member of Sirens of the Sea for nine years, serving as President in 2019, 2020, and again in 2024. She describes her role as the “Mama of the organization,” focusing on building relationships, supporting members, and managing events and finances. One of her most memorable events is the sold-out Game Night fundraiser the Sirens co-hosted with Maidens in Pink Stilettos last year. Emceed by local legend Jack Robertson, aka “Big Earl,” the event benefited local charities.

She is also a proud member of the Order of Disorder, a fun-loving, rule-breaking Mardi Gras krewe known for its extravagant floats and ever-changing themes. More importantly, the group is dedicated to helping others, actively supporting Mary’s Shelter in Elberta.

Now, Shelia is launching a new nonprofit krewe, Krewe de Sol (Greek for Sun Goddess). Known as the Sol Sisters, this organization will focus on helping local families and organizations in need, with more community involvement planned for late spring.

For more information about Krewe de Sol, email krewedelsol@gmail.com, find them on Facebook (Krewe de Sol) or call 205.862.8090.

From healthcare to Mardi Gras, Shelia is a dedicated leader always finding ways to support, uplift, and celebrate those around her.

The inaugural SHOW Baldwin Parade of Possibilities brought joy and excitement to the community. Special needs and disabled children and adults participated in a colorful parade, featuring decorated wagons, adaptive strollers, golf carts, and bikes. Beads and throws were provided, and a special needs-friendly Joy Service followed, creating a day of celebration, inclusivity, and community spirit.

Queen Stephanie Knight

“I always say—parading is the most fun I’ve had since I was seven on Christmas morning!”

After 22 years in Atlanta, where I raised my family and lost my husband to cancer, moving to the Gulf Coast meant leaving behind my friends and community. Sirens of the Sea has given me the community and friendship I left behind in Atlanta, and for that, I am truly grateful.

Since joining in 2019, I’ve served on the board every year, handling publicity, building the website, and taking on leadership roles—from Board Member to Queen. In our krewe, those who wear the crown earn it through dedication.

If I had to describe my reign as Queen in three words, they would be Beautiful, Generous, and Grateful. We recently held the Queen’s Luncheon, the official Mardi Gras kickoff, and my Siren sisters brought my theme to life beautifully, making it a truly magical event. My chosen charity, the Sirens of the Sea Scholarship Fund, has supported female seniors at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach High Schools for over a decade, and I am proud to contribute to such a meaningful cause. Above all, I am the most thankful Queen—nobody throws a classy, beautiful, and unforgettable celebration quite like the Sirens of the Sea, and when it’s in your honor, you truly feel loved. -Queen Stephanie

Founded in 2002, Sirens of the Sea is Orange Beach’s first all-female Mardi Gras krewe. What began with five friends has grown into a thriving society that celebrates together while giving back to the community. The Sirens enjoyed Mardi Gras alongside their guests with a beautiful ball held at Perdido Beach Resort. New member applications open in April for the following year.

How does your bank stay actively involved in the local community?

We believe in supporting causes that our bankers are passionate about, empowering them to make a meaningful impact. Our involvement spans a wide range of organizations and events across the county, including Kiwanis Club, Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival, Annual National Shrimp Festival, Ducks Unlimited, and more.

What makes your banking team unique, and how do you build strong customer relationships?

What makes our team unique is our bankers' ability and passion for building relationships—not just with our customers, but also with each other. We truly enjoy working together and value the connections we create.

Was Mardi Gras especially meaningful for a member of your team this year?

Our very own Jodi Holland served as President of the Order of Mystic Magnolias (O.O.M.M.) in Fairhope! Also, my first visit to Fairhope was as a college student during Mardi Gras in 1999. It was such a unique experience in an amazing small town that I knew instantly I wanted to live here one day. Twenty-two years ago, I made that dream a reality.

Beyond honoring traditions

Being local is about more than just an address. As your friends and neighbors, we live here, we work here, and we celebrate here. Those types of timehonored financial values might not be something you’d expect from a bank, but it’s what you can expect from us. Banking Beyond Expectation.

