Dr. Angela Buonagura
We’ve all heard the statistics about breast cancer... …that it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women… …and that one in eight women will be diagnosed in her lifetime. For Dr. Angela Buonagura, one hundred percent of the women who find themselves meeting with her on a patient basis have heard the words “breast cancer.” Each and every one of these women are depending on her expertise to keep them from becoming a mortality statistic. A practicing surgeon for 22 years, Dr. Buonagura specializes in breast cancer surgery, making her the one who performs mastectomies and lumpectomies. In the case of the former, she works in tandem with a plastic surgeon to complete tissue removal in the same surgery as a breast reconstruction. “I work with an entire team of incredible physicians and specialists who treat patients with breast cancer,” she says. “Amazing nurse practitioners, navigators, nurses, surgical staff, medical assistants and administrative staff. We all do this together. Every one of us has tremendous dedication to our patients, and we all go above and beyond. I can't do it without them.”

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
Doctor Buonagura has been dreaming of being a doctor since she was four years old—and that passion has followed her through medical school, residencies and extremely taxing schedules. “I decided that becoming a surgeon would be an opportunity to not only work with patients to diagnose their problems but also deliver a change for them and help them in a physically profound way,” she observes. “I wanted to help the women—as well as the men—suffering from this devastating disease in my community. Facing the uncertainties of cancer is such a scary time, and I try to ease that burden for them. I want my patients to feel safe and know that I am in it with them. As difficult a road as it is to work in this specialty, I care deeply for each of my patients. I pray for them daily and work my hardest to help them win their battle.” First joining the St. Tammany Health System team in 2001, she spent ten years with the organization before leaving in 2011 to work with a hospital in Arkansas. In 2020, she returned to the health system that she so greatly admires on the Northshore. “It’s a phenomenal system,” Dr. Buonagura says. “It’s warm, patient-centered, community care that makes everyone who comes through the doors feel as though they are being given the highest level of treatment. So many hospitals and health care systems have lost that patient-centric focus and standard of care, and I’m proud to be part of one that still holds these values and principals.”
COMMUNITY LEADER
Doctor Buonagura herself holds to that standard of care in her own practice: “I treat every patient with personal care and do as much research as I can to stay on the cutting edge of treatments and protocols,” she says. “I do everything I can to fight alongside my patients, and this is a responsibility that drives me every day. Over my past two decades of practicing, I’ve seen amazing advances bring us to a place where we achieve positive outcomes in an overwhelming number of cases. Here at St. Tammany Health System, we were the first in the region to begin injecting Magtrace lymphatic tracers into the breast, which marks any cancerous lymph nodes and aids in identifying areas where cancer may lie. This is extremely effective in preventing unnecessary surgery. Along with Ochsner Health System, we have partnered with MD Anderson Cancer Center. We are very excited about this, as it enables us to share their treatment protocols, brilliant cancer knowledge and research trials with cancer fighting medications.” The wife and mother enjoys traveling in her free time and spending as much time as she can with her daughter and her husband. “My precious angel has been such a blessing to her father and me, and cares for the work I do,” Dr. Buonagura says. “My husband is a medical professional himself, so he understands my demanding schedule and is an incredible support.”

How has cancer impacted your life or why do you want to personally be part of the St. Tammany UNITED in Pink Campaign?
In South Louisiana, we are no stranger to cancer and the impact it makes on our friends and families. Each of us have been touched by the painful impact this disease has inflicted on us. From the personal standpoint, my parents both struggled with this disease. My dad had a struggle with prostate cancer, and my mom has not only had breast cancer but is currently battling lung cancer, despite having never smoked. I also have had cousins and other family and friends who have died from this disease. From a professional perspective, we see so many people in the communities and within the employees we service struggle with the personal and financial impact cancer creates.
Why is cancer screening, education and prevention important to you and in our community?
Cancer takes a toll on not only the person impacted, but also on the family that supports them. Cancer is a financial roadblock that robs people of their productivity and savings. Simple screenings and prevention steps can be the single greatest investment we can make in our effort to reduce the impact on our community.
What is your connection with the St. Tammany Health System / St. Tammany Hospital Foundation?
While many people believe their insurance covers the cost of dealing with healthcare and cancer treatment, it does not. We see and know first hand the need people have in all aspects of support while they battle this disease. Early in my career, our company focused on ways to give back to the community. This initiative showed and helped me learn the level of need and the impact philanthropy plays in supporting a health community. St. Tammany Health System and the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation, play a critical role in not just the treatment but also all aspects of care and removes barriers people have as they face this journey. Once you understand the impact, the commitment and passion is easy.
Why do you think it is important to give back to your community and/or the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation? We live in a great community. While we face challenges and things are far from perfect, most in St. Tammany feel blessed to raise our kids and retire in such a great place. But to make your community different—better—takes an investment. Taking care of your fellow citizens and investing in your community should not and can’t be left to the government. If we want a great community, investing in it will only make it better. Having a great healthcare system is like having a great school system. The better we make this for our community, the better our quality of life. We will continue to grow and improve our quality of life for ourselves and our kids. Investing in this is fundamental to a great community. Investing/donating also has the added benefit of making you feel you are making a difference.

