At the end of every intake, I ask clients what their goals for therapy are. Many of them give an answer indicative of their lifelong quest for happiness. I cannot count the number of times I have heard “to be happier” as a response to that question. If happiness is your ultimate goal, much like perfectionism, it is a goal that you will chase forever because it will always be just out of reach.
emotional states Happiness is an emotional state and by nature, emotional states are not permanent. We move through our emotions. They do not last forever. “Happiness” is also a broad, even bland descriptor of an emotional state. More granular emotional experiences that may fall under this umbrella could include joy, acceptance, love, respect or inspiration. When someone says they want to be happy, what do they really mean? And what is preventing that feeling? When we dig into the trenches of what happiness entails, many of us think of values. This is where the work begins! A happiness-driven life is fleeting and tumultuous, whereas a values-driven life is rewarding and bountiful. “We should care as much about well-doing as well-being. I want to live in a world that values purpose as much as pleasure, contribution as much as contentment and justice as much as joy. A happy life isn’t necessarily an honorable life.” - Dr. Adam Grant
what is YOUR value system?
feeling confused after the instant gratification wears off. "Was I acting within my value system?" We are more likely to experience longer-term happiness and contentment if the answer to that question is a resounding, "Yes!" Other follow-up questions may include, “Did I do my best?” or “What were my intentions here?” If the answer is no, how can we re-orient ourselves towards our value systems next time and how can we make amends to ourselves and others right now? When considering our value systems, it is helpful to be clear about what makes our lives meaningful. This can be different for everyone. Think of trying to map out values before getting started. It may be helpful to take a value assessment online to act as a starting point.
meet jasmine payne Jasmine is a Resident in Counseling at Healthy Minds Therapy and provides services at the Fredericksburg location. She is a two-time graduate of Longwood University, receiving her B.S. in Psychology along with an M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Throughout her graduate studies, Jasmine worked with teens and adults who belonged to various minority and multicultural populations. She also has familiarity with a wide spectrum of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, grief, moodiness, self-improvement, motivation, relationship issues and more.
Our value system is our own, personal moral code by which we navigate the world, our relationships and our lives. For example, if someone values timeliness, that person is probably early to most obligations and only late under rare extenuating circumstances. If someone values honesty, that person most likely experiences extreme discomfort or cognitive dissonance if and when they have to lie. Cognitive dissonance is a key indicator that we are acting outside our value systems. Now, there are times where we tiptoe that line and step outside of our value systems, but that doesn’t make us bad people or condemn us. It is, however, an opportunity for reflection and growth. Values can have hard and soft boundaries. As we age, we learn and expand our mentalities. We have the beautiful choice to adjust our value systems accordingly.
the human experience Pursuing a life based on value systems leaves room for human experiences. This includes happiness and joy, as well as anger, grief, disappointment and surprise. Actions based on happiness are not always aligned with our value system and when they aren’t, they often leave us OCTOBER 2021 • 13

JUNCTION BISTRO FINDING ZEN + CALM IN THE KITCHEN story by liesel schmidt
Having been formally trained at L'Acadamie de Cuisine and then getting her cooking chops in DC restaurants such as Marcels' by Robert Wiedmaier, Kyirisan and Sababa Uptown, Chef Shelby McCrone has some serious talent. When Junction Bakery & Bistro owner Noe Landini was looking for some new blood in the kitchen at his Del Ray location, he tapped McCrone for the position— first as Chef de Cuisine and then as Executive Chef. “I love the creativity of cooking,” says McCrone. “There is always something new to learn and experiment with, so it never gets boring in the kitchen.” Like many passionate chefs, McCrone got her start in restaurants at a relatively early age. “I have always worked in the restaurant industry,” she says. “I started at 15 working in a small family-owned deli where I fell in love with the environment that you get from your restaurant
family. When I was about 22, I decided to take my love of the industry and turn it into a career by going to culinary school. The rest is history.” Now, she brings her flair to the dishes at Junction—though some of her greatest creations are not actually on the menu. “My signature dish is a ‘crab cake’ made with lions mane mushrooms instead of crabs,” she says, noting that it can’t be ordered at the restaurant. “I developed it last year during quarantine and it just became my signature dish. I won a challenge on the Food Network with it, so it must be alright. As a vegetarian but also a Maryland girl, I had to find a way to get my crab cake fix without the crab, and lions mane mushrooms mimic the flavor and texture perfectly.” Her favorite Junction dish to cook is the brisket. “Even as a plant-based human, I find it very zen and calming,” says McCrone. “It's just such an art. You really have to get the feel for it and there is something about maintaining a fire that just puts me in a happy place.” Her other happy place is eating Oreos and ice cream. “I would eat ice cream for legitimately every meal if I could," she admits with a laugh.

