FROM THE EDITOR
As we welcome the arrival of spring, I am filled with a sense of renewal and optimism. The longer days, warmer weather, and blooming flowers are a reminder that there is always a new chapter waiting to unfold. As we move forward, let us embrace this season of growth and change.
This issue features an article on the new construction of Frank Stuart and Vince Liuzza’s lakefront home, which combines modern aesthetics with a Southern feel. Additionally, we showcase the Brickhouse family of nine, and highlight community leader Kelly LaRocca, who has made an impact as Director of the St. Tammany Parish Library since 2019. Last but certainly not least, The Blue Room at the Roosevelt wedding of Demi and Tommy is both stunning and sophisticated.
We are delighted to continue providing a platform for highlighting business leaders, community events, and local charities. Thank you for allowing us to be a valuable resource. Stay tuned for our upcoming Real Estate Issue next month.

Kids join the fight
and Children’s Hospital New Orleans reimagine the child healthcare experience with first of its kind ‘Walker’s Imaginarium’, a 12,000 sq. ft center that will bring play, learning and fun to children receiving care in the hospital, in loving memory of Walker Beery.
With a shared vision to build a healthier future for children, the two organizations are teaming up to raise funds for the $10M project which will be located on the main campus of Children’s Hospital New Orleans.
Imagine a place where kids can discover, learn, play and just be kids - in a hospital. Children’s Hospital New Orleans and Kids Join the Fight did. The two organizations have announced plans to build a visionary, 12,000 square foot enrichment center located on the hospital’s main campus.
The center is named ‘Walker’s Imaginarium’ in memory of Walker Beery, the brave boy who launched Kids Join The Fight before he passed away following a courageous fight against pediatric brain cancer last September.
Thanks to Walker’s vision to make a difference for other children like him and the generosity of friends and supporters, this inspired project will provide a therapeutic space for patients and families to thrive, find joy, and enjoy time together while in the hospital.
“Being in a hospital setting can be scary for any child,” said John R. Nickens IV, President and Chief Executive Officer at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. “We believe that children learn and heal through play, and we must meet them where they are. This project does just that – delivering a playful and energizing environment that will create more positive healthcare experiences. That’s what our partnership with Kids Join The Fight is all about.”
In addition to offering an innovative environment for kids receiving care in the hospital, Walker’s Imaginarium also provides opportunities to invite the community in, creating a unique opportunity where sick and well children can safely interact, engage, and support one another through empathy and
encouragement, including siblings, families, friends, visiting groups and the community.
As Louisiana’s premier children’s hospital, Children’s Hospital New Orleans has delivered expert healthcare
for children across Louisiana and the Gulf South for more than 65 years. With a recently completed $300 million transformation of its main campus in New Orleans, Children’s Hospital provides the highest level of pediatric care in the state, backed by more than 600 pediatric-trained providers, and partnerships with LSU Health New Orleans and Tulane University School of Medicine. Children’s Hospital also operates ambulatory clinics across Louisiana and the Gulf South including 12 primary care clinics and nine specialty clinics from Lake Charles to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

