FROM THE EDITOR

FROM THE EDITOR

We are excited to share our first Real Estate Issue with you. The pages of this issue are filled with content focused around talented and dedicated professionals who are leaders in Baldwin County’s vibrant real estate industry. We also showcase great neighborhoods from Fairhope to Orange Beach.

Since our last issue, there have been many opportunities along the Eastern Shore to enjoy a great time for a good cause. Fairhope Rotary Club filled the streets of downtown Fairhope with their Steak Cook Off, Girls Night Out was again a sellout, and Ballin’ on Belrose continues to grow in impressive style.

Please congratulate your neighbors in real estate who were recognized at Baldwin Realtors Awards, one of the great events we share in this issue. We know you will enjoy our coverage of Thomas Hospital Foundation’s Grand Summer Ball, one of the premier annual events in our area.

In this, our Gentlemen’s Issue, we had the opportunity to get to know some guys who are leading the way in the community, and we are excited to introduce them to you too. Keeping with our theme, we feature a SuperDad this month who has built a thriving business while never losing sight of the importance of being a “hands on” dad.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we GO PINK in October in our Women’s Issue. We are honored to feature brave women who have battled cancer who are willing to share their stories to provide hope and inspiration to others.

We hope that your Summer activities with family and friends create many great memories. We will be back in August with some new events, people and organizations making our community a great place to live.

As always, we are thankful to be included in the events that make our community shine, excited we have the opportunity to feature exceptional individuals who make our community such a special place, and humbled by your support.

Community DEVELOPING A LEONARD KAISER

COMMUNITY leaders

hen Hurricane Frederick destroyed his home in 1979, Leonard Kaiser took the challenge and decided it was an opportunity to do something new. With his newly minted real estate license, the resourceful 29-year-old took his short two years in the industry and founded Kaiser Realty, Inc. “I saw the opportunities that would be available following the storm and knew the future potential for our area in real estate development and vacation rentals,” he says. I have certainly witnessed the amazing growth of our area and the real estate industry over the last 46 years.”

That amazing growth and many years of hard work brought with it incredible success to Kaiser Realty, Inc. In fact, under Kaiser’s expertise, dedication, and determination, the firm became one of the area’s largest vacation rental, property management, and real estate sales companies. As they often do, growth and success brought change. In December 2012, Wyndham Vacation Rentals acquired the vacation rental and association management divisions of the company. Four years later, Leonard transitioned the real estate sales side of the business into Kaiser Sotheby’s International Realty. “In 2016, my two oldest daughters, Andrea Kaiser Shilston and Erin Kaiser—both of whom are Realtors involved in our company—joined me in a search for a franchise that would share our established company culture and our goal to grow through quality, not quantity. As a renowned global brand, Sotheby’s International Realty sets the industry standards for giving agents the state-of-the-art tools they need to be successful in our dynamic real estate market.”

Then, in 2021, Kaiser, along with his brother Glen, introduced Kaiser Vacation Rentals, Inc., as a property management company specializing in the rental and management of luxury vacation homes on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Clearly, the firm has let no grass grow under its feet—and the success that has come of that determination never to be complacent has only served to make Kaiser more dedicated to the brand image and the company culture. “I have worked to build a reputation as a trusted, honest businessperson with a genuinely caring attitude for other people’s success,” Kaiser says. “I have always surrounded myself with people who have shared my passion for doing the right things for the right reasons and putting our clients and customers first.”

“By building this company with genuinely good people and giving them the support to grow and learn, we’ve been respected in the real estate industry and the local community for over 43 years,” Kaiser goes on. “I believe our success and reputation has been gained through our honesty and transparency in all of our endeavors and simply treating people as we would like to be treated.”

As a native of Baldwin County, Kaiser has a natural love of the community, and that love has instilled in him a desire to give back—both professionally and personally—through his involvement in the organizations that serve it. “I have been involved with many facets of the tourism industry and have served on the board for Gulf Shores/Orange Beach tourism as a long-time member as well as its chairman for five consecutive years,” says Kaiser, who is also known as a skilled real estate developer, particularly for the residential communities of Cottages on RomarBeach, Martyn Woods and Caswell. “I worked closely with many other community leaders to always help keep our focus on our area as a family vacation destination.”

