“This is my calling. Every day, I get to go to work, meet new people in my community, see some familiar faces, and help them feel better and live healthier,” said Dr. LeBert.

COMMUNITY Leader

Barbecue and Blessings BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

A

s the coastal states of the South watched Tropical Storm Ida strengthen into a hurricane and then gain both speed and intensity as she neared the U.S., we all wondered just how devastating she would be once she hit land. At a category 4, would she decimate whatever lay in her path? She seemed to have the Northshore and its surrounding areas in her sights, focused on feeding off the cities and towns like so much food placed in front of a hungry toddler. And as rain and wind bared down, people were left without power, water, and food—necessities that we often take for granted until circumstances leave us without them. For the people of Northshore in need, organizations like the Northshore Food Bank stepped up to provide them with food for themselves and their families. But there were others—other special individuals—who saw a need that they could fill and took it upon themselves to do so. For Dustin and Hilary Hinton, their backyard smoker was the inspiration—and the means—to feed not just their own family and neighbors as they had first envisioned, but also linemen coming in to work as well as others in their community. “At first, we just made one meal,” says Dustin, who works as a Client Systems Architect at Poolcorp. His wife, Hilary, owns Hilary Does Hair. “We thought we would feed our family and neighbors, and then it just kept escalating. We saw all the linemen driving around, and we figured they were pretty hungry. I wanted to make them some real hardcore barbecue; and since I love making barbecue, we just went all in.”

14

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

“It was amazing to see the community come together, and being part of something like that is unforgettable.”

Going “all in” meant not just making meat, but making full meals: a choice of two pulled pork or brisket sliders, coleslaw, and M&M cookies. Naturally, such a large-scale operation required supplies, and a friend of the Hintons’ delivered meat from MS, while the rest of the necessary supplies came from Sam’s Club when its doors opened. To get the word out, they found a group called “Feed Linemen” and posted there as well as on the local Facebook marketplace. What came next was nothing short of overwhelming. “It blew up,” says Dustin. “We were actually quite shocked. We just expected a few people to show up, but then everyone showed up. It was insane. We ran out of food each day in under an hour.” Fortunately, the Hintons’ efforts were given support by other people in the area who saw what they were doing and wanted to help in any way that they could. “We received an incredible response from the community of people wanting to help,” says Dustin. “Not only did our family come out to help, but so did our neighbors and our friends. We even had random people from Facebook delivering food to a local nursing home for us. It was amazing to see the community come together, and being part of something like that is unforgettable.” That kind of bond, those selfless acts that prove the goodness in people and bring us together in times of crisis, are incredibly important to the human spirit. “These days, we are more splintered than ever—as a nation and as a people—and it’s nice to know that when the chips are down and it really counts, we rise to the occasion. It shows that we are all just a bunch of humans trying to get a meal and help out,” Dustin notes. SEPTEMBER 2021

Technology Incredibly, the manufacturer ofAdvanced the Hintons’ smoker, Masterbuilt, caught wind of what was happening along the Fabulous Frames Northshore and the barbecue that was being made on their smoker to feed the lines of people that Friendly showed up everyStaff day. Rather than just sending a Tweet or posting a Facebook message, they actually did something meaningful. “Masterbuilt is great with social media, and they started messaging me about what was going on,” says Dustin. “One thing led to another, and they donated $5,000. I was blown away. Honestly, I still can’t believe it. I’m so thankful that they stepped up like that. Really, though, they were very concerned about the area and didn’t know how to help but knew that we were focused on giving the money to Northshore Food Bank.” As people come together in crisis, it’s incredible to see how far they will step out of their comfort zone, how far they will go to help people they have never met. And as the community puts itself together, it’s comforting to know that kindness is not a word we have lost.