THE BOOK LOVER
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
Since moving to the Northshore, a few years before Hurricane Katrina had her way with the Louisiana coast, Kelly LaRocca has carved out a career in the St. Tammany Parish library system, working her way up through the annals—first, as a reference librarian before becoming branch manager, assistant director and then stepping into the role of interim director in 2018. In 2019, she was permanently selected to the position of director.
What that role of “director” brings to her daily responsibilities varies, but LaRocca has 150 library employees spread across 12 locations under her charge. “I work with the board in developing and maintaining policies, work with the staff on procedures that put those policies into action, and am directly responsible for the budget and finances of the library,” she says. “Over the last two years, I have also been heading up our strategic planning process. Although there are certainly cycles to the year, each day is very different.”
With reference work strong in her background, the position as reference librarian she initially took with St. Tammany was a natural fit—and over the past two years, she has shown that natural acumen in her role as director. A passionate advocate for literacy, LaRocca’s love for the library is one born of the understanding for what the institution means for the community. “The best thing about the public library is the number of lives we touch and the needs we are able to meet,” she says. “The smile on someone's face when you can connect them with what they are looking for and the wonder on the faces of little ones during story time is magical. There is always something for all ages going on at the library.
“Libraries are community centers providing opportunities for learning and self-discovery,” LaRocca continues. “Any given day, we help students of all ages with research, help someone find that next great read, provide a connection for a senior who joins a book club, assist job seekers with their resume or a new skill, and provide tools to help new parents learn the skills they can use to get their little one ready to explore their world through books and literacy. We have computer classes, crafting classes, story times, book clubs, gardening presentations, car repair manuals, genealogy tools, computers with high-speed internet and a full range of software,
16 SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
quiet places for study, community meeting rooms, and resources and books on every topic you can imagine. We also have professional and well-trained staff to help you explore all the library has to offer. I have always liked to think about the public library as a ‘bootstrap university.’ If you want to learn something or try something new, we offer the tools and assistance to make it happen.”
Since becoming director, LaRocca has overseen a number of projects and changes to the St. Tammany library system, including the renovation of the Covington Library and entering the planning stages of Slidell Library's renovation. “I've also worked with staff to streamline and automate administrative functions that the public doesn't see, like payroll and procurement,” she says. “In addition, I have worked tirelessly on strategic planning with a concerted effort to include staff and community input. As we complete this planning process this spring, I hope that people will start to see the services and programs they asked for, such as more outreach and technology offerings.”
As a leader, LaRocca is naturally faced with challenges—the greatest of which is public awareness of the library’s importance—even in times when people have information at their fingertips on their phones. “It’s hard to express to someone who hasn't visited the library recently how vital the library is to our community and everything that we provide to our patrons,” she says. “Last year, we had 541,040 visits to the library with 967,327 items checked out. The library is well-used, and getting that message out is crucial. It is also a challenge to provide a library for people with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives—but a library should serve the entire community. As we look ahead to the future, we will be relying on all of the community input we received during our strategic planning process to make decisions about services, collections, and programs.”
LaRocca lives in Mandeville with her husband Joe, their two children, and the family cocker spaniel, Sandy. Naturally, she is an avid reader and is partial to science fiction novels and movies. “Cooking is a favorite pastime, so I make great use of the library's extensive and comprehensive cookbook collection,” she notes. She also enjoys taking long walks with Sandy and spending time outside in the garden.

SUPER MOM Danielle Brickhouse
By Liesel Schmidt
When Danielle Brickhouse started with Netchex nine years ago, she was still in college and was really just beginning her career path. After working her way through the company, she’s now a Payroll Implementation Manager for the company that has poured time into her and supported her journey to motherhood.
Married to a man who grew up with foster siblings, Brickhouse’s desire to adopt was matched by his, and the couple began fostering early in their marriage. “When we got married, Matthew’s son, Miles, became my amazing bonus son,” she says. “Still, we knew we wanted more kids—but having our own biological children was not a ‘must have’ for us. One day, the conversation just came up naturally and we were instantly on the same page. A few short weeks later, we signed up for foster classes and immediately knew we wanted to make an impact on our community by fostering. We went in with the mindset of hoping to make a difference in a child’s life but were also open to adoption if the opportunity presented itself.
“Fast forward to many foster placements and successful reunifications later, we wound up adopting our five sweet kids from foster care,” Brickhouse continues. “We adopted William (10), Harlowe (4), and a sibling set of three this past April: Isabella (8), Michael (7), and Luna (6), all through foster care. When we started our foster care journey, I don’t think we necessarily pictured ourselves with such a big family but at this point I am not sure we know how to function any other way! Then, just as Matthew and I were getting comfortable with our current routines and celebrating finally being out of the diaper stage, we got the biggest shock and found out we were pregnant!”
SUPERMOM
APRIL 2023 25
After welcoming a baby boy in February, the family grew to nine. As crazy as it can be, Brickhouse is determined to show her kids an example of work and life balance. “I genuinely love being a working mom,” she says. “I appreciate my kids more because of my job and my job more because of my kids. I want to be a model to them, especially my girls, and show them that it is possible to balance a career and motherhood if that is something they want. You can absolutely have your king cake and eat it, too.
“I hope that me being a working mom also encourages my kids to always have some level of independence,” she goes on. “However, I want them to equally understand that independence does not mean you are not part of a team. I want our children to recognize that I can earn my own income and stand on my own two feet but happily choose to work side-by-side with their dad, as a team, to create the incredible life we have. I also want our children to have every opportunity possible, to try new things that interest them, fail or succeed, and then have the opportunity to try the next thing on their list. I’m thankful to be able to work to provide this type of life for them and for a flexible job that allows me to show up for them when they need me.”
At 31, Brickhouse may still be young, but the experience she’s gained in motherhood is something that feeds into all aspects of her life and how she approaches it. “Becoming a mom, you learn a lot,” she says. “Becoming a foster parent, you learn even more. You learn about yourself, raising babies, guiding kids and teenagers, navigating the broken system, drugs, trauma, court, balancing appointments, therapy—all of it. In the beginning, it’s hard to figure out, but somehow you make it happen. I gained not only confidence, but—more importantly— a backbone, and that new-found certainty has crept into every corner of my life in the best way possible. Learning how to stand up and fight for my kids literally changed the trajectory of their lives. Having that self-assurance has changed how I tackle my job and how I manage my staff. It has given me a level of patience, understanding, and will power that otherwise would have most likely taken many more years of life and work experience to gain. For that, I could not be prouder.”
26 SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Most of all, Brickhouse is proud of the family that she has helped build. “Every time my kids think of me, I want them to feel an overwhelming sense of love,” she says. “I want our kids to know how treasured, wanted and extremely valued they are. I never want them to hesitate to run to me as their safe place, and I want them to know with absolute confidence that I would move heaven and earth for each of them. The kids have taught us to soak up every single moment, and that is something that we will always hold onto.”

