In addition to a little side trip to France, I’m planning to take a week in August for a personal celebration of the anniversary designation. From Norfolk, I’m gonna head westward through Danville and meander all the way out to the tip — Bristol. That’s a good 8-9 hours minimum drive — a distance of some 500 miles via Route 58; roughly the same distance as motoring from my hometown to Hartford, Connecticut. Sometimes, we forget just how wide Virginia is when taking the scenic Nonetheless,route. it is a must.

A few pints of the old (Legend) and new (Benchtop) in Richmond will cap things off before headin’ back to my Southeastern city by the sea. And, there’s some improving news — gas prices are coming down. I hope to see some of you along the way. Let’s share a pint, though with your own glass!

August is Craft Beer Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The General Assembly passed HJR 522 ten years ago (March 12, 2012) with the official designation, and commended the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild for its pioneering work. I echo that sentiment today: Hats off to those founding brewers of the modern craft beer Aroundera.the time of the signing, the Travel Channel stated, “The entire state of Virginia is so obsessed with its beer culture it is officially naming the month of August ‘Virginia Craft Beer Month.’”

From the Birthplace of Country Music, I’ll probably make way for the Roanoke region and take the semi-annual pilgrimage to Route 151, Virginia’s first beer trail. Do the essential zig-zag between Charlottesville, Staunton, Harrisonburg and Waynesboro without getting dizzy. From there, I’m thinking Winchester and Leesburg with a few veering off points for beer stops. Then, it’ll be Loudoun County and popping in to see friends in Fairfax County with an overnight in Alexandria.

Fredericksburg will be calling the next day and I’m sure I’ll reminisce about the old Blue & Gray Brewing Company that we featured in an early issue of this magazine.

New Digital Virginia Cider Trail

Strangeways Brewing is expanding, opening its fourth location in The Shops at High Street on the outskirts of Colonial Williamsburg.The4,000-plus square foot space has extensive outdoor spaces, and some 300 seats for customers to spread out and relax surrounded by Strangeways signature decor, while enjoying offerings from Strangeways’ staggering 48 draft lines, which will pour a diverse line-up of beer, cider, flavored spiked sparkling seltzer, wine, and non-alcoholic offerings.

In an exhibition titled “Cheers Virginia,” the Virginia Museum of History & Culture will feature the work of brewers in the Commonwealth with a series of artifacts that include everything from a liquor chest given by the Marquis de Lafayette to William Cabell, Jr. as a token of his service during the Revolutionary War; fluted drinking glasses belonging to George Washington; and a curving wooden walking stick tap handle for Parkway Brewing Company’s Get Bent IPA. In all, 50 artifacts will be on display August 6 through January 29.

Did the Beer Jesus From America Sell His Soul?

That remains to be seen thus far, however.

The news came as a shock to many as Stone Brewing co-founder and executive chairman Greg Koch spent his career crusading for independent craft brewers and preaching against the evils of Big Beer.“That was their entire schtick,” said one Virginia brewer who wished to remain anonymous. “Their marketing slogan was ‘yellow fizzy beer is for wussies,’ and Stone positioned themselves as the protector of small craft brewers taking on the corporate beer establishment that treats beer as a commodity. I think this has to destroy their credibility with their loyal craft fans.”

The acquisition is scheduled to close by late August in a deal valued at $165 million and involves Stone’s operations in both California and its east coast production facility in Richmond.

While Molson Coors is considering this as possible grounds for an appeal, a somewhat auxiliary question arises: How did Stone Brewing get $464 million in the hole to investment group VMG/ Hillhouse and was this the deciding factor in co-founders Koch and Steve Wagner selling to Sapporo?

2022, Reuters news service reported a Federal jury awarded Stone Brewing $56 million in its trademark infringement case against Molson Coors. In its reporting, Reuters journalist Blake Brittain quoted Molson Coors spokesman Marty Maloney saying, “What we learned through this trial is that Stone Brewing’s lawsuit was not driven by consumer confusion and that Stone Brewing has a $464 million debt to pay to their private equity investors in 2023.”

