FROM THE PUBLISHER Happy September, Alexandria! Welcome to our Annual Gentlemen's Issue! We are thrilled to introduce you to the 2021 class of Alexandria's Most Interesting Men. These gentlemen were nominated by members of the Alexandria community and then selected by a committee that consisted of the VIP staff and local leaders. Each of our Interesting Men not only has a unique and inspiring story to tell but loves and supports our community to the best of their ability. We opted to feature our Gentlemen in a way that also celebrates the Second Annual Old Town Festival of Speed & Style. VIP Alexandria Magazine is proud to be a Gold Sponsor of this wonderful event, which supports the organizations ALIVE! and USO Metro. And, of course, no Gentlemen's Issue would be complete without our annual VIB (Very Important Burger) Awards. The shutdowns of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be in the past, but our local eateries are still working hard to overcome the financial hardships they endured as a result. As you consider what restaurants to support over the coming weeks, we encourage you to try one of our favorite burger places! As always, thank you for your continued support and readership. We enjoy serving the community of Alexandria and are looking forward to continuing on our storytelling mission for years to come.

WELLNESS
The Impact of
COVID-19 on Men's Mental Health
Story by Andrada Florescu of Del Ray Psych
Mental health challenges like anxiety and depression dramatically increased in March 2020 with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and men have been some of the hardest hit. Studies show that men are at greater risk of morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 than women. There are likely many reasons for this trend, from potentially weaker immune systems to riskier choices surrounding alcohol and tobacco use. Beyond COVID-19 itself, the disease puts the spotlight on another issue disproportionately affecting men: mental health. The pandemic has led to a variety of mental health issues including increased stress, depression, and anxiety. There are increased reports of worry, changes in sleep, changes in diet, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, worsening of chronic health problems, and use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Overall, men and women display and cope with mood disorders differentially and the pandemic has further 12 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
exasperated these gender differences. Men tend to have fewer friendships than women and the friendships they do have tend to be activity-based. Men are also less likely to confide in and establish close social connections with other men. Researchers at Cleveland Clinic found that stress and isolation significantly increased among men during the pandemic and about 45 percent of the 1,000 men surveyed said their emotional and mental health declined during this difficult period. The data also showed that
“Men have more difficulties with addressing their mental health and that can impact their physical health in turn,” —Dr. Petar Bajic
this has been a more troubling period for adult males than past crises — with 59 percent saying COVID-19 had a greater negative impact on mental health than the 2008 economic recession. “Men have more difficulties with addressing their mental health and that can impact their physical health in turn,” said Dr. Petar Bajic, one of the doctors associated with the campaign at Cleveland Clinic Institute. He explained that this is in many ways a cultural and societal issue — many men view themselves as what he called “the primary breadwinner.” They feel that if their own health suffers, they won’t be able to fill that role in their family or community. Furthermore, many men tend to derive the base of their own self-esteem and sense of purpose from their careers and ability to provide financially for their families. Job loss and the economic problems that can come from it can be a major stressor for men who might have been the top earners in their households before the pandemic. To improve support for men facing mental health challenges, it is important to shine a light on the guilt and powerlessness that men may be experiencing. Reframing the narrative to emphasize that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness, may help more men ask for help when they need it. Telemedicine is also an accessible and less intimidating way to engage safely with a mental health provider during COVID-19. Men often report some discomfort and avoidance in fully disclosing details regarding their mental health when visiting their primary doctor, may shy away from seeking an in-person therapist and may be wary of entering a medical facility during the pandemic. A phone or virtual appointment from home is a less intimidating way to address mental health problems with a medical professional. To manage mental and physical health declines during this difficult time, men can start paying attention to a healthy diet, exercising, getting enough sleep, maintaining social ties with others, and prioritizing self-care. Spending time outdoors, developing hobbies, practicing meditation, and engaging in other wellness initiatives such as yoga can also be very helpful.

