COMMUNITY LEADER
"WE ARE NOT THE VISIONARIES FOR THE CITY.
OUR JOB IS TO BE THE FACILITATOR TO MOLD AND DEVELOP OUR COMMUNITY TO BE EXACTLY WHAT OUR CITIZENS AND BUSINESS OWNERS WANT AND EXPECT IT BE AND BECOME." - MAYOR CROMER
MAYOR
Zoning Adjustment as well as the Slidell City Council from 2002 to 2008 before he moved on to the Louisiana House of Representatives. Serving there from 2008 until 2018, he left the HOR to take office as mayor. “I decided to run for mayor when I was on the City Council,” Cromer recalls.
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
Mayor. Wikipedia defines the word as “the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town.” With that title comes a great deal of responsibility, and for Greg Cromer, it is one he wears with great humility and respect. As the mayor of Slidell since 2018, Cromer has seen the city through some of the most trying times in recent history. Political unrest, racial tension, economic crises, hurricanes, and a worldwide pandemic have all befallen the nation, impacting the city at a cellular level that would challenge even the strongest leadership. Through it all, Cromer has never lost sight of his mission, which is to guide his city with strength and courage. Beginning his political career in 2002, Cromer spent the next 16 years working his way through various aspects of the inner workings of local and state government, serving as a member of Board of
18 I SOCIAL SLIDELL
Setting such high goals for himself at the outset of his mayoral career, Cromer was determined to deliver—regardless of the challenges that he might face. “I have tried to bring a calm, confident message to our community whenever we have been faced with adversity,” he says. “During the storm season, we regularly aired videos on our city website and Facebook pages that presented pertinent information needed for our citizens to make sound, informed decisions regarding safety. We’ve also been actively working to change the perception that doing business in Slidell is difficult by presenting ours as a business-friendly community, one that is open and welcoming to folks that want to invest in us. Another great challenge presented in an IT infrastructure that was outdated or nonexistent; and we are now developing a new IT infrastructure to support a modern, ‘connected’ city.” Over the remainder of his four years in office, Cromer has many goals that he wishes to accomplish; but even that list is not fixed, so evolutionary are the needs of the community that he serves. “The goals of a mayor are ever-changing,” he says. “We are not the visionaries for the city, the citizens are. Our job is to be the facilitator to mold and

BEAU CHENE | STATE OF THE CITIES develop our community to be exactly what our citizens and business owners want and expect it be and become. They are the ones that are invested in our community with their money and this administration with their faith and confidence.” Faith and confidence in his ability to lead are precisely what Cromer feels won his election; and over the past two and a half years that he’s been in office, he’s striven to prove that it was well-placed. “I would like to think that the people of Slidell saw someone that is friendly and approachable, someone who will listen with an open ear and an open mind,” he says. “People are often hesitant to speak to elected officials; but if people will not talk to you, it’s hard to do this job. I always welcome the opportunity to speak to folks in the community whenever and wherever the opportunity presents itself.”
“I have tried to bring a calm, confident message to our community whenever we have been faced with adversity.”
Even in the midst of a great period of uncertainty for the nation at large, Cromer can reflect on a great number of accomplishments. “We have had many small and large victories, and we celebrate them all,” says Cromer. “We have streamlined the permitting process in the city; and the impact of this has been huge for the business community. It’s helping identify Slidell as a place that is open and welcoming to both new and old businesses. We have even brought new businesses into town, filling vacant manufacturing and retail spaces with opportunities for our citizens to work in the same community in which they live.”

With more than a year left in his term as mayor, Cromer is still determined to prove his worthiness of the title and is deeply dedicated to the people who have put their faith in him.

ith its sharp peaks, smooth white expanse of stucco, stately columns, and multitude of mullioned windows, there’s something old worldly about the home that the Authement family created for themselves in Mandeville. Built in 2020, the 9500 square feet that comprise Belle Maison embodies the picture of Acadian architecture, made to look as though it is a heritage home rather than one that was completed merely a year ago.

oasting dual masters with en-suite baths as well as three additional bedrooms, four bathrooms, and an office, the home sprawls across the lush expanse of green it sits on, interrupted only by the meticulously maintained landscaping and a blue stone paver patio leading to a vibrant blue pool and a cabana area. The lot backs up to a thick expanse of trees that gives the property a sense of privacy—one of the main reasons the owners fell in love with the location. That, and the size of the property itself. “My dad and I built this home together with the plan of sharing as a family after selling both of our own homes,” says Joseph Authement, who shares the home with his wife of 16 years, Megan, and their three children as well has his parents, Pam and Rickey Authement. “We all moved to Mandeville after losing both of our homes in hurricane Katrina and had always wanted to build a home together. Then we found a perfect corner lot in a quiet cul-de-sac in the sanctuary that was over an acre to build this home on.”

