IMPACT & GIVEBACK
BLOOMS

BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
P
ersonal experience is often the greatest motivator, the greatest WHY behind a mission. For Leslie Presson, the experience of going through cancer and finding herself surrounded by love and support as she faced her battle was something that planted a seed in her—both literally and figuratively—for an idea that would, in much the same way, show others just how much they are loved.
After a diagnosis of breast cancer in the fall of 2019, Presson began a treatment course of 15 rounds of chemo that lasted nearly a year, knowing that, the more support and prayers she had, the better. Sharing her diagnosis with friends and family, Presson received a deluge of cards and gifts, as well as encouraging phone calls and text messages. But it was the flowers that would most impact her, later becoming the impetus for her outreach organization, HOPE Blooms. “There was never a day that I did not have fresh flowers on my kitchen island that were a gift of
encouragement from someone!” Presson recalls. “Some were fresh flowers that a friend had cut from her yard, others were flowers that were picked up at the grocery store, and others were sent by family and friends and delivered by the wonderful local florists in Fairhope. There were several times when we just found flowers left at our front door! I can’t begin to describe the joy that these flowers—these gestures of encouragement—gave to me. I don’t think I ever really took these kind acts for granted, but I did start looking forward to getting them! They brought hope. Hope was something I needed to cling to. Each time I looked at the flowers, I was reminded that I was—and am—loved. Someone was thinking about me. I was not alone on this journey. MAY 2022
15
That feeling was one that Presson wanted to share, and so, as treatment came to an end, she began to feel the importance of using her journey to help others. “The memories of the flowers that I’d received kept popping up in my head and heart as big blessings not to forget,” she recalls. “Soon, I heard of a friend who was going through a tough life situation. Although I might typically send a card, my first thought was, Take her flowers! That was when HOPE Blooms begin to take root in my heart. I thought, Everyone who is going through something big in life needs flowers! I knew of something in Memphis where they were repurposing flowers after weddings or big events and taking them to people in nursing homes, hospitals, and people that could use some joy. After reading about them, I thought this was something we could do right here in our wonderful community of Fairhope!” After much prayer, Presson enlisted the help of her friend, Dorothy Lagarde, and approached Wildflowers, a flower shop with whom she had previous connections, about forming a partnership. “Stephanie and Garrett have always been wonderful to work with,” Presson notes. “I went to Stephanie and asked if she would be interested in partnering with us so that we could repurpose their flowers after events and give them away. They were thrilled with the idea.” And so, HOPE Blooms was officially created. “The name HOPE Blooms came from what I wanted the ministry to be,” says Presson. “To bring joy and hope in dark times. I want people to know that hope can grow and bloom during your toughest times in life.”
16
SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
Since launching in October 2020, HOPE Blooms has given away approximately 2,000 repurposed arrangements to recipients throughout the community, delivering messages of encouragement in the form of colorful blooms. A 501c3 organization, HOPE Blooms depends on donations and various fundraisers to fund the purchase of storage containers, printed cards given away with the arrangements, ribbon, and other supplies. Aside from funding, their greatest challenges so far have been logistical. “We would love it if wedding planners and brides would let us know when they plan their weddings so we can set up teams,” says Presson. “However, a lot of times it is at the last minute that they call to donate their flowers.
Having space to repurpose is also an issue we face. We have been repurposing in my house on Mondays, but we’ve really outgrown that! We’re looking for a space where we can store our jars and flower cooler and still have room to repurpose the arrangements.” What HOPE Blooms accomplishes through its work is, of course, more than just delivering flowers. “It’s a community working together for the common good: to bring joy!” says Presson. “It brings so much joy to us to see the smiles on the faces of the recipients! There’s just joy all around, from the volunteers to the recipients. We’ve even heard from some of our recipients that they, in turn, have given flowers away after it made them feel so good. Giving begets giving.”

