COMMUNITY leader

Leading Baller Spirit

In July 2024, Tonya Gollotte became CEO of Baller Dream Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and young adults battling cancer.

The foundation’s mission is to ease their journey by fostering meaningful relationships, providing critical support, and inspiring communities.

The name Baller Dream comes from the modern term “Baller,” meaning excellent or spectacular—a reflection of the strength of the young warriors they serve. Instead of patients, they are called Ballers, empowering them to DREAM BIG.

Diagnosed with cancer at 29, Frank DeBlasi had a strong support system but saw many young adults facing their battle alone. He founded Baller Dream Foundation to uplift cancer warriors through treatment and beyond, serving patients up to age 29 and filling a critical gap in resources for those over 18.

Tonya focuses on building partnerships, engaging donors, and leading initiatives that bring hope, joy, and support to Ballers, while raising national awareness. The foundation collaborates with children’s hospitals, child life specialists, social workers, and oncology nurses across six states. Locally, Children’s & Women’s Hospital, Southern Cancer Center, as well as UAB and Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, play a vital role in ensuring cancer warriors receive the support they need.

Tonya remarks, “Board members Nathan Cox, Founder & Chairman of 68 Ventures, and Steve Carey, Owner & President of CertaPro Painters® of Mobile and Baldwin Counties, are two of our most valued local collaborators and connectors, further enhancing the foundation’s ability to fulfill its mission. 68 Ventures and the Cox Family Foundation go above and beyond each year,

hosting a first-class 10.5K walk/run—Ballin’ on Belrose—to support our cause. This year’s event will take place on May 10th, and we look forward to another incredible experience!”

A new event for Alabama this year is the Dinner of Dreams. The evening will feature live gifting for a local Baller, a silent auction, and an exciting Family Feud game night, with Alabama vs. Auburn teams led by Nathan Cox and Jordan Watkins, CEO of PTAC Companies.

Originally from Mobile, Tonya has lived in Fairhope for three years, after nine years in Daphne. She cherishes the sense of community, the charm of downtown Fairhope, and the beauty of Mobile Bay. A devoted mother and grandmother, she finds joy in family, Pilates, and serving on the board of Impact 100 Baldwin County, which awards transformative grants to local nonprofits.

Tonya shares, “What I love most about my work is making a direct impact on the lives of our Ballers and their families during challenging times. Their strength inspires me, and the dedication of our donors, volunteers, and team fuels my passion to keep bringing hope and joy, no matter the challenges.”

Not many dentists have the privilege to practice with their father and their daughter.

Dr. Edwards continues her family’s legacy by delivering compassionate, comprehensive care with her daughter, Dr. Long. Dr. Pamela O. Edwards Dentistry, a family-owned office, has served Gulf Shores and Orange Beach since 1989.

Dr. Long grew up on the Gulf Coast watching her mom practice dentistry. She remembers the school bus dropping her off at her mother’s dental office. Now, Dr. Long is proud that her son and daughter visit her office after school, realizing this area is a wonderful place to raise a family.

DR. PAMELA OSBORNE EDWARDS and DR. MARY EDWARDS LONG

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT DENTISTRY?

Dr. Edwards: Helping people in their time of need and being able to practice dentistry with my daughter.

Dr. Long: When I transform someone’s smile with a cosmetic procedure, it changes their lives. The first thing someone says is, “I wish I had done this sooner!”.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PRACTICE IN THE GULF SHORES AND ORANGE BEACH AREA?

Dr. Edwards: We visited every summer while I was at UAB Dental School, so when I graduated, my husband had the idea to move to a place we would love to spend our lives together and keep our children and grandchildren close!

Dr. Long: Growing up on the Gulf coast was a wonderful experience. Nothing compares with the natural beauty or the remarkable people that make this place so special.

WHAT INSPIRED BOTH OF YOU TO PURSUE DENTISTRY AND HOW DOES WORKING TOGETHER ENHANCE YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

Dr. Edwards: My father practiced Dentistry for 60 years and was my mentor. I am proud to be able to work with my daughter and I hope to be as good of a teacher as he was.

Dr. Long: We are only one of a few mother and daughter dentists to graduate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Dentistry and practice together in the state of Alabama. It is a rare honor.

We live for details!

MASTERS OF THE Ceremony

Shannon

+ David

Thepath Shannon Hesse and David Smart took to the altar is a testament to how some connections are destined to come full circle. After meeting in high school, the couple began dating when David and his cousin drove Shannon to Bama Bound in 1989. Decades later, they rekindled their romance, culminating in a heartfelt proposal on their boat in Magnolia River, where David reminded Shannon of their first meaningful conversation 34 years earlier.

