re also loving—and that’s what this issue is all about: love and the celebration of it through marriage. As someone who had what is now trendily called a “micro wedding” back in the days before it was a thing, I appreciate many of these stories for the fact that they were like mine— small and intimate, focusing on just us. COVID may have necessitated the micro wedding, but it seems to be outlasting the necessity and is becoming more of the norm. Join us in celebrating along with these couples, and get to know some of the absolutely amazing people behind the scenes of weddings both big and small in our Alexandria community. Love to you all,

At Home with Julia an exclusive vip tour of julia child's georgetown home story by liesel schmidt | photography courtesy of gray attiliis homes
With its light, buttery clapboard siding, a multitude of mullioned windows and French blue door, the house where Julia Child once resided at 2706 Olive Street Northwest in Georgetown is everything one could imagine for the Francophile’s stateside home, steeped in history that predates Child’s residency by 80 years. There’s a quaintness one would expect, an appeal that somehow seems so in keeping with the character of the famed chef and her love of simplicity. Built in 1869 by Edgar Murphy, an African American carpenter from West Virginia, the home remained in the family until his wife’s death in 1914, six years after Murphy himself died in 1908. “It’s one of the few houses left after gentrification turned the area [that was] owned by a Black family,” notes Rory Veevers-Carter, who purchased the house in 2015. The home faded into anonymity until Paul and Julia Child bought it in 1948—and notably became the first house they owned after they were married. Not long after they bought it, however, Paul’s work with the 14 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
U.S. Information Agency sent him on assignment to Paris, where Julia’s love of French cooking was born. During those years in Paris, the home was rented out. It wasn’t until the Childs returned from France in 1956 that they actually lived in the house themselves. Upon moving into the home, one of Julia’s first projects was—of course—to renovate the kitchen, which included the purchase of a new commercial gas range with six burners and a steel griddle. “I loved it so much, I vowed to take it to my grave!” Julia wrote in her memoirs of the Garland model 182, which is now on display in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The new kitchen was perfect for Julia’s French cooking classes, which she began teaching in her home to a group of women. The new stove was also the very instrument she used to test recipes for her cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. After Paul and Julia left Washington in 1959, the house was purchased and lived in by Consuelo Echeverria in the 1960s. Echeverria hired

architect, Hugh Newell Jacobsen, to remodel it. The work included the addition of a spiral staircase and a two-story wall of glass along the back of the house. Over the next three decades, the home fell into disrepair and eventually became a blot on the neighborhood. Bought with a vision in mind, the home became a project for Veevers-Carter, who worked with architect Dale Overmyer on the renovation. Among one of the notable changes was the addition of floating stairs, which replaced the spiral stairs, created with wood reclaimed from the house. Despite the renovations the home had undergone over the course of its lifetime, Veevers-Carter was determined to preserve its character to the best of his ability. Rustic white oak planks now replace the rotted floors original to the home. The kitchen now boasts 16 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
a large island with an eight-burner range, a double oven, a wine refrigerator and a farmhouse sink. Rustic wood beams run the length of the ceiling. Improvements all— and ones certainly worthy of Julia Child. Still, amid the updates are peeks at the home’s storied past. During the course of demolition, Veevers-Carter discovered paint on a wall whose shade matched that of the paint Julia used in her Cambridge, Massachusetts, kitchen, which has been re-created at the Smithsonian. Instead of simply painting over it, Veevers-Carter preserved and protected the paint on the wall by encasing it with an old window from the house. Further treasures were found during the excavation of the lowest level, revealing relics that were later offered to a D.C. archaeological program.
Digging down approximately 15 feet, Veevers-Carter converted a small mechanical room under the kitchen into an entire additional floor, complete with a den, laundry room and a pink marble-tiled steam room. With so much work to be done, the renovation naturally took longer than expected. This was due, in part, to the permitting process alone, which took three years. Once complete, the beautifully-restored home was listed with TTR Sotheby’s International Realty at $3.5 million and sold for $3.3 million on January 14, 2022. MARCH 2022 • 17

There is such an artful blending of old and new. Being such a Julia Child fan, it was very exciting to be involved in the sale.”

DJ LANIE B MORE THAN JUST A SMALL-TOWN EVENT DJ story by liesel schmidt
Lanie Fern, or “DJ Lanie B” as she prefers to be known, has some serious international cred to her name—and she’s brought it to the DC area. “I started deejaying in Doha, Qatar, for an international audience,” Fern explains of how she broke into the industry. “I was living and working there for over three years. Then, in 2018, I started learning how to deejay and began playing at boat parties, private parties and a club. When I moved to the Bay Area from Qatar, I started playing more bars, clubs and restaurants as well as events. When the pandemic hit, I was unable to work. I was doing weekly radio shows in the UK, US and Ibiza, Spain, to keep doing what I loved. I even did a guest spot for a radio station in Belgium. The radio shows gave me global exposure for my one-hour mixes every week, which was really exciting to see that people were listening from all over the world.”
Clearly, Fern is passionate about her work, and that passion has translated to success and bookings for a slew of incredible events. Naturally, with the industry being as competitive as it is, Fern must set herself apart and has done so quite effectively. “What sets me apart first and foremost is being female,” she says. “How many female deejays do you see in lineups at music festivals—or anywhere? What I’m also good at is playing music that people love. I mostly play what is popular in Europe and big cities in the US—house music. For the people who want to hear their favorite pop music, I have a house remix that is even more high-energy than the original renditions. I also play deep house—also known as chillout or lounge—which is perfect for private parties or wine bars where you just want some nice background music that isn't overpowering. Because I love world beats, I also play Afro house and tribal as well as Latin and reggae. For the lovers of old school, I love to play disco and nu-disco, which is new music with that disco feel. Other genres that I play are melodic house and techno. Each DJ has his or her own unique selection of tracks or way of mixing, and that's what people should look at before booking.”

VIP FINANCES
to combine or not to combine... finances When you choose to spend the rest of your lives together, how do you decide?
S TO RY BY JAC O B S O N T R U E X , C F P ® O F M C L AU G H L I N RY D E R I N V E S T M E N T S
Combining lives through marriage is an exciting chapter. With the excitement comes uncertainty and challenges regarding finances. Historically, it was tradition to combine money affairs. Today, couples can find ease, independence and security by keeping their assets separate while avoiding potential areas of conflict. To figure out if combining finances is best for your situation, it is imperative to be open with your partner about expectations. Like relationships in general, a couple should approach finances with an understanding of each partners' values, goals and priorities. I like to remind clients that there is no right or wrong solution or "one-size-fits-all" to tackling finances before or during marriage. Each state has different laws, but it is generally true that after you get married, you legally share assets and earned income. The sharing of those finances is up to you. Each situation is subjective and requires work. Couples should weigh the pros and cons before deciding if they should combine finances. There are several benefits to combining finances as couples plan and merge their lives. Whether saving for short or long-term goals, combining assets can make
it easier to track objectives. Short-term goals can be something like a vacation and long-term can be paying off debt, buying a house, retirement or paying for education. With complicated and ever-changing objectives comes some level of budgeting. Having fewer accounts and combining cash flows makes it easier to establish a budget. This is especially true with common goals and the likely existence of inequality of expenses, debts and income. Other potential advantages for combining assets are tracking, transparency, control, accessibility and easier estate planning. In dealing with surprises, and life is full of them, joint accounts with rights of survivorship allow both partners control and accessibility. This can reduce liquidity issues in an emergency. Joint accounts can also be a great estate-planning tool by allowing uninterrupted access after a partner has passed. In periods of hardships, people appreciate as little work and headaches as possible.