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE CRUMBLE BARS
Growing up in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, we always looked forward to strawberry season! Many of my family members were strawberry farmers, and although that time has passed, it is still as special to us as it has ever been. Our berries are said to be the best, and I hope that you will one day be able to enjoy them.
Last year, I made these strawberry shortcake crumble bars, and they were a total hit. Bring them to work, for the kid’s class treats, or just simply enjoy them at home.
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup (2 sticks) softened unsalted butter
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon firmly packed light brown sugar
1 large egg at room temperature
1 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp lemon juice (for cream cheese mixture)
1 tsp lemon zest (for cream cheese mixture)
8 ounces softened cream cheese
1 cup plus ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 cup chopped strawberries
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350
Line a 13x9 baking pan with parchment paper
Using a stand mixer with a paddle, beat the butter and brown sugar on low/medium
Mix until creamy, about 4 minutes
Scrape the sides of your bowl
Add the egg, beating until just combined
Add flour, salt, vanilla until your dough forms
Add about ¾ of the dough to your pan, and press it down
Bake for about 15 minutes until it is a light golden brown
Allow it to cool in pan (Completely!)
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper
Add the rest of your dough while crumbling, onto the cookie sheet
Cook for about 8-10 minutes, until nice and golden
Allow it to cool and set aside
In a clean bowl of a stand mixer, still using the paddle attachment, add the cream cheese
Beat it on medium high until nice and smooth
Reduce it to low and slowly add your confectioners sugar (about ¼ cup at a time)
Add lemon juice and lemon zest
Transfer to a bowl and set aside
In a clean bowl of a stand mixer, this time using a whisk attachment
Beat heavy cream on medium high until stiff peaks form
Fold heavy cream mixture into the cream cheese mixture carefully
Fold in chopped strawberries
Spread into cooled pan on top of the crust
Spread evenly
Add the shortbread crumbles on top of cream cheese mixture
Refrigerate overnight (or at least 2 hours), uncovered
When completely cooled, you can carefully pick it up by the parchment paper and cut into servings
Optional:
Make it cute:
• Add freeze dried strawberries
• Add sprinkles
• Cut into cute shapes or triangles

To be effective in their work, OneWayLove works with counselors on the East and West sides of St. Tammany Parish. These counselors share the needs of children and youth, and the organization provides for those needs. “Last year, we gave $13,000 in gift cards so the kids can purchase clothes, food, and other life necessities,” says Manint. “We also ordered 50 laptop computers, and we pay for their driving schools in addition to repairing donated cars, which we then gift to the teens. One young girl is now at Loyola because of the car we gave her, while another young man went to Delta College because of the car we gave him. We give them cell phones, and therapy if needed—just whatever is needed to help them cross the finish line in life.”
While the exact number of kids they help varies from year to year, Manint estimates that roughly 100 are helped annually by OneWayLove. “Since we founded OneWayLove in 2014, I can’t even begin to count how many kids we’ve helped in total,” she says.
Clearly, the work that they do is incredibly necessary—but unfortunately, it’s also something that not every community has. “It would be great if every community, everywhere, could have an organization like OneWayLove, because there are always children that have parents who are addicted or have broken lives spiraling out of control, and these kids become abandoned and need a home and someone to love them,” Manint says. “Our desire is to stop the cycle of brokenness and to help these children see the potential within themselves. That is the only way we are ever going to make a difference in their lives, long term.”
FINDS A WAY LOVE
By Liesel Schmidt
Anyone who has stayed awake into the wee hours of the morning, mindlessly staring at the TV as they wait for sleep to come, has seen their fair share of those commercials—the ones with the abused and abandoned animals, hopelessly gazing into the camera as Sarah McLachlan sing hauntingly in the background. Hearts break over those poor, helpless animals, and their cause is one that people pour thousands of dollars into addressing.
But what of the children?
Who makes the commercials that shine a light on the millions of children and youth who are left to fend for themselves, either on the streets or finding shelter with a friend—or, in the worst cases, with someone who places them in even greater danger? Seeing the plight of these young ones, OneWayLove was created in 2014 by sisters Rosemary Manint and Sandra Douglas. “We were raised in a home of sexual abuse, so we know what it feels like to walk with your head down and to feel unworthy, and we needed desperately to give our pain a purpose,” says Manint.
“What we do is very important because we help a child that has been abandoned by their parents due to drug abuse or prison, while some parents have died, and these children become couch surfers,” she continues. “They have no one in their corner. We let them know that they are seen, heard, and cared for. This can change the trajectory of a child’s life, because they can count on us when there is no one else in their corner to help them. They feel loved and taken care of.”

