COUNSELOR The

We all have dreams for our lives, hopes that we long to see realized. For some, those dreams include owning their own businesses and forging their own paths, but they need guidance and direction to follow the path that will lead to success.

“Offering that guidance is part of Melvin Washington’s daily mission as the Regional Director of the Small Business Development Center at the University of South Alabama. He provides one-on-one, confidential counseling to entrepreneurs across six counties in South Alabama, from existing to aspiring small business owners seeking to grow or start a business. “We are a small, cohesive team,” Washington says of the SBDC. “I work out of Innovation Portal in Downtown Mobile and have a strong relationship with the University of South Alabama. Other members of the team include Yolanda Johnson and Gerald Dunlop, and together, we are fully committed to responding to the needs of our clients and providing the highest quality service. I love meeting with and assisting so many energized, dedicated, and committed individuals with great business ideas.”

COMMUNITY
MAY 2023 15

Washington’s own path is one that shows how important dedication is. The Alabama native graduated from Howard University with an electrical engineering degree, then moved to New York City, where he earned a master’s in business administration from New York University in addition to completing the Administration Executive Education Program at Wharton School of Business. He has held executive level positions in finance, operations, and strategy and planning in the financial services and telecommunications sectors at top tier firms including AT&T, Salomon Brothers, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, and Citibank. Washington was also very active in the community, serving as CEO/ Executive Director of a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) called Project Enterprise, a micro-lending organization supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses in under-resourced communities in New York City. Eventually, life led him back home to Alabama in 2011. “When I moved back to Mobile, my goal was to fulfill my passion and commitment to community economic development by assisting entrepreneurs and small businesses in the area,” he says. “I became aware of the vacant regional manager’s position at the University of South Alabama, met with the leaders in our home office at the University of Alabama, and started in August 2013.”

Since taking on his role with the SBDC, Washington's expertise has proven him an invaluable asset to the organization—as has his passion for his work. “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, creating jobs and wealth for many at all levels of society,” he says. “The support that the SBDC provides is critical to their long-term growth and survival. I take tremendous pride in the services that we offer them, in knowing that my clients have successfully fulfilled their vision and that I helped make a difference in their lives.”

As fulfilling as the work is to Washington, it can sometimes seem like an uphill battle. “Managing the number of entrepreneurs and small business owners seeking assistance can be incredibly challenging,” he notes. “We have seen a significant increase in the number of businesses seeking assistance since COVID. With this in mind, as we move into the future, I am hoping to see the SBDC expand capacity to support and assist even more entrepreneurs and small businesses.”

In 1985, Bayside Academy celebrated its first Bay Affair, and it has remained an annual event ever since. Parents, alumni, sponsors, and friends of Bayside gathered again this year to raise funds for the school through silent and live auctions in an atmosphere of fun and fellowship. Guests enjoyed great food, cocktails, live music and dancing coordinated along with the theme, Rock the Yacht.

"In order to become the 1%, you must do what the other 99% won't!"

JUSTIN LAW, MBA

"closely held business owner" planning space. My value prop is a relational partnership to coach clients through making the most optimal decisions in every area of their financial life. The same offering applies to my business planning clients. This area includes such things as providing turnkey, electronic valuations through a partnership with a third-party organization called BizEquity; designing business continuity instructions; employee retention planning; coordination of business finances with personal finances; and ultimately guidance through exit-planning strategies (insider transfers, family succession planning, and 3rd party sales).

WHAT IS SOMETHING, SUCH AS A MOTTO OR BIT OF PHILOSOPHY, THAT DRIVES YOU EVERY DAY?

"In order to become the 1%, you must do what the other 99% won't!" This encompasses my belief that true success is not defined by how smart you are, but rather your drive and grit to outwork your pears. This was ingrained in me at a young age by my late father.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT HELPING YOUR CLIENTS?

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR INDUSTRY?