A FAMILY AFFAIR Pamby Barfield’s eyes brighten when asked about the Christwood Retirement Community. “For me, Christwood is kind of a family affair,” she explains. “My mom is here, and before that, her mother, my grandmother, was here. Now my in-laws are here, and so is my father’s brother. So when I think of Christwood, I definitely think of family.” Pamby’s mother, Pamela Freeman, known to most as Pam, is not only a resident. She was vice president of the first Christwood Board of Directors in 1991, and was one of a small band of early supporters that worked tirelessly to make it possible for Christwood to open its doors in 1996. “I remember Mom working so hard and being so passionate about what she was doing. She told me many times she was happiest when she was working with that small, closely knit group in the early days – Jack Lohman, Suzy Graham, Ann Butts and others. “There was a lot of love in every decision they made. The hallways had to be made just so, to encourage the residents to walk, and the chairs had to have arms to support them. Love and thought went into every decision.” Pamby’s mother couldn’t agree more. “Those early days were just wonderful,” Pam remembers. “It was a blessing to be part of it. “We all came from Christ Church, you know. And we all believed that we were called to do the work. We were close friends, and that was a blessing too. We loved each other and we rolled up our sleeves and worked together. “We traveled together to see other facilities and get ideas from others who had been on the same mission in different places. I often joked that you couldn’t pay me enough for the work I chose to do as a volunteer.”

100 Christwood Blvd • Covington • christwoodrc.com

As Christwood is now celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary, Pam can take great satisfaction in what it has become. Today, under the direction of Executive Officer Father Stephen Holzhalb, and with the guidance of a sixteen-member volunteer board of directors, Christwood offers concierge living, resort-style amenities, convenient services and easy access to healthcare to its more than 270 residents. Nestled on a 117-acre wooded and beautifully landscaped campus in Covington, adjacent to Christ Episcopal School, the Christwood Retirement Community is a not-for-profit ‘Life Plan Community,’ also known as a continuing care retirement community, offering independent and assisted living, as well as cognitive memory, skilled nursing and rehabilitative care. But to Pamby Barfield, Christwood is so much more than the facilities and services. “Christwood is like a home to me, and my children have always loved it here,” she says, remembering early visits. “There is a puzzle nook in Topaz Court, and when I would bring the kids with me to visit my grandmother and my in-laws, they would head straight to it – to add to it, but also to see how much had been accomplished since their last visit. Frequently some of the residents would join in, and they always looked forward to the kids’ visits. It was just so beautiful.” And today she is thankful for the caliber of staff that serves her mother and her fellow residents. “They treat them with dignity,” Pamby says. “They are friendly and always show respect,” adding, “It’s a world-class community in every way.” “Yes it is,” Pam agrees. “It’s a very special place and I feel blessed to be here. For many years now I’ve watched it grow and evolve into this happy, beautiful place.” To learn more, call 985-898-0515 or visit www.ChristwoodRC.com.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK

A FOUNDATION FOR BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

A

s the world has changed, so have the needs of its people when it comes to healthcare. Time and technology have greatly impacted the way the medical community operates, providing it with resources that were once just vague imaginings of visionary thinkers. That said, it takes hospitals with more than just a bottom-line focus to really make a difference in the community, and Slidell Memorial Hospital is one of those community-minded organizations who see the faces of their patients and do the utmost to change their lives for the better. Offering advanced technology and innovative treatments to its patients, SMH is a local nonprofit community hospital that has been providing quality care to the local community for 60 years, leading the way in healthcare on the Northshore. Located in the heart of Slidell, SMH offers a 223-bed acute care hospital with expert physicians, specially trained staff, and a level of care that makes it unique to other hospitals. Its specialty departments include the SMH Heart Center and the SMH Regional Cancer Center—the only facility of its kind in East St. Tammany, where patients can be diagnosed, treated, and rehabilitated in one convenient location—an expanded Emergency Room, and Outpatient Rehabilitation therapists who are certified in LSVT-BIG treatment for Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders, as well as operating the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of its kind in the area and offering a New Beginnings Program for moms coping with Opioid Use Disorder. Recognizing the growing healthcare needs of the community that could not be served without major funding, the SMH Foundation was created as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization in 2008. “Our purpose is to aid SMH in their efforts to improve the quality of life in our community,” says Laurie Panzeca, Executive Director of SMH Foundation. “Fundraising efforts enable us to grant funds to hospital departments that provide patient and caregiver support programs, equipment upgrades and additions, and renovations that serve the community. Hospital philanthropy directly connects the power of generosity to impact the health and well-being of our community. Our organization offers a vehicle for the community to ensure the longevity and sustainability of having SMH as a nonprofit community hospital.” 24

