S
ome moments in life just seem surreal and this is one of those for me. That moment is actually months of work culminating into the Premiere Issue of VIP 30A Magazine being distributed. This dream come true is actually nearly 18 years of trial and errors, ups and downs while constantly moving in a direction. That direction actually began when my brother, Jason and I developed the original VIP Magazine concept in a modest size Tennessee community near Memphis. VIP Jackson Magazine came to life in November 2003 as just a small idea in a small town. The small idea quickly grew legs as we partnered with a feisty young lady by the name of Leigh Reeves to produce the same product in Jackson, MS. Our original paper, the Pickwick Sun, we soon converted to VIP Pickwick Lake Magazine. At this point it was obvious there was a demand for our product and it was off to the races. Over the years to come, we built strategic partnerships with a select few publishers and developed several more markets in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky. It was 2013 when the allure of Destin and the Gulf Coast and my love for publishing culminated in the birth of VIP Destin Magazine. While Tennessee was still home at the time, my time spent that year learning the people and culture here is when I truly fell Jeff Watson in love with this area we call the Emerald Coast. Eight years later Founder/Publisher as these markets have grown significantly, I felt it was finally the right time to bring a VIP exclusively to the exploding 30A and VIP Magazines South Walton area. From the very beginning, our goal with VIP was to focus on non-profit organizations and the many charitable fundraisers they host each year. As the pages grew in number, we expanded the scope to include all walks of life always keeping our focus on the philanthropic side of our communities. Over time, the words we put on our media kit over 10 years ago, “Celebrating Life…One Event at a Time”, became our motto and events and photos became a way of life. Most of the VIP’s average 20-30 events per month which means we are somewhere almost every day documenting local happenings. Along with events, we love to include profiles on interesting people and organizations, explore travel destinations and provide you with an extensive local calendar of events. As for Walton County and 30A specifically, it is such a broad term. Over the years I have decided one of the more challenging things to do here is define this area in one word. 30A, Destin, Ft. Walton, Panama City, Emerald Coast, Gulf Coast…its all beautiful and we love it all. But 30A with out a doubt has its own culture and vibe. And even that can be distinguished by words like Rosemary, Alys, Seaside, Grayton, Blue Mountain, Santa Rosa Beach and many more. Yes, it is this area which I truly grew to love during some of the down times over the last 18 months, that I am thrilled to be immersed in. Of course, tackling an endeavor likes this requires support from behind the scenes which I always have with Maggie, and of course Jason and Ross back in our Tennessee office along with my mother Donna who’s always there to support our newest venture. I was also blessed to meet a talented young lady of Grayton Beach, Kayla Burleson. Kayla, while she wears many hats, is our Editor, whom I owe a huge thanks for the many long hours put into bringing this product to life! I hope you enjoy reading this first issue as much as we did producing it…looking forward to many more to come!
?¿? Where’s Waldo ?¿?
G
ames make life a little more fun so we thought we would play a game in each issue of VIP 30A Magazine. The game is called Where’s Waldo?, or in this case where’s Megan?. The goal is to correctly count the number of times Megan Harrison, our wonderful Walton County Chamber President can be spotted on the pages of this issue. Sounds easy but remember there are a lot of pictures taken at over 20 events in this issue alone so look carefully. The first person to email the correct number to whereiswaldo@30amag.com will receive a gift certificate for dinner for two ($100 value) at one of our participating local restaurants. We will post the winner on our Facebook page once a winning email is received. Good luck and happy counting!