The Speed of Life LEARNING HOW TO SLOW DOWN IN A FAST-PACED WORLD STORY BY MARTHA CARUCCI
Stop for a second. Ask yourself this question: What speed are you operating at right now? Are you the kind of person who goes full speed 24/7? Or has it now somehow become 25/8? Do you take time to stop, breathe, and literally smell the roses? Many people have said that COVID forced them to slow down; to sit, spend time with family, stay in, and do things they might not otherwise do. But as things start reverting to normal with the world opening up again and gradually removing restrictions, some go right back to their old pace. Others find that their slower pace was something they wanted to carry on, and that those roses actually do smell great. To me, it often feels like the world pushes us to operate in overdrive instead of teaching us and reinforcing that life might pass us by if we move too
fast to enjoy it. We are surrounded by advertising and messages that show us that if we take a certain medication, we will be running in slow motion with giant smiles on our faces, holding hands with our children in fields of flowers; if we drink a certain beer, which is perfectly chilled with beaded drops of cool water dripping down the bottle, we will have more fun on boat rides jumping off docks with beautiful looking friends, seemingly without a care in the world. We are pushed to have more; bigger, better, or faster; houses, cars, boats, motorcycles, or second homes; better bodies, stronger bodies, or thinner bodies. And it's not just about having more, but also doing more; to hold multiple volunteer positions, to out-do the other parents at the school bake sale, to be the coach or team parent of your kid’s sports team, to start a book club, to entertain more often. We are to wear THE GENTLEMEN'S ISSUE • 17
"But what if less is more?" our exhaustion as a badge of honor or a bragging right. This applies not just to adults, but to kids too. If your kid isn’t fluent in mandarin, an expert fencer, classical cellist, and captain of several teams by age nine, some parents may feel a sense of failure. Do we have to line up a food truck that serves Sri Lankan cuisine and hire a mariachi band to celebrate when our kid successfully gets a pencil to stand up in Play-Doh? Thanks to our smart phones and laptops giving us unfettered access to Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat, Pinterest, and the next big thing, we can compare ourselves to others and be made to feel inferior any time, day or night. That is, if you have any free time to slow down. But what if less is more? What if that night that we laughed until our stomachs hurt playing board games when we stayed in with our family was more? What about the benefits of meditation and deep breathing? What about taking time for ourselves and s-l-o-w-i-n-g down?
Q: What is your speed of life? “I am a very high-energy person. I don’t know slow speed. I give 110% and I have no one else to blame when things don’t get done. It’s what I expect of myself so sometimes I work harder and faster than necessary. I never want to overpromise and underdeliver. But when I crash, I crash hard.” Q: Has COVID slowed you down at all? “During COVID, I had to learn how to adapt to my family’s 'new normal,' which was much slower. I thoroughly enjoyed the ‘borrowed time’ with my college-aged girls. I learned time with them is more important than work.”
JENNY CLOSE AND MELISSA LYONS Consultants
We asked a few Alexandria residents to take a minute to look at their “speed of life” and share their thoughts with us.
KELLY DEMASO

Q: What is your speed of life? Jenny and Melissa: “Warp speed. Always.” Q: Did COVID slow you down? Jenny: “Offices shut down from COVID and then I had a baby. I take time for walks in nature and fitness.” Melissa: “COVID made the world smaller, which is a good thing. I had less travel for work, but I also was home schooling. I have a massage once a month and focused on my fitness again.” It might be worthwhile to look at your speed of life. 18 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

Muscle UP! 7 Tips for Maximizing Muscle Recovery Brought to you by Your CBD Store Alexandria
We’ve all been there: You did a killer workout that you feel like you could die from, but you’re sooo proud of yourself for hanging in there. Now that you’ve peeled yourself up off the floor, you’re going to have to think about muscle recovery. We’ve got a helpful list of things you can do to make you feel human again.
Hydrate
Water is uber-important to your body’s functions—and that includes your muscles’ ability to repair themselves. When you’re dehydrated, muscles can’t do what they’re designed to do and take longer to get back to full strength. Drink 16 to 24 ounces of fluid for every pound lost during your sweat session.
Water Therapy
Try a contrast bath, which uses submersion in very warm water and then alternating with submersion in very cold water to stimulate the contraction and dilation of blood vessels, which changes your heart rate. It also helps reduce muscle soreness after a workout. To take things up a notch, add a CBD bath bomb to your warm bath. The CBD will enter your skin and soothe your tight muscles.
