GIRLFRIENDS & GRATITUDE | BRAS FOR A CAUSE | ROOFTOP RENDEZVOUS

From the Editor

As we close the chapter on another year, it’s amazing to pause and reflect on how quickly time moves and how much our community has accomplished together. The Northshore continues to inspire us, and it’s your unwavering support that makes each edition of Social Northshore possible. From celebrating local events and spotlighting business leaders to championing incredible causes, our mission remains rooted in showcasing the heart of this amazing community.

With this December/January issue, we’re thrilled to usher in 2025 by highlighting some of the year’s most impactful stories. Among them is the return of the Mutts to Models Charity Gala, proudly presented by Mercedes-Benz of Covington. This signature event, benefiting Scott’s Wish, was a true celebration of kindness and generosity, reminding us all of the power of giving back. Proceeds from the evening will go toward supporting both people and pets in need—a mission that resonates deeply here on the Northshore.

As we turn the page to 2025, our gratitude for you, our readers, only grows. Thank you for allowing us to share in your stories and experiences. Here’s to a year filled with meaningful connections, cherished moments, and continued celebration of all that makes the Northshore truly extraordinary.

SOCIAL’S “Magazine Cover” live auction fundraiser has raised $70,000 over the past four years, fueling the Scott’s Wish Duco Project in its mission to provide critical care for retired Special Operations Forces (SOF) K9s. These extraordinary dogs, like K9 Conan pictured here, receive no government support for medical care despite their invaluable service and sacrifice on the battlefield.

K9 Conan's bravery led to a pivotal moment in history: his efforts cornered ISIS's top terrorist leader, forcing him to detonate a suicide vest alongside his family. In the line of duty, Conan sustained severe injuries but triumphed. Yet, his retirement brought an even graver challenge—cancer. Through the Scott's Wish Duco Project, we were honored to assist with his care, ensuring this hero received the support he deserved.

These K9s are far more than companions; they are loyal partners who stand unwaveringly beside their handlers, ready to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect them.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to this year’s highest bidders, The Whelans & The LeBlancs, for their exceptional generosity and their unwavering support of our mission.

ABOUT THE DUCO PROJECT

Rick Hogg, a 29-year U.S. Army Special Operations veteran, partnered with Scott's Wish to ensure that no SOF K9 handler ever faces the impossible choice of denying critical medical care to their beloved partner in retirement due to financial constraints.

It is thanks to courageous dogs like K9 Duco that many soldiers are alive today.

STORIES, BUILDING COMMUNITY

Lily Cummings TELLING

Lily Cummings' journey is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. As a reporter and fill-in anchor at WWL-TV since 2022, she has dedicated herself to telling the stories of southeast Louisiana with authenticity and heart. For Lily, journalism isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.

Her career began in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2020. Returning to New Orleans, a city that had already captured her heart during her undergraduate years at Loyola University, was a full-circle moment. “WWL-TV has served the ‘greater good’ of our community since 1957, and I have a deep respect for its rich history,” Lily says. With roots in both the city and its vibrant culture, she’s committed to continuing that legacy.

Lily’s path to her current role is a testament to her grit and determination. Starting as a desk assistant while still in college, she worked tirelessly, balancing internships with WDSU and CBS News in New York City before securing her first on-air role in Tulsa. At just 22, she won an Emmy for her reporting, proving that age is no barrier when talent and dedication align.

“Young people are capable of so much if the right people believe in them,” Lily reflects. Despite occasional challenges, including perceptions tied to her age, she remains undeterred. “I remind myself that I have a front-row seat to history. It’s a privilege to tell stories that matter.”

Lily thrives on the diversity of the stories she tells and the people she meets, finding joy in the art of storytelling and the unique culture of southeast Louisiana. Whether editing a compelling video or crafting the perfect line, her work fuels her passion. Her colleagues, many of whom have become close friends, provide the support and camaraderie she values deeply.

Beyond the newsroom, Lily is an active member of her community. She participates in charitable events like Mutts to Models and serves on Loyola’s Young Alumni Board and College of Music and Media Dean’s Visiting Committee. In 2020, she took her commitment to students one step further by establishing a scholarship for communications students at Loyola.

When she’s not working, Lily enjoys exploring the city’s restaurants and festivals, running, and traveling with her beloved dog, Blue.

