FROM THE EDITOR As you are flipping through this issue of Social Eastern Shore, sweet summertime will be in full swing. Whether you are enjoying a bushwacker with friends, family time on the wharf or lounging by the pool, we hope you will bring us along.
SOCIAL
I am humbled that in this issue, my first as Editor, we will feature a community leader that I am proud to call my Mayor, and a charity that honors the legacy of a young man gone far too soon. We will introduce you to an influencer that seeks to inspire women to be more confident by sharing style, and a SuperMom that has created a medical practice centered around helping other moms find a safe space to get the help they need. We will showcase the property of a female entrepreneur that brings joy to so many with her precious pups, and we share with you the special day of a beautiful bride and her handsome groom. In People You Should Know, we will acquaint you with a determined young lady who didn’t let a global pandemic slow her down from accomplishing her dream. I hope that you feel the same joy that I do as you watch the sun set over Mobile Bay or as you wonder how God decided that the place we call home would be one of only two places in the world where one could experience a Jubilee. The Eastern Shore is as unique as the people you will see in this issue of Social Eastern Shore. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your events, and thank you for creating the spirit of The Eastern Shore.

or anyone who met Henry Alexander Wise V, the phrase “reckless abandon” is one that summed up the way he loved, the way he lived life and the way he showed the love of Christ. For anyone who never met the young man, that reckless abandon can still be felt in the legacy he left behind, through the work of the organization created in his memory, HAW5.
Lost tragically at the age of 19 to a boating accident in the summer of 2017, Henry was a popular member of the community and an alumnus of Bayside Academy in Daphne. He was an avid athlete, having played football and soccer during high school—both with great passion and an ability that made him one to watch. But more than his grades, more than his athleticism, was his personality: a charisma and love of life and people that made him magnetic. “He had an infectious personality,” says his father, Sandy Wise. “He was funny and full of life, and he was loved by everyone who had the honor of knowing him.”
12
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
Legacy Naturally, Henry’s loss was felt deeply by his family, friends and community. But keeping his memory alive—along with the way he touched everyone he met—is HAW5, created by his father. “We wanted to create a foundation to help and support emergency responders, and we later added a focus on sending kids to camps during the summer,” says Sandy. “Part of our mission is to introduce young teenagers to Christ by sending them to JH Ranch and Young Life camps. Christ was an important part of Henry’s life, and we want to give that to other young people, as well. We want them to have everlasting life in Christ as well as a strong foundation for life.”
Benefitting JH Ranch, Young Life, Bayside Academy, and KlassKids Foundation, HAW5 also supports several search and rescue organizations—which were called upon in the search for Henry’s body after the accident. “Each of these organizations makes an incredible difference, and in supporting their work, we are honoring Henry’s memory,” says Sandy In addition to the support of these organizations, HAW5 has also established an award to benefit students at Bayside Academy in their junior year. Students who receive the HAW5 award embody Henry’s spirit and the way that he lived: infectiously happy, kind toward their fellow students, actively involved in as many activities as possible, always trying to better themselves and keeping a great attitude, constantly seizing the day and living with a love for life and those around them. The student, selected by the students and staff, will receive $1,000 from the foundation
to go directly to their tuition for the next school year. The student will also sit on the HAW5 Foundation Board for one year. During that time, the student will be responsible for gifting another $1,000 to the charity of their choice. Finally, each year’s recipient presents the HAW5 Award to the next year’s recipient. Through the work it has done as a foundation and in its student awards, HAW5 has kept alive the legacy and spirit of a very special young man. And despite the fact that he was lost so young and so unexpectedly, Henry continues to make a difference in the future generations of his community. His generosity of heart can still be felt—and will continue to be, for years to come.