Japanese-style gastro-pub, KaiZen Tavern, is a refreshing twist on what you’d expect in a sushi restaurant, offering rolls that show a flair for artistry and “street-friendly” snacks that prove that food too pretty to eat can still be absolutely delicious. Naturally, all that comes down to the talent at work in the kitchen. The hands that masterfully prepare these dishes belong to some pretty interesting people. As sous chef to chef/owner Melvin Urrutia, 26-year-old Aung Pyae Sone, or “Kelvin” as he’s called, is hungrily absorbing everything he learns from his head chef, someone he looks up to as a mentor and considers family. Originally from Myanmar, Kelvin came to the United States to pursue his education in California, majoring in Business Administration and Management.
Life took him to Pennsylvania, where he found himself immersed in the food industry. At the time, he was just trying to make a living as a hand to the sushi chef in a small sushi restaurant. As time went on, what started as a mere job became a career. Now part of the team at KaiZen, Kelvin found a place that he truly feels he can thrive. “I see cooking as an art, and it is about creation and learning while doing it—either it’s a good or a bad outcome,” he says. “As a chef, people tend to think we must know everything related to cooking, but in reality, it’s all about finding things out. It’s a privilege to train under Chef Melvin. He’s not only carrying great cooking skills on his shoulders but also his care for his employees, and that makes him different. Each and every one of our team impacts the menu. As the sous chef, I am here to make sure our chef’s creations stay alive at all times, whether he is in the restaurant or not. I see that our food is executed with consistency. I think without my friends and all the great people I have met in the industry, I wouldn’t be where I am at in my career. I can’t wait to meet more as I develop and grow my career in the future.”

a historic tour of
CATOCTIN CREEK DISTILLING CO. story by liesel schmidt
Since the Prohibition era ended, distilling has become an art form for small batchers who pursue the perfect flavor like the holy grail. There’s something to be said for having heritage, be it in the story of the distillers themselves, in the company or even in the buildings. For owners, Scott and Becky Harris of Catoctin Creek, the building where their distillery, shop and tasting room is located is filled with history. Originally called the “Case Building” for the Case family who owned it for more than four generations, the historic century-old building was originally built as a car dealership in 1921, back in the days of the Ford Model A and Rolls-Royce. In fact, the J. Lodge Motor Company 22 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
was housed there, becoming one of the earliest Buick dealerships in the region under the operation of Joseph Lodge and Raymond Case. Ownership later passed down through the Case family and the dealership was renamed Case Motor Company in 1957. In 1989, it became a furniture factory. Later incarnations included a furniture showroom, an archery range and Purcellville Pharmacy. It wasn’t until 2012 that the Harrises bought it. Catoctin Creek was already up and running by that point, but needed a bigger base of operations. “The building actually found us!” Scott jokes. “[It was] the mayor of Purcellville that introduced us to the building and let us know it was for sale.”