For Lily, New Orleans isn’t just where she lives; it’s where she thrives. Her story is one of dedication and inspiration, reminding us all that with hard work, curiosity, and a little courage, we can leave a lasting mark on our communities.

BestVets DR. MELISSA BLAZEVICH

PASSIONATE ADVOCATE FOR PETS’ ORAL HEALTH

Dr. Melissa Blazevich, DVM, DAVDC, is a compassionate and skilled advocate for pets’ oral health. “My patients teach me more than I’ll ever be able to give back to them,” she shares. For Dr. Blazevich, every pet deserves a voice and an advocate, and she is honored to play that role. “It’s so rewarding to have an owner tell me how well their pet is doing after a procedure with me.”

As a Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist and Oral Surgeon, Dr. Blazevich offers unparalleled expertise. “In the human world, I’m like a general dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, endodontist, periodontist, orthodontist, and prosthodontist all in one!” she explains. This breadth of skill ensures pets receive the best oral care possible.

A success story close to her heart involves Bessie, a young mixed-breed dog with severe maxillofacial injuries, likely from a horse’s kick. Facing euthanasia, Bessie’s future changed when Dr. Blazevich intervened. “I was able to prevent her from being euthanized over her injuries,” she recalls. Today, Bessie is thriving, a testament to the life-saving impact of veterinary dentistry.

Dr. Blazevich stresses proactive care for pet owners. “Get pet insurance! Have your pets evaluated yearly and ensure their teeth are cleaned annually,” she advises. Regular dental care is vital for pets’ overall health and longevity. Her approach is defined by education and personalized care. “We welcome our clients and patients in a low-stress environment to make them feel like part of the family,” she says.

Dr. Blazevich’s passion for veterinary dentistry began during a clinical rotation in vet school. Since then, she has embraced her calling, transforming lives and giving pets the care they deserve— one smile at a time.

DR. JENIFER NEWTON

DVM, MS, DACVS

OWNER OF SOUTH PAWS AND ADVOCATE FOR PETS’ SURGICAL CARE

Dr. Jenifer Newton, DVM, MS, DACVS, owner of South Paws, is passionate about transforming the lives of pets through advanced surgical care. “The impact of surgery on the lives of dogs and cats is so amazing,” she shares. “Giving them a new lease on life is truly gratifying.”

What sets Dr. Newton apart is her personalized approach to patient care. “I believe in first listening and then educating the owners on their options,” she explains. Whether exploring surgical or non-surgical treatments, she ensures every client feels supported and informed to make the best decisions for their pets.

A memorable success story highlights Dr. Newton’s dedication and skill. Kelce, a stray dog with a severely broken leg, was brought to South Paws by a rescue group. “The injuries were too severe for repair, and we had to amputate her limb,” Dr. Newton recalls. Within two days, Kelce was up, wagging her tail, and thriving thanks to South Paws’ compassionate care and teamwork.

For pet owners, Dr. Newton stresses the importance of preventative care and building a relationship with a trusted veterinarian. “Regular veterinary check-ups and having a family veterinarian who knows you and your pet are key to a healthy, long lifetime,” she advises.

Dr. Newton’s journey began with a high school job at a veterinary hospital. Her passion for surgery was solidified during vet school, where she discovered her true calling. Today, as owner of South Paws, she continues to deliver expert care, giving pets second chances and creating countless success stories.

APPLE CRUMBLE PIE

INGREDIENTS:

Store bought pie crust

1 tbsp flour

3/4 cup sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground ginger

1/4 tsp salt

2.5 apples, peeled and thinly sliced

TOPPING:

1 stick of cold butter

3/4 cup flour

1/3 cup sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon

DIRECTIONS:

Set your oven rack to the lowest position and heat oven to 375

Line a baking sheet with foil

In a food processor or with a hand pastry cutter, cut the butter, flour, sugar and cinnamon until you get a mixture of large and small pea sized clumps (I like mine more on the small size- see pic below)

Refrigerate the mixture until ready to use

In a large bowl, toss the apples, ginger, cinnamon, salt, sugar and flour until coated well

Transfer the apple mixture to the crust, sprinkle it with the crumb topping

Bake until the top is golden and the apples are tender 50-60 minutes

BRAS FOR A CAUSE

The Women’s Council of Realtors® - St. Tammany recently hosted its annual “Bras for a Cause” fundraiser, supporting breast cancer care. The event featured food, music, and auctions, bringing the community together for a great cause. Over the years, it has raised over $257,000 for local hospitals, making a meaningful impact in St. Tammany.