So, why not combine finances? While there are several advantages, it can sometimes create more headaches than couples want. Some couples may choose to keep separate finances or only merge a few. We tend to see that more often in second marriages as one or both parties are weary from divorce. It could be a perception or value of independence and control. We find the usual cause for separation of finances is to avoid a point of contention that can cause resentment in relationships; the unequal split of cash flows, debts and assets. In these scenarios, neither person worries about the other contributing or detracting more than their share as it is out of their control and burden. If you know inequality may create resentment, financial separation may be a key to a happier marriage. I want to reiterate the importance of understanding each partners’ values because finance is often a sensitive subject. Acknowledging differences, setting goals, planning accordingly, creating systems and working together allow for a successful, wealthy marriage. We recognize that process can be a complicated endeavor for some. If you are struggling with any of the courses of action, you should consider consulting a financial planner to assist. Should you have any questions about combining finances or wealth management in general, we are happy to help you regardless of your chapter in life.

Building on 20 years of experience in finance, Shawn McLaughlin founded his own company, McLaughlin Ryder Investments, Inc., in 2003 with the hope of bringing his expertise to clients and offering them a way to build their own financial wealth. After two decades, McLaughlin remains incredibly passionate about his work. “I love the feeling of enormous satisfaction that I am helping individuals and families with financial decisions that aid in achieving goals that often seem daunting—such as saving for their children’s college costs when the children are very young. Knowing others are counting on me to help them keeps me passionate, even when things are challenging. My clients know I am here and watching their investments very carefully. They know they can trust me to be patient and thoughtful in my decision-making.”

Naturally, the financial industry has changed a great deal over the years, but McLaughlin remains at the top of his game. “I am always reading current articles regarding our economy, the markets and my industry,” he says. “I also talk to experts in my field on a regular basis. Technology has been a big factor. Today, quotes are instantaneous. I have to remain current or my clients may tell me something they read or heard on CNBC before I have!”

They create an experience that brings guests back for dinner and special occasions. “We love welcoming all of our guests into our home and sharing those experiences with them,” says Chelsea, who, like her husband, has worked in the restaurant industry for decades, holding experience in everything from small-town bars and 710 KING ST, ALEXANDRIA, VA 22314 • (703) 888-1951 WWW.VILLAGEBRAUHAUS.COM

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY M HARRIS STUDIOS
Despite having no previous experience in event or wedding planning, Amanda Smith took a leap and utilized her background in design to make something other than the “cold and warm mail” that she had been creating for 10 years as part of her work for non-profits. Instead, she turned her creative force to weddings, launching White Pumpkin in 2009. “I didn't really know where to start,” she recalls. “As I was finding my way, I worked in a busy flower shop in Springfield, Virginia. The four years I spent there taught me a great deal about flowers as well as all of the work that goes into designing and coordinating the logistics, delivery and setup of an event.”
still in place. “Regardless of what it looks like, all the same parts are there,” she notes. “Two people that love each other, the families, the ceremony, the reception. Of course, we go through different trends of flowers and decor. And I do feel that the planning time frame is getting shorter. But I stay on top of things by looking to my vendors to educate me on what is new in their specialty. I’m also part of an industry networking group, AWP, where they hold meetings with educational components.”
More than a decade later, White Pumpkin has become a successful event consultancy and Smith has realized her passion. “I love working with couples and their families. They're so excited and nervous and that kind of energy is infectious and wonderful to be around,” she says. “With so much going on and so much to do, it can be incredibly challenging, but this is something that I've built and that makes me very proud.” As much as the wedding industry—and weddings themselves—have changed, Smith sees the fundamentals W W W.W H I T E P U M P K I N W E D . In recent years, however, there has been a shift to the avant garde, welcoming everything from multicolored gowns to jumpsuits on a walk down the aisle. But gaining some of the greatest attention has been the bridal tux, worn by brides with a very unique sense of style and a desire to stand out and be different. Naturally, it takes finding the right designer to create a bridal tux worthy of the most important day in a woman’s life. Bespoke clothier, Tom James, has shifted their specialization in creating quality menswear to focus more on women’s clothing and accessories—making them the ideal maker of tuxedos to suit the needs of a woman on her wedding day. “For years, we specialized in men’s business wear, smart casual and formal wear,” says Wardrobe Consultant Sarah Slaper, who has been with the company since 2011. “Not anymore. We have always served women, as well, but never in the way in which they deserved. I am proud to say that, as of 2019, we rolled out a brand-new women’s line, including a variety of fabrics and styles as well as accessories, which allows us to serve our female clientele better than ever.” Boasting more than 100 offices worldwide, Tom James does not operate any physical stores, but rather reaches its clients through the symbiotic workings of those offices
and through their website. “We come to you!” says Slaper. “No more ordering online, hoping things fit or dealing with returning garments that don’t, no carving out time from your family schedule, no driving in traffic or parking in busy parking lots. What you receive from Tom James is a service-minded personal relationship with a company that creates an American-made garment of quality and exceptional fit.” The impetus for the bridal tux was more than just a jump into the fray to offer something that no one else did. “A client of mine brought me a picture from some awards show she’d seen and said, ‘I want this!’ The rest is history,” Slaper recalls. The rise of women’s tuxes—and their subsequent presence in the bridal world—is, in Slaper’s estimation, largely due to the media. “Honestly, I think that seeing celebrities rock tuxedos in beautiful satins, silks and velvets—no matter their gender—has inspired men and women alike to jump outside of their comfort zone and try something new,” she posits. “Plus, there’s something incredibly appealing about the thought of wearing a beautifully-tailored tuxedo that is comfortable but also badass and completely unique.” Unique. Therein lies the greatest power of the bridal tuxedo. In a world where brides do their utmost to stand out from the crowd, a tux can be the answer to the question—with the added bonus of being, as Slaper MARCH 2022 • 37

We have silks inspired by masquerade balls of the past, velvets in a rainbow of colors, sparkles that make for outstanding party jackets and you can’t forget the styling options. I’m a sucker for a red bottom or a Valentino. Both shoes can give a simple black satin tuxedo a bit of feminine edge. I have loads of clients that prefer more of a loafer style flat such as a Ferragamo or, for a mix of feminine and masculine energy, a loafer or lace up from Angela Scott.”