As a historic building, there were certain regulations they had to follow, but the Harrises appreciated its beauty and uniqueness and saw all the ways it could suit their needs. “The building is historic art moderne style with lots of exposed brick and huge glass storefront windows, allowing people on the sidewalk to watch distillery operations every single day,” Scott says. “We put quite a lot of money into the historic renovation including preserving old windows and doors, repairing brick and installing a solar array on the rooftop. Older parts of the building, like the basement, were filled in and are no longer used. Restoring the building was actually a daunting effort because the

building has several uses. First, the tasting room is like having a restaurant or bar, so that had to be fit for the purpose of having customers come in and having a nice experience and to be a pleasant place to sit and enjoy your beverages,” he goes on. “The main part of the building is a factory, so we had to have upgraded concrete floors, fire suppression systems, industrial electrical power, upgraded plumbing, steam piping, coolant piping and much, much more. In addition, because it was a historic building, utmost care had to be paid to preserving the historic character of this now 100-year-old building.”

As a family-owned business, Catoctin Creek is continuing a tradition in this historic building. Started in 2009 when Scott and Becky decided to quit their engineering jobs and start a distillery, Catoctin Creek is nothing if not a true passion project—and a history maker in itself, being the first family-owned distillery in Loudoun County since Prohibition. Now, their claim to fame is a rye whisky that is true to the traditional rye whisky that would have been consumed in Virginia in the 1800s. “We source the finest local grain, mash and ferment that grain ourselves, and then distill it in our copper pot stills,” Scott explains. “After this, we age [it] in barrels and proof it with Virginia spring-water.” What results is the taste of Virginia, with their Roundstone Rye 92 Proof Distiller's Edition having received 94 points from Wine Enthusiast magazine and ranking as the number three rye whiskey in the nation in their 2020 year-end roundup issue.

ABYSSINIA MARKET where dreams are brewed fresh daily story by liesel schmidt photography by jeff heeney
When Lily Damtew opened the doors to Abyssinia Market in 2016, she did not just open a coffee shop. She opened the doors to her dream. As a college student, Damtew worked in a coffee shop at Union Station in DC, during which time she fell in love with coffee. As passionately as she begged her father to open a coffee shop for her, Damtew had to defer the dream until her father passed away and left her an inheritance. Married with two boys by then, she took some time to get things up and running, but when she did, Damtew knew that she created something that would make him proud and keep his memories alive. Named Abyssinia for the ancient name of Ethiopia, the market specializes in Ethiopian coffee. “If you’re a serious coffee lover, you have to try us,” Damtew insists. “We also pack our coffee, called ‘Queen of Sheba,’ because she’s one of my heroes. We also work with one of the best
bakeries in the area and sell their French pastries as well as our own vegetarian Ethiopian food, and we do our breakfast sandwiches made-to-order. We also sell beer and wine from all over. What makes Abyssinia special is we do everything from love. Like I tell some of my friends, I’m not Starbucks, so I do not speak Starbucks—but I do know good coffee, and we make the best one.” As a Black, female, immigrant business owner, Damtew has overcome a great deal and she takes none of it for granted. “It’s an honor because a lot of people paid the price for me to get here, and I truly appreciate that. Every day, I get up and I give it my best. I work seven days a week and when I’m tired, I remind myself that this is my dream and I can do it,” she says. “I also know my boys are watching me, so I wanted to show them how to be strong and independent. If I can run a business and be a good mother, they can do anything.” After divorcing in 2019 and taking over the business by herself, Damtew continued to thrive even during the pandemic because of community support. “The love and respect I receive from people here every day is something I can’t even explain,” she says. “I really do believe I’m blessed to be in this community and I’m very grateful for it.”