OneWayLove is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, depending greatly on the generosity of the community in furthering their cause through individual and corporate donations. They also hold an annual fundraiser every March at the Slidell auditorium.
As challenging as running a non-profit can be, Manint and Douglas are constantly given affirmation that what they do is needed, through the stories of the kids who come to them. “Hearing the stories of these children and trying to put our heads on a pillow at night, knowing what they are going through is very difficult,” says Manint. “But we see the other side of their story, and that is our greatest accomplishment—seeing a child rise above their circumstances. When we meet them, their heads are down in shame or hopelessness. But after we’ve spent time with them, they are smiling and know that we are only a text away. One young girl’s stepmother tried to drown her in a bathtub, and now she is an artist who sells her drawings all over the world. Another young girl wants to begin a nonprofit and help others like we have helped her.
We stay connected long after they have graduated. We get invited to their baby showers and weddings. It warms our hearts, and our greatest reward is seeing these kids succeed in life.
“We feel like our community has changed for the better when the physical needs of a child have been met,” Manint continues. “It changes them. These kids are our future. They’re right here in our backyard, so we’re hoping to create a better community with kids that know they are loved and cared for.”

LEADING FEMALE PLASTIC SURGEON IN MANDEVILLE, LA
Dr. Michele Cooper
What Patients Are Saying
“…She was there for me every step of the way…”
When I went to Dr. Cooper, I was very nervous and afraid. I mean elective surgery is a big step. Not only did she make me feel at ease, I felt she was sincere. She didn’t make me feel as though I really needed the surgery. If anything, I walked out of there with more self confidence and that was before I actually had the surgery. She was there for me every step of the way, before and after. I have received so many compliments from the work she did. I have and will continue to recommend her to everyone.
“…Very comforting…”
I have been loving my new look ever since my surgery about 4 years ago. I enjoyed meeting Dr. Cooper and found her very comforting. She was able to give me the natural look I was going for!
“…Meticulous in every detail…”
Dr. Cooper and her staff are meticulous in every detail both medically and aesthetically. Most impeccable taste is also displayed throughout her Mandeville office building, adorned with marvelous furnishings and gallery art work.

ONE HOUSE,two homes
Looking at the white sided façade of the four-level home built on the lakefront in Old Mandeville by Frank Stuart and Vince Liuzza, one would be hard-pressed to identify this as anything other than a beautifully designed home, unified in its aesthetic and offering of a nod to traditional Southern architecture while maintaining modern appeal. But a closer examination would reveal that its interior spaces are not those of one home—but two.

We decided to build what appears to be one house but is actually two separate residences,” says Liuzza, owner of Liuzza Realty Group, and co-owner of Southern Window Accents with Stuart. “I would describe the architectural style as Southern transitional—this aesthetic typically includes features such as large front porches, tall ceilings, columns, and symmetrical facades, all of which are traditional Southern elements. At the same time, it also incorporates modern elements such as clean lines, minimalist design, and contemporary materials like glass and metal. The result is a unique blend of traditional Southern charm and modern sophistication.”

The firm worked closely with Stuart for 18 months to choose every color and finish of the exterior—from the porches and paint to the pool and rooftop deck—as well as the interior of Stuart/Liuzza residence on the second floor. “There are numerous elements that immediately grab your attention when first laying eyes on this charming property,” says Stuart. “It could be the wrought iron fence that serves as an entryway from the lakefront, the majestic oak tree located in the front yard, or the impressive grand staircase leading to our own front door.”

