Our story at Blue Equine, LLC, Fitness and Rehabilitation Center, starts with our daughter, Elle, an aspiring young athlete, and her love for horses. At just 5 years old, Elle began riding. From that moment on, not only did her passion and love for the sport grow, but her love for horses.

ur purchase of the 200-acre plot of land where Blue Equine, LLC, now resides was, at the outset, envisioned to be a beautiful equine property that would allow Elle to train, nurture, and shelter her equine athletes. As you can imagine, developing this heavily wooded 200 acres proved to be no easy feat. Creating barns, pastures, storage facilities, outdoor arenas, and a living area was a huge undertaking that took far longer than expected.
Due to an unexpected traumatic and impactful event, this vision of a small-scale, personal equine property transformed. One of our champion barrel racing horses suffered an injury that, for many horses, would be considered career-ending. The veterinarian advised us that equine therapy would be the only chance of rehabilitation for our horse. However, residing in Louisiana, we realized that this type of therapy was not offered anywhere on the Gulf Coast. Wanting only the best quality of life and a safe recovery for our injured horse, we spared no expense. It became obvious that the Gulf Coast desperately needed a facility that could provide fitness training, rehabilitation services, and boarding for extended treatment. After the purchase of professional training equipment, we
decided to share this extraordinary initiative, with our community. With this goal in mind, we expanded our property with the addition of 300 acres of land, riding trails, and art installations. Currently, we are building a 275-foot by 150-foot covered arena and attached therapy center with a 30-stall barn. Since the genesis of Blue Equine, LLC, my partnership with Debbie Martin has been and continues to be integral to the success of this endeavor. Debbie has procured a lifetime of experience with horses and has developed professional relationships with some of the best in the business. We are constantly adding carefully chosen and well-trained staff to our team. It's with pride that we deliver the best service to you and your horses, and hope to provide an experience like none other available in the Southeast. How do you handle work-life balance?
There have only been short wisps of time in my life where I thought I was “balancing” everything well. In my opinion, when one does not have children, climbing the ladder in business and creating their own success is completely at their discretion, a reflection of how much time and effort they are willing to place in that part of their life. That dynamic changes considerably once there are children to consider. This is often the time when women fall out of the climb and create their own glass ceiling. It’s a choice every mother must make, and I respect every woman’s decision but molding a new life is a very important role to play and deserves the consideration. Being a plastic surgeon in solo practice my job never ended on Friday or at 5pm, so there weren’t a lot of changes I could make to improve the situation. I embraced the saying “It takes a village to raise a child,” and there have been many amazing people who have helped me to raise my girls. I could not have done it without them. Balance is an illusion and a misnomer. It really comes down to trust. Do you trust other people to help you, and do they deserve the trust you've given them? During those long days of residency, fellowship, and starting my private practice, the peace of mind in knowing someone was with my children and that they were well cared for was what allowed me to grow my practice and provide excellent care to my patients. Still, I can honestly say I never felt like things were balanced—I felt like they were manageable. At times of crisis on any front, that illusion or feeling slipped away very quickly.

What do you want to achieve next? Growing Blue Equine Fitness and Rehabilitation into a well-recognized, -trusted, and -respected facility has been and continues to be my most pressing project. This endeavor requires large facilities and knowledgeable, hardworking staff, along with alliances across all fields of equine rehabilitation. Debbie Martin is my right hand in this project. She easily works in excess of 12-hour days and manages every facet of the practice. Anyone who has ever started their own business knows this kind of commitment is critical to its success, and anything less is often a harbinger of failure. This company exists because I believe in Debbie delivering on our mission. On a personal level, I want the land to look and feel a certain way. I have sculptures throughout the 200-acre property and have been working with a landscaping architect to create a very manicured experience with art education and exposure as one travels around the property by horse, on foot, or by ATV. Debbie couldn't care less about this part of it, but this is my passion. I love nature, and I love art.
What advice would you give to someone starting their own business? You must be passionate about what you are doing, because it will consume your every waking minute. During the process, you must also stop repeatedly to evaluate how you can improve your product. Finding people who are equally hardworking and passionate is difficult, and it is rare to find someone willing to work above and beyond to create your vision and actually share in that vision. Value those people—God didn’t make many of them.
What mantra do you live by? If you want to achieve greatness, stop asking for permission. People who tell me that I can’t do something just fuel my passion to prove them wrong. As Salvador Dali said, “No great masterpiece was ever created by a lazy artist.” You must put the time in. When you have a company running well, it looks effortless and easy. That is the part people want, but there are sacrifices that must be made to get there and be a success.