Named La Fiamma or “the flame,” the restaurant at 6124 Franconia Road in Alexandria is more than just an Italian kitchen—it’s a gathering place full of heart, passion and tradition… not to mention a brick pizza oven that truly brings the fire. Opened in February 2021, La Fiamma Italian Kitchen was created with the concept of being a destination for high-quality traditional Italian comfort food made with a modern flair. Bringing to life the vision of husband-and-wife team Gonzalo and Melina Pardo, the restaurant is a new venture, but it has all the passion of a generations-old business. Gonzalo’s love and talent for cooking takes him to the kitchen, where he spends a great deal of time working on new dishes. Staff and regular customers even know their two kids, Luca and Mateo, who spend enough time there while their parents work. “We're family-friendly but can also be a romantic dining experience. all the difference and we have hands-on owners in the kitchen and in the front of the house,” says Melina. “We’re owned and operated by a local family and our mission is to differentiate ourselves from the corporate world by not only serving great food but by approaching our guests as friends, not as numbers.” “Part of what makes us so unique is the ambiance, the supervised kids’ room, our live cooking Sunday Brunch, the wood burning brick oven, our large bar and our homemade bread and pizza dough that is made daily in-house,” says Gonzalo. It’s that very thing, in fact, that gives them the old-world flavor. The recipes are made from scratch and use nothing premade. “We make our breads, doughs, sauces, some of our pastas and some of our desserts from scratch, so it all tastes fresh and amazing,” Melina says. Best-selling signature items include the gamberi scampi, calamari, their brick oven pizzas, rack of lamb, pasta pescatore and gnocchi alla vodka. Bun Papa is a gem shining bright in the unassuming, nondescript Belle View Shopping Center in Alexandria. A pop-up concept developed by the culinary team at Bread & Water Company bakery, Bun Papa makes mouth-watering burgers and sandwiches and has quickly become a popular spot in the DMV. Yet, it is not only about the delicious burgers and sandwiches. The talented chefs and bakers at Bread & Water Company also create jaw-dropping tower cakes, pastries, desserts and breads. Their efforts have been recognized by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington. The organization chose and honored Bread & Water Company in the Baking & Pastry: Sweet Relief Category. Bun Papa’s start has been so successful that it was a finalist for a RAMMY award for “Hottest New Sandwich Shop” in the DMV after only seven months in business. The foundation of a perfectly baked brioche bun and tiers of delicious fillings are the blueprint for many imaginative and artistic handheld meals, which Bun Papa has mastered. The story of how this passionate culinary group got started and have persevered in the face of industry challenges is nothing short of inspiring.
Markos Panas, raised in the DMV, started Bread & Water Company in 2010, first selling his products at farmers markets throughout the area. Baking was always close and dear to Markos’s heart. His father, John, owned several business and restaurants in our area, and supplied bread and other products to numerous restaurants and hotel establishments. Markos is instantly likable. His personality, energy and passion are infectious – and it is reflected in his team and food. His drive to develop new food concepts that keep attracting locals is to be admired. For example, his nothing-can-stop-me attitude fueled him to travel to France to procure an oven from a 200+ year-old familyowned business. He shipped that oven back to the United States and brought the company's lead engineer with him. Together, he and the engineer assembled the oven in its new home. That oven quickly became the heart and soul of the kitchen. Markos then ordered and self-installed a hydraulic lift – a solution for getting products from the basement to the ground floor. To save much-needed funds, he was determined to dig the hole and install the lift himself. This labor of love took three OCTOBER 2021 • 43
months and many busted jackhammers during a fairly cold winter season. In hindsight, he says, it would have been better to pay a professional to do it. But the hard work has paid off handsomely with customers flocking to Bread & Water Company and Bun Papa. Markos’s first hire at Bread & Water Company was Noelie Rickey, a Bellevue, Washington native who graduated top of her class in pastry and with honors from L’Academie de Cuisine. She recalls the time when they met to discuss the job opportunity. Walking in and seeing a construction zone with no end in sight, it was not easy for her to imagine a functioning business. Markos’s seemingly lofty promise to be ready a month later proved to be true and, alas, a store was born. Working with a bootstrap budget, Markos’s dad would frequent farmers markets and trade day-old bread with farmers for fresh vegetables, fruits, proteins and other items like flowers. He would bring these back, drop them on the back table and ask the staff to work their magic and fashion something delicious. The whole menu, or lack thereof, was conceptualized daily from whatever they had on hand – truly farm to table. Bun Papa was an offshoot of this idea. The trio of partners also includes Philadelphia-born and DMV area-raised Doug Abedje. Together, the three began brainstorming on how to generate extra revenue,

coming up with thirty concepts. One of these was a hot chicken sandwich, waffle fries, lemonade and banana pudding pop-up. The team implemented this first concept over three days in one week. It was so successful that they decided to do it again the following week and when folks kept coming, it was clear to them they had to extend the pop-up. Meanwhile, they were making brioche buns for their Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, constantly tweaking the recipe to produce the perfect bun. Markos asked his head baker to change up the recipe and provide them with samples the next day. Upon arriving the next morning, Markos was speechless. He saw several bakers' racks full of brioche buns that looked like perfection. They were the best buns he’d seen in his life. Feeling emotional and a bit melancholic thinking of all the iterations that led to that moment, he came out cradling one of the brioche buns and was about to show it to the staff when Noelie casually walked in and said, “Hey, aren’t you a proud bun papa.” Thus, the name stuck and a concept was created.
