VOLUME ONE | ISSUE ONE Wow! The inaugural issue! [Insert deep breath here.] I want to begin with a huge THANK YOU to the community for the overwhelming support we have received since announcing the launch of VIP Alexandria Magazine just a few short weeks ago. As we hit the pavement in Old Town to spread the word and share our mission with those around us, we quickly realized that this publication would not only be welcomed with open arms, but had the ability to become a cornerstone for our community. Our community. It’s a phrase that overwhelms me with emotions I’m still trying to understand. Over the better part of a decade, I have had the opportunity to live in various cities across the country. But it wasn’t until I arrived in Alexandria that I finally felt “at home.” The first time I saw Old Town, I remember stopping dead in my tracks in the middle of the cobblestones on Prince Street and thinking to myself, “I can’t believe this is where I live.” Four years later, my family is thriving and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much.
PUBLISHER Kellie Gunderman EDITOR Anne Charboneau CREATIVE DIRECTOR Regine Orme DIRECTOR OF SALES Lisa Delnegro
My story aside: Alexandria is a city bursting at the seams with energy and life, so it made sense to use this publication not only to tell the stories of those who live, work, and play here, but to feature the events that make Alexandria the community we all love. That’s what makes VIP Alexandria so special: the promise that anyone could make it to print…even on the cover. (Surprise, Sergio and Yamali! We couldn’t have asked for a more glamorous inaugural issue cover photo!)
ACCOUNT EXECUTIVES Shelly Rollins
As you flip through the pages of this inaugural issue, you will find smiling faces at dozens of local events, a charity spotlight, fall fashion tips, a historical home tour, and even a wedding feature. This first issue is even more exciting because it hits the stands at the height of the dining season, which is why October’s special section is called “A Taste of Alexandria.” Our photojournalists spent these past few weeks attending events, with a focus on the local eateries, wineries, and distilleries to capture the stories of the local professionals who have turned their industries into an art form and the patrons who support them. (Every issue of VIP Alexandria will have a special section, so be sure to stay tuned to our social media for more information.)
PHOTOJOURNALISTS Julie Carrasco Jeremiah “JD” Davis David D’Agostino Noah Haney Cindy Hurtado Catherine May Taylor Donovan Wilde
Speaking of our photojournalists, this inaugural issue would not be possible without the hustle and heart of our amazing team. Their dedication to our community is nothing short of inspiring! And to the community of Alexandria: Thank you. Thank you for your unwavering support. This publication is for YOU and we promise to make you proud.

It takes a special mindset and determination to successfully launch a business. It takes focus on the task at hand, a vision for the future, and a plan to enact. It also takes logic – knowing when to pivot and change the strategy, when to bring in more help, when to hunker down and wait for the perfect opportunity, and when to push ahead no matter what.
Group, he spent plenty of time in the thick of action, serving two tours in Kosovo between 1999 and 2001 as well as two in Iraq in 2003 and 2004. After his separation from the Army in 2004, he went on to take a contract job with Triple Canopy, which took him back to Iraq in 2005.
In examining how Crum’s Sauce owner and founder Christopher Crum got his start and seeing where the company is now, it’s clear he possesses all those skills. The line of hot sauces claims table space in myriad area restaurants and in the spice cabinets of their many chili-head fans. And with good reason, because rather than sticking to one fiery, tear-inducing recipe, Crum’s offers a variety of sauces with flavor profiles ranging from slightly sweet and smoky to major heat balanced by a hint of fruitiness. It’s obvious he knows his peppers and that he’s worked hard to perfect the products. His business partners also share his vision and support the company’s forward motion; without brothers Doug Clift and Russell Clift as his cofounders, Crum might never have gotten the brand off the ground.
Through it all, Crum maintained a sense of home by keeping container gardens, having gotten his green thumb from his mother. What he grew in those container gardens, however, took an interesting turn in 2000 when he unexpectedly found himself biting into a serrano pepper he’d accidentally picked up from the grocery store while shopping for green beans. It was a happy accident, one might say, as it led him on a path that he might otherwise not have ventured down. He went on to grow his first batch of peppers in Fort Carson, Colorado, then another in Kosovo, and then in D.C. Crum has continued to grow what eventually became the secret to his entrepreneurial success, which now gives him the means to support an organization whose mission is invaluable to those it serves – the Green Beret Foundation (GBF).
That same mindset also served him well during his 10 years in the Army from 1994 until his honorable discharge in 2004. As a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant in the 10th Special Forces
His time in the Special Forces best culminated his interests and experience, giving him the drive to support his brethren. GBF serves these men and women – known as the “quiet professionals” OCTOBER 2019 • 17