Learn that Failure is Okay.
with imperfection. Mistakes keep us grounded. Plus, when we share our errors with others, they gain more respect for you and your transparency.
Jumping into entrepreneurship can be terrifying. Mistakes will be made, but mistakes are only true failures if you don’t learn from them. It’s okay to fail if you pick yourself back up and gather a game plan to move forward.
Be Tough, but Humble.
In any profession, when a woman takes a leadership role, she can often be labeled as bossy or rude. It’s a hurdle any professional woman must face. Remain vigilant and assertive— you know what you want and need! Developing a thick skin is necessary to conduct business, but always make sure to remain approachable in the process.
Be a Teammate.
No matter if you have business partners or employees, do your part and know that you are part of a team. No job is too small or too big even for the busiest of business owners. Think: “Does the shop need to be swept? Where’s the broom?” Supporting your people will make them support you even more.
Stay Focused on the Task at Hand.
The juggling of business ownership and family time can be exhausting. It is important to focus on what is in front of you—whether that’s a heaping pile of paperwork or lunch boxes that need to be packed. Distractions are your worst enemy and we all know there are plenty throughout the day! Creating a daily task list can help.
Keep Learning.
Even if you’re a master at your trade, there’s always room to learn and improve. There are many ways to keep on learning in all forms of business: take a continuing education class, surround yourself with likeminded peers, enlist a board of directors, go for that next certification, or find a mentor. Setting goals of what you’d like to accomplish isn’t a bad idea either.
Ask for Help.
Drowning in inventory counting? Your DIY website isn’t going as planned? It’s okay to raise your hand and ask for help! Your time is one of the most valuable parts of your business. Learn to delegate tasks and ask for assistance when needed. While we want to do it all, sometimes we can’t.
Find a Focus.
Often, businesses can fail when there’s no true focus. Define your business, your customer base, and whoever else you want to reach. Make your services and offerings clear, concise, and accessible to potential and existing clients.
Know Your Personal Brand.
While developing your business brand, don’t forget to develop your personal brand as well. A strong personal brand allows others to depend on you for more than just your business’ offerings—they’ll want to know your thoughts and ideas.
Say No When You Want.
Lift Others Up.
Find ways to encourage your employees and business partners. If they’re doing an incredible job, let them know it! A simple thank you and compliment is sometimes the encouragement a person needs to continue doing their best. You will find that listening and being empathetic to your peers will attract the most genuine of people.
As a woman entrepreneur, it is important to learn when to say no. If the offer doesn’t fit, if the request causes more trouble than it’s worth, if a collaboration limits your time or business, say no. The more you choose to say no when needed, the easier it gets. And the fear of coming across as rude will fade too.
Believe in Your Abilities and Business.
Confidence is the largest key to success as a woman entrepreneur. Believe in your abilities, your brand, and your business. The more confidence you build in yourself, the less desire you will have to seek others’ validation. This allows you to stay focused and determined to grow your business. You’ve got this.
Take Responsibility.
Absolutely no one is perfect. If you make a mistake, own it. As the first tip mentions, learn from your mistakes and be okay WE SOCIAL 2022 | 23

WE: What book impacted you most? Erica D. Williams: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It inspired me to be the kind of lawyer that would be a voice for the voiceless and counsel with compassion.
s an independently practicing attorney, Erica D. Williams faced the same uncertainty in 2020 that all small business owners did, but she thrived despite the challenges and kept on serving her clients. With more than 20 years of experience, Williams has seen the way women in the profession are often underestimated, and she’s proud of the success she’s had. “According to the American Bar Association, statistics show that only 37 percent of women in the United States are lawyers,” she says. “Women are the minority in my line of work. Still, even through the pandemic, my clients could rely on me to advocate for them in these uncertain times. I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens in our great community.”
WE: What is your spirit animal or insect? EDW: The butterfly. Though their beautiful wings are impressive, the true beauty is in their growth. Every butterfly has a life cycle. My cocoon was my village—my friends, family, and community pouring into me to compel my growth. And now, my wings reflect that labor.
Deeply inspired by suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony to be an advocate, Williams tries to follow her example. “She was an amazing and fearless spokesperson during a time when women were looked at as unequal to their male counterparts,” she says. “I have taken her ideology and applied it to my craft.”