Shannon, now Shannon Hesse Smart, is the broker and co-owner of the newly established South Coast Properties, while David owns and operates Streamline Environmental.

The couple’s intimate wedding took place on the lawn of their newly built home by Magnolia River, with only close family in attendance. Shannon’s daughters and David’s children stood by their sides, making the ceremony both deeply personal and meaningful.

Shannon wore a form-fitting lace gown with a nude liner, chosen with the enthusiastic approval of her daughters. The wedding colors, moss green and gold, beautifully complemented the natural riverside setting.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEFANI HORN PHOTOGRAPHY

The couple’s grand entrance was unforgettable, as they arrived by boat with their children to the iconic opening of Prince’s Let’s Go Crazy. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate this thing called life…” As Shannon described, “It was perfect!”

Following the ceremony, friends joined them for a reception described by their caterer as “just a good, old-fashioned lawn party.” Southern charm was abundant, with guests enjoying fried oysters, shrimp, okra, and other delights. Dessert included a three-tier chocolate and vanilla cake with buttercream and cookies & cream mousse, along with Shannon’s close friend Staci Niemeyer’s signature praline banana pudding, which was a hit.

Shannon and David plan to honeymoon this spring. For now, they are embracing life together in their new home on Magnolia River in Magnolia Springs.

Their wedding was more than a celebration of love—it was a reminder of the beauty in life’s simplest and sweetest moments.

For over a century, the American Heart Association (AHA) has championed the fight against heart disease and stroke, steadfastly adhering to its mission of saving, improving, and extending lives. In Alabama, the AHA focuses on five core areas—women’s health, COVID-19, tobacco and vaping, patient care, and healthy living—all underpinned by a commitment to health equity. By working alongside local organizations, sponsors, and businesses, the AHA is making strides to improve statewide health through programs such as CPR training, blood pressure screenings, and education initiatives promoting healthier lifestyles.

The Lifesaving Mission of AHA

Legacy of Innovation

Founded in 1924 by six determined physicians, the AHA emerged during a time when heart disease was deemed a hopeless diagnosis. These visionaries united to foster research and develop strategies to treat and prevent cardiovascular conditions.

Challenges and Opportunities

Heart disease remains the leading health threat in the U.S., and stroke is a major cause of disability. Despite advancements in medical science, rising obesity rates and unhealthy lifestyle choices hinder progress. The AHA believes in fostering a culture that prioritizes health and wellness, emphasizing the need for collective action to drive change.

Innovative Community Programs

The AHA offers impactful programs to empower individuals and communities in the fight against cardiovascular disease:

CPR Training Programs: Initiatives like CPR in Schools teach lifesaving skills to students and educators, while community toolkits broaden CPR access.

EmPOWERED to Serve: This program educates under-resourced communities on controlling blood pressure, understanding family health history, and preventing strokes.

Social Impact Funds: Supporting projects that address social determinants of health, such as access to healthy food, housing, and education.

Community Resources: Offering toolkits, webinars, and multilingual materials to promote heart health and disease prevention.

Community Involvement

The AHA’s mission thrives on community support. Here’s how individuals and organizations can contribute:

Volunteer: Assist with local events or administrative tasks.

Donate: Fund research, education, and advocacy efforts.

Participate in Events: Join initiatives like the Heart Walk to raise awareness and funds.

Advocate: Support heart-healthy policies at state and federal levels.

Fundraise: Organize campaigns using AHA’s resources.

Corporate Partnerships: Engage in workplace giving, sponsorships, and employee volunteerism.

Vision for the Future

The AHA’s ambitious goals include increasing healthy life expectancy, advancing health equity, reducing cardiovascular disease rates, and promoting healthy lifestyles. By 2030, the organization aims to significantly improve health outcomes and ensure equitable care access for all.

Through unwavering dedication and community collaboration, the AHA continues to drive impactful change and save lives across Coastal Alabama and beyond.

Leaders of Impact

The Leaders of Impact campaign brings together passionate changemakers to address these critical issues. Over seven weeks, nominees and their Impact Teams leverage their networks to:

Educate communities about heart disease symptoms and warning signs.

Raise vital funds for lifesaving research.

Advocate for policies promoting health and well-being.