GRANTHAM

By Liesel Schmidt
Looking at the big picture, Kelli Boudreaux might be in treatment for the rest of her life and never hear the word “remission,” but the wife and mother of four doesn’t let that stop her from living life to the fullest, in every way that she can. “I love spending time with family as much as possible and traveling,” she says. “In 2023 alone, I’ve taken the Disney cruise as well as a Carnival cruise, went to the beach with my girlfriends, and took a big family vacation to Gatlinburg—and the year isn’t over yet.”
Being a single mother is never easy—but the challenge becomes even greater in the face of a cancer diagnosis. Jodi Grantham had been raising her two young children on her own when she heard those devastating words in February of 2022. Five months later, there was no evidence of the breast cancer she was being treated for, and as of March 2023, she had finally completed all of her treatments. “The number one reason I have stayed strong through all of this has been my two amazing children and my family,” says Grantham. “I’m a single mother, and I had no other choice but to be strong.”
“I’ve been living by
Diagnosed in early 2019 with stage the saying, ‘Let your four breast cancer, Boudreaux was Faith be bigger than immediately facing the reality that there your Fear.’” is no cure and remission is not possible at such an advanced stage. However, a recent pet scan showed no evidence of disease. “I’ve been living by the saying, ‘Let your Faith be bigger than your Fear,’” she says. “I even had that tattooed on my wrist so I would never forget it. Fear is nothing but a liar. Another thing I learned from one of my sons, who heard this from one of his commanding officers during basic training for a military school, is the phrase, ‘Embrace the Suck.’ I have this tattooed on my other wrist. It’s very true to this type of journey. While this whole thing sucks, embrace it. It’s your journey and what God has intended for you.” Boudreaux has been a part of You Night for over a year and considers it to be one of her saviors. “Meeting these ladies was the best thing that God put in my path,” she says. “They are basically the only people on earth that literally know how I feel because they’ve experienced it.”
Says the registered nurse, “My advice to women who are newly diagnosed would be to stay strong and have a positive attitude. There are days when you want to give up, but it’s so important to remain strong and fight! Win the day!” Grantham joined the 2023 class of You Night and has found solace and strength in the ranks of its members. “I feel like You Night has helped me by emotionally processing my cancer “The number one diagnosis using story crafting,” she says. reason I have stayed “You Night has also introduced me to strong through all of some amazing women who understand this has been my two what I have been through on a physical amazing children and and emotional level. omen are twice as likely as men to experience anxiety or depression during their lives. We undergo times of great emotional and hormonal change which can be particularly challenging.
As a psychiatrist with an interest in reproductive mental health (and a mother of two myself!), there is a special place in my heart for moms enduring postpartum anxiety and/or depression. These issues are more common than you’d think—affecting 17.2% of mothers worldwide. I want more people to recognize the signs, because it’s not always easy to know what’s normal and what’s not…especially when you’re in the trenches—sleep deprived and wearing someone else’s breakfast. Here’s a list of common symptoms that can show up not only after the baby is born but during pregnancy too.
You can’t sleep.
Let’s be real. Sleep is hard to come by for anyone when there is a newborn in the house, but people with postpartum depression or anxiety can have a hard time sleeping even when the baby is sleeping. They can feel truly exhausted but perhaps can’t relax enough to turn their mind off.
Scary images or thoughts pop in your head.
It’s normal to be more worried once our babies arrive...someone’s life literally depends on you after all! Our brains are biologically wired to be on overdrive during this time, which makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint. A lot of times, new moms can have intrusive images of something scary and horrible happening to their baby, and while these can be really freaky or distressing, they are considered normal. It becomes a problem though when these thoughts are hard to let go of or cause us to avoid situations we would typically view as safe.
You don’t feel bonded to your baby.
Let’s blame Instagram-perfect newborn photo sessions for the mom-guilt on this one. We don’t all have the gushy “love at first sight” experience when we first meet our baby. Some of us take a while to warm up to people, including our babies. What becomes worrisome is when moms tell me that the bond isn’t progressing or they feel so disconnected that they wonder if they’ll ever be able to feel it.
You feel irritable or sad most of the time.
We’ve all heard about the “Baby Blues” that occur in most women after they have a baby. The roller coaster that we ride in the 48 hours after birth is the single largest hormonal change over the shortest time period that a woman experiences in her life after all. Baby blues doesn’t mean you’re sad ALL the time, and it goes away within two weeks, so if you’re experiencing tearfulness and irritability for longer, then maybe it’s PPD. While being a new mom isn’t a walk in the park, it shouldn’t be dreadful either.
You aren’t able to feel pleasure or enjoy your favorite activities like you used to.
It’s to be expected that your priorities change after having a baby…those late-night dinner reservations don’t sound quite as fun when you know you’ll be up rocking someone all night. People with anxiety or depression will find themselves not engaging in many of their old favorite activities though, not just because of time constraints, but because nothing feels fun anymore.
You feel super guilty or like you’re failing as a mother. We all doubt ourselves as parents, especially when it’s our first time. As soon as you get the hang of it, BOOM, your baby changes! Frustration with this can be expected, but depression sounds like, “My baby deserves a better mom than me” or “Maybe I’m not cut out to be a mom.”
You have thoughts your family would be better off without you.
This is the big one that no one likes talking about. If you’re at the point where dying, disappearing, or “pressing pause on life” sounds like a good option or the only way out, then it’s definitely time to reach out to someone. If this is you, please consider calling the suicide hotline, 988, or presenting to your local emergency room. Recognizing these signs and seeking help is the first step to feeling like yourself again. I love working with new moms because the work we do together benefits not only you, but your baby too! Research continues to show the detrimental effects that untreated maternal mental illness can have on our children, but that doesn’t have to be your story. There are so many options out there to help you flourish.