Massage
Massage has been proven to improve flexibility and decrease delayed muscle soreness after intense exercise. It's also a great excuse to call Sven.
Avoid Alcohol
Your nightly glass of wine might help you relax, but consuming alcohol after intense, prolonged exercise actually impairs your muscles’ ability to replenish glycogen as well as their ability to create protein stores.
Sleep
Sleeping allows your muscles to recover from exercise. People who exercise intensely need even more rest. Don’t get much sleep? You’re getting in the way of muscle recovery by impairing your body’s inflammation reaction as well as its production of hormones that support the growth of muscle.
Compression Therapy
Wearing compression garments (socks, sleeves, etc.) during exercise can speed muscle recovery time postworkout. They’ve become extremely popular with athletes for this reason.
Motion | CBD
The cannabinoid-rich extract in this roll-on product penetrates the skin to reach deep into your muscle tissue and relieve tension. The easy-to-use applicator contains 200mg 4% Lidocaine. Rub some in after a workout to help relieve tightness. It's also great for onthe-go topical application. Your CBD Store Alexandria • 301 S. The hamburger is arguably one of the most beloved and iconic of American foods. The once-humble hamburger continues going through multiple makeovers thanks to chefs cooking up ways to improve upon this American classic. Whether you prefer more luxurious toppings such as truffle aioli and blue cheese or enjoy a more traditional burger with ketchup and mustard, get ready to find burgers worth savoring. From smashed patties to towering toppings, here are our picks for the top burgers in Alexandria, Virginia. The 2021 VIB (Very Important Burger) Award winners are:
COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED FRIED CAULIFLOWER BURGER, BUN PAPA This hearty piece of cauliflower is marinated in coconut milk and turmeric, dredged in Bun Papa’s fried chicken spice and dredge mix, and deep-fried to crispy, golden deliciousness. It is served on their homemade brioche bun with crispy onion straws and your choice of sauce (we recommend Noelie’s Ranch).
BRINGING OUT THE INNER CHILD ANCHOR BURGER, FISH MARKET Most people would understandably skip the burger options at a seafood place. Missing this burger at Fish Market would be a huge mistake. Two patties are made from a custom blend specifically designed for the restaurant. This mouth-watering, perfectly seasoned burger is topped with fresh shredded lettuce, chopped onion, special sauce, American cheese, and pickles. The burger at Junction Bakery and Bistro, Fish Market’s sister restaurant in Del Ray, is just as good.
LOSE THE BUN FLAPPY JACK, CHADWICK’S If you are going to lose the burger bun, why not replace it with pancakes? This burger includes Black Angus beef, cheddar, bacon, and a fried egg, and is served in between two buttermilk pancakes. Warm maple syrup and crispy home fries finish this popular dish at Chadwick’s.

BUY ME BRUNCH BEASTLY SMASH DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER, HUMMINGBIRD Start off your brunch with this tasty burger. Two Angus beef burger patties are joined with come-back sauce, lettuce, tomato, house-made pickles, American cheese, bacon, bacon jam, fried egg, and avocado. If you can’t make it for brunch, the restaurant has Burger & Bottle Night every Wednesday – featuring their Smash Burger and half off wine bottles.
SO MANY OPTIONS VARIOUS BURGERS, HOLY COW At Holy Cow, this Del Ray restaurant offers almost 20 different options in their diverse menu of signature burgers and other sandwiches. Our favorites include the Popper (Angus beef topped with cream cheese, bacon, fried jalapeños, chipotle ketchup, and garlic aioli on a brioche bun) and the Hangover (a strong contender for the best brunch burger, topped with a crispy hash brown patty, bacon, hot sauce aioli, and a fried egg).
WHERE'S THE BEEF? LAMB BURGER, DANIEL O’CONNELL’S A historic Old Town building with beautiful Irish antiques is where you will find this burger favored by many locals. A juicy, ground lamb patty is topped with herbwhipped goat cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles. It’s a great option if you want to indulge in a burger made from meat other than beef.