Years into her career, there is advice she would offer to a younger version of herself as she started on her career path: “No matter what, stand by your beliefs and values. Your reputation is paramount to your success in the industry.” As a member of the NorthShore community, Whitehead loves to give back. “I love supporting local non-profits. After the 2016 flood—which affected my parents, both brothers, my aunt, and countless friends who all lived in Denham Springs—I learned that it was the local people and charities that were there to help the most. orking alongside her two daughters, Kiki & Lolli co-owner Connie Boudreaux has accomplished something many mothers only dream about: running their own company, with their girls as partners. For Boudreaux, this is an incredible point of pride. “I am blessed to be able to work sideby-side with my two daughters,” she says. “Watching them grow in the business world is one of my proudest moments.” As much of an inspiration as she tries to be to her own daughters and those around her, Boudreaux was inspired by her own mother. “My mom is my biggest inspiration in life,” she explains. “She was one of the strongest women ever. No matter what life threw at her, she always persevered. One of my favorite quotes that she would always say was, ‘No matter how dark today is, the sun will always come out tomorrow.’” Regardless of the challenges she faces as a small business owner, Boudreaux finds motivation in the little things to keep her head high. “The look of glee on children’s faces—especially the teens—when they love an outfit makes it all worth it, even when things seem tough,” she says. To her younger self—and all young people—she would offer this bit of wisdom: “Always know and always remember your own self-worth, because at the end of the day, you are your own worst critic.”
Kristen Callahan WE: What about your mother inspires you the most? Kristen Callahan: What inspires me most about my mother is her selfless heart. She is always the first person to jump to action when anyone needs help, whether she knows them or not. She never strays away from her giving spirit, no matter what is going on within her own life. WE: Growing up what did you see as your mother’s strength? KC: I was lucky enough to see so many different strengths through my mom’s actions and words. She has always been fiercely loyal, something I have always tried to instill in myself in my life and my relationships. There are only so many minutes in a day. And as a female entrepreneur, it may seem like there’s never enough. Finding a balance at home and at work is vital for your business, but more importantly for your mental health. Here are some tips on reaching that perfect balance of enjoying life and your work:

ANALYZE YOUR SCHEDULE Life is everchanging by the week and sometimes by the day. Your schedule that worked last year may not be best for this year. Evaluate your weekly, monthly, and quarterly schedules to see what’s working and what will work for the here and now. SET BOUNDARIES Working around the clock isn’t healthy for anyone. Establish clear boundaries of when you should be working and when you should unplug. Clarifying your priorities for each part of the day also helps to keep you on track. HAVE REAL EXPECTATIONS While we want to be natural phenomenons, it’s unhealthy to attempt to always do it all. If you’re finding yourself on the verge of burnout, first breathe, then try to adjust your expectations of what you need to accomplish each day. IMPLEMENT HEALTHY PRACTICES Skipping meals or stress eating can easily happen when the busyness of the day kicks in. Have a plan for healthy snacks and meals both day and night, and schedule time for exercise outdoors. Your mental and physical health is of the utmost importance to your quality of life. QUIET DISTRACTIONS Whether it’s phone calls or scrolling on your phone that takes time away from your focus. Learn to remove distractions and (again) set boundaries on what you’d like to accomplish. You will find that it takes less time to complete a task when distractions are at bay.
ACCEPT HELP Outsource items on your to-do list that take up a ton of time, especially if you don’t enjoy doing them. Maybe hire a housekeeper, enlist a meal kit service or prepared meals, and turn to your partner for more support at home. And always delegate specific tasks at work to responsible employees. STICK WITH THE PLAN Treat your work life like a normal 9-to-5 job with a holiday schedule. While that’s easier said than done, you’ll be glad you did. Time unplugged and spent with family and friends recharges and refreshes your mental and emotional wellbeing. Although it’s tempting to pull long hours and push yourself to further your company, it’s best to stay with a plan that works well for everyone, especially yourself. TAKE “ME” TIME There’s a reason you put your oxygen mask on first in a state of emergency on an airplane. You must keep breathing to assist others. The same goes for your family, friendships, and business. You have to take care of yourself! Choose a hobby, outing or activity that brings you joy and schedule that in. I feel like a warrior, and I am very proud of myself.” No matter the case, Burns fights the good fight for her clients. “Every day, people come to me to fight for them,” she says. “The fact that they come to me, instead of anyone else, is an enormous compliment and honor.” The daughter of an ambitious woman, Burns is deeply inspired by her mother. “My mom put herself through law school while raising three babies on her own,” Burns says. “She’s a fighter. fter buying her husband out of the business, Connie Thomas made a name for herself in the mobile home industry and took her company, Victory Home Center, to great success as one of the nation’s largest single-lot factory-built housing retailers. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Thomas takes a great deal of pride in her accomplishments. “I’m incredibly proud that I did it,” she says. “I took the risk of losing everything and made it to the top as the only single woman owner of a mobile home retail dealership in the state of Louisiana.” Naturally, Thomas is inspired by other strong females who have overcome a great deal of adversity and stood toe-to-toe with naysayers. “Penny Chenery, owner of the 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, was told she had picked the wrong horse,” Thomas notes. “They all were against her, but she knew what she knew. She did it her way. I find that so encouraging, and that is what I’m trying to do in my own life.” As difficult as the industry can be at times, Thomas is still passionate about her work. “I put people in new homes. It's very inspiring,” she says. To her younger self, Thomas would offer these words of wisdom: “Absolutely be willing to be okay with it, if it does not work out or if you do not succeed. That’s not failure! Failure is not going for it! You must be willing to do whatever it takes, with the best attitude. Be patient. Do what no one else is doing. Be different and stand out. And always be humble and kind.”
WE: What about your mother inspires you the most? Angel Thomas: My mother inspires me in many ways, but the biggest way is her drive, determination and how big her heart is. No matter the situation I know I can count on her for anything. She is such a blessing to others without even realizing sometimes. She has overcome some tough obstacles that have only made her stronger and done it with grace and given all her glory to God. She is a "what you see is what you get" type of person and has taught me being honest is most important. She has always shown me no dream is too big and with hard work anything can be accomplished. WE: Growing up what did you see as your mother’s strength? AT: Growing up I saw my mother's strength as nurturing and caring she has been my best friend through everything and always will be. F
or anyone who has found themselves in financial crisis and in need of assistance for housing or improvements on an existing house, Habitat for Humanity has offered a helping hand and a welcome home. The number of people the organization has helped since its birth in Americus, Georgia, has been incredible—more than 39 million in 45 years. In 2021, they helped more than 4.2 million people, and an additional 8.5 million gained the potential to improve their housing conditions through training and support. For people like Jennifer Messina, continuing the mission of this noble organization is a passion that drives them, utilizing their skills to touch more lives in their community and change the world, one person and one home at a time. “There was a period of time during my childhood that my family was in extreme financial troubles,” recalls Messina, 44 | WE SOCIAL 2022
who acts as Vice President of Development at Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West. “I can remember the pain of the struggles that we went through, the moments of insecurity of food and shelter, the uncertainty of what was going to happen next. Thankfully, we had an extremely supportive family that was able to assist us in our greatest time of need. Fast forward to my adulthood, I wanted nothing more than to help others who were also in need. To see the lives of families literally change before your eyes is the most impactful and rewarding experience ever!” Previously working as an event planner for a major cruise line, Messina realized she wanted more fulfilling work. “I began spending a lot of time with the cruise line’s community outreach efforts in South Miami and found myself wanting more and to do more,” she says. “I had just
moved back to Mandeville and attended a kickoff event for the Habitat STW Women Build project. I was so motivated by the people in the room, the homebuyers, and the change I could see that Habitat STW was making in our community. They had a volunteer coordinator staff position available, and I went for it.” More than twelve years later, Messina has risen the ranks of the organization. “If I were to narrow down what I do, I manage the operations of the ReStore—our retail store—as well as oversee all fundraising and marketing efforts,” she says. “I am responsible for approximately half of our staff. I’m also empowered to continue to educate the community on Habitat STW and our mission.” The mission is, of course, what drives her, and Messina sees the invaluable role that Habitat STW plays in the local community. “When you look at the dynamics of our parish, you see so many amazing components that make St. Tammany the fabulous place that it is to live in,” says Messina, who lives in Mandeville with her husband and daughter. “If you look a bit deeper, you will see that there are still many pockets of poverty. Habitat STW serves what I call the hourly waged employee that work in our hospitals, schools, restaurants, stores…They are a huge part of what makes our community thrive, yet they do not earn enough income to be able to afford to live here. There is still food insecurity, a major mental health crisis, and an affordable housing shortage that does indeed exist here, and there are many nonprofits including Habitat STW that have risen to the challenge to help address those needs.”