Unlike the immediate and harsh response Virginia-born Devils Backbone Brewing Company received by craft beer enthusiasts and fellow brewers from across the Commonwealth after its announced sale to beer giant Anheuser-Busch-Inbev in 2016, the chatter on social media has been ho-hum for the most part regarding Stone.

In early summer, Escondido, California-based Stone Brewing announced it was being purchased by Sapporo USA, part of the Japanese Sapporo Holdings Ltd. international conglomerate.

In the end, whether you think the Beer Jesus From America sold out or if the founders just got tired of it all with the pandemic years weighing heavily on the bottom line, I suspect beer consumers will still reach for a Stone DIPA, even if the mystique of the winged demon seems less intense.

“Sapporo is acquiring Stone for many reasons unrelated to VMG’s investment in Stone,” Monahan said. “This is the right decision for the long term of both Stone and Sapporo. “As Greg Koch mentioned in his blog post, had we not found the right partner, we wouldn’t have sold,” Monahan continued. “We feel really fortunate to have a partner that respects Stone – our beers, our people and our fans. We’re not changing.

It appears Stone may lose its coveted independent label.

The year 2016 is interesting. In his farewell or explanatory post on the company website titled “It’s Time,” Greg Koch referenced that year.“…But I wanted to stand up for craft beer, which was the perennial underdog of the beer industry. Until it wasn’t.

2016 was the year Stone Brewing opened its Richmond facility to better serve the craft market east of the Mississippi with a fresher, highly sought after portfolio of beers like Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard.Thecity of Richmond used $25 million in grants and bonds to fund Stone RVA, according to Richmondbizsense. Stone Brewing was founded in 1996 and grew to be the 9th largest independent craft brewery in America. Sapporo has been seeking greater marketshare in the United States and Canada. In 2017, it acquired San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Company for $85 million.

“Sapporo shares our values and appreciates our unique, timehonored approach to brewing,” wrote Keith Greggor, Anchor Brewing co-owner, in a 2017 letter to supporters. “With both a long-term vision and the resources to realize it, Sapporo will keep brewing Anchor’s beers in San Francisco while expanding to new markets worldwide.”

“When was that moment? That’s a harder call than [pick your metaphor], but it seems to be sometime around 2016.”

“The Brewers Association defines breweries as craft if they produce 6 million barrels of beer or less,” Monahan shared. “Sapporo, with Stone, Anchor Brewing, and Sleeman Breweries (Canada) production combined just exceed that mark.”

And now, this includes Richmond. Stone’s Sean Monahan remains optimistic about the commitment Sapporo brings to the table and insists the brewery’s financial challenges had nothing to do with the sale.

“And for the VA audience, a nice complement to this story of growth is the news that we’re in the process of installing our pilot brewing system. This 10-bbl system creates a whole new channel for our local brewers to express their creativity and offer one-off beer styles right there out of our Richmond facility. So, not only are we investing capital into our RVA brewery, expanding and hiring more people, we’re also going to be offering some really exclusive, small-batch Stone offerings with more regularity right there in our TapStone’sRoom.”Richmond brewery will be producing Sapporo’s lineup of beers by the end of next year. Visitors to the Stone tasting room are likely to also find beers from across the Sapporo family (i.e., Sapporo, Anchor, Unibroue) in the “Friends of Stone” offerings.

“For those of us who started pre-SB604, zoning codes required manufacturers without a restaurant to be in an industrial area,” said Bill Spence, founder of St. George Brewing Company in Hampton. “Off-premise sales were limited to kegs and package beer. Facilities were designed for manufacturing and little for public use.”

The summary of the bill as passed stated this: Alcoholic beverage control; privileges of brewery licensees. Allows a brewery licensee to sell at retail the brands of beer that the brewery owns at premises described in the brewery license for on-premises consumption and in closed containers for off-premises consumption. The bill also allows these licensees to offer samples of the brewery’s products to individuals visiting the licensed premises, provided that such samples shall be provided only to individuals for consumption on the licensed premises and only to individuals to whom such products may be lawfully sold.