1,362 Miles in 50 States R Story by Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club
unning one marathon is a feat in itself. Running one in every state is phenomenal. Carolann Dunbar; member of Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club, recently completed her 52nd marathon this May, running a total of 1,362 miles in 50 states. Dunbar and her family moved to the 30A area in 2003 and became members of Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club in 2005, eventually building a house on the number four green. Shortly after moving to the area, Dunbar became known as a local running icon along 30A. Dunbar began her passion for running in 1977 at 20 years old, “Back then, men’s shoes were the only choice for running any distance,” said Dunbar. It all started with just five miles a day for her until 1997, when she ran her first marathon in Birmingham, Alabama with the encouragement of friends, family and coworkers. Since then, she set off on her journey to compete in marathons. In preparation for each marathon, Dunbar has a rigorous training schedule. “My
schedule isn’t exactly normal but it has gotten me through 52 marathons,” said Dunbar. “I run five miles a day Tuesday through Friday. Saturday is my long run. I run between 10 and 18 miles based on my schedule. Sunday is a four-mile day, an easy day to get the acid out of your muscles. Monday is a day of rest.” In 1998, Dunbar ran her first of fifty state marathons in San Diego, California. After completing the marathon in San Diego, she started to train for the Blue Angel Marathon in Florida. As of this May, Dunbar traveled to Spokane, Washington – making it her 52nd marathon. This last marathon completes her statewide marathon journey. Very few people have achieved this feat, and Dunbar is one of them.

First Light Story by John Burns
FlyTide30A/Orvis Sandestin
I
’m thankful for many things in life, but every minute spent fly fishing the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico is particularly high on my list. I have personally been fishing these waters since I discovered Grayton Beach in the late seventies. Hippies, sun bowls, and an undiscovered Eden along the coast was just a short drive from my home in New Orleans. Brown water, intertidal marsh, mosquitos, and the Vieux Carre were a stark contrast to the new world I would someday call home. Fly fishing in saltwater has also been with me since those early times in Grayton Beach. My brother introduced me to the sport one day when he walked in with two fly rod kits on cardboard, wrapped in cellophane, with a price sticker attached from Kmart. A simple beginning, but one that would launch me into a place that would become a very important part of my life. Addiction yes, but not because of any stimulus it delivered. It was the relaxing art of the cast that pulled me in and kept me connected. Hooking and landing big fish on a fly line also helped, but the tranquil effects of casting a fly rod in saltwater environments had me for life. Leaving the dock at First Light, with a Leon Russell tune in my head, always makes my day. The anticipation of summer fly fishing trips grow bigger with time. Moments on the water, and the number of casts delivered to hunting fish, become more valuable each and every year. It’s not just the value – it’s also the cost. The cost increases sequentially, not just because of the growing annual price of fuel, boats, and equipment, but because you realize there’s a finite number of times you will ever be on the water. Winters get longer while I wait for the winds to turn from the south and the surface water temperature in the Gulf to creep above 74 degrees. It’s then that you can get reunited with those semitropical predatory fish that come rolling by our part of the world and hope that this season is the one that never ends. It typically starts at First Light when the glow of the sun signals the start of the engine on the boat, and we race to and out of the Destin or Panama City Pass to search for cobia, tarpon, red fish, jacks, tuna, or other seasonal pelagic species that may be deceived by a group of feathers, flash, and thread wrapped tightly around a hook. If it’s a fish - it can be tricked to eat a fabricated fly. That’s what most of us believe and preach to others who will listen and ultimately understand. We endeavor to chase big marine fish with unique fly patterns and avoid live bait. Even the mention of live bait with some fly fishers can border sacrilege.