ORDER OF DISORDER

This fun-loving, rule-breaking Mardi Gras krewe is known for its extravagant floats and imaginative themes. The group is also dedicated to giving back to the community.

The theme of this year’s ball was Going to the Chapel, complete with wedding vow renewals, a surprise proposal, and even an impromptu wedding. In true krewe fashion, the Queen caught the bouquet—and just like that, she and her King were crowned!

SERGEANT BRYAN JOHNSON

In 2023, Sergeant Bryan Johnson of the Orange Beach Police Department, decided to take his passion for outdoor, open flame grilling to the next level, competing in the World Food Championships Tailgate Challenge. To take on the World Food Championship qualifier, Johnson needed a team. He approached Orange Beach Police Chief Steve Brown to borrow the department’s disaster relief cooking trailer, then recruited fellow officers. Sergeants Joey Brown and Carl Bradley joined as the PR guys, while SST Major Nall assisted with cooking and prep. In 2024, Coastal Resources employee Brad Johnson also joined the team.

Now known as The Grill Sergeants, the team quickly became a fan favorite, winning People’s Choice at the World Food Championships Tailgate Challenge three years in a row. Their secret? “Great food and having fun talking to visitors,” says Johnson. Bryan’s signature dish? Pulled pork!

Johnson’s passion for competitive grilling has earned him multiple local awards, including:

• Three-time People’s Choice Champion at the Tailgate Chef’s Challenge – a World Food Championships Qualifier (2023, 2024, 2025), partnered with Brad Johnson

• Runner-up at the 2025 Tailgate Chef’s Challenge, partnered with Brad Johnson

• 2024 BBQ & Blues Cook-off (Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event) – People’s Choice Winner

• 2025 BBQ & Blues Cook-off (Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event) – 3rd Place People’s Choice Winner and 8th Overall Combined out of 30 teams

Beyond competitions, The Grill Sergeants have become a staple at local events, cooking for school tailgates, community gatherings, and charity events. Johnson laughs at how fitting the team’s name is—after all, they’re not running a restaurant, just officers bringing people together through food.

One of his most meaningful experiences was cooking a 350-pound whole hog for 400 soldiers in Nashville. A friend donated the hog, and Johnson spent 24 hours preparing it—a small price to pay for giving back to those who serve.

In addition to his role in law enforcement and competitive grilling, Johnson has spent the past seven years directing traffic at Island Church. The role has allowed him to build relationships with the community, describing the church as “home” and its members as always willing to help each other.

A partnership with Paris Ace Hardware began when he was building an outdoor kitchen. A store manager took notice and invited him to assist with grilling demonstrations. Since then, Johnson has been cooking for special sales events and holiday promotions, testing the store’s grill lines and cooking products.

Johnson dreams of starting a food truck and teaching his kids the art of open-fire cooking. In the meantime, his focus is on winning a qualifier to compete at the World Food Championships on Team Alabama.

DAPHNE

ANGIE WEST Pastry Chef

Growing up in Southern Illinois, I spent my childhood in the kitchen with my mom and MawMaw, two of the sweetest women who inspired my passion for food. I’ve loved baking since childhood, though my career began in healthcare, caring for others for nearly 10 years.

Creating my children’s elaborate birthday cakes led me to start a small cake business, but I soon realized I wanted more than being the local cake lady.

My journey took 700 miles, years of self-training, and hands-on learning to get where I am today.

As Pastry Chef at Jesse’s in Magnolia Springs, I’m able to channel my creativity and passion into the pastry world, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.

I put my heart and soul into my creations in the hopes that others can feel what I put into them. –Chef Angie

JACKSON GAINEY Pastry Chef

I began my culinary journey at 16 and, after graduating from culinary school, became assistant pastry chef at Bacchanalia, one of Atlanta’s most celebrated restaurants, training under Michelin-starred Pastry Chef Carla Tomasko. I later worked at Highlands Bar & Grill, Bottega, and Chez Fonfon under James Beard Award winning Chef Frank Stitt, then developed pastry programs for Vintage Hospitality Group. I’ve helped open five successful restaurants and remain dedicated to my craft with passion and creativity.