Leading the charge in the kitchen line is Chef Patrick Tanyag. Known as @dahangrychef on Instagram, Chef Patrick is one of the most dynamic and interesting chefs you will ever meet. Hailing from the DC area, he serves as corporate executive chef and culinary consultant for Bun Papa, Bread & Water Company and their new diner concept. He leads a team responsible for designing menus that include their delicious Roadhouse Burger, VIP Alexandria Magazine’s 2021 winner for Most Recommended Burger in the annual VIB (Very Important Burger) Awards. A graduate of the Art Institute of Washington, Chef Patrick spent a significant part of his childhood watching chefs Julia Child, Martin Yan, Thomas Keller (of the Michelin-starred the French Laundry), Grant Achatz and Wylie Dufresne. Another VIB Award winner was one of his many creations, the Fried Cauliflower Burger. This hearty piece of cauliflower is marinated in coconut milk and turmeric, dredged in Bun Papa’s fried chicken spice and dredge mix and deep fried to crispy, golden deliciousness. It is served on their homemade brioche bun with crispy onion straws and a choice of sauce (we recommend Noelie’s Ranch). In October 2019, a devastating fire severely damaged part of the Belle View Shopping Center where they are
located, damaging 10 businesses and forcing several to permanently close. The fire department would not authorize the business to reopen until they went through several processes. Bread & Water Company was shut down for three weeks. It was a tough situation to be closed for that long, but Markos had employees to take care of and a community to serve. A significant amount of food inventory had to be thrown out. Markos and his partners soon realized how expensive it would be to reopen, but they did it. Just a few months later, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to close. Markos said they were faced with losing about 50% of their business overnight when the farmers markets closed and about another 20% of their revenue when the wholesale business dried up. Beginning with a decision to close for 24 hours to regroup, the partners were also confronted with the reality of an Alexandria community depending on them. Many of their regulars were first responders and healthcare professionals working on the front lines. Markos and his team agreed to stay open. They retrofitted the entire floor to allow for more seamless operations, implemented social-distancing protocols during deliveries and created a curbside pick-up OCTOBER 2021 • 45
window. They also kept the entire staff employed throughout the year. More importantly, they began delivering real, legitimate food to hungry customers craving something special during the long days of at-home quarantine. The decision not to close built significant goodwill among staff, customers and vendors. The local community was happy to have a place where they could frequent and feel a sense of normalcy. Markos, Noelie and Doug have built a team with a unique set of traits, skills and talents that make them dynamic. The three are now partners in all ventures including Bread & Water Company’s two locations (in Alexandria and Arlington), Bun Papa, a soon-to-open spot at Capital One Arena and a diner concept in the Bradlee Shopping Center scheduled to open early next year. They are also considering offers from real estate developers and investors for other ventures which will offer customers in the area many more delicious options to consider. A lover of coffee and a self-proclaimed imbiber who requires 300 mg of caffeine, or three shots of espresso, to find his “sweet spot,” it wasn’t until 2018 that Moriarity actually made a career out of his beloved bean. “A friend of mine invited me to check out a small sample roaster he'd bought used on Ebay and suddenly it dawned on me... I knew so little about coffee, a beverage I drank every day,” Moriarity explains. “We spent the next months in his parents’ carport after our busy day jobs, learning the basics of coffee roasting and coffee chemistry. Nico [my friend] soon moved to Miami, where he started a coffee shop, and suddenly my phone started buzzing with coffee orders. I trained to become a barista, bought a roaster of my own, and began delivering fresh roasted beans to a few dozen folks. My phone has been ringing ever since.” Now the proud owner of Roastee Toastee Coffee, Moriarity is a purveyor of only the finest quality, locally