SIMPLICITY DONE RIGHT VIRTUE BURGER, VIRTUE FEED & GRAIN There is nothing like a simple burger cooked and prepared to perfection. This eight-ounce patty comes with a choice of cheddar or Swiss cheese, applewoodsmoked bacon, fresh lettuce, and tomato on a brioche bun. If you want a traditional burger with elevated flavors, the Virtue Burger hits the mark. THE GENTLEMEN'S ISSUE • 27
VEG OUT PVB, THE PEOPLE'S DRUG There’s been a frenzy and huge surge in demand for plant-based protein that can be fashioned into burgers. This burger’s flavors might transform any carnivore. The Impossible Meat patty has great flavor and texture. The burger is topped with bread and butter pickles, arugula, sriracha aioli, and is served on a toasted olive oil bun. We couldn’t be more pleasantly surprised with the taste.
MOST RECOMMENDED ROADHOUSE BURGER, BUN PAPA Markos Panas, owner of Bun Papa and Bread & Water Company, is extremely passionate about his buns – that is hamburger buns. The proof is in the taste. These buns are light, airy, and delicious. They are the vessel for two three-ounce patties made with their proprietary beef blend, cheddar cheese, house-made BBQ sauce, bacon, and topped with crispy onion straws. This burger is absolute perfection. Their Big Papa Deluxe, a riff on a popular fast-food restaurant with golden arches, is a very close second. Delish!
KIDS' CHOICE HAUTE BURGER, HAUTE DOGS AND FRIES Although customers might consider this a hot dog-centric locale, the restaurant provides several burger options – including beef, lamb, and veggie burgers. Kids of all ages are opting for the Haute Burger. Three patties made from locally-sourced, grass-fed, dry-aged rib eye ground beef are smashed and cooked to perfection, and topped with gooey cheese, lettuce, tomato, and red onions.
PUBLISHER'S CHOICE UMAMI BURGER, VIRTUE FEED & GRAIN The Japanese describe umami as “essence of deliciousness.” This burger is that and more – probably one of the best we’ve had the pleasure of eating. An eight-ounce patty made from Black Angus beef is topped with smoked blue cheese, earthy wild mushrooms, and garlic truffle aioli, and served on a toasted brioche bun. 28 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

While the adage is true, litigation is not only expensive, but also time consuming and emotionally draining. In a recent study done by the National Center for State Courts, it takes a contract case an average of 367 hours to go through trial. For an employment law matter, that number is pretty close – 374. According to the same study, it takes an average of 220 hours to settle the matter just before trial. All of that is billable time and this does not include court costs, deposition fees, expert witness fees, etc. Those other fees can add up. For instance, if your lawyer bills you at $300 an hour, you will likely be out over $100,000 for all litigation costs. This is why avoiding litigation should be a priority for your business! Unfortunately, many businesses will run into problems requiring legal intervention at some point. When this
happens, the key is to keep those legal costs as low as possible and to resolve the matter quickly. That’s where arbitration can be helpful. There are several different routes to get to arbitration (rather than litigation). In my limited space here, I will consider only one – the arbitration provision in written contracts. During normal operations of your business, you will likely execute many contracts – a commercial lease, purchase agreement, supplier’s agreement, employee agreements, non-disclosure agreements, noncompete agreements, and more. An integral part of any written contract is what to do if someone defaults on or breaches the contract. This may include a mandatory binding arbitration agreement, which effectively keeps the matter out of court. How does this benefit you, the non-breaching party? As you saw above, the costs to enforce a contract in court can be very high – THE GENTLEMEN'S ISSUE • 31
It is important to understand the difference between arbitration and mediation. reaching $100,000 in many cases. This high cost will give anyone pause before they commence litigation in Virginia state court. If the amount in controversy is relatively low, let’s say $30,000, it is likely the nonbreaching party will be forced to settle for an amount considerably less than what is entitled. However, if there is an arbitration agreement in place, the costs are significantly less and the matter can be resolved much sooner. I recently scheduled a three-day jury trial for the summer of 2023. No typo – 2023. Conversely, my arbitration cases will be heard before the end of 2021. There are costs in arbitration that do not arise in litigation. The arbitrator will be paid roughly $350400 per hour and there are filing fees if the parties use a nationally-recognized body like the American Arbitration Association (AAA) to administer the matter. However, it is not mandatory to use the AAA. A local arbitrator (in many cases, a retired judge) can handle the matter just fine without higher level administration. This will eliminate the admin fees and will likely get the matter resolved sooner. It is important to understand the difference between arbitration and mediation. In mediation, the parties get together with their attorneys and a trained mediator and they try to come to an agreeable resolution. There is no trial, no hearing, and no decision other than the ones made by the parties. Mediations are generally voluntary. If arbitration is specified in the contract, it is not voluntary and neither party should waste time and money filing a lawsuit. Once the parties have agreed on an arbitrator, a hearing will be scheduled that will have several earmarks of a trial but it will be conducted in a lawyer’s conference room rather than a court. The arbitrator will hear evidence presented from both the plaintiff and the defendant and decide the case. If the contract calls for “binding arbitration” then that decision will be binding. That decision may then be filed in a local court and the usual procedures for executing on the judgment will apply. Let's say you won at the arbitration and were awarded the full amount of your contract damages. What about attorney’s fees? By now, you will likely have accrued
