SOCIAL

From the Editor

New year, fresh energy, and a whole lot of excitement—welcome to the first issue of Social Northshore in 2025.

If January was about setting intentions, February is all about celebrating love, leadership, and the heart of our community— literally and figuratively. This month, we’re honored to feature the beautiful wedding of Ashton and Bradley, a stunning celebration of love that reminds us why February is the season of romance. Their special day was filled with meaningful moments, timeless elegance, and the kind of joy that sets the tone for a lifetime together.

But February isn’t just about hearts in a romantic sense—it’s also about heart health and the leaders who make a difference. We’re shining a spotlight on Ms. Joan Coffman, a pillar of our community whose dedication and leadership continue to inspire. And as we recognize the American Heart Association’s Go Red Initiative, we’re reminded of the importance of heart health awareness and advocacy— because taking care of our hearts means taking care of each other.

As we step into this new year, we’re thrilled to keep bringing you the stories that matter—stories of love, strength, and the incredible people shaping the Northshore. Here’s to 2025, a year of celebration, connection, and all the moments that make life beautiful.

A Culture of Caring

FOR ST. TAMMANY HEALTH SYSTEM PRESIDENT AND CEO JOAN COFFMAN, COMMUNITY COMES FIRST

All birthdays are worth celebrating, of course, but St. Tammany Health System had more reason than usual to kick up its heels this past December 1st. That date marked 70 years to the day that the health system’s flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital first opened its doors in Covington, thanks to the tireless efforts of a legion of civic-minded community members who worked for years to get it built.

A lot has changed at the hospital since then, but according to STHS President and CEO Joan Coffman, one vital element has not: the unique bond between the health system and the community that founded it. She remembers that bond from her first stint with the health system, as an X-ray tech in the early

1980s. Since returning to assume leadership in 2018, she has made it a priority to ensure that the health system’s “Culture of Caring,” as she calls it, remains central to everything its 3,000-plus-strong workforce does.

“That, to me, is our secret sauce, and it really boils down to the ‘why’ that motivates our colleagues,” Coffman said. “When you walk the halls at St. Tammany, whether at our flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital or one of our dozens of other facilities, you can see that all of our colleagues put our patients and our community first. That, to me, defines the true Culture of Caring.”

That community-first focus starts at the top – and it extends far outside the hospital and other health system facilities. There is, for example, the Healthier Northshore initiative that Coffman helped found in 2020 and which aligns local community stakeholders who share a common interest in improving local health metrics.

“Through it, we solicited community feedback last fall for a Community Health Needs Assessment. We had a goal of getting 1,000 responses from the community. We ended up with something like 1,400,” she said. “That’s the voice of our community, and it tells us what the community’s needs are and how we can prioritize our work.”

Additionally, Coffman hosts quarterly legislative sessions, where members of the health system’s leadership team and Board of Commissioners hold discussions with local elected leaders and others about community needs.

“We have become very much a trusted advisor for our community legislators,” she said, “and we love that position because we value them as much as they value us.”

St. Tammany Parish Hospital Board Chairman Oliver Hebert, at center with shovel, is surrounded in May 1953 by fellow hospital board members, local politicians from across the Northshore as well as various civic activists for the long-awaited groundbreaking for the hospital. It would open on Dec. 1, 1954, the first structure in what is today St. Tammany Health System.
Nurse Emma M. Porche Wetherbee, center, is photographed alongside some of St. Tammany Parish Hospital’s other first nurses shortly after the Covington facility’s 1954 opening.

Aside from her responsibilities at the health system and as a member of the American Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees, Coffman is active with an array of local nonprofits and community organizations. That includes serving on the Executive Committee of the Northshore Business Council, as chair of the St. Tammany Economic Development Corporation board and a member of its Northshore Healthscape initiative, as well as a board member for United Way of Southeast Louisiana, to name a few.

“I see that not only as a way to give back to the community but to stay plugged into it,” she said, noting that colleagues at all levels of the health system are similarly active in various community causes.

“This organization in the past 70 years has taken an active effort to become authentically inculcated in the very fabric of our community,” Coffman added. “And, so, by virtue of that, our colleagues just view the community as an extended family. So, when you think about our Culture of Caring, it’s not just within the four walls. It’s throughout the region, and certainly our community is a big part of that.”