From there, I’ll make some nips and tucks and deliver your final garment in about two to three weeks after your initial first fitting.”
Much like bridal gowns, tuxes require planning. “I suggest you allow yourself about 12 weeks from your initial consultation so that the creation of your garment is not rushed,” Slaper advises. “At our first meeting, we pick out SARAH SLAPER • (440) 346-0314 • S.SLAPER@TOMJAMES.COM • 38 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

I LIKE MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY AND BEING A PART OF CAPTURING SUCH A SPECIAL TIME IN THEIR LIVES. - ASA O R R I N - B R OW N
A professional photographer since 1998, Asa Orrin-Brown started his career mostly selling landscape and nature photography, though he was known to take wedding photos for friends here and there as side projects. After starting By Asa Photography in 2014, he became known for his unique techniques and ability to capture a moment, making him a sought-after photographer for weddings. “I think people want me to photograph their weddings mostly because of my documentary style and the lighting techniques I use, which work well for a wide range of skin tones and create crisp images and vibrant colors,” he says. “The off-camera lighting techniques are somewhat unique and the specific techniques I use are ones that I have developed over more than a decade. That sets me apart. Good reviews and an eagerness to please probably don’t hurt, either.” Of all the types of photography he could do, Orrin-Brown finds a lot to love with weddings. “On my website, I wrote, ‘One of the things I love about portrait and wedding photography is how relevant they are, allowing for an exciting creative process and simultaneously creating something that is perpetually meaningful to others,’” he quotes. “I think that's still pretty accurate. I chose weddings because I really do like making people happy with my art. I was a sculpture student when I went back to school, and I just couldn't bring myself to pour endless creative energy into making something that most people would be indifferent to. Wedding photography is so much more fulfilling creatively.” Despite the challenges that naturally arise with weddings, Orrin-Brown still keeps his passion for his work alive. “I like making people happy and being a part of capturing such a special time in their lives,” he says. “With wedding photography, I get to be creative and put my energy into making something that will mean so much to my clients forever and hold a great deal of significance to them and their families. For me, that is a huge motivation.” W W W . B Y A S A P H O T O G R A P H Y. C O M MARCH 2022 • 41

After meeting in a dive bar in Annapolis, Cassandra Maloney and Jeremiah Sullivan III dove into love, dating for just over a year before Jerry realized that it was time to dive all the way in. “He proposed on my birthday in December of 2018,” says Cassandra, who works as a commercial real estate broker, while Jerry is a security consultant. “He reserved an igloo at the Four Seasons in DC so our dog Lucy could join us. That evening, he ordered rabbit pasta for Lucy because she always likes to chase rabbits but never manages to catch them. We enjoyed a lovely, romantic dinner and after dinner, we walked along the monuments until we reached the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. He proposed in the rotunda of the memorial, which is where his father proposed to his mother. He gave me an antique ring that was around 100 years old, with sapphires, which are my favorite.” Six months later, on June 8, 2019, Cassandra wore a lace gown with a mermaid silhouette as she walked down the aisle at St. Paul’s Episcopal to meet Jerry at the altar. Vows exchanged, they joined their guests for a buffet-style reception at Hummingbird that showcased the restaurant’s delicious food. Sweetening up the celebration, the couple opted for an assortment of ice cream cakes from Cold Stone instead of a traditional tiered wedding cake. “We love ice cream cakes, and they make an appearance in most of our special events—including birthdays,” Cassandra notes. “All of the cakes were coated in chocolate ganache and we framed our engagement photo on one cake and our first date [photo] on another cake.” After indulging in ice cream, the newlyweds and their guests enjoyed a nighttime snack bar with French fries, mini burgers and key lime pies. After the festivities came to a close, the couple was sent off to start their honeymoon in Bar Harbor, Maine. MARCH 2022 • 43

Some say that online dating works, some say that it doesn’t. But Rob McFadden and Cristina Santos are proof that meeting online can lead to a true relationship. Seven years after meeting online, they actually began dating—and then they fell in love. Fortunately, it didn’t take another seven years for Rob to realize what he had in Cristina and that he wanted her to be his wife. “I helped design my ring, so I knew it was coming—but he definitely surprised me!” recalls Cristina, an account manager at ChurnZero, while Rob is an engineer manager at Micron. “Because Halloween fell on a Sunday, I figured it was a great idea to have a get-together and dress up. Rob ended up proposing in front of my parents and family with a lovely speech while I was wearing alien antennas!” Alien antennae replaced by a one-shoulder ivory gown, Cristina walked down the aisle on December 4, 2021, in the back garden at the Carlyle House in Old Town Alexandria to meet Rob at the altar. They exchanged vows in front of a small gathering that included only their parents and their son. After being pronounced married, the wedding party adjourned to Blackwall Hitch for an intimate dinner set against the romantic lights of the boat parade. After dining and toasting their new life with champagne, the couple cut into a small vanilla sponge cake with wild berry filling and buttercream frosting. With the future ahead of them, the newly married McFaddens look forward to a honeymoon in Mexico set for April. MARCH 2022 • 45

“Well, we met in North Carolina…” And so begins Megan Guidi’s version of how she and Caleb Kadrmas met in September of 2018. While there is much more to the story than that, those first words are how Meg likes to describe the meeting. “Caleb always laughs at me for starting the story like that because, without context, it’s a really odd way to start a story,” she says, explaining that neither of them would normally have been in that particular place at that particular time. Meg just moved to North Carolina from California for grad school that summer, and Caleb had just gotten home from time overseas to return to his duty station along the coast of North Carolina. “I think fate was really working some magic getting the two of us together.” A couple years of dating and a move to Virginia later, Caleb knew it was time to ask Meg the question that would change their lives forever. “As the moving truck pulled off, Caleb asked me to come out into our backyard with him and to pick a spot that would be ‘our spot’ in the yard,” says Meg, a career counselor at George Mason University, while Caleb serves in the Marine Corps. “I pointed to a spot under an apple tree, and he placed two chairs under there and we reflected on what this next chapter would bring. Moments later, he was on his knee and saying something very clever about how he felt this was the right time/place/moment as the boxes being delivered symbolized the unpacking of the rest of our lives together.” Two years and 363 days after their first date, on October 18, 2021, Meg walked down the aisle at River Farm in Alexandria wearing a simple and elegant fitted off-the-shoulder white gown with a cathedral-length veil adorned with pearls. After exchanging vows, the couple joined their guests for a reception at Cedar Knoll Restaurant, where they dined on a delicious meal before cutting into their cake. As the celebration came to a close, the newly married Kadrmases were sent off to start honeymooning across New England. MARCH 2022 • 47

After meeting at Deloitte Consulting in 2015, Courtney Cadel and Alden Hinds began dating and realized they had much more in common than just their jobs supporting the federal government. Three years of dating later, Alden asked Courtney to marry him in a very memorable way. “He proposed after we finished a Spartan Race on Citi Field Stadium in Queens, New York, in 2019,” Courtney recalls. “He used a fake ring he’d bought for $20 on Amazon to propose and only told me about it after I had posted about it on social media and showed my mother! Later, he gave me the real ring from King's Jewelry.” Just over a year and a half later, on December 20, 2020, Courtney wore a white boho style fitto-flare dress with a sweetheart neckline and an open back adorned in lace and glass beading as she and Alden exchanged vows under the gazebo by the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria. Having been pronounced married, the newlywed Hindses joined their guests for a reception at Blackwall Hitch, where they dined on a brunch menu that included chicken and waffles. Originally slated for May in Punta Cana, the rescheduled wedding was planned and executed in two weeks—though it came together beautifully, with a few memorable details. “My mother and I made a plaster wedding cake the night before the wedding instead of serving a real one and people kept trying to cut it!” Courtney laughs. After being sent off to begin their honeymoon, the newlyweds spent their first days together as man and wife in Cabo San Lucas. MARCH 2022 • 49