around $10,000 in fees. Can you recover those? Maybe. Virginia adheres to the American rule of legal fees, which holds that the prevailing party in a dispute may only recover if there is a provision in the contract allowing for the recovery of attorney’s fees or if there is a statutory provision permitting recovery. Many statutes do permit recovery of attorney’s fees, far too many for this brief treatment of a complicated matter. But rather than rely on them, it might be better for you to include in your contracts the provision that in any dispute between the parties, the prevailing party would be entitled to recover reasonable attorney’s fees and costs. Now it is up to the arbitrator to decide what “reasonable” is. Good luck with that. In summary, arbitration is an excellent tool to use to reduce legal expenses in a business dispute. The number of hours expended by the attorney will be considerably lower and the time to get before a neutral party will be measured in months, not years. When I get a call from an aggrieved party, my first three questions are (1) is there a written contract? (2) is there a provision for the recovery of attorney’s fees? (3) is there an arbitration provision? It is only after I have answers to these three questions that I can properly advise a prospective client on the path forward. Best wishes on the success of your business!

ARTIST/CO-FOUNDER/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, ERICKSON & RIPPER/DELRAY PICTURE FRAMING
Known for his portraiture and landscapes, artist Don Ripper is an artist to his soul, a risk-taker who loves to explore and learn and create. “I refuse to settle for mediocrity. In art, as in life, I have a dogged determination to achieve the outcome that I know is possible,” he says. “And if it doesn’t work, I start over.” A former rock drummer who toured with a band that was on the cusp of success, Ripper’s shift in focus has suited him— though he does toy with the idea of retiring as a jazz drummer. Whatever path he chooses, however, it will play to his strengths of creativity and expression. “I notice what other people miss and exploit it, find what is overlooked and reveal its inner meaning,” says Ripper, 52. “I thoroughly enjoy helping other people see, and that’s something I do with my art.” When not working, Ripper is “a nerd that enjoys tequila and going down the rabbit hole of YouTube looking for interesting technology that I can use in my next art project.”

As someone who works for the Executive Office of the President, Havin Baucom has to be welldressed at all times. But as buttoned up as he is for his day job, there are many more facets to the 34 year-old. When he’s not at the White House, Baucom focuses on his side-hustle: running the eponymous wardrobe consulting company he created, H. Baucom. “Some of my passions are styling men of all ages in formal attire and motivating and influencing our young men of this generation through my volunteer work and mentoring,” says Baucom, who was recently married. “One of my biggest strengths is motivating people and encouraging them to be the best version of themselves to achieve their goals.” But wait, there’s more—Baucom has been an avid roller skater since childhood and was even in the 2005 movie Roll Bounce, featuring Bow Wow, Nick Cannon, and Mike Epps. He’s also a serious cyclist and a member of the Good Fellas Cycling Club, riding anywhere between 20 and 100 miles in one ride. “I picked up cycling as a hobby during the pandemic, and it is now one of my greatest hobbies,” he says. LOCAL ARTIST
Take a short walk down King Street with Michael Fitzpatrick and you'll be surprised how many people he knows as he passes by. Fitzpatrick, known to most of his friends as “Fitz,” has an uncanny ability to connect with people and retain information about them, making him both memorable and extremely likable in the community. Although he only recently moved back to the area last August, you’d think he never left Alexandria, where he spent a good part of his childhood. Covered in construction dust one year ago, Fitzpatrick decided to retire his tool belt and broom for an easel and a paintbrush. “My mother was an artist and potter with a small studio space at the Torpedo Factory. So here I am, back in Old Town, pursuing my life-long dream. I am now a full-time freelance artist, with a studio just a few blocks from where I watched my mother paint so many years ago. It’s funny how life has come full-circle.” Fitzpatrick’s artwork is mostly acrylic and mixed media and includes Archangel and wine splash collections. His work is in great demand and will be seen in more locations in Alexandria soon.

