COMMUNITY leader
Dr. ButlerTonya
A Life of Service, Advocacy, and Leadership

Dr. Tonya Butler has dedicated her life to service—first in the U.S. Army and now as a passionate advocate for veterans. In recognition of her ongoing commitment, the City of Fairhope named her the 2024 Veteran of the Year, and the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce honored her as the 2025 Community Leader of the Year.
Dr. Butler served as a Sergeant (E-5) in the U.S. Army, with assignments in both the United States and Korea. She was a member of the U.S. Army Band, playing the flute and piccolo, and also served as a nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare specialist, music librarian, and master fitness trainer. Her distinguished service earned her numerous military awards, including the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, Achievement Medal, and Overseas Service Ribbon.
Since transitioning to civilian life, Dr. Butler has remained deeply involved in the veteran community. She serves as Public Affairs Officer for American Legion Post 199, teaches adaptive kayaking for injured and disabled veterans, and organized the Gulf Coast Veterans Family Camp at Camp Grace. She is also working to recruit more women veterans to Post 199 and is passionate about mentorship programs that inspire young girls to serve their country and communities.
In addition to her advocacy work, Dr. Butler uses her expertise as a Human Movement Specialist and medical massage therapist to support veterans struggling with chronic pain and injuries. Through her business, Dynamic Therapeutics and Sports Performance, LLC, she provides corrective exercise, mindset coaching, and sports and medical massage therapy. She is also a Certified Natural Health Practitioner, offering sound therapy to help veterans relieve symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Dr. Butler moved to Daphne in 2014 with her daughter, Madalyn, who graduated from Daphne High School and is now starting her career locally. She loves the tight-knit community of the Eastern Shore, appreciating the opportunities to connect, celebrate, and experience Mardi Gras, something she never had before moving to Alabama.
Her journey has not been without challenges. After leaving the military, she faced depression, injury recovery, and difficulty transitioning to civilian life. Without guidance or support, she had to navigate these struggles alone. This experience drives her mission today—to ease the transition for other veterans, help them find purpose, and ensure they receive the support they deserve.
She believes the biggest challenge veterans face is navigating the VA red tape and overcoming the reluctance to ask for help. Many veterans struggle with isolation and mental health issues, making it critical to offer accessible, affordable counseling and specialized therapy outside of the VA system.
Through her service, advocacy, and business, Dr. Butler is making a lasting impact, ensuring veterans are supported, empowered, and connected to a community that values their sacrifices.

We have but one mission. Providing our clients with the guidance for what’s now and what’s next. Our team, our abilities and our promise to you, is to provide the advice, tools and solutions you need to chart your path to success.

A SWEET TRADITION
ESMA’s Annual King Cake Sale Continues to Make an Impact
Each year, the Eastern Shore Medical Alliance (ESMA) brings Randazzo’s King Cakes to Fairhope in a highly anticipated fundraiser. For over 25 years, the King Cake Sale has been ESMA’s biggest fundraiser, benefiting nonprofits like Baldwin Family Village, Alabama Free Clinic, and Under His Wings.
What began as a small effort has grown into a massive communitywide event. “Originally, members would load their minivans with king cakes from Slidell and bring them back,” recalls Jana Brown, a former ESMA member. “As demand grew, we started renting a U-Haul and making multiple trips. It became an adventure— loading up late at night and celebrating with a Louisiana dinner before heading home.”
According to ESMA President Meg Willett, this year’s sale reached 1,800 cakes. “We still rent a U-Haul, drop it at Randazzo’s on Saturday morning, and some members turn it into a New Orleans girls’ weekend. By Sunday morning, we pick up the truck, return to Fairhope, and distribute orders before selling at Thomas Hospital on Monday and Tuesday.”
Beyond the fun, the fundraiser’s impact is what makes it special. Over the years, proceeds have also supported organizations like the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation and Lighthouse.
ESMA proudly recognizes its top volunteers, with Kylie McDaniel leading this year’s fundraiser as its Chair Laura Burton was crowned the 2025 King Cake Queen for achieving the highest sales of all members, while Emily Henderson, a longtime titleholder, continues to be a top seller. Jordan Carter was honored as the top new member seller
“This tradition has thrived for over 25 years,” Willett says. “We love seeing its impact on our community.”
ESMA brings together physician (MD/DO) spouses and families throughout Baldwin County to support local needs and each other. For more information, visit esmedicalalliance.com.