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

CARE

Over the course of its lifetime, the foundation has helped countless individuals, each of whom likely have no idea of the work that the organization does behind the scenes in keeping the hospital running at peak performance. “The work of the SMH Foundation and funds received benefit over 25,000 individuals annually,” says Panzeca. “Chances are that most of the patients that are treated at SMH have benefited from SMH Foundation funding that were granted to SMH. The funds that are raised by the SMH Foundation are dedicated to departments at SMH such as the SMH Regional Cancer Center; the Heart Center; the Emergency Department; Labor and Delivery; Outpatient therapy; Community Outreach that includes health screenings, education, and the Fit as a Firefighter program; the Imaging Center; and Cardio-pulmonary rehab.”

In the fight against cancer, the SMH Foundation has done amazing things for patient advocacy, proving their heart for the community. The foundation offers a host of resources, support programs, care packages, screenings, and celebrations like the survivor “pinking of the fountain.” Cognizant of just how greatly a patient's appearance may change during the course of cancer treatment, SMH has included in its Regional Cancer Center a fully staffed and equipped Appearance Center. “We assist patients with enhancement of their personal appearance,” says Panzeca. Services and products available to patients include transportation assistance, cosmetics and makeup tutorials, skin care, prosthetics, mastectomy garments, hats, scarves, and wigs.

SMH’s pediatric clinic also participates in the Reach Out and Read program, which is funded by the SMH Foundation. “The program offers books to pediatric patients from birth to five years old, supporting the belief that all families should have the tools and information they need to make reading aloud a daily routine,” says Panzeca. “Through this program, the foundation helps integrate reading into pediatric practices. The providers advise families about the importance of reading with their children and share books that serve as a catalyst for healthy childhood development.” Finding funding is, of course, critical to the cause; and the foundation’s donors are its lifeblood, assuring that equipment and services remain excellent at SMH and helping the hospital offer the highest quality of patient care possible. “The foundation raises funds through direct donor engagement and hosting annual special events, and our focus is connecting donors that care about healthcare and the health of our community to opportunities for giving,” Panzeca explains. “The dollars raised by the foundation are from local corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. The foundation then grants the funds collected through a formal grant process to SMH departments.” Naturally, the last 18 months have affected some of the foundation’s fundraising efforts. “Although the SMH Foundation is financially healthy and stable, our fundraising strategies include special events such as our signature special event, the Rooftop Rendezvous, which is on hold. Special events like this and our annual golf event represent 30 to 40 percent of our annual fundraising budget,” Panzeca explains. “Still, our purpose has not changed over the last 18 months, nor will it; we have only refined our fundraising efforts based on the needs of the SMH staff and our community. Our foundation is a small shop with only two employees, a volunteer board, and office volunteers. Our success is due in no small part to their commitment to their work and our purpose.”

“Cheers to Social NorthShore! Working with their team has been a great experience!” FOR MORE INFO ON SMH FOUNDATION, VISIT SLIDELLMEMORIAL.ORG.

BELLE MAISON

THE SANCTUARY SPACE By Liesel Schmidt

The French modern feel of the home at 119 Tranquility Drive in Mandeville is one that gives it a certain stateliness balanced with a hominess that makes it approachable and livable—even though it’s nothing short of a glossy architectural magazine spread waiting to happen.

oasting 6,150 square feet, the two-story home comprises four bedrooms, four and a half baths, an office, a formal dining room, and a media/golf simulator room as well as the open-plan kitchen and living room. With white oak floors that flow from room to room, the home has a light, bright interior that is both simple and sophisticated—with the odd touch of glamour that speaks to the design sensibilities of its owners. “I just love creating and living in a space so comfy and cozy for my family and friends to enjoy,” says Brandi Heath, owner of L&H Homes and a licensed custom home builder and interior designer. She shares the home with her husband, Shane, who works in insurance and risk management, as well as their baby son, Cayman, and their dog Sugar.