E
lected in November of 2020, Mayor Sherry Sullivan came into office in one of the greatest times of turmoil in recent history. Uncertainty over COVID and the many ways it would affect the future were all weighing heavily on people—both on a national level as well as a local one. Still, Sullivan stepped into office, taking on the mantel of responsibility to the people of her community with grace and humility, knowing full well that she had a big job to do and a heavy burden to carry.
Having worked for the City of Fairhope for almost 17 years, Sullivan was hardly new to city politics, nor was she unfamiliar with the needs of Fairhope’s people. In her work, she was responsible for communications, events, the senior center, and the museum and took over the recreation department. She was also the project manager for the Fairhoper’s Community Park rebuild, Fairhope Soccer Complex and recently served as Director of Governmental Affairs and Economic Development for Riviera Utilities, trying to find ways to help government work for and with the people to help better their lives. “While working for the city, I also served on the leadership team during Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina,” Sullivan says. “I coordinated services for our residents and utility crews and helped to set up a medical unit in the Fairhope Rec Center gym during Katrina. I have also been involved with numerous community organizations. So many organizations contribute to the quality of life in Fairhope, and I am proud to have served with them.” That civic pride was at the heart of her run for office—and the reason she won. “I have always loved Fairhope and want to make it better,” she says. “I believe that I was elected because people liked the fact that I have worked for Fairhope, so I know a lot about our community and how government operates.”
MAY 2022
27
The last 18 months have been incredibly busy and, Sullivan admits, “a little overwhelming at times with the challenges of COVID, supply chain issues, staffing, etc. But I love serving and helping people, and being mayor allows me to do both.” Challenges have indeed come—not only with those affecting the entire nation, but also with some closer to home. “Fairhope’s rapid growth is our greatest challenge right now,” Sullivan says. “Growth is inevitable, but protecting our quality of life in Fairhope is a top priority for me and the City Council. The city must look for innovative solutions and development regulations to keep up with the increasing rate of growth, pressures on our environment, and the need to protect our community for generations to come.” Infrastructure, growth, stabilizing the work force and parks and recreation have all been part of Sullivan’s agenda and larger goal for her time in office, and she’s made inroads on some of them over the past year and a half. “Passing a budget on time, securing a GOMESA grant to help improve the Triangle Property, and opening a Symbol Health Clinic for the employees are all things that my administration has accomplished so far, but we’re far from done,” she says. Last year, Sullivan held strong in the face of a hurricane that set its sights on the area—and in doing so, she helped the community weather the storm. “Just maintaining all the essential services while navigating hurricane recovery, at the same time as a pandemic and staffing issues, is a win in my book,” she notes. Over the next two years, Sullivan will continue to lead Fairhope with the same gentle guidance, the same hope to bring it to its best self for future generations.

illions of people across the U.S. are uninsured, lacking the health care coverage that they so desperately need to afford the treatment they need to stay healthy—and oftentimes stay alive. For Laura Vendetti, being uninsured meant that her diagnosis of stage II breast cancer in September of 2018 brought her face-to-face with the reality that she might not be able to get the aggressive treatment that could save her life. And yet, the woman with the heart of a warrior and the soul of a diva never wavered in her belief that she would get through it and come out stronger the other side. “I have warrior DNA and was raised by WWII veterans,” says Vendetti. “I never doubted I had the discipline and fight to win. Thankfully, Vendetti gained the support of Victory Health Partners—which proved to be a crucial weapon in her arsenal. “They got me diagnosed immediately. But I was uninsured, so lived in silence with the tumor for four months,” she recalls. “Victory gave me hope by giving me an appointment and showed me dignity the moment I walked in. Ultimately, they brought me healing by getting me to an oncology team. I told them, ‘I will do anything, anytime, anywhere, and I happen to have public speaking skills!’ I owe them my life.” MAY 2022

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
Four days after her first chemo session, Victory called on her for her first speaking engagement, making her a spokesperson for the organization which would prove to have a profound effect on her listeners. But for Vendetti, making an impact— and leaving an impression—seems to be ingrained in her personality. “I believe the world is but a stage, so I went into character on treatment days,” she says. “I would strut across the treatment room floor as if I was on a fashion runway, choose a chair, and settle in to meditate. Few people saw me without a wig! In fact, I wore a blonde wig into surgery. Radiation was five days a week, and the treatment room had low lighting, so I brought a lavender eye pillow and pretended I was getting a spa treatment.” Still, Vendetti had a secret: “I was more afraid of the treatment than of the cancer and death itself.” Six rounds of chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, and 24 rounds of radiation brought her to remission in March of 2019—and four days after her last treatment, she once again spoke as an ambassador for Victory. In 2021, Vendetti reprised her role as speaker to an audience of 1100 at the Mobile Civic Center. “It was a powerful experience,” she says. “It's important for people to know what the uninsured American looks like! A lot of us are normal, hardworking people who either work for a corporation but do not have enough hours to be insured or are