26 •
“Big fish on fly lines, a safe release, and horizons filled by the first light, void of traffic, construction, and confusion are all worthwhile.” We chase grand fish with big rods, egos, and determination. Although tarpon are the pinnacle prize for any fly fisher, most visitors to the area are unaware that we have a recreational tarpon fishery driven by lusty fish and migratory spawning patterns. The Silver King is one of the most desired species by fly fishers here because of its monstrous size, muscle, above air tail dancing, and natural ability to escape a strip set. They migrate along the Florida panhandle each year, between June and August, feeding in close along the beaches and embayments. Although tarpon migrations are complex and far reaching, some stay close to home while others have been found to range 1,200 miles from the initial tagging location. Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) are strange fish with a long fossil record. Currently there are two species (Atlantic and Indo-Pacific tarpon), but they date back 113 million years to the Cretaceous period. Anatomically they are easily distinguished from other fish by an additional set of bones in their throat. Although they superficially resemble giant herring, their larvae look very similar to eel. They inhabit fresh and brackish water, tolerate low dissolved oxygen, and waters of varying pH levels. A swim bladder allows them to take surface gulps of air to aid in breathing and gives them short bursts of energy. Tarpon reproduction may well drive their migration and the movement of anglers to the coast who are in hot pursuit. Spawning may urge the fish to move from coastal waters to over 100 miles offshore just prior to full and new moons. Anglers have reported seeing schools of tarpon moving offshore
prior to the full and new moons, and back into coastal waters in the days following the spawning season. While offshore, tarpon have been discovered to dive as deep as 400 feet during the days just prior to full and new moons. Pressure difference at depth is thought to aid males and females in the release of their sperm and eggs into the open water. Biologists have defined this open water spawning strategy as broadcast spawning. The eggs are fertilized in open water and later hatch as small leptocephalus larvae. The rest is up to the developing fish and its ability to escape predation by sea dwellers and fiesty craved fishers with long poles and sun burnt skin. In the spring I often preselect flies for tarpon and renew my fly line and leaders for that first trip of the season. That preparation often leads me to think of their life cycle and how our angling pursuit is intimately linked to their movements and reproductive behaviors. Maybe that’s just the trained biologist in me or maybe it’s just deep thoughts of an aging angler floating mentally in shallow waters. Others may only think of the thrill and that magical moment of time when a huge tarpon is attached to a line that you hold in your hand for a brief second or two. Regardless, the continuation of this fishery is dependent upon our growing understanding of those fish and their
needs to survive. Big fish on fly lines, a safe release, and horizons filled by the first light void of traffic, construction, and confusion are all worthwhile.

oung Professionals of Walton County (YPWC) invited the community out to celebrate the warm weather and start of summer season with a Happy Hour Social at Idyll Hounds Brewing Company on Thursday, June 10. This free event was open to YPWC members and nonmembers, featuring first drinks for free, a lively atmosphere in the Idyll Hounds taproom and beer garden, and live music performed by alternative rock/blues group Purple Monkey. The evening was generously sponsored by Centennial Bank, with a portion of the sponsorship benefiting Caring & Sharing of South Walton. This local nonprofit provides families living in Walton County with access to food, financial support, and other resources. Over the last 27 years, Caring & Sharing has assisted thousands of local families. N RENOVATION UPDATE
36 •
amed “Best Golf Course” by Visit South Walton and VIP Destin, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club is excited to announce that the best golf course in town is getting even better with its 2021 renovation underway. More than five months into construction, the new and improved look for Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club is coming together. The three-million-dollar renovation will set apart this popular golf club from every course in the area as a semi-private course destination. Beginning glimpses at the plans for the updated golf course have buzzed excitement in the community. Almost unheard of in the golf club industry, the club boasts more than a year-long waitlist for locals wanting a chance to be members of the new and improved course. Current members will be the first to experience the newly constructed beachside fairways and greens when the course reopens this fall. Among other significant changes six greens have been rough shaped and holes 11 and 14 have been the focus of the construction team in the first few weeks. Both holes received new contouring to the greens with attention focused on drainage. Hole 11 received an entirely new look with an elongated pond, a wider fairway and a narrow green that sits close to the pond on the right. Meanwhile, the par five hole 14 is very well bunkered and has an exciting “Redan” inspired putting surface which has been elevated for better visibility. Beyond the course, there are more enhancements to the golf club in creating spaces intended not only for the most seasoned golfer but also for beginners and youth. In the fall of 2019, Bergin Golf Designs, Inc. displayed their talents by first opening the club’s new short game area. The added practice area has proven to be a fantastic opportunity to work on situa-