fresh-roasted beans. “The delicious proof is in the cup,” he explains. “It's also written right on the bags of beans. I name the coffee farm where the coffee is grown, I put the Q grade of the coffee on there too, along with the exact roast date. Consumers should be empowered to view coffee as more than just powder in a can. After all, they're seeds from coffee cherries and have a lot in common with fresh produce.” Moriarity’s expertise in coffee is now almost encyclopedic, a clear indication of his passion. “Did you know that coffee contains over 1,500 chemical compounds?” he marvels. “800 of these compounds are volatiles, aka flavors. It's a remarkably complex and delicious beverage with seemingly magical qualities. And it brings people together in such a wholesome way. Historically, coffee has played a pivotal role in so many cultural revolutions, from helping usher in the Renaissance, to pushing forward the Industrial Revolution. More recently, it has played an important role in the foodie revolution. It's such a universal ritual, a joyful reason to phone a friend and meet up.” Moriarity began working with Fontaine Caffe & Creperie in April of this year, bringing his beans to the experience. “We have such a talented team, from the servers and baristas to everyone in the kitchen,” he says. “It's a terrific group of folks.”

After spending nine years in financial planning, Gregg Linzey did something most of us only dream of doing: He quit his job and launched his own business. Created in 2018 as a pop-up concept, Chewish Deli is an authentic New York-style bagel shop that makes their bagels daily from scratch. Linzey is proud to go toe-totoe with naysayers who assume that a Massachusettsborn transplant to Alexandria wouldn’t know their way around a NY bagel, and he’s driven by a passion born of intensive research into the history of bagels. “As I learned the amazing ties that bagels have to the Jewish culture and what they have represented to the Jewish people, it really affected me. I bring that passion to Chewish Deli,” says Linzey. Having met success through his pop-up, Linzey invested in a food truck, something that provided him with a less capital-intensive option for getting his business off the ground. He also knew that, with there being no breakfastfocused food trucks in Alexandria, he would have little to no competition. Proving himself and his concept, Linzey was soon able to open a brick-and-mortar location on Pendleton Street, where Chewish Deli now welcomes streams of customers each day. “Hearing feedback from guests— specifically those who are from places like New York and
the northeast—that my bagels bring back some sort of memories is amazing. It’s something that really keeps me going and lets me know that I’m doing something right,” says the 35-year-old Red Sox fan. “It makes for great banter with my New York customers,” he says with a mischievous grin. As a business owner in Alexandria, Linzey saw prudence in joining the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. “I've been involved with different chambers of commerce in a couple different businesses,” he says. “The benefits of being active with a good chamber like ALX is great. Making connections in the community can help in so many ways. I've found customers, vendors and friends through the chamber, so it’s been an invaluable tool for my business.”