Tristan
DUPÉPÉ
PICOLO
By Liesel Schmidt
By Liesel Schmidt
Seven months after receiving her breast cancer diagnosis in June of 2021, Tristan Dupépé was cancer-free, having been through month after month of chemo, radiation, and a bilateral mastectomy. Those grueling months left her spent—physically and emotionally—but she learned to seek the support of the people who love her.
Cancer has been a familiar foe of Michelle Picolo’s since her early 20s, when she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Twenty-three years later, she was diagnosed with bilateral renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer). Both kinds of cancer came back with a reoccurrence of the melanoma in 2021 and kidney cancer in 2022. Now, the melanoma is in remission, but she currently has stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer that has spread to her lungs.
“When you are going through something like this, you can’t be afraid to ask for help and lean on those around you,” Dupépé advises. “Also, keep your body moving whenever you can. It’s great for your physical and mental health. And always cherish each day as the blessing that it is.” Faith has been a great healer for Dupépé, as has the love of her husband and four children. “My faith has kept me strong,” she says. “Faith and the support of my amazing family and friends kept me motivated to fight and do everything I had to do. As hard as it was, I can now see the blessings that have come from my cancer. PAUL MYERS Northshore Market President, Metairie Bank
How has cancer impacted your life or why do you want to personally be part of the St. Tammany UNITED in Pink Campaign?
Our family has experienced the pain and loss of cancer--not only of family members but also of friends at various stages in life. I did not hesitate to partner with such a phenomenally community-minded organization. In order for our community to thrive, we must establish and maintain healthy habits. Far too often, we focus on others while neglecting ourselves. Of course, caring for our community and those in it is admirable, phenomenal, even. However, we must recognize we only have one body. We must care for it just as we care for the health and welfare of others.
Why is cancer screening, education and prevention important to you and in our community?
The advancements in screening and treatment of cancer have dramatically changed the outcome and life expectancy of those diagnosed. Early detection can easily be the difference between a terminal diagnosis or living a long and healthy life.

Why do you think it is important to give back to your community?
As a community bank/small business in St. Tammany, we have to support other community-based organizations. IMPACT & GIVE BACK
ON MISSION:
New Orleans Mission’s Continuing Work
A
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

s much as New Orleans capitalizes on the party scene and letting the good times roll, life isn’t always easy in the Big Easy. Substance abuse, trafficking, and homelessness have long been problems plaguing the city—and organizations like the New Orleans Mission battle these issues by reaching out a hand to help those in need.
Founded in 1989 by Christian missionaries from California, the New Orleans Mission was created to provide food, clothing, and shelter for the homeless and broken in the New Orleans community. “We are a platform used by God to change lives,” says development coordinator Sarah Warthan. “As an emergency shelter, we provide food, clothing, refuge, and spiritual guidance to the region’s homeless, hurting, and hungry. Our strategy is to rescue people from physical and sexual abuse, addiction, mental illness, and financial hardship. We work to strengthen the recovery efforts of the people seeking our support to overcome addiction and foster their successful re-integration into society as healthy, disciplined, and skilled individuals who are ready to lead a sustainable, productive, purpose-driven life. We want to reunite these transformed souls with their families, allowing time and space to restore broken relationships as they move forward to become who God created them to be.”

IMPACT & GIVE BACK New Orleans Mission offers a year-long recovery program focusing on the whole person—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually—all for no cost. They also offer long-term recovery programs at the Lynhaven Retreat in Hammond and the Giving Hope Retreat in Lacombe. Naturally, funding must come from somewhere, and NOM depends on the generosity of businesses, individuals, and private grants as well as the efforts of fundraising events. Since its inception in 1989, the organization has worked with over 100,000 people to give them better lives; and each year, more than 6,200 unique individuals come seeking the aid of the mission. Clearly, the need is great—and growing greater.
“In this current season, there's an increasing demand but limited resources available,” Warthan says. “Tackling the complex task of tending to immediate physical needs while embarking on the healing journey and addressing the underlying issues can seem overwhelming. However, it's the crucial initial stride toward achieving significant life changes. We don't aim to simply provide a ‘quick-fix pill’ to numb the pain. Instead, our goal is to uncover the root causes of the pain. To do this, we require a dedicated staff who can support and guide each individual on their own path to healing.”
REDEMPTION NOLA is a Christian non-profit organization that works with women who have been rescued from human trafficking, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and mental illness. We take donated cast-off jewelry and create a new one-of-a-kind piece. Each piece of jewelry is created by one of our survivors. Each has a story of how God has taken their broken life and redeemed it, giving them a new life purpose.