CARYN DUMAS LANG

I am a New Orleans native and have lived on the Northshore in Mandeville since 2002. My interest in art began when I was a child. I have taken art courses here and there over the years, yet it was only after my retirement in 2016 that I began to actively pursue drawing and painting as a serious student. As an active member of the Lacombe Art Guild, St. Tammany Master Gardeners, and St. Tammany Art Association, I appreciate being in the company of friends & fellow artists.

The Annual Three Rivers Art Association event saw its largest turnout yet, with over 250 artists spread throughout downtown Covington. Despite a mix of sunny and rainy weather, artists and art enthusiasts filled the streets, enjoying live music, diverse food, and engaging activities. The weekend proved to be a vibrant celebration of art.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

In South Louisiana, where vibrant communities thrive amid challenges, Second Harvest Food Bank stands as a lifeline for those facing hunger. Since its inception in 1982, the organization has been a powerful force in the fight against food insecurity, driven by its mission to provide food access, advocacy, education, and disaster response. What began as an initiative led by Archbishop Hannan and local leaders has grown into the state’s largest anti-hunger network, serving 23 parishes and countless lives.

At the heart of Second Harvest’s work are programs designed to meet diverse community needs. Through a network of over 500 partners, including food pantries, senior centers, and schools, the organization addresses hunger at every level. Programs like Summer Feeding, Kids Café, and the Backpack Program tackle child hunger, while Meals on Wheels and the Senior Commodity Box Program provide essential nutrition for seniors. In addition, innovative efforts like the Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market bring healthy food to underserved areas, addressing food deserts while promoting equity. Second Harvest even partners with local farmers and nutrition educators to prioritize wellness alongside hunger relief.

The impact of this work is best understood through the stories of those it touches. Bonnie, an elderly widow on the Northshore, is one such example. Struggling to make ends meet on her Social Security income, Bonnie often faced the painful decision of whether to pay for groceries or other essentials. Thanks to the food she receives from a Second Harvest pantry, Bonnie no longer has to miss meals, gaining stability and dignity in the process. Her story is a reminder of how vital Second Harvest’s efforts are for vulnerable populations.

Despite its successes, Second Harvest faces significant challenges. Rising costs and growing demand during disasters stretch resources, while rural and underserved communities remain difficult to reach. Addressing senior hunger—a critical issue in Louisiana, which has the nation’s highest rate— requires continued innovation and outreach. Yet, with every obstacle comes opportunity. Recent expansions, like a new pantry in Tickfaw and strengthened partnerships with Northshore Food Bank, demonstrate how collaboration can amplify impact. Contributions from corporate partners like Winn Dixie and Walmart, and initiatives like Ochsner’s $7,500 donation for Thanksgiving produce, ensure resources reach those who need them most.

The community plays an essential role in Second Harvest’s mission. Through volunteering, donating, hosting food drives, or advocating for policies that support food security, everyone can make a difference. As Second Harvest looks to the future, its vision remains bold: a South Louisiana where no one is hungry, and systemic challenges like health and employment disparities are addressed alongside food insecurity. Together, they’re not just feeding people—they’re building resilience, one meal at a time.

TEACHERfeature

Coach Dragg graduated from Covington High School and then attended SLU. He is married to his wife Angela and has three beautiful children; Quinton, Becca and Mary Jo. He also has four granddaughters; Reighley, Reagan, Harper and Rowan. Coach Dragg teaches Algebra III and is an offensive assistant for FHS. He is also the golf coach. He previously coached football and softball at Northlake Christian School and Springfield High school. He joined the team at FHS in 2013.

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

I come from a family of teachers and they all influenced me.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

The biggest challenge is to make sure all my students understand the material and to cover the material in an appropriate amount of time.

What do you feel is the biggest reward?

Watching my students succeed in life.

How do you make learning fun for your students?

In math, it is tough, but I try to connect the material to the real world.

If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be?

Get a job doing something you enjoy and it will never be a job.