who make up the Green Beret – and their families in times of need. Whether someone has experienced an injury, death, or is transitioning into civilian life, GBF provides physical and emotional support and needed resources. Knowing the importance of that mission, it’s no wonder Crum’s donates 5 percent of their annual profits to GBF. “I’ve lost friends to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and cannot comprehend the pain and loss their families have endured,” said Crum. “The Green Beret Foundation takes care of the needs of families in a variety of ways, so we’re proud to be able to give them financial support to help further their work.” In addition, Crum’s also sponsors the Green Beret Classic golf tournament at the Army Navy Country Club in Fairfax. “We are grateful to Crum’s Sauce, a Special Forces veteranowned small business, to have donated over $500 in support of the Green Beret Foundation and its mission,” said Frances Arias, GBF’s Director of Operations. In addition to financial donations, Crum’s has also generously poured on the sauces. “The in-kind donations by Crum’s have been gifted to our D.C. Green Beret Classic golfers and also sent in GBF casualty support backpacks to wounded Green Berets healing and recovering at Walter Reed 18 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
National Military Medical Center. Chris’ products serve as an added touch from a fellow Green Beret to remind them of the Special Forces brotherhood they are a part of,” Arias added. From the adventurous life of a Green Beret to a pepper-head with his own line of sauces, Crum has proven that with a mission set before him, he gets the job done. And now with every bottle of his hot sauce sold, he’s proving he’s still got his comrades’ backs.

While running a pharmacy might be her day job, when 30 year-old Stephanie Parkes isn’t wearing a white lab coat, she’s walking her own runway, assembling fantastic fashion finds into chic looks that are enough to make any fellow fashionista swoon. And swoon, they do, as she keeps the lifestyle blog she started in May of 2019 at the top of the daily feed with posts highlighting local boutiques, restaurants, and events happening around Alexandria. A passionate follower of fashion whose love for finding the perfect look began at an early age, she delights in finding new designers and trends, though she knows the value of keeping a classic style. As anyone reading her blog can easily see, this lovely lady knows her stuff, and she’s sharing a little of that style insight with VIP Alexandria Magazine.

VIP: What are the best pieces to have for fall?
VIP: Are there any rules for wearing certain styles of boots?
SP: Chunky sweaters, midi skirts, and great quality denim. Fall is about being cozy! I can never have too many cashmere sweaters; and right now, the more oversized, the better. As far as denim goes, it’s good to update your denim each year to reflect the current styles. I’m loving high-waisted and flared!
SP: Rules are meant to be broken, and you’ll see that with boots this season. And with all the different denim styles, it’s okay to experiment with how you wear your boots. However, I do foresee Western boots and over-the-knee boots being out and combat boots or Dr. Martens being in. Similarly to how you can wear sneakers with basically everything, combat boots are a comfy option that can take the place of a sneaker in cooler temps.
VIP: Are there any new trends for the season, and what are they? SP: Animal print and vegan leather. You can’t go wrong, as these trends are so easy to incorporate into your wardrobe and are accessible at all price points. And it’s no longer just leopard print; snake print and zebra are hot right now. VIP: What colors are coming into play right now? SP: Plaid isn’t a color, but it’s definitely the print of the season. Color-wise, there are a lot of the classic browns and blacks, as usual; but jewel tones (purples, blues, pinks, and shades of green from pistachio to emerald) are also everywhere! VIP: What core pieces should every woman have in her closet for fall? SP: Booties and a light jacket. Don’t get me wrong, knee high boots are both timeless and trendy, as well, but booties are just so versatile. You can wear them with jeans, dresses, or skirts. Jackets of all kinds are essential for fall, whether leather, faux fur, or a blazer—there are so many options. You’ll look instantly polished!
VIP: Hats are a big fall trend, so which shapes look best on which face shapes? SP: I’m not a big hat person, but Western hats and felt hats are in this fall and can definitely elevate your look! Generally, the longer your face, the wider your brim can be. VIP: Which pieces are worthy of big investments? SP: Invest in timeless, quality pieces versus trendy items. If you don’t already own a high quality blazer, start there. Blazers are hot right now but also classic and universally flattering. You can find amazing ones in stores throughout Old Town including Donna Lewis, The Hive, Periwinkle, and Tsalt. VIP: Are there any do’s/don’ts for fall dressing? SP: These days, you can make just about anything work, but Do’s are definitely to accept the maximalist trend and experiment with lots of texture, such as sequins, satin, faux fur, or unexpected pattern combinations. It also means going “heavy” on fun accessories like jewelry, hair accessories, bags, and belts. Don’ts would include trying not to fall into the trap of “basic” fall dressing. It’s not chic to have the same plaid blanket scarf and knee high boots as everyone else. Another Don’t: Anything too revealing. The more conservative, vintage style is so in!