Kaiser has served multiple terms as Chairman of the Baldwin County Association of Realtors and as a State Director of The Alabama Association of Realtors. He has also served numerous terms as Chairman of the Alabama Gulf Coast Chamber, as a Regional Director for The American Heart Association, as Chairman of United Way of Baldwin County, and as a board member for the Coastal Alabama Partnership. He is a board member or the Alabama Insurance Underwriters Association and is also a member of The Kiwanis Club and The Knights of Columbus. “You engage in your community because it matters—not only for you and your family, but for generations to come,” Kaiser says. “To be involved in shaping the vision for the future of your community is an honor.”

“I honestly enjoy what I do, being in real estate, vacation rental management and development, and that’s why I am still doing it today; however, family always comes first. I attribute much of my success to the involvement, love and support of my wife, Belinda. I feel very blessed! I like to spend time with my 3 daughters, Andrea, Erin and Shelby and their families, boating and watching sunsets on the bay. You might also catch me riding motorcycles and traveling too! “

Amy grew up on the Eastern Shore and in Orange Beach. Her twenty-five years of experience in real estate and new home construction provides clients access to a wealth of knowledge as they navigate real estate decisions. When not helping her clients achieve their real estate goals, Amy enjoys spending time with her husband, Ron, as well their children and their families.

What makes you different from other realtors?

I love to learn and share the information that I have learned with my clients. I support my recommendations with research, data and my experience which helps my clients make the smartest financial decision for themselves, a decision they feel good about when buying or selling a home. My clients lean on me because of my local roots, deep understanding of the local market and my insight in regard to all aspects of real estate including new construction. My goal is to always... always...remember to put my clients’ needs and wants first – I’m here to help them get there.

What do you enjoy most about a career in real estate?

I love the excitement of being involved in my client’s journey. I feel blessed to help them in their transition to the next chapter in their lives. I enjoy that every day is different because every client is unique, each home has its own story to tell, and no two real estate transactions are ever the same. The feeling I get in knowing that I’ve helped someone reach their goals and dreams is hard to put into words.

michellebigler.wiselivingrealestate.com

Whether spending time with her own, or helping yours find the perfect home, family comes first for Michelle Bigler, who has served the Gulf Coast for twenty-five years and counting. As the previous owner of several local businesses including a children’s boutique and an advertising agency, Michelle applies her entrepreneurial spirit and extensive professional experience to the field of real estate.

What makes you different from other realtors? While I never pursued a career in the field, I studied psychology in college. That has helped me navigate all aspects of my life: personal, family and certainly, my career. As a real estate professional, I talk with my clients about life changes that may impact their decisions. Owning retail stores taught me the value of customer service and patience, and I use the marketing skills developed as the owner of my own advertising agency on a daily basis. I believe all of these experiences gave me some valuable tools I now use to assist my clients with their real estate needs.

What do you enjoy most about a career in real estate?

I cherish the relationships a great deal, but I also enjoy the art of negotiating. If I had not been a realtor, I would have gone back to school to become a lawyer. Ultimately, I’m glad I chose real estate, which affords me the opportunity to be social, while working and doing what I absolutely love...without spending every day in an office.

CHASON

Forty-five years ago when Larry Chason became a REALTOR® , the real estate industry looked much different: there weren’t college degrees geared toward real estate, and the landscape wasn’t so saturated by independent agencies. But much the same as now, it was a lucrative industry and one that offered a clear path to success. So when the opportunity presented itself for a recently-graduated, post-college Chason to work with his cousin at Earle, McMillan and Niemeyer, he took it.

“I had taken two or three college courses in real estate, so I bought a book to study,” Chason recalls. “When I finished the whole book, I traveled to Montgomery to take the broker’s exam and passed. Then I moved to Fairhope to an apartment and started my career.”

More than four decades in, Chason has built a successful and impressive career, guiding clients through the process of real estate investment and working in every facet of the industry, including listing and sales, property management, investment counseling, subdivision development and buyer brokerage. Now, he focuses mainly on managing properties he has acquired over the years, supporting his wife in her business and their three sons in their various endeavors. He was recently honored with the Emeritus designation at the annual awards for Baldwin REALTORS® , which is awarded only to REALTOR® members who have held membership for a cumulative period of 40 years.