COMMUNITY
leader
Robin LeJeune Mayor. Wikipedia defines the word as “the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town.” With that title comes a great deal of responsibility, and for Robin LeJeune, it is one he wears with great humility and reverence. By Liesel Schmidt

s the mayor of the City of Daphne since 2020, LeJeune has been ushering the people of his community into a time of great change, navigating the challenges of a pandemic and a new normal that no one ever imagined. Even with such an important task as this, LeJeune knew that he wanted to serve the people of Daphne. “After serving two terms on the City Council and seeing the different needs of the city both internally and externally, I felt my management leadership experience could benefit the City of Daphne,” says LeJeune, who served as City Council president from 2019 through 2020. For LeJeune, the decision to enter politics was a natural one that played to his strengths and gave him a real opportunity to make a difference. “My political career has been very positive, and being able to serve my community is rewarding,” he says. “As a local business owner and Daphne resident, I saw the issues affecting local businesses, and I wanted to do something to help.”
of the community, which include building sidewalks and repaving roads. As we move forward, we also have plans for completing the Bayfront Park amphitheater and pier extension projects along with a new animal shelter. The continued beautification and infrastructure improvements throughout the city are also goals of mine.” It is his insight into the business community as well as his ties to the city that gave him such a strong position with the people, and LeJeune credits that for his election. “I was able to build up a level of trust through my service to my community—both in my involvement as a local business owner and a city councilman,” he says.
As the owner and manager of Market by the Bay Restaurant and Seafood Fresh Market, LeJeune was, indeed, a part of the business landscape of Daphne. Since turning over the business to his daughter after taking on the role of Mayor, he has implemented several projects that benefit the community— both its people and its businesses. “Opening the inclusive playground—known locally as the ‘Purple Park’—has been my proudest accomplishment so far as mayor,” he says. “It’s a playground where both individuals with special needs as well as able-bodied people can play together. We also just completed a splash pad located adjacent to the playground. In addition, we opened a fifth fire station and expanded our Public Works department to meet the growing needs JUNE / JULY 2022

During his time in office, LeJeune has helped the people of Daphne through the challenges of adjusting to a world that looks different by working as a team and keeping the best interests of the city as his priority. “I listen to my directors and staff and allow them to put their strengths and skills to use throughout the city,” he says. “I also appreciate working together and having the support of the City Council to continue improvements throughout the city.” Married with three children aged 25, 21 and 17, LeJeune loves spending time with his family and enjoys using some of his down-time to play tennis and pickleball at the new Daphne Tennis and Pickleball Complex at W.O. Lott Park. He is also an avid lover of Mardi Gras and its many festivities.