Osteria Marzano The Father / Daughter Duo Bringing Authentic, Handmade Italian to Alexandria Story by Alexandria Lindstrom | Photography by Gianluca Marzano & Submitted by Osteria Marzano
32 32••VIP VIPALEXANDRIA ALEXANDRIAMAGAZINE MAGAZINE
There’s a certain expectation of loving food and being able to create beautifully flavored, robust dishes that comes with being Italian. It’s part of the culture, running deep within their veins, which is why these are a people known the world over for their cuisine. The handmade pastas, the complex sauces, the herbaceous and balanced flavor profiles…It’s all there, in every dish, no matter how simple or elaborate, from the so-called peasant foods passed down from generation to generation to more refined plates that show attention to detail and sophisticated techniques. The Italian way is to love and understand food and what it represents—not just the ingredients, but also its power to people together at the table as they share a meal and forge bonds. That love and understanding is almost palpable in each bite, and for Carmine Marzano of Osteria Marzano, it’s what drives him as a chef and restauranteur and keeps his guests coming back for more. Born in Calabria, Italy, Chef Carmine is as authentically Italian as you can get, having learned the ways of the kitchen from his father and developing his love for creating food at a very early age. Naturally, that love led him to pursue professional training at Istituto Alberghiero Statale di Pienerolo before he went on to become the executive chef at the exclusive Ristorante Giudice
in Turin, Italy, where he held the prestigious position for three years. And when critically acclaimed Chef Roberto Donna later opened his restaurant Galileo, Chef Carmine followed him to America and served as his sous chef for four years. As fate would have it, the move to America also brought with it the chance for love, and he soon met—and married—a fellow Italian, a young woman whose father had made a name for himself in the industry as the owner of Washington’s famous Luigi’s restaurant. When the time came to venture out on his own, Chef Carmine opened Ristorante Luigino and successfully ran it for 17 years before shifting his focus back to Luigi’s. A family man to the core, it stood to reason that Chef Carmine’s next restaurant venture would be one launched with his daughter, Elena Pouchelon, who had the visionary eye to create the look and feel of the restaurant space and worked closely with her father to bring that vision to life in every aspect, from the finishings to the furnishings, and paid attention to every last detail. What they achieved was nothing short of spectacular, attaining a level
of beauty that matches the dishes her father creates. The restaurant began simply enough, a serendipitous meeting of timing, opportunity, and—of course—financial backing that prompted Pouchelon to approach her father in 2012 and propose opening a restaurant together. “My dad is my best friend, and I knew we could work together,” she says. Much to her relief, the idea was met with wholehearted agreement from her father. “She has young ideas—fresh ideas,” he says. Those fresh ideas culminated in the design of Osteria Marzano itself, which features a granite-topped bar so massive that it offers seating for nearly forty guests, rightly holding pride of place in the center of the long, narrow restaurant. Add to that an Alabaster White 3Form Stone liquor display, walls accented with natural walnut wood, rich fabric ceiling panels, and even tufted-panel walls painted in high gloss red in the bathrooms, and it’s clearly evident that Pouchelon has a keen sense of style and understands how to stand out from the rest. Standing out from the rest, however, couldn’t come at the cost of alienating guests looking for a place that still felt casual, and finding that balance that would make them seem elevated yet intimate and traditional was a tricky undertaking. Fortunately,
Osteria Marzano has managed it quite well. “We wanted to create a neighborhood spot that was trendy and serves authentic Italian food,” Pouchelon says simply. “We wanted to create an atmosphere where guests felt welcomed into our home and had a second family.” Naturally, a large part of creating that feeling rests squarely on the shoulders of Chef Carmine, whose talent in the kitchen is responsible for bringing the flavors of Italy to the plate and transporting his guests back to the land of his birth. “I love creating dishes that mentally transport people to Italy when they close their eyes and take a bite,” he says. From the first taste of antipasti to the delicate handmade ravioli, signature pizzas, and beautifully cooked seafood entrees to the last sweet morsel of tiramisu, crème brulee, or their famous Nutella Pizza, a trip to Italy is only one bite away. Osteria Marzano is located at 6361 Walker Lane, Metro Park VI (#140), Franconia, Virginia 22310. For more information, call (703) 313-9700 or visit www.osteriamarzano.com OCTOBER 2019 • 33