GENERAL MANAGER JACK TAYLOR'S TOYOTA ALEXANDRIA
The General Manager of Alexandria Toyota, John Taylor, has been in the dealership industry since his teens, becoming part of the family business that really seems to be in his blood. It stands to reason, then, that loyalty is one of his personal strengths—loyalty to family, to friends, and to his company. A native Alexandrian, Taylor attended Christopher Newport and then lived in Greenville, North Carolina for a few years before moving back to his hometown. In his youth, Taylor was
an avid skateboarder. And though he may no longer be able to pop an Ollie or a kickflip, he’s still an adventurous soul—something that comes out when he’s doing what he loves best: saltwater fishing. “I love both off-shore and in-shore fishing, and I spend a lot of time on the water and on boats,” says 32-yearold Taylor, who once had a 700-pound marlin on his line—though he wasn’t able to reel it in. Favorite fishing spots include the Chesapeake Bay; Florida; and Ocean City, Maryland. He also loves just spending time along the Alexandria waterfront. “I love what the city has done with the waterfront—all the businesses and restaurants that have come over the past few years. It’s amazing to see.” Taylor is also active in several non-profits including the Scholarship Funds of Alexandria, Friends of Guest House, and Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue.

FALL FASHION 411
A Q+A WITH CELESTE CRUTCHFIELD story by liesel schmidt
54 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
As the owner of Kiskadee in Del Ray, Celeste Crutchfield has her finger on the pulse of fashion. The little boutique is nothing if not stylish—from the yellow siding and black-and-white French-style awning across the façade to the merchandising inside. Boasting labels from original designers and everything you could need for any occasion, Kiskadee is a destination for the fashion-obsessed as well as anyone who just wants to look absolutely fabulous. With price points for every budget, the boutique is a great place to shop for essentials as well as gifts for family and friends, offering personalized service from a friendly staff that truly knows their stuff. With fall around the corner, we’ve got some wardrobe changes coming up; and we can’t wait to see what’s on-trend for fall 2021. Naturally, we asked our go-to gal, Celeste, what Alexandria’s most fashion-forward will need for the upcoming season. Plus, since we love getting to know people, we asked her about more than just fashion.
VIP Alexandria: How long have you owned Kiskadee?
Celeste Crutchfield: I bought Kiskadee from the first owners in April of 2017. They opened Kiskadee in November of 2007.
VIP: Kiskadee is such an unusual word. What's the story behind the name?
CC: The founders of Kiskadee love the tropics—and I do too, which made it perfect. The Kiskadee is a cute tropical bird from Brazil.
VIP: How did you become interested in fashion?
CC: I've loved fashion for years and always wanted to own a boutique. When I was in the military, I loved to put together cute outfits for my off-duty time since I had to wear a uniform to work. Then, while I was a stay-at-home mom, I enrolled in Parson's School of Design. They have an online fashion business certificate that really got me interested in business ownership. "PUFFED SLEEVES ARE HERE TO STAY." VIP: What can we expect to see this year in fall fashion?
CC: Lots of interesting colors from bright fuchsia to deep blues. Puffed sleeves are here to stay, along with animal prints.
VIP: What pieces should every woman have in their closet for fall?
CC: My mainstay every fall is the perfect denim, chunky sweaters, and booties.
VIP: Are there any pieces that can go from summer into fall or fall into winter?
CC: Dresses! Depending on the dress, you can transition something from summer to fall by adding a cardigan and leggings.
VIP: What season is your favorite, fashion-wise, and why? CC: Fall! I love the deep colors, boots, and sweaters.