Arnett Mindi SUPER MOM

Mindi Arnett’s story begins in a small town in western Montana, where her life took an unexpected and extraordinary turn at just 17 years old. It was the summer before her senior year when she made the bold decision to join the Marine Corps, leaving behind the quiet familiarity of her hometown for the rigorous challenges of boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. What followed was a remarkable 16-year journey that took her across the globe, immersing her in diverse cultures and experiences, shaping her into a person of resilience and adaptability.

After dedicating so much of her life to service, life offered her a new chapter when her oldest son was just a year old. The opportunity to retire early from the Marine Corps allowed her to embrace a new mission—becoming a stay-athome mom. While her husband continued to serve, Mindi poured her energy into raising their two boys, Zach and Zane, a role that proved as fulfilling as it was challenging. The family moved often, adapting to life in various states, until finally settling in Southern Louisiana, a place they initially thought would only be a brief stop. However, the warmth of the Northshore community and the promise of excellent schools transformed this temporary station into a permanent home.

SUPERMOM

For Mindi, being a stay-at-home mom is an ever-evolving journey. Her days are far from routine, shaped by the needs of her children and the opportunities to be deeply involved in their lives. From volunteering at school to substitute teaching at Lancaster Elementary, she thrives on connection and purpose. Organizing PTA events and working alongside other dedicated parents have given her a sense of belonging and a new “family” in a place far from her Montana roots.

Reflecting on her life, Mindi finds her greatest reward in being present for her children. After years of watching military families endure long separations, she and her husband were intentional about ensuring their boys experienced something different—a steady presence, unwavering support, and a home filled with love. From decorating their house with over-the-top holiday inflatables to planning fun family activities, Mindi has embraced the joy of creating special moments. She laughs as she admits her boys might remember her sarcastic humor more than her tender moments, but deep down, she hopes they’ll hold on to the lessons of kindness, honesty, and resilience.

Mindi’s story is one of transformation, service, and devotion. She has taken the strength she honed as a Marine and channeled it into building a life centered on family and community. Through every move, every challenge, and every moment, she has proven that her greatest accomplishment is not in the places she’s been but in the lives she touches each day.

ARENA TITLE CHRISTMAS PARTY

and TaylorChris

Some love stories unfold naturally, as if they were always meant to be. Taylor Ashleigh Singletary, now Mrs. Lizana, first crossed paths with Chris at Stone Creek Club and Spa, where their shared love of tennis brought them together on the court. It wasn’t until the world slowed down during COVID that their story truly began to take shape.

With Stone Creek closed, the pair started meeting on a small tennis court on Pine Street in Madisonville to play matches with friends. After every game, Chris suggested a visit to the riverfront to sit and talk. Night after night, they returned to the same bench, where conversations flowed, laughter echoed, and love quietly grew. That bench became their spot, a sacred place where their bond deepened during a time when the world offered few distractions.

Four years later, Chris found the perfect way to honor their journey together. He planned a dinner at Keith Young’s Steakhouse but intentionally booked the reservation an hour early. Suggesting they “kill time,” he led Taylor back to their beloved bench. There, at the place where their love story had truly begun, Chris got down on one knee and asked Taylor to spend forever with him.

Their wedding day, April 13, 2024, was filled with joy and meaningful moments at The Greystone. Taylor stunned in a fitted strapless dress with a bow in the front and buttons cascading down the train. The couple’s colors of soft mauve and black were elegantly woven into the day, from the bridal party attire to the delicate pink and mauve accents in Taylor’s bouquet.

Laughter was a hallmark of their celebration, most notably during their first dance. In a twirl gone slightly awry, Taylor accidentally elbowed Chris in the nose. Instead of breaking the moment, the mishap filled the room with laughter, perfectly captured by their photographer in a series of photos that became instant treasures.

One of the most cherished aspects of their day was the presence of their two children, who shared in the love and joy of the celebration. Their wedding cake, a stunning four-tier design adorned with a satin white bow, featured layers of classic wedding cake, pineapple filling, and lemon curd—a delicious symbol of their union.

Though they haven’t honeymooned yet, Taylor and Chris have a trip to Cabo planned for next spring to celebrate both their one-year anniversary and their love story. Now back in Covington, the Lizana family continues their journey together, full of love, laughter, and the promise of forever.