tional practice for all shots within 50 yards of the hole. Almost any situation found around the greens on the renovated course can be duplicated and practiced at this short game area. The short game facility added two practice bunkers and ample chipping areas - all surrounding a USGA specified practice green. The club’s board of directors approved a golf enhancement that will not be found at any other area course – a new short course. Practice Facilities have never been more valuable to clubs. Members are looking to not only improve their game, but to have a valuable golf experience when their time at the club is limited. As a group, the new practice facilities will take golf at Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club to an entirely new level. In order to provide better quality turf from which to practice, the existing tee will be significantly enlarged on the driving range. The landing area will be highlighted by six well-defined target greens shaped to simulate real greens. These greens will also serve as an integrated six-hole short course. With yardages ranging from 45 to 85 yards to small but interesting greens, the short course will be a welcome opportunity for fun. Appealing targets that mimic actual golf course scenarios will enable golfers to focus better during their practice times and will result in more useful sessions. For those anxious to get a closer look at the construction progress, hole-by-hole renderings have been made available online at santarosaclub.com/course-renovation. Additionally, to keep all current and future members in the know about the progress on the course; Golf Course Architect, Bill Bergin will provide the members and community on course video updates each week. Find these updates and more through Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. JULY/AUGUST 2021 • 37

Gulf Therapy’s goal is to provide a platform to help people both on and off the water. The event was kicked off at 9 AM with the Intentional Paddle with Rose Petal Release. Aftewards, there were plenty of paddle boards for everyone to test out while paddling to live music from the dock featuring local artists; Tony and Hunter of Heritage, Dion Jones and more. Gulf Coast
Pepsi Jam Story & Photography by Campbell Entertainment & Kayla Burleson
T
he 8th Annual Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam – rescheduled twice from its original September 2020 date - wrapped Sunday night having seen record crowds enter Frank Brown Park in beautiful Panama City Beach at the first large-scale music festival to play in the U.S. in over 15 months. Headliners Lynyrd Skynyrd, Brad Paisley, Luke Bryan and 20+ other acts performed for over 23,000 live music-starved fans each day, setting attendance records over the 2019 event. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is widely credited for the festival taking place last week, received a wild ovation when he addressed the crowd during a surprise visit Sunday night. “We knew our Jammers were ready to get out, but we sure didn’t expect to break records,” said Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam Executive Producer Rendy Lovelady. “We waited 20 months for this to happen, and it was definitely worth the wait,” he added, referring to the last Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam playing September, 2019. “The best comment I heard from someone was, ‘it was great to get out and feel music again.’” For most artists on the bill, including all three headliners, the Festival was their first time on stage in at least 15 months. Riggers and stage hands, who hadn’t built a set or hung a speaker in as many months, cried when they arrived on site to
begin constructing the massive roof and stage. Such was the case for many staff, artists and crews, who treated the weekend like a long-overdue family reunion. Friday kicked off with 2019 Pepsi Southern Original winner Frank Ray, who recently signed a deal with BBR Music Group. Hit singer/songwriter CJ Solar, Jon Langston, Lindsay Ell, Joe Nichols and Cody Jinks followed before venerable Southern Rock favorites Lynyrd Skynyrd took to the stage on the first night of their re-branded Big Wheels Keep On Turnin’ Tour. Brad Paisley headlined Saturday night after Cole Swindell, Billy Ray Cyrus, Rodney Atkins, Tenille Townes, Shy Carter and Alex Hall performed. During Paisley’s set, he knelt down to autograph the small plastic guitar being held up by a young fan, and then he took off his own guitar and gave it to her. Pepsi Southern Original winner Tom Yankton opened the music on Sunday and was followed by Shelly Fairchild. Tenille Arts was next, and for the first time heard a crowd of thousands singing along to her #1 hit “Somebody Like That.” Walker Hayes and Riley Green were next before Brothers Osborne showed why they are one of the most popular country acts in the format. The screams for Luke Bryan were deafening by the time he hit
the stage. Between hits, he made good on a promise with American Idol winner Chayce Beckham to invite him on stage to perform. Luke sang one song with the fan favorite before handing the mic over for Beckham to sing an acoustic version of his “23” single. “The only reason we get to be here in Panama City Beach is because we have the best governor in the world,” Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam COO Mark Sheldon said as he addressed the crowd Sunday night. “I think it’s only appropriate that we thank him in person,” before bringing the popular governor on stage to speak to the crowd. “It was amazing to see this family come back together after a long 20 months,” Sheldon added. “Panama City Beach was ready, our staff was ready, our first responders were ready and most of all our fans were ready to get out and enjoy this amazing event again.” Friday night before Skynyrd hit the stage, Lovelady announced Chris Stapleton, Brooks & Dunn and Old Dominion will headline the 9th Annual Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam September 4-6, 2021 in Panama City Beach. Tickets, parking passes and more are currently available at www. GulfCoastJam.com.

