What do you find most rewarding about your work as a healthcare professional?
I am dedicated to helping my patients lead healthy lives. By building personal connections and working collaboratively, I strive to provide comprehensive and compassionate care.
What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?
I was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare following a sports injury in my youth. The doctor that took care of me was the only one that could relieve the pain and uncertainty of the moment and I wanted to do that for others. To that end, I find providing clarity and comfort to be one of the most rewarding aspects of our calling.
What do you find most rewarding about your work as a healthcare professional?
The impact I have on someone's life.... Whether it is simple as a cold or a more complex issue, helping them along the way makes my day. I also enjoy getting to know my patients and their families.

Leading Innovation in Cardiology Care
DR. BRIAN DEARING
Brian D. Dearing, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, is a distinguished leader in clinical and interventional cardiology, specializing in advanced cardiovascular care. Originally from Mandeville, Louisiana, Dr. Dearing earned his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans after completing his Bachelor of Science at LSU Baton Rouge. He trained at the renowned Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, where he completed his internship, residency, and fellowships in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Dearing joined Cardiology Associates in 1998.
Board-certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Internal Medicine, he specializes in coronary and peripheral vascular interventions. His dedication to clinical
research has positioned him at the forefront of his field, pioneering therapies for complex cardiovascular conditions and contributing to peer-reviewed medical journals.
Dr. Dearing’s expertise and compassionate care provide patients with innovative, personalized treatment options. Through research, education, and practice, he remains committed to improving the lives of those affected by cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Dearing shares, “My journey into cardiology was shaped by exceptional mentors whose dedication and expertise inspired me. Working alongside them, I saw the dynamic nature of cardiology, constantly evolving with new technology and treatments that revolutionize patient care. The critical
role cardiologists play in providing timely interventions fueled my passion for acute care. This combination of mentorship, innovation, and the intensity of cardiology solidified my desire to pursue this specialty.”
For Dr. Dearing, being involved in healthcare is tremendously rewarding, allowing him to improve lives and strengthen communities. “By providing care, education, and support, my team and I foster healthier lifestyles. Witnessing patient recovery reinforces the vital role healthcare plays in shaping a brighter future.”
“The most rewarding moment of my career has been my work with Cardiology Associates, where teamwork fostered excellence in patient care. Collaborating with dedicated professionals, we developed a comprehensive STEMI treatment program, improving response times and patient outcomes. This initiative has made a lasting impact, serving as a model for other institutions.”
Dr. Dearing emphasizes that effective leadership in cardiology relies on collaboration, communication, and respect for diverse expertise. “A successful leader fosters teamwork among nurses, cardiologists,
and support staff, valuing each team member’s insights. This collaborative approach enhances decision-making and ensures comprehensive, effective care, ultimately improving patient outcomes and advancing the standard of care.”
To foster collaboration and innovation, Dr. Dearing notes that “it’s crucial to prioritize patients at the center of our care. Open communication among team members ensures seamless transitions and better outcomes. We also value the diverse
perspectives of new team members, as their experiences contribute to improving care processes and benefiting patients.”
Cardiology faces challenges, including a national shortage of cardiologists, leading to longer wait times and reduced access to care. “To address this, we’ve involved nurse practitioners and physician assistants to enhance efficiency. Additionally, integrating AI in diagnostics and treatment will be crucial for improving care and advancing cardiovascular health.”

Shannon
+ David
Thepath Shannon Hesse and David Smart took to the altar is a testament to how some connections are destined to come full circle. After meeting in high school, the couple began dating when David and his cousin drove Shannon to Bama Bound in 1989. Decades later, they rekindled their romance, culminating in a heartfelt proposal on their boat in Magnolia River, where David reminded Shannon of their first meaningful conversation 34 years earlier.
Shannon, now Shannon Hesse Smart, is the broker and co-owner of the newly established Sun Coast Properties, while David owns and operates Streamline Environmental.
The couple’s intimate wedding took place on the lawn of their newly built home by Magnolia River, with only close family in attendance. Shannon’s daughters and David’s children stood by their sides, making the ceremony both deeply personal and meaningful.
Shannon wore a form-fitting lace gown with a nude liner, chosen with the enthusiastic approval of her daughters. The wedding colors, moss green and gold, beautifully complemented the natural riverside setting.
The couple’s grand entrance was unforgettable, as they arrived by boat with their children to the iconic opening of Prince’s Let’s Go Crazy. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate this thing called life…” As Shannon described, “It was perfect!”
Following the ceremony, friends joined them for a reception described by their caterer as “just a good, old-fashioned lawn party.” Southern charm was abundant, with guests enjoying fried oysters, shrimp, okra, and other delights. Dessert included a three-tier chocolate and vanilla cake with buttercream and cookies & cream mousse, along with Shannon’s close friend Staci Niemeyer’s signature praline banana pudding, which was a hit.
Shannon and David plan to honeymoon this spring. For now, they are embracing life together in their new home on Magnolia River in Magnolia Springs.
Their wedding was more than a celebration of love—it was a reminder of the beauty in life’s simplest and sweetest moments.