People You Should Know
Executive Chef Nicki Lewis Story by Alexandria Lindstrom | Photography by Catherine May Taylor
36 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE
“I love food. I love the science behind it. I love the creativity and freedom. I love that you can show someone where you’re from and have an entire conversation with them without ever saying a word. Food can do that, and it’s amazing.” - Nicki Lewis, Executive Chef | Cafe 44
A native of central Florida with a love of diverse cuisines and mad skills at turning sugar, butter, and flour into edible masterpieces, the proverbial stamps in Chef Nicki Lewis’s culinary passport have come not from trotting the actual globe, but from working as a young chef at Walt Disney World’s beloved Epcot World Center. It was here that Lewis gained the attention of some of the best chefs in the company—and in the industry—and received invaluable training that would make a lasting impact on her future. With such acclaimed culinary geniuses as Chef Gregg Hannon and Chef Scott Hunnel willing to teach her the tricks of the trade, she truly gained an understanding of dining at its highest. And when the legendary Chef Art Smith opened Homecoming at Disney Springs, he tapped Lewis to be his sous chef, making the Happiest Place on Earth the place where all her dreams began to come true.
Lewis explains. “I created a small menu to get us going and asked each person on my kitchen team to give input: What are we missing? What would you order? I worked with each of them individually to finalize each plate, and I really loved everyone’s creativity and passion. I wanted to make sure that my team knows how much I appreciate them and their dedication and to help keep pushing them to be creative and become better cooks.” Whatever she’s making, Lewis brings her passion to the plate— and that passion has a flavor profile more powerful than any spice could impart. “A salty person makes salty food. A happy person makes happy food. If you rush it, it’ll taste rushed. Freshness counts, and salt matters. The sauce for my shrimp and grits takes around five hours to make, and you can really taste the love in it. Those little things are what makes people want to eat your food.”
Her time there taught her what it took to build a restaurant from the ground up, from menu planning to execution. And while she could easily have made a successful career for herself for the foreseeable future there, fate—and her husband’s military career—took her to Northwest Florida, where she worked under Chef Nathan Davis, gaining a deeper appreciation for her Southern roots in a way that would forever change her style of cooking. “That time had the greatest influence on my cooking and gave me the most courage to find myself and speak through my food,” says Lewis. “I pride myself on being Southern, and it is truly something I enjoy sharing with people through food.” That level of passion is something that any restaurant would consider an asset, and now that she’s manning the kitchen at Café 44, it’s something that her guests taste with every dish she puts out. Less than a year into her time with the team, she’s taken the menu and made it something totally unique, and not simply something that speaks to her culinary point of view, but one that her entire staff can take ownership in. After all—they were the inspiration behind it. “When I started at Café 44, we decided to rebrand and take a step away from dinner and more towards the happy hour scene,” OCTOBER 2019 • 37

“I’m lucky to have so many guests who are intrigued by the behind-thescenes rigmarole of what I do. I try to impart a bit of knowledge about my own inspirations and cocktail knowledge so that they can hopefully explore their own inventions.”
- Joe Q., Award Winning Mixologist | Cafe 44