QUEEN DAPHNE XXV Stephanie SIMS HALE
This year, Stephanie Sims Hale represented Apollo’s Mystic Ladies as the organization’s Queen for its Silver Jubilee. Stephanie has been a dedicated member of AML for 17 years. She and her husband, Mike, have been married for 32 years and raised three children—Holley, Taylor, and Suezanna. This year was even more special as Holly and Suezanna got to experience the moment alongside their mom as members of the organization.
What inspired you to join AML, and what keeps you coming back year after year?
Honestly, I joined because I fell in love with Mardi Gras and wanted to ride on a float! My friend Gay Davis and I had been talking about it, and Candace Antinerella, a member of AML, encouraged us to join. We had all worked together at the ballpark, and it just made sense— it sounded fun!
If you were encouraging someone to join, what would you tell them about the experience?
I originally joined for self-serving reasons, but my experience has led me to know so many amazing women who continue to inspire and impress me. The friendships and connections have been a blessing I never could have imagined.
If you could describe your reign as Queen in three words, what would they be and why?
Friendship – I’ve had the opportunity to truly get to know so many of the incredible women in our organization.
Loyalty – My Float Sisters have been there for me at every turn, always lending a hand—especially Gay Davis, who I joined with.
Love – This entire organization has made me feel so loved and supported, and I’m beyond honored to represent such a wonderful group of women.
The Irish Claddagh—representing friendship, loyalty, and love—is something Queen #1 and AML founder, Kathy Ebbitt, taught me about, and it perfectly symbolizes my experience.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve as Queen Daphne XXV and represent Apollo’s Mystic Ladies!

EMBLEM IX SHERRY PALMER
“I’ve been a member of Apollo’s Mystic Ladies for 10 years. After serving as AML’s costume seamstress, I was drawn to its fun, lively atmosphere. Over the years, I’ve built special friendships that keep me coming back. Being part of AML means being part of a family—a sisterhood that supports one another through good times and bad, loving fiercely and caring deeply. Representing AML during our 25th year was an incredible honor and the experience of a lifetime. The best part was getting to know more members and feeling the overwhelming love and support throughout the year. I will cherish these memories forever, especially sharing the spotlight with Queen Stephanie Hale, who embodies everything a queen should be—beautiful, gracious, kind, and caring. She made this milestone year even more special!”

APOLLO’S MYSTIC LADIES
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN SAVAGE
Apollo’s Mystic Ladies kicked off Mardi Gras on the Eastern Shore, parading through Olde Towne Daphne. For the third year, their emblem float by Patty Keenan preceded nine floats provided by the Conde Cavaliers of Mobile. Following the parade, members and guests gathered for a ball at Daphne Civic Center. The theme, Silver Jubilee, celebrated the organization’s 25th Anniversary. Queen Stephanie and Emblem Sherry were joined by the Grand Marshal, the Modern Eldorados.

How does your bank stay actively involved in the local community?
We believe in supporting causes that our bankers are passionate about, empowering them to make a meaningful impact. Our involvement spans a wide range of organizations and events across the county, including Kiwanis Club, Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival, Annual National Shrimp Festival, Ducks Unlimited, and more.

What makes your banking team unique, and how do you build strong customer relationships?
What makes our team unique is our bankers' ability and passion for building relationships—not just with our customers, but also with each other. We truly enjoy working together and value the connections we create.
Was Mardi Gras especially meaningful for a member of your team this year?
Our very own Jodi Holland served as President of the Order of Mystic Magnolias (O.O.M.M.) in Fairhope! Also, my first visit to Fairhope was as a college student during Mardi Gras in 1999. It was such a unique experience in an amazing small town that I knew instantly I wanted to live here one day. Twenty-two years ago, I made that dream a reality.