Jodi + Kevin
details
Jodi Keating, VP and Community Banker at Merchants & Marine Bank in Fairhope, and Kevin Holland, VP at Memorial Health Systems in Gulfport, MS, tied the knot in a wedding filled with love, family, and perseverance.
During their first date in spring 2023 at OSO in Orange Beach, “We both knew that evening something special was happening,” Jodi recalls. After dating for just over seven months, Kevin proposed at sunset on their favorite swing overlooking Biloxi Bay. As they celebrated, dolphins appeared in the bay—a touching “God wink” that made the moment unforgettable.
Their wedding and reception took place last fall at The Balcony on Church Street in downtown Fairhope. The ceremony was truly a family affair, with Kevin’s sons, Jackson and Hayes, his daughter-in-law Aubrey, and Jodi’s children, Tony, Lindsay, Elizabeth, and Justin, standing by their sides as they united their families.
The road to the wedding was anything but smooth. Just weeks before the big day, Jodi endured two major surgeries—a broken kneecap and a perforated appendix. Determined to move forward, she leaned on the support of family and friends.
Her son walked her down the aisle, and she even managed to sway on the dance floor during the reception.
The flowers for the ceremony and reception held special meaning, as they were thoughtfully arranged by the bride’s sisters, Holly Maynard and Debra Mullins, along with her close-knit group of friends, affectionately called "The Nest"—Sherry Sullivan, Laura English, Dianne Herzog, and Lee Teumer. Jodi shares, "My dear friend Mary Megan Parker, the absolute BEST wedding planner EVER, not only helped with the flowers but also took care of all the coordination details. She made everything seamless!"
Though their original honeymoon plans to Gatlinburg, TN, were postponed due to Jodi's surgeries and recovery, the couple enjoyed a restful week in the 30A-Destin area and looks forward to a “do-over” on their first anniversary.
Now residing in Ocean Springs, MS, Jodi commutes to Fairhope for work, cherishing the faith that brought her and Kevin together. “Finding each other later in life is a blessing,” Jodi says. “We trust that everything happens for a reason.”
Roxanna Rose Hare and Michael John McConnell III were introduced by mutual friends while attending the University of Alabama. After graduating in 2019, their connection deepened, beginning with a boat ride to dinner at Flippers in Orange Beach. Four years later, Michael proposed on a perfect day in Fairhope, starting with a romantic picnic by the Bay and culminating in a surprise family dinner that evening.
Their February wedding at Steelwood Country Club was a breathtaking celebration. The couple chose a navy and champagne color palette, combining timeless elegance with heartfelt personal touches. Nearby lodges offered a cozy weekend retreat for their families and wedding party, adding an intimate feel to the festivities. Roxanna added a sentimental touch by wearing her mother’s redesigned wedding gown to the rehearsal dinner. For the ceremony, she stunned in an ivory fit-and-flare dress featuring a lace and sequined train. The couple’s yellow lab, Winston, stole the show, making a memorable appearance in a bow tie for photos.
The wedding day was a beautiful bluebird day, much to everyone’s delight, as the couple had prepared for the typical February cold. Guests arrived at the lakeside ceremony via trolley, where a violin quartet played under a breathtaking sunset. Roxanna’s hometown preacher, Brother Johnny, who baptized her as a child, officiated the ceremony. Scripture was read from her father’s cherished Bible—a well-worn testament to his faith, and the spiritual leader he has always been for Roxanna and his family.
The reception was lively and joyful, with the Blanton Reed Band energizing the dance floor. The groom’s cake showcased Michael’s love of the outdoors with a tree-bark design and antlers, while the bride’s cake featured four tiers of vanilla with buttercream and floral accents.
The evening ended as the band played “Sweet Home Alabama” during a spirited send-off featuring crimson and white shakers. After honeymooning in Sedona, Arizona, the couple now resides in Daphne, Alabama. Michael works as a custom home builder, and Roxanna is a physician assistant. Their wedding was a heartfelt celebration of love, faith, and unforgettable memories.