There’s an art to creating the perfect cocktail, an understanding of the subtleties and nuances of flavors and the way that certain ingredients can coexist harmoniously in a glass in a way that not only works, but seems to dance on the palate. It is no mere combining of this and that. Rather, it’s a deliberate, thoughtful mixture that shows creativity and respect for all the elements, the art of it all balanced by a certain amount of science that becomes a masterpiece in liquid form.
resume that includes working at True Food Kitchen and The Luminary in Atlanta before coming to Alexandria to open Café 44 with his wife and sister in 2016. “During that period of training in Atlanta, I learned how to handle loads of prep, how to create infusions, how to maintain balance in flavors, and how to properly use citrus and juices,” Joe Q. recalls. “While I worked at The Luminary, classic cocktails were the inspiration for everything, so I had to memorize 30 preProhibition cocktail recipes before the proverbial ‘bar key’ was entrusted to me. It was there that I helped craft my first craft cocktail menu.” That skill is something that his patrons at Café 44 now enjoy regularly, as Joe Q.’s creativity—and his obvious passion—come to bear in every rhythmic flourish of his shaker, every pour, every well-placed garnish. His cocktail menu proves that he doesn’t just sling his drinks—he designs them the way a chef would design a dish, and the results speak for themselves. “I love the inherent versatility of the ingredients—utilizing the savory notes of micro greens, incorporating a wide variety of fresh juices, constantly evolving techniques. My favorite thing of all, though, is the camaraderie that is built within the industry. Brainstorming, trading stories, or just casual chats with others passionate in the craft. That’s what gets me going, man,” Joe Q. says with a twinkle in his eye. “Being an introverted extrovert, I love meeting new people and giving them an experience that, hopefully, they find unique to being at my bar. The ability to always keep on my toes and also escape behind prep and other guests makes it fun and challenging!” he goes on.
A proficient master of mixology, bar genius at Café 44 Joe Quintero—or “Joe Q.,” as he’s more widely known—possesses that very set of characteristics that makes a great maker of drinks, his love of the craft something that shows in every cocktail he creates. As someone with eight years of experience behind the bar with seven of those years focused on learning and perfecting his mixing skills, he is now a craft cocktail artiste, boasting a
Basing his signature menu on the foundation of classic cocktails, he still puts his own spin on those inspirations to achieve something one-of-a-kind and special. Case in point: the Cabin in the Woods. “It’s my take on a hickory smoked Old Fashioned, with a touch of a Manhattan vibe from a balsamic based syrup that we make in-house,” Joe Q. says. “It’s a wonderful winter drink, but still popular even on balmy summer days.” One sip of his drinks leaves little wonder that Café 44 has become such a hotspot; and this place certainly knows how to mix it up. We wanted to tie in traditional décor with modern so that people would feel like they were staying in an updated part of history. - Martha Peterson, Owner | Interior Designer
There’s something incredible about the prospect of sleeping in a room where history whispers from every crevice, where the corners of every room have a story to tell, and the past seems to collide with the present. And while George Washington didn’t actually sleep in any of the eight bedrooms located in this fourstory home on Cameron Street, his stately presence can easily be imagined within the walls, as he once owned the property and lived in a townhouse next door. Most of the rooms weren’t original to the structure that stood on the lot during Washington’s time, but the kitchen does hold that distinction. It is in this very space where Washington’s meals were once prepared. As was the practice then, the kitchen that served his household was located off property, where the
threat of all-too-frequent kitchen fires was less of a concern. Now more than 200 years later, that kitchen is fully kitted out with professional-grade appliances and enclosed by a newly designed home comprising five bedrooms, each with their own baths; three suites with their own wet bar and living rooms; and a common area that includes a living room, dining room, tavern room, and a half bath. The home renovations were quite an undertaking and were the brainchild of Martha and Steven Peterson, who have extensive property development and real estate investment experience. After successfully flipping a property next door, the thenowner of the home on Cameron approached the couple and offered it to them, confident they would be able to make the

existing property spectacular. Renovations began after the $2 million deal was sealed, and the house became known as The George – a historically inspired luxury rental property allowing guests a chance to connect with the past while enjoying modern sophistication. “Really, the kitchen was the deciding factor in purchasing the property,” explains Martha Peterson, who also runs The Brick House, a home renovation company known for high-end design. With her keen eye for decor and her natural approach to design, the project achieves the perfect marriage of modern-meetshistoric through its furnishings and finishes. “My son and I are both decorators, and we wanted to tie in traditional decor with modern so that people would feel like they were staying in an updated part of history,” Martha Peterson explained. Though she loves each room for its own charm, the foyer tops her list, as one can stand and readily see the living room, dining room, and kitchen. “It’s a space that grabs you, especially with the wallpaper, which is a beautiful gray-scale mural of a landscape with George Washington riding on a horse.
It really makes me feel like I’m in Washington’s home when I walk into that space,” she said. The George has been fully booked every weekend since its official opening as an Airbnb in July, with future bookings reaching nearly 80 percent capacity. Each of the suites can be rented individually, or the entire house can be rented for larger groups. The Petersons foresee weddings, family reunions, and other special occasions in the future. All accommodations include use of the common areas – living room, dining room, kitchen, tavern room, and the beautiful courtyard – and come with tickets to visit Mt. Vernon, what was once George Washington’s main residence. Whether enjoying a night away or planning a special occasion, a stay at The George promises to be memorable – maybe even one for the history books. The Twig is a volunteer organization of women devoted to providing financial aid, volunteer service and support to the hospital. Six homes were featured on this year’s tour, including a residence on Prince Street which sits on one of two known lots that George Washington owned in Alexandria. When empty lots were first sold, owners were given two years to build on them or they were forced to forfeit their land. This Prince Street residence was one of three houses on the tour featuring McVeigh architecture, where an original “Flounder” – an easy to build structure with one side tall, the other short, and with a single roof line – is later joined to a larger home with a curved wall.