Over the course of her time at Habitat STW, great strides have been made in affecting community change. “I am so proud of the amazing team that we have at Habitat STW,” she says. “Due to the efforts of our team, the amazing support of our community, and the dedication of our homebuyers, we are able to remain sustainable at building and selling ten new homes per year.” Messina’s own work is also leaving a mark. “I am extremely dedicated to our community,” she says. “My days are spent helping others to find a way to achieve their goals, whether those are big dreams or small offerings of advice. I am only able to foster change by engaging our community to enable progress, which enhances overall compassion and trust. I am a connector by nature and have found a niche at helping others to find the resources they need to achieve their goals.” In addition to her role at Habitat STW, Messina is also Chairperson at Leadership St. Tammany. “I am a graduate of the Leadership St. Tammany Class of 2012—the best class that year…other LST grads will get that humor—and I have such passion for the information that is provided through the Leadership St. Tammany program.,” she says. “I wanted to do whatever I could to help facilitate the continued success of the program and became the Chairperson in June 2019.” She also serves on the St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce Board as well as the New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute Board. “My goal is to remain as involved as I can to continue the sharing of ideas and resources for others,” Messina says. “We are stronger together, and if there is an opportunity to promote collaboration and synergy, I want to be there.” WE SOCIAL 2022 | 45

s an OB/GYN, Dr. Jaime Edwards sees both the joys and heartaches that come with womanhood, seeing patients through the everyday as well as the momentous. On staff at North Oaks Medical Center for a decade, she has had the opportunity to see Magnolia OB/GYN grow and develop into a thriving practice. Naturally, the stresses of work can get to any physician, but Edwards remains passionate about her work. “A normal day of work for me can be a life-changing event for my patients,” says Edwards, who served as past OB chair and currently serves as chair of the Network Operations Council for North Oaks Physician Group. “It’s important for me to bring my best to the women under my care.” As many women as have influenced Edwards over the course of her career, her mother remains the greatest. “She’s worked hard her whole life,” Edwards says. “She sacrificed so much just to ensure that I had the best education and could follow my dreams.” Living along the NorthShore, Edwards loves the culture of the community. “The members of our community go out of their way to support local businesses as well as one another,” she says. “I am an associate member of Junior Auxiliary of Hammond (now JA of Tangipahoa). I love upcycling and restoring anything vintage from glassware to furniture. Also, boy mom here. I am the proud mother of two boys, Bishop, my 6 year old and my 2 year old Duke, both Cedarwood Snappers! They keep me on my toes. Lately, a lot of my mid-century treasures displayed on my mantle and Danish hutch are now mixed in with Star Wars Legos and Hotwheel cars, but I actually don’t mind the eclectic combo. It just shows that boy life is all around me.

I also love meeting other female entrepreneurs and making new relationships with them. hile Taylor Alfonso may have much to take pride in as the owner of successful women’s clothier Stella & Grace Boutique, her greatest sense of achievement comes from her children. “Their happiness is what my own happiness is based upon, and being their mother will always be the most important thing I have done and will ever do,” she says. Inspired by her own mother, Alfonso lives by the example that she set. “My mother is the reason I am the woman I am today,” she says. “She is the strongest, most generous person I have ever known. She is my sounding board in all of the decisions I make and the person I strive every day to become. She is my biggest fan, and I hope to be half the mother she is.” To her younger self, Alfonso would advise self-confidence. “I would tell myself to own my own strength,” she says. “I’ve always underestimated myself. Having children and the struggles I faced during that process made me become a force, but it was always inside—I just needed to not be afraid and trust myself.” As a business owner, Alfonso finds daily inspiration in her work. “I love my store and what it represents to me,” she says. “I opened this store when I needed it the most. Seeing people leave happy and smiling makes every day new and fun, and this store will always inspire me to be a better woman.”