The United States was in an economic crisis in 2008-09. The housing bubble burst and financial institutions were severely impacted.Climbing slowly out of what was described at the time as the “most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression,” Virginia politicians along with Brett Vassey, CEO of the Virginia Manufactures Association, and members of the newly formed Virginia Craft Brewers Guild put together a convincing plan to allow breweries to operate with similar privileges the Commonwealth’s wine industry enjoyed. The projected economic benefits were convincing, stating the bill would keep Virginia on pace with neighboring states; an acknowledgement that breweries were an emerging manufacturing base and would create jobs; the generation of excise taxes for the Commonwealth; expansion of tourism and the economic impact

“SB604 was a game changer,” said Maureen Kelley, Nelson County’s Director of Economic Development and Tourism. Not so long ago, breweries located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, by law, had to operate as either exclusively as a manufacturing facility or as a brewpub with a full-service kitchen. There were other restrictions as well.

On May 15, 2012, then-Governor Bob McDonnell changed that when he signed SB604 into law. The bill was sponsored by State Senator Jeffrey McWaters of Virginia Beach. Senator Bill Stanley, who still serves in the General Assembly representing Senate District 20, was the co-patron.

In 2004, just 25 craft breweries were in operation in Virginia. By 2010, that number had risen to 42. It should be noted the breweries who spent money and time helping to lobby the General Assembly for the passage of SB604 were, in effect, brining the potential for more competition. The viewpoint at the time was “a rising tide lifts all boats,” though they could not have foreseen the tidal wave of new brewery openings that followed.“AtStarr Hill, one of the most impactful results of SB604 on our business was the challenge of increased high-quality competition in the marketplace locally,” said Josh Cromwell, Vice President, Starr Hill Brewery. “As a legacy brewer and champion of the bill in 2012, we also created an environment that required innovation and attention quality within our own walls. We’re proud of the quality evolution of our brewery over the last 10 years. It was a necessity to survive in our industry with so many new and first-class brewers that entered the Virginia beer scene.”

Hunter Smith, owner of Champion Brewing Company, had a similar experience.“Weactually opened in December 2012, so Champion was able to build its business model around the ability to sell pints, which was a significant improvement over the tastings and growler fills in the original business plan,” said Smith.

SB604 was paired with House Bill 359, sponsored by McClellan, that allowed manufactures to lease space in their brewhouses to smallerscale“Thisbrewers.legislation positions Virginia’s craft brewers to grow and create more jobs in the Commonwealth,” said McDonnell during the signing ceremony. “From Arlington to Abingdon, entrepreneurial Virginians are innovating and brewing critically acclaimed beers. The legislation signed today will make it easier for our breweries to serve as destinations for potential customers and allow some of our talented small-scale brewers to lease space from established brewers and overcome some of the significant start-up costs.”

The passing of SB604 had an impact on Smartmouth Brewing Company’s plans. We were in the unique position of having written our business plan based just on sales through distribution and then having SB604 pass while we were under construction,” said Porter Hardy, Smartmouth’s president. Hardy is also the current Co-Chair of the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild. “So, we had to totally revise our plan prior to opening. It was great, though. We were able to reach so many more people and reach them in a more direct way by serving people directly. Also, being able to sell pints directly to customers helped our bottom line as we were trying to get off the ground and allowed us to invest in more people/jobs.”

St. George’s Bill Spence: “With all the post-SB604 producers, the landscape has become pretty crowded and forcing everyone to make better beer to stay competitive. Also, the concept of ‘Buy local’ and drink local becomes important to the consumer. Many of us seem to be chasing the latest fad beverage or just want to be the local Cheers establishment. “Our location in Virginia Beach definitely is impacted by tourist traffic in the summers,” shared Hardy. “We also get people yearround who are coming to the Virginia Beach Convention Center or Our Norfolk location does get a fair number of people on brewery tours to our area, but they are more spread out With all the innovations and evolutions resulting from SB604’s passage 10 years ago, the craft beer industry continues to sail through uncharted territory.

And, a final word from Porter Hardy of Smartmouth: “SB604 was a monumental event for breweries in Virginia and really for the entire economy of Virginia. Owning a brewery is much more viable because of SB604 and we have seen the creation of hundreds of local jobs related to that and, I hope, we’ve made our communities a better and more fun place to live.”