The financial services industry is heavily saturated and becoming extremely homogenized. Most firms have access to the same or similar products. Financial success lies in the ability to identify blind spots that clients don't see coming. Will a plan/strategy work if markets are good? if markets are bad? if inflation is high? if inflation is low? if someone dies young? if someone outlives their life expectancy? if they get disabled? if they get sued? The litmus test for advice should not be what is the "best case scenario" outcome...it should be how does the advice responds to a variety of "stress factors" that can and do happen to clients every day!

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE FOR YOUR CLIENTS?

My practice offers macroeconomic wealth advisory solutions to clients in both the personal planning space as well as the

My greatest fulfillment comes from the experience of serving as my client's trusted advisor. I am blessed to tag along for the ride that includes all the positive life events such as marriages, births of children, promotions, and career advancements, purchasing homes, and business startups. However, I am usually one of the first people my clients call when bad things happen also. Having that opportunity to serve my clients through the times of crisis and uncertainty is perhaps the most rewarding part of my business.

WHAT ORGANIZATIONS OR CHARITIES ARE YOU THE MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT AND WHY?

I am a passionate supporter of both the Baller Dream Foundation and the American Cancer Society. My childhood experience of seeing my maternal grandmother go through and succumb to a very traumatic cancer diagnosis has inspired me to partner with these two nonprofits and help them pursue their respective missions!

Lawyers in private practice advise and represent their clients in a wide variety of legal matters. In civil practice, they may prepare or review legal documents, such as wills, trusts, and deeds for individuals, or various types of contracts between two or more individuals or businesses on behalf of their clients. They may represent either the plaintiff or the defendant in a legal dispute, either by going to court or by settling the dispute out of court.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE FOR YOUR CLIENTS?

My practice includes estate planning, trusts, wills, estates, guardianships, probate, real property, and business law. I also help parties settle civil lawsuits and disputes by serving as a mediator.

WHAT IS IT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY?

The motto of the Alabama State Bar Association is “Lawyers Render Service.” When I was president of this association, I traveled all over the state meeting and working with other lawyers. It was very gratifying to see all the ways that lawyers are serving their communities and clients.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT HELPING YOUR CUSTOMERS OR CLIENT

I am very thankful to have found a profession that I love. I enjoy meeting people, helping them solve problems, and seeing them leave with a sense of peace.

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOUR INDUSTRY?

The mortgage industry is fast paced, ever changing, unbelievably stressful and more satisfying than I could have imagined.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE FOR YOUR CLIENTS?

I provide purchase money and refinance mortgage loans secured by single family homes, condominiums, mobile homes, tiny homes, barndominiums and other types of properties which are utilized as primary or secondary residences or investment properties.

WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY?

I love the fact that I have helped 1,000's of families and individuals to get started in generational wealth building.

WHAT IS SOMETHING, SUCH AS A MOTTO OR BIT OF PHILOSOPHY, THAT DRIVES YOU EVERY DAY?

Every single day that I wake up, I pray that I can serve someone that day. I believe that everyone deserves an answer. Whether the answer is what they expected or something they were not expecting, they deserve an answer. Deliver good news fast and bad news faster.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF JUST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

If I had to start over in this industry, I would tell myself to stay away from negativity, keep every name, phone number, and email address you come across and to think of what you do as service and NOT a JOB. Give more, TAKE LESS.....

FLYING HIGH AND TOUCHING LIVES

Wanting to keep his memory alive and also pay tribute to his life and his passionate love for serving and the outdoors, his parents, Amber and Kelly Johnson, founded the Fly High Goose Foundation in October of 2020— named, of course, in honor for their son, whose nickname “Goose” was used more than his given name.

Sudden,

untimely death is always a tragedy and an incredibly heavy loss—especially in the cases where those lost are young and in the place where life should have been just beginning. That was the case for Adrian “Goose” Johnson, who was killed in a car accident on January 19, 2019, a mere two days before his 20th birthday and only months away from graduating from college.

“He was an avid outdoorsman with a true vision for his future,” says Adrian’s mother, Amber. “He also had a heart for giving and volunteering, so we thought what better way to continue his legacy than to create a foundation that provides outdoor opportunities and experiences for our local youth. We also support other organizations by donating to achieve the same outcome.”