As challenging as embarking on this path may be, NOM has seen the success of many who have walked through their doors broken, leaving whole and healthy, with futures filled with hope and promise. “The journey from a life marked by hopelessness, addiction, years of mental illness, and medication dependence to a state of liberation, free from substance addiction, and living a purpose-driven life is nothing short of a profound transformation,” says Warthan. “This transformation signifies not just a new identity, but a deep relationship with Jesus.” As NOM continues its work, their enduring aspiration to witness the healing and transformation of even more lives goes on—but they need help to forge on. “Through our program, we aim to nurture individuals into disciples who embrace the purpose that God intended for them to live,” Warthan explains. “With this goal in mind, we are currently facing a pressing need for additional transitional housing. Given the rising cost of living, our disciples are encountering greater challenges when it comes to establishing independence. Expanding our transitional housing options would extend their stay with us, allowing for a more thorough healing process and ensuring that they are released when they are truly prepared, both physically and spiritually. We need to increase awareness of our work as well as the need that our community faces. God has tasked us with a mission, and we will continue to serve that mission as long as there is a need.”

As a project manager for clinical trials at Syneos Health, Michelle Kessling is someone who knows how the healthcare system works—and how important it is to have a team of professionals in your corner that you feel “Find a health care you can truly trust. After her diagnosis team that you trust of choriocarcinoma at the end of 2021, and rely on faith, family Kessling underwent four months of and friends.” treatment that eventually brought her into remission and cured her.
When Lauren Gee’s “routine screening” for colon cancer came back showing stage 1 colon cancer in 2021, the then-50-year-old wife and stepmother of two was extremely grateful that her cancer had been caught early. Within three weeks of that screening, she’d had a hemicolectomy with approximately 30 inches of her sigmoid colon removed. Fortunately, Gee did not need any further treatments.
“Find a health care team that you trust and rely on faith, family and friends,” says Kessling, a mother of two daughters whom she is raising with her husband. “People want to help, and it’s so important to realize that accepting help is strength, not weakness. My faith in God has been my primary source of strength, in addition to the faith and love of my family and friends. I had to stay strong for my daughters, as they had challenges early in life and my fight was for them.” Kessling joined the 2023 class of You Night and believes in the power of support. “I joined at the suggestion of one of my oncologists and have experienced emotional healing through the programs such as Storycrafting and ScArt,” she says. “I’m inspired daily by the other women in the program. While a cancer diagnosis is terrible, seeing women thrive despite this disease has changed what cancer ‘looks like’ to me. I’m less fearful of cancer after seeing so many women from the very things that aim to cure them. You Night was the program that I didn’t know I needed.”
As a special ed teacher at St. Paul’s School in Covington, Gee is someone who naturally sees beyond the challenges to find the triumphs—and that held true, even in the face of cancer. “I am a firm believer that there is good to be found in every circumstance, especially the ones outside of our control,” she says. “Approaching each scan, infusion, blood test and surgery with a grateful heart goes a long way towards impacting our mental health. At this point, we already have cancer. We can't fix what already is, but we can fix how we deal with it.”
“Approaching each scan, infusion, blood test & surgery with a grateful heart goes a long way towards impacting our mental health.”
Gee has been a member of You Night for the past two years and has found strength in their sisterhood. “My life is forever changed for the better because of You Night,” she says. “I have rediscovered parts of me that were long ago buried and hidden under about cancer; it's about relearning to live the rest of your life as God intended.
“My faith and my family have been my rocks throughout this entire journey,” Gee goes on. “Living my life knowing that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him gave me the perspective I needed to move forward into a bigger and better life than I ever imagined.”

JACKSON
THORNHILL
By Liesel Schmidt
By Liesel Schmidt
Paula Jackson was a 32-year-old mother of five, with an eightmonth-old infant, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993. “I’d found a lump in my left breast while I was on a cruise with my husband, and at first, I thought it was mastitis,” Jackson recalls. “It was devastating to hear that it was actually cancer, but because of my babies, I had to stay strong.”
Knowing her family history of breast cancer, Sandra Thornhill has been vigilant about her annual mammograms since her early 40s. Then, in December of 2022, her worst fear came true: she was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma. After genetic testing revealed that her cancer was not genetic but environmental in nature, Thornhill underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction in March of 2023. “I was blessed to have a great team of doctors, nurses, and office staff who helped me to survive the entire process,” says the retired APRN. “For many years, I took care of others and now it was my turn to be the patient.”
With the support of family and friends, Jackson started rigorous chemo treatments—with her infant daughter right there with her. She even went right back to work as an X-ray tech during chemo. “The one thing that got me through was my babies, knowing that I had to take care of them and that I had to stay in a positive state of mind for them,” she says.
“I stay as positive as possible by surrounding myself with positive people and pray a lot to reduce stress.”
Jackson attended a support group at Ochsner called Look Good, Feel Better that offered tips and tricks for using makeup and wearing scarves, in addition to providing wigs. “My kids thought it was funny because I used to take the wig off and hit them with it to make them laugh and drive around with it hanging from the rearview mirror,” she says. “I wanted their lives to be as normal as possible.” Jackson underwent surgery and reconstruction as well as genetic testing because of her daughters. “I didn’t want them to have to worry the rest of their lives,” she notes. “I stay as positive as possible by surrounding myself with positive people and pray a lot to reduce stress. I think these are the most important remedies for me.”