With massive windows throughout, the home is flooded with light, the white walls and thick molding set off by beautiful pieces of art and elegant light fixtures. Color is really secondary to texture, as most of the furnishings throughout the home are shades of white, with accents of gold. “We wanted it to be all neutrals, with lots of whites and textures,” says Heath. “The art I’ve chosen is from local boutiques and made by local artists, so I love that we’re supporting the local art scene. The rest of my decorative materials come from all over, and that’s one thing that people immediately notice when they come into our home—that, and the lights.” 30

The lights to which Heath refers are indeed notable— chandeliers that are like the finishing touch to a beautiful painting. In the half-bath, a three-tier fixture adds a little bit of sparkle to the room, while the formal dining room features a unique piece with gold and crystals. “Light fixtures are such a great way to finish a room because they are like the jewelry to an outfit,” says Heath. “Your outfits are not complete without your jewelry, right?”

The open floorplan is a particular feature that the Heaths love, with their main living area flowing directly into a large kitchen flanked with double-height custom cabinetry and a massive, 11-foot island in the center. Perfect for parties and a couple who loves to entertain, the kitchen is spacious and wellappointed, boasting appliances from GE MONOGRAM as well as Carrera marble countertops and backsplash tiles. Above the island are two oversized pendant lamps that add a hint of industrial glam to the room. “The kitchen and living room are some of our favorite spaces in the home, and we love having people over to enjoy those areas with us,” says Heath.

With a little one in residence, the home has a nursery where he can sleep and play safely and comfortably, and Heath had a great deal of fun decorating it. “Out of all the rooms in our home, my favorite room to work on was probably the nursery,” she says. “It was so much fun decorating for our little miracle and getting to choose all the pieces for the room.”

Naturally, the master suite is a haven of comfort and style. Featuring Carrera marble on everything from the tiles on the floors to the shower walls and the countertops, the master bathroom is elegant and spa-like, with a free-standing tub with floor mounted faucet. As one would expect, the master bedroom is both spacious and intimate, the perfect retreat for the busy owners of the home.

Outside, the meticulously manicured lawn is lush and green, providing the perfect canvas for the white stucco and brick home whose lines are clean and minimalist. “We have a great wooded backyard for privacy, and we chose this location because we love the Sanctuary,” says Heath. “We have already had a few other homes in this community, and we love this little cul-de-sac, as well. It’s amazing to us that we get to raise Cayman in this house that I designed for the comfort and style of our family, and we’re looking forward to all the memories that we get to create here as a family.”

Sports related head injuries have increased public awareness of the terms “concussion” and “traumatic brain injury,” or TBI. But what do they mean, and should we ban our children from every sport? Annually, over 3 million people are diagnosed with a concussion in the United States, and over 10 percent of these are related to sports injuries.

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION? Not every head bump is a concussion, but many real injuries are overlooked. A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury, which can result from any acceleration-deceleration impact, such as whiplash injuries in car accidents. Many people assume a concussion means losing consciousness, but it can happen without passing out. Feeling dazed, confused, or “seeing stars” after a blow to the head is a sign of concussion. In most cases, there is no external sign of injury such as bleeding on the scalp. Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) is a dangerous, occasionally fatal, brain injury with swelling brought about by a second concussion sustained too soon after a first injury, before the brain has a chance to recover. The risk for SIS is high in contact sports and speed sports, such as football, boxing, and soccer as well as cycling and snow skiing.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET A CONCUSSION? A concussion can impair memory, speech, judgment, and even balance. Many people report fuzzy memory of the event and difficulty with short-term memory. Even mild concussions can affect mental and muscle function and should not be taken lightly. Neurosurgeons and neurologists emphasize that no concussion is truly minor. A single concussion usually does not cause permanent damage but may take weeks and months to fully recover. A second concussion can be very dangerous, especially if it’s very soon after the first, and can be permanently disabling. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Concussions cause a surprising variety of symptoms, and these can last many weeks and months, even years. Common symptoms include headache, confusion, memory loss, double vision, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), nausea, vomiting, insomnia, sensitivity to light, fatigue, trouble concentrating, and personality changes. After a bad accident, one may feel reasonably well (perhaps relieved to be alive!); but if the symptoms persist beyond a few weeks, many patients developed depression and have trouble readjusting to daily routines. As a neurosurgeon, I advise patients with concussions to take a break from work, avoid driving, and definitely avoid any sports that would risk a second injury for at least three months. There is often pressure on athletes to return to play, but if they do so too soon, the risks are significantly higher.