IMPACT & GIVEBACK
MAY 2023 37

In partnership with Hope Outdoors, a ministry working with special needs individuals and providing them outdoor experiences such as hunting and fishing at no cost to them or their family, FHGF furthers their mission of outreach through donations raised through their website as well as events like their annual clay shoot and their t-shirt design fundraiser in October and January, respectively. “Our goal is to make a donation at least every quarter,” says Amber. “I would estimate we easily work with—and foster relationships with—100 people a year through our work in the community! Since FHGF was started in 2020, we have touched well over 250 people. This includes the BCHS fishing team, BCHS shooting team, Loxley Elementary School 2nd graders, Bay Minette Elementary School 2nd graders, the Baldwin County Boys Ranch, and the young anglers that have the opportunity to participate in Roy Martin Young Angler Tournament.”

As a newly created nonprofit, exposure has been a great obstacle for FHGF to overcome. “We are focused on our local community of North Baldwin, but we would like to expand and give back to all of Baldwin County because the county as a whole has been so supportive to us,” Amber says. “We have big plans for 2023—we are hopeful that we will be able to provide a scholarship opportunity in the very near future.” We are so excited that we will be able to donate $13,600 this year for renovations to John White Park in Bay Minette for (2) soccer/football combo goals and a space for (2) practice fields that will serve the community’s youth.

Most recently, FHGF made a $5,000 donation to Buckaroo Foundation, which supports Buckaroo Barn. “They do great things with hippo therapy,” says Amber. “Buckaroo Barn’s founder, Kristye Chastang, passed away just a short time ago, and to know her was to love and admire her, so this donation was extra special. Her work and the barn’s work will continue to impact lives for a very long time to come, and we’re so honored to be able to help further that impact.

“Our sole purpose is to honor Goose’s life, so if it would make him proud, we consider our hard work gratifying,” Amber continues. “If it was important to him, it is important to us. I’d like to think that our community impact has been a positive one. The FHGF strives to provide support to our community with a focus on youth and the outdoors. When a child has an opportunity to experience an activity in the great outdoors, it is the truest of freedoms. Providing hunting, fishing, and learning life skills experiences for children and individuals with disabilities lies at the core of the work we do, and we strive to have an impact one experience or donation at a time. Giving back to our community and to others was a way of life for Goose, and this is our way of continuing his legacy every day.”

OWNER OF HAMMER & STAIN

I was born locally and raised in Baldwin County. I am a proud mother of a beautifully blended family of six, and my husband, children and I are happy to call Fairhope home. Spending many years of my career as a bookkeeper, it became clear my calling was to one day own a small business. In 2019, I acquired my first laser and started a handmade business of selling art and creating custom signs. In 2021, I expanded my business with the purchase of Hammer and Stain Eastern Shore located in Daphne. Eastern Shore’s very own paint and sip location offers its patrons a unique experience including public and private classes, birthday parties, showers, team building events, etc. Our goal is to offer an entertaining escape from everyday living in a relaxed environment while inspiring creativity to its participants.

At Prodisee Pantry’s Fill the Plate Luncheon, attendees celebrated 20 years of dedicated volunteers providing food and hope as well as looking towards continuing to “fill the plate” of Baldwin County’s hungry in the future. The organization’s focus this year is “What does hunger mean?” Over lunch, supporters watched videos of area school children ranging from elementary to high school giving their powerful perspective on the impact of food and hunger.

Holly Johnson

The Chief Financial Officer of Coastal Growers, LLC in Atmore, Alabama, Holly Johnson oversees the financial operations of the corporation and its peanut shelling facilities, bringing with her an extensive knowledge of financial management and business strategies. Johnson is a graduate of USA with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Major in Accounting as well as a CPA—all of which make her an incredibly valuable asset for an organization that oversees and deals with operations and contracts in multiple states.

As much as they depend on her at work, there are people in her life who need her even more: her husband of 12 years, Joseph—more widely known as “Joby”—and their combined five children. While most of them are all grown now and establishing their own lives and their own families, Johnson has been an important part of raising not only her own children, but also those that came to her through marriage. Now, at 45, she is a wife, a mother, and even a grandmother—though a young one, at that, having become one at 38.