1/4 cup pasta water
1/2 cup roasted red peppers, chopped Green onions, thinly sliced for garnish

Savor Savor
DIRECTIONS:
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook for 5 minutes, until it begins to brown. Add bell peppers and onions, cooking for 8 minutes until softened. Stir in shrimp and ½ teaspoon of Creole seasoning, then cook for 8-10 minutes, until the shrimp are fully cooked. Transfer the sausage, vegetables, and shrimp to a bowl and set aside.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add dry pasta and cook for 8 minutes. Before draining, reserve ¼ cup of pasta water and set it aside. Drain the pasta and set it aside as well.
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 2 minutes, whisking constantly. Gradually whisk in heavy cream and increase the heat until it begins to bubble. Cook for 1 minute, then remove from heat. Whisk in cheese, the remaining 2½ teaspoons of Creole seasoning, and smoked paprika, stirring until smooth.
Return the sausage, vegetables, and shrimp to the skillet with the sauce. Add drained pasta, reserved pasta water, and roasted red peppers, stirring until well combined. Cook over medium-low heat for 5-8 minutes, until everything is heated through.
Serve hot, garnished with thinly sliced green onions. Enjoy!

KREWE OF MULLET MATES

The Krewe of Mullet Mates once again brought its laid-back Mardi Gras spirit to Baldwin County, parading along Bon Secour Bay instead of downtown Fairhope. Founded in 2001, the group is known for its humor and Joe Cain-style floats. This year’s parade featured approximately 25 units. Members and guests kicked off the festivities with a lively Mardi Gras celebration at Oak Hollow Farm one week prior.

My wife, Teresa, and I have been members for 16 years. It’s a great organization that we can enjoy together at a reasonable price. It’s very laid-back, and the ball and parade are always a blast—such a great group of people to have fun with! You don’t have to dress up; just come as you’re comfortable, but you can if you want to. We meet once a month at Elk, bring a dish, have a meeting, eat, and visit. It’s a great time!

New Alabama Child Care Tax Credits Aim to Expand Access
Affordable childcare is a growing concern for families across Alabama, particularly in Baldwin County, where many areas are considered childcare deserts. With high construction costs making expansion difficult and childcare centers operating on razor-thin 0–5% profit margins, sustaining quality early education remains a challenge.
Recognizing this need, two new Alabama Child Care Tax Credit Laws took effect on January 1, 2025, offering financial relief to both childcare providers and employers.
The Facility Tax Credit helps licensed childcare centers that accept subsidized (low-income) children. Centers with a 5-star Alabama Quality Stars rating, like STARS Early Learning Academy, can receive up to $25,000 in refundable tax credits, with $2,000 per subsidy spot. Additionally, businesses that establish on-site childcare can qualify for up to $600,000 in tax credits to create these much-needed spaces.
Helping Working Families – How to Approach Your Employer
The Employer Tax Credit encourages businesses to support working parents by covering a portion of their childcare costs.
Small businesses (fewer than 25 employees) can receive a 100% tax credit for tuition paid as an employee benefit. Larger businesses can receive a 75% tax credit for the same support.
With these tax credits now in place, employees earning less than $80,000 gross annually should advocate for childcare tuition assistance in their workplaces. Tax credits can be applied starting January 1, 2025, helping families access quality care while encouraging businesses to invest in early education.
While these initiatives provide meaningful support, more investment is needed to ensure that affordable, high-quality childcare is accessible to all Alabama families.

STARS MARDI GRAS PARADE

SAVAGE
The STARS Early Learning Academy Mardi Gras parade began during the COVID-19 pandemic to bring cheer to Country Place Senior Living residents. The first year, they watched from their windows, but now they join the fun from the back patio. Parents create floats or decorate wagons and strollers, while STARS staff help children make masks and hats. Each year, the floats grow more elaborate, and this year, the 5 Mile Brass led the parade.