Each community recognizes a Leaders of Impact Winner, with the top national nominee earning the title of 2024 National Leaders of Impact Winner. This year, James Long Jr. was named the winner of the Coastal Alabama Leaders of Impact campaign.

Jodi + Kevin

details

Jodi Keating, VP and Community Banker at Merchants & Marine Bank in Fairhope, and Kevin Holland, VP at Memorial Health Systems in Gulfport, MS, tied the knot in a wedding filled with love, family, and perseverance.

During their first date in spring 2023 at OSO in Orange Beach, “We both knew that evening something special was happening,” Jodi recalls. After dating for just over seven months, Kevin proposed at sunset on their favorite swing overlooking Biloxi Bay. As they celebrated, dolphins appeared in the bay—a touching “God wink” that made the moment unforgettable.

Their wedding and reception took place last fall at The Balcony on Church Street in downtown Fairhope. The ceremony was truly a family affair, with Kevin’s sons, Jackson and Hayes, his daughter-in-law Aubrey, and Jodi’s children, Tony, Lindsay, Elizabeth, and Justin, standing by their sides as they united their families.

The road to the wedding was anything but smooth. Just weeks before the big day, Jodi endured two major surgeries—a broken kneecap and a perforated appendix. Determined to move forward, she leaned on the support of family and friends.

Her son walked her down the aisle, and she even managed to sway on the dance floor during the reception.

The flowers for the ceremony and reception held special meaning, as they were thoughtfully arranged by the bride’s sisters, Holly Maynard and Debra Mullins, along with her close-knit group of friends, affectionately called "The Nest"—Sherry Sullivan, Laura English, Dianne Herzog, and Lee Teumer. Jodi shares, "My dear friend Mary Megan Parker, the absolute BEST wedding planner EVER, not only helped with the flowers but also took care of all the coordination details. She made everything seamless!"

Though their original honeymoon plans to Gatlinburg, TN, were postponed due to Jodi's surgeries and recovery, the couple enjoyed a restful week in the 30A-Destin area and looks forward to a “do-over” on their first anniversary.

Now residing in Ocean Springs, MS, Jodi commutes to Fairhope for work, cherishing the faith that brought her and Kevin together. “Finding each other later in life is a blessing,” Jodi says. “We trust that everything happens for a reason.”

Roxanna Rose Hare and Michael John McConnell III were introduced by mutual friends while attending the University of Alabama. After graduating in 2019, their connection deepened, beginning with a boat ride to dinner at Flippers in Orange Beach. Four years later, Michael proposed on a perfect day in Fairhope, starting with a romantic picnic by the Bay and culminating in a surprise family dinner that evening.

Their February wedding at Steelwood Country Club was a breathtaking celebration. The couple chose a navy and champagne color palette, combining timeless elegance with heartfelt personal touches. Nearby lodges offered a cozy weekend retreat for their families and wedding party, adding an intimate feel to the festivities. Roxanna added a sentimental touch by wearing her mother’s redesigned wedding gown to the rehearsal dinner. For the ceremony, she stunned in an ivory fit-and-flare dress featuring a lace and sequined train. The couple’s yellow lab, Winston, stole the show, making a memorable appearance in a bow tie for photos.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY FARADAY PHOTOGRAPHY

The wedding day was a beautiful bluebird day, much to everyone’s delight, as the couple had prepared for the typical February cold. Guests arrived at the lakeside ceremony via trolley, where a violin quartet played under a breathtaking sunset. Roxanna’s hometown preacher, Brother Johnny, who baptized her as a child, officiated the ceremony. Scripture was read from her father’s cherished Bible—a well-worn testament to his faith, and the spiritual leader he has always been for Roxanna and his family.

The reception was lively and joyful, with the Blanton Reed Band energizing the dance floor. The groom’s cake showcased Michael’s love of the outdoors with a tree-bark design and antlers, while the bride’s cake featured four tiers of vanilla with buttercream and floral accents.

The evening ended as the band played “Sweet Home Alabama” during a spirited send-off featuring crimson and white shakers. After honeymooning in Sedona, Arizona, the couple now resides in Daphne, Alabama. Michael works as a custom home builder, and Roxanna is a physician assistant. Their wedding was a heartfelt celebration of love, faith, and unforgettable memories.

John and

Dr.Anne Hollis Lipscomb and John Raiford Estes were united in marriage in an elegant ceremony at Little Point Clear in Fairhope.