“I think the Emeritus designation is important in that it shows a long dedication to the real estate industry, which has been very good to me,” says Chason, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. “I am proud of the industry and all the special people I’ve met along the way and the many great friends I have made—many of whom have passed on. I think of them often and all that I learned from them through the Association of REALTORS® and working projects together

“Aside from the obvious reference to how old I am,” Chason continues, inserting a moment of humor before growing serious again, “I hope that it doesn’t mean people think I’m done. I love my work and the clients I’ve built a relationship with over many years. The industry is changing for sure, but some things that were important a hundred years ago will still be important a hundred years from now. Being a REALTOR® means that you voluntarily subscribe to a code of ethics. I have had the privilege of serving as chairman of the Professional Standards Committee for more years than I can remember, but I think I’m the only chairman the board has ever had.

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
34 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

“What I love most about my job is solving problems for clients,” he goes on. “Education is certainly important, but experience is key. My father called it graduating from the school of hard knocks. I’ve made plenty of mistakes and tried to learn from all of them, and I have been blessed to have access to very talented attorneys, engineers, accountants, contractors, skilled craftsmen, insurance experts, and fellow REALTORS® with similar backgrounds to mine—all of whom have helped further my career and made me better at my job.”

Chason’s work certainly made him a familiar face in the community, but he also felt the importance of giving back to the community in which he lived and worked. He spent years coaching youth sports and spent 12 years on the Daphne Planning Commission before going on to active involvement with the REALTORS® Governmental Affairs Committee. Chason spends his free time with his family and working on improving his musical skills or hunting, camping, kayaking, and enjoying his vacation home at Perdido Beach.

She and her husband, Winston, have two Springer Spaniels, Cash & Eleven, that rule the household. Aleen’s daughter is currently attending Auburn University, and her son is proudly serving his country as a Sergeant in The United States Army. When she’s not selling real estate, Aleen enjoys traveling, pickleball, golf, and boating.

What makes you different from other realtors?

My familiarity with so many different areas and neighborhoods in Baldwin County, along with my knowledge of waterfront property and the county’s navigable waterways. I take a “Concierge Customer Service” approach, offering next-level attention. I am always ready to pick up the phone, find answers, and resolve issues. I enjoy helping people who aren’t really sure what area they want to be in— I’m like a tour guide + life coach + realtor!

How did you choose real estate as a career?

My interest in real estate began with my mother. As a child, she allowed me to tag along for her open houses and showings. My passion for houses, paired with my love for people, made a career in real estate a natural choice.

Fun fact:

Catch me on TV, alongside my mom (Claiborne Walsh) as part of “Love in Fairhope,” airing on Hulu in late September.

A PROMISE OFFamily Home

Homelessness.

It’s a word that comes with stigma and brings judgement—often times without the full story. Sadly, it’s a condition faced by half a million across the United States, some of them families with children—one that we can do something about.

The desire to do something and make a real impact on the community was the very thing that led to the existence of the Interfaith Hospitality Network in 1986. Based in New Jersey, the network went national and gained presidential recognition. Seventeen years later, in 2003, the organization changed names to Family Promise.

A few years later, a woman named Connie Plemmons was working with Catholic Social Services in Robertsdale, where she saw firsthand the need for a family shelter in Baldwin County. Each day, Plemmons witnessed how many families were coming to their agency for assistance. She raised a call to action for area churches to form a team to work on a solution for this problem, and in determining the best program model for Baldwin County, the

impactful work of Family Promise was discovered. Family Promise of Baldwin County, Inc., opened its doors to homeless families with children in January 2008.

What makes the organization so impactful is simple yet complex, as it does something that most other homeless shelters do not. “Family Promise of Baldwin County is the first shelter for families with children in our county and remains the only shelter in our county serving homeless children and families of all structures,” says Program Manager Jamie Foote, who first joined Family Promise of Baldwin County as a case manager in 2012. “This means that we serve two-parent households, fathers with children, mothers with children, grandmothers with children, older siblings taking care of younger siblings and more. This model was chosen because it keeps families together. Some shelters are specific to meeting the needs of women or women and children, but do not allow teen boys or fathers, which forces families to separate into different shelters at an already critical moment in their lives.”