Yardi Gras on Morphy
A Tradition of Joy and Community
For Drs. Amy and Steve Phillippi, Mardi Gras is more than a celebration—it’s a way to spread joy, support local artists, and bring the community together. Their now-iconic Yardi Gras display began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when parades were canceled. Inspired by New Orleans’ Porch Parade movement, they decided to bring the magic of Mardi Gras to their yard.
“We wanted to support local artists, so we reached out to Craig Stephens of Carnival Artists, who builds floats for Maids of Jubilee,” says Amy. “That first year, we rented a massive bee and flower sculpture, calling it ‘Krewe of Mis-BEE-having.’ It allowed us to celebrate, even while quarantining.”
Now in their fifth year, each display carries special meaning. “Our second-year theme featured a massive pelican, honoring our dear friend Ms. Patsy Miller, who taught us about Jubilees and cast nets,” Amy shares. “This year’s Rainbow Fish theme is a tribute to our daughters, Sophia and Lilly, and their beloved childhood books.”
The display has become a beloved community fixture. “Neighbors stop by, children wander through the NOLA sign parade, and people take pictures daily,” Amy says. “Our goal is simple: bring joy and smiles.”
One moment stands out—after their third year, a little girl on crutches knocked on their door, saying her favorite part of the day was driving past their decorations. “That’s why we can’t stop now,” Amy says.
Through Yardi Gras, the Phillippis have formed lasting friendships. A photographer’s Instagram post connected Amy with Clark Underbakke (@clarkthecookiefairy), who left cookies in their mailbox and later became a close friend.
Now, Amy, Clark, and Shay Girard are launching a new Mardi Gras tradition—a secret, sought-after throw for Fairhope’s Maids of Jubilee parade, inspired by the decorated shoes of New Orleans’ Muses parade.
“The friendships and community that have grown from Yardi Gras have made Mardi Gras even more special,” Amy says. “We can’t wait to see where this tradition takes us next!”

MAIDS OF JUBILEE
The Maids of Jubilee (MOJ) is the Eastern Shore’s first all-female Mardi Gras organization and the first to feature female marshals on horseback in its parade. This year, MOJ took spectators on a trip around the world, with floats showcasing different parts of the globe. Following the parade, the celebration continued with a ball at the Fairhope Civic Center. The parade featured 10 floats, designed by Mark Calametti and built by Craig Stephens’ Carnival Artists.

MYSTIC MUTTS OF REVELRY

The 21st Annual Mystic Mutts of Revelry dog parade, benefiting The Haven no-kill animal shelter, kicked off at Fairhoper’s Community Park. This year’s theme, “The Real House Dogs of the Eastern Shore,” brought a fun-filled celebration as hundreds of pets and their humans took to the streets of Downtown Fairhope, tossing Mardi Gras beads and showing off their festive costumes. Founded in 2004, this beloved event continues to support The Haven while bringing joy to the community.

KNIGHTS OF ECOR ROUGE (KOER) A Knight Looks at Forty
KOER marked its 40th anniversary with the theme, “A Knight Looks at Forty”—a nod to Jimmy Buffett’s 1974 classic, A Pirate Looks at Forty.
Founded in 1984 by a group of friends who conceived the idea while on a spirited sailing trip to the Grenadine Islands, KOER became the first Eastern Shore parading group in 1985. With over 400 members, it continues honoring tradition, community, and Mardi Gras spirit.
This milestone prompted members, both new and founding, to reflect on what makes KOER such a treasured organization.
“Being part of this organization means being part of our community on the Eastern Shore. It’s an opportunity to bring joy to families who love the parade, while also building lifelong friendships with fellow members.”
“Over the last 40 years, we’ve welcomed new friends while strengthening bonds with those who have been here since the beginning. The sense of pride in this organization has never wavered.”
“In the early years, we would visit a local nursing home before the parade, bringing joy to those who couldn’t come out and watch. It was a wonderful way to give back to the community.”
“We’ve had some unforgettable parade moments—like flying in a 300-member Samba band from Rio de Janeiro, shooting fireworks over downtown Fairhope, and even having an elephant lead the parade in our early years! We’ve faced challenges too, from parade floats catching fire to near rain-outs, but through it all, the show always goes on!”
Recognizing this 40-year milestone is particularly meaningful for those who have been part of KOER since the very beginning.
“It’s hard to quantify the many years of fun and evolution we’ve experienced together. The excitement of new members today mirrors what we felt when we first started. Many of our children now ride with us, ensuring our legacy continues for generations to come.”