With such a big family to raise, there has always been a great deal of juggling—both when Johnson was on her own and during her years of marriage. But even with all the juggling and trying to find balance, she has never regretted being a working mom.

“It’s a challenge, especially in my chosen career path,” she admits. “Accounting can lead to so many career options, but it seems to hold true that no matter what path you take, you always run into a ‘season’ that requires a great deal of sacrifice when it comes to time. In the corporate world, we typically endure audit and tax season the first quarter of every year. We also always have month end deadlines."

SUPERMOM
MAY 2023 49

“It’s always been a challenge to meet all those deadlines at work, but still feel like I am a present and involved parent,” she continues. “Sports and extra-curricular activities generally kick off when we are at our busiest. I always made my best effort to make sure my kids were as involved as they wanted to be. The boys always played baseball or soccer, and my daughter was in competitive gymnastics before she transitioned to cheerleading in high school. We were always on the road. To this day, they all talk about how we ate at Chick Fil-A two or three nights a week."

“Luckily, I had my husband, mom, and motherin-law to help out in getting kids to activities if I couldn’t get away from work,” Johnson goes on. “When they say it takes a village, they are not lying. I couldn’t have done all of this without help.”

“All of this”—going to school, building her career, sitting for her CPA and putting in the long hours at the office—has been important not only for Johnson’s own self-worth, but also for the example she has always wanted to set for her children.

“My kids understand the importance of work ethic,” she says. “They have seen me struggle to get things done, and they know that I make sure it gets done right. I have always been very open with my kids, and they know that if you want something, you must put in the work. We don’t believe in handouts, and we don’t believe it’s anyone’s responsibility but our own to make sure we are successful. I was a single mom for many years, and I made sure that, no matter what, the kids always had everything they needed. It was a struggle, but they know that I provided, I was present, and I loved them.”

Johnson’s love for her children is something they will carry with them throughout life, but there are some other things she wants them to always remember: “All of those times that I stood in their doorways talking to them and being the ‘drill sergeant,’” she laughs. “I have tried really hard to talk things out with my kids, help them understand the why’s, how’s and what-if’s, as well as the consequences. I can go on for hours when I am really passionate, and there is nothing I am more passionate about then my kids. I hope they say something one day and have the epiphany that they sound ‘just like their mother.’”

There are, of course, some special traditions in the Johnson household. “Christmas Day is our most treasured tradition,” she says. “I always cook a huge breakfast—and, now that the kids are older, brunch. We go all-out with everyone’s favorite casseroles, breakfast dishes, etc. My favorite thing now that they are older is for me to fill their stockings. We have had to move to boxes, because I just go overboard! I think they look forward to the stockings more than anything. My focus is on making sure our kids still have the magic of that day. As they get older, that can slip away a little.

“We also host Alabama football nights at our house,” she continues. “I have to make the same food every time, and we enjoy the game together. Everyone knows when Coach Saban is talking that we listen. I am a huge Nick Saban fan! I, too, believe that it’s all about the process!”

Much as she may agree with Coach Saban, there are some things that her kids have taught her. “I’ve learned to loosen up and relax a little!” she says.

“Also, as we get closer to our youngest graduating high school, I’ve learned that time doesn’t slow down. It’s important to be as present as possible in all opportunities—you don’t get this time back!”

When it was built in 2006, this waterfront home in Fairhope comprised 1980 square feet and eight rooms, fitting in a great deal of usage into less space than one might expect from gazing at the outside. Nearly 20 years later, the house has had some updates—both inside and out—making it more functional, more comfortable, and much more stylish.

Raised on pilings, the home has an open porch at ground level, with a newly enclosed portion that increases the useable space with features like a bed swing, game table and a workout area—all with fantastic views of the bay. Along with the enclosure are some other changes that increased the home’s usable space to 2400 square feet, the most fun being a new hidden loft area within the stairwell that is accessed through a concealed bookcase door. “This space is the perfect hideaway for quiet reading or an afternoon nap,” says Annie Ly Johnson, ASID, RID, CAPS and owner/designer of ALJ Interiors in Fairhope.