HOW IS CONCUSSION DIAGNOSED? It is important to see a doctor as soon as possible after a head injury. Most mild brain injuries are too subtle to see on CT or MRI scans. Therefore, the diagnosis depends on a careful history and exam with a specialist. One can see a neurologist, a neurosurgeon, or a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) specialist. Some modern brain imaging studies such as a DTI MRI can be useful to evaluate brain damage if the symptoms persist. More importantly, we evaluate brain function by doing memory and cognitive testing. Some patients will need a longer formal exam with a neuropsychologist for a complete diagnosis. In any case, everyone with a head injury should report unusual experiences to a specialist.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS? The brain recovers with rest. Deep, long sleep uninterrupted by TV or telephone sounds makes a crucial difference in recovery. Mild symptoms can be treated with a growing menu of therapies addressing every system affected, such as memory, cognition, coordination, and so on. Chronic headaches, depression, personality changes, and seizures may require medication and regular doctor visits. Although there is some speculation and pseudoscience especially around headaches, we have scientific proof that several new techniques like near-infrared low-level light therapy (LLLT) really work and can be used to treat TBI. Importantly, narcotic “pain pills” are not useful, depress the neural activity of the brain, and can cause rebound headaches.

LAST WORDS: The brain is the most complex and valuable organ. Traumatic brain injury is common, easy to come by, and difficult to treat. The most dangerous head injuries in children arise from use of ATV and other recreational vehicles. “Tall enough to drive one” is seldom old enough. Helmets make a huge difference in limiting injury and should be worn in all high-speed sports. Everyone with TBI needs lots of family and clinical support. Brain injury is not something to be “tough” about; no one can “work through it” like a stiff joint or a sore back. TBI can improve with rest and new medical therapies. Play it safe, and do not get Second Impact Syndrome (SIS)!

assius Clay may not be a name recognizable right away, but Muhammed Ali’s name is now reverberated all over the world. Norma Jeane Mortenson sounds like a vanilla soand-so, but Marilyn Monroe with her white dress skirt blowing in the breeze from a subway grate is still one of the most popular images to this day.

Different names, but they are one and the same. Now, take Covington-native Patrick Theriot who helps run a successful business that I bet you’ve heard of - See-Hear Productions. Though indistinguishable as he may be apart from his success, it’s time to learn a little bit about the man behind the company. Known for its flash and pizzazz, See-Hear Productions was founded in 2002 and started off modestly with a goal of helping pharmaceutical and oil field industries with educational conferences by producing necessities, such as audio and visual support. Fast forward to 2021, and its resume has seen quite the glitzy boost. See-Hear has transitioned and now specializes in high-end experiences for the social and brand activation markets. It provides custom tailored production solutions like audio video and lighting needs as well a custom fabrication of scenic elements. In short, these team members work on very lavish events, some that cost millions of dollars to produce.