Living in a small town has its perks—one being that everyone knows everyone, and if they don’t, they can probably introduce you. For Stephanie Colon and Gregory Revollo, meeting in the one-square-mile New Jersey town where they both grew up was a matter of being introduced by mutual friends. The two hit it off and began an on-again-off-again relationship that seemed a matter of timing. But when they were finally ready for one another—and something lasting—they began seriously dating in 2014. Six years later, Greg knew he wanted Stephanie to be in his life forever—but again, timing came into play. “Greg wanted to propose in April of 2020 on a trip we planned for Spain, but COVID delayed the proposal,” says Stephanie, who works as a speech language pathologist, while Greg serves as a police officer. “Greg had to hold and hide the ring until later that summer. We finally took a trip to Ocean City in August with my sisters and their families, and Greg felt it was the right time to do it. He waited until the sun began to set, and in the middle of taking pictures with everyone, Greg snuck up behind me and popped the question. Even though it was not how he envisioned it, neither of us could have been happier.” Just over a year later, on November 5, 2021, Stephanie wore an ivory ballgown with all-over lace detailing and cutouts on the bodice as she exchanged vows with Greg at the Hacienda Siesta Alegre in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico with 88 of their loved ones around them. After being pronounced married, the couple joined their guests for an on-site reception. Sent off with wishes for a beautiful future, the couple honeymooned on a small Puerto Rican island called Vieques. MARCH 2022 • 51

“You fine like wine.” Those are the four words Cody Fondahn first said to Ashley Bell when they first met—though “met” and “said” could be used loosely, as the two actually found each other through the dating app, Hinge, in October of 2018. At the time, they were both living in Pensacola, Florida, where Cody was stationed with the U.S. Air Force, while Ashley worked there as a nurse. The two began dating, and a year later, said four more words that changed their lives forever. “Cody and I had gone out for Halloween on October 26th and came home late in the morning,” Ashley recalls. “After getting out of our costumes, I drunkenly told Cody how much I loved him. Cody replied with, ‘If you love me, then propose to me.’ He was joking, of course. But I got down on one knee and pretended to propose—to which he laughed and replied, ‘I can do better than that.’ He went to our closet and got out a ring that he’d had custom-designed, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I cried like a baby.” Nearly two years later, on September 4, 2021, Ashley wore a fitted gown of ivory lace with a keyhole back as she walked down the aisle at Airlie in Warrenton to exchange vows with Cody. After being pronounced married, they joined their guests for a reception on the grounds at the pavilion, where they dined on a seated dinner of farm-totable fare. After cutting into a three-tiered halfnaked almond raspberry cake decorated with small rose blossoms and eucalyptus bundles, the newly married Fondahns were sent off to honeymoon in Miami and are now back home, looking forward to a new addition in September. When Grace Sovine and Trae Mazza met as high schoolers in 2010, the two immediately had a connection—but timing wasn’t on their side. “I was hanging out with a few friends when Trae ran past with one of his family’s dogs, Luna,” Grace recalls of their first meeting. “Luna caught my attention first, followed quickly by Trae’s blue eyes. It wasn’t until two years later, when we were seniors, that we finally got together.” A couple of years of dating came to an end when the distance between their two colleges became an obstacle, though love won out in the end and brought them back together in 2016. Two years later, Trae asked Grace to be his bride. “I had planned to go to a concert with a friend the day he actually planned to propose, but Trae was adamant that we needed to go on a hike in Shenandoah National Park that Saturday,” recalls Grace, who owns her own company consulting on virtual events, while Trae works in offensive cyber security. “Halfway through the hike, we paused for a snack and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!” Two years later, on October 10, 2020, they married in a small backyard ceremony at Grace’s mother’s home in Woodbridge, VA. A year following, the couple held a wedding celebration, including a vow renewal and reception, on October 23, 2021, at Gunston Hall. Wearing a long-sleeved, off-the-shoulder lace gown with a removable tulle overskirt, Grace exchanged vows for the second time with Trae—this time in front of their loved ones. THE POWER OF
boudoir
STORY BY JORGE MARTINEZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARLAYNE LARSEN
Merriam-Webster defines boudoir as “a woman's dressing room, bedroom or private sitting room.” The word boudoir conjures thoughts of intimacy, sensuality, femininity and mystery. It is not uncommon these days for a woman to gift her partner boudoir images, allowing her to offer a glimpse into an uninhibited side not often seen. Boudoir, in terms of photography style, creates sensual, intimate and sometimes erotic images that highlight the beauty of women. Most people expect sexy poses in lingerie or in the nude. While this is not necessarily inaccurate, boudoir is about so much more. What most women may not realize is they will also walk out with a sense of confidence, empowerment and accomplishment. Boudoir has now progressed into a new genre called “empowerment photography." Over the past decade, women across the DMV have taken the power of boudoir and used it to express themselves, recognize their strength and gain confidence from putting their inner and outer beauty on display. One of the most reputable boudoir and women’s intimate portraiture studios is Marlayne Larsen Boudoir 58 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

She saw the growth of this empowerment photography trend and switched to boudoir about six years ago. Marlayne recognizes that feeling empowered takes on a different meaning to different women – from sexy and carefree to smart and in control. For example, one woman might feel empowered putting on business attire and sitting in an office that has her name and title on a plaque, while another woman might feel empowered when in exercise gear and riding a Peloton bike, running or lifting weights.
“AFTER EACH PHOTOSHOOT, I MAKE SURE MY CLIENTS NOT ONLY SEE THAT THEY ARE PERFECT, BUT ALSO FEEL IT.” - MARLAYNE LARSEN
Marlayne tells clients that her commitment to them is to capture tasteful, beautiful and timeless photos. “My intent is always to ensure that every woman is proud of who they are and how they look. My clients leave their sessions empowered, wondering why they were ever nervous, and asking when they can book another session.” A session with Marlayne includes being greeted upon arrival at her inhome studio and offered a beverage of choice. The clients will then spend the next hour or so in a chair, where Marlayne gets to know them on a more personal level while the client gets all glammed up by her colleague, Amanda, a professional hair and makeup artist. The studio also offers an extensive array of clothing options (with over a thousand pieces ranging in sizes from XS-5XL) and different rooms and scenes for any taste. “As women, we are so hard on ourselves and try to live up to completely unrealistic expectations that make us think we are less than perfect,” says Marlayne. “After
each photoshoot, I make sure my clients not only see that they are perfect, but also feel it.” The end results are photographs that capture the essence, beauty and confidence of every woman she works with. This is when boudoir photography turns into a gift of self-love, learning to be vulnerable and reaping the rewards from it. The boudoir experience ends up being about what makes every woman amazing.