GEAUX LOCAL As spectacularly beautiful as it today, the Hotel Monteleone has undergone quite a few changes during its lifetime—and amassed quite a colorful and remarkable history, as well. Originally called the Commercial Hotel, it wasn’t until 1886 that the 64-room hotel at the corner of Royal and Iberville Streets began its rise to true greatness. Purchased that year by an immigrant named Antonio Monteleone, the hotel became a passion project for the Sicilian businessman who had left his home and high standing in society as a successful shoemaker in Sicily to pursue a greater dream in America. While the ownership of a hotel was a far cry from the shoe industry and quite a departure from the life he might have imagined when he opened a cobbler shop on Royal Street after arriving in New Orleans in 1880, Monteleone’s head for business proved that the leap was a wise investment rather than a fool’s errand. Over the next two decades, the hotel’s success led to the need for an expansion; and in 1903, 30 rooms were added to the hotel. 1908 brought with it the addition of 300 more rooms as well as a rebranding; and despite the financial panic that was engulfing the country, the newly named Hotel Monteleone soldiered on. When Antonio Monteleone passed away in 1913, his son Frank took up the mantle, bringing the hotel into a second generation of ownership. 200 more rooms were added in 1928; and a year later, the U.S. found itself in the midst of the Great Depression. Once again, widespread financial ruin could have meant the end for the hotel. Once again, it overcame the odds and emerged the crisis with its head held high, becoming one of the nation’s few family-owned hotels to withstand the Depression. Still standing proudly, the hotel went on without further change until 1954, when a fourth addition required the demolition of the original building that was replaced by a new building that included guest facilities, ballrooms, dining rooms, and cocktail lounges. Along with the monumental changes to the hotel’s structure, the ’50s also brought with them another change as ownership passed to a third generation when Bill Monteleone took over after his father passed in 1958. In 1964, Bill’s vision for the future of the hotel brought to bear additional floors, guest rooms, and a Sky Terrace that featured swimming pools and cocktail lounges.
28
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
The Hotel Monteleone has endured for more than a century, welcoming a fourth generation of ownership by the family that has made it iconic to New Orleans. Those four generations have much to be proud of, for within its walls are thousands upon thousands of hours of history—not to mention the many stories that have been written within its rooms. In fact, the Hotel Monteleone bears the distinction of being one of the few hotels dedicated as a Literary Landmark by the Friends of Libraries USA. Over the course of its lifetime, the hotel hosted numerous famous and beloved writers including Richard Ford, Tennessee Williams, Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and Truman Capote. The Hotel Monteleone has even been written into some of their well-read pages, and the self-invented tale of Truman Capote’s birth claims the Hotel Monteleone as his birthplace. Fictitious though it might be, this is only one example of the innumerable stories have made the Hotel Monteleone such a treasured part of French Quarter New Orleans and its history—and the hotel has responded in kind by naming its Literary Author Suites for its most treasured writers. History aside, the hotel is an architectural gem worthy of celebration. Much like the ornate façade that greets all who pass by, walking through the brass and glass doors into its massive foyer is to step into another world—one with tall white walls that stretch high towards heaven, massive columns, gleaming marble floors, and arched mirrors that perfectly capture and reflect the light to make the entire space feel like a jewel box, all underneath a ceiling whose elaborate gold detailing tells of countless hours of craftsmanship. Naturally, the level of hospitality matches the grandeur that is so clearly on display; and each of the 570 guest rooms is equally a reflection of excellence. The amenities appointing each of the hotel’s guest accommodations are worthy of five stars, including Keurig coffee brewers, in-room safes, refrigerators, WiFi, high definition LCD TVs, plush robes, and spacious marble and granite bathrooms. As luxurious as the guest rooms are, the 55 Luxury and Literary Author Suites boast an even higher degree of elegance, boasting walk-in glass showers, garden Jacuzzi tubs, and sofa beds in the parlors as well as some additional features that make a stay here better than a home away from home.

Of course, not every moment can be spent tucked away—plush as the rooms might be. Fortunately, the Hotel Monteleone offers a wide variety of ways to while away the hours…some of them more relaxing than others. For anyone in need of some pampering, the Spa Aria provides an entire menu of spa services including massages, nail services, facial and skin treatments, and foot therapy to soothe and pamper both the body and the mind. Re-invigorated souls will find an outlet for their energy in the 24-hour access fitness center complete with state of the art cardio machines and strength training equipment—all of which overlooks the Mighty Mississippi River and the French Quarter. Up on the roof, the crystal blue waters of the heated pool welcome a dip all year long.
No hotel worthy of note would be complete without a dining experience to compliment its finery, and the Hotel Monteleone is no exception. Offering a menu of refined dishes that bear a distinct Southern flair and truly pay homage to New Orleans and its unforgettable cuisine, Criollo is everything one might expect from a restaurant nestled within this jewel box. A gem of undeniable beauty, Criollo’s allure lies in each bite of the transcendent food served to its guests from breakfast to dinner; and its popularity speaks to its excellence. Another point of popularity—not to mention notoriety— is the Carousel Lounge. Widely loved for its fantastic cocktails, the Carousel is unique in all the ways that count and truly special enough to be unforgettable. Much like its name would imply, it features a circular central bar that orbits the bartender, all underneath the sweeps of an actual carousel. Round and round it goes, this rotating bar whose horses have been replaced by seats painted with detailed pictures, while patrons sip expertly crafted drinks that have been a draw to this very spot since it opened in the 1940s. Much like the rest of the city, the Carousel Lounge has also had a great love affair with music, hosting some of the greatest names in history while people listened, falling under its spell. For generations, the Hotel Monteleone has held tightly to the ideals of a time gone by, proving that true beauty is created by vision and uncompromising dreams. fter childbirth, there’s no one who understands the struggles of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction more than a mother. For physical therapist Kayla Mowdy, the struggles faced everyday by individuals with these very personal issues was the inspiration for creating her private practice clinic, Future Physical Therapy, in 2020. “I wanted to provide access to pelvic health physical therapy services to an area of Baldwin County that has never had a PT clinic like ours,” she says. “We exclusively treat patients with dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles and create a comfortable environment where our patients/clients can discuss their bowel, bladder, pelvic pain, and pregnancy pain issues and get relief. We help patients realize they are not alone with some pretty intimate struggles that many people don’t talk about, even with their doctor.”