Cancer is a diagnosis that’s devastating at any age, but even more so when that diagnosis is given to a child. Childhood is a time that should be filled with hope and joy, as the whole world is new and big and limitless. But the five little letters that spell cancer can have huge impact, turning what childhood should be into dreams that might not be within reach. For the family of Whitaker Weinburger, the diagnosis of neuroblastoma when Whitaker was only a year old cruelly shattered their hopes of a normal childhood for him, filling their days with surgeries, blood transfusions, and rounds of chemotherapy that stole his energy. Each birthday reached was a milestone, but they were shadowed with fear with the threat of his disease hanging heavily over the celebrations. Having just reached his fourth birthday, Whitaker and his family were able to celebrate with abandon, as the toddler isn’t just surviving, he’s now thriving. His latest scans showed he’s cancer free, which might be the greatest birthday gift he will ever receive. It was truly a reason to party, so when his mom, Erin Weinburger, posted on Facebook requesting owners of yellow cars in the Alexandria area to line their street in celebration, it didn’t just get a little bit of attention, it went viral. A longtime fan of Transformers whose favorite bot is the Bumblebee, Whitaker’s birthday wish was to receive a yellow toy car resembling the character. His request was simple enough, but with this being his first cancer-free birthday ever, his parents wanted to make that wish come true in a very big way. Come true it did, Whitaker was greeted by more than 100 yellow cars and trucks lining the full one-mile stretch between his house and his preschool the morning of his birthday. “We were there to support the whole family during this exciting occasion and were very happy and eager to be part of the celebration,” said Lieutenant Sean Casey of the Alexandria Sherriff’s Office, who was on hand with other members of the sheriff’s office to help manage traffic.
“It was a great example of what a community can do when they rally around a great cause, and this was a very easy cause to get behind. The community really represented well, and the outpouring of support was a great thing to see.” -LT. SEAN CASEY Whitaker was overcome by sheer magnitude of it all, and his excitement was contagious. While he might have looked out at the sea of yellow before him and simply saw a birthday wish come true, there was something much more powerful at work: Those hulking pieces of metal and fiberglass were transformed into a physical representation of love, support, and perhaps most importantly, hope. The event was a moving experience, and witnessing the determination in children so young was bolstering, even more so when considering the cause. With willpower and plans to expand, the organization is surely making a difference.

A Faire Fair
The History of the Maryland Rennaisance Festival Story by Alexandria Lindstrom | Photography by Julie Carrasco
From chainmail and armor to peasant tunics and breeches, plumed hats, and cinch-waist gowns, the elaborate garb worn during the Renaissance was a far cry from modern-day attire. But for three months each year, the Maryland Renaissance Festival allows people to step back to a time when minstrels roamed the streets, wenches wielded pitchers of mead, and chivalry played out in jousts as spectators watched with bated breath. The thought and planning that goes into the festival is extensive, as every aspect of the festival is intended to look and feel authentic to the day. While they might not have had fried macaroni and cheese on a stick then, who says it’s wrong to take a few liberties when it comes to fair fare? From monstrous smoked turkey legs to more unexpected offerings such as croissant sundaes, gyros, corn dogs, and even smoothies and wraps, each pathway located through the festival village is rife with opportunity to satisfy your cravings.
Hear ye, hear ye: From the food and the music to the unique creations you’ll find lining the pathways, the Maryland Renaissance Festival is an all-ages adventure. Whether you fancy yourself a member of the highest class or a lowly peasant, there’s no limit to the fun you can have when you take a step back in time. The Maryland Renaissance Festival is open weekends through October 20 and is located at 1821 Crownsville Rd., Annapolis, MD 21401. For dates, ticket pricing, and more information, call 410-266-7304 or visit www.rennfest.com.
No village would be complete without merchants and artisans, so the festival features crafters, merchants, and artisans selling goods such as handcrafted jewelry, apparel, metal sculptures, pottery, and leather goods. There’s something to see and do at every turn, as the festival is a feast for the senses, and it is a great way to spend time with friends and family. Keeping with the theme, vendors and festival members also dress in period apparel. For those who don’t have period-specific garments on hand, the festival rents costumes for anyone who wishes to have some role-play fun. Trade in your daily identity and become a wench, maiden, knight, monk, or peasant. Your imagination can run wild, though a corseted dress might keep your waist in check and need a little loosening after a turkey leg or two! OCTOBER 2019 • 65