After three years of dating, including 18 months long-distance, John proposed in January 2024. They had recently moved to Starkville for Anne’s position at Mississippi State University, and John suggested a campus tour. Braving one of the coldest days of the year, he got down on one knee outside Dudy Noble Field and asked Anne to marry him. Adding to the special moment, John had both families waiting at home to celebrate their engagement.

Anne wore a classic Stella York gown made of Mikado silk with an off-the-shoulder neckline, a full A-line skirt, and buttons trailing down the train. A dramatic silk bow and satin-trimmed cathedral veil completed her timeless look. The couple chose French blue with white and green accents to create a sophisticated color palette.

Anne and John prioritized an unforgettable guest experience, featuring a cocktail buffet with gourmet bites and signature dishes. To cap off the evening, guests enjoyed late-night McDonald’s Happy Meals—a playful nod to the bride and groom’s favorite treat.

The four-tier wedding cake featured alternating layers of toasted coconut and dulce de leche filling, adorned simply with a silk bow and surrounded by beautiful florals.

The couple honeymooned in St. Lucia at Halcyon Beach and now reside in Starkville, Mississippi, where they look forward to a lifetime of love and cherished memories.

DeLawrence + Darnesha

WhenDarnesha Lewis and DeLawrence Square were high schoolers in the same circle, both working at the same mall—Darnesha would treat DeLawrence to leftover breakfast from Chick-fil-a. They were just friends at the time, but as fate would have it, that all changed two decades later. After years of following different paths, Lawrence returned to Mobile and reached out to Darnesha, who encouraged him to join her for karaoke. What began as a friendly outing quickly turned romantic as Lawrence saw her as more than a tomboy— she had grown into a sophisticated and educated down to earth woman. Their deep conversations about life, music, and poetry sealed their bond. After reconnecting in July of 2022, the couple dated for one year before becoming engaged.

On their wedding day, Darnesha wore a stunning Oleg Cassini gown featuring lace appliques, a corset back, and a chapel train. The couple’s 150 guests celebrated their union surrounded by dusty rose, ivory, and lavender hues. Darnesha walked down the aisle escorted by three men who shaped her life after her father’s passing: her Uncle Darry, her Uncle Nashid, and her son, Dylan, who handed her emotionally to her husband.

Their reception featured an elevated Southern-inspired menu, from shrimp and grits to bacon-wrapped duck. Guests enjoyed a simple but elegant threetier cake adorned with cream cheese icing, fresh greenery, and dusty rose roses. The couple plans to honeymoon in New Zealand this summer, exploring the hometown of DeLawrence’s best man, who owns an apple orchard.

Now, the newlyweds call downtown Mobile home as they begin the next chapter of their beautiful journey together.

Elizabeth+ Lance

Elizabeth Anne Gentry and Lance Errington Patrick’s connection began in January 2021 during a trip to Gatlinburg with mutual friends. What started as an awkward meeting quickly turned into something special when Lance asked Elizabeth "Liz" to slow dance to a sweet country song at 3 a.m., a moment she describes as the one that stole her heart.

After three years of dating, Lance was ready to ask Liz to marry him. The couple became husband and wife at Belforest Pointe in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by family and friends. Liz wore a stunning dress with a lacey top, square neckline, sleeveless design, and an open back framed by buttons down the glittering train. Their wedding colors featured shades of green, blush pink, white, and beige, creating an elegant, romantic atmosphere.

Liz shares, "The most special part of our wedding was the palpable love that filled the day. From the planning my mother-in-law did, to his twin sister officiating, to the two father figures who danced with me since my dad has passed, it was all so meaningful. Every single person who attended could feel the love we share, and we’re so grateful for that. And of course, a big thank you to our DJ for making sure everyone had a great time!"

The wedding cake was a classic four-tier design with pearl accents in strawberry and lemon flavors, while Lance’s Bravesthemed groom’s cake paid tribute to his late uncle Carl. A Gathering Place provided a delicious spread, including a charcuterie grazing table, chicken pasta, pork loin, a mashed potato bar, and caprese bites. Guests thoroughly enjoyed the flavorful dishes, making it a memorable part of the celebration.

The couple enjoyed a short honeymoon getaway in Gatlinburg and are planning a longer trip to celebrate their anniversary. They are thrilled to be moving into a new home soon, marking the beginning of the next chapter in their lives together.

Emma Katherine +Luke

Emma Katherine Puckett and Luke Millard Doyle, high school sweethearts who began dating in 2018, met through family as kids and navigated all of life’s teenage milestones together. Their love story, six years in the making, reached a new chapter when Luke proposed during what Emma thought was a casual boat ride with friends to grab dinner at OSO at Bear Point Harbor. Both Luke and Emma’s parents were waiting at the restaurant to celebrate their engagement. Emma recalls the moment with disbelief and joy, describing it as "the best day ever."