"I absolutely love my work. It is a calling, not just a profession." As much of her time and attention as the clinic requires, there’s something that is even more important to Mowdy: her family. The mother of a three-and-a-half-year-old son and a new baby girl, Mowdy and her husband have been married eight years. Even with two small children at home, however, Mowdy considers her work to be important—and life changing, for both herself and her patients. “I absolutely love my work. It is a calling, not just a profession,” she says. “I help moms struggling with the impacts that pregnancy and childbirth have on our bodies. It was my patients that actually inspired me to become a mom, and it has been so rewarding.” Mowdy also sees the value in what her children get from the time away from her. “We have been blessed with several amazing daycares,” she notes. “Our children currently attend Central Christian School and their daycare Central Kids, and we love the impact their teachers have on teaching them academics, Biblical principles, and shaping them into amazing tiny humans.”
There are also some other added benefits to the equation that Mowdy knows will leave a lasting impact on her children. “I love that, because I help people through exercise, my son is learning how important it is to stay active and healthy,” she says. “My children will also grow up knowing that their dad has just as much responsibility and capability with the household chores as their mom does, so they see an active partnership.” As a mom and a business owner, Mowdy has a great deal to be proud of. “Starting a small business in a pandemic is not for the faint of heart,” she notes. “I’m a planner, and there were so many things about COVID that just could not be planned or did not go according to plan. I have gotten so much better at going with the flow—and thank goodness for that, because this two-kid thing comes with a lot more events that cannot be ‘planned.’ So we’re just ‘rolling with it’ at work and at home.”
“Rolling with it” seems to be working for her, but there are definitely things that Mowdy wanted her kids to remember about their childhood. “I want them to remember Saturday breakfasts at Waffle House and going to the zoo—Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is our favorite Saturday adventure—and the Foley Model Train Exhibit, and to many of the water adventures here in Baldwin County that we like to experience as a family,” she says. “I also want them to remember how important it is to help those who may not have access to things like new clothes or nice toys. I spend my ‘free time’ with two very important organizations, Junior League of Mobile, where I served as the fund development manager, coordinating our 37th Annual Christmas Jubilee last year, and Pleasure Island Junior Women’s Club where our mission is to ‘clothe the children’ identified as in need in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Foley schools. I am so grateful for the influence of the women in these organizations and how each of them has made me a stronger mom and businesswoman.” Books are also an important part of Mowdy’s time with her children. “We love reading books at night,” she says. “My son loves books. There are so many things in life and experiences that our children may not encounter on a regular basis, but they can be exposed to them in books.” At 33 years old, Mowdy knows she still has learning ahead, but she’s learned a great deal from her children. “The love and vulnerability of having a child has been a great lesson,” she says. “I relate a great deal to a quote by Elizabeth Stone these days: ‘Making the decision to have a child—it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.’”