Although we experienced high summer temperatures in Alexandria and the greater DMV, the Northern Virginia housing market – which was hot, hot, hot for several years – seems to be returning to a more normal pace. Demand is still strong. Alexandria home sales for the summer months were up double-digit percentages from last year according to the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors. But the urgency to buy has dropped as potential buyers leave town for summer vacation, visit family and friends or choose to spend weekends doing something other than attending open houses. Others are taking a break from house-hunting due to fatigue from high prices and bidding wars. If we are not at the peak at this point, there’s talk that we might be soon. Current data shows an increase in the number of homes for sale, days spent on the market and price cuts, as well as a decline in mortgage applications. 60 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
What does all this mean if you’re a potential home buyer or seller? "If you’re planning to buy before the end of the year, make sure you’re fully prepared," says Shoshanna Tanner, local Realtor and Team Lead of Shoshanna and Co. of Compass. She suggests: 1. Get pre-approved: Being pre-approved for a mortgage loan with an accredited and reputable local lender will ensure a financial leg up on the competition. This will show sellers you are wellqualified for the financing and will put you in a more competitive position. 2. The Angel Wings Once again this year, the Angel Wings, which VIP Alexandria Magazine featured in a story in our November 2020 issue and have become a well-recognized symbol of the Walk to Bust Cancer, will be making their way all around the city of Alexandria during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The original wings, painted by Alexandria resident and breast cancer warrior, Mary Edwards, and her family, will be housed in Founder's Hall/South Block at 106 N. Lee Street during the month of October. Two large replicas will move around daily to local businesses, supporters, sponsors, restaurants, and more. THE MINDFUL JUNKIE
IMPLEMENTING MINDFULNESS FOR FIRST RESPONDERS story by martha carucci
Things get interesting when a petite woman sporting a mohawk and known as the "Mindful Junkie" walks into a room full of first responders with plans to teach them “Tactical Brain Training” and mindfulness. Alexandria resident, Gina Rollo White, has a Masters in Mindfulness Studies and is the founder and director of Mindful Junkie Outreach. A mind body teacher, educator and author of the thesis Mindfulness and Law Enforcement, An Effective Approach to Implementing Mindfulness for First Responders, she has spent over 15 years teaching mind body interventions. Gina has worked with leadership from law enforcement, fire services, paramedics, medical workers and special task forces, delivering curricula specifically tailored to those working in high-trauma environments. As the daughter of two first responders, Gina learned firsthand
how chronic stress impacts first responders and their families. As a child, she saw how the sacrifices her parents made for their communities not only took a toll on their physical and mental health, but also created strain at home and in the family. While in university years later, she learned about the connections between trauma, the brain and emotional regulation. Mindfulness, she learned, could help reverse the negative consequences of sleep deprivation, exposure to violence and physical injuries by changing the brain itself. The ability to positively change the brain through mindfulness is important for everyone, but Gina realized these skills are especially critical for one population in particular: individuals who put their lives on the line to ensure public safety. Gina created Mindful Junkie Outreach to empower first responders with mindfulness strategies to be healthier, safer and more emotionally regulated both on the job and at home. Gina travels around the country to speak, teach and provide workshops and training to first responders and medical personnel. After the COVID-19 pandemic shut so much down, Gina continued much of her work virtually via Zoom or other teleconferencing methods. OCTOBER 2021 • 69

“I go in and I’m met with such aversion and I walk out and I can’t leave without a line of people waiting to talk to me. And I listen. And they are thankful. I’m not fixing problems. Mindfulness is not about fixing problems. Mindfulness is about noticing what’s occurring while it’s occurring so you can understand how you can work with the situation at hand.” I have been fortunate enough to have worked with Gina over the past six years as she graciously led a mindfulness mediation to start the National Breast Center Foundation’s Walk to Bust Cancer. It’s an extremely powerful, humbling, unifying experience to look at a crowd of over 500 people standing together, holding hands and feeling the energy that brings together survivors, warriors, families, supporters and loved ones, all unified in a cause near and dear to their hearts. Gina has brought a comforting, grounding and moving aspect to the walk program. Walkers look forward to seeing her each year. “A lot of healing is done through relational work; knowing someone is listening to you, they see you, they hear you,” White commented. We spend a great deal of time nourishing our bodies, and as is evidenced by this issue, there are so many amazing places here in our area to do that. Annetta Catchings TEACHING YOUNG MEN TO SPEAK UP STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

When Annetta Catchings became a flight attendant for American Airlines in 1992, there was no such thing as the TSA, 9/11 never happened so the fear of terrorists wasn’t even a fleeting thought and female flight attendants were still called “stewardesses.” Clearly, a lot changed in those 29 years, but one thing that has not changed is the way Catchings approaches her job. She still treats her passengers with care, concern and respect even in times when they don’t make it easy. She used that same approach when she raised her two sons, Ahmad and Artis. “In my years of flying, I’ve learned to be patient with people and filter through their words that are often brought on by anger, disappointment or fear to hear the true message of what they are really saying and respond without judgement,” says the 51-year-old. “That is the challenge of any person who works with the public. I believe I bring that to the discussion when dealing with my boys. I teach them to speak up, so that requires me to listen without judging them as well.”