Mula LewisMadeleine SUPER

Madeleine Mula Lewis radiates passion in everything she does—whether it’s co-owning Salad Station Mandeville with her husband, Griffin, raising their three incredible children, or pouring her heart into her faith. For Madeleine, life is a beautiful balance of chaos, purpose, and love. At 37, she’s thriving in both her professional and personal worlds, guided by her deep connection to God and her family.

Madeleine and Griffin have been married for 14 years, building a life centered on their shared values and faith. Their three children—Liam, 12; Hudson, 10; and Quinn, 8—are uniquely gifted and fill their home with energy and joy. Liam excels in athletics, playing for the Knights Baseball team and competing in basketball and football. Hudson has found her passion for volleyball at Hardy’s Volleyball Academy, where a dedicated coach has inspired her growth on and off the court. And then there’s Quinn, the firecracker who lights up every room she enters, embodying the bold, social spirit of her family. Their golden doodle, Roux, rounds out the crew as the beloved “favorite child.”

MOM

SUPERMOM

Being a working mom is a calling Madeleine embraces wholeheartedly. She admits to juggling a lot, often with 987 metaphorical plates spinning, but her boundless energy and people-oriented nature help her thrive. Setting boundaries has been a recent milestone, allowing her to prioritize her husband and children while still excelling in her business.

As co-owner of Salad Station Mandeville, Madeleine thrives in the fast-paced world of fresh, full, clean, and kind dining. The “pay by the pound” concept offers guests a fun and friendly experience, and Madeleine takes pride in creating a space where people feel welcome and cared for. While she’s relatively new to the food industry, her SERVSAFE certification is a badge of honor, symbolizing her commitment to learning every detail of the business from the ground up.

For her, being a working mom isn’t just about balancing—it’s about modeling Biblical alignment and showing her children what it means to live purposefully.

Faith is the cornerstone of Madeleine’s family life. Every morning, they pray together, putting on the full armor of God and jamming out to R-Swift’s “Awesome God.”

These daily moments of connection are a reflection of the values she hopes to instill in her children—love for others, resilience, and gratitude for God’s protection.

Above all, Madeleine wants her children to remember her as someone who loved deeply and cared for people the way Jesus did. Whether it’s through their small traditions or the spontaneous moments when her children offer a comforting touch, Madeleine draws strength and inspiration from her family, striving to be the best mother, wife, and businesswoman she can be.

At Dr. Todd S. STHS CUTS RIBBON ON STATE-OF-THE-ART SAME-DAY SURGERY CENTER

126,000-square-foot, $75 million facility hailed as among the region’s most technologically advanced

[COVINGTON,LA] – The Northshore welcomed the next generation of local healthcare on Tuesday (Dec. 17, 2024) with the grand opening of the new St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center, a $75 million, same-day surgical facility described as the most technologically advanced of its kind in the Gulf South.

Located adjacent to the health system’s Paul D. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion on Louisiana 1085 (Bootlegger Road), the 126,000-square-foot facility was designed with local surgeons’ input to meet the current and future demand for same-day surgeries, which is in turn fueled by technological advances that have expanded the number of procedures available in the 23-hour arena.

“Just more than two weeks ago, on Dec. 1, we celebrated our health system’s storied 70-year past. Today, with the opening of this peerless facility, we celebrate the future,” health system President and CEO Joan Coffman said at a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“This surgery center has long been a strategic goal of ours, and I am brimming with gratitude for all those people –and, trust me, there are a lot of them – who helped us to

once more deliver on our promise of providing worldclass healthcare close to home for our Northshore friends and neighbors.”

In addition to creating more than 100 local jobs, the surgery center’s completion will also open capacity at the health system’s flagship St. Tammany Parish Hospital for more complex surgical cases.

The location of the center, adjacent to the Outpatient Pavilion, augments the health system’s already robust presence along the Highway 21 corridor, creating a true west campus.

Following her remarks, Coffman invited guests to tour the new facility, which includes 12 surgery suites, 24 private pre-op rooms, 18 recovery rooms and 15 rooms with overnight-stay capabilities. They are joined by a host of supporting departments and services including pre-operative and post-operative care, surgical sterilization, imaging, lab, pharmacy, physical therapy, food service, environmental services and more.

“Some buildings are a monument to architecture. This surgery center, which is among the most technologically advanced of its kind in the region, is also a monument to cutting-edge healthcare,” STHS Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrick Torcson said. “From the robotic systems that will assist our surgeons; to the advanced surgical instrument processing equipment installed therein; to the robust IT presence throughout, every square inch of this building incorporates technology and innovation on a scale unmatched in the community.”