A SOUTHERN SANCTUARY
W
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUMMER DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY
ith a moniker like “The Estate,” the Smeraglia family property sets up the expectation of grandeur—and grand, it is. Originally built in the late 1990’s, the main house boasts 4700 square feet sitting on 6.5 acres of picturesque landscape that is the embodiment of Southern charm. Leading up to the driveway, a one-road lane bordered by giant oak trees sets the scene, with Bradford pear trees flanking the drive to The Estate. JUNE / JULY 2022

Purchased in 2014 by Judge and Sherri Smeraglia, the home was completely remodeled with the intent of becoming a family retreat—and, with its proximity to their business and their home, it has served as just that, a getaway without the need for travel. “They initially envisioned a family retreat inspired by their travels to Napa Valley and around the world,” explains property manager Dana Goodman. “It was important that the family retreat be close to home and their family business. They also wanted the home to be a beautiful backdrop for pictures, as we take a lot of pictures for social media, marketing both the business and the farm.” The “farm” to which Goodman refers is part of the property, but also part of their business, breeding Teddybear Goldendoodles and Schnoodles. The couple also runs a Doodle prep school and dog training center neraby. The Estate was expanded in 2019 with the addition of the Chapel Barn, which became the premier destination for people traveling from all over the U.S. and abroad to pick up their Teddybear Goldendoodles, Schnoodles or Twoodles, occasions which the Smeraglias call “Gotcha Days.” Inspired by a venue in Los Angeles called the Lombardi House, the Chapel Barn is used daily as a place Smeraglia clients come to for their Gotcha Day pick-ups. They also have an exclusive in-house puppy boutique where their clients purchase puppy necessities before taking their puppies home. The Chapel Barn is also used for both private family and company events.

The Estate is nothing if not breathtaking. Exquisite finishes abound, both inside and out, and the design has distinct touches of Hollywood regency in a way that is tasteful rather than over the top. With an exterior that is modern farmhouse complete with porches and rocking chairs, the Napa and European-inspired touches include wrought iron-set double entryway doors and a beautiful arched window set with beveled glass on the second story. The front porch also boasts a side gated door with an arched design, made of mahogany with iron accents.

Inside, the home’s style is transitional with accents of modern farmhouse design, echoing the exterior. “The interior was inspired by their travels to Napa Valley, and special care was taken in choosing the lighting fixtures and chandeliers in every room, most of which come from Fisher-Gambino in New Orleans,” says interior decorator Karen Hamilton. “Mixtures of wood tones were used throughout the home with pickled, rustic woods to bring in an element of the outdoors. Matching sconces elevate the rooms by introducing additional décor and lighting. All lighting is on dimmers so the ambience can be set for every occasion, curated by as many local vendors and craftsman as we could source.” Comprising five bedrooms and four full bathrooms, the home also features a massive kitchen with a large Island and farmhouse dining table, a “Cigar Room,” a butler’s pantry and laundry combo, a large walk-in pantry, a separate dining room called the “Tea Room,” a beautiful foyer entrance with a statement staircase whose custom-made wrought iron rails boast ornamental bespoke “S” designs for the family name. Downstairs an executive office offers space for business, and the upstairs features a common living room and a “Glam Room.” 48

“The Smeraglia family is Italian, and they love to cook and spend time together at The Estate,” says Goodman. “They celebrate holidays and special occasions enjoying the comfort of the home, the grounds and especially the shady large oak trees in the back of the home near the fireplace. It’s a wonderful home for entertaining, which they love to do! The family enjoys gathering in the kitchen to cook, visiting in the Cigar Room and watching SEC football on game days. The outdoor fireplace is a favorite in the winter, and the back patio is used often for family gatherings, employee parties, and is tented each year for our annual Christmas gala. We also host a semi-annual Doodle Romp, which brings many clients and their dogs back to the Smeraglia Estate from all around the U.S. It’s beautiful here. There’s a tranquil, peaceful feeling, and we often refer to The Estate as our Southern Sanctuary.”