“My kids think what I do is insanely fun. They don’t “The goal is to find out what’s going to make the most impact on the end user or the guest in the seat. What’s the experience at the event? And then, try to heighten that piece of the puzzle,” explains Patrick. “It starts with a theme and brainstorming with a collaborative team whether that’s a planner or producer. Maybe it’s a Christmas event, but with an artistic spin on it. Then, I grab a pencil and a piece of paper. Most of the time it begins with rough sketches that turn into 3D renderings and then get brought to life.” From Serena Williams’ Wedding, to Drew Brees’ surprise 40th Birthday party, to private parties with entertainment by Drake, Michael Bublé, Rihanna and more, Patrick has certainly left his mark when it comes to helping transform a space into an enchanting and memorable event. “I never imagined myself in this role. I feel like I fell into this. I can’t imagine doing anything else. But I never knew this type of career would’ve existed,” says Patrick. “My kids think what I do is insanely fun. They don’t necessarily know the hard work involved, but they want to know who the next headliner is.” When he’s not traveling the country as a visionary for the elite, Patrick spends his valuable free time at home with his wife of almost 20 years, Misty, and two daughters, Skylar and Camden. Skylar is 19 years old and a sophomore at University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she is a member of the Tri Delta sorority. Like her father, she showcases her creative skills through photography and owns her own successful business. Camden, who’s 15 and a sophomore Mandeville High School, also has the talent gene with her love of dance. She’s also passionate about her church, St. Timothy on the Northshore. 50

necessarily know the hard work involved, but they want to know who the next headliner is.”

With events that stretch from NYC to L.A., Patrick makes sure to also show the love close to home by getting involved with local fundraisers, like this year’s Mutts to Models. “Recently, we started collaborating on a fundraising event called Mutts to Models that will be held here on the Northshore,” says Patrick. “This is a combination of a friendship with one of my very first clients, Denise Gutnisky, and a passion to give back. I have been on the President’s Council and involved in fundraising for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center for 8 years. This year MB wasn’t scheduled to have a signature fundraising event, so when Denise approached me with the idea of Mutts to Models benefitting Mary Bird and St. Tammany Parish’s open admission animal shelter, of course, we were all in.” Creative director, father, and entrepreneur only scratches the surface of what friends and family consider Patrick Theriot to be. He, the man that wears many hats, desires to first and foremost be known as a proud Northshore resident.

After their first date—a Rangers vs. Astros game seated behind the Rangers dugout—the two became inseparable; and after three years of dating, they knew that they wanted to be together forever. “Eric pulled off the greatest surprise ever when he decided to propose in Crested Butte,” recalls Megan, who works as a financial analyst/CPA, while Eric is a project manager for a custom home builder. “He was a sneaky one, throwing in little comments here and there that derailed any thought of him possibly proposing on this trip. Besides, the trip had been planned a year in advance by my mom and aunt—and not with the idea of Eric proposing. It was just a family trip to the mountains. So we arrived a day earlier than my parents and brother, and then we went out for an early hike with my cousin, Chris, the day of their arrival. He wanted to show us the mountain before everyone arrived...or so I was told. We left the condo before 7 a.m., hiked to the top of the trail, chatted there for a bit while taking in the beauty around us, and then began our trek back down the mountain. As we made our way through a ravine filled with wildflowers, I asked Chris if he wouldn't mind taking a picture for us. He snapped two photos, and then the next thing I remember is seeing Eric next to me down on one knee. I had never felt such overwhelming joy in my entire life—and my face says it all in the photos. It was such a whirlwind of emotion and excitement that I had to ask Eric afterwards if I had even said yes!”

“We were actually the first wedding at the venue post-COVID restrictions. All restrictions were lifted only days before our wedding by the City of New Orleans—that was the biggest and best surprise along the way.”