The wife and mother of three credits her strength to the numerous prayers of the people in her life. “It was so powerful that I could feel it,” says Thornhill, who has six grandchildren that she adores. “The prayers helped me to stay calm and find inner peace. DR. MICHELE COOPER
LEADING FEMALE PLASTIC SURGEON IN MANDEVILLE, LA
How to Lose Weight As a plastic surgeon, I regularly see patients seeking tummy tucks or liposuction, who could benefit from weight loss prior to surgery. While tummy tucks and liposuction can drastically improve a patient’s figure, they do very little towards reducing a patient’s weight. As the patient’s body mass index or BMI increases over 25, their risk of having surgical or post-surgical complications increases too. For these patients, weight loss prior to surgery not only improves patients’ cosmetic results but also reduces the risk of complications during and after surgery. After researching the use and efficacy of semaglutide for weight loss, I began using this medication to assist my patients in obtaining their ideal weight. The results were unprecedented with both doctor and patient excited about the changes we were seeing. But even more important than their new self-confidence was that the patients were now healthier than they were before!
SEMAGLUTIDE: A BRIEF OVERVIEW
Semaglutide is more commonly known by its trade names Ozempic®and Wegovy®, while tirzepatide is commonly known as Mounjaro®. Both semaglutide and tirzepatide stimulate receptors for a gut hormone released after eating, called Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (“GLP-1”). The main functions of GLP-1 are as follows: 1. Stimulates insulin secretion, thus, lowering blood glucose. 2. Slows the emptying of the stomach; and 3. Works on receptors in the brain to give a feeling of fullness or satiety.
Mounjaro® adds a second hormone receptor agonist called Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (“GIP”), which also increases glucose-induced insulin secretion and helps regulate bodyweight but, unlike GLP-1, adds fat and energy production as a target. The combination of GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists is significantly more effective than either GLP-1 RA or GIP -1 RA alone, for: • Weight loss. • Reduction of HbA1c (“hemoglobin A1C,” a form of hemoglobin that is chemically linked to sugar and is measured by the amount of blood sugar, or glucose, attached to an individual’s hemoglobin); and • Lowering blood glucose levels.
WHY IS THIS EXCITING?
Obesity is now recognized for what it is: a legitimate chronic medical condition that is directly related to metabolic hormone insufficiencies. According to the most recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”), approximately 4 out of every 10 adults and approximately 1 out of every 5 children in America suffer from obesity. Knowing what hormones lead to obesity and creating drugs to target them can helps make obesity a disease of the past and may, lengthen life spans by decreasing the morbidities related to obesity, like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The implications of drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide are momentous, as a substantial portion of our population suffers from obesity and stands to benefit from these innovative treatments.
WHO SHOULD ASK THEIR DOCTOR ABOUT THESE TREATMENTS?
1. Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes; and/or 2. Individuals with a body mass index (“BMI”) over 26. 3. Individuals with polycystic ovary syndrome. 4. Individuals with metabolic syndrome.
** Although these drugs are not FDA-approved for all the medical conditions above, they can be prescribed off-label if your physician thinks you may benefit.
HOW ARE THESE DRUGS PRESCRIBED?
A physician must evaluate a patients’ need for treatment and provide a prescription if treatment is warranted. Ultimately, every insurer and every insurance policy may vary on their terms of coverage for these medications. However, most will require your physician to obtain prior authorization and will require prior treatment for type 2 diabetes. Name-brand drugs Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® are available at your local pharmacy and covered by insurance with varying levels of copays. If not covered by insurance, the name brands will cost approximately $900 or more per month. Currently a compounded prescription of semaglutide or tirzepatide is available at a lower price range of $190-$400/ month depending on dosing. This is available until the shortage of the brand name products is ended. ** In an effort to best safeguard patients, the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy has instituted sanctions for any prescriber or pharmacy that distributes anything other than FDA-approved semaglutide and tirzepatide from approved compounding pharmacies. The pharmacy and product utilized by Michele Cooper MD currently uses those approved providers.

How has cancer impacted your life or why do you want to personally be part of the St. Tammany UNITED in Pink Campaign?
Living in Southeast Louisiana, we all have at least one friend or family member that has been a victim of cancer, and those are some of the toughest times in a person's life. Walking through Children’s Hospital with the Al Copeland Foundation made the cancer impact on our community hit even harder. So I would like to do what I can do to help, and I love what ACF, as well as St. Tammany Hospital Foundation is doing to help cancer patients in need.
What is your connection with the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation?
I am indirectly involved as a supporter of the Al Copeland Foundation and the ACF, helping the St. Tammany Hospital System. I have been a donor of ACF which has supported St. Tammany Health System in the past. Additionally, having an office in Mandeville, I know several of my team members and clients receive their care at St. Tammany Health System.

Why is cancer screening, education, and prevention important to you and in our community? It is important for everyone to have access to screening, as early detection can save your life.
Why do you think it is important to give back to your community and/or the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation?
I thank God every day for the fact that I can walk, talk, hear, think, and communicate cognitively. I also thank Him for my health and the health of my family. Everything else is extra. But not everyone can say that. Many people are fighting for their lives. Being blessed financially with a growing company, I feel it is my responsibility to give back to my community, and healthcare—specifically helping cancer patients and furthering research—is at the top of my list.