Megan Dakota +
Megan Fazekas, Director of Marketing at Bluewater Exteriors, and Dakota Harcrow, a server at CoastAL in Orange Beach, tied the knot in a breathtaking beach ceremony at Inlet Beach, Florida. A reception dinner followed at Amici 30A, celebrating their love with friends and family in a perfect coastal setting.
In high school, Megan and Dakota walked the same halls but moved in different circles—he was a football player, and she was a member of the band and color guard. After graduating a year apart and going their separate ways, their paths crossed again in 2019 through shared college classes and a mutual friend. Though they briefly lost touch, they reconnected in early 2020, just before the pandemic, and spent lockdown together, strengthening their bond.
After over three years of dating, Dakota proposed in style. Megan, under the impression she was heading to a girls’ dinner, found herself at the end of a pier adorned with rose petals. Dakota was waiting there with a romantic setup, complete with Megan’s sister capturing the special moment.
Their families, many of whom traveled from northern Alabama, joined them afterward for a surprise dinner, making the day even more memorable.
Megan wore an elegant satin sheath gown with an exposed bustier, beaded train, and button detail, perfectly complementing the wedding’s light blue, green, champagne, and white palette inspired by the beautiful Gulf waters.
With five attendants on each side and loved ones who traveled from as far as California, the couple celebrated their union with a weekend full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Their two-tier wedding cake, crafted by Megan’s aunt, was simple yet romantic, adorned with roses from the bouquets.
The couple currently resides in Foley and looks forward to their honeymoon at Excellence Riviera Cancun planned for their first anniversary—a celebration of their enduring love as they continue a beautiful journey together.
The Evening for the Estuaries was an unforgettable night of live music, drinks, oysters and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The event, held in support of local conservation efforts, also featured a silent auction and awards. Held at the beautiful Coastal Arts Center on Wolf Bay, funds raised will be used for manatee outreach, restoration efforts, and more.

Aqualyn Kennedy
As a college freshman, Aqualyn was shocked when a stroke struck her out of the blue. Initially misdiagnosed, she endured two days of waiting before discovering a myxoma in her heart, leading to life-saving surgery. Diagnosed with lupus, Aqualyn became a passionate advocate for stroke survivors and those with preexisting conditions, serving as an ambassador for the American Heart Association for the past 18 years.
What advice do you have for someone who has just been diagnosed with a heart related issue? Where should they start? Your diagnosis doesn’t define your lifespan or quality of life. For 100 years, the American Heart Association has helped millions live longer, healthier lives through research. Take charge of your heart health by joining a support group or volunteering through the “You're the Cure” page. Share what you learn with family, friends, and others to inspire and support those around you.
How do you stay motivated to prioritize your heart health daily? Are there tools or habits that help?
My motivation comes from remembering how good I feel when I make healthy choices—and lots of prayer, thanking God for my health. I aim to start each day with exercise and a heart-healthy breakfast, though I’m still working on consistency. Strive to lean toward healthier choices most of the time, giving yourself grace to protect your mental health. Every day is a new opportunity to be better.
Carter Morgan
Born with aortic stenosis, Carter’s annual check-ups showed no issues until age 20, when a routine visit revealed a critical gradient and aneurysm. Dr. Peter “Trey” Pluscht III of Cardio-Thoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates with Infirmary Health, the area’s only team specializing in the Ross Procedure, performed the complex operation. This procedure replaced Carter’s aortic valve with his pulmonary valve, allowing him to avoid blood thinners and live a healthy, active life.
What role did your healthcare team play in your recovery?
Dr. Pluscht’s team and Cardiology Associates were incredible, making me feel completely confident and comfortable throughout the entire process. Their compassion and expertise made a difficult experience so much easier to face and overcome.
Do you have a message of hope for others who may feel scared or overwhelmed by their diagnosis? Stay positive and lean on friends and family. With the right care and support, you’ll get through it and come out even better on the other side.
Earl Hadley
Earl Hadley finished a pickleball game and sat down to wait for the next round when his heart suddenly went into cardiac arrest. The Fairhope Recreation Center staff quickly grabbed an AED and rushed to assist. Dr. Steven Wittmer, who was working out nearby, saw the staff with the AED and immediately came to help. After three shocks and 47 compressions, Earl regained a heartbeat. Remarkably, he had no warning signs or symptoms of heart disease.
What role did your healthcare team play in your recovery?
I woke up in the Thomas Hospital emergency room, hearing an ER nurse ask, “Earl, Earl, is that you?” Dr. Dearing explained the bad news—my widowmaker artery was 100% blocked—but the good news was Dr. Pluscht could operate that day. I received the best care I’ve ever experienced from the nurses, doctors, and professionals at Thomas Hospital.
Who were the key people in your support system during your heart disease journey?
My family, friends, church, and healthcare professionals were key supports during my heart disease journey. Their love, encouragement, and guidance, including Cardiac Rehab, were essential to my recovery.
Do you have a message of hope for others who may feel scared or overwhelmed by their diagnosis?
Put your faith in God and allow the doctors and medical staff to do what they are trained to do.
Matthew Conway
What Matthew thought was severe "heartburn" turned out to be a heart attack. His wife, a nurse practitioner, acted quickly by calling 911, and EMTs kept him alive. After an ambulance ride, a shock, and a heart cath, he left with a stent and a CHF diagnosis.
What role did your healthcare team play in your recovery? Cardiology Associates and Thomas Hospital saved my life twice, providing incredible care last March and again last July when I needed three additional stents.
Do you have a message of hope for others who may feel scared or overwhelmed by their diagnosis?
My faith has been the bedrock of this new season in my life. At first, I had a “poor me” attitude. Now, I see this as a season in my life, and I’m learning to embrace it and its challenges. I’ve found inspiration in an amazing quote by C.H. Spurgeon: “I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock of Ages.” Also, you have got to rely on family and friends. I was blessed with a wife who defines what it means to be a Proverbs 31 wife. She has helped me more than anyone. Finally, don’t be afraid to talk about your diagnosis and the fears it brings. I caused myself a lot of harm after my heart attack by trying to keep everything bottled up and acting as if it hadn’t happened.
In short, faith, family, and friends.