I want to inspire people to donate to Victory and spread the word to people “I was an open water swimmer before my diagnosis and got side lined during treatment,” who, like myself, are hoping for a solution.” she notes. “I joined a pool and discovered the pain from radiation was breaking up with each Three years of being cancer-free have come stroke, my muscle was coming back, and my with a great deal of reflection—not to mention self-esteem was being restored. During the countless realizations for Vendetti. “The biggest lesson I learned was that the body is a machine!” pandemic, I started swimming in rivers because the beach and pools were closed. I just kept she says. “Because my body was temporarily incapacitated and I refused pain meds, I learned swimming, and a Facebook friend in South Florida noticed. He said, ‘You should be a to meditate out of the pain. I learned that the mermaid!’ I thought it was a joke!” mind, body, and spirit are separate things, but they still work together.”
That joke turned into a serious pursuit for Vendetti, and now she teaches others to be just as free in the water. A scuba divemaster, open water endurance swimmer, and standup paddle enthusiast, she has added part-time work as a manatee guide and mermaid instructor in Crystal River, Florida to her repertoire. “I offer lessons on swimming and diving in a mermaid fin and tail!” she says with a delighted twinkle in her eye. “It can be as simple as a 30-minute session playing around in the shallow end and photo op or diving as deep as 30 feet in open waters with no mask on a breath hold. It's a Free Dive certification, so there’s a lot to it! My students love it because it's challenging, athletic, creative, a great work out, and—most of all—fun! I've certified a lot of mermen also. It's a 'bucket list' item for some people and a lifestyle for others.” Clearly, battling cancer has not dulled Vendetti’s love of life, nor her flair for the dramatic. Rather, it has reminded her that life is short and that every moment should be treasured and lived without limit. And that, sometimes, mermaid tails are a must.

BELLE MAISON
A single-family home on risers, the family has created a sanctuary at the shore, an escape from the busyness of daily life and a retreat for gathering together. Painted a soft, barely-there color of green, the board and batten façade is like an homage to their roots—one of its points of charm. “Our family is in the lumber and timber business in Lee and Chambers Counties in Alabama, and the color of the cottage reminded us of pine trees. We thought it only fitting to name the cottage ‘The Knotted Pine’ in honor of our dad, who started the business in the late fifties,” explains the matriarch of the current generations of the family. Boasting numerous windows, the home certainly capitalizes on the view. Under the second floor, the riser space offers storage as well as covered entertaining space, perfect for post-beach hang outs or picnics. “The cottage is nice and strong and very attractive but not overdone, which suits our family,” the owners observe. “The concrete entertainment space below the house has a front-seat view of the community pool, and we have plenty of space for grilling and Lowcountry boils.”

BELLE MAISON
Inside, the home is roomy enough to accommodate everyone—all adults and grandchildren—with 5,000 square feet comprising seven bedrooms and six-anda-half baths as well a third-floor bunk room in addition to living spaces. “One of the things that my family loves about this property is that everyone has privacy, space and comfort,” say the owners. “That was a major factor in our family purchasing a beach cottage to share.” With its whisper-soft use of grays, whites, and creams, the color story at Knotted Pine is minimal, employing texture and pattern to create any visual interest. Again, the cottage’s moniker is given a nod, as walls, ceilings and floors throughout are either wooden plank or wood-look, which gives the interior spaces a particular warmth in addition to the natural light spilling through its multitude of windows. Located on the third floor, the main living spaces of kitchen, dining, and family rooms epitomize coastal chic, with comfortable furniture in neutral tones and an open-floor plan ideal for large gatherings.

Kitted with custom white cabinetry crowned with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a large island with bar seating, the kitchen was clearly designed for entertaining. “It’s the perfect kitchen for all of us to cook and spend time together,” the owners note. Gray glass backsplash tiling adds another layer of texture, and massive pendant lights above the island light up the space. The finishes—the furnishings, the fixtures, the color ways, the various accents—all are specifically chosen for this beach life, this home away from home, by Kelly Hollis Crabtree of Hollis Interiors. “Upon purchasing the cottage, we immediately enlisted Kelly, who is not only our decorator but also a friend of ours,” explain the owners. “She did a tremendous job and pleased the entire family. In addition to the cottage, Kelly has also remodeled five condos and a hunting lodge for different family members, and she is in process of remodeling yet another condo in Orange Beach for a family member.”

A gathering space at its soul, the cottage’s third-level bunk room sleeps six, while the bedrooms are spacious and luxurious. Bathrooms boast beautiful fixtures and materials, designed to feel vacation-like instead of merely serviceable. This is a home to be enjoyed, to be looked forward to. And for the family, this home checks all the boxes. “We love our cottage and the Orange Beach area,” say the owners, “and we are so very blessed to be able to enjoy our time as a family in this way.”

THE GAME OF
STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAHY BY ASHLEIGH DONNELLY DESIGNS
W
hen Hannah Mikkelsen and Adam Chandler met as college freshman at Troy University in 2015, neither was ready to get into a serious relationship—despite the fact that there was undeniable interest on both sides. Over the next three years, the two built a strong foundation of friendship, and during their senior year, they took the leap into more. “I know this man through and through, and he knows me just as well,” says Hannah, who now works as a chiropractic assistant, while Adam tends bar. “It just made us love each other even more.”
Over the next few years of dating, that love grew even stronger, and Adam surprised Hannah with the question that would change their relationship forever. “One night, we were at home, and we had been planning to play a date night game we had seen online,” recalls Hannah of that life-altering day in September of 2020. “COVID shutdowns were still happening in Birmingham, and we were looking for anything to do to have some fun. We had planned to go to the store and get some things for the game, which included categories of something in a favorite color, something to drink, something to eat, an activity to do, and something to wear. We were having a great time, and we got to the last category: Something to wear. I turned around and pulled out the shirt I bought him, and when I turned back to him, he was holding an engagement ring! He really had me beat in that category!”