“The goal of Family Promise of Baldwin County, Inc., is to keep every family unit together,” she goes on. “The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) shelter model utilizes area churches and volunteers to provide bedrooms to the families served, and our day center provides a daily respite for working families participating in our shelter program. It offers a home base with a kitchen, laundry facilities, bathrooms, locked storage closets for each family, a resource room, and playroom for the children.”

Since opening their doors in 2008, Family Promise of Baldwin County has worked with 972 individuals—273 households with children—to provide shelter and transitional housing. From 2020 to 2022, they have served 443 individuals—or 99 households— with housing stability through their Homeless No More Program. “We went from helping an average of 20 households per year to around 60 households per year when our housing stability programs were implemented,” Foote notes.

IMPACT & GIVEBACK
42 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE

Clearly, their services are needed—badly. “Baldwin County is a rural area and one of the largest and fastest growing counties in Alabama,” Foote explains. “Research had shown that 10.8% of residents in our county live at or below the poverty line. Then 2020 brought both the effects of a pandemic as well as Hurricane Sally, which caused catastrophic damage to the few subsidized apartments available in our county. With this loss of housing, demand became higher than supply and caused the housing market to explode and the cost of homes to increase to an all-time high. Fortunately, we were able to be resilient and have a quick and creative response to displaced and at-risk families, which is a great example of how much Family Promise of Baldwin County is needed in our community.”

The organization’s services include shelter and case management to families with children who are experiencing homelessness, in addition to a transitional housing program available to families in their shelter program that may need an extended length of time to reach goals of permanent housing. They also have a housing stability program offering prevention and diversion services, which is an outreach program to the community who are at-risk of becoming homeless by providing rental assistance. Family Promises even offers a community services program called “Barriersto-Bridges,”which is provided during case management. “Barriers such as transportation, childcare, and illness are the largest contributors to family homelessness,” Foote says. “We try to find ways to break those barriers and building bridges while remaining in the scope of our mission.”

To enable their work, Family Promise of Baldwin County receives funding from individual donors, local community partners, churches, annual appeal fund campaigns, annual fundraisers such as their highly anticipated Chocolate Affair each December and a variety of grants. Their mission is ongoing, with hopes that one day the promise of home will be a reality for every family in the community—both within Baldwin County and across the nation.

As marketing and communications director for Baldwin REALTORS®, Kayla Sanders is part of an organization whose purpose is supporting local Realtors® with education, technology and advocacy to create a network of ethical experts in the real estate industry of Baldwin County and the surrounding Gulf Coast.

At home, her role as a mother is much the same, supporting a family in the hopes of raising children who grow into kind, decent adults with integrity and honor. Married for nine years, Sanders and her husband have a strong relationship that has seen them through some exceptional struggles on the road to parenthood. “Our first-born, Beckham, is our miracle child,” Sanders says. “He was born prematurely at just 27 weeks, weighing 2.5 pounds. We went through an 89-day NICU stay at USA Children’s & Women’s in Mobile before he was able to come home. Now, he is a thriving and happy four-year-old who just started Pre-K! The Lord graciously allowed my second son, Callan, to be a full-term, healthy baby a year ago. We have seen the Lord’s kindness in both experiences of having our children.”

The couple’s experience with the birth of their first child inspired them to partner with Holcomb Ministries, delivering “NICU Blessing Bags” to families in the NICU around the holidays as well as offering financial supporting and gifts of encouragement to NICU families. “We love supporting and assisting in the work they are doing!” Sanders says.

In both the struggles and the triumphs, Sanders has loved being a mother—and, being a working mom, she’s also had to learn the art of juggling the demands of all aspects of her life. “It’s a constant juggle, but at the end of the day, my family comes first,” she contends. “I’m thankful for a working environment that allows me to prioritize my family and turn off work when the workday ends.”

SUPERMOM
SEPTEMBER 2023 59

In Sanders’s estimation, juggling is important for showing her children an example of work ethic as well as honor. “I want them to see not only that work is good, but mostly, I want to show them how anything they do can be done to bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ,” she says. “That’s why I try to give my best efforts and attitude at work. But I am not perfect, and I do fail, so I also think that’s an important reality to pass on to my boys: learning how to make amends and ask for forgiveness after failure.”