The couple celebrated their union with family and friends who traveled from far and wide to share in their special day. The festivities kicked off with a fun rehearsal dinner at the Fairhope Yacht Club, where games and cornhole brought everyone together.

Emma and Luke were married in a beautiful ceremony at Little Point Clear, fulfilling Emma’s lifelong dream of tying the knot at the venue she had cherished since childhood. The ceremony took place against the charming backdrop of the new chapel, finished just the day before. The couple’s vision came to life with slate blue, gold, and white accents, complemented by vibrant pops of color. Surrounded by love throughout the day, Emma and Luke were honored to have Luke’s father officiate the ceremony.

Emma’s gown was a stunning, strapless A-line dress with subtle ruching, a pearl belt, a long train, and a dramatic bow. The couple’s three-tier vanilla wedding cake featured gold floral details and blue abstract smears, matching the day’s sophisticated aesthetic. Guests indulged in a variety of delicious dishes, including a mac and cheese bar, carving station, and southern-inspired appetizers, all expertly prepared by Georgia Roussos Catering. Emma shared, "Everything was so good!"

Following the wedding, the couple honeymooned in Clearwater and Seaside, Florida. They now reside in Silverhill, Alabama, cherishing the memories of their unforgettable celebration.

Megan Dakota +

Megan Fazekas, Director of Marketing at Bluewater Exteriors, and Dakota Harcrow, a server at CoastAL in Orange Beach, tied the knot in a breathtaking beach ceremony at Inlet Beach, Florida. A reception dinner followed at Amici 30A, celebrating their love with friends and family in a perfect coastal setting.

In high school, Megan and Dakota walked the same halls but moved in different circles—he was a football player, and she was a member of the band and color guard. After graduating a year apart and going their separate ways, their paths crossed again in 2019 through shared college classes and a mutual friend. Though they briefly lost touch, they reconnected in early 2020, just before the pandemic, and spent lockdown together, strengthening their bond.

After over three years of dating, Dakota proposed in style. Megan, under the impression she was heading to a girls’ dinner, found herself at the end of a pier adorned with rose petals. Dakota was waiting there with a romantic setup, complete with Megan’s sister capturing the special moment.

Their families, many of whom traveled from northern Alabama, joined them afterward for a surprise dinner, making the day even more memorable.

Megan wore an elegant satin sheath gown with an exposed bustier, beaded train, and button detail, perfectly complementing the wedding’s light blue, green, champagne, and white palette inspired by the beautiful Gulf waters.

With five attendants on each side and loved ones who traveled from as far as California, the couple celebrated their union with a weekend full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Their two-tier wedding cake, crafted by Megan’s aunt, was simple yet romantic, adorned with roses from the bouquets.

The couple currently resides in Foley and looks forward to their honeymoon at Excellence Riviera Cancun planned for their first anniversary—a celebration of their enduring love as they continue a beautiful journey together.

Thomas Hospital: Award-Winning heart care Right at Home

Thomas Hospital’s award-winning cardiovascular program provides some of the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art heart care across the Gulf Coast Region. They are home to Baldwin County’s only open-heart surgery program, as well as a newly expanded cardiac cath lab, electrophysiology lab, and other cardiovascular-focused initiatives. Thomas Hospital has been recognized as High Performing by U.S. News & World Report in its 2024-25 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings for Heart Attack and Heart Failure. They have also received a 2025 Women’s Choice Award for Heart Care.

The hospital’s commitment to meeting the needs of Alabama’s fastest-growing county has taken form in the recent $900,000 renovation of the William E. Steber Jr. Cardiovascular Lab. Increased procedure volume in the newly expanded and updated space ensures more patients can be seen promptly. This state-of-the-art lab, funded through the Thomas Hospital Foundation, expands the capability for advanced procedures.

Jordan Chaisson, MD, FHRS, noted that software and materials are constantly updated to keep ahead of the curve*. This type of lab “is rare in a relatively small town and community hospital,” he added. “A lot of people thought they had to travel to get this level of care. Now, we have state-of-theart equipment and clinicians for cardiac conditions right here.”

Interventional cardiologist Brian Dearing, MD, FACC, reports that Thomas Hospital handles more heart attacks than any hospital in Baldwin County*. The event began and ended at Fairhope’s Bay Breeze Cafe, with the 1/3-mile course winding through Downtown Fairhope. Many attendees added to the fun by dressing in creative and colorful costumes.