Among the procedures to be performed at the center starting in January 2025 will be an array of pediatric and adult general surgeries, including orthopedic and gynecological procedures; hand surgery; ear, nose and throat surgery; breast reconstruction; and many others.

Assisting local surgeons in those procedures will be some of the most state-of-the-art surgical equipment available, including the Da Vinci robotic surgical assistant, which is used in pelvic and urologic surgeries; and the Stryker Mako system, used in knee and hip replacements.

Additionally, all wet areas – including patient bathrooms –are equipped with patented Indigo-Clean lighting, which use visible light to kill a wide variety of viruses and bacteria.

“But it is important to remember that none of this would be possible if not for the human beings behind it all,” health system Vice President of Surgical Services Nancy Ledet said. “For us, that includes a passionate and dedicated surgical team, the members of which played crucial roles in ensuring this new facility not only meets but exceeds the already-high standards of St. Tammany Health System.”

St. Tammany Health Foundation’s Healing Arts Initiative has additionally outfitted the first-floor space with multiple installations, including a large-scale lobby mural by local artist Zac Maras. Other installations feature the work of local artists Cindi Guillot, Inga Falterman and Craig McMillan.

Conveniently located less than two miles south of the health system’s 281-bed acute-care St. Tammany Parish Hospital, the new St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center will employ 123 people when fully staffed. That number will include a round-the-clock presence from the health system’s anesthesiology department.

Clinical capabilities planned for the center and scope of the project were developed according to national best practices for high reliability, efficiency and safety for patients, STHS team members, visitors and vendors.

The new St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center is located at 16282 Louisiana 1085 (Bootlegger Road) in Covington.

STEM TEACHER AND ROBOTICS COACH PRE-K -7TH GRADE AT CEDARWOOD SCHOOL.

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

My dad has been a huge influence on becoming a teacher. He taught high school biology for a little while and was an environmental engineer, so there was never a missed opportunity to learn something new. He is the reason I have a passion for STEM.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

My biggest challenge is making sure I stay current in all the advancements in STEM. This is such a fast-paced industry. New technologies and discoveries happen every day, and I want to make sure my students know about them.

What do you feel is the biggest reward?

The biggest reward is seeing the discovery of new information or developing a new skill in my students’ eyes. Their entire face lights up, and you can see that they have made a real connection to their world.

How do you make learning fun for your students?

Play! I have found that from my youngest pre-k students to my oldest 7th graders, play is the best tool for discovery and innovation. Children learn so much just by doing, and when I add challenges and goals, they grow even more.

If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be?

Never stop asking questions! To continue to look at the hows and whys and find those answers. And most importantly, Stay Weird, STEMgineers!

At the heart of the home is the keeping room, a family favorite for its cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Paired with the adjacent kitchen, this space sees the most activity. The kitchen is a dream for both home chefs and design enthusiasts, featuring a navy storage island, white GE Café appliances with brushed gold finishes, quartz countertops, and a glass tile backsplash. A butler pantry with a wine chiller enhances the functionality, while navy accents in the kitchen island and mudroom tie together the home’s neutral and gold-toned color palette.

The master suite is a sanctuary of comfort and elegance. Reclaimed pine floors extend into the bedroom, where a fireplace adds warmth and charm. The bathroom is a luxurious retreat, with quartz countertops, a soaker tub, and a walk-through shower with double showerheads. Separate vanity spaces and under-mount sinks ensure every detail of convenience and beauty is met.

A standout feature of the home is its custom touches.

The fireplace mantles are crafted from pine salvaged from Money Hill Plantation, adding a layer of local history. The laundry room includes a unique tile dog shower, blending practicality with style. WHITE CHOCOLATE BREAD PUDDING

BREAD PUDDING

Ingredients:

7oz French bread- torn into small cubes

2 cups heavy cream

2 cups milk

2 cups white chocolate (13oz bag)

4 eggs

1/2 cup sugar

2 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp salt

1 tbsp butter for buttering your pan

Directions:

Heat the heavy cream in a pot with 1 cup of milk. Pour in the white chocolate chips and turn off heat, let it sit and melt.

In a bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt. When the milk and white chocolate mixture has cooled some, add the cold cup of milk.

Slowly add this mixture to the egg mixture while whisking (adding this too fast will scramble your eggs, not good!).

Once all milk mixture is added, add your torn up french bread to the bowl and let it soak for about 15-20 minutes.

Butter your pan you will bake in and pour in the bread mixture. Bake for about 60-70 minutes on 350.