As an operating room nurse at St. Tammany Hospital System, Jerilynn Mayeur is no stranger to hospitals. But when she was diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer in 2020 followed by stage 2 breast cancer later that year and stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in November 2022, she became familiar with a completely different side of medical care.
Devon Dunkin’s youngest was eight years old when she received a diagnosis of stage 3 triple negative breast cancer in 2021. Eighteen rounds of chemo, five weeks of radiation, a double mastectomy and two reconstruction surgeries later, she was officially declared to be in remission in early 2022.
Looking back, Mayeur can see how important it is to keep focus and find purpose in your fight. “Take a deep breath and focus on the day-to-day, especially in the beginning after you are diagnosed,” says Mayeur, who is raising a six-year-old son with her husband of eight years. “A lot of overwhelming information and big words are thrown at you, but take the time to process what you need. Find a medical team that works with you, as you'll become very close to them throughout your treatment plan. I know I must do this for myself and my family. They are the reasons I show up for every appointment, every lab stick and every round of chemo.”

In the case of Dunkin’s story, her wife and three children were key in helping her win the battle. “My family has been my driving force through all of this,” she says. “I knew that I had to show them what it meant to fight and be strong. What they don’t know is that they actually saved me from cancer.” The QHSE Manager for Viking Life Saving Equipment enjoys playing baseball with her kids, cooking, traveling, and trying new foods in her spare time. SURVIVOR STORIES

FRADELLA
CARTER
By Liesel Schmidt
By Liesel Schmidt
“There were many moments of weakness, but I tried to always look for the rainbows at the end of the storm. In the midst of my storms, those rainbows were sometimes hard to see, but knowing that they would be there gave me hope.”
The past four years of Becky Carter’s life have been an emotional rollercoaster. Diagnosed in 2019 with stage 4 follicular lymphoma in the stomach and bone marrow, she was also diagnosed with earlystage breast cancer in 2022. Fortunately, the latter was caught soon enough that surgery and 16 rounds of radiation eradicated the cancer cells, and Carter is now free of breast cancer.
Casey Fradella’s storms came in the summer of 2021, when the wife and mother of three received a diagnosis of breast cancer, resulting in a double mastectomy and four surgeries over the next two years. Now, all cancer cells are gone, and she has enjoyed living cancer-free—but not without the realization that life could be much different. To other women facing the realities of cancer and whatever it may bring, Fradella offers these words: “Have faith and hope. It’s okay to let others take care of you. Reach out to others who have been through it. They can help answer questions and give advice. I love sharing my story and a few of ‘my favorite things’ that helped me through all my surgeries so that other women can draw hope from my experience.” Support and sharing have been an important part of Fradella’s journey, and, having joined the You Night class of 2023, she has found a sisterhood of other women who offer their support and share their stories with a special understanding. “In going to You Night, I have realized that I’m not alone,” Fradella says. “There were “Everyone has their own story, but we many moments of are able to share something that others weakness, but I tried don’t understand.” to always look for the Fradella has been a public-school teacher for 17 years and is also a health coach. Carter is a two-year member of You Night, where she has found other women to inspire her in her journey. “This organization has given me a very new and open perspective on life and learning to not take life and the hand you were dealt so hard and personally,” she notes. “It is a beautiful opportunity to be involved in and has been an amazing experience for learning who I really am outside of a cancer diagnosis.
“What has kept me strong over the past few years have been God and my family,” she goes on. “I always tell my kids, I didn't raise quitters, but you are allowed to step back, take a breath, and have a moment. If all you can give today is a baby step, take it. Baby steps lead to bigger steps, bigger steps lead you toward the goals you have set for yourself. Stay focused, stay positive. ADAM ROHR LPTA - Inpatient Rehab, St. Tammany Health System
How has cancer impacted your life or why do you want to personally be part of the St. Tammany UNITED in Pink Campaign?
In 1998, a former co-worker and dear friend of mine, Tricia Ciccone, had breast cancer but was misdiagnosed due to the fact that she was only 30. A later diagnosis resulted in two surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. Twelve years later, they found a lump in her other breast—at the same time that she was diagnosed with the auto-immune disease scleroderma. This affected all of her organs, further complicating everything. As treatment, she had a bilateral radical mastectomy followed by reconstruction. Because of complications from the chemo causing swelling in her brain and her organs shutting down, she could have died. I was at her bedside at the hospital during this uncertain time. Today, she still has challenges but is alive and well. My grandmother passed away of ovarian cancer in 1997, and in June of this year, my mother was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer following a routine mammogram and biopsy. She had her surgery in July to remove the cancer and questionable lymph nodes. The results came back cancer free and chemotherapy and radiation were not warranted. I want to be part of the St. Tammany UNITED In Pink Campaign to raise awareness about cancer and prevention in hopes that, one day, no one else will have to tell these stories. I will be dedicating my performance at this year’s Bras for a Cause to my friend Trish and my mom, in memory of my grandmother and to all who have survived this deadly disease.
St. TamMANY MEN WEAR PINK
What is your connection with the St. Tammany Health System/ St. Tammany Hospital Foundation?
I have worked at St. Tammany Health System for the past ten years. This will mark my eighth appearance at The Women’s Council of Realtors’ annual Bras for a Cause event representing St. Tammany Health System, the Foundation, and STHS Women’s Pavilion modeling their bras. I also participate in the Foundation’s annual gala. This will be my third year acting in their video advertisement for the event.
Why do you think it is important to give back to your community?
Giving back to the Foundation is essential to aid their continued contributions and commitment in the fight against cancer. I’m blessed to work with these amazing and caring people. It’s been my honor to represent St. Tammany Health System, the Foundation, and STHS Women’s Pavilion over the past ten years. Here’s to many more years fighting the good fight!