| Mount Vernon Colonial Market + Fair
Story + Photography by Julie Carrasco
Mount Vernon’s annual two-day Colonial Market & Fair embraced 18th century American life with dozens of authentic craftspeople, reenactors, and artisans. The colonial music and garments were reminiscent of when the colonies were first established. Attendees enjoyed demonstrations of 18th century crafting techniques, performances by reenactors, and activities for children such as ice cream making and puppet shows. Attendees could watch handcrafted food and pastries being made before purchasing them. Colonial artisans were available for storytelling and conversation. The 12-acre field was converted into a marketplace filed with unique handmade gifts – perfect for early holiday shopping. Attendees could also simply sit back and enjoy the sight of the mansion that was once George Washington’s home.

Ten Thousand Villages Celebrating 25 Years with the Non-Profit that’s Changing the World Story by Georgia Shenk | Photography by Georgia Shenk + Courtesy of Ten Thousand Villages
It’s difficult not to fall in love with all the bustling stores in Old Town Alexandria, but one small boutique on King Street stands out from the rest. From the minute you walk into Ten Thousand Villages, you’re likely to feel like a kid in a candy store. The first thing you’ll notice about the shop is its eclectic collection of beautiful fair trade items. Everything – including jewelry made from Cambodian war artifacts and Nepalese singing bowls – is ethically sourced. The second thing you’ll notice about the boutique are its people and the stories they’ve collected over the years they’ve been in business. Ten Thousand Villages is gearing up to celebrate its 25th anniversary and the excitement is tangible. Branching off from the corporate division of Ten Thousand Villages, the Old Town location has a story all its own. Employing mostly female artisans from more than ten thousand villages worldwide, the company puts people and the planet first. The store ensures their makers earn a fair and livable wage in safe working conditions while creating wares that come from recyclable and renewable materials in their own environments. Veteran volunteer Julie Becker first came to Ten Thousand Villages as a shopper 22 years ago but connected with the mission and wanted to get more involved. “I love that we’re able to sustain our artisans, instead of just offering a one-time sale,” Becker said. “In the holidays, we get these beautiful palm leaf garlands. There was a young woman with two children named
Ronnie Mani. Ronnie Mani was living in a mud hut on the side of the road and she showed us that she could make these folded palm leaf garlands. Ten Thousand Villages made arrangements for her to build a workshop, and in time, Ronnie Mani became the president of her village, her children went to college, and she employed most of the town.” Stories like Mani’s whisper out of almost every corner of Ten Thousand Villages. “We’re providing vital income for people who can’t find it in their home countries. We give them the dignity to say that they’re earning their own living. It’s not charity, it’s a relationship that we’re building with our artisans,” said Kate McMahon, director for the Alexandria division. “I get excited about the creativity of the products that the artisans make, the resources that they use, and the stories we get to share with our customers so that we can buy more.” In one such story, McMahon talks about Rosa, a domestic violence survivor who moved just outside Lima, Peru, to work to support her nine children. In the process of trying to rebuild her life, an earthquake destroyed her home. Rosa was resilient, taking her homemade vicuna dolls to the local market to sell. Ten Thousand Villages took note of them and soon placed an order for 1,000 dolls, paying for them up front. As a result, Rosa was able to rebuild her home in a safe area, send her children to school, and opened a storefront within the village. OCTOBER 2019 • 69
“I think people know that we’re a global maker-tomarket, but I don’t think people often know that we’re a nonprofit,” McMahon said. “We’re engrossed in our community — we have a local board of directors that oversees our store, we have volunteers that are all a part of our community. We carry the name Ten Thousand Villages because we want to support our artisans. We’re a part of that network and proud to be part of that network.” With an average buying relationship of 25 years, it would be easy to be proud of that network. Artisans have watched their communities develop and thrive with the resources afforded by Ten Thousand Villages. In the time Ten Thousand Villages Alexandria has been open, parents have seen their children grow up healthy and go to college, artisans have rebuilt homes, and handicraft skills have been passed from one generation to another. As the Ten Thousand Villages

website boasts, “When women gain financial independence, their daughters, families and communities flourish, breaking the cycle of poverty.” October is Fair Trade Month and Ten Thousand Villages is celebrating with several events and sales. A fair trade clothing event will run all month with ethically sourced garments from such brands as Mata Traders, Passion Lilie, Maggie’s Organics, and Global Mamas. You can also join the staff and volunteers for wine and refreshments during Ten Thousand Village’s 25th anniversary party from 6-9 p.m. on October 25. With volunteer opportunities and a bustling boutique full of beautiful wares, stories, and volunteer opportunities, the only thing missing is you. Sweet-smelling barbecue, live guitar, and laughter filled the air as the sun set on Old Town. The event drew a diverse guest list, including curious neighbors and Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. Toward the end of the evening, many even enjoyed a fierce bingo competition. Guests left with smiles on their faces and great food in their stomachs as Friends of Guest House celebrated 45 years of successfully helping women reenter the community after incarceration – proving the past does not have to define the future.