arning her undergraduate at the University of New Orleans and her graduate degree at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Dr. Susan Ovella, MD, subsequently served as chief resident at LSU before becoming board-certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics. Currently in practice at Our Lady of the Lake Physician Group Covington, Ovella is passionate about her patients and overseeing care through all stages of life, from childhood to adulthood. As a doctor, Ovella has many accomplishments upon which she can look with pride, but she considers her first eight years, during which she worked in private practice and balanced raising a young family, to be one of her greatest achievements. As a strong woman and a mother herself, Dr. Ovella considers her own mother to be one of her greatest influencers. “She is independent, fearless, and taught me to always stand up for what is right,” Dr. Ovella notes. Working in such high stress, Dr. Ovella can carry the weight of the world on her shoulders. But to her younger self, she would offer this sage advice: “Worry less. s a senior financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, Shelley Hoddinott Richardson is used to managing a lot of details and balancing many facets of someone’s financial future. “When I was younger, I told my dad that I wanted to help people,” she says. “Now I am blessed to be able to help people financially every day, and that is something that keeps me passionate about my work.” Being a mom as well, she’s had to learn the art of juggling all the aspects of her life. “My greatest accomplishment is being able to successfully manage being a businesswoman and being a mother of two beautiful girls,” she says. “The two in and of themselves can be very challenging at times. But they can be equally rewarding.” Deeply inspired by the late Princess Diana, Hoddinott Richardson admires the beloved icon for many reasons. “Princess Di utilized her power to help others and wasn’t afraid to bend the rules when it came to being a great mother,” she notes. To her younger self, Hoddinott Richardson, would simply offer this pearl of hard-won wisdom: “Be bold! Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Living in the NorthShore community, Hoddinott Richardson celebrates the way it comes together in service of others. “This community is full of selfless people,” she says. “One organization that stands out to me the most is New Heights Therapy Center in Covington. So much of their work goes unnoticed, and they deserve recognition.”

fter the challenges of four years of medical school, one year in internal medicine, and three years of residency in dermatology, the culmination of all her hard work came with the news that Dr. Olivia Gioe passed the board exam. Now, she is also a member of the Regional Networking Committee of Women's Dermatologic Society, a national organization that provides mentorship and assists dermatologists in contributing to their specialty and their communities. Inspired by her patients as well as her staff, Dr. Gioe continues to grow as a physician, even with her years of experience. “They keep me motivated to continue to better myself and keep learning,” she says. “Dermatology itself also inspires me because it is a visual field, which was one of the reasons I chose this specialty. I love the fact that patients can actually see progress and change when a rash or skin cancer gets treated.” Looking back, there are some things she wishes she had known when she was younger. “I would advise my younger self to worry less and enjoy the journey,” she says. “As my dad always says, ‘You are having fun, you just don't know it yet.’ In hindsight, he is absolutely right. Even though my medical training was stressful, it was still tons of fun and full of positive memories.” As a member of the NorthShore community, she loves the family feel it offers. “It’s incredibly welcoming,” she says. “It makes me feel like part of a family.” WE SOCIAL 2022 | 63

A bird also creates a nest and nurtures her babies, and I am very nurturing and loving with the people I love—especially my children. WE: What are your favorite hobbies? TP: My favorite hobbies recently include being part of the small book club my sisters and I formed together. We read, and then we talk about the book together. WE: What book impacted you most? TP: The 5 Love Languages, by Gary Chapman. I was enlightened and learned that everyone gives love and receives love differently. I discovered different ways to fill up my loved ones love tanks and found what I needed to fill mine. It’s important to know what we all need from each other and how to comfort one another. I believe that we all need love to thrive.

ursuing a long-held dream to start a business with her siblings, Tori Pasentine has been relentless in her dedication to seeing that dream through to fruition, and the result is everything she could have imagined. “After many years of individually learning, running previous businesses, planning, working hard and gaining experience, it has finally happened, and I couldn’t be prouder,” says Pasentine. With a grand opening in Spring of 2022, Royal Retreat Day Spa in Mandeville will offer a luxury experience with massage, aesthetics, and other spa services in a beautifully designed and masterfully constructed facility. As hard as the road has been at some points, Pasentine continues to find the inspiration she needs to stay the course. “I love the sense of accomplishment that comes with being able to see our innovations come to reality,” she says. “Creating a business plan and gathering a good team, searching for the best resources, and sourcing everyone’s ideas and creativity to create a luxurious and tranquil day spa for my community is a very rewarding feeling.” Pasentine’s mother has also been a great inspiration, an example of determination in tough times. “My mother is the strongest and most hardworking woman I know,” says Pasentine. “She had five children and sacrificed so much to raise us on her own and prepared us to be who we are destined to be. Growing up, I watched her work and helped her run her businesses. I witnessed her working hard while she selflessly nurtured and offered help to her family. I was able to see her best days and her toughest days, and no matter how hard things got, she persevered and pushed through.”