During the month of October, St. Tammany Hospital Foundation offers the community an opportunity to unite in support of the work of The St. Tammany Cancer Center — A Campus of Ochsner Medical Center — the Be Well Bus and the STHS Women’s Pavilion through St. Tammany UNITED in Pink, an awareness and fundraising campaign for breast cancer care and — new this year — the importance of early detection for both breast cancer and lung cancer. “Challenging and rewarding.” Two words that could easily be ascribed to Cristin Hand’s work as the director of business development for Bienville Capital Group—but more so to her role as a working mother of two. In a typical work day, she handles client deliverables, events, marketing, and various campaigns; but there is no start or end to the hours she puts in with her boys, raising them to be good men with her husband Jason. “There are days that I feel spread pretty thin, but I push through; and with that comes a feeling of accomplishment,” she says. “I don’t know that there is ever a way to ‘have it all’ as a working parent. There are tradeoffs along the way, but with planning and persistence, I have found a healthy balance.”

Balance is both critical to a healthy home and work life as well as an important example to set for children to see—as is dedication. “I think it’s healthy for kids to see their parents work toward a goal, whatever that may be,” Hand asserts. “If you asked my kids what I do, they would say, ‘She helps people save money for retirement.’ My hope is that I can model a good work ethic and instill healthy financial habits.
“In my work, I’ve learned that, no matter what it is that you ‘do,’ it’s crucial that you try your best and give 100 percent,” she continues. “Things may happen along the way, but as long as you work hard and don’t give up, you will succeed. This applies to so many areas of life, including parenthood.”

“Giving up” is not something in Hand’s vocabulary—and she credits her children for the determination that kept her alive even in the face of cancer. “My kids are my superpower,” she says. “They helped save my life when I was diagnosed with cancer. To say I was blindsided is an understatement. A few days after the diagnosis in 2021, I remember watching as my youngest son went from house-to-house trick or treating for Halloween. It was in that moment that I knew I had a fight ahead of me, and I was ready. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t let it be the last Halloween that I would be there to make this memory with my family.” After a long road of surgery, chemo, and physical therapy, Hand reclaimed the life she had fought so hard to keep, with the family that she loves so deeply. “I am proud of the strength that I found to fight through what seemed like an impossible situation to make it home to my family,” she says. “I gained a new perspective on life, slowing down to truly be present in the moment and to be grateful for every day, every interaction, every memory. My happiest moments aren’t found during the ‘big’ times in life, they are found in the small, quiet times, the genuine interactions that sometimes get overlooked. I have also come to understand the importance of giving people grace. We may not know what difficult situation someone is going through, so be kind and patient with people.” As much as Hand has been through, she hopes that her boys remember her strength and that she “was and always will be their cheerleader.” From her children, she has learned lessons that she will carry with her the rest of her life: “My children have taught me the value of having patience and the importance of showing up for and supporting those that you love, no matter what.” she says. “It’s amazing what you can accomplish with the support of the people you care about. I’m living proof of that.”

LIBRARIAN • FONTAINEBLEAU HIGH SCHOOL Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher? I had THE best English teacher my senior year of high school. She made everything in her class so much fun. Her name was Mrs. Sprinkle. We all learned and laughed so much in that class. I distinctively remember thinking man I would love to have a job where I had as much fun as she has every day. What is your biggest challenge as a teacher? The biggest challenge for me, and I think for a lot of teachers, is time. There is just never quite enough of it. There are so many moving parts in education that people don’t see - paperwork, lesson planning, phone calls, research, grading - and none of that is the actual teaching part of the job. It takes trying to tackle a never ending to do list to do this job well, and there is never enough time.
What do you feel is the biggest reward? The biggest reward, by far, is the relationships that are built. Over the years, I’ve met so many people who mean so much to me - students, their parents, other teachers, administrators, staff. Building those relationships - that community of people with a common goal of student success - THAT is what makes this job so much fun! How do you make learning fun for your students? There’s this book that I read years ago called The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. In it, among other things, he discusses the concept of a head fake

in the classroom, it’s this idea that since sometimes students are reluctant learners, teachers might have to make them think they’re doing something else. For example, when we study complicated literature like Shakespeare, I might have them illustrate one “golden” line, so then they think they’re coloring when they’re actually evaluating the lines BEFORE they color. If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be? It would be to find a career they love because, as they say, if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.