Clearly, the space is big enough that the two couples and the children can comfortably live together, affording them the opportunity to share their time and their lives. “We love that we were able to bring three generations together under one roof. For us, family means everything,” says Joseph, who works for Johnson and Johnson Behind flexible robotics. Naturally, with the pool and cabana as well as the wooded area that lines the back perimeter of the property, the outdoor elements of the home have great appeal—especially for the kids and the dogs. As breathtaking as the exterior may be, it is the interior that truly shines.

The theme of white continues inside, wrapping the walls in cool, crisp colorlessness that allows the architectural details and carefully chosen décor to take focus. “We wanted to bring in some old New Orleans-French Quarter feel throughout the home because our family is originally from New Orleans,” Joseph explains. In the living room, soaring cathedral ceilings are lined with exposed beams reclaimed from the Levi Strauss factory, bringing with them an element of warmth and over 100 years of history. Anchoring the space are reclaimed antique heart of pine floors, almost mirroring the beams overhead. On the back wall, an elegant, antique style fireplace creates the perfect space to showcase art that provides a vibrant pop of color in an otherwise white expanse of space. A large chandelier hangs above, adding another touch of elegance to the rustic feel of the room.

WHERE YOUR HOME TELLS YOUR STORY
Flowing from one room to the next, the heart of pine floors and reclaimed beams on the ceilings provide a sense of continuity, as does the old Chicago brick that accents the main rooms of the first floor. The open floor plan of the living and dining room transition seamlessly into the kitchen, with a massive island claiming pride of place in the center of the room. Topped by Taj Mahal quartzite, the Shaker-style custom cabinetry continues the theme of white, with stainless steel Viking appliances offering everything a home chef could want in a kitchen. A ceramic farmhouse sink in the island lends to the French country modern look of the space, and a custom plaster vent hood above the stove incorporates perfectly with the thick crown molding tracing out the ceiling. Just off the kitchen, a 375-bottle wine cellar holds the Authements’ collection. “The kitchen and the wine cellar are really two of our favorite rooms of the house,” says Joseph. “We love to cook, so we spend a great deal of time in the kitchen.

As one would expect, the masters are, indeed, masterfully appointed. Both master bathrooms feature Carrera marble floors and countertops as well as a steam shower and freestanding tubs. The master bedrooms downstairs also boast vaulted cathedral ceilings and fireplaces with old Chicago brick and old Chicago mantles. From every aspect, Belle Maison is everything it claims to be: a beautiful house. But it’s the love in it that makes it even more beautiful.

Sarah Jacobs STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
Proud Supporter of All Super Moms! (985) 900-2410 | 70515 LA-21 SUITE D | COVINGTON, LA
50 I SOCIAL SLIDELL
Being around children all day may be her job as third grade teacher at Honey Island Elementary School, but for Sarah Jacobs those kids are also a passion. “I love being an educator because I get to make a difference in children’s lives,” says Jacobs, 31. “It’s amazing to see a student I’ve previously taught, and they’re running up to me, with a huge smile on their face, even years after teaching them. Some of our students have many challenges in their lives, so I feel extremely blessed to be able to be there for them and provide a safe haven for them in my classroom. Teachers spend such a large amount of time with their students, Monday through Friday, eight hours a day, for ten months; and I want it to be a positive and influential time for them. While it’s exciting when
one of my students figures out how to solve a math problem, it’s even more special to me when I overhear and observe them using life skills I’ve taught them in class. Not only am I here to educate academically, but my work is also to help raise kind and loving children for our future.” As someone who spends every working hour devoted to the needs of others and guiding them as they learn, she could go home every day and have not an ounce left to give anyone; but she still goes home and gives all of herself to the most important people in her life—her husband and kids. Naturally, Jacobs struggles with the classic “mom guilt” of having to juggle so many responsibilities. AUGUST 2021 I 51
SUPERMOM
But she also knows the importance of the example she sets for her two children. “Being a working mom definitely keeps me busy, but I try my best to balance everything; and my family is always my first priority,” says Jacobs. “I feel I get the best of both worlds, having a job outside of my role as a mom. My children see that my husband and I work hard to provide for our family, but I also get to be home with them on the holidays and summers, thanks to my teaching career.” With a four year-old and a two year-old at home, Jacobs certainly has her hands full; but she wouldn’t trade her work for anything. Over the past nine years that she’s been teaching, she’s had an incredible opportunity to touch the lives of the children in her care—and that has taught her something, as well. “My biggest lesson in my work is that we truly don’t know what is going on in some children’s lives, and how much of an impact teachers make on them day in and day out. I’m blessed and thankful I get the opportunity to do that,” she says. Jacobs’s biggest point of pride is, of course, the children—both her own as well as the kids she has taught over the course of her career. “Those kids are something that make me incredibly proud, both as a mother and a teacher. Motherhood and teaching has absolutely made me a better person,” she notes. “I am more patient, loving, compassionate, and understanding than I ever would have been, had I not become a mom or a teacher.” While her son and daughter may still be quite young, Jacobs is determined to set them on a good path and show them the best examples. She also wants them to always know how very much they are loved. As a teacher, she knows how much their early development will shape their futures; and as their mother, she can’t help but want what’s best for them. But balanced with the learning 52 I SOCIAL SLIDELL
is, of course, a whole lot of fun. All of that is something that she hopes they will carry with them into adulthood and into their own families—and in their hearts, long after she’s gone. “I want them to remember always feeling loved and like they were the most special person in the world to me,” says Jacobs of her son Jax, 4, and daughter Palmer, 2. “Every Sunday, we take a family car ride around Slidell. While we’re out, we grab some breakfast to-go and enjoy each other’s company and our breakfast on the road. The kids love it, and it’s become like our own tradition, something that’s really special to us as a family.” Another tradition for the Jacobs is right in their own back yard. “We wanted to teach our little ones where food comes from and give them a way to learn some responsibility, so my husband built a garden in the backyard, where we all planted some fruits and vegetables,” she explains. “Every night when my husband gets home from work, we go out and check on the garden, water the plants, and pick any that are ready. The kids get so excited watching them grow bigger and their favorite part is picking them.” From the time she leaves the house in the morning until she arrives home at night, Jacobs is a career woman. But 24 hours a day, seven days a week, she is a teacher, a nurse, a cheerleader, a storyteller, a chaser of monsters. She is a mom.