Just over a year later, on December 18, 2021, Hannah wore a fit-and-flare Essence of Australia gown with tattoo-like lace sleeves and an open back as she walked down the aisle at Hatcher Farms Venue in Mobile, Alabama. Chased inside by the rain, the ceremony space was nevertheless everything the couple dreamed of; and after being pronounced married, the couple joined their guests for a reception in the space that was seamlessly transitioned for party time. Sharing the day with 120 of their closest family and friends—many of whom had watched their relationship grow from friendship to love—the couple enjoyed some tender and unforgettable moments. “My dad passed away in April of 2020, so my mom walked me down the aisle,” says Hannah. “It was beyond special for both of us. I also shared my first dance with my mom. We started out with ‘I Hope You Dance’ because she always associated that song with me growing up. We had our tender moment, and then halfway through the song, I had the DJ mash it up and change to ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy’ by Toby Keith because, when I was growing up, that was our song. She laughed until she cried, and she was totally surprised by it—which is exactly what I wanted.” After dining on a buffet of Southern favorites, the couple cut into a three-tiered cake with layers of strawberry and almond, covered in vanilla buttercream. Accompanied by a red velvet groom’s cake, both confections were made by a close friend of Hannah’s mother. With wishes of happiness and a future filled with love, the newly married Chandlers were sent off to honeymoon in Colorado and spend their first Christmas together as a family.

ALLYSON PEARCE Supermom folding clothes, not do my hair, but I never miss the moments I can grab with my girls. I am lucky to be flexible since I am my own boss, so I have never missed a game or program at school or whatever they have ever needed. I try to live by being flexible, be able to laugh at yourself, and enjoy the little moments!”
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
O
Over the past 24 years, Allyson Pearce has built a solid career as an attorney, practicing law in the areas of bankruptcy, criminal, and real estate throughout south Alabama. As the owner of her own law firm for 22 of those 24 years in the legal profession, Pearce has learned what it takes to create a successful business: the long hours, the thankless work, the sacrifices. While she has a lot on her plate as a busy professional, she still understands the importance of putting equal time into her family—especially her two teenaged daughters.
“Being a working mom—especially an attorney— is hard,” she admits. “I am always asked how I do it all, but the best answer to that question is that I don't. I may let the dishes go, not get around to
Even with the often taxing schedule she keeps with her law practice—and now, also as a real estate agent in partnership with her husband—Pearce knows that she’s setting an incredible example for her daughters. “I feel that being a working mom enriches my children's lives because I have a passion for helping people, and they see that,” she says. “They see that there is more to life than just serving your own needs. There’s a bigger picture. But they also see that I never gave up on the path that I wanted to pursue. It’s sometimes a struggle for me, balancing family and work; but I hope they learn life lessons through my being a working mom. I want them to see that they can create their own financial independence and contribute to society.” As an attorney, Pearce does a great deal of listening to her clients, and that ability to listen is something that serves her in her personal life, as well. “Every day in my work, I have to work with clients and figure out solutions to whatever their problem may be,” says Pearce, who operates five offices of Pearce Law Firm. “The ability to listen is important to being an attorney because you are MAY 2022

I love to listen to my girls or my husband when we have a problem and find ways to solve it together.” Being the strong woman that she is, Pearce has a lot to be proud of— both in her career and in her family life. “I’m proud of the fact that I own my own practice and have successfully run that business for almost 25 years,” she says. “I think that being so independent has made me a better mother to my girls, encouraging them to think and make decisions for themselves and to stick by those decisions. If there are consequences to a bad decision, they have to live with those consequences. I have applied that same mindset to my business, as well, and it has made me a better businesswoman. As an attorney, you see people at their worst and desperate to escape from the consequences of what they have done. Being able to solve these problems and helping people is my biggest passion.” From her girls, Pearce has learned to stop and take in the little moments and to be more present. “I’ve also learned to sit down, talk, and listen more,” she adds. “You will learn so much, and things are not always what they seem to be on the surface. We talk about things in our day, and I’ve stayed close to my girls because we talk about all the little things as well as the big things." Being present—and always being there for her girls—is something that is incredibly important to Pearce, something that she hopes they remember throughout their lives. “Every ballgame, every school function, every break, I spent them all with them,” she says. “Every decision was based on being there for them.” There are also some principals that she and her husband have instilled in their daughters that will serve them well as they go out into the world and become women. “We taught them to be thankful for what they have, to practice what they preach, and that honesty is the best policy,” she says. “I want them to carry these principals, and I want them to remember always that family is the most important thing in their lives beside God.” 76