When I Look Into Your Eyes BROWS • LASHES • PERMANENT MAKEUP FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY story by liesel schmidt
There’s a saying that eyes are the windows to your soul, and there’s no day more important than your wedding to show what’s in your heart. So the eyes? Those need to dazzle—both for your intended as well as for those wedding pics that will last forever. Thankfully, we’ve got some experts on-hand to give us some inside tips on how to make sure your eyes are as sparklingly stunning as that dress you’re rocking.
For Zhibek “Jiba” Elemanova of DMV Beauty Clinic, eyes are incredibly important to highlight—so much so that she’s built a company around them. “The best way to make your eyes stand out on your wedding day is
Brows are one thing that sets the eyes off, and as queen of all things brow, Simoné Fennell of Good Brows believes that brows should get their fair share of attention before the big day. “Grow your brows out for four to six weeks prior to your appointment with a brow artist to give them plenty of hair to work with," she advises. “Then, have your brows shaped two weeks prior to your wedding date. This ensures that, if you have a skin reaction, you'll have enough time for your skin to clear up before your big day. Finally, during your makeup trial, bring pictures of how you want your brows to look so your makeup artist can have a visual understanding of what you want.” A visual and master brow artist, Fennell has over 11 years of experience in the industry, opening Good Brows to the community of Old Town Alexandria in 2018. “Brows are approached as artwork at Good Brows, and every client leaves with a beautiful piece of original art on their brows,” she says. Good Brows specializes in permanent makeup services (powder ombre brow tattoo), professional brow wax and permanent makeup training. MARCH 2022 • 61
day. For Briscan, lashes are the best way to achieve a look you’ll love. “Eyelash extensions offer a natural, but glamourous and gorgeous look that enhances the eyes' natural features and wonder,” she says. “Mascara runs, smears and smudges—especially on white napkins, white sleeves and, of course, on your beautiful white wedding gown. A great solution is natural-looking eyelash extensions that make your eyes look big, bold, bright and amazing! Lash extensions frame your eyes, enhancing them even more and making them gorgeous. What better time for bigger and brighter eyes than on your wedding day?” Boasting a beautician’s license acquired in Italy, Briscan was inspired by the art around her, taking that love of art and creativity to launch Wink Lash Art. Offering products imported from Europe and an uncompromising standard of excellence, Wink is a collaborative team in constant evolution with over 65 years of collective talent and management. “We care about our guests from start to finish and always go beyond expectations,” says Briscan. “Eye treatments are unique to each client, and we ensure that uniqueness is recognized each time you return to Wink Lash Art. Our guests’ experiences with us are special.” As you plan your big day, make sure you give your eyes the attention they deserve—you’ll love what you see, and those eyes will make you sparkle even more than you already do.
to look natural,” she says. “Permanent makeup is one way to achieve that since regular makeup can wear off throughout the course of your day, while permanent makeup does not. Darker, fuller brows make eyes stand out with a combination of lash lift or classic lash extensions—which will also give you a youthful look.” Since March of 2020, DMV Beauty Clinic specializes in upscale beauty treatments including permanent makeup, lash lifts, brow lamination, microblading, brow architecture and lashes in addition to being the only business in Old Town Alexandria providing the Aquarelle lip blushing procedure to give lips a natural pink color and refined shape. “We are all about high-quality standards and offering innovative techniques that provide better results for our clients,” says Elemanova. “We highly customize everything we do for each client based on their desires and unique features.” Owner of Wink Lash Art, Bianca Briscan naturally sees the importance of eyes looking their best on your wedding 62 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

The historic century-old building that now houses Catoctin Creek Distillery has taken many forms over the years. It was originally built as a car dealership in 1921 and called the “Case Building” for the Case family who owned it for more than four generations. The building went through several transformations and reinventions before it was ultimately purchased by Catoctin Creek owners, Scott and Becky Harris, in 2012. With so much history preserved in the building, which was renovated and restored to respect its Art Moderne style, Catoctin Creek’s home base is an incredible venue for events of all kinds—including weddings. Naturally, the whiskey is a huge draw. But the building is a love story in itself, being the passion project of a couple who founded their business on a commitment to each other and desire to create a legacy. “Couples want to have their weddings with us because, firstly, they love the whiskey,” Scott notes. “All of our wedding parties have been fans of the spirit, of course. Fortunately, hairstylists have become something akin to artists, able to create masterpieces with hair that not only defy imagination but are absolutely stunning. Welcome to Bridal Season 2022! We know you’ll love this year’s hair trends. CAPTIVATING + CLASSIC Getting a simple highlight and curls that softly frame your face is something that will never go out of vogue. Let your stylist know you want a more effortless, natural look—this one is sure to be a winner. ELEGANT + ROMANTIC A mixture of French-plaiting with a loosely woven bun; this is a romantic look that straddles the line between elegant and slightly unrefined. With escaped tendrils that set off your face, you’ll fall in love with the way this updo gives volume without the look of being overly done.
Braids are versatile and in high demand this wedding season. From loose, braided crowns to flowing French braids, braided hairstyles exude romance. An added bonus is that they are super fun to accessorize. Think jewel-toned hairpins, beaded headbands, flowers, ornate hair clips or flowing tulle. Options are limitless and create such a glamorous and dream-worthy vibe. amy benitez, salon dezen MARCH 2022 • 67
TWISTS + LOOPS Like the twists of a love knot, this updo is a series of twists and loops gathered to one side of your head, putting a new spin on an old standby. It is great for strapless gowns and showing off your décolletage. BOLD + TRENDY For trendsetters and brides who love a bold statement, buns are a must—especially when they come in multiples. Running from crown to nape, this series of buns is a great look for anyone wanting to make their hair the star of the show and leave the veil behind. CASCADES + CURLS Gathering to one side, this cascade of hair is a beautiful mess with just enough curl and styling to make it more intentional. It is great for pairing with a gown that is elaborate enough on its own to need a non-compete clause. COMPLEX + MESMERIZING Twists and braids and coils, oh, my! This is one look that may be mixing metaphors, but it still manages to be a deft work of fusion rather than confusion. Simply elegant in the front, you’re mesmerizingly complex and unexpectedly fun in the back—aren’t we all?
"With the ever-changing climate we have been in, hair has also been ever-changing--and wedding style will follow that trend. I believe brides are going to take control by combining the old with the new. We will see more updos from the past with a twist as well as loose braids, messy buns, taut ponytails with long braids and bouffants with cascading curls." - joi dreams, joi dreams salon

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HONEY & LAVENDER EVENTS
A natural-born planner, Maya Mahoney has always loved creating events—even as a child. It stood to reason, then, that she took what started as a side hustle and grew it into a full-time job with her very own company. “Ever since I can remember, I have always led and worked on events, and all of my 9 to 5 jobs had event components to them,” she notes. “And if they didn't, I quickly changed that.” Launched in 2017, Honey & Lavender (H&L) Events is Mahoney’s dream brought to fruition. What started as a part-time focus later became a full-time focus in 2020. “I haven’t looked back since!” she says. Naturally, it takes that special something to make couples fall in love with a wedding planner, and Mahoney has that in spades. “One thing that sets H&L apart is our approachability, flexibility and experience,” she says. “I’m
often told how easy my team and I are to talk to and work with. We are down-to-earth and friendly, and approach clients as friends and family. We always advocate for our clients to make sure they are taken care of. The fact that people have entrusted me to lead important and memorable events in their lives is incredible to me, and I'm living my dream every day, doing what I love and being my own boss. I love the people I get to meet and work with, and I also love the creative latitude I am given.” Naturally, the last few years have presented challenges above and beyond those typical to the wedding planning industry, but Mahoney has met them head on and adapted to meet the needs of changing rules, regulations and social norms. “We have the pandemic to thank for this, but couples are changing their perspectives and thoughts on having large weddings and are opting for more intimate affairs,” she notes. “The key to staying relevant as a planner is to be flexible and meet your clients, all of them, where they are with their needs and their vision.”