“The concept came together over evening beer-storming, I mean brainstorming, sessions,” explained Beale. “In late 2012/early 2013, craft beer was just starting to be a thing in Hampton Roads, and we saw how people were accepting of the movement early on. There were not very many festivals out there that brought all the local craft producers at that time, and we decided the timing was right to showcase local beer and raise some money for charity at the same time. The first event was held in early August 2013 at Tapped Gastropub in Hilltop area of Virginia Beach and Alewerks, Back Bay, O’Connor, Beach Brewing (now Reaver Beach), Smartmouth, St. George and Young Veteran’s were the first participants.” In its first nine years, this event alone has raised just over $210,000.

The 757 Battle concept was developed by two Virginia Beach businessmen — Shawn Fischer and Andy Beale — who formed the Beach Ambassadors as a non-profit organization whose mission is solely to raise money for local charities.

“By our count, 22 unique charities have benefitted financially from this event,” shared Fischer. “Our charities St. Mary’s Home and Hope House Foundation, plus another 20 chosen by the brewers. This year, we will add charity donations for 2nd and 3rd place category winners so the number of charities who benefit will certainly increase moving forward.” The way charities benefit from 757 Battle of the Beers is multi-fold. The primary charities championed by Beach Ambassadors receive funds resulting from ticket sales and sponsorships. From smoky beers to clean lagers

one of the first breweries to switch to the smokeless English kiln, bringing clean, bright lagers to the market. But, centuries-old Schlenkerla never switched. It’s still known for Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier – i.e., the Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer.

Centuries back, beers inevitably had a touch of smokiness, since grains used for brewing were dried using wood fires. In 1635 England, however, a new type of kiln was patented: for the dryinge of mault and hops with seacole, turffe, or any other fewell, without touching of smoake. The smoke-free malting invention gradually made its way to the European mainland, explains Schlenkerla brewery of Bamberg, Germany. Around 1800, Spaten brewery in Munich, Germany, was

“I think smoke can work well in any beer style that has a strong malt backbone and [it] generally goes better in amber to dark beers,” says Tony Ammendolia, owner of Original Gravity brewing supply store and Final Gravity Brewing (Richmond).

Brewery styles continue to change. New styles appear, and old styles reappear and gain a following, like lagers and goses. Some historic styles experience less of a “re-peak,” reappearing here and there but never gaining widespread popularity. Smoked beers have been wafting their way onto Virginia brewery lineups more often as of late – time and consumer reaction will determine their“Smokedfuture. beers are a love-them/hate-them type of beer style for the general public,” says Brian Nelson of Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (Richmond and Goochland). “If I had to put them in a class, they are definitely a ‘brewers’ beer’ … brewers love them because of the ingredient complexity, complexity in brewing, and historical value associated with that style of beer.”

Hardywood recently released a small batch of Lil Smoky Boi, a Grodziskie style. “We have created some other smoked beer on a larger scale, but they tend to be around on our taps for quite some time,” he adds. He’s also used smoked malts in Märzens, Maibocks, and a Lichtenhainer. Eric Tennant of Benchtop Brewing (Norfolk and Richmond) points to the “small percentage of the craft beer market that really enjoy smoked beers. [The beers] move slower than some of our other lager offerings, but it is pretty steady and there are some consumers that come out specifically looking for them.”

Benchtop recently released Town Hall Vienna Style Rauchbier on draft and in cans. Next up is Wishing Tree Helles, made with smoked maple barley malt to enhance the malty flavors of the style. The making of a smoked beer

Making a comeback

Many seasoned craft beer fans recognize Alaskan Brewing Smoked Porter. Introduced in 1988, it’s made using malts smoked in a commercial food smoker using local alder wood. In dark beers such as porters and stouts, says Tennant, “The smoke notes go nicely with the chocolate flavors from the roasted malts.”

According to BJCP guidelines, German brewers traditionally used smoked malts in bock, doppelbock, weissbier, Munich dunkel, schwarzbier, Munich helles, Pils, and other specialty styles.Butsmoked malts can be used in other beers as well.