A new kitchen features a walk-in pantry and an island in place of the old u-shaped configuration to facilitate better flow for gathering, boasting porcelain slab countertops with mitered edges for a thick marble appearance and matching backsplash. Not to be overlooked are the stainless Bosch appliances, and dark painted custom cabinetry. In the adjacent laundry room, stacking the washer and dryer provided space to build a new powder room for guests without having to share the ensuite bathroom in the downstairs guest bedroom.

In the guest bedroom, removing the closet and adding built-ins accommodated space to increase the size and place four bunk beds that can sleep six guests in total. The master bedroom upstairs also saw some changes, as it now connects to another newly enclosed porch beyond new French doors, which serves as a home office and has a sleeper sofa to increase useable space in the three bed, three and a half bath home. That ensuite master bath got a designer upgrade as well, with large scale porcelain tiles that give a rich, onyx stone appearance that flows throughout the space on the floors and in the shower. Floating wall-mounted vanities visually expand the bathroom size, while rhino white marble countertops and textured wall coverings add beauty and elegance to give the master suite a spa-like feel.

“The client initially wanted more sleeping space for guests and considered adding a second wing to the house, but we used a ‘design-by-scalpel’ approach versus a sledge-hammer approach,” Johnson says of the changes made to the home under her professional guidance. “We creatively worked within the existing footprint to maximize entertaining zones and added nine new sleeping units. They even got their wish for a gas fireplace! It is truly living large within a limited space, and I love that we helped our client see the diamond in the rough and make it a reality.”

BELLE MAISON 60 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

Clad in white Hardy Plank, dark blue shutters, and cable railing, the home is coastal in style, but more “bay chic” than beachy—and that look continues on the inside, with a mix of blues to anchor the color palette and pops of bright color to add energy and vibrance. At two levels high, it is also something of a trick of the eyes, as it appears more compact in size but still allows guests to “live large” and enjoy life on the water. “With so many options for sleeping, gathering, and enjoying the bay views, the home is stylish yet cozy as well as being impressive yet inviting,” Johnson notes. It doesn’t hurt that the home is located on a beautiful, bay front lot with majestic live oak trees and views of gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, as well as its front and back porches and open deck on the bay side.

“This is a second home, meant as a getaway haven or to bring friends and clients,” says Johnson. “The homeowner’s challenge to us was to add sleeping spaces, more seating for parties and make it stylish but welcoming. It’s not their primary residence, though it reflects their tastes. Being from Baton Rouge they truly love to entertain, and we helped expand their options!”

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FARADAY PHOTOGRAPHY | FARREN NORTH
The art of love... is largely the art of persistence.
MAY 2023 69
— Albert Ellis, American psychologist

Sometimes that persistence comes from other people—and, in the case of Mandi Nichols and Jonathan Rider, it was their mutual friends who saw the potential of what “could be”…If only they had a little help. At the time of their introduction in 2020, Mandi was newly back in Alabama after a stint in New York City, for a “temporary” reprieve from the chaos of everything happening in the city. Then, at a friend’s bachelorette party on Ono Island, Mandi and Jonathan had their meet-cute— one that their friends orchestrated with the intent of matchmaking. “Jonathan and I became social media friends, but I thought nothing of it,” Mandi recalls. “Then three months later, in February of 2021, our friends asked me to come spend Mardi Gras/Joe Cain weekend with them—even though there weren't any parades that year. On my first night in town, my friend Liz told me that we were going do dinner at Steelwood Country Club, along with her husband Bobby, and his best friend, Jonathan. Once again, they were trying to set us up. This was our first date/double date, and the point at which I finally realized they had been scheming to get us together for a while.”