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIE SOCHER
By definition, boudoir photography is an intimate form of professional photography featuring the subject in various forms of undress; most commonly in lingerie. For women especially, it is an empowering experience, one that gives them a greater sense of confidence in their bodies. It’s also a great way to awaken inner sensuality and remind someone just how sexy they can be. As a photographer specializing in the niche genre of boudoir photography, Julie Socher has seen the transformative effect it can have on her clients and she’s deeply honored to be part of their journey. “We live in a world where women are constantly comparing their own bodies and self-worth to others and there's a feeling of never being enough,” she says. “My work is about reconnecting women to their internal energy and promoting their confidence, worthiness and identity in the most feminine way. When you're able to set yourself free from your own negative self-perceptions, there's a new-found assurance that trickles down in all areas of your own life and not just your relationship with your body.”
Establishing Julie Socher Photography, LLC, in 2010, Socher found her true passion after her first session in boudoir photography made her realize the impact it could make on someone’s life. “When I saw such a positive emotional reaction from my first client to her photos, it was then that I realized just how transformative and healing it can be for women.” More than just a photo session, Socher makes it an entire experience, which puts her clients at ease. “My studio is a full-service luxury studio,” she says. “I meet all my clients before they book via Zoom or a phone call and I guide them through the entire experience, from what to expect to what to wear. During the ordering process, we go through each image and design the album or photo product of their choice. We customize the experience for each client, whether you're a bride creating the most epic gift for your fiancé, a mom honoring her body post-baby or the milestone celebrator from birthdays to health wins and challenging triumphs. I also guide my clients with very detailed pose coaching into all the looks throughout the session.”

A Q+A WITH NICOLE RYAN OF GUNSTON HALL story by liesel schmidt how long have you been an event planner?
Since 2013. I oversee the entire private rental program at Gunston Hall, which also includes events such as baby showers, rehearsal dinners, luncheons, conferences, meetings, a British car show, a wine festival and more! what first interested you about the industry?
I was a history major in college. I knew I wanted to work in the museum field, so during two internships at museums in the Richmond area, I was able to intern more specifically in areas such as donor/private events as well as marketing and development. I knew right away that my love of history, museums, hospitality and customer service would mesh well if I could find a job at a museum in the private event side of things. After moving to NoVA after college in 2013, I was able to land a job with a small
event company as well as a job at Gunston Hall. After being promoted in spring of 2014, I became full-time at Gunston Hall and have been here since as the Leader of Business Enterprise, heading up the entire rental department and Museum Shop. what do you love most about your work?
No event is the same! One day, we could have a wedding, the next could be a car show, followed by a dog draft test on our grounds. I pride myself on being focused on the contracting party from beginning to end and I feel like that shows when guests are having a wonderful experience. what is your biggest challenge in planning a wedding?
Not every couple or event is the same, which is exactly how it should be. However, working for over eight years at the same venue can have its challenges when trying to be imaginative on new ideas for decorations, table decor, etc. for couples or contracting parties that want to be completely different from past events. The space is only so big and isn't a movable location, so I try to stay up-to-date on new ideas and trends through social media, Pinterest and wedding magazines for events to try out. MARCH 2022 • 73
what do people love most about working with you?
My passion for my job, going above and beyond for special requests, being flexible in the moment to make a change to the event and my customer service skills of being hospitable and welcoming. what makes Gunston Hall such an incredible venue?
With 550 acres of beautiful landscape and a breathtaking vista of the Potomac, the grounds make for an experience to remember. All rentals of Gunston Hall also include tours of the historic house, allowing for guests to learn the history of Gunston Hall and George Mason. what do couples love about Gunston Hall and having their weddings there?
how have you pivoted to make weddings a reality over the past two years?
Micro weddings! Having personally had one, I couldn't speak enough about them and how magical the intimacy of a smaller event is. The ability to be flexible has been key during everything as literally one-day events could be 50 people and the next, 25 people. Smaller, more intimate weddings continue to be popular, which is why we are now offering a permanent Micro Package as one of our wedding packages. what keeps you passionate, despite the challenges?
Love and the ability to see couples stay strong and work through challenges to still find a way to have their special day even if it means pivoting to a micro wedding or postponing for a year.
We have lots of outdoor spaces that can be used for ceremonies, lawn games, cocktail hours and even a full reception. The inside space is rather plain on its own, so we allow couples a lot of flexibility in decorating. If no other events are scheduled the Friday before a wedding, we even allow two hours of complimentary setup time for decorating and a rehearsal walkthrough. The inside space opens to a beautiful private courtyard, which is half brick and half lawn, allowing for another great space for cocktail hours or even a tent and heaters to be used year-round. what are the amenities/services offered to wedding parties?
We offer an assortment of indoor/outdoor tables and chairs included with the venue rental. Wedding packages may include tours of the historic mansion, private bridal changing quarters and a dedicated staff member throughout your wedding planning process. The Ann Mason Room features internet connectivity and audiovisual capabilities for receptions and a full-size catering kitchen is available adjacent to the Ann Mason Room.

Specializing in quality jewelry since 1978 when Norman “Brad” Bradford bought the store from its original owner, King’s Jewelry has become Old Town’s premier destination for all things that glitter, with a reputation for customer service that is every bit as sparkling. “Our main priority isn’t just making a sale—it’s working with our customers, providing them with jewelry that is high quality and lasting,” says Brad’s wife, Cathy, who became part of the store’s day-to-day operations in 1986. Along with daughter, Tari, and sons, Andrew and Gregory, Cathy and Brad have created 76 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
a family environment that extends to their other employees as well as their relationships with their clientele—which, much like their jewelry, are lasting. Often built over years from the first purchase— most notably engagement rings—those lasting client relationships are incredibly important to the Bradfords and their staff at King’s. “We’ll build a connection with a customer who comes to us for an engagement ring, and that trust is there for the future,” says Cathy. “They return for wedding bands, anniversary and special occasion jewelry, even heirloom baby gifts. That kind of relationship is something we strive for.” Naturally, along with an extensive collection of gemstone and fashion jewelry, luxury watches and estate pieces, King’s offers a large selection of engagement and wedding rings in a variety of styles and sizes as well as custom pieces specially designed for clients whose vision falls outside the scope of their usual offerings. And while they have established an active presence through social media and their website, King’s doesn’t currently sell any jewelry online. “Jewelry needs to be held and admired. You need to be able to feel the weight of it, see how it’s made [and] admire how the facets of a diamond catch the light. That’s not something you can do online,” says Cathy. In working with their clients, the staff at King’s explains the different quality aspects of each piece so that an educated choice can be made—something that anyone looking for engagement rings or wedding bands certainly appreciates. After all, these are the first pieces that signify two lives joined. And so, the relationship with their jeweler begins.

Established in 1979 by brothers Franco and Pierro Landini, Landini Bros. is the creation of two men whose passion for food and close bond with each other gave them a dream to create a legacy. Offering traditionally rustic Italian ambiance made even more charming by the original features of the historic building in which they are located, the family feel is embodied by their staff—most of which have been at the restaurant for over a decade. Naturally, the staff at Landini Bros. loves events. The restaurant offers completely private rooms, exceptional food and beverage service, day-of planning to ensure the event runs smoothly and assistance sourcing flowers, décor, pastries and cakes—the latter usually from their sister restaurant, Junction Bakery and Bistro. All of that is reason enough to book Landini Bros. for a special occasion—but even more reason is their heart. “I have heard a multitude of reasons as to why couples chose us,” says Ashlie Dolce, manager and event coordinator. “The traditional rustic Italian décor, the true ‘Landini’ experience each and every one of our service staff members give, the fact that many guests have had the same server for more than ten years, the memories held at our restaurant, our food always being consistently delicious… the list goes on and on.” 115 KING ST. As high stress as coordinating an event can be, Dolce loves every minute of it—especially when it comes to wedding parties. “My favorite part of my job is planning rehearsal dinners, wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions,” she says. “Every single part of the process is enjoyable, starting with giving them the initial tour of our private dining to finalizing menu and décor and helping run the event on the day. Making everyone’s ideas come to life is the absolute best part of helping plan a wedding party.” The reward, of course, is seeing how it all comes together. “The gratitude, the smiles on everyone’s face during an event and the cleared—and sometimes, licked clean— plates from our delicious food is always incredible,” says Dolce. “I love and cherish the memories of planning and executing an event every time I see a guest whose party I helped plan.”