Direct FROM THE GROWERto You
The idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.
Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.
Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service.
Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.

DEMI TOMMY and
Despite meeting in college, Demi
and Tommy Brocato didn’t go on their first date until the summer after they graduated in 2018. Over hot dogs and conversation at Dat Dog on Freret Street in New Orleans, the two realized they had a real connection—one that required more time to explore.

Two and a half years later, Tommy took that connection to a more permanent place. “He totally surprised me,” says Demi of the day in late March of 2021 that changed their future. “We had dinner plans at one of our favorite places to eat, Mr. B’s, but at the last minute, Tommy said we were going down the street to the Cabildo first. We went to the top of the Cabildo, to the balcony that overlooks Jackson Square, and Tommy proposed. Our families were down in Jackson Square and saw it all, but I didn’t notice them until after Tommy proposed and I looked out and saw our families—and all of the people in Jackson Square—cheering! We went to dinner at Mr. B’s with our families to celebrate afterwards.”
74 SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Celebration came again on October 15, 2022, when Demi walked down the aisle at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in New Orleans to meet Tommy at the altar. Wearing a Justin Alexander strapless ball gown and a cathedral length veil by Sara Gabriel Designs, custom made with the lace and pearl beading from her mother’s wedding gown, Demi exchanged vows with Tommy as 180 of their loved ones stood in witness. “We chose Holy Name of Jesus because my grandparents met on campus while they were attending Loyola, and it’s where Demi went to college,” says Tommy.
“The priest who married us, Father Gregory Waldrop, was one of my professors at Loyola, which was really special,” Demi adds.
Having been pronounced married, the newlyweds joined their guests for a reception in The Blue Room at The Roosevelt. Enjoying an array of food that included hors d’oeuvres of blackened shrimp ravigote, goat cheese stuffed dates with candied walnuts, crab cakes, goat cheese stuffed artichoke hearts and alligator fritters, followed by a cheese and charcuterie board, pasta, shrimp and grits, and stuffed-to-order roast beef pistolettes, the Brocatos and their guests fêted their newly joined lives—with the addition of a few special touches that made the occasion even more unique.
“We commissioned a custom painting by Casey Langteau Art, which she titled ‘A Dream Day on the Avenue,’” says Demi. “She’s a New Orleans artist whose work I’ve admired for years. We put the painting on our wedding registry as an option for guests to contribute to, and we had the painting displayed at our reception for guests to see!
The piece features all of our special places: the Cabildo, where Tommy proposed, Holy Name of Jesus where we were married, and The Roosevelt where we held the reception,” says Demi.
“These three locations are in very different locations in real life, but we created this dream street of sorts that contained the locations side-by-side, with a classic St. Charles streetcar featuring their wedding date as the streetcar number,” Langteau explains.
The couple also commissioned a custom crest as part of their invitational suite from their stationer, Amber LeBlanc, that included Holy Name of Jesus and The Roosevelt with their initials.

After toasting with champagne flutes from their engagement day engraved with their engagement date, Demi and Tommy cut into their bridal cake, a three-tiered confection with two layers of almond crumb with raspberry buttercream and one layer of chocolate crumb with salted caramel buttercream, covered in white fondant with blue and gold floral accents. In honor of Tommy’s time running track for LSU in college, the groom’s cake was red velvet and LSU Track & Field-themed.
Finishing off with a late-night bite of beignets, those gathered sent the newlyweds off with a second line parade through lobby of The Roosevelt. After honeymooning in St. John, USVI, the Brocatos are back home in Houston, Texas, looking forward to adding more to their “dream street” of places with special meaning in their life together

HOLY GHOST CATHOLIC SCHOOL
14 YEARS • CURRENTLY TEACHING PK-3
Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?
I can’t say there has been a specific teacher that influenced me to become a teacher. I believe my desire to become a teacher came more from enjoying working with young children. Their innocence, love of life and desire to learn new things brings me joy.
What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?
My biggest challenge as a teacher is in getting to know each of my students as an individual. Doing so allows me to help them learn and be the best they can be.
What do you feel is the biggest reward?
My biggest reward is watching my students enjoy learning as well as watching them grow up through their years at Holy Ghost. It brings me great joy to see their eyes light up when they feel successful. Whether it is mastering skills being taught or watching them enjoy their day.
How do you make learning fun for your students?
I make learning fun for my students by using a variety of manipulatives, games, letter puppets and songs. Learning, especially at a young age, should be fun and enjoyable.
If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be?
If I could leave my students with one message it would be to know that they are loved and can do anything they set their minds to.