“We prefer American craft smoked malt generally speaking, versus the traditional German beech-smoked barley,” says Tennant. “We feel the more subtle smoked flavors can really just kind of accentuate the bready malt flavors rather than overpower the beer.” To balance the beer, he says, “The very first step for us is to do a small benchtop test mash in the lab. With strong flavors like smoke, we like to start out with a conservative approach. Our first smoked lager was about 15% and we have since gone up to 30% in our Town Hall lager.”

In brewing, “Beechwood- and cherrywood-smoked malts provide very different smoke characteristics, from subtle to intense, depending on the maltster,” says Nelson. “In developing a recipe, you must take those intensity factors into account to determine how much smoke expression you are looking for. The usage will provide umami, meaty, and savory notes coupled with other ingredient and yeast expressions.”

While Murphy & Rude doesn’t produce peat-smoked malts, Bloem says, “Skagit Valley Malting … does, and it very much works in “Peatedbeer.”malt … has an acrid and very intense flavor and aroma,” says Ammendolia. “If someone is set on using peated malt in a beer, I usually recommend they use considerably less than they would of any other smoked malt.”

While beechwood provides the traditional smoke for the original Rauchbiers from Bamberg, other wood fuels can add smoky notes, including cherry, oak, maple, mesquite, alder, apple, and pecan.

Recent smoky beers from Virginia breweries demonstrate the range and creativity that craft brewers can bring to historic styles.

• Väsen Brewing (Richmond) had a classic Rauchbier on tap, using beechwood-smoked barley, Bavarian lager yeast and Czech Saaz hops; as well as Smoked Blood Peach Sour.

• At Hopkins Ordinary Ale Works (Sperryville), co-owner Kevin Kraditor says, “We try to always have at least one smoked beer on tap,” using smoked malt from Copper Fox Distillery. Mary’s Rauch, made with local honey, is nearly always on tap, with others rotating in and out – including a peach wood-smoked beer and, “When Copper Fox makes their sassafras-smoked rye whiskey, we make a sassafras-smoked rye beer.”

Murphy & Rude Malting (Charlottesville) produces custom smoked malts and has smoked the grains for many Virginia smoked beers. Recently, these include Reason Beer Smoked Märzen (beechwood-smoked barley malt), We Are Pivo Smoked Wheat from Wild Man Dan (oak-smoked wheat), and others, including Väsen, Strangeways, Hardywood, and Decipher. “Heliotrope will be doing a Rauchbier with some beechwood-smoked wheat from us for this coming Oktoberfest,” says Jeff Bloem of Murphy & Rude. For home brewers, Original Gravity stocks beechwood smoked, cherrywood smoked, oak-smoked wheat, and peated“Whenmalt.selecting a smoked malt for your beer, I usually recommend smelling the smoked malts and going with the one that appeals to you the most,” advises Ammendolia. “The one exception is peated malt, which I generally steer people away from unless they are making a beer style that specifically calls for Perhapsit.as with whisky, many aficionados who appreciate smoky, charred notes may not enjoy the in-your-face, oftenmedicinal aromas and flavors that come from using peat moss in the malting process, as in Islay Scotch whiskies.

• Elkton Brewing (Elkton) brewed a cherrywood-smoked Rauchbier.

When it comes to home brewing using smoked malts, “Usage levels range considerably from about a half pound per fivegallon batch all the way up to using it as half or more of your base grains,” says Ammendolia. “I tend to like smoked malts in the lower range of a half pound to a pound for five gallons.”

• Decipher Brewing (Charlottesville) created Burn Notice smoked porter, using fresh roasted New Mexico hatch green chiles and custom smoked specialty malts from Murphy & Rude Malting.

A recent trip to Bamberg, Germany, further ignited Nelson’s interest in the style. He had smoked beers straight from wood casks. “Accompanied by some rich cheeses, the experience with the authentic smoked beer was fantastic, and the visit certainly got my gears turning again about the style.”

• Ornery Beer (Fairfax and Manassas) offered Smokey Beech smoked porter, with subtle beechwood-smoked flavor and aroma.

So, look for more smoked beers to come, not just from Hardywood but from breweries throughout Virginia. If you haven’t acquired the taste yet, one just might light your fire.