Nine months later, on May 29, 2021—their four-year dating anniversary—Megan walked down the aisle at Felicity Church wearing a fit and flare lace gown with a deep neckline and back as Eric waited to meet his bride. As 140 of their friends and family watched, the couple were pronounced married by Megan’s cousin, who served as the officiant —and then the celebration really began.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds joined their guests on-site at the church for their reception, complete with a buffet of Cajun classics that included a po’boy station. The celebration was kept lively by a karaoke rendition of Carley Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe” by Megan and one of her cousins’ husbands and some singular dance moves. “One of Eric's groomsmen's girlfriends did the worm twice during the reception!” Megan recalls with

a laugh. And though the band may have had to pull in a ringer to substitute for their usual lead singer, no one had any complaints for the switch-up. “She was incredible!” says Megan. Having danced and dined…and danced some more, the couple cut into their wedding cake, a two-tier almond cake with buttercream frosting, as well as a berry Chantilly cake. With a happy send-off from their loved ones, Megan and Eric went on their way to honeymoon in St. John, USVI. Now back home in Houston, the Bertuccis are happily looking forward to a future filled with many more chapters of an already amazing story.

o the math, and no one would ever be able to pay a stay-at-home mom what they’re worth. Housekeeper, cook, playmate, teacher, mentor, role model, chauffeur, nurse…they do it all, and there isn’t a timecard to punch that puts them on or off the clock. It’s a 24-hours-a-day, 7-daysa-week job, and it takes a great deal of commitment and dedication. For Janell Magenheimer, being “just a mom” to her kids is something she takes great pride in, something that she knows deep in her soul is her calling.

Married to her husband, Eddie, for 13 years, Magenheimer has a son and three daughters ranging in ages from 12 to five. “Being a devoted mother to four very busy and active kids has been my biggest blessing in life, and they keep me going every day!” says Magenheimer, whose side hustle is being a representative for Zyia Activewear. “I had a family before I even knew I was ready to start a family. I have not had a set career, but I have had titles and positions that gave me great experience, and that has been something I carried with me into motherhood.”

“I want my children to always know that I am here for them and that I will always love them, regardless of where life takes them.”

Being there for her children has been something she feels is important—and the best thing for her family. “I have learned that being at home with my kids is the best thing I can do for all of us. I really admire moms who work a 9 to 5 job or that have jobs where they can’t spend as much time with their kids, because I know that it must be hard for them to have to be away from their children,” says Magenheimer. While she could easily feel the pressures of society to take on a job outside of the home, Magenheimer is steadfast in the belief that she is serving her children in the best way she can. “I feel that my kids know that their lives are being cared for every step of the way, and they know they have me for anything they need,” she says. “And it really fulfills my life as a mother to know that I can provide everything they need. My mother was a dedicated stay-at-home mother, as well, and she was my biggest inspiration to do the same for my kids.” With four kids, Magenheimer certainly has her hands full, but she’s incredibly proud of her big, energetic family. “I am very proud that I had four children!” says the 37 year-old with a laugh. “I came from a large family—I was the youngest of eight. So I knew I would be able to handle a big family.

74

SUPERMOM

Did I actually think I’d have four kids, though? No! My husband always wanted to have a large family of six kids. He was an only child, so I think he always dreamed of a big family. It seemed as though the more kids we had, the more we started to feel like life was becoming more complete.” As her children get older, Magenheimer hopes they take the best of what she teaches them and remembers, above all, her love for them. “I want my children to always know that I am here for them and that I will always love them, regardless of where life takes them,” she says. “I couldn’t imagine that I could let my kids go too far from me, but I have to let them live their dreams. I want them to know that my time spent being their mother was the best time spent in my life. These years have been flying by, so I really try to be a part of everything they do.” Naturally, family time is incredibly important, and the Magenheimers have some very special traditions. “Dinner together

at the table is very important to us, and that is the time we get to have an uninterrupted conversation about everyone’s day,” she says. “Sometimes a dinner together every night is not possible, so I make a point to set time aside to talk with my kids. I like them to know they can come talk to me about anything. We also spend a lot of time on the water during the warmer months. We fish, and I’ve taught them how to ski and wake board. During the school year, we are very busy with football, cheer, soccer, and tennis; so we traditionally spend all our time going to everyone’s games together. It’s very important to me that my kids support one another and go to the games. They know their family is there supporting them.” As much as she teaches her children, Magenheimer has also learned a great deal from her children. “I have learned to live life to the fullest,” she says. “They keep me motivated to be a better version of myself every single day. I try to be the best mom I can be, because of the unconditional love they’ve blessed me with.”