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAHY BY ASHLEIGH DONNELLY DESIGNS

unning in different social circles and being a year apart, Faith Kennedy and Marcus Shekouh might not have known each other in high school, but a decade later, the two were finally brought together to meet—all through the modern wonders of a dating app. Swiping right led to a coffee date, and it was only a matter of time before they became a couple.
Over the next few years of dating, that love grew even stronger, Just over a year into dating, they became even more. “Marcus proposed on June 5, 2021, by the fountain at the Fairhope pier,” says Faith, who works as a Residential Design Coordinator at Truland Homes, while Marcus is a Geotechnical Engineer for the US Army Corps of Engineers. “We were going to dinner with his brother and sister-in-law one last time before they moved to Oklahoma, and they said they wanted to stop by the pier before dinner for one last picture together there before they left. This was when I started to get suspicious, because the Fairhope pier is also special for Marcus and me, as this is where we came after our first dinner date and shared our first kiss. His brother and sister-in-law decided they wanted their picture by the fountain, so they got set up and posed as I got ready to take the photo. Little did I know that Marcus was behind me with ring in hand. Even though I was suspicious that it could happen that night, I was still in shock as I turned around and saw him down on one knee. All could say was, ‘Shut the front door, is this real?!’ which made him laugh and lose his words. Of course, I said yes, and we proceeded to call each of our families and all of our close friends before going to dinner and celebrating.” JUNE / JULY 2022

Ten months later on April 2, 2022, Faith met Marcus at the altar at Izenstone in Spanish Fort, dressed in a stunning ivory gown whose silhouette was a mixture of A-line and ball gown, with a high neck with low open back and a three-foot-long train, completed with a long, sheer veil trimmed with delicate little rhinestones and pearls. “It was everything most girls love—with pockets!” Faith describes. As perfect as she looked, however, the big reveal didn’t go quite so perfectly: “One of the doors got stuck on my ‘grand’ double-door entrance before I walked down the aisle, so that caused some giggles,” Faith laughs. “Also, we were walking back up the aisle for our recessional, and, towards the end, my veil got stuck and fell out of my hair! I just kept walking and left it behind!”

Single status—and veils—left behind, the newlyweds joined their guests for an on-site reception, where they dined on a selection that included bruschetta chicken and a NY strip steak carving station with bacon wrapped green beans, potatoes and a spring side salad. Sweetening things up, a caramel and chocolate fondue station brought some decadence to the night, and a latenight grilled cheese bar rounded out the festivities. Introducing a bit of whimsy, the four-tier cake featured alternating tiers of chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, adorned with a top border of rainbow sprinkles on each tier. “I love sprinkles so much and wanted something fun!” Faith notes. Having danced, dined, and exchanged their bites of cake, the newly married Shekouhs were sent off to honeymoon in London, England. “I had been before a few times, but Marcus hadn’t,” Faith notes. “He loves all the history and architecture as much as I do, so it was so much fun for us to explore one of my favorite cities together. As I predicted, it is now one of his favorite cities, too. Before we even left, we were already discussing a time to go back!” Now back home in Daphne, the couple is beginning their new life together— and still basking in the glow of the specialness of their wedding. “For us, it was an opportunity for our whole family to get together,” says Faith. “I have a very large family spread across multiple states, so weddings in our family turn into big family reunions, which is always so special for us since we don’t get together very often. Marcus and I started dating right before COVID, so some of my family hadn’t even had the chance to meet him, due to restrictions and everyone being so far apart. It was the same with his family, as well, and I hadn’t had the chance to meet some of them. It was very special to just see everyone together and having fun. We also had quite a few friends on both sides that one of us hadn’t met yet, or they just lived so far away that we hadn’t seen them in a while, so it was just so fun having everyone we hold dear there together and celebrating with everyone!”