Smoke Signals wildfire smoked IPA at Final Gravity became an “accidental” smoked beer. Ammendolia used Pacific Northwest mosaic hops for his Doppler Effect IPA. “When we tried the beer, we noticed a subtle, but distinct smoky flavor. The hops must have been tainted by smoke from the wildfire out west. … Usually when we have a beer that doesn’t quite hit the mark, we dump it, but this one still tasted great, just a little smoky. It was not our usual Doppler Effect, so we rebranded it as Smoke Signals wildfire smoked IPA, and it was very well received.”

• Commonwealth Brewing Company (Virginia Beach) unveiled Purppsmoke Gose, a unique blend of flavors featuring blackberries, plums, and vanilla beans for a soft, fruity sour, and then given a dose of smoked malt and aged in oak barrels.

• Capstan Bar Brewing (Hampton) brewed Smoked Porter, using beechwood-smoked malts.

• Oozlefinch Beers & Blending (Fort Monroe) has a line of traditional beers (dubbed “Nost” for “nostalgic”). One of the beers is Reawakened, a 2.9% Grodziskie-style beer.

Asked whether this could have been a happy accident, he replied, “While I wouldn’t go looking to make a beer like this on purpose, I wouldn’t have been OK serving it if it weren’t really good. Who knows, smoked hops could become a thing, but we will continue to focus on making our IPAs with non-smoked hops forButnow.”who knows what creative sources of smoky flavors could provide kindling for future beers?

Their website indicates that Thin Brew Line is a “taproom that salutes our first responders and frontline workers.” It’s a small brewery with a big heart, making delicious beers for us, while simultaneously sending portions of their profits to all sorts of local charitable causes. When you’re drinking a glass of “An Garda Siochana,” a dry Irish stout, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Virginia Beach Police Foundation. When you hoist a “White Line Hefeweizen,” you’re helping the Princess Anne Courthouse Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department. And while you’re enjoying a Kolsch-9, aka., K-9, you are helping pay the medical bills of retired K-9 working dogs.

When we visited the brewery in late May, the beer lineup had eight beers and one hard cider on tap.

“Greyfriars Bobby” (5.5% ABV) is an English Brown Ale, while “Station 12 Fire Engine Red” (5% ABV) is a Scottish Red Ale. Continuing with the beers-by-color review, “Badge Hunny” (6% ABV) is a delicious Honey Blonde Ale that gets its sweetness from honey malt, not honey. They produce a light-bodied, clean “Kolsch 9” (5% ABV) and a “White Line Hefeweizen.” Speaking of light, their “Mick” (6.5% ABV) is a wonderful Coffee Blonde Ale; they use whole bean coffee from Virginia Beach’s “Three Ships Coffee,” and cold brew it so you can taste that coffee flavor but not darken the beer’s color. Crave hops? They were serving “disPAtch American IPA” (6.3% ABV), loaded with Amarillo, Columbus and Simcoe hops, and “Stache Strong IPA,” a Mosaic hopsperfused pop to your palate. Finally, if you need a palatecleaner, “Hard Time” (3.9% ABV, available in a whole mess of flavors) is up to the task. Mr. Wynn recently decided to return to retirement, so the Thin Brew Line began to look for a new brewer. They found one in Rafael “Raf” Corredor, owner and operator of American Homebrew Supply, located in the JANAF Shopping Center in Norfolk. Raf, no stranger to the Zymurgical arts and an experienced all-grain brewer, produced a couple of batches of beer with Mr. Wynn, who afterwards apparently felt he was leaving the brewery in capable hands. Raf’s debut beer is “Tee Off,” (5.8% ABV), a Saison, and it should be available the first week in June. Chris got a sample, direct from the fermenter, and it’s great; it had rich flavors of tangerines, but surprise, all that citrus fruit flavor comes from the yeast.

Different, that’s for sure.