Atin Home Sweetbay Story: Liesel Schmidt // Photos: Summer Davis Photography
When Prentiss and Beverly Smith look at their home, they don’t see what others do. The coastal home boasts an architectural style that sits right at home on the water, complementing the landscape with its use of brick and clapboard siding, its color palette and its wood accents. But for the couple, this 5,000 square-foot house is the keeper of memories that make its name— Sweetbay—all the more apt. “We have spent so many happy times here with friends and family,” says Beverly, who raised three children with her husband, a retired radiologist.

he Smiths moved to Fairhope from Mississippi and built Sweetbay, looking toward the future. “We built this home to grow older in,” Beverly notes. “For that reason, it has a number of features that are handicap accessible. But more than that, this home is the fulfillment of a promise. Our life here at Sweetbay, in Fairhope, is so special because Prentiss always told me that we would retire on the water. I had no idea just how wonderful it would be. He’d told me when we found this property that he would buy it if I would stop buying shoes for a year.”
It would seem that Beverly’s shoe collection would tell the tale of how that bargain went… Nevertheless, Prentiss bought the land, and planning began for the house that later became Sweetbay. Enlisting the services of Clay Adams as architect, Tom Bierster as builder, and Elizabeth Hays and Cathy Pigott as interior decorators, the home came to life and was completed in 2009. The stunning landscape architecture surrounding it was designed by Prentiss and Lissa Faulkner of Faulkner Landscaping. “If we moved away from Sweetbay, we would definitely miss our beautiful yard,” Beverly says. “We’ve spent so much time on our porches, looking out over our yard at the spectacular sunsets. We have so many favorite places in the house, but the front porch has to be one of our most loved spots. It has views of Mobile Bay, and looking out at that water is what we have dreamed of for so long. How can you possibly replace memories like that?”

“This is our dream home. We feel so blessed to live here and look forward to spending the rest of our lives living here and making more memories.”
The four bedroom, four and a half bath home sits on three levels. On the main floor, the open plan makes the living spaces seem even more spacious, flowing from one room to the next, with high, pitched ceilings lined with planking, and stained wood accent beams that mirror the color and finish of the old heart pine hardwood flooring. “What inspires us the most about this house is how livable it is and how it flows,” Beverly observes.“There are no bottlenecks, and there are no areas that feel stuffy.”

Being the consummate hosts and avid cooks that they are, the Smiths can frequently be found in their kitchen—which, consequently, also affords magnificent views of Mobile Bay. “The kitchen is so important to us, because our whole family loves to cook,” says Beverly, including in that reference the couple’s three children, five grandchildren, and three sets of in-laws. A run of custom cabinetry whose color hovers somewhere between gray and blue sits against the back wall of the kitchen, broken at midpoint by a large window. Honed black granite tops the lower run of cabinetry as well as the massive center island, which offers additional seating and prep space. Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances complete the space and provide a high-grade cooking experience for the family. OCTOBER 2023

SOCIAL LIVING
Aside from the views, one of the most noticeable features of Sweetbay are its eclectic interior, which boasts a number of decorative pieces that are, in fact, antique architectural pieces that the Smiths have collected over the years. Fittingly, the color palette leans toward the coastal hues of greens and blues, used artfully in a way that avoids being thematic. The home also gives a gallery feel with their ever-growing art collection—most of which are from regional and local artists. With their location on the water, it is only natural that the master suite boasts a fabulous view of the Mobile Bay. Making the space even more relaxing, the large master bath features Alabama marble, granite flooring, a travertine walk-in shower, massive freestanding tub, and spacious closets. “This is our dream home,” says Beverly. “We feel so blessed to live here and look forward to spending the rest of our lives living here and making more memories.”

BRIDE
l a u r a a S S & Story by Liesel Schmidt
When Sara Huggins and Saul Rubio first met over dinner, it wasn’t quite the way you’d expect—Saul was the owner of a restaurant where Sara would often come for dinner on her days off from working as a nurse, and the young entrepreneur made a point of stopping at her table to talk to her. Spark lit, Saul finally asked her on a date, and the two spent what would be the first of many nights out together. OCTOBER 2023

even years of dating lit that spark to a flame, but the engagement also happened in a way quite unique to the couple. “In May of 2022, we had lunch at La Petite Grocery after a fun night at the Pelicans game, and one of our friends sent a bottle of champagne to the table for us,” Sara recalls. “I asked Saul if he was going to pick a date to get married, and he said September 10th. Then I asked him who he would want to invite, and we started writing down the guest list. Then in late August, our friends Lane and Tasha Daniel hosted our engagement party and Saul got down on one knee to give me the ring! It was such a happy evening, and he picked the most beautiful ring from Lee Michaels with his sister, Leticia.”

That ring was joined by another on September 10, 2022, when Sara walked down the aisle at Herencia de Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The dress she wore was as breathtaking as the setting: a handmade Galia Lahav dress from Unbridaled in New Orleans. “It was white with three-dimensional flowers sewn on and a train that reached the first row of guests, finished with a veil that reached past that with the same flowers,” Sara describes. “I felt the most beautiful I ever have in my life.”
With 205 of their closest friends and family bearing witness, Sara and Saul exchanged vows and were pronounced married. Joining their guests for a reception of delicious Mexican fare that included melt-in-your-mouth tender short ribs simmered in a red mole sauce with fresh tortillas served to every table, the newlyweds basked in the happy glow of wedded bliss before cutting into a three-tiered lemon poppyseed cake covered in vanilla fondant and adorned with figs. “It was very simple but elegant and heavenly,” says Sara.

As memorable as the location was, there were a few memorable moments that had nothing to do with the scenery. “So many funny things happened,” Sara says. “Everyone there took a bath in either champagne or tequila, and many guests drank tequila from Saul's shoes or mine! Our wedding was so unique because it was a destination wedding in my husband’s native country, and we had the most amazing group of people attend. I have never seen more beautiful and fun-loving people in one place, before or since.”