WHITE CHOCOLATE SAUCE

Ingredients:

6oz white chocolate

1 1/2 cups of heavy cream

Directions: Bring the heavy cream to a boil and turn the heat off. Pour in white chocolate and allow it to melt.

It will look runny, but that is okay. When the bread pudding comes out the oven, let it sit for a minute so it will “deflate” and then you can pour as much as you want on top. You may not want to pour the entire mixture, I usually do not. I refrigerate the remaining sauce for drizzling on top later or another use.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative aims to combat heart disease, the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives annually than breast cancer or any other condition. Launched in 2004, Go Red for Women raises awareness and empowers women to take control of their heart health, addressing gaps in awareness and clinical care.

Coretta LaGarde, Executive Director of the American Heart Association in Greater New Orleans, emphasizes the urgency of the campaign. Nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with proper information and education, she explains. However, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a significant issue, with 45% of women aged 20 and older living with some

form of CVD, often without awareness or action. Additionally, fewer than half of women entering pregnancy have optimal cardiovascular health, increasing their risk.

LaGarde highlights how women’s unique life stages, such as pregnancy and menopause, can elevate their risk for CVD. Factors like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and other pregnancy-related conditions are significant contributors. Beyond pregnancy, risks include hormonal changes from birth control or hormone replacement therapy, a history of polycystic ovarian syndrome, and menstrual cycle irregularities. Autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, more common in women, also increase risk, contributing to arterial

plaque build-up and worse outcomes after heart attacks or strokes. Depression and PTSD, both associated with higher CVD risk, are also more prevalent in women.

To address these challenges locally, the American Heart Association of Greater New Orleans launched the Northshore Go Red for Women campaign in 2019, expanding the initiative's reach and impact. The program works to educate women about their personal risk factors, which include health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and family history, as well as lifestyle factors like smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and weight.

LaGarde underscores the importance of knowing and managing these risks. Heart disease and stroke can affect a woman at any age, she says, stressing that awareness and early action are vital for prevention and survival.

As the American Heart Association celebrates its centennial year, the Go Red for Women initiative reflects the organization's dedication to reducing cardiovascular disease in women. The campaign continues to fight for a future where fewer women are lost to preventable heart conditions.

BRADLEY + ASHTON

BY

From the moment their paths crossed, Ashton Elizabeth Politz and Bradley James Keenen discovered a love that would span continents and decades. Ashton, a spirited soul from New Orleans, met Bradley, a determined man from Phoenix, during their sophomore year at Santa Clara University. Their eight-year journey together was filled with laughter, shared dreams, and unwavering support, gradually blossoming into a bond that neither distance nor time could diminish.

PHOTOS

In early 2023, during a carefully planned trip to Chicago with friends, Bradley orchestrated a surprise that would forever change their lives. In the soft drizzle of a rainy afternoon at Lincoln Park, with close friends gathered around, he knelt down and asked Ashton to be his forever. Overwhelmed with emotion, she accepted his heartfelt proposal. The day grew even more magical when their families and additional friends arrived for a surprise proposal party, arranged by Ashton’s beloved aunt and uncle. It was a moment that perfectly encapsulated their shared love and the promise of a future together.

Their wedding day, on November 9, 2024, was a radiant celebration of love and heritage. The ceremony was held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, where heartfelt vows were exchanged in a serene setting. The reception took place at the cherished Metairie Country Club, a venue that held deep personal significance for Ashton, who had spent her childhood swimming in its pool and learning to play tennis. Adorned in a stunning Monique Lhuillier gown with a sweetheart neckline and intricate lace details, Ashton radiated grace and beauty. The wedding colors of sage green, white, gold, and soft pink provided a tranquil yet elegant backdrop, enhanced by the soulful tunes of a live jazz band and a lively second line that brought a touch of New Orleans spirit to the celebration.

A five-tier wedding cake from Bittersweet Confections delighted everyone with alternating flavors and was beautifully decorated with fresh blooms by Leaf and Petal. Although Hurricane Rafael stirred apprehension in the days leading up to the event, the storm never reached them, leaving behind only a humorous anecdote for the future.

Following the wedding, the newlyweds honeymooned in New Zealand and Fiji, where Queenstown’s enchanting landscapes captured their hearts. Now residing in San Francisco, Ashton and Bradley continue to embrace life together, their love story serving as a timeless inspiration to all who know them. Their beautiful journey continues to inspire and ignite hope everywhere.