While both of her children may still be tiny, they have taught her big things: “I learn from them constantly. I’ve learned how to better lay down my selfishness and put others first. I’ve also learned how to appreciate every small, seemingly mundane moment and count it as a blessing from the Lord.

“I am so incredibly proud of my husband and my children—both for who they are as individuals as well as for the blessing that I get to be a part of their lives,” she continues. “They are what drives me every day at work and home. I am a better mother and businesswoman because of the support and leadership of my husband. He is the most generous person I know, and that has truly influenced me in all aspects of my life.”

As her two little boys grow, Sanders and her husband have created traditions with them that will likely shape them into fine men. “We have family devotional time every night before bed where we read a Bible story, talk about it, pray, and sometimes sing a song,” she explains. “We try to do as much as we can do as a full family unit because we see that our boys cherish those times when we’re all together.”

It's love in action, and that is something that Sanders prays her boys feel every day of their life. “No matter how old they get or where they are, I hope they always remember how much I love them,” she says. “I tell them every day and try to show them as often as possible that everything I do is coming

I was able to settle in as a full-time working artist in Mobile. Since then, my art has been inspired by unexpected color combinations, interesting compositions, and the challenge of combining those elements to create modern impressionistic art that is striking and memorable.

My art has evolved through the years, but what drives me has remained the same, a deep desire to create and encourage joy and light. Maybe, partially, it's the people pleaser in me, but mostly, it's from a daily grateful heart that loves Jesus and the light, joy, and salvation He brings.

I work from my home studio in Mobile with my husband, Steven, and our 3 small children Ellyana, and twins, Luke and Landry Claire, who all frequently “help” me with my art. There's nothing I love more than being a stay-at-home Mom and Artist...and picking CheezIt crumbs out of my paintings. My art can be seen at multiple galleries across the Gulf Coast from Mississippi to Florida including Hello Gallery in Fairhope.

Grayson Austin

The story of their meeting may not be all that unique—they met through mutual friends at college—but there’s a lot written between the lines for Grayson Parker and Austin Burch...the sparks that made them decide to explore something more than friendship…the days they spent together over the two years they dated…the little moments that made them fall in love.

All of that is there, in the book that is their history, along with the moment it all changed from a “someday” into a reality. “Austin’s mother and stepfather own Southwood kitchen, and they have a private back room that is closed off to the other dining area,” Grayson says, foreshadowing the tale of her engagement. “My best friend—Austin’s cousin—told me we were having a girls’ dinner and to be ready by a certain time. When we arrived, she made me walk in first. There were rose petals and candles in a trail to Austin, who was standing in front of the stone fireplace. He also had a photographer capture everything, which gave him points in my book. After I said yes, my entire family from Birmingham flooded in! I was completely shocked and extremely happy— plus we even got to enjoy a fabulous meal, all together.”

One year and four months later, on May 27, 2023, Grayson walked down the aisle at the Coastal Art Center in Orange Beach, wearing a stunning A-line silhouette gown with a fitted bodice and plunging neckline flaring out into a full tulle skirt. “Austin and I did not do a first look, because I wanted to get a true reaction from him when I walked down the aisle,” Grayson notes.

And as 200 of their friends and family watched, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced married… …again.

But there’s more written between the lines here, as well.

A year before, on May 27, 2022, Austin and Grayson had been married by her childhood pastor in an intimate ceremony in her parents’ backyard, with only family as witnesses.

This second ceremony was for the rest of their loved ones, to celebrate with them in a big way. After walking back down the aisle together, Austin and Grayson joined their guests for an on-site reception that turned into quite the party. “Austin and I had a dance competition, and I break-danced on my head!” laughs Grayson, who had changed into a dance-friendly two-piece dress for the reception.

Dancing, eating, drinking, and the cutting of the cake—a four-tired vanilla and red velvet cake covered in buttercream frosting—all of it in celebration of the two people who were, after a year of marriage, choosing each other again. After one more wardrobe change, the happy couple were sent on their way to start their “honeymoon”…

…with plans to go on a real honeymoon to Punta Cana in the future

As the years go by, Austin and Grayson will choose each other many times over, with all the moments of their story written in the lines.