s the co-owner and co-founder of 1 Percent Lists, Kelly Clayton oversees the work of a number of local licensed real estate agents, serving as the managing broker of the home office located in Covington in addition to helping her 21 franchisees open their doors and streamline their back-office operations.
A real estate agent for 11 years, Clayton has been a broker for the past five, and her passion for working with agents is a driving force in creating the company with her husband. “I love being able to help our agents and franchisees realize their potential and even surprise themselves,” she says. “It's also a wonderful feeling being able to be a part of our clients most important financial decision and helping them make the best decision for themselves and their family. My husband and I created 1 Percent Lists because we felt there was a need for a full-service real estate brokerage that allowed the sellers to keep more of their hard-earned equity once they sold their property.”
For Clayton, it was the entrepreneurial opportunities that drew her to the real estate industry itself. “What first drew me was the fact that it allowed me flexibility in a work schedule while also being my own boss as an independent contractor,” she says. “However, I quickly learned that the workday in this profession is not your typical 9 to 5 but from rather sun-up to well past sun-down, as we need to be readily available and accessible to our clients when they are available, which is usually after a typical workday ends.” Clearly, Clayton is passionate about her career - and furthering that of future generations. s a full-time oncologist and a mother, Dr. Genevieve Maronge has had to learn the art of work/ life balance—and take one day at a time. “Both are important parts of my life, and I strive to give both 100 percent,” she says. “It takes effort, prayer, and focus.” Throughout her life, Maronge has been inspired by strong female athletes. “Early in my life, my female high school coaches had a positive impact on me and were wonderful examples of strong women,” she says. “Subsequently, I have been very inspired by the story of Joan Benoit, who was the first women’s Olympic marathon champion. I felt so touched listening to her daughter’s interview about Joan’s life story during one of my own long runs.” In her work, she finds inspiration in her patients. “As an oncologist, I get to witness all aspects of the human condition—both the lows and the highs—and how resilient humans are,” she notes. “It’s a true privilege to be a part of their lives and journey. They inspire me to value my health and give them my all as their physician.” To her younger self, she would offer these words: “Give yourself a break—perfection is not the goal. And be confident!” As a resident of the NorthShore and a physician at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Maronge loves being engaged with the community. “I’ve seen firsthand the lengths Mary Bird Perkins goes to for individuals in need,” she says. “I love being part of that.”

It’s a known fact that your surroundings greatly affect your productivity and stress levels. If
the papers are beginning to pile up, now may be the time to tackle organizing and cleaning
your workspace for the better. While it may be a daunting task, there’s no doubt that you will breathe deeper and feel more revived in your newly organized environment.

CLEAR THE PILES.
That stack of receipts, mail, and invoices can grow rather quickly without a filing system. To get on track, create three piles of items to pitch, shred, or file. Clear the trash and shredded documents then file those important papers away.
RECYCLE, DONATE AND TRASH.
Office and workspaces tend to collect random objects—jackets and sweaters from chilly days, unused file racks, too many staplers, items you forgot to return, pens that you know are dry. Focus on visible items on tabletops and open shelves. Box up the recyclables and donatable items then chunk the rest.
ORGANIZE CABINETS AND DRAWERS.
Sure, clients and customers can’t see inside the cabinets of your space, but you can! Organize cabinets and drawers to house similar items. Place items that are used together in the same drawers and cabinets to also create a more efficient work area.
SORT SUPPLIES.
Paper products, cleaning items and bathroom supplies should all have homes. Keeping supplies near the areas that each are needed lessens confusion and makes for a functional environment. For example, receipt rolls near the cash wrap and paper towels in the bathroom cabinet.
DESKTOP CLEAN UP.
A clean slate also means your computer desktop might need a straightening up. Are unnamed files taking up space? Create desktop folders for the day-to-day necessities with item file names to match. Finding an image or document will be much easier and your desktop will be a calmer space to navigate.
TACKLE YOUR INBOX.
Is your inbox storage bursting at the seams? Take the time to delete, delete, delete. It’s amazing how many emails can go. For the ones you need to store, create color-coded archive folders for quick access, and go ahead and download those files that you know you’ll need.
SCREEN CLEAN.
Is that a speck on those photos or a splatter from yesterday’s coffee? Yeah, computer monitors take a hit. Use a gentle microfiber towel to wipe away the fingerprints and dust. Sanitize small technology like your phone, card reader and iPad daily.
APPLY THE ONE TOUCH RULE.
To keep your newly organized space, apply the one-touch rule. Whenever you touch an object to use it, put it back in its respective spot when you’re done. And when you receive a dreaded piece of paper, file it as soon as you receive it. You’ll be surprised how clean your space will stay. Ah, now doesn’t that feel wonderful! WE SOCIAL 2022 | 73