Kiskadee is located at 2205 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301. For more information, call 703.549.0813 or visit www.alexandriastylebook.com. 56 •• VIP VIP ALEXANDRIA ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE MAGAZINE 56
VIP: What are your hobbies when you're not at the store?
CC: I try to relax, whatever that entails in the moment. I love walking with friends or reading on the front porch. In the winter, I love doing needlepoint by the fire.
VIP: What is in your Netflix queue right now? CC: Sex/Life. Whoa... it's nuts!
VIP: What's the last book that you read? CC: Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens.
VIP: If you could have one superpower, what would it be, and why? CC: Invisibility. I'd love to be able to sneak around!
VIP: What would you say is your guilty pleasure?

Cars, like fashion, are celebrated for their design, their elegance, and their style. Their sleek lines, their performance, and their speed are all things that make people take notice, making them the object of envy and desire. Much the same way, fashion turns heads and incites passion all over the world. Created in 2019, the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style, presented by Burke & Herbert Bank, has brought the two together, celebrating the beauty and form of each in a way that also celebrates the elegance and style of Old Town. “We wanted to create a unique non-profit event that commemorates the speed, performance, and elegance of exotic cars paired with the style and fashion of London, Paris, Milan and New York, all while highlighting the heart and spirit of the community of Old Town,” says Rick Myllenbeck, founder and chairman of the event. “At the same time, we want to host a highly unusual and compelling event in Alexandria to increase business for shop owners, raise money for charity, and elevate the stature of the city on the global map. In doing this, we are bringing 60 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
together exquisite cars and car enthusiasts, fashion, art, music, and style to create a oneday festival of good energy and fun as well as generating widespread interest and visibility for Alexandria, drawing crowds to its restaurants and shops, and appealing to new visitors.” Taking place Sunday, September 5, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the 200 to 400 blocks of King Street and the 100 blocks of North Royal and North Fairfax Streets, the event requires a great deal of planning and logistics to pull off. “The organizing committee of The Old Town Festival of Speed & Style has been meeting on a weekly basis for over four years, first to create the festival and then to orchestrate it,” Myllenbeck explains. “This required creating a detailed plan, recruiting volunteers who are car people and who love the community, and meeting with a lot of city and business leaders to share our vision and have them understand our intent. We have also met with Alexandria’s Special Events Committee on numerous occasions to gain their approval, in addition to meeting with many organizations in the area to seek sponsorship money so that we

can pay for the expense of hosting such an event. We also sought to form relationships with city organizations such as Visit Alexandria so that we could get on their events calendar and leverage their social media connections.” Clearly, the organizing committee is deeply committed to seeing the event come to fruition, and Myllenbeck is highly appreciative of their work. “They are a remarkable group comprised of exceptionally talented individuals,” he says. “We have business leaders, successful entrepreneurs, communications specialists, a world-class artist, and people who love cars who are also exceptionally organized and motivated. Remarkably, the organizing committee has stayed together—despite the event being cancelled three times due to COVID—and continues to be focused on delivering another spectacular event that ultimately benefits the local community. It has been a true blessing that the team stuck together through one of the most devastating experiences in our lifetimes and never wavered in their commitment to do something incredibly special, like producing The Old Town Festival of Speed & Style.” As one would expect, the event promises to be spectacular.