After moving to Pensacola, I received a call from Jesse’s just days later. Now serving as the pastry chef at Jesse’s on the Bay, I also work closely with Executive Chef Randy Harris, training new employees and ensuring an unforgettable guest experience.

Passionate about both people and pastries, I consider myself a “dessert chef,” crafting interactive, one-of-a-kind desserts alongside my assistant, Anna, to elevate the Jesse’s experience.

When you love your food, you love your people. When you love the people, you create an unforgettable experience.

We joined the Mystic Order of Shiners in 2017 after moving to the Alabama Coast in 2016 upon retiring from the Seattle area. Looking for a way to meet new friends, we were drawn to the Shiners because it is uniquely a couples’ krewe. Over the past eight years, we have served in various roles within the organization, ultimately rising to the honor of King and Queen.

Though our krewe is limited in size, it boasts a diverse and multigenerational membership, with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Through this amazing group, we have built lasting friendships and enjoy the incredible energy that comes from bringing everyone together.

The Shiners host multiple social events throughout the year, welcoming friends to join in the fun. Our season culminates in our spectacular Mardi Gras Ball, an exclusive celebration for members and their invited guests. As stated in our bylaws and Constitution, our primary mission is simple: Have Fun!

It has been an honor and privilege to serve the Mystic Order of Shiners as King and Queen. We look forward to expanding our circle of friends and creating many more unforgettable memories.

Let the good times roll!” -King Stephen & Queen Judy

The Shiners, the oldest existing Mardi Gras Order on Pleasure Island, upheld their rich tradition as Baldwin County’s longest-running parading group. Known for their bold spirit, they proudly led the Fat Tuesday Parade in Gulf Shores. The celebration continued with a lively ball at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center, honoring the legacy of this legendary organization.

After struggling to start a family, IVF blessed them with twin boys, Sam and Jones (3.5 years old), who thrive in the fastpaced football world. They love Detroit Lions games but can’t wait to return to Alabama’s beaches in the offseason. Their newest addition, Miller Kate, arrived in December 2024, stealing everyone’s hearts—especially Sam’s.

Through it all, Dan has been Mackenzie’s rock, supporting Alpha-Lit while balancing his NFL career. “He helps with latenight pickups and tough setups, even though football keeps him away in the fall,” she says. “Once the offseason starts, he’s all in.”

BALANCING MOTHERHOOD & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Being a working mom hasn’t always been easy, but Mackenzie knows it’s shaping her children’s future. “Sometimes I feel guilty for working,” she admits, “but I’ve realized having a passion outside of motherhood benefits everyone. I hope my kids grow up knowing they can achieve anything through hard work.” She wants them to remember presence. “I want them to look back and remember the fun and experiences we shared.”

Her biggest lesson? Slowing down. “With football and constant moves, we never know what’s next, but our kids don’t care. They just want to be with us, and that keeps us grounded.”

ALPHA-LIT: A BRIGHT IDEA TURNED NATIONAL SUCCESS

When Mackenzie struggled to find marquee letters for her wedding, she never imagined her idea would grow into 180+ Alpha-Lit locations nationwide. “I was just looking for something to do, then BOOM!” she laughs. “I owe so much to my Dad, the smartest businessman I know.”

The best part? Seeing women thrive. “Many of our franchise owners were able to leave their jobs because of Alpha-Lit. That’s why I love this company so much.”

GIVING BACK IN BALDWIN COUNTY

New to Orange Beach, the Skippers are committed to giving back. Dan has worked with Gulf Shores High School football and plans to assist Orange Beach High School. Alpha-Lit proudly supports local charities and events.

Mackenzie’s partnership with Kristi Brunick, a former elementary school teacher, ensures Alpha-Lit Baldwin County delivers top-tier service. “We’re two families running a business because we love it, and we know you will too.”