WE: What woman has been your biggest inspiration, and why? SD: My grandmother has been my biggest inspiration in life. She was smart, strong and, most importantly, never gave up. The one thing she taught me is that you can accomplish anything you work hard for as long as you do not give up. She was an extremely positive influence on my life. WE: What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself that would have been helpful on your path? SD: My advice to a younger version of myself would be to work hard, always stay positive despite the challenges that arise, learn as much as you can along the way, and never give up. he CEO of Slidell Memorial Hospital, Sandy Badinger is a woman who must keep many plates spinning in the air, and the pandemic only added more responsibility to her already considerable load. Still, she rose to the challenge and kept the hospital running smoothly. “One of the things that I am most proud of in my career is leading the hospital team during unprecedented times in healthcare, the COVID-19 pandemic,” she says. “It was extremely challenging, but the healthcare teams in Slidell at Slidell Memorial and Ochsner stepped up and gave the very best care for our patients. The hospital systems during the height of the pandemic were extremely overwhelmed, but our teams pulled together as we continued to accept transferred patients that needed hospitalization by increasing capacity. Our teams worked tirelessly to take care of our community.” A passionate advocate of patient care, Badinger is inspired every day to help others through her work. “In healthcare, knowing that we impact lives every day inspires me to always work hard and do my very best for our patients,” she says. “I am so blessed to be part of saving and changing lives with a great team of healthcare professionals.” Additionally, Badinger is involved with initiatives for mental and physical health, such as Healthier NorthShore and Safe Haven, as well as programs within the hospitals that bring care into the community to help provide better access to care.

Women Who Support Other Women Always Win

he days of job scarcity are over. While there was a time when competition was necessary among women, that’s not really the case as woman-owned businesses continue to bloom. Owning nearly half of all businesses in the US, women are learning that collaboration has more benefits than competition.
A Harvard Business Review 2019 study found that women who have a strong and close group of female peers are more likely to get promotions, receive higher pay and hold executive positions. It makes sense. As women rise above the systemic and cultural challenges, they need support. Support that is best provided by another woman who has been through it. It’s that sharing of experiences that helps the girls’ club elevate. Building your girls’ club is key. How do you start? By making meaningful connections with other women entrepreneurs. That’s done by sharing your own experiences, finding common interests and goals, and offering your own talents at the table. People want to work with people they know and like which means taking stiff business dialogue out of the equation and speaking on a heartfelt level. Example: 78 | WE SOCIAL 2022
get to know about your connection’s family, her passions, and her hopes of what’s to come. Let her be heard. That is when strong bonds are formed. Like any other relationship, it will need nurturing. Check in, ask for advice, and reach out to help however you can. If an opportunity arises that you think someone in your group would be the perfect fit for, share it. Also, never forget to collaborate in personal and business projects. Having a pop-up event or seminar? Ask other businesses to join in. The more the merrier when it comes to girls’ club. From aesthetics and beauty professionals to bakers and veterinarians, everyone has something to offer and impart. Truly, it’s fun to raise fellow women entrepreneurs up. If you are impressed with a woman-owned business, let the world know! Tell others to check it out. Always be an ambassador and cheerleader for your friends’ companies no matter where you are, but especially online. There’s no better e-hug than tagging someone in a positive review. You can congratulate successes
with a handwritten note, tag your purchases from your favorite local stores on social media, share their exciting news and updates, and always comment or like their posts. As you know, it’s the little things that make a huge impact. That includes giving recommendations for similar businesses when your schedule may be full, or your inventory doesn’t fit a need. Respect always grows for a woman who sends someone to another professional knowing that she’s giving up a potential client. For example, you may need branding photos done for your company. Your preferred photographer is booked for months. She gives you a list of likeminded photographers that she admires. How beautiful is that? You not only have incredible images for your business, but also a new friend. Networking and personal connections come naturally when women work together. With a little kindness, hard work, and authentic connection, your club will grow. So, ask yourself, “Who are my go-to ladies? If I need advice, an introduction, or have a business emergency, who would I call?” The women within the pages of this magazine may be a great place to start!