"We are a Festival that brings together high-performance vehicles from the golden age of motoring to share with the public, while also celebrating their stunningly elegant designs that make them essentially art on wheels." - rick myllenbeck, festival founder 62 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
Featuring nearly 100 rare and exotic supercars and motorcycles from around the world as well as dazzling array of glamorous fashion elements and events, the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style is far from just another car show. “We are a Festival that brings together high-performance vehicles from the golden age of motoring to share with the public, while also celebrating their stunningly elegant designs that make them essentially art on wheels,” says Myllenbeck. “To underscore the style and elegance of the cars, the festival will also feature a fashion demonstration at the intersection of King Street and Fairfax Street in which male and female models who will be dressed, tailored, and groomed to a very high standard and paired with six exotic cars.” It is their focus on style, elegance, and fashion, in fact, that differentiates the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style from any other car event on the East Coast. “We depict the class, lineage, and attitude which represents Old Town Alexandria and the fashions that permeate
our gorgeous waterfront city,” says member of the Style Element Committee Chelsea Frank. “We aim to express the greatest fashions from local and international shops represented alongside King Street as well as some unique pieces that we Alexandrians have in our closets just waiting to be showcased. look ready for the runway. From national franchises to our cherished quaint boutiques, we pair Old Town's upcoming trends with unique automobiles and our local beautiful talent.” Adding even more dazzle to the festival is a replica of First Lady Jackie O’s iconic wedding gown, which will be on display during the event. “This wedding dress always makes the list of the most top 10 iconic gowns, and it has always been a huge hit whenever it’s displayed,” says the gown’s owner, Monte Durham, of Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta fame and owner of Salon Monte. “What makes it so stunning are the details and volume—there are 50 yards of Italian silk taffeta in the skirt alone.” Made by Ann Lowe, a Black American designer from Clayton, Alabama, this spectacular gown will soon be going on loan to the First Ladies National Historic Site. Setting the stage for this memorable event will be a brief operatic performance as well as spectacular art from local artist Tom Kuester. “As a designer that illustrates his own work, I’m used to having my designs and illustrations displayed in front of clients and in the media,” he says. “Unfortunately, designers—myself included—have moved toward faster digital renderings that have very little individuality; so providing the Speed & Style Festival with artwork gave me an opportunity to again draw by hand, something I hadn’t done in more than twenty years. 64 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
Taking place the night before the festival kicks off, the King Street High-Octane Ball reinforces the style element even further. “Alexandria has been looking for a reason to get dressed up for quite some time, and the High-Octane Ball delivers on that desire,” says Elizabeth Myllenbeck, Style Element Co-Chair. “With a dress code of black tie; fun formal; formalwear from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s; or racing-themed attire, we expect all attendees to have a blast. They will enjoy cuisine provided by local restaurants; sample top wines, beers, ciders and seltzers; take part in a live auction and enjoy the live music. And— of course—the venue. The ALX Community building right next to the Torpedo Factory provides an expansive view of the Potomac, which also underscores the Style theme."
“We were very intentional when we named our hyperlocal coworking spaces ALX Community,” says ALX Community owner Kelly Grant. “Our dedication to being more than a workspace shines through again in our sponsorship of many locally loved non-profits like Speed & Style that donate proceeds after expenses to local organizations.” Also scheduled the night before the festival is a VIP reception at Principal Gallery. “We’re incredibly honored to be hosting a welcome VIP reception for the sponsors and volunteers to thank them for their support in making this 2021 Speed & Style event possible,” says owner Michel Marceau. “It is a fun, lively and unique family-based event that really promotes a great sense of community. I love the energy this festival brings to our downtown streets!” A 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation chartered to donate funds to both local and national charitable organizations, the 2021 Old Town Festival of Speed & Style, presented by Burke & Herbert Bank, will donate proceeds to ALIVE!—the largest private organization addressing the needs of Alexandria’s less fortunate— and the USO of Metro Washington, D.C. and Baltimore,
which is the largest chapter chartered by the USO. “We are very thankful to everyone involved with the Speed & Style Festival,” says Lisa Marie Riggins, Executive Director of the USO’s National Capital District. “We will use the proceeds for programs and facilities that support military families from enlistment through the last day a service member laces up their boots.” As the largest sponsor of this free, community-wide event, Burke & Herbert Bank is proud of the ways that the festival highlights the community and benefits organizations that so greatly serve local needs. “Our sponsorship of the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style is a great way for us to support our local community and assist neighbors in need,” says David P. Boyle, President and CEO. “By bringing thousands of car and fashion enthusiasts to Old Town, the festival will fuel business for local restaurants, boutiques, and merchants, helping to ensure the ongoing vitality of our hometown. Plus, proceeds from the festival will go to two local non-profits—ALIVE! and USO Metro Washington-Baltimore—to help them in their great work. I see this as a win-win.” From the beautiful fashions walking the streets and runways to the stunning cars on display, the Old Town Festival of Speed & Style is sure to make your heart beat just a little bit faster—and make you fall in love with Alexandria even more.