Despite all she’s accomplished, Mackenzie hesitates to call herself a ‘Super Mom.’ “Some days, I don’t feel super at all. When my husband does something great on the field, he has an entire stadium cheering for him. At times, it’s hard to feel “super” compared to that. But hearing my boys say, “Mommy, I love you,” means more than a stadium full of fans.

To every mom out there—you are super.”

Queen Laura Langston

In 2016, while walking down Clubhouse Drive with my husband, admiring the incredible Mardi Gras floats, we came across a stunning two-story float in hot pink and black, adorned with pink feathers. The sound of laughter and joy spilling from the first floor was so contagious that I knew I wanted to be part of that fun, vibrant atmosphere. The sisterhood shared by the women on that float left a lasting impression on me, inspiring me to join Maidens in Pink Stilettos (MIPS).

Since then, I’ve remained involved because of the amazing friendships I’ve built and the unforgettable experiences we’ve shared. When encouraging someone to join a krewe, I always emphasize that each krewe is unique, just like each person. Not everyone can walk in the same pair of shoes! That’s why I recommend attending a krewe social event, mingling with members, and observing how they engage with newcomers—you’ll know when you’ve found the right fit and where you can bloom where you’re planted.

Reflecting on my time as Queen, three words come to mind: Honor, Grateful, and Excitement. It has been an incredible honor to represent this organization, and I am deeply grateful for the friendships, support, and warm welcome I received when I first joined. And honestly, who wouldn’t be excited about being Queen? It’s a once-in-alifetime experience that I will cherish forever! -Queen Laura

Each year, I took on new roles, learning and growing. This experience inspires me to encourage others to join—sharing talents, building friendships, and embracing the joy of Mardi Gras. “I joined Treasures of the Isle in 2018 after attending a ball with my wife, invited by my son’s father-in-law. We had a blast, and I quickly realized TOI was more than a social group—it’s a community. Beyond the fun, TOI gives back, supporting veterans, fundraising, and hosting goodwill parades. I love the friendships, events, and opportunities to make a difference. My advice to those interested in joining—get involved, enjoy the experience, and have fun!” -King Fred

The Treasures of the Isle embraces the spirit of Mardi Gras by celebrating with friends, a festive parade, and an annual ball. But their mission goes beyond revelry—they are also dedicated to making a positive impact in the community through meaningful contributions.

Caroline Ray, 25, was born and raised in South Alabama, the daughter of Andrew and Alison Ray. She graduated from Foley High School in 2018 before earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of South Alabama in 2022. Currently in her third year at The Harrison College of Pharmacy at Auburn University, she is on track to graduate with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May 2026. Caroline was honored to represent the Mystics of Pleasure for its 25th anniversary and is thrilled to serve as Queen for the 2024-2025 Mardi Gras season.

“Being selected as Queen is an incredible honor. I knew my friends and family would be excited for me, and I couldn’t wait to share this unforgettable experience with them. Mardi Gras has always been a passion of mine, and getting to experience this season with my father by my side has meant everything to me. I hope to make both my family and the Mystics society proud.” -Queen Caroline

Mystics of Pleasure celebrated with the theme “Making Mardi Gras Great for 25 Years.” Their parade featured 17 stunning floats, designed by Barth Brothers, Patty Keenan, and members, followed by a lively anniversary ball at the Orange Beach Event Center. YEARS STRONG 25

On a picture-perfect February evening on Pleasure Island, a group of visionaries gathered with an idea—one that would forever change Mardi Gras on the Alabama Gulf Coast. And so, the Mystics of Pleasure was born, the island’s first nighttime Mardi Gras parading society.

In their first year, they didn’t just launch a parade; they hosted a full-scale formal Mardi Gras ball, setting the stage for what would become one of the region’s most anticipated celebrations. Now, 25 years later, the Mystics of Pleasure parade rolls out the Saturday before Fat Tuesday, dazzling crowds with 25 floats, marching bands, classic cars, fire trucks, and other Krewes. A signature feature is The Cavalry, riders

dressed in authentic costumes roaring through the streets on Harley-Davidsons. These traditions, along with the Queen of the Mystics procession, have been central to the organization’s celebrations since the beginning.