PHOTOGRAPHY HAS BEEN A LIFETIME HOBBY AND IT'S BEEN SO WONDERFUL TO PLAY A PART IN BRINGING MORE BEAUTY TO PEOPLES' LIVES AS THEIR PHOTOGRAPHER. - MICHELLE JONES
While her first foray into wedding photography was for an elopement in 2018, it wasn’t until 2020 that Michelle Jones formally established her photography business. “It was admittedly a strange year to start a new business during the pandemic, but it also felt so right to me because I felt even more strongly called to this role when it wasn’t possible to see friends and family,” she explains. “Photography has been a lifetime hobby and it’s been so wonderful to play a part in bringing more beauty to peoples’ lives as their photographer.”

Over the past two years, Michelle Jones Photography has become known for its commitment to clients and for Jones herself for her personality and ability to set her clients at ease. “I often advise couples that the most important thing to consider when selecting a wedding photographer is their personality,” she says. “Being photographed is an extremely intimate experience and the key to beautiful, authentic photos is feeling at ease when you’re in front of the camera. Having a good connection with your wedding photographer helps you feel relaxed and allows you to be your true self. I want all of my clients to feel cherished and cared for during their entire experience with me from start to finish. My wedding packages include a gifted engagement session because this session is crucial to achieving amazing wedding day portraits. I work to get to know my clients, which naturally helps clients feel at ease.” Jones has a passion for her work that shows in the quality of her photos as well as in her interactions with her clients. “I know firsthand the value of photographs. Tucked within Hotel Indigo, Hummingbird was launched in 2017 through the combined efforts of award-winning Chef Cathal Armstrong and Meshelle Armstrong of Restaurant Eve fame. As the masterminds behind the Eat Good Food Group, the duo’s dynamic created something special, and Hummingbird has become a culinary gem in Alexandria’s crown. Focused on American coastal cuisine, Hummingbird offers a menu that beautifully showcases seafood presented in elegantly conceptualized dishes. “Our intention was to present an energetic bar and kitchen inspired by the American spirit of cherished traditions: clambakes and crab boils, fish fries and oyster roasts,” says Meshelle. “Our menu follows the rhythm of the seasons and celebrates the seafood pride of our favorite coastal waters.” Even in the midst of construction, Meshelle saw the potential as an event venue in the airy and light-filled space—especially when it came to hosting weddings. Designed to mimic the colors of coastal blue waters, the interior is, indeed, perfect—and Armstrong capitalized on those hues with a tagline: “’We have the something blue covered!' Brides love it, and one even made her wedding shoes blue!” Armstrong notes. Giving even greater strength to their events side, GM of Hummingbird Kenneth Petty brings 23 years of experience 220 S UNION ST, ALEXANDRIA, VA 22314 • (703) 566-1355 WWW.HUMMINGBIRDVA.NET

in the hospitality industry and a deepening love of the event and wedding planning niche. Using his expertise, Petty focuses on personalizing each event towards the couple, seamlessly coordinating and creating simple yet chic experiences using the influences of nature and the environment. “Our hope is to provide intimate occasions for our special guests,” says Meshelle. “There is no more joyous an honor than to be entrusted with planning weddings for our couples, to create memories for them,” Petty adds. “Every guest, every event, every experience and every moment is unique and special, which is what keeps it exciting and fulfilling. The goal at Hummingbird is to design a personalized experience where couples enjoy the planning process as much as the evening of the celebration. Also, I just love decorating the cakes and planning an amazing party.”

The Art of Eloping FEATURING KIM OLSEN, THE AUTHOR OF YOUR WEDDING, YOUR WAY story by liesel schmidt | photography by renée c. gage photography
Planning, coordinating, cakes, dresses, tuxes, food, flowers, décor, venues, photography… we could go on. Clearly, there’s a lot that goes into a wedding from the moment the word “Yes!” is uttered (or screamed, depending on the level of excitement from the one being proposed to). It can take weeks, months or years to create the ideal day, to go from a vision in someone’s head to an event executed with as few foibles as possible that will be remembered forever and—hopefully—be the beginning of a beautiful life created by the two people at the center of it all. It’s an industry worth more than $70 billion in the U.S. alone and all of that is because, as a society, we are cultivated to want it bigger, better and more spectacular than everyone else.
elope, the day belongs to you and no one else,” she says. “There are so very many advantages. You eliminate stress, save money, remove complicated family dynamics and don’t have to worry about leaving anyone off the guest list or out of the wedding party. You won’t be saying your vows in front of a room full of people you might only half-know and you eliminate arguing with your partner about big things, like thousands of dollars being spent, and little things, like escort cards and welcome gift bags—things that ultimately either don’t matter or no one will remember."
Still, there are those who rebel against the idea of the massive spectacle of weddings and see, instead, the beauty of simplicity. In one word, these people want the alternative of something that has long been on the radar, but has gotten the cold shoulder as something done as a spur-of-the-moment lapse in judgement in Vegas: elopement. For author Kim Olsen, eloping is something that returns weddings to what they should always be about: the couple. “When you MARCH 2022 • 85
"...when couples go into debt to afford a big wedding, nearly half of these newlyweds consider divorce." - kim olsen
“Money is the number one thing married couples argue about,” she goes on. “And research shows that when couples go into debt to afford a big wedding, nearly half of these newlyweds consider divorce—solely because of money. Not the best way to start a marriage. On the other hand, couples who don’t go into debt to afford a wedding—meaning they eloped or had a small wedding— end up receiving, incidentally, generous cash gifts from parents who are happy they didn’t have to foot part of a $30,000 wedding bill. And most of these couples take this cash and use it wisely for down payments, new cars or investments. I think that’s a pretty good argument for eloping. The other big reason is to avoid stress. There’s a study showing that out of 500 engaged or newlymarried couples, 96 percent said wedding planning was stressful and 55 percent considered eloping or calling the whole thing off. The survey also mentions that 86 percent of respondents suffered, on average, more than three stress-induced symptoms including skin breakouts, hair loss, loss of sex drive, insomnia and headaches all from planning what is essentially a fancy event.” Clearly, Olsen isn’t just a proponent of eloping—she’s made herself an actual expert on the subject, having gone so far as to create a website and write a book on it. A lover of weddings who isn’t herself married, but happily ensconced in a relationship of 12 years, Olsen took her background in writing—having been a journalist for the Washingtonian for two years—and combined it with a passion for learning about all things wedding-related to create something she believes will be a resource for anyone looking to get married and not find themselves lost in the minutiae that so often overtakes the occasion. “Your Wedding, Your Way: Destination Elopements, Intimate Ceremonies, and Other Non-traditional Nuptials is an in-depth and one-of-a-kind resource for modern 86 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
couples,” she explains. “There are so many ways to get married that don't require an inflated budget, months of stressful planning and a bunch of hoopla that makes you wonder, ‘Why am I even having a wedding?’ I filled the book with practical advice and helpful how-tos on planning your big day your way, plus true stories from couples who did it themselves.”