BRIDE

Persistence clearly paid off, and the two embarked on a romance that bloomed into a forever kind of love. Seven months later, “forever” became a reality when Jonathan proposed one October weekend. “We were in Auburn for the AU vs UGA football weekend, and I already knew we were going to have friends coming to town that weekend for the big game but had no idea it was also for our engagement surprise!” Mandi recalls. “Jonathan and I decided to head downtown for a few drinks prior to everyone else getting into town for dinner. When we parked downtown, I could tell that he was acting a little strangely. As we started walking across Stamford Hall lawn, he was holding my hand and squeezing it nervously. The next thing I knew, he was down on one knee and proposing! I can't remember a word Jonathan actually said, but I very vividly remember him dropping the ring and it bouncing a few feet from us right when he pulled it from the box—so he had to give it to me again. After the proposal, we met several of our friends and family for a celebration at Saugahatchee Country Club.”

Just over a year later, on December 10, 2022, friends and family once again gathered to celebrate the couple in the garden at Bragg-Mitchell Mansion in Mobile. Dressed in a strapless, pleated ball gown with a sheer V neckline and fringed jacket, Mandi met Jonathan at the altar with their 22 attendants standing by them— the best man being Jonathan’s seven year-old son, Smith. “He truly stole the show with all of his precious emotions during the ceremony,” says Mandi.

AJ MAY 2023 71

After being pronounced married, the newlyweds joined their guests on the front lawn of the mansion for their reception, dining on a wide selection of delicious food that included beef tenderloin, chicken and seafood gumbo. Satisfying everyone’s sweet tooth, they also had milk and cookies in addition to their beautiful cake—three tiers of red velvet sponge with white cream cheese frosting. “It was made by a family friend using my grandmother’s recipe, which we’ve had at all family events growing up. In fact, I now make this cake for our family at Christmas,” Mandi notes.

After dining, dancing—Smith’s moves being the show stealer of the night—and plenty of partying, the newly married Riders were sent off to begin their twopart honeymoon in Colombia, the first half of which was spent in Cartegena and second half at a resort in the Rosario Islands off the coast. Now back home in Fairhope, the happy couple is looking forward to a their future together—and celebrating the fact that persistence paid off.

UPPER SCHOOL ART FACULTY

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

Vikki: Funny story...I never ever planned to be a teacher I studied art and English in college, and I was a very happy studio artist dividing my time between my ceramics studio and writing freelance food columns for The Mobile Press Register when Bayside “called” me. Tom Johnson who was Head of School for Bayside and Phyllis Horne who was head of the Visual Arts Department at the time called me up and recruited me to come to the Bayside arts program. They wanted to offer Ceramics at Bayside, and they were in need of a middle school visual arts faculty member. I told them that I’d give it a “try”. Once I got to Bayside...surprise, surprise (and it really was a BIG surprise to me), I realized that I LOVED teaching in general and really loved teaching studio art to students. I’ve now been in Bayside’s Visual Arts Department for 20 years.

Mrs. Wendy McClendon. My beautiful, kindhearted second grade teacher. What an amazing woman! I can't remember exactly how, but somehow, I won "teacher for the day" that year. I was able to dress like my teacher, sit at the teacher's desk, teach a short lesson to my fellow second graders, eat lunch with the other teachers, and so on. It was such a special day that I have never forgotten. She built our character, she believed in us, she made us each feel so loved, so important, and so valued. I knew that if I ever actually became a teacher, I would strive to treat my students the way she did.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

What do you feel is the biggest reward of being a teacher?

Vikki: I get to be creative every day so that is certainly one reward. The other would be watching the students grow as artists. Seeing their work on ‘Day One’ and the work on the last day of term is always amazing to them and to me. In art growth is very visual, and you can literally see it. The students find that very rewarding as do I.

What do you feel is the biggest reward?

Carrie: The biggest reward is always when students are happy with what they have created. If they are proud of themselves I am elated!

How do you make learning fun for your students?

Oh! There are so many rewards! The laughter, the milestones, the hugs, the "aha" moments, the memories, the field trips, the growth, the cards from students, the authenticity of young kids, the summers off, and the list goes on and on...but the biggest reward, I believe, is the relationships with my students.

How do you make learning fun for your students?