This year’s theme, “Making Mardi Gras Great for 25 Years,” reflects their dedication to keeping the celebration alive. With tons of beads, Moon Pies, stuffed animals, and toys tossed into the crowd, it remains one of the most anticipated Mardi Gras parades on the Gulf Coast.

RECOGNIZED MYSTICS OF PLEASURE AND KREWE DE SWAN FOR 4 YEARS OF SUPPORT PROVIDING TOYS FOR TOTS IN SOUTH BALDWIN COUNTY.

The Mystics of Pleasure trace their inspiration to Mobile, the birthplace of American Carnival. Influenced by historic Mystic Societies, their founders blended tradition with island culture. Conceived over drinks at Zeke’s Down Under Bar, the Krewe was built on three core principles: Host a high-energy parade, throw an elaborate ball, and serve top-shelf drinks— because quality matters.

Since their first parade in 2000, the Mystics have grown from 18 Harley-Davidson riders and 12 floats to over 250 members and more than 25 floats, proving their commitment to making Mardi Gras unforgettable.

BEYOND THE BEADS: A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

The Mystics of Pleasure are deeply committed to philanthropy through the Benevolent Fund of Baldwin

County, established in 2010 to share Christ’s love with those in need. They support the community through volunteer work and financial aid, stepping up during disasters like Hurricane Sally, providing hot meals and relief to those affected.

Their impact extends beyond disaster relief. The Mystics support numerous charities, including Lunches for Learning (Baldwin County), The Backpack Program (Gulf Shores/Orange Beach),

and the Gulf Shores Methodist Food Bank, all of which provide essential resources to those in need. They also assist with cancer support for local patients and collect thousands of can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, helping families with children undergoing medical treatment.

One of their standout initiatives is the Taste of the Island event, which last year alone provided 300 toys and 17 bicycles for local children in need. The Mystics have also partnered with OneBlood for blood drives, helping to supply blood for the military. In past years, they have collaborated with venues like Flora-Bama and The Wharf to host these drives. OneBlood is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) community asset dedicated to providing safe, available, and affordable blood. Another meaningful partnership is with the Troy Ellis Foundation, which supports youth athletics by improving facilities, providing equipment, and increasing access to sports programs.

As the Mystics of Pleasure celebrate 25 years of Mardi Gras magic, their mission remains clear: bringing joy, entertainment, and a spirit of giving to the Gulf Coast. Through tradition, revelry, and heartfelt philanthropy, they aren’t just making Mardi Gras great—they’re making it legendary.

1 yellow bell pepper, diced small

1 green bell pepper, diced small

1 small red onion, diced small

1 lb. raw shrimp, peeled and deveined

3 teaspoons Creole seasoning, divided

12 oz. dry cavatappi pasta

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 cups heavy cream

1 cup Parmesan or Romano cheese, grated

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/4 cup pasta water

1/2 cup roasted red peppers, chopped Green onions, thinly sliced for garnish

Savor Savor

DIRECTIONS:

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook for 5 minutes, until it begins to brown. Add bell peppers and onions, cooking for 8 minutes until softened. Stir in shrimp and ½ teaspoon of Creole seasoning, then cook for 8-10 minutes, until the shrimp are fully cooked. Transfer the sausage, vegetables, and shrimp to a bowl and set aside.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add dry pasta and cook for 8 minutes. Before draining, reserve ¼ cup of pasta water and set it aside. Drain the pasta and set it aside as well.

In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 2 minutes, whisking constantly. Gradually whisk in heavy cream and increase the heat until it begins to bubble. Cook for 1 minute, then remove from heat. Whisk in cheese, the remaining 2½ teaspoons of Creole seasoning, and smoked paprika, stirring until smooth.

Return the sausage, vegetables, and shrimp to the skillet with the sauce. Add drained pasta, reserved pasta water, and roasted red peppers, stirring until well combined. Cook over medium-low heat for 5-8 minutes, until everything is heated through.

Serve hot, garnished with thinly sliced green onions. Enjoy!