Martha's Kitchen BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
A
passionate cook and lover of people, Fairhope native Martha AnnMerritt Taylor has everything that makes a great restauranteur—just without the background in hospitality or the actual desire to own a restaurant. Still, her undeniable talents in the kitchen are appreciated by those around her, and that talent has become the foundation for a different way to share her love of food with people.
Literally blossoming from the simple salami roses she used to make, Martha’s idea to start a catering company took shape in February of 2021, just after Valentine’s Day. A former secondary language arts teacher in St. Croix, St. Thomas, and Utah, Martha found herself wanting to try something new when she returned home to Fairhope—though that something was something she never saw coming. “I have been in the kitchen for as long as I can remember, learning from my mother and grandmothers,” she notes. “When I was growing up, people always asked me when I was going to start a restaurant, but a sit-in restaurant was never something that really interested me. I never considered that there were other ways of doing something I loved.” JUNE / JULY 2022

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
Officially launching while the world was still deep in a pandemic, Martha May’s Charcuterie and Catering faced some tough challenges right out of the gate. Still, Martha rose to the challenge and found how to use it to her advantage. “During COVID, I wasn’t able to do large grazing tables for gatherings, but I honestly think that was probably the best thing for me,” she says. “I push myself really hard to make people happy, especially my clients. I’m not sure I would have been ready to do 400 person parties right off the bat, but when COVID restrictions lifted, I had had plenty of practice and experience and was ready to cater larger events. I also think my business survived COVID because while restaurants were closed, I was still able to deliver a little bit of luxury or something special for date nights or family nights in. Birthdays and date nights were actually really big for me during COVID, because people still wanted to do something special, even though they couldn’t go out, and not everyone loves to cook.” Talent aside, it took a great deal of courage for Martha to start her own company. Fortunately, she had some great inspiration for becoming a boss. “My mom could tell I just wasn’t really 72
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
happy with my current career, and she encouraged me to try pursuing something I was really passionate about,” notes Martha, who will soon be opening a brick-and-mortar in Daphne. “She said to try doing something that would really make me happy. I had never really thought of doing something just because it brought me joy. I took that advice and ran with it. This business would not be possible without my family's constant advice and emotional support.” Family is actually something deeply rooted in the company—so much so that many of Martha’s family members are also part of the business in some way. “My mom does anything and everything and goes above and beyond,” Martha explains. “My dad does all of my legal work, and my brother developed my website. My sister Patricia and partner Stephen put up with me and my tiredness and crankiness and venting , and they also jump on any other task I ask them to do. They’re always happy to help, and that means so much to me. My stepdad also gave me the inside scoop on commercial appliances—like what to buy or not buy. And my fur baby, Kiwi, keeps me sane.”
Being the community-minded woman that she is, Martha finds ways to give back and pay forward her success—especially in supporting other women-owned businesses. “I work regularly with Southern Charm Picnic Co and absolutely love their work,” she says. “The owner, Monica Gray, has become one of my closest friends. We have so many exciting projects coming up. A few other amazing female-led companies I love working with are Better Together Laser Artistry for all of my signs, Dana Lee Davis Photography, Lily’s Rose Photography, Toni and Goode Weddings, Jenna Laine Weddings, The Veranda at The Preserve, Anonyme Cruises, and Little Point Clear.” Martha also donates to many local children’s charities, including the Bay Affair, a fundraiser for Bayside Academy. “That was really fun for me since it’s my high school alma mater,” she explains. “I have also donated charcuterie boards and gift cards to several school sports teams and PTA fundraisers. As a former teacher, students and school employees alike have a special place in my heart. I’m an animal lover, as well, so I personally donate monthly to the Humane Society, which is an amazing cause.” As long and hard as the work can be sometimes, Martha’s love for her work is clearly evident in all that she does. “I really love getting to use my creativity and my love for food—especially cheese!” she says. “I work insane hours, but I really enjoy what I do. I also love being my own boss. It has all been a huge learning curve, and continues to be every day, but it has been so worth it. Most of all, I love getting to share my art in a way that people can enjoy not only with their eyes, but also with their taste buds and stomachs.”