Iworked as a NICU nurse until 2018, earning my BSN from South Alabama College of Nursing on May 11, 2012—the same day my second child, Skinner, was born. Though I missed walking with my class by just a few hours, I’m incredibly proud to have completed nursing school while having two babies.
For the past seven years, I have been a full-time stay-athome mom. However, staying still has never been my strong suit! My love for holiday decorating led to being featured in Mobile Bay Monthly, which opened the door to decorating for others. More recently, I rekindled my passion for painting, a creative outlet that has always been a huge part of my life. I truly consider creating to be my love language. I also co-own Smith Straw, working alongside my husband in that venture.
I am blessed with four incredible children: Hollins (14), Skinner (12), Redford (9), and Sterling (7), each with their own unique personality and talents. Hollins is my driven leader, excelling in academics, athletics, and extracurriculars at UMS-Wright. Skinner is my sports-obsessed child, dreaming of playing in the MLB. He also plays guitar and has earned Scholar with Distinction at UMS-Wright multiple times. Redford, my old soul, is full of humor and ambition—he even says he wants to be the next President! Sterling, my youngest, is all about competing with Skinner and trying to outdo his older brother in everything.
I want my children to remember that no dream is too big and that I will always be their biggest cheerleader. I constantly remind them to "shoot higher" because hard work and grit can take them anywhere.
Holidays and birthdays are a big deal in our house! For Halloween, we love family costumes, and our favorite was “Bands and Babes”, the same theme I chose when I served as President of Maids of Jubilee. For Christmas, we take pictures with Santa at the Grand Hotel and enjoy brunch afterward. I also hand-paint ornaments for my children based on their favorite books or movies. Valentine’s Day means special mailboxes filled with treats, and for Easter, we help host a charity Easter egg hunt, benefiting a local family or organization. Birthdays are always special, with a school lunch visit, morning donuts for their class, and a small family cake from Publix to celebrate at home.

Cunningham Smith
This is a truly special time for our family, as Mardi Gras is deeply woven into our history and traditions. My grandfather, father, aunt, siblings, husband, and I have all played roles in the festivities, from Knights to Ladies of the Court. My father and brother have both had the honor of serving as King of Mardi Gras. Most recently, my oldest daughter, Hollins, is serving on the Juvenile Court this year. I had the honor of serving as Maids of Jubilee President (2022-2023) and take immense pride in this legacy. My mom rode in Maids of Jubilee for years, and it remains one of my fondest childhood memories. Just a few decades later, I became the organization’s youngest-ever President, an honor I will always cherish.
Mardi Gras is more than a party—it’s a celebration of arts, culture, and tradition. Watching my children enjoy it just as much as I did growing up is a full-circle moment. They love seeing me ride in Maids of Jubilee, receiving special throws just for them. Sending Randazzo King Cakes to school has also been a tradition since preschool.
The greatest lesson my children have taught me is to slow down and truly enjoy life. Before motherhood, I was always chasing the next milestone, but now I cherish every phase.
While my children fill most of my time, I remain involved with Maids of Jubilee, National Charity League, and the Junior League of Mobile. Life is busy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’ve learned to embrace each season, support my kids’ passions, and continue creating in every way possible. I can’t wait to see where life takes them.

AMERICAN LEGION GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY PRISCILLA SANTIAGO
After years of fundraising and operating from a temporary building, American Legion Post 199 in Fairhope took a major step forward, breaking ground on a brand-new facility. Despite the chilly morning, over 100 supporters gathered at the iconic Eastern Shore site to witness history.
Post-Hurricane Sally, the Legion remains committed to restoring its 1912-era home, but members decided to move forward with constructing a 3,700-square-foot, $1.5 million building to better serve veterans and the community.
Fundraising efforts continue to support both the new facility and the historic restoration. Donations are needed to meet this goal, and supporters can contribute through the Post’s website: easternshorepost199.com.