In this way, the book mirrors her website, Art of Eloping, which is rife with information on vendors, destinations, checklists and even “Elope Diaries,” which are real-life accounts from couples who eloped for themselves, sharing details on their reasons for eloping, cost, reactions they got from their loved ones as well as photos taken along the way. In Olsen’s estimation, elopement has become popular because of social media. “Starting around 2016, Instagram photos of elopements really started cropping up,” she notes. “’Instagram envy’ is a very real thing— none more so than for wedding-related content—and seeing these gorgeous photos of couples in stunning gowns against a backdrop of a mountain range or the Mediterranean at sunset, and seeing just how happy they looked, created this aspirational snowball effect. Couples decided they didn’t want posed photos inside a church or ballroom—they wanted the carefree feeling they were seeing captured in photos on Instagram.” As advantageous as elopement can be, there are some cons to consider—the largest being family. “Family members can sometimes feel hurt, and for very understandable reasons,” Olsen admits. “For many, they have the belief that eloping is secretive and selfish. And historically it was secretive—back in the 1500s, couples eloped to escape arranged marriages. While couples today still elope in secret, it’s for very different reasons. There’s a bit of education that goes into how to break the news to loved ones that you’re not having a traditional wedding, which is a large theme in my book,” she goes on. “It’s important to explain to family members that eloping comes in many different forms these days.”

After creating a co-working space in Old Town that gave entrepreneurs and small business owners freedom and flexibility, ALX Community partners Kelly Grant, Scott Shaw, Trip Howell and Amanda Kate Galbraith knew the next step was to maximize the building even more by adding a restaurant and one-of-a-kind rooftop venue to their location. The result was Above ALX. Opened in September of 2021, Above ALX offers something unlike anything else in Old Town. “The rooftop itself is quite spacious at 6,000 square feet and can hold 275 people, making it ideal for larger events like weddings,” explains Grant, who acts as COO. “The highlight is the wraparound terrace, which offers 360-degree views of Alexandria, National Harbor, and DC. Inside, the design is more contemporary, with polished finishes and full-length windows. You get to enjoy being in Old Town from a setting that offers the little luxuries of a modern space, and we're conveniently located just two blocks from King Street and a 10-minute drive away
from Reagan National Airport—both of which are things people look for when choosing a venue, especially since most events will have out-of-town guests.” Above ALX has achieved something to fall in love with, and couples are doing just that. “We offer full, private use of the entire rooftop [for] special events, which makes the space incredibly appealing,” Grant says. “Many couples are now prioritizing having indoor and outdoor space at their weddings, which we have, and the rooftop is spacious enough to hold the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. Couples also like having the convenience of staying in one venue for their wedding and not having to rent a party bus and rush around to different spots throughout the day. Our rooftop also features a catering nook, plush yet contemporary furniture and patio furniture for use during the event. In addition, it's got state-ofthe-art AV equipment that can also livestream, which is now an option people look for, regardless of the event. Above ALX truly elevates the bar as a distinctive venue that brings an unmatched feel to Old Town and our staff is on-site to ensure the highest level of hospitality.”

Open since 1969 when Old Town was still a commercial port, the Warehouse is aptly named, as the former marine supply shop was once surrounded by warehouses and a handful of other businesses. Reimagined as a restaurant, the Warehouse was later sold in 1988 to Hossein Pishdad, whose industry experience included co-ownership of five other restaurants as well as time spent working in several restaurants in Alexandria and in the formal entertaining room at the State Department. In 2019, Pishdad partnered with Megan Hallett, the daughter of the original owners. As an event venue, the Warehouse offers something entirely unique. “The Warehouse combines tradition with modernity in an intimate, yet elegant setting,” says Hallett. “The building was built in 1868; and even though the inside was destroyed in a fire in 1984, the facade is original. The inside has been regularly updated to ensure a comfortable and sophisticated setting for our customers that respects our historic roots. Our food is also a mix of traditional dishes with New Orleans flare, updated with modern tastes in mind. We strive to provide the best service possible in a very personal environment. the robert fischman story W E L L D R E S S E D + H I G H LY D E C O R A T E D story by liesel schmidt
Looking at the beauty, grace, classic lines and femininity of Robert Fischman’s dress designs, it’s incredible to think of what the hands that so carefully sketched them have touched and what the eyes that envisioned them have seen. But much like the most seemingly simple piece can actually be a creation of the most complicated construction, Fischman’s unassuming presence belies the amazing life he has led and the legacy he has created. Making his entrance into the world on April 1, 1925, Fischman was born into a family whose roots in Del Ray can be traced so deeply that they seem almost an immemorial part of the community’s foundation. Civil War stories as well as tales of the Great Depression and Prohibition all color the family’s lore and Fischman grew up in a world that was only just regaining its footing after the Great War. When war once again swallowed the world, 17-year-old Fischman enlisted in the Navy with his father’s signature, patriotically answering Uncle Sam’s call to arms. Assigned to the battleship USS Texas, young Fischman found himself in the thick of battles on France’s beaches, including a rescue mission on D-Day at Omaha Beach. among his many medals, in 2017 (left) fischman was awarded the french legion of honor, established by napoleon bonaparte in 1802. It is the highest french order of merit, both military and civilian. MARCH 2022 • 93
“he rescued 35 men that day and only one of them was lost once they got back to the ship.”
Manning the captain’s gig, a small boat that Navy battleships had onboard at the time, Fischman left the ship under orders and made his way to the beach that was under heavy siege by Germans who had a high vantage point. “He had to push past all of the bodies floating in the water, thousands of bodies of dead and wounded soldiers, to pull out the wounded men and take them back to the emergency hospital on the ship,” says his wife of 74 years, Antoinette. “He rescued 35 men that day and only one of them was lost once they got back to the ship.” That day, 2,000 American troops were either killed, wounded or missing, but Fischman’s bravery and service throughout the war on the shores of France later earned him the honor of being decorated as a Chevalier (or knight) in the National Order of the 94 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
French Legion Medal of Honour. According to the French Embassy, American veterans who risked their lives during World War II and fought on French territory qualified for this distinction if they fought in one of the four main campaigns of the Liberation of France: Normandy, Provence, Ardennes or Northern France. He received the medal from French Ambassador Gérard Araud on May 7, 2019, at the French Embassy in Washington, DC. Fischman was a member of USS Texas’s crew for four years. When the war ended, he left the Navy to come back home to Alexandria. Starting life as a civilian, there was naturally a time of feeling unmoored, but Fischman took advantage of the GI Bill that gave him access to a grant for college or trade school. Having a natural affinity and talent for art, he enrolled at the National Art School in DC,

where he found that he excelled in sewing and dress design. Soon, his designs were submitted in a contest that would award the winner the opportunity to have their designs made and modeled on stage at the Capitol Theatre on F St in DC. Fischman’s talent won out. He and his wife, whom he married in 1948, watched the designs in his head come to life on the stage. Firmly standing as an accredited designer, Fischman established his own business on Dupont Circle called Rojet’s Designs, where he made clothes for dignitaries as well as Miss Washington, DC. Over the next 55 years, the award-winning dress designer opened and ran several more clothing and tailoring shops including Robert’s, Ltd. on the 600 block of Washington St in Alexandria with the original gaslight in front of the store authorized by the city council. His second store was in the Fairlington Shopping Center. Now retired, the 97-year-old lives at Watergate at Landmark with his wife, with his designs on display in the community and where he continues to tell stories of the life he has lived in the town that is so much a part of him.