One has a “lineup” wall in it, so you and multiple friends can stand shoulder to shoulder, looking like a suspect, waiting for someone to snap your picture. intense and there was good camaraderie among the employees which led to two developments that would change the course of Jinson’s life. One was a manager, now one of Jinson’s closest friends, giving him a Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, and like that, he expanded beyond primarily being a whiskey drinker. Beer was good and before you knew it, he was starting a Friday after work beer club. Just five people to start, the club grew to around 25 and outside of work he was soon visiting breweries and having beer shares with friends once or twice a month. But, his beer dreams were bigger than all that. Jinson wanted to open his own beercentricInterestingly,business.while visiting breweries and beer bars and beer friendly restaurants to talk to folks in the business and see the business from a variety of perspectives, a definite early inspiration was Falls Church, Va’s Spacebar — a cool, comfortable neighborhood bar with a simple food approach, i.e., grilled cheese and tater tots combined with a high quality beer tap list. Jinson thought he had a great, similar idea, but serving an Asian dish dear to his heart — ramen. W rite about beer long enough and you will hear about some very interesting paths followed along the way to a person owning a beer focused business, but Jinson Chan’s stands out and this is the story of a young man, born and raised in Malaysia, who hated beer and yet somehow went on to open High Side, a very cozy, very popular restaurant and bar in Fairfax City. Chan further went on to collaborate on beers with 20+ different breweries over the last four years, including names like Crooked Run, Back Bay, Mustang Sally, Vasen, Oozlefinch, and Sinistral (all in Virginia) and Bluejacket in Washington, DC. Now, Jinson stands on the cusp of opening a production brewery in VA, but we’ll get to that.At the age of 24, with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Jinson moved to Ames, Iowa for post graduate studies at Iowa State University and after completing his studies, ended up at a small engineering firm in Arlington, VA (he was employee #16) working largely on Defense Department contracts, including interesting projects like one in 2004/2005 during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which was intended to provide a system to detect suicide bombers at greater distances. Jinson and some other traditionalist ramen eaters don’t drink all the broth. The broth is meant to be a flavoring agent for the noodles with plenty left behind when done. However, Jinson’s friends pointed out that Americans often drink all the broth and after filling up on a whole bunch of instant ramen broth, how much beer are they going to want to drink? Grudgingly, he realized a plan B was needed. Enter “Chef Liu.”

Crooked Run was an early collaboration with a sour beer named “5 Jinsons,” a play on the fact that his beer friends started using “Jinsons” to represent rating stars, as in “how much, do you like this beer? I love it, 5 Jinsons.” What has proven to be a truly fruitful collaboration was one for High Side’s 2nd anniversary in 2020 with Back Bay Farmhouse Brewing of Virginia Beach. In his youth, Jinson loved a coconut jam made with pandan — a Southeast Asia plant in which the leaves are turned into paste, extract, or powder and is used similar to how we use vanilla in the West. Working with brewer Mike Pawley (formally of Cigar City Brewing and Commonwealth Brewing), the two came up with an Imperial Stout featuring pandan that was aged in Tarnished Truth bourbon barrels. The name Panda Named Dan is a play on the use of pandan. The exciting follow up to that collaboration is that Mike Pawley and Jinson are close to signing a lease for a space in Suffolk, VA that will become the Sojourn Fermentory, including a full journey to be sure. And the name High Side? Jinson tells me “As a DoD contractor, I used to joke about having “The SCIF Bar” inside the SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) but it was deemed to sensitive so I decided to use High Side instead. High Side is a classified network inside the SCIF. Another food passion of Jinson’s is Taiwanese food, in no small part due to being married to a Taiwanese native. As serendipity would have it, a member of his wife’s family was ending a successful run as a restaurant owner in Boston and upon hearing about Jinson’s interest in opening a restaurant offered not only to help with advice but also to fly down, help with developing recipes, buying equipment, designing the space, training staff, the whole nine yards. And Chef Liu, as this clearly amazing man is known affectionately by those around him, would only accept minimal compensation for his efforts. We should all be so lucky to have such a person step up in our lives at an important moment, but one gets a sense, rather quickly, that Jinson is a clear example that good or “lucky” things seem to happen at times to the best people. Spend a little while in his presence in or out front of High Side and you will be struck by how many people greet him warmly by name and how he greets them back by name. This warmth and positive nature no doubt have led to Jinson establishing such a collaborative relationship with others in the NoVa beer community.

So, with great confidence, he took his business idea to his beer share group. What did they think? Nope.