"Having come from a single-parent home and witnessing the drive and accomplishments of my own mother, I felt it was important to show my boys that same likeness of character in myself." Currently based in Washington, DC, Catchings has also been based in Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco throughout her career, which had a rocky take-off because of some unforeseen circumstances. “I became pregnant at 20 while a junior in college,” she says. “Needless to say, it was not planned and I was extremely disappointed that I had let myself and my family down by getting off track and allowing myself to become a statistic. I knew what was ahead for my son if I did not marry and provide him with a father figure and mentor. I wanted more for him. That is at the heart of every parent.
We want the best for our children. I wanted him to have the benefits that come with a traditional family and home environment. So after three years, God sent what I had asked for, and I was married for 25 years to USMC Lt. Col. Dennis J. Hart. Years later, we had a son of our own,” she goes on. “Marriage allowed me to work my base average so that I could be home, support his career and raise my sons while having a career. It also afforded me the opportunity to volunteer in the community where we were stationed at the time while remaining proactive in my kids’ activities and affairs.” As a married woman with children, Catchings saw the value in keeping her career instead of bowing to social norms at the time. “Balancing the roles of mother, wife and career woman helped fulfill my desire to help elevate the financial goals of our family,” she asserts. “Having come from a single-parent home and witnessing the drive and accomplishments of my own mother, I felt it was important to show my boys that same likeness of character in myself. I was very fortunate to have a fulltime job that provided benefits and income. However, it allowed me the flexibility to work as if I were a part-time employee,” she notes. “We always had a code that we would live on one income for our basic necessities. My income was secondary, so it was used for investments, vacations, savings, and other ‘extras.’ My sons had a healthy respect for that. They viewed me as their father’s OCTOBER 2021 • 79

Although our marriage did not succeed beyond the 25-year mark, I hope what it taught my sons was the importance of marrying someone who will partner with you in life—someone who will enrich you with what they bring to the table.”
With much time on her hands, no distractions and a heart and willingness to serve, Catchings is looking forward to bringing her patience, ability to work with people and lack of judgment to what shes hopes will be her my next career achievement.”
Now that her children are grown, Catchings is still driven to make them proud and set a good example. That has taken her life through some turns as well. “I’ve always been willing to recognize my fears and change what wasn't working in my life and that led me to make a hard decision to hit the reset button,” she says. “I have stumbled a bit to rebuild my life after my divorce in 2018, although I can say that the discipline and consistency I have shown over the course of my life made it easier to make the transition. That transition brought me to Alexandria, a place that I have always had a special attraction to. I am a new homeowner and I’m also running for Mayor of Alexandria."
As a mother, Catchings sees her sons as her greatest achievement and she hopes they are equally as proud of her. “When my sons think of me, I hope that they will say that their mom didn't judge too harshly who they are as men, and that I parented them to respectfully speak their mind, be independent, be open to what their fellow man and the world has to teach them, owe no man, and always seek God’s presence in their decision-making. I pray I have lived and do live as the example,” she says. “What I’ve learned from my son, Artis, is how to remain quiet when I have the urge to speak. He teaches me that sometimes saying nothing is better than saying the wrong thing or keeping unnecessary chatter going. It’s ironic that, whereas I teach him to speak more loudly, he teaches me speak less.”
About 3 years ago, when Catchings told her son that she was going to run for office he looked at her and said, “You’re crazy! How are you going to do that?” "It shocked me that he would say that given, between his father (who is a LtCol in the Marine Corps) and myself, I’m the parent he comes to when he needs to get something done. His dad is brilliant, a very smart guy, and very ambitious. I love being around people like that. But I know my strengths. I’m a physical person, a people person, service oriented. I like checking boxes, solving problems and getting it done." Catchings admits that part of her decision to run was born out of her desire to teach her son you can achieve anything you put your mind to. "I can see how proud he is of my running.