Kristy: I was blessed to have been taught by two legendary Bayside Academy teachers when I was a young art student in high school. Their mentorship, support and friendship has been the biggest influence on my becoming a teacher. It is also because of the seeds they planted, and the foundation laid by these amazing teachers that Bayside Academy has the thriving art department it has today.

Each year I gain a new classroom family; the students become "my babies"—we grow together, we learn together, we laugh and cry together, we do life together—and then at the end of each school year I watch that "family" go to the next grade level. It is part of the job, but that part never gets any easier for me.

Kristy: Fun is the name of the game. If I am not having fun, I don’t want to do it. It’s the same for my students. We go out on photography shoots to the bay, practice our shutter speed skills with light painting, sparklers, skateboards, smoke bombs and record players. We share in the excitement of shooting film and seeing the magic of a photographic print develop in the darkroom. Photography is a challenging medium, and the key to being successful with the art form is PLAY.

As a teacher, the best way to make learning fun and to help your students succeed is to truly get to know them. Once the students know I totally support them, the sky becomes the limit! Kids love crafts, games, and challenges. We do many hands on activities, we dance, we sing, we joke, we admit our mistakes, we share, we work in teams, and we create..

Congratulations to our 2023 Youth Leadership Graduates

The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce Foundation is pleased to announce the graduates from the 2023 Youth Leadership program. A ceremony was held Monday evening at Coastal Alabama Community College in honor of the graduates. Parents and students attended from each of the participating schools.

Alabama House Representative, Matt Simpson, spoke briefly about the success of this graduating class and how he is excited to watch them grow and see them again in the future. Each year the graduating class works on group projects to learn about issues in our community. This year, two groups were formed. One group presented on the issue of mental health and assistance in local schools. The other group presented a moving video on what hunger means to them in honor of the Prodisee Pantry.

The Youth Leadership Program is an intensive and elite, seven-month program designed to provide Eastern Shore high school students with the opportunity to gain a greater knowledge about their community, develop strong leadership skills and gain more self and social awareness.

Students Learn:

• History & Geography of Baldwin County

• Law & Government

• Business Smarts

• Health & Human Services

• Environment

In addition to class sessions, students work in teams to develop small group projects that address and benefit a special community need.

The Chamber’s Youth Leadership program recognizes that we can build vital communities that value fairness, diversity and integrity by developing young leaders.

Infirmary Health’s Heart & Vascular Institute performs the greater Gulf Coast Region’s first Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis

[MOBILE, AL] — Infirmary Health’s Heart & Vascular Institute (HVI) performed a branched Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) utilizing the GORE TAG Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis (TBE). This is the first procedure of its kind along the greater Gulf Coast Region, from Jacksonville to New Orleans. The procedure was performed by Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgical Associates physicians Cullen McCarthy, MD, vascular surgeon, and Kareem Bedeir, MD, cardio-thoracic surgeon, and the Cath lab team at Mobile Infirmary.

“As your FIRST CHOICE for healthcare in the Gulf Coast region, Infirmary Health’s Heart & Vascular institute continues to prioritize our patients’ heart and vascular health,” says William Johnson, MD, medical director of the HVI. “The goal of the HVI is provide our communities with the latest and most advanced treatment methods possible.”

The TBE treatment method offers patients with a descending thoracic aorta, that includes the left subclavian artery, a simplified, minimally invasive approach that minimizes risk and shortens recovery time. This branched stent graft, when implanted, allows blood to flow from the left subclavian artery and the rest of the aorta while preventing blood from flowing to the affected area. Prior to the development of the GORE TAG TBE, a first-of-its kind device, the primary intervention for patients with a descending thoracic aorta that includes the left subclavian artery was open heart surgery.

The risk factors for developing thoracic aortic disease include family history, smoking, high blood pressure and heart disease. Patients might also experience symptoms as pain, ranging from mild to severe, in the chest, back, shoulders, neck or abdomen. If you are experiencing symptoms or might be at risk for thoracic aortic disease, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider.

Infirmary Health's Heart & Vascular Institute comprises physicians and specialists across cardiology, cardiovascular, vascular and thoracic services. This award-winning team provides some of the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art heart care across the Gulf Coast Region.