egendary Marine, a dominant force in the boating world for the entire Emerald Coast, celebrated its 20th Year Anniversary on June 19th in style as always! A little tropical storm would not dampen the fun this evening as the Legendary showroom was transformed into an elegant venue. An evening of socializing with friends and fellow boaters was accompanied with incredible food served by My Ohana and plenty of cocktails on hand. As the evening progressed so did the party as the showroom turned dance floor. The Yacht Rock Schooner band put on an incredible performance and had everyone dancing by the end of the evening. SANTA ROSA CLUB’S
Sassy Sisters hosts
S
“PROJECT K-9”
anta Rosa Golf & Beach Club’s Sassy Sisters group presented a donation of $40,400 at their season finale event “Hats Off to Walton County Sheriff’s Office” on April 27 at Vue on 30a. At the beginning of their season, the Sassy Sisters named “Project K-9” as their philanthropic focus with hopes of raising the funds to support the acquisition of an additional working dog for the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club’s Sassy Sisters is a club within their membership that offers a full social calendar to meet the diverse interests of ladies of all ages. The group offers frequent opportunities to meet others at social events, explore local and regional attractions on day and overnight trips and get involved in the community by volunteering and fundraising. The Project K-9 fundraising campaign began in November 2020, when the Sassy Sisters
held an event at Vue on 30a entitled “Walton County Sheriff’s Office Presents: Our Courageous Canines.’’ At this event, the group learned from Sheriff Atkinson and directly from K-9 handlers, Deputy John Avery and Deputy Damon Byrd, about how valuable of a resource a K-9 is to them on a daily basis. The ladies were able to meet WCSO’s current K-9s; Jester and Colt, and watch them demonstrate their skills with both a narcotics search and a takedown on the beach. The Sassy Sisters raised funds through member donations and contributions from the local community. The group partnered with Walton County resident, Andrea Rockefeller, whose career spans more than 30 years in law enforcement with her most memorable assignment being a K-9 handler. Rockefeller felt passionately towards the campaign and pledged to match the total amount raised by the Sassy Sisters. At
the check presentation, Rockefeller revealed an additional $12,000 donation to the cause, helping the Sassy Sisters not only meet, but exceed their original goal. “K-9s provide an invaluable asset to Walton County Sheriff’s Office and to the community. They are the eyes and ears of their handlers undergoing many hours of training and strenuous real-world scenarios to achieve certification and become sworn members of our agency. Their loyal and dedicated service is one to be admired,” said Corey Dobridnia, Public Information Officer, Walton County Sheriff’s Office. “The donation from Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club means providing additional K-9s to our team to help assist with multiple aspects of law enforcement including drug detection, suspect apprehension, and more. All of this to achieve one goal; to make our community a safer place for families.” JULY/AUGUST 2021 • 57