In the great debate between comfy sweats paired with good old prime-time TV and the prospect of having to glam up and go out, the decision is usually firmly in favor of the former. Luckily for Adriana Hernandez and Glenn Lum, however, a case of FOMO and college-level worry about looking “lame” during Welcome Week 2013 at VCU won out; and after Adriana almost gave Glen the cold shoulder when he approached her at a party, the pair went from sharing some scintillating conversation and playing beer pong to exchanging numbers and setting themselves on a course bound for love. That one night led to nearly five years of dating as the couple completed their college careers, with school transfers and new

jobs taking them in different directions that put distance between them. Physical distance aside, however, Adriana and Glen were determined not to let their relationship fall by the wayside, and they used the time apart to deepen their growth both on the personal level as individuals as well as together as a couple. “Although that period of our lives was hard, the distance allowed us to progress separately as ourselves while developing a deep level of trust and respect for one another,” Adriana says. Trust and respect are undeniably two of the cornerstones of a rock-solid relationship, and as time progressed, the pair seemed to grow closer and closer to cementing their bond forever. And when life began to settle down with plans for their futures more
clearly in sight, they moved in together and started looking ahead at what they hoped their lives would hold. With distance no longer an issue, they expected that making time together would be less of a challenge; but their opposing work schedules presented quite the obstacle. As proverbial ships passing in the night, Adriana and Glenn soon realized the importance of being intentional in planning their time with one another so that their connection would not suffer; and it was with that intentionality that they booked a two-week vacation in February 2018 that would start with a five-day cruise to the Bahamas and end with a week spent in Venice and Rome. Lovers’ paradise by all accounts, their each of their destinations had all the makings of the perfect backdrop for an epic proposal.
It was only natural, then, that Adriana had high hopes that she would come home with the ultimate souvenir: an engagement ring. “I was super excited for the trip and hoped that Glenn might possibly propose,” she recalls. “I jokingly texted my best friend that if there was no ring at the end of this trip, it was going to be a long flight back to America!” Fortunately for Glenn and Adriana both, the flight wasn’t long. So happy was her heart, in fact, that Adriana might easily have floated home on her own cloud, as Glenn had fulfilled her greatest wish. “We spent the first few days exploring Venice and taking in all the Italian culture, and on Valentine’s Day, Glenn took me out to a very romantic dinner at a fancy restaurant on the water. I took over two hours getting ready that night, filled with excitement at the idea that Glenn might propose to me. Glenn left me at the hotel to finish getting ready and came back with a beautiful bouquet of roses, and then we left for dinner. When dinner was over, I wondered, Why hasn’t Glenn gotten down on one knee yet? We decided to walk along the canals of Venice, with the stars above us, and then Glenn took my hand and got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. The rest of the night, I was filled with joy and could not stop looking at the ring on my left hand.” OCTOBER 2019 • 77

Just over a year later on April 6, 2019, Adriana added another ring to her left hand after exchanging vows with Glenn at Army Navy Club in Washington, DC. Wearing a Stella York A-line dress with a sparkling, beaded bodice and a tulle skirt with a long train, she looked every bit the blushing bride as she and Glenn became united in wedded bliss before joining their guests in a celebration filled with good food and drink, lively music, and enough love to keep the party going all night. After cutting into Fresh Fruit Cakes made by Richmond’s Shyndigz bakery, the newlyweds were sent off to start their honeymoon and start really planning their Happily Ever After.

The 4th Annual Capes and Cocktails fundraiser for St Jude's Children's Research Hospital made a few changes this year in switching their venue to Virtue Feed and Grain as well as dressing up their annual party. This year, guests were invited to enjoy an open bar sponsored by Ketel One and Bulleit and snacks provided by Virtue while dressed up in their favorite cocktail attire or letting their inner child play with fun super hero-themed outfits. This event raised money for Team Super Lewkas during the yearly St. Jude Walk/Run DC in memory of Lewkas, a prior patient of St Jude, who sadly gained his angel's cape at only 4 years old.