A BUSINESS FULL OF HEART
Shortly after meeting, Sarah and John “Tater” Harris fell in love with the Orange Beach area while visiting Tater’s home state of Alabama. Drawn to its stunning beaches, exceptional dining, and vibrant community, they chose to make it their home, where they now enjoy a wonderful life with their son, Jay.
Their business, Gulf Coast Rental Co., offers a wide range of products to enhance the Orange Beach experience, from luxury beach chairs and umbrellas to Polaris Slingshots, Jeeps, pontoon boats, and LSVs for adventure seekers.
Committed to giving back, Gulf Coast Rental Co. actively participates in the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber’s Chamber Champion program, making a significant contribution annually to support local events. They are also members of GUMBO PAC, advocating for infrastructure improvements and environmental preservation.
This year, Gulf Coast Rental Co. is the Signature Sponsor for Baldwin County’s Art for Heart Gala, with Tater and Sarah
serving as event chairs. Their involvement stems from a personal connection: “We joined the ELT board after Hunter and Ginger Harrelson’s invitation. Reflecting on our families’ heart issues made us realize how meaningful this cause is. Supporting the Gala helps fund CPR kits, training, and AEDs for those who need them most. It’s a way to honor our family’s experience while making a difference in our community.”
The couple hopes the Gala raises awareness about life-saving measures, like equipping charter boats with AEDs and providing schools with CPR kits.
For Sarah and Tater, one standout memory from past Galas is hearing stories of young survivors like Fisher Nelson, whose courage inspires all. This year, the Gala will be held at The Oasis in Orange Beach, a venue that holds special meaning as the place where they were married.

We do good and important work and are a vital part of the community,” she says. “The ability to provide life-saving images and measurements is incredibly rewarding.”

As a working mom, Amanda hopes to instill in her children a strong work ethic, meaningful careers, and a commitment to healthy living.
Brett Cardwell has also dedicated nearly 20 years to providing crucial heart images. Her most rewarding moments come when she detects abnormalities, knowing she helps save lives. Every day, she continues to grow professionally, learning from cardiologists and connecting with patients.
Brett has been married to her husband Pate, an Army veteran and emergency services worker, for almost nine years. Together, they are raising three children—Cadence (14), McCoy (13), and McKenzie (7). She strives to set a strong example for her kids, teaching them the values of hard work and dedication.
Professionally, Brett takes pride in her career and the quality of echocardiograms she provides. Personally, she beams with pride when her children’s kindness is noticed by their teachers and coaches. She hopes they remember her as their biggest cheerleader and source of love.
Outside of work and family, Brett has volunteered with Heart for Athletes, an organization focused on preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest in youth through heart screenings and CPR/AED training. Though her time is limited, she’s grateful to contribute to such an important cause.
The Wharf’s annual Kids Confetti Drop presented by Beachball Properties brought families together to ring in 2025 with bouncy inflatables, face painting, camel rides, a balloon artist, and more. DJ Matt kept the energy high, and the noon confetti explosion was a vibrant highlight. It was a festive celebration filled with fun and colorful memories for all!