Aqualyn Kennedy

As a college freshman, Aqualyn was shocked when a stroke struck her out of the blue. Initially misdiagnosed, she endured two days of waiting before discovering a myxoma in her heart, leading to life-saving surgery. Diagnosed with lupus, Aqualyn became a passionate advocate for stroke survivors and those with preexisting conditions, serving as an ambassador for the American Heart Association for the past 18 years.

What advice do you have for someone who has just been diagnosed with a heart related issue? Where should they start? Your diagnosis doesn’t define your lifespan or quality of life. For 100 years, the American Heart Association has helped millions live longer, healthier lives through research. Take charge of your heart health by joining a support group or volunteering through the “You're the Cure” page. Share what you learn with family, friends, and others to inspire and support those around you.

How do you stay motivated to prioritize your heart health daily? Are there tools or habits that help?

My motivation comes from remembering how good I feel when I make healthy choices—and lots of prayer, thanking God for my health. I aim to start each day with exercise and a heart-healthy breakfast, though I’m still working on consistency. Strive to lean toward healthier choices most of the time, giving yourself grace to protect your mental health. Every day is a new opportunity to be better.

Carter Morgan

Born with aortic stenosis, Carter’s annual check-ups showed no issues until age 20, when a routine visit revealed a critical gradient and aneurysm. Dr. Peter “Trey” Pluscht III of Cardio-Thoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates with Infirmary Health, the area’s only team specializing in the Ross Procedure, performed the complex operation. This procedure replaced Carter’s aortic valve with his pulmonary valve, allowing him to avoid blood thinners and live a healthy, active life.

What role did your healthcare team play in your recovery?

Dr. Pluscht’s team and Cardiology Associates were incredible, making me feel completely confident and comfortable throughout the entire process. Their compassion and expertise made a difficult experience so much easier to face and overcome.

Do you have a message of hope for others who may feel scared or overwhelmed by their diagnosis? Stay positive and lean on friends and family. With the right care and support, you’ll get through it and come out even better on the other side.

Earl Hadley

Earl Hadley finished a pickleball game and sat down to wait for the next round when his heart suddenly went into cardiac arrest. The Fairhope Recreation Center staff quickly grabbed an AED and rushed to assist. Dr. Steven Wittmer, who was working out nearby, saw the staff with the AED and immediately came to help. After three shocks and 47 compressions, Earl regained a heartbeat. Remarkably, he had no warning signs or symptoms of heart disease.

What role did your healthcare team play in your recovery?

I woke up in the Thomas Hospital emergency room, hearing an ER nurse ask, “Earl, Earl, is that you?” Dr. Dearing explained the bad news—my widowmaker artery was 100% blocked—but the good news was Dr. Pluscht could operate that day. I received the best care I’ve ever experienced from the nurses, doctors, and professionals at Thomas Hospital.

Who were the key people in your support system during your heart disease journey?

My family, friends, church, and healthcare professionals were key supports during my heart disease journey. Their love, encouragement, and guidance, including Cardiac Rehab, were essential to my recovery.

Do you have a message of hope for others who may feel scared or overwhelmed by their diagnosis?

Put your faith in God and allow the doctors and medical staff to do what they are trained to do.

Matthew Conway

What Matthew thought was severe "heartburn" turned out to be a heart attack. His wife, a nurse practitioner, acted quickly by calling 911, and EMTs kept him alive. After an ambulance ride, a shock, and a heart cath, he left with a stent and a CHF diagnosis.

What role did your healthcare team play in your recovery? Cardiology Associates and Thomas Hospital saved my life twice, providing incredible care last March and again last July when I needed three additional stents.

Do you have a message of hope for others who may feel scared or overwhelmed by their diagnosis?

My faith has been the bedrock of this new season in my life. At first, I had a “poor me” attitude. Now, I see this as a season in my life, and I’m learning to embrace it and its challenges. I’ve found inspiration in an amazing quote by C.H. Spurgeon: “I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock of Ages.” Also, you have got to rely on family and friends. I was blessed with a wife who defines what it means to be a Proverbs 31 wife. She has helped me more than anyone. Finally, don’t be afraid to talk about your diagnosis and the fears it brings. I caused myself a lot of harm after my heart attack by trying to keep everything bottled up and acting as if it hadn’t happened.

In short, faith, family, and friends.