When Caitie Burkes and Tim Barkley met each other 22 years ago in preschool at Grace Memorial, there was no “meet cute” or stars in their eyes. But over the years, as they went through school together and eventually reached high school at Northshore High School, they became friends. It wasn’t until after graduation in 2014, however, that Caitie and Tim finally became something much more. After nearly six years of dating, Tim moved Heaven and Earth to propose to the woman he loved—even though it might not have gone as he’d originally planned it. “Tim had initially planned to propose to me during a trip we had booked to Austin, Texas, but those plans obviously fell through once COVID-19 hit,” says Caitie, a media relations specialist for the UT Health Science Center at Houston who was working as a journalist for the Baton Rouge Business Report at the time, while Tim works as a consulting solutions senior associate for the Houston office of PricewaterhouseCoopers. “Instead, Tim was quarantined in Houston, while I bounced between Baton Rouge and Slidell, so we didn't see each other for nearly two months,” she goes on.

“He planned to come visit me in Baton Rouge the first weekend of May, and we were both really excited to finally see each other for the first time since lockdown. Tim drove in on a Friday night, and he called me as soon as he pulled up to the townhouse where I was living. Having just come back from the grocery store, I was wearing Nike shorts and tennis shoes and clearly had no idea what was coming,” Caitie says with a smile. “He was dressed very nicely, and I think I even said something to the effect of, ‘Oh, you look really nice!’ As the words were coming out of my mouth, Tim dropped down on one knee and said, ‘I couldn't wait any longer to do this,’ pulled out a beautiful diamond engagement ring, and asked me to marry him. It was a complete 180 from Tim's original plan, but honestly, I wouldn't have had it any other way.” Nearly a year later, on April 17, 2021, Caitie walked down the aisle at Garrett Field in Slidell, where the hangar space was transformed into a beautiful wedding venue. Wearing a white A-line dress with embroidery beading along the waistline and a mostly open back, she exchanged vows with Tim as their nine bridesmaids and nine groomsmen stood in attendance. With more than 300 guests looking on, Caitie and Tim became “Mr. and Mrs. Barkley.”

After flipping the ceremony space for the reception, the couple joined their guests for a party to remember. Dining on passed mixed hors d'oeuvres and a buffet-style dinner, everyone ate their fill—and oh, how they celebrated. “Some of our friends got ahold of the cowbell being used by The Wiseguys, our wedding band, and jammed out with it through the night,” Caitie says with a laugh. “It was definitely a party, and it kept going more than five hours after the reception technically ended, as my relatives from Puerto Rico taught some of our friends and Tim's relatives how to salsa,” she goes on before turning to serious. “This day was especially important to me because my grandfather rallied during a two-year battle with cancer to come to the wedding. He stood, tall and proud, to take family photos and was able to enjoy the reception from one of the tables closest to the dance floor with my grandmother by his side. He even stood up to watch me walk down the aisle. His presence there meant the world to me then; and it does even more so now, considering that he passed away on July 6. It's a memory I'll cherish forever.” Ready to start their honeymoon, the Barkleys left the next day for South Beach, where they spent five days before coming back home to start their lives as man and wife, ready to spend the next 20 years—and the next after that—together as one.

Whether you consider yourself a Classic, Traditional or Contemporary dresser, we’re convinced that what matters most, is that the garment we assist you with becomes a part of you. In a world of cookie cutter clothing, LOPEZ stands ready to design your next garment and become your clothier of choice.
